Sarah Bishop, Austin Bird With a Branch 21" x 18" Collage, Gouache, Ink and Pencil The artist says: "starting with a drawing of flowers in crayon at the age of 2, I wanted to be an artist and was always making “things. After earning a BFA from UT in 1983, I embarked on dual careers as professional chef and designer, both of which offered outlets for creativity and use of color, texture, and design. My current work involves the synchronicity among components with a strong emphasis on design. I re-use vintage paper and am drawn to technical, scientific, geographical, and mathematical subjects because they provide an abstract appeal to both left- and right-brain aspects of myself. The natural environment (insects, animals, nests, grasses, plants, etc.) and vast expanses of West Texas are an important source of inspiration for me." Born in Adelaide, Australia, Breakey attended art school then began teaching while pursuing photography. By enlarging each final print to a 32-inch square, she also increases its poignancy, and as a final tribute she paints the subject, applying several layers of transparent oils and then tracing over feathers, scales, etc. with colored pencils. The results put her "in a class by herself", says Bill Wittliff. Represented by the Stephen Clark Gallery in Austin. Through precise renditions of ancestors, progeny, and enchantments that never were, I ask the viewer to "Remember when?" and to join in "Let's pretend." Bill Nowlin, Austin Gathering Reeds 27" x 21" Photograph Bill Nowlin's professional career as an electrical engineer didn't allow much time to explore his passion for photography. In 1996, he retired and renewed his love for photography and the great outdoors. Photography's unique pairing of precision technology and creative freedom inspired both his interests in science and art. He says: "My favorite photographs are dramatic scenes that inspire the imagination - full of rich tones of vivid color. I enjoy looking at photographs where you can quickly tell what the subject is and appreciate it, but when you look deeper you find another layer of meaning - something that causes you to experience a unique, personal connection to the scene or the subject." 11" x 14" Photography / Archival Pigment Print Lesley Nowlin has centered much of her professional career on photographing and documenting people from the Latin American regions. Mesmerized by experiences far beyond her own realm, Nowlin has crossed borders to capture intimate portraits of people's lives and conditions. She has gracefully done this by relying on what drew her to photography in the first place; simply exploring and capturing on film what she sees. As a proponent of the image, Nowlin strives to grasp a moment in time that evokes enough power and mood to stand alone. She focuses on the single telling image, making it her goal to let it speak for itself. Beginning professional life with a biology degree, I have morphed from research assistant to pharmaceutical sales representative to firearms examiner for the TX Dept. of Public Safety Crime Lab. In 1998, I dedicated myself to art on a full time basis. As an oil painter, my work was represented and collected both in the US and internationally. I began simple explorations in glass in an effort to stimulate a move to abstraction. Glass became a way to describe imagery less literally than my painting, and eventually I developed it as my primary medium."
