‘Tis the season! Engagement season that is. The majority of proposals take place from Thanksgiving to Valentine’s Day, so chances are you’re getting ready to start planning your wedding. And what better location could you ask for than New York City? First things first, check out our handy checklist (page 10) on how to pick the right vendors to bring your vision to life. We cannot stress enough how important it is to find a team that is the right fit for you, especially if you're hiring a wedding planner. Next up, your registry! Gone are the days that limited you to tabletop pieces and appliances. Today’s modern wedding registry can include anything from turntables to travel accessories. See our picks for todie-for registry items and where to find them in The Mostest (page 11). Once you’ve picked a date and booked the venue it’s time to shop for your gown. You should start shopping for your wedding dress a year to nine months before your wedding, and order it no less than six months prior. We can’t get enough of the biggest trend for 2017: sleeves! From sheer and sexy to tailored and preppy, we have all the variations of the new sleeved look and where to find them (page 45). Not sure what details to include in your ceremony and reception? JEREMY WACHALTER Jeremy Wachalter, a/k/a The Caterer according to New York magazine’s 2013 Weddings issue, is the owner of Cobblestone Catering and a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America. His globally-influenced menus are decidedly delicious, with an emphasis on quality and seasonal ingredients. Based in Cobble Hill, Brooklyn, the Rockland County native trained at some of the most well respected restaurants in the world, including The Modern, Town, Union Pacific and Tra Vigne. How would he describe his menu offerings? “Contemporary American Cuisine that is sophisticated yet approachable.” We couldn’t agree more.

She’s the style genius behind many bridal fashion editorials and ad campaigns that you see in your favorite bridal magazines. A graduate of the Fashion Institute of Technology, with a BFA in design, Annie’s work, which continues to push the traditional boundaries of wedding style, brings a fresh, fashion-forward look that inspires brides. Her work and expertise can be regularly found in The Knot magazine and on Style Me Pretty. Go Team! When shopping for wedding vendors be sure to hire people whose work complements your style and whose personalities click with yours. The best place to find a vendor is through personal recommendations, so ask recentlymarried friends who they hired and if they liked working with them. If you're planning on hiring a wedding planner book them first because he or she will have an encyclopedic knowledge of the talented vendors who will suit both your style and budget. Vendor directories, whether online or printed, can help you narrow down your vendors-to-see list, but be aware that some lists are pay-to-play so take those reviews with a grain of salt. (Non-paid directories you can trust include, New York magazine's Weddings Listings, Martha Stewart Weddings' top guides and of course the Twirl List.) View portfolios online, including Instagram, to get an idea of a company's style.

Before setting up appointments call ahead or review a company's website to learn what their starting price or price range is. Draft a list of questions for each vendor. Ask them about their aesthetic, how they work with clients and, of course, pricing. If mom and dad are helping to cover wedding costs, ask them if they'd like to attend a vendor meeting. It would be nice if you could include them in the ones that are most important to them.
For food related meetings, find out how many people you can bring with you. If it's an initial meeting, the caterer or baker may not plan a full-scale tasting, but when they do, you may not be able to bring more than a few key people with you. Read each contract carefully and flag anything that concerns you. And note the payment schedule. Deposits may be anywhere from 10-50% of the final bill. 10

Should You Register? Some couples don’t want to create a wedding registry for various reasons, but they are actually doing a disservice to their guests. Keep the following in mind when deciding if you should create one for your wedding.

Friends and family are going to get you a gift for your wedding and other nuptial celebrations whether you like it or not. By not letting them know what you’d like or need, you put the onus and stress on them to try and find something they think you’d like. If you truly don’t think you need anything for your home, register for experience gifts you can enjoy together while on your honeymoon or when you get back. Wedding registries are no longer limited to kitchen, dining, bedroom and bathroom items. elegant tents & atriums Celebrating in a tent doesn’t mean you have to send in the clowns. The design for a tented event can range from classic and simple to bold and over the top. “With a tent you have the ability to create any kind of environment you like,” Jill Gordon of Jill Gordon Celebrate in East Hampton tells Twirl New York. “And also opens up a whole array of venues that might not ordinarily by an option, such as gardens, beaches and your own backyard.” Once the season and space are determined your wedding design team can create the fantasy world you’re envisioning, whether it’s nautical themed by the shore, or recreating Versailles’ Hall of Mirrors on the grounds of an estate.

grand ballrooms Many people choose a ballroom because much of the decor is already taken care of. From elegant chandeliers to dramatic columns or balconies, ballrooms often have a set decor on which the planner or florist can play off of, creating an aesthetically pleasing scene. And while the carpeting and wallpaper may be set, you can always alter the look of the room using lighting, drapes and flooring. "The traditional ballroom layout allows for the best of both worlds when it comes to wedding dĂŠcor," says Bill Spinner, Director of Catering at The Pierre, A Taj Hotel. "Along with open space, traditional ballrooms tend to be elegant in design, which helps to support the ambiance a couple is looking to create with the dĂŠcor they bring in."

rustic environs Many couples are turning to the great outdoors for their big day celebration. “Rustic weddings are usually located on sprawling farm and vineyard properties,” says Joanna Lenck from Square Mile Events, “and are typically held in barns, tents or farmhouses.” With a barn, winery or other rural-style building you can play up the bucolic appeal in your decor choices. Color palettes, florals, tables and chairs can all be of a “less is more” or an all-out rustic-yet-rich approach when it comes to the wedding’s details. Even the menu can enhance the setting with farm-to-table foods and a family-style set up. If you don’t want to travel far beyond the city limits for your rustic wedding, there are plenty of blank canvas venues or rural-inspired locations in the boroughs.

SQUAD GOALS Stylish looks for your bridesmaids Long gone are the days when bridesmaids wore dresses that were never to be worn again. After taking cues from brides who wanted their bridesmaids in fashionable frocks, designers have created a wide range of runway looks that are sure to get dozens of hearts on Instagram posts. Couples getting married in a ballroom, barn or on a beach will have plenty of colorful and dramatic dresses to choose from. Some even by the designers who dress A-list stars like Sofia Vergara and Duchess Kate. When shopping for bridesmaid dresses for your BFFs keep in mind where the wedding is and the formality of it, as well as each ‘maid’s personal style and what will flatter her. They’re back. After the puffy trends of the 80's made bridal sleeves the ultimate fashion faux pas, sleeves proved to be more popular than strapless on the 2017 designer runways. While Princess Diana’s voluminous sleeves started the 80’s sleeve trend, once again we can thank a Princess for inspiring brides around the world to creatively cover their arms. The Duchess of Cambridge, via Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen, showed us sleeves can be sophisticated, and yes, even sexy. "Sleeves are back in the mix and taking an important role in bridal trends,” confirms bridal designer Ines Di Santo. “Even for the bride who is selecting a sensual gown, adding a sleeve can elevate the look in a classic
direction. Sometimes, it is every bit as much about what you cover as it is what you select to share.” Today’s sleeves come in various styles and draw inspiration from different eras of fashion. This latest season, designers drew inspiration from the 70’s to create modern Boho-bridal sleeves. With a dramatic bell, a wrist flounce or even a tailored balloon, these sleeves add drama, intrigue and modern elements to the sexy, fitted bridal gowns of today. Not sure how to pull off this look? ometimes love is just meant to be. Katie and Connor first met in elementary school, and became high school sweethearts. The pair stayed together through college and post-grad plans, and when it came time to propose, Connor decided to pop the question in Quogue, New York where Katieâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s family owns a summer home. They knew this was where they should have their wedding.

By having the wedding in her parents' backyard, Katie hoped to avoid a cookie-cutter event. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I have spent many birthdays, holidays and special times with friends and family at the house," she tells Twirl New York. "I thought nothing would be more special than getting married in the backyard of the house my parents built. They picked out everything from the door knobs to the floors. "It was our dream to get married at the sweet and beautiful church in town and then have the reception close by at my parents' house, which made sure our guests didn't have to travel too far." Through creative inspiration and the help of their wedding planners, Sarah Duke and Taylor Van Deusen of Duke + Van Deusen, the couple hosted a "dinner party" in an open-air tent set-up in the backyard. "We wanted one large dinner party that felt as if it was an extension of our home with touches of color and pattern,â&#x20AC;? explains the bride.

"It was important to Katie to incorporate color, so together we chose a vibrant orange, blue and white color palette for the event," says Sarah Duke. "To create something out of the ordinary, we mixed and matched beautiful linens sourced through La Tavola. Ginger jars and lamps from her family's home were incorporated in the tent, adding a personal touch.” “I love the color orange and I've always thought it was so vibrant and beautiful. The blue paired nicely and felt a little beachy,” adds Katie. The bride credits her mother with the idea to incorporate the stripes detail. “We loved the blue and white stripe so much," shared Katie. "It felt classic, preppy and nautical all at the same time. It was initially used on the invitations and found itself on many aspects of our wedding including the bouquets, cookie gift boxes, wedding cake, flower girl dresses and the champagne bottles!” And while stripes, different shaped tables with uniquely patterned tablecloths and vibrant colors were the decor accents of the day, the great food was just as memorable. “Towards the end of the night we had mini cheeseburgers, French fries, milk and cookies and strawberry shooter shakes being passed," recalls Katie. "The highlight of the desserts though was the freshly made Dreesen Donuts that were made for the guests. People are still talking about the donuts!”

hat ended as a fairy-tale wedding certainly had a bump along the way (or not really a bump, but a visit to the hospital). Alina and Adam, introduced by mutual friends, were on their fourth date in Central Park when a skywriter above had written the words, “Alina, will you marry me?” Both Alina and Adam saw this, and Adam immediately reacted by getting down on one knee, making a joke out of an extremely strange coincidence. Everything was going in the right direction, but Alina was surprised with this sudden proposal. In truth, this message from above was intended for another couple in the park that day, where a man was proposing to another Alina. With her name being rather unusual, “I had never known another Alina in my life,” the bride tells Twirl New York, she assumed Adam’s proposal was really happening, while at the same time she was shocked given the brevity of the relationship. Her reaction? She had a panic attack, passed out, and Adam had to take her to the hospital. Alina recovered and two years later, Adam proposed for real, this time in Tuscany near a monastery called Camaldoli. Without fainting, Alina said yes.

The couple decided to have a traditional Roman Catholic wedding ceremony at the Church of the Blessed Sacrament on the Upper West Side. The priest who married Alina's parents and baptized her performed the service.

For the reception they chose The Foundry, an unconventional space in Long Island City. The couple loved the industrial feel of the venue, finding it clean and modern, and while it would take more resources to pull it all together, they could more easily personalize the space, something important to Alina and Adam. After picking their wedding date and a venue, it was time to book the rest of their wedding planning and design team. “I had been to a friend’s wedding who used Matthew Robbins and loved his work so I knew it would be beautiful,” says Alina. Mr. Boddington’s Studio designed the wedding invitations and Christian Oth Studio shot the wedding. Lyndsey Hamilton Events was hired to oversee everything and executed the day seamlessly. For her gown, Alina chose a wedding dress by Carolina Herrera. “I was smitten by Carolina Herrera because the store experience was so magical,” she explains. “I loved the deconstructed bow and the heavy satin. I think it’s stunningly sophisticated!” The bride and groom, their parents and siblings, who served as maid-of-honor and best man, stayed at The Plaza the night before and got ready in the world-famous hotel’s luxury suites, and were able to take advantage of the proximity to Central Park for some memorable photographs. “If I had to describe my wedding I would say it was filled with so much love,” Alina shares. “People came from all over the world–it was a destination wedding for most–and it was magical.” WINTER 2 017

ebecca and Greg dated all through their four years at Union College, as well as long distance during law school. While she was in Boston at Boston University, and he was in Atlanta at Emory University, they continued their relationship, knowing full well they would wind up back in New York, where both of their families reside. While their path to being together might have been predicted, Greg came up with a proposal that was original, sentimental and all-out special. “Greg told me he had a business trip in Albany near our alma mater, Union College, and asked if I wanted to go with him,” Rebecca tells Twirl New York. “When we were in college, he used to go on runs on Sundays and bring me back The New York Times. While in my old dorm room, The Times was sitting on the desk and inside was a printout announcing our engagement. While I was reading the article, Greg had gotten down on one knee behind me.”

For their wedding, Rebecca and Greg wanted a soft, warm, inviting and romantic look and feel. The bride, who had envisioned an outdoor wedding, knew The Garrison with its sweeping mountain views was the perfect location as soon as she saw it. “The natural beauty of the site is what drew us to it. We wanted to incorporate it as much as we could into the look and feel of the wedding,” Rebecca explains. “We had our calligrapher make an M monogram, for our last name, and played the design off the mountain setting. Ceci New York created a watercolor picture of the ceremony site, and it was used in our save the dates and the envelope liners of our invitations.” A lot of personal touches were incorporated into the celebration. Rebecca's bouquet was wrapped with satin from her mother's wedding dress, the chuppah was formed by Rebecca’s father’s and Gregory’s grandfather’s tallit, and the key design of the escort cards was a nod to the bride’s family's hardware business. To keep the key theme going, Greg surprised Rebecca by having his groomsmen wear key tie bars. To personalize his own wedding-day look, Greg wore cufflinks from his maternal grandfather and a tie bar from his paternal grandfather. And in keeping with the sentimental details, the flower girl, Ava, was the daughter of Rebecca's cousin who was the flower girl at her parent's wedding. For her wedding dress, Rebecca chose a Monique Lhuillier gown – the first wedding gown she tried on. The bride went to Kleinfeld, the same salon her mother bought her wedding dress. Her bridesmaids wore Hitherto dresses from BHLDN with sheer lace straps and a wrapped bodice, and a sweet dress by US Angels was found at Nordstrom for the flower girl. WINTER 2 017

The couple decided that while they wanted a romantic and warm feeling throughout the day, it would begin with some fun. Working with their wedding planner, Danielle Bobish of CUE: Curtain Up Events, guests were entertained during the cocktail hour with lawn games. “Our guests loved playing cornhole against the background of the moutains,” remembers Rebecca. “And we had a giant Jenga game set up outside too.” With a pink and gold color scheme, candles and up lighting on the tables were used to keep everything feeling soft, warm, and romantic. As the reception started the couple shared their first dance to Passenger Seat by Death Cab for Cutie, the song that was playing when they had their first kiss so many years ago. They kept the party going long into the night, even having their driver take them to the after party that they weren’t originally planning to attend. “We just didn't want the night to end!” says the bride. “We wanted to spend a little more time with everyone, and enjoy it all with our friends and family. "

A custom menu is great. We take into consideration where the bride and groom met, where they come from and their cultures to create a personalized menu. We can easily add a touch of the palette's color, but I'm not so sure it would be noticed and we would hate to compromise the taste of the food just to fit in fuchsia.

My favorite is passed desserts. It gets people out of their seats and moving around the room. Dessert stations are fun and interesting and forces guests to mingle with each other. You never know who you will bump into at the Tart Table!
