A local teacher, Ingrid Burger, who was crowned as Mrs United Nations Western Cape last year, is launching the first Christian-based pageant for young girls and boys who dream to make a difference in the lives of children in their community. This idea started after she founded her project, Acting Hope, at the beginning of last year. Acting Hope is a charitable project using drama as a therapy in healing broken children and giving hope and confidence to children of farming communities in the Western Cape. Acting Hope has been very successful and has been awarded the best community based project in 2012. The programme is now in the process of being registered as a non-profitable organisation. “There are so many young children with a desire to make a difference and give hope to others around them, and this will be their greatest opportunity,” Burger, a teacher at Gene Louw Primary, said. “Through this competition, children can be made aware of other children’s needs and heartache. They can get guidance to build on ideas and reaching out, making a difference in children’s lives,” she said. The competition is open for all girls and boys from 12 to 19 years old, who feel that they would like to participate and get in-

Great opportunity to shine “When am I ever going to use this in my everyday life?” is the question nearly every child asks about mathematics. Most children (and even some parents) are unable to see that maths is not simply about the work in the textbook. It’s about teaching children higher-order thinking skills, problem-solving skills and analytical thinking skills. Maths is about logical reasoning and abstract thinking. It’s these very skills that children will need to solve the problems facing their generation. Many universities and universities of technology in South Africa require that learners attain good marks in maths and/or physical science for many courses. In most schools, also in the northern suburbs, between 40 % and 70 % of students are actually doing maths literacy rather than pure maths.

With this in mind, Good Better Best Tuition Services was established in 2002. They have started a branch in Bellville for northern suburbs learners and offer classes in both Afrikaans and English. With class sizes not exceeding seven learners, they offer affordable and effective mathematics and accounting tuition to Grade 8 to 12 learners. Last year they achieved a 100 % matric pass rate. V TygerBurger have now partnered with Good Better Best Tuition Services to give five learners the opportunity to attend tuition at the Bellville branch for free for the whole of 2013. For more information on how to apply, see the adjacent advertisement. V Call Lucille or John for enquiries on 021 706 8405 or 082 817 7078.
