With Alexander Gustafsson out with a knee injury, the UFC found a replacement for Jon Jones to fight in his upcoming title defense. Although it would have been nice to see a rematch between Jones and Gustafsson, the match between Daniel Cormier and Jones is becoming an exciting one to look forward to. Aug. 4 marked the first day of the UFC 178 media tour. It became immediately clear after the first staredown between the two that things between current Light Heavyweight champion Jon “Bones” Jones and Daniel Cormier were getting fierce. During the staredown Jones got a bit too close for Cormier’s comfort, and he shoved Jones in the throat. What followed was a full-on brawl: Jones went on the attack and began throwing punches right there, while officials and promoters tried to pry the two apart. Since the match was announced, the two have been taunting each other on Twitter and in interviews. However, due to an injury suffered during training (a torn meniscus in his left knee and a sprained ankle), Jones will be unable to fight at UFC 178. The new date for the fight is set for UFC 182. Now that the fight has been pushed back, Alexander Gustafsson wants back in for his title shot and says that by the time of the match, he will be healed and ready to go. However, UFC President Dana White says he’ll have to wait for his shot and likely face Anthony “Rumble”
Johnson, with the victor fighting the winner of the championship bout. I don’t mind waiting for the Gustafsson rematch because with tensions so high, this is sure to be a great fight between Jones and Cormier. These are the fights we wait for: two incredibly talented fighters who are hungry for the gold and go at it like beasts. Cormier comes into this fight with an impressive wrestling background, although we haven’t seen if he still has the same strength as he did at heavyweight before he came down to the 205-lb. weight division. There surely has been significant muscle reduction in the weight cut, but could he be faster at 205 with less muscle to carry around? We will see. Jones, on the other hand, has proven himself over and over to be great in almost all aspects of his game, and only seems to improve every time we see him. He has the skill, drive and speed, and he is a great wrestler and striker. Not to mention he towers over the challenger, which leads me to believe Cormier will definitely try to take Jones down and use his wrestling. What I have noticed in a lot of Jones’ fights is that he will bring the other fighter’s greatest strength in and use it against them. I’m curious to see if employs this tactic with Cormier. In any case, it is sure to be a great fight with many other good fights on the card as well. You can catch it live on Payper-view on Jan. 3, 2015.w

Eagles will have a tough fight against Wolfpack Somehow, it doesn’t seem like it has been nine months since that November evening Georgia Southern fans spent basking in the glow of a victory over Florida. Eagle fans didn’t want to leave the stadium — and most didn’t leave for at least an hour Alex after the game had ended. It was arguably the biggest win in program history as it came against one of the top BCS-level programs in the country. But now it’s time to go back to work. Georgia Southern must build off that win and ride that wave of momentum into its first season as an FBS program. The Eagles are back in action this weekend against another BCS opponent in North Carolina State of the ACC. Maybe I’m alone here, but the offseason seemed to fly by and I can’t believe it’s already football season again. You won’t
hear me complain about it, though. Saturday afternoon, Georgia Southern opens a new era of football. The Eagles are now members of the Sun Belt Conference and the Football Bowl Subdivision. Southern also Brown has a new coaching staff as Head Coach Willie Fritz begins his tenure with the blue and white. So what can we expect this weekend? Honestly, I have no idea. NC State is coming off a disappointing 3-9 season last year. But it is head coach Dave Doeren’s second season at the helm in Raleigh after two very successful seasons at Northern Illinois, where he went 23-4 with two MAC championships and an Orange Bowl berth. He also has served as an assistant coach at USC, Montana, Kansas and Wisconsin. He has won nearly everywhere he has been, so I

The Wolfpack returns seven starters on both sides of the ball — both the punter and kicker and a total of 35 letterwinners from last year — so they will be an experienced team. Of those 16 starters returning, seven are linemen (4 OL, 3 DL), so this team should be pretty good up front. State is breaking in a new starting quarterback in Florida transfer Jacoby Brissett, and running back Shadrach Thornton is returning after leading the team with 694 yards on the ground despite missing three games in 2013. Georgia Southern will be chomping at the bit to get back on the field and show the win over Florida to end last season was no fluke. The Eagles still have something to prove, but beating NC State will be no easy task. The biggest concern I have with the Eagles against NC State this weekend is in the trenches. Southern’s offensive line is full of experience, but these guys have played in the triple option system their entire careers. The new offensive system is very different, with more zone blocking and less downfield cut blocking. The defensive line is very talented, but there isn’t much depth with experience. It will be interesting to see how that unit does against a veteran BCS-level offensive line. I can see this going one of two ways. Southern will either be able to stand toe-to-toe with the Wolfpack, or the combination of the new system, new coaching staff and new faces on the field will cause miscues that allow NC State to pull away and win easily. So my prediction will be somewhere
in between. I hate to start the year by picking a loss, but I try to make these picks with my head and not my heart. What good would making a prediction be if I just picked Southern to win every week? Tattler Prediction: The Eagles hang tough, but early mistakes put them in too deep of a hole to recover. After Brandon Stanton lost his stock market trading job, he set out to create an exhaustive catalog of every person in New York, which evolved into Humans of New York (HONY), a project in which Stanton takes pictures of New Yorkers on the street and interviews them. The finished product is a series of photos of people with tales ranging from ex-convicts to aspiring Bollywood stars, and the HONY Facebook page has more than 9 million likes. But recently, Stanton hasn’t been on the streets of New York City. He’s teamed up with the United Nations to heighten awareness of the Millennium Development Goals — eight goals like halving the extreme poverty rate and ending the spread of HIV, all by the target date of 2015 — which some are saying won’t happen. Stanton is now taking pictures in places like Erbil, Iraq, Zaatari Refugee Camp in Jordan and the Democratic Republic of Congo on a world tour with the U.N. to expose the stories of people all over the world. “It would be rather foolish to claim that these portraits and stories
