president’s MESSAGE There are more than 1,100 community colleges in the U.S., but unless you’ve worked at or attended one of them besides Tyler Junior College, you might never realize just how different TJC really is. I think part of what makes TJC unique lies in how it started - as offering the first two years of a four-year university degree as well as a complete university-style life experience. TJC evolved into a residential campus with a wide range of student activities during its rich and proud history. To this day, there are more activities at TJC than at many universities! The result has been a strong and loyal alumni base that continues to remain involved in the College and contribute to its greatness. So many of our local leaders started their college experience here. They made friends for life, met spouses and discovered who they could become. They never forgot TJC’s role in their success and as a result, we have the largest and most active alumni of any two-year college I’ve ever seen. The only down side I can think of is that after 88 years in Tyler, it’s hard now to have very many firsts of anything. Nevertheless, we still find ways to do just that! Three new buildings are underway as well as new programs and activities. During 2013, our Board of Trustees approved the establishment of a women’s softball team and we hired the team’s first coach, Nicole Dickson, who has already signed most of her first team. Our Board approved initial design concepts for the new nursing and health sciences building and the Rogers Foundation came forward with a lead gift to name the facility the Robert M. Rogers Nursing and Health Sciences Center. Our Board approved the establishment of new programs to occupy the Rogers Center and we formed advisory committees and hired department chairs. 3
As we move to accommodate growth in nursing and health sciences fields and respond to the abundance of residential life applications, our Board approved the establishment of a new 250-bed residence hall. Construction will begin soon. Our city, county and economic development corporation all approved participation in a tax-increment financing project to expand our Skills Training Center with a three-story energy center, where students of the future will study for high-demand, high-paying jobs in various energy fields. We formed a new honors program and reshaped existing scholarship funds to provide recruitment incentives for the region’s brightest students, including $1,000 toward housing costs if they choose to live on campus in the honors living and learning community. All of these decisions paved the way for a most exciting 2014. I truly believe that TJC’s glory years are happening now and that 2014 will be a high mark in our history. I’m proud of the great work we’ve all done together to build on our past and I’m convinced we are now in a golden decade that will be looked back upon as some of TJC’s best years. Thank you for the role you play in ensuring TJC’s strength and broad impact throughout East Texas. I encourage you to remain involved as we make history in 2014.

Since joining TJC as president in 2007, Dr. Mike Metke has forged partnerships for the establishment of satellite centers in Lindale, Jacksonville and Rusk, overseen a massive infrastructure upgrade at the main campus and led the College’s efforts to establish a new nursing and health sciences facility. During his tenure, TJC has seen its enrollment reach an all-time high and voters approve one of the largest publicly supported bond issues in its 88-year history. With Dr. Metke at the helm, TJC secured a $12 million federal grant for the establishment of a new retail management program, added women’s soccer, women’s softball and a new honors program. He also led an institution-wide movement to improve civility, safety and friendliness amongst employees, students and visitors.

accomplishments and awards During the 2012-13 academic year, Tyler Junior College received national acclaim and moved forward on major construction projects that will shape its future for generations. Listed below are some of the highlights of the year.
ACADEMICS • The College, in conjunction with Brookshire Grocery Co. and the Western Association of Food Chains, launched a new retail management certificate program. The 10 courses that are required for the certificate are designed to prepare students for career opportunities and upward mobility in the retail industry.
• The Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic program was granted initial accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). The accreditation is for a period of five (5) years and confirms that the program is in compliance with nationally established standards.
• The School of Liberal Arts and Sciences was reorganized and divided into two schools: the School of Humanities, Communication and Fine Arts and the School of Engineering, Mathematics and Sciences.
• Nine TJC art students spent one month in Florence, Italy in a study-abroad program. They attended the Santa Reparata International School of Art where they earned six hours of college credit.
• The Tyler Junior College Law Enforcement Academy graduated its most successful cadet class to date. The state average for the licensing exam test score is 78. TJC Cadet Class No. 19 had a class average of 91.
• The College’s online campus website went live. The online campus concept and its accompanying website provide students with the opportunity to attend TJC in an online fashion and complete a number of degrees, as well as the academic core, completely online.
• The College announced a new scholarship program to attract high-achieving high school seniors. The Presidential Honors Scholarship, a full tuition and fees scholarship, was offered to more than 400 East Texas seniors. Recipients participate in the College’s Honors Program and receive an additional housing stipend if they choose to live on campus in the Honors Living & Learning Community in the Ornelas Residential Complex.

• TJC received special recognition in Community College Week as a Top 100 associate degree producer in 2013 for African-American graduates.
• Tyler Junior College was recognized as a leader in the national student completion movement by Achieving the Dream, for showing evidence of measurable improvements in student achievements. TJC was one of eight institutions designated as a 2013 Leader College.
ATHLETICS
FINE ARTS
• The Apaches were awarded the East Texas Team Community Service Award presented by SPORTyler for outstanding community service. The athletic teams contributed more than 2,000 hours of community service.
• The Apache Pow Wow, the award-winning student newspaper of Tyler Junior College, garnered 16 awards during the 2012 Texas Community College Journalism Association conference.
• The Apaches won their third NJCAA Division I Soccer Championship. Steve Clements was voted Coach of the Tournament and Casey Osborne, a sophomore forward from Atlanta, Ga., was named Most Valuable Player of the Tournament.
• The speech and debate team was named state champion at the Texas Community College Forensic Championship Tournament. The team earned first place in Overall Sweepstakes, first in Individual Events Sweepstakes, and third place in Debate Sweepstakes.
• The Lady Apaches volleyball team reached a ranking of No. 1 in the country for the first time in school history. The ladies also made their second NJCAA national tournament appearance in the program’s history.
• The Bell Tower Arts Journal, a student-led literary publication, received six (6) awards in the Literary Magazine Division of the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association annual conference including First place, Literary Magazine Cover Design. The literary magazine contest is an open division, which means the College was judged not only against other two-year institutions, but also against top-notch universities.
• The National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics announced its Under Armour Athletic Director of the Year Award. Dr. Tim Drain, TJC director of intercollegiate athletics, received the JC/CC West Region honor. • Six individuals were inducted into the TJC Sports Circle of Honor. Inductees included: Ivory Lee Brown, football, 1988-89; Ike Forte, football, 1973-74; Mandy Nall, tennis, 1987-89; Scott Stewart, tennis, 1987-89; Terry Stillabower, basketball, 1964-66; Delton Wright, football coach, 1981-95. • The Apaches and Lady Apaches tennis teams both claimed NJCAA Division I national championships. It was the fourth straight title for the ladies and 17th overall and 7th overall for the men.
• Sydney Walter, sophomore theatre student, was selected for a two-month internship at the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center in New York City, one of the oldest playhouses on Broadway. • Theatre professor Dr. David W. Crawford, had his new play “Prodigal” featured in an off-Broadway reading held at Theatre East in New York City, with former “Sopranos” actor Dominic Chianese in the leading role.
• The College finished 4th in the nation in the NATYCAA Cup, which measures total strength of an athletic program. NATYCAA is the National Alliance of Two Year College Athletic Administrators. • The College announced the addition of women’s softball to its lineup of NJCAA Division I athletics, beginning in Fall 2014. Nicole Dickson was named as the first coach for the new sport. 7
AWARDS • The U.S. Department of Labor announced TJC – the only Texas institution - as the lead college in a $12 million labor grant as part of the Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training initiative to promote skills development and employment opportunities in retail management. Other colleges in the TJC consortium are: Cerritos (Calif.) College, Clackamas (Ore.) Community College, and the University of Alaska in Anchorage. • The College received a $20,000 grant from the AT&T Foundation to continue the AT&T Dual-Credit Scholars Program. The program encourages more economically disadvantaged students to complete college-level courses while they are still in high school. • Alpha Omicron, the College’s chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, received an overall ranking of 5th in the world during the honor society’s 95th International Convention in San Jose. A total of 1,904 chapter entries were received for the 2013 Phi Theta Kappa International Hallmark Awards. Alpha Omicron also received recognition as an International Distinguished Chapter, which is bestowed only to the top 10 percent of chapters worldwide. • One of the TJC West Campus Tyler Area Business Incubator’s graduate businesses (Fiber Network Solutions) won the “Outstanding Graduate Company” award in the manufacturing and service category in the National Business Incubation Association’s world-wide competition at the International Conference on Business Incubation. • Debbie A. Waldrop, a professor in the TJC Associate Degree Nursing program and part-time research consultant, received the Advancing Public Awareness in Clinical Research Award, from the Association of Clinical Research Professionals (ACRP) at the organization’s global conference in Orlando, Fla. This award recognizes an individual who has contributed to the public’s understanding of clinical research and participation in studies, and to the advancement of the profession. 8
• The Aspen Institute of Washington, D.C. announced that Luminant Power Track, a partnership between TJC and Luminant Academy, was selected as a Model for Success in the Skills for America’s Future program. The College graduated its first class of power plant technology students with associate’s degrees. Seventeen graduates were offered jobs with Luminant upon graduation. • The Council for the Advancement and Support of Education announced that TJC was one of four public, two-year institutions nationwide – and the only two-year institution in Texas – to receive two international awards: the Gold Circle of Excellence Award for Community College Public-Private Partnership for its collaboration with Luminant in TJC’s power plant technology program; and an exemplary recognition award for overall performance in educational fundraising. • The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board announced the award of a $263,200 grant for science, technology, engineering and mathematics scholarships for TJC students studying in STEM fields. The grant is a one-year award that will provide 100 TJC students with financial need a $2,500 scholarship. • The Retail Management Certificate Program was chosen for the National Council for Workforce Education (NCWE) Credit Exemplary Program Award. • TJC’s Family Learning Center of Tyler was awarded a $12,000 Retail Merchants Association of Tyler Charitable Fund grant from the East Texas Communities Foundation. Funds were used to add an activity sand box for toddlers and purchase family reading materials to encourage parents to read with their children in English or Spanish.
harry comes home The statue of long-time Tyler Junior College President Dr. Harry Jenkins – stolen in April 1995 – was recovered and returned to the College in July 2013. The lifesize statue, weighing approximately 300 pounds, was last seen on Easter Sunday, April 16, 1995. News coverage of a cold-case investigation launched in August 2011 eventually led to its recovery. The refurbished statue now has a permanent home inside Jenkins Hall. Jenkins statue in its original location outside Wise Auditorium.
A pioneer in public higher education. Jenkins was the first junior college leader to become president of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. He developed this College from a small embryonic school to the largest single-campus junior college in the state of Texas. His open-door policy with students popularized the slogan “we care.” Known affectionately by educators, statesmen, and friends nationwide as “Mr. Junior College.” Jenkins will long be remembered on this campus where he always counseled that complex problems will yield to reason. --Watson W. faculty and staff awards Tyler Junior College Endowed Chair for Teaching Excellence The Tyler Junior College Endowed Chair for Teaching Excellence is a recognition program to honor and reward professors who demonstrate excellence in teaching. The program enables professors to nominate and reward their peers who demonstrate excellence as educators. Since the program’s inception in 1990, there have been 64 professors designated as distinguished TJC endowed chairs. Each recipient receives $2,000 for each of two years ($4,000 total) which includes a $1,500 cash stipend and $500 for professional development. Adjunct Excellence in Teaching Award Established in 1999, the Adjunct Excellence in Teaching Award recognizes the contributions that our adjunct faculty provide to student learning in our community. robert m. rogers Nursing and Health Sciences Center To meet the ever-growing need for health care professionals, Tyler Junior College embarked on its most ambitious capital project to date – the Robert M. Rogers Nursing and Health Sciences Center. The facility establishes a new western border of the TJC main campus. Set to open in Spring 2015, the Robert M. Rogers Nursing and Health Sciences Center will more than triple the classroom and laboratory space of TJC’s current health care programs. The additional and expanded programs will produce a projected 50 percent more TJC graduates in health care fields – up from 600 in 2013 to 900 by the year 2017.

In an effort to meet the demand for more specialized training programs, Tyler Junior College, Smith County, the City of Tyler and the Tyler Economic Development Council joined forces in August 2013 to fund an expansion of the TJC West Campus Skills Training Center. The 51,024-square-foot expansion will provide training space for high tech jobs which is consistent with the Industry Growth Initiative adopted by the City of Tyler, TJC Board, and other local boards in 2010.

foundation report What an amazing year. The $4.4 million contributed to the Tyler Junior College Foundation by almost 1,000 donors in 2013 is a tribute to those with a sincere passion for the College, pride in the community, and a willingness to accomplish great things. A prime example of that passion, pride and diligence is the Robert M. Rogers Nursing and Health Sciences Center. Gifts to the Rogers Center are part of why Tyler is fast becoming a premier healthcare training destination. Private support is critical to ensuring an unparalleled level of excellence at Tyler Junior College; and our generous donors add substantial value to the programs across our locations in Tyler, Lindale, Jacksonville, and Rusk. TJC receives national award for educational fundraising Tyler Junior College was one of four public, two-year institutions nationwide – and the only two-year institution in Texas – to be recognized by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE), for overall performance in educational fundraising. CASE named 68 colleges and universities and 18 independent schools as recipients of its 2013 Educational Fundraising Awards, which recognized institutions for overall performance and improvement in educational fundraising programs. “We are honored that Tyler Junior College was selected for this award,” said Dr. Kim Russell, TJC vice president for advancement and external affairs. Russell also serves as executive director of the TJC Foundation. “Our success is due to the TJC Foundation board of directors and, specifically, our dedicated investment committee.” Selection was based on data submitted to the Council for Aid to Education’s annual Voluntary Support of Education survey. A CASE member institution is automatically eligible to receive an overall performance or overall improvement award, provided it has participated in the VSE survey for the past three years. Winning institutions were recognized in the awards gallery at the 2013 Summit for Leaders in Advancement conference held in July in San Francisco. 20

Billy Hibbs, Jr. is one of the longest continuously serving members of the investment committee. Billy is Chairman and CEO of Heartland Security Insurance Group, and he is also a TJC alumnus. Lee Gibson, Investment Committee Member Lee Gibson is a certified public accountant, Chief Financial Officer and Senior Executive Vice President for Southside Bank. He also served as Chairman of Federal Home Loan Bank of Dallas from January 1, 2007 to December 31, 2012. David McCullough Investment Committee Member David McCullough previously worked with Gilead Science, Inc., one of the world’s largest biopharmaceutical companies. As a private investor, he joined the Investment Committee and the TJC Foundation board during 2012. Jim Perkins Investment Committee Member Jim Perkins is the President of Citizens 1st Bank with locations in Tyler, Jacksonville, Rusk and Nacogdoches. Annual Scholarships TJC Accounting Department Annual Scholarship Established in January 2013 by two anonymous donors, this scholarship assists a deserving student pursing a major in accounting. Tab and Bonnie Beall Promises to Keep Annual Scholarship Established in January 2013 by Tab and Bonnie Beall. As part of the Promises to Keep annual scholarship program, this award helps bridge the funding gap for worthy students. Frankie S. Chaffin Widner Annual Scholarship for the Deaf Established in February 2013 by Darlene Winsett in honor of her mother, Frankie Chaffin Widner. The scholarship will benefit a deaf student who has demonstrated a commitment to community service. John and Jennifer Gaston Promises to Keep Annual Scholarship Established in March 2013 by Bob and Louise Dyer. This scholarship honors the lives of John and Jennifer Gaston and provides significant scholarship funding for a deserving student. Tyler Executive Women’s Network Annual Scholarship Established by the Tyler Executive Women’s Network in May 2013, this scholarship benefits a Smith County female pursuing a major in a businessrelated field. TJC-Rusk Nursing Program Incentive Award Established in July 2013 by the Rusk Economic Development Corporation in support of students pursuing a vocational nursing certificate at the TJC Rusk location. Jeryl Wayne Story Annual Scholarship Established by friends of Jeryl Wayne Story in August 2013 to honor his life achievements. Endowed Scholarships Coach John E. Peterson Endowed Scholarship Established in September 2012 by family and friends of John Peterson upon his retirement as long-time coach of TJC tennis. A surprise event was held at Hollytree County Club to announce this scholarship as well as the renaming of the TJC tennis courts in honor of Coach Peterson’s nationally acclaimed career at TJC. Knight Endowed Scholarship Established in September 2012 by an anonymous donor, this endowment benefits an individual who excelled in one of the Literacy Council of Tyler’s GED programs. Rick and Bonnie Rayford Endowed Scholarship Established in November 2012 by TJC alumni, Rick and Bonnie Rayford, this scholarship will assist high school graduates from Smith County who need financial assistance in order to attend college. Clorinda “Petey” Wisenbaker Professional Nursing Endowed Scholarship Established in December 2012 by Paula Wisenbaker Whisenant in memory of her mother, Clorinda “Petey” Wisenbaker. This scholarship also expresses gratitude to the TJC nursing program, whose graduates provided her parents with such excellent care. Patsy Clyde Endowed Scholarship Established in December of 2012 by Virginia Gatewood and the Gatewood-Hawkins Foundation to honor the life of Patsy Clyde. The scholarship will be awarded to a deserving student in fall 2014.
Sarah Lois Moseley Motes Nursing Endowed Scholarship Established in December 2012 by a charitable remainder trust funded by the Vaughn Foundation and a gift from David and Amy Motes McCullough. This endowment honors the life of Sarah Motes and her 70-year career in nursing. This scholarship will benefit a student in the associate degree in nursing (ADN) program. Betty Briggs Alumni Endowed Scholarship Established in March of 2013 by family and friends of Betty Briggs upon her retirement from TJC. Betty served as the director of Alumni Affairs for 15 years leading the association to national recognition for community college alumni programs. Betty was honored in May 2013 at the annual Tyler area chapter alumni gathering. Merritt Reed Steger Engineering Endowed Scholarship Established through a planned gift from Mrs. Ann H. Steger in memory of her son Merritt Reed Steger. This scholarship will benefit a high school graduate from the TJC designated service area who is pursuing a degree in engineering. Country for Our Country Endowed Scholarship Established in August 2013 through the Country for Our Country organization to honor the courageous men and women who have served in a branch of the United States Armed Forces. This scholarship will benefit a veteran or dependent of a veteran who demonstrates a financial need in order to attend college.

The Tyler Junior College Alumni Association presented 4 awards at the 2012 Homecoming Awards Ceremony in October.
The TJC Alumni Association honored five outstanding alumni during its annual Homecoming Awards Luncheon on Saturday, Oct. 13, 2012. TJC Alumni Awards honorees were: Chief Master Sgt. Pat Snow ’83, Distinguished Alumnus; Dr. Paul and Kay Latta ’86 and ’81, Apache Spirit; Adam Daley ’98, Valuable Young Alumnus; and Emma Lou Prater ’46, Special Recognition. Chief Master Sgt. Pat Snow ’83 Distinguished Alumnus A 29-year United States Air Force veteran, Chief Master Sergeant John “Pat” Snow is the senior enlisted advisor for Defense Media Activity. Snow serves as the advisor on matters of health, welfare and morale to enlisted personnel assigned to eight U.S. locations and 33 overseas sites. He was an Apache cheerleader at TJC and joined the U.S. Air Force after receiving his associate’s degree in 1983. His wife, Kay Logan Snow, also a 1983 TJC graduate, was an Apache Belle and a cheerleader. The Snows have two sons, Logan, a recent Baylor University graduate, and Christian, who currently attends Baylor. Dr. Paul and Kay Latta, ’86 and ’81 Apache Spirit Dr. Paul Latta and his wife, Kay, are active community volunteers and longtime supporters of TJC. He is a Tyler dentist, and she is a certified public accountant and partner with Henry & Peters. Mrs. Latta, a former Apache Belle, received her associate’s degree from TJC and her bachelor’s degree from The University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Latta also attended TJC and transferred to UT Austin, where he received a degree in engineering. Deciding on a career change, he returned to TJC and took classes to prepare him for a career in dentistry. After receiving his associate’s degree from TJC, he attended Baylor College of Dentistry. The Lattas have two sons: Andrew, a student at Baylor, and Matthew, a student at All Saints Episcopal School.
Adam Daley ’98 Valuable Young Alumnus Adam Daley is director of the southwest region of United States Investigative Services (USIS). During his days at TJC, Daley was a member of Phi Theta Kappa, Student Senate and Harmony & Understanding and was a resident hall specialist. After receiving his associate’s degree, he transferred to UT Arlington and graduated magna cum laude. He credits the 9/11 terrorist attacks for shaping his future and influencing his decision to pursue a career in national security. Daley and his wife, Jody, live in the Dallas area. They have two children: a daughter, Addyson, and a son, Jameson. Emma Lou Prater ’47 Special Recognition Emma Lou Prater began as a TJC student during the war years and enjoyed being involved in the various campus organizations. She graduated in 1946, then returned to TJC in 1964 when she began working in the business office. She and her late husband, Kenneth, have always been avid TJC athletic fans. Former TJC athletes and cheerleaders fondly remember the numerous Sunday dinners held in their home, since the campus cafeteria was closed on weekends. She later served as director of student activities which included sororities, fraternities and cheerleaders. The Praters have two daughters, Sherry and Sandy, and four grandchildren: Jennifer, Julie, Becky and Jason. They are all TJC alumni and TJC Alumni Association lifetime members.

Each year, alumni and friends give unrestricted donations to the Tyler Junior College Foundation and provide critical and immediate funding. Annual gifts provide financial resources when and where they are needed and guarantee a broad collegiate experience for TJC students.
Capital Projects
As Tyler Junior College continues to grow, it must expand and build facilities. The Robert M. Rogers Nursing and Health Sciences Center is the most ambitious capital project in the College’s more than 85-year history. At a total cost of $50 million, this state-of-the-art facility will serve Tyler’s $3 billion healthcare industry, which supports more than 25,000 local jobs. During May of 2012, the Tyler Junior College taxing district approved a $25 million bond package. The College and the TJC Foundation have committed to underwriting the remaining 50 percent of project cost through donor contributions and increased student user fees. Generous gifts to the new Robert M. Rogers Nursing and Health Sciences Center will ensure that TJC can provide this significant educational and medical resource to students and the community.
Scholarships
Scholarships continue to be a critical need for Tyler Junior College. As an open access institution of higher education, 60 percent of TJC students require financial assistance to pursue a higher education. Each year, the College and the TJC Foundation provide $2 million in scholarships. However, hundreds of deserving student applicants are turned away due to a lack of funding. A contributor can provide much-needed scholarship funds through ongoing annual gifts or a one-time donation to establish an endowment.
