The author is dead.

New blood. New breed. New direction.

This statement dominated the discussions during the first Parish of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (PIHM) Media Ministry Writing Workshop held last May 29 at the Assumption Antipolo CSS Kiosk. Present at the 5-hour worskhop were a subset of members from the Tugon newsletter staff, led by guest speaker Mrs. Chay Florencio, a BA Filipino major from the University of the Philippines, Diliman, and formerly a teacher in Campus Journalism at the High School Department of St. Paul College, Pasig. The workshop topics reinforced by her professional experience deemed valuable and most fit for the writing-related concerns of the Media Ministry. The activity was introduced through a brief discussion of essential concepts regarding news writing and feature article writing, together with some tips on working with the newsletter layout; the enlightening workshop proper then followed. This involved critiquing of each writer’s article drafts, with every participant contributing his/her own comments and suggestions for the improvement of the article under scrutiny. With this, a new concept, “the author is dead,” was introduced, encouraging each writer’s acceptance of criticism and appreciation of praise in silence, leaving his personal counter arguments aside until the rest of the team had finished reviewing the “dead author’s” work. Each one is then given the floor at the end of the review to express his/her side. With each “resurrection” came a beginning of a new kind: the writers, now more informed and enlightened, have become more open to criticism, to other people’s ideas, and to positive change. Countdown to August!

News updates on World Youth Day 2011 By Karina Mendoza

A New Chapter for

Mary Mother of The Church ChapeL

While it was difficult at first for the Daang Bakal community to say goodbye to the chapel within the SAIDI (Southeast Asia Interdisciplinary Development Institute) formation house where masses were held every Sunday for the past 28 years, this change paved the way to the birth of the Parish’s newest chapel, the Mary Mother of the Church Chapel. Built within the same vicinity and now home to around 200 regular mass-goers, the chapel was blessed with its first Holy Mass last Easter Sunday, April 24, 2011, by our parish priest, Fr. Sandy Enhaynes. Regular masses will be held there every Sunday at 9:15 A.M by Monsignor Pete and Fr. Bernard, alternately, of the Mary Mother of the Church Congregation.

This coming August, delegates from the Diocese of Antipolo, along with thousands of youth from around the world will once again gather to celebrate our Catholic faith during the 2011 World Youth Day (WYD) in Madrid, Spain. Fr. Sandy Enhaynes, our Parish Priest, will head the delegation. What started as a 58-member delegation from the diocese is now down to 25 delegates, with Aika Montes as the sole representative from our parish. Aika has been an active member of the Sacred Music Ministry for the past 11 years since our parish was still being established. Construction Updates Partial materials for the church roofing/canopy have already been purchased and now being installed. Finishing of the canopy, roofing and railing is targeted to be done next. Next step would be the construction of the Archbishop’s Walk, which is estimated to cost 2million pesos. This is the main access to the ground floor of our Church.

ba Syempre!

Kids Grades 3 to 6 from the Catechism classes of each community in the Parish gathered together last May 13 to participate in Camp Maria, the first-ever Marian Camp for kids held in PIHM. The camp was made possible by Munting Sambayanan ni Kristo (MSK) leaders, teachers, youth volunteers, and some of our own parish workers. They made all the preparations - from the setting up of the eight centers which surrounded the parish grounds to distributing giveaways to all of the participants. Q:

Why do we revere SAINTS?

WHY DO CATHOLICS SEEM TO BE IN A RUSH IN PROCLAIMING SOMEONE HOLY? John Paul II died on April 2, 2005; it’s been only 6 years and already he is called blessed. No doubt will he soon be made a saint. A: In Pope John Paul II’s case, it does seem quick; but he is more the exception than the rule. (Mother Teresa is, too) Actually, the Church does not “make” saints; only God can. What she does is to recognize the unusually excellent holiness of a deceased man or woman after a formal process has verified it. Q: DO ALL SAINTS GO THROUGH THIS PROCESS? A: Well, in the early Church, some had been honored by tradition: particular persons in the Bible seen as exemplars of holiness, apostles, martyrs, confessors, etc. But from the 10th century onwards, as the Church expanded and developed, a universal formal method of judgment was devised and modified over time. Q: WHAT DOES THIS PROCESS INVOLVE? 1. PUBLIC ACCLAMATION. - Christians in a community or a religious order or organization convinced of the extraordinary holiness of one of their own who has died, make private devotions to him, seek his intercession and campaign for his beatification. With positive results from his intercession, they apply 6

ICAL STUDY of the Venerable’s life. The miracle supposedly resulting from his intercession is reviewed until the Roman physicians are completely satisfied that “There is no scientific explanation from what has occurred.” Examples are: healing, body intact long after burial, etc.

for the opening of their candidate’s cause to the local bishop with all the relevant information and evidence. Thereupon, the candidate is called SERVANT OF THE LORD. 2. CONVENING a board of experts - They cautiously probe the candidate’s life, quality of his faith and service through numerous questions and interviews. Any miracle attributed to his intercession is carefully investigated by doctors and scientists. If everything adds up, the bishop sends the papers to Rome, to the Congregation for the Cause of Saints. The candidate gets the title of VENERABLE. 3. THOROUGH HISTORICAL-CRIT-

4. BEATIFICATION - The Congregation forwards the cause to the Pope. When all requirements are approved.. and the latter rules for beatification, the Venerable is called BLESSED and can now be honored in public. 5. CANONIZATION - To proclaim one is Saint, everyone waits: even the Vatican waits, letting God take control. Once the BLESSED is credited with another authenticated miracle, accepted as a sign from God of his heroic virtues/holiness, then the Blessed has passed the final test; and as his reputation for holiness continues to grow worldwide, the Pope is likely to canonize and command the public veneration of the newly proclaimed saint by the Universal Church. Just to let you know, there are cases where for lack of a miracle, some have been stuck as Venerable or Blessed for years, or for centuries even. Q: BUT WHAT OF ALL THE OTHER HOLY MEN AND WOMEN WHO HAVE DIED? SURELY THOUSANDS MUST HAVE LIVED LIVES OF GREAT VIRTUES YET ARE NOT BEATIFIED, MUCH LESS CANONIZED! cont. on page 8

Battle for the Health of the Family

ll life comes from a father and a mother, through an act of total love that can be sustained to provide care for the fruit of their love. True love gives true peace and joy and this gift has been made equally available to all, whether rich or poor. Technology has made it possible for partners to perform pleasurable acts without love for each other. It is now possible to experience pleasure without producing the ‘burden’. This destroys the beauty of the act of love. It cancels the challenges to develop meaningful relationships that are needed in true love. When these technologies were being popularized in the 1960s, Pope Paul VI issued the encyclical ‘Human Life’ or HUMANAE VITAE: The transmission of human life is a most serious role in which married people collaborate freely and responsibly with God the Creator. It has always been a source of great joy to them, even though it sometimes entails many difficulties and hardships. It had defined responsible parenthood as being faithful to God and to your spouse, hoping and trusting the Lord amidst the challenges of caring for

your family, and developing a great love for God and your family. Indeed, each one of us realizes the peace and joy of having a loving family. The practice of using methods and pills that hinder the total giving of love to one another is not an action of responsible parents. Those who are exercising sexual freedom use these things because they think they should be able to get the sexual pleasure of doing it with more than one. There are no government laws that prohibit the use of these methods and pills, except for abortion. The gadgets are readily available even in convenience stores and drugstores.

So what do we need the RH Bill for?

The purpose of the bill is to allow the government to use our money for purchasing and distributing these methods and pills to the poor for free. Is this the bill that will make them responsible parents? Proliferation of these gadgets will encourage sexual activities outside of marriage or doing the sex act with people

you do not love. T hus, having these methods around is anti-family. Also, the bill claims to protect the sexually liberated from the spread of HIV and AIDS. It did not mention the number one sexually transmitted disease: the human papillomavirus (HPV) which is the cause of cervical cancer. It subsists in the skin from the waist to the thigh. It transfers to the hand and even through the tongue. Thus it can be transmitted with or without a condom. If the government really was concerned, the ‘gadgets’ or methods therefore should include rubber gloves, rubber cover for tongues and rubber cycling shorts for the sexually free and active. Where life begins: Nature saw it fit that neither the egg cell from the mother, nor the sperm cell from the father should attach to any bacteria, virus or dirt and risk the formation of ‘X-men’ or mutants. The sterile environment in it had made the womb as a symbol of purity. The Hand of God is necessary cont. on page 11

A: That is the reason why we celebrate the feast of All Saints. Canonized or not, we remember and honor believers who have gone to their eternal rest in God’s merciful grace. Q: ONE LAST QUESTION: WHY DO CATHOLICS MAKE SO MUCH OF SAINTS? ARE YOU NOT CONCERNED OF IDOLATRY? A: The veneration of Saints is a uniquely Catholic practice; but they are and should always be venerated in a manner subordinated to the more glorious praise of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. It is God alone we worship and adore. The feasts of saints are in reality, celebrations of Christ through whom God’s grace came to men and women who were thus able to grow in great sanctity. We love our saints who are a vital part of our triangle community, (saints, souls in purgatory and we, the living). They intercede for us. We ask them to pray with us and for us

to the Father and to Jesus, the One, True and Ultimate mediator between God and us; and time and again, they have proved considerable “influence” on the Power that is in heaven. We honor them in whom we see concretely the wonderful work of God. They are evidences of the Gospel truths: God loves us, truly saves believers, does marvelous things for sinners, pours out His spirit and keeps His light shining to guide us out of the dark. They are signs of the Kingdom we all aspire to reach. They are our models. Coming from all walks of life, occupation, race, nationality; they inspire us to imitate them in our life. Each one of them shows some particular trait of Jesus and in imitating them, we imitate Him. Finally, we claim the Church to be holy, to be with grace. The saints help us see that holiness is not just a possibility or a challenge. HOLINESS IS A REALITY. It is not an impractical idea

meant for the “goody-goody”. Not at all! Just read the lives of some saints. Holiness is an ATTAINABLE REALITY to which all of us are called. Or else, why would the Lord command us to pursue it? “Just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do, for it is written: ‘BE HOLY FOR I AM HOLY.’ “ (1 Pe 1:15) Sources: Dodds, Bill: Making Saints” McBrien, Richards: “Mary and the saints”

A spiritual autobiography of St. Augustine who wrote the Confessions in 399 A.D.,having been twelve years a Catholic and three years a bishop. In him the Church found its first towering intellect, if not its last, for another six hundred years. St. Augustine, as a man, was a mix of intense sexual passion and held a passion for intellectual truth. Confessions, the most famous of all spiritual books is altogether timeless and virtually unsurpassed in evoking spiritual mood.

“THE RULE OF ST. BENEDICT” BY ANTHONY C. MEISEL AND M.L. DEL MASTRO A simple readable guide for spiritual perfection. St. Benedict wrote this guide in the 6th century for his monks at Monte Cassino, and it was followed from the Middle Ages down to the present by men and women in every Christian monastic community. In this book is a list of “the instruments of good works” and if we remember to use these tools, we will be rewarded in heaven. Beware, for the path isn’t easy at all, as it is masterfully strewn with the devil’s devious but subtle influences.

“OUT OF THE GARDEN, WOMEN WRITERS ON THE BIBLE” EDITED BY CHRISTINA BUCHMANN AND CELINA SPIEGEL A collection of essays by women and their take on particular Bible stories and its relevance to their own lives, with twenty-eight writers the likes of Fay Weldon (“Samson and His Women”);Kathleen Norris (“The Paradox of the Psalms”) and Ursula K. o cover an event as a photographer has long been one of my frustrations. Until just recently, not only had I been blessed with the chance to make it come true, but also got more than what I have bargained for. Last May 13, I came to the Parish ready with a camera and an observant mind to cover Camp Maria event expecting that it would be sort of exciting given the prior clues I had about the activities lined-up for the kids. But alas, I was proven wrong. As I stopped by the centers to capture memorable moments, I would find myself trying to look as if I was checking pictures in my camera when in fact I had been intently listening to the discussion. Seeing kids in their innocence and playful selves enjoy participating or just listening and responding to the volunteers gave me complete joy, as it was to an extent therapeutic. Up to this day, I am still amazed by how eager the kids had been to learn about the lives of Jesus and the Virgin Mary. Needless to say, the camp exceeded my expectations and at the end of the event I felt like a participant myself in ways more than one; only that I was taller, ahead of a few years and held a camera in my hands. 10

Album Review – From the Rooftops, Desperation Band ...from page 9 to our mass songs. However, my rate would be more on the musical and delivery side, like the way the American Idol judges do it- I give this an average 3.5. Why? Simplelike our mass songs, they are repetitive chants. Take “The Whole Earth” for example. Listening to that song, I feel like I have heard the line “The whole Earth is full of your glory!” in a single song more than I can endure in my whole life. It is a good song, yes, but somehow, you’ll drown in the repetitiveness of the lyrics. Appealing and as happy as they may sound, once you get to listen to this, days without end, you’ll get pretty burnt out, thus extinguishing the fire. It is good listening material, but I strongly believe it would be enjoyed better when included in a playlist with similar songs in its genre. It’s like when you eat a delicious fruit; pineapple, for example. It’s really good, but when you eat a lot of it, you get sick of its taste. If you mix it in a fruit

salad, with cream in all its glory, it will taste better and you’ll surely have more servings. `Listen to it yourself to give better justice to the album. You can usually get a copy of the album from your local record bar or your local stall of House of Praise where I got mine. And to end this review, I would just like to share with you what the band says in this and all their other albums- Remember that God is always good and we must shout it from the rooftops for all to hear cause He’s that good! Keep the peace and rock on! :)
