Your Recruitment Counselors

Panhellenic Creed We, as Undergraduate members of women’s fraternities, stand for good scholarship, for guarding of good health, for maintenance of fine standards, and for serving, to the best of our ability, our college community. Cooperation for furthering fraternity life, in harmony with its best possibilities, is the ideal that shall guide our fraternity activities. We, as Fraternity Women, stand for service through the development of character, inspired by the close contact and deep friendship of individual fraternity and Panhellenic life. The opportunity for wide and wise human service, through mutual respect and helpfulness, is the tenet by which we strive to live.

Recruitment Counselors, or Gamma Chi’s, are responsible for helping women through the recruitment process. A Gamma Chi is a sorority woman representing the Greek community who is disaffiliated from her particular chapter to concentrate her time and attention to you. These sorority women are there to walk you through the week of recruitment and will remain objective in order to focus on her group of PNM’s. Every woman going through recruitment will be placed in a small group that will have a Gamma Chi to help guide them through the week. You will meet with your group before and after each day to discuss your experience with your Gamma Chi. At the end of each round, women going through recruitment will select which chapters they hope to visit the next day. Gamma Chis are required to always keep these conversations absolutely confidential. Whether you have an emergency during the week of recruitment, just need to talk to someone at 4 a.m., your Gamma Chi will be your mom and best friend.

Recruitment Orientation

What to Wear?

The morning of August 12th your recruitment journey will begin bright and early with Recruitment Orientation. Busses and Gamma Chis will pick you up close to your residence hall and take you to orientation. At Orientation you will receive your Official Recruitment Name Tag and PNM Manual. You will also meet your Gamma Chi and the other members of your small group. Recruitment is a casual event, so be yourself and come prepared to meet new friends and learn everything you need to know about the week ahead.

During Open House, Philanthropy, and House Tour Rounds, your Gamma Chi will give you a designated t-shirt to wear. These shirts may be worn with shorts, jeans, slacks, or casual skirts. We recommend wearing whatever makes you most comfortable. Fayetteville is very hot in August and you will be outside most of the day so we want you to be as comfortable as possible. Remember to wear comfortable shoes: you will be doing a lot of The women going through Recruitment will be split into two large walking during groups. The first group will participate in Open House parties on Day 1, recruitment! Please feel free to make your outfit and the second group will participate in Open House parties on Day your own with necklaces, 2. Philanthropy Day Philanthropy Day is the second round of recruitment. On Tuesday and Wednesday you will have the opportunity to visit up to 6 chapters to learn about their national and local philanthropy. You'll learn about the various events the chapters support, as well as philanthropies and how this relates back to their values. Last year our sorority chapters raised a combined total of over $155,000 for their philanthropies!

Accessories… Less is More 

 

 

Accessories are great for your outfit, but keep in mind that you will be wearing a T-Shirt. Headbands or other hair accessories are great as well. They will keep your hair out of our face and keep you cool. PNMs are not allowed to wear watches during Recruitment. PNMs should wear comfortable shoes! You will be doing a lot of walking during recruitment. So flats, tennis shoes, or flat sandals are best. Purses nor cell phones are permitted during recruitment. PNMs will carry a Ziplock bag with them during recruitment for essential items. However bags are not allowed into the recruitment parties.

House Tour Round During House Tour Day, you will get to tour up to 4 sorority houses! You will once again be greeted with cheering and clapping at the front door. Since the parties are a little longer you will be offered a small drink such as lemonade or water. This day is a lot of fun, and you get to see where the members live and hang out. This is a great day to ask members questions such as “Who gets to live in house?” and “How many members sleep in each room?”

Preference Day On Preference Day, you will visit up to 2 sororities. The parties are more formal & you get to talk with members for a longer period of time. On this day you will decide which sorority you want to join. So the conversation may be more serious and in-depth. After these parties, you will walk silently to fill out your preference card in the Arkansas Union. It is important to remember that this is your decision and what is right for others may not be right for you.

Preference Day Attire

Bid Day Today is the day you will find out who your new sisters are going to be! Bid Day begins in the Greek Theater where you will find out which organization your Gamma Chi is a member of and you will be given your bid. After you open your bid, you will join your new sisters for pictures and celebration. Once again, keep it casual and comfortable. Your new chapter will give you a t-shirt to wear so you might want to wear a tank top or a shirt you can easily tuck away. Enjoy your Day! Remember this is just the beginning of a lifetime of friendship!

Preference Day is the dressiest round of recruitment and actually lasts all day and into the evening. PNMs should wear a cocktail dress. These dresses should be tasteful and comfortable. Full length formal dresses are unnecessary. It is a good idea to have a pair of flip flops or flats to wear as you walk from chapter to chapter, and then change into heels just before you go into your party. You will also want to bring a change of clothing to wear after your parties are over. Follow us on Twitter @ArkGreekLife @uarkpanhellenic

These groups do not participate in formal recruitment and typically require a minimum college GPA for membership. To learn more about these groups please visit uagreeks.uark.edu.

G r e e k L i f e FAQ s

How do I sign up for recruitment?

In order to sign up for recruitment you must register online through the University of Arkansas Office of Greek Life Website at uagreeks.uark.edu.

Do I need letters of recommendation to go through recruitment? Letters of Recommendation are not required to go through recruitment, but it is highly encouraged that each PNM have at least one letter of recommendation per chapter. Letters of Recommendation are simply letters of reference written by an alumna of a sorority at the University of Arkansas. It is appropriate and highly encouraged for you to obtain your own letters of recommendation. You can begin this process by informing friends, teachers, and relatives that you are participating in formal recruitment at the University of Arkansas. More information regarding how to obtain letters of recommendation can be found at http://uagreeks.uark.edu/ lettersofrecommendation.php.

What does it mean if I am a legacy? Being a legacy to a chapter does not in anyway guarantee you a bid or an invitation to any round of recruitment. However, chapters are aware if a PNM is a legacy and may consider this when choosing who to invite to parties.

How will the chapters know my GPA?

If there is an emergency how will someone get a hold of me? You will not be able to carry a cell phone during recruitment or on Preference Day. If your family were to experience an emergency they should contact the Office of Greek Life at (479) 575-5001 or via email at gogreek@uark.edu.

Do I need to provide my own meals during recruitment? You will use your on campus meal plan during recruitment. However you may want to have a little breakfast in your room because recruitment may begin before the dining halls open. We will also provide light snacks through out the day.

Can I still be involved in other things on campus if I am in a sorority? Absolutely!! Sorority women are some of the most involved on campus, and many chapters require members to be involved in at least one other Registered Student Organization. In the past five years, seven Panhellenic women have served as student government officers, and two women have served as student body president.

What does accepting a bid entail? Accepting a Bid means that you sign a Bid Card from a specific chapter saying that you intend to pursue membership in their organization and not with any other chapter. Once you sign a Bid Card you are ineligible to sign a Bid to any other organization for one academic year.

When you register online for Recruitment, you will enter your cumulative GPA. That GPA will be verified with the university’s records. Please What are my chances of getting a Bid? be sure to submit your final transcript to U of A Bids are not guaranteed at any point during Admissions no later than July 27th. 2012. recruitment. We strongly encourage all PNM’s to keep an open mind through the process. If Can I attend ROCK Camp? you are nervous about receiving a bid it is best to Yes! PNMs may attend R.O.C.K. Camp Service, talk with your Gamma Chi. She can help you to R.O.C.K. Adventure, or R.O.C.K. Camp better understand the process. Session 1.

F i n a n c i a l I n fo r m a t i o n

Shortly after receiving a bid, your new chapter will make you aware of the financial commitment for joining their organization. It is not uncommon for fees to include Membership Dues, Parlor Fees, a one time New Member Fee, and/or some sort of T-Shirt Fee. Chapters DO NOT expect New Members to pay all of their fees at one time, and all chapters offer payment plans. Chapters as well as the National Panhellenic Council give away thousands of dollars in scholarships each year. Some scholarships are specifically for New Members. If you are concerned about the financial obligation of membership, you should speak with your New Member Educator or Chapter President. An estimated cost for membership is available on each chapter’s individual page on the Greek Life Website at uagreeks.uark.edu.
