ALIFORNIA UEEN TYLER HOOKS

e know her best from her family’s reality show “Keeping Up With the Kardashians,” and any given Sunday we see Kim Kardashian’s youngest sibling Kylie Jenner grace us with her swanky, soCal style with a Heroine Chic twist. Jenner describes her style as edgy and fun and dresses in a fashion similar to her older sister Kim, but adds her own embellishments that create an eclectic look. Jenner has already made style revelations with sister Kendall. The two revealed their new exclusive collection at Pacsun called Kendall & Kylie earlier this year, including a jewelry line exclusively at Nordstrom called Metal Haven. “We have this long sleeve skater dress [that I love] and it’s mesh in the middle.” Jenner said in an interview from Glamour magazine. “I [also] love leather pants--I’m obsessed with leather right now. Jenner also gets style tips from the fashion-forward Kanye West. When asked by Glamour Magazine if she had any favorite pieces from his latest collection she says she’s awed by all of it. “I love all his stuff,” Jenner said. “He’s been showing me a bunch of stuff but I haven’t really seen the final [product].But I might stop by the store and just get everything.” She uses Instagram to debut her style obsessions to followers interested in the same fashion. Through every filter Jenner rises as a style icon to the up and coming generation adding a 90s flare to a new wave of fashion.

LONDONOK TYLER HOOKS

Lucky London girl, how Ashley Madekwe summed herself up in three words to Glamour UK magazine, but we think she might have left out stylish. From her trendy style on ABC’s “Revenge,” Madekwe takes her street chic style intertwined with a playful palette to Instagram. “Creating a character is about what they look like,” she said to Cosmopolitan magazine. “The look speaks volume to the audience. Our costume designer is good at letting me be involved. She brings me a rack of clothes and we go through them together. The styling is ultimately up to me.” Madekwe also has a fashion blog called Ring My Bell

LO

where she debuts her day-today style to those who love her sense of fashion. “I started my blog as an online diary,” she said to Cosmopolitan magazine. “I moved to New York for a job and I kind of wanted to keep my pictures all in one place. Also, I just love style blogs and wanted to join in on the fun!” With Online fashion stardom, Madekwe took her blog to Instagram where the Catwalk caught a taste of her fabulous style. Madekwe has definitely made her own personal style revelations and we hope to continue seeing them whether in character or off set. Either way total instaglam seems to sum it all up.

Letter From the Editor

I

n this issue of the Catwalk we decided to do things a little differently with adding not only a menswear section, but a section for everything looks, the catwalk, and music. Including one for our very own style reflection which features junior Blakely Hill. We decided to put Blakely on the cover, she has the very sweet and simple style but through her own embellishments and creativity there’s a sense of fashion that’s she has mastered and created into an everyday look. This edition mainly focuses on style goals for the new year. With a resolution for almost every page. We wanted to share our style expectations for the new year with the ultimate resolution that this year we should all let out style out of the closet. It says so much about the person who wears it, and it’s time we all own up to wanting not only to be “in” but to be ourselves. What better start off the year than to make the promise that 2014 you will look like you. Another special thing we added to this issue was more social media, with spreads featuring some of the most popular fashion hashtags out there including Instaglam spreads featuring Kylie Jenner and Ashley Madekwe. I can already tell we’re ready for 2014 . New Year, new style with a new attitude. Stay true to you with your new year style!

COLOR CODE

The color of clothing matters, if it’s something that looks close to the shade that’s in keep it, and pair it with something from the current season.

CHECK OUT THE PATTERN

SOMETHING OLD + SOMETHING NEW

Some designers like to look back in order to come up with something new, and that applies to the patterns they’ve used in the past. If you see the same style on a current rack somewhere reuse that bag that’s a couple of seasons old.

Sometimes you may find yourself in dire need of that old pair of jeans, or that shirt. If it’s something that looks amazing with something that you’ve recently purchase why through it out? Save it for a rainy day.

BLURRED LINES

Hudson Jeans ‘Krista’ stripe super skinny jeans ($154); Theory ‘Sorcha’ silk top, $170 and Lauren Ralph Lauren silk infinity scarf, $45, all at Nordstrom and Nordstrom.com. (Nordstrom/MCT)

The Catwalk

MARA HOFFMAN

It’s only January and yet we’re already scoring Mara Hoffman’s 2014 ready-to-wear swimwear line off of Bloomingdale’s, Saks Fifth, and anywhere we can find such an eclectic print. Hoffman’s previous collections feature a very similar design, but this one shines brighter with greater hue. This collection also features tie die pieces, something that hasn’t been on our radar since early 2011. A relaxing bohemian look is something this collection offers with a playful tone that’s bound to make Spring Break through Memorial Day a time of whimsical leisure.

48.

The Catwalk

DIANE VON FURSTENBURG Diane Von Furstenberg debut her Spring/ Summer line with a radiant, gaudy color scheme, eclectic patterns and cuts that resemble a very simple yet refreshing style for the season to come. It all seemed so calm and put together, with easy pieces to develop a chic look for the next summer style. Pieces that could work for dressy and casual encounters were both displayed all with a hint of elegance we knew Ms. Furstenburg would of course add.

The Catwalk

REBBECA TAYLOR A perfect combination of floral chic prints and a diverse Spring flare defined Rebecca Taylor’s 2014 Spring/ Summer collection. She was right on the dot with this collection, classic but with an edgy twist that features pieces that say so 2014. The consistency and eclectic style of each item balanced itself, and ultimately created the idea of what we wanted to see this season. Anything goes with this collection simple elegant pieces that transcend into suave-esq, casual blends that add a certain relevance to what a look should define this year. Light and playful meets an exciting twist with looks so clean and easy to put together we’ve already ordered half the line from Neiman’s.

FASHION FOR THE PAGES BOOTH MOORE LOS ANGELES TIMES

W

F

hether you’re an aspiring fashionista or just looking for some inspiration, a couple of books published this fall might fill the bill. In “Rock in Fashion,” menswear designer John Varvatos breaks down the elements of rock ‘n’ roll style that have inspired him since his youth in Detroit in the 1960s and ‘70s, looks including Robert Plant’s “way too small” girls’ blouses, Elvis Costello’s shades and Bob Dylan’s scarves. More than a fashion book, it is a rich catalog of men’s style with more than 250 photographs of rock gods, from the Rolling Stones to the Kings of Leon. The images, shot by Mick Rock, Bob Gruen, Elliott Landy and other legendary lensmen, were curated by Varvatos, who provides commentary dissecting every detail. Each chapter is devoted to a specific style flourish _ hair, sunglasses or military jackets, for example. There are well-known images, such as that of Jimi Hendrix in his velvet military coat with gold-braided trim, which inspired a design in Varvatos’ spring 2002 collection. And there are lesser-known images, such as that of Thin Lizzy’s Phil Lynott in an outsized afro and tribal necklace. (“What’s the first thing about a person that says rock ‘n’ roll?” Varvatos writes. “Hair.”) Then there are the images that Varvatos created himself. Since 2005, he has collaborated on ad campaigns for his line with musicians who include Iggy Pop, Willie Nelson and Alice Cooper. A 2007 image of Cooper in a tux and top hat, posed with an 18foot anaconda draped over his shoulders and across his lap, seems likely to become as iconic as the ones Varvatos so diligently studied.

“Perry Ellis: An American Original” is the first monograph devoted to the 1970s- and ‘80s-era sportswear designer who mentored Marc Jacobs, Isaac Mizrahi and many others. The lavish book includes editorial, ad campaign and runway images unearthed from the archives of L.A.-based photographer Erica Lennard, with whom Ellis worked almost exclusively, as well as sketches and other historical material. Ellis, born and raised in Virginia, came on the scene at the same time Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein were launching their businesses in New York. But instead of Anglo American heritage or Minimalist polish, Ellis built his brand on clean-cut American style in the form of effortless soft tailoring, including giant-shouldered coats over straight corduroy skirts and baggy pants worn with shrunken hand-knit sweaters. Much of his clothing had a collegiate feel that the designer himself described as “the slouch look.” And, indeed, the book tells the story of his first major fashion show, for the fall 1978 season, for which Ellis imported Princeton’s cheerleading squad to lead a pep rally on the runway. The book offers insight to connect the dots to Jacobs, who was mentored by Ellis at the Parsons School for Design and who eventually took over the brand in 1988 after Ellis died. Jacobs showed his own “slouch look” with the 1992 grunge collection he designed for the Perry Ellis label. As Jacobs writes in the foreword, “Perry, for me, offered the possibility that American fashion could be fashion as I imagined it. It could have a voice: young, personal, whimsical, emotional, creative _ something that pulls at your heart.”
