symbiosis: archive of interconnected relationships

[Symbiosis] is a type of relationship in which living creatures participating in a relationship benefit. We are going to live in hybrid environments where we need to consider superpositions and neighbouring principles more than ever in the age of augmentation. Thus, figuring symbiotic relations throughout the design process reveals new possibilities and hybrid relationships within space between the material/immaterial//living agents.

Hi! I’m Tugce. During my education, I have experienced different fields which have brought me an ability to connect science, technology, design and architecture in my practice and increased my adaptability to new areas of knowledge. I’m enthusiastic about learning, experimenting and making processes. I believe design is an action that spans the process which changes with time.

symbiosis: archive of interconnected relationships

Today, I trace two different worlds [virtual and real] which hybridizes, borders blur, and search in their endless environments. I enjoy visualisation and graphic design, I strongly believe the medium is inseparable from the thought it presents.

Project Description

03

Hybrid-space, is an in-between realm between physical and digital environment, offering a critical approach to the excitement of discovering the city of one’s memories or having an idea of what an upgraded city of the future will look like. In scope of the project, everyday objects, livings, and urban landscapes are scanned in three cities of Spain -Madrid, Valencia, and Barcelona to imagine public space of future cities .

Through the synthesis of these tangible elements into spatial 3D collages, the project seeks to re-imagine spatial configurations and unveil novel city scenes that blur the boundaries between the physical and the digital world.

symbiosis: archive of interconnected relationships

3D scans reveal movement and temporal context during the scanning process, often accompanied by distortions. In areas where machine algorithms struggle to interpret data, new volumetric relationships emerge. Similar to Gordon Matta-Clark’s approach of perforating buildings to unveil new possibilities in construction, the act of scanning transcends into a realm where space, time, and bodily connections converge.

Project Desciription Spolia botanique seeks to explore alternative botanodigital scenarios for future urban habitats. It aims to offer online and mobile experiences to initate a global collaboration for building augmented promenades and fluorescent urbanscapes drawn by the aromatic vibrations of a chlorophyllous renaissance. My role I was responsible for scanning in the site, cleaning the data, cataloging and anchoring the models in augmented reality, preparing visualisations&animations of 3D digital models, recomposing digital gardens and experimenting immersive experience in physical environment including sounds.

08

Project Description Augustus is a research project for the development of a mobile app that offers an “augmented promenade” along the life-size virtual reconstruction of the Wall of Phillippe Augustus in Paris. The app lets the users visualise in augmented reality the medieval wall, of which only a few fragments left in the dense urban fabric of the city. A hybrid urban space is formed by resuscitating and superposing in 3D fragments of medieval Paris over the contemporary space. My role I was responsible for scanning the remainant walls and placing 3D anchors on the site using Reality Capture and ARkit programs.

The physician-patient relationship, which declined after the neoliberal change in health, caused modern medicine to move away from its holism. Although the increase in suppressive drug therapy has made progress in the treatment of acute diseases, it is seen that it is insufficient in the treatment of chronic diseases that can be last for years. Therapeutic Landscapes is a holistic medicine center where people giving care to taking care.

Travertine Quarry & Protocell

When the demolition in the mines is over, the habitants of the village start to build a school for the next generations. The school is aimed for material research on regenerative material called protocell that will be grown over the years and stop abuse of natural sources.

save the quarry!

The travertine quarry in Asagidagdere village, which played an important role in the construction of the city of Laodekia still continues to operate and creating an articulated topography in Menderes. The travertines are continued to be removed today, affecting groundwater, and water level in the doline which decreases day by day. The marble quarry on the Kelkaya hill, which is located alongside of the village, causes stones falling down on the village by explosions during mining.

Phases

Phase 1 Villagers and children built up modular units of village institute. Against earthquake and slope slipping, the modular units were supported by a skeletal structure on feet.

Phase 2 Protocell agents are integrated into structure. They begin to undergo mineral carbonation to form the shell fed by the vessels//pipes are attached along the structure.

Phase 3 Erosion of calcium carbonate shell formations due to changing climate conditions and movements.

Phase 4 Continuous build up and erosion happens with geometric recursion.

A Living Material: Protocell

fall 2021-22

Protocells are synthetic cells growed in laboratory that mimics living cells by moving independently. Pre-protocells forms populations and they can secrete solid precipitates like calcium-carbonates that constitutes limestone which is a close relative of travertine.

In 2050, regarding the high CO2 emission of the industrial zone and the concrete factory located close by, protocell agents will be articulated here to produce the limestone, by emitting CO2.

A Data Center & A Bath

- Rem Koolhaas What and how could be archived in Cibali, Haliç where warehouses and storage are prominent in the time of 21st century? Thus, not only to remember the forgotten, but also to create new organic relations in urban area, a new public bath, which is in the place of demolished Ottoman Bath [Bostan Hamamı] would create a symbiosis with data center by using water.

Symbiosis

Transmission

The DataBath joins the infrastructure of the city by establishing a symbiotic relationship between the data center and a public bath.

The traditional data centers are generally located outside of the cities, placing its racks to large widths horizontally in order to lower the heat energy by volume. Although, DataBath does not need that high volumes due to heat circulation via water and new layout proposed for data racks; vertical stacking instead of horizontal which results in better integration in the future cities through its symbiosm.

Cold water from the bath comes to the data center, it goes up through the pipes on the façade and passes down through the veins of hot tube which chills the data circuits while it is warming up. Soon after, heated water is transmitted back to the bath through the underground pipes for public use.

Public Space Series - The City of Protests - Underground Occupation 2023

Keywords Photogrammetry, virtual memory, 3d collage Project Type Immersive experience Project Description “Can someone venture into my dreams, see what I see in life?” I ventured into public spaces throughout Paris, collecting scans and documenting my experiences in weekly journals presented as 3D collages. The purpose was to provide others with a means to explore the city through my perspective or imaginative lens. This endeavor raises inquiries into the implications of city ‘augmentation,’ examining which elements will be accentuated and which might be omitted.

Paris: The City of Protests A strange week. Universities are closed. Transportation continues to be disrupted. The garbage collector's union has organized and stopped cleaning the streets, so the streets are full of trash islands. I just saw two mice running into the dumpster. Walking the streets is like living in an apocalyptic world. People are going on strike for weeks for their future. (...) I wanted to rent a bike today, but some stations were closed due to the protests, people were racing each other to take a bike. (...) Pigeons walk more than fly in this city. Fortunately, digital pigeons do not die. (Paris, 20.03-26.03.2023)

It has been a week that I use the subway more, I realized that I did not miss the smell of it. And the train continues to not move. Finally, I gave up and got off the subway. An unexpected bike ride around the Seine on a cold day started to picture the map of the city in my head. This week, someone important to me came to visit me. Seeing the city with her is something else. (…) Truly, I don’t like the combination of cherry blossoms and rain. We pass through the underground labyrinths and get on the subway again. After considerable time spent underground, I want to teleport home from the subway. (…) It is lovely to see my plant growing wildly at home. One day it will grow big enough to envelop the whole city.
