85 YEARS AND STILL GOING STRONG While the nation’s two presidential candidates debate the virtues of their competing visions on how to move America forward, Texas Southern University has already been declared the victor in its efforts to profoundly impact the world. This 85-year institutional legacy of “Excellence in Achievement” continues to expand as alumni, faculty, and students alike show themselves to be true “Legends and Leaders.”

With the “Our Story” Project officially launched during a memorable Founders Day, and BBVA Compass Stadium christened as the new home of TSU football, we anxiously prepare for the 85th Anniversary Gala, celebrating ten outstanding alumni—and their respective colleges—for their roles in making history today.

Still, the campus plays home to students and faculty who by the sheer force of their accomplishments lobby for the hearts and minds of a new generation of potential students. Be it the legendary Joe Sample serving his alma mater as an artist-inresidence, or Professor Robert Bullard being named one of 50 “Everyday Heroes” contributing to a more perfect union, the Texas Southern Renaissance of Excellence can be seen near and far.

Whether it is in those who lead our athletic teams, individuals who mold the minds of tomorrow’s great thinkers, or students and alumni who garner votes of global confidence for their willingness to be great, the message of this institution is no mere campaign promise. Thurgood Marshall School of Law alumnus Harrison Gregg, Jr. was elected into the National Bar Association Lawyer Hall of Fame. He is senior assistant attorney for Harris County.

Marcellars Mason was named director of Human Resources of the Normandy School District in St. Louis, Missouri. With nearly 30 years of experience in education, Mason received his Ph.D. in Education from TSU. Alumnus Doug Delony is now a member of the news and digital team of KHOU 11 Houston. A native Houstonian, Delony earned a bachelor’s degree in broadcast journalism from TSU, cum laude. Before joining KHOU, Delony was a senior web producer at Fox 26 KRIV. Ethel Curtis (right), a proud 1998 graduate of the College of Education, was recently named Miss Dallas and Miss Texas in the Miss United America Pageant. An active member of the Dallas Alumni Chapter, she serves as vice president of membership. Dedicated to serving others, she is employed with the City of Dallas in the Women, Infants and Children Department. She also volunteers with the Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse.

SOPHISTICATED LADIES: President Rud-

Cupcakes & Conversations Gwen Gistarb ’70 creates a movement to strengthen bonds between mothers and daughters.

With an onslaught of music videos and provocative media images, today’s teenage girls have a lot of pressure. But Gwen Gistarb, a seasoned high school educator and author has a lesson plan that gives mothers the tools they need to support their daughters as they mature. Through her organization, Cupcakes and Conversation, and The Lesson Plan: A Workbook for Mothers and Teenage Daughters, Gistarb offers essential life skills to young women and their mothers.

By offering participants and readers tools for self-reflection and discovery, The Lesson Plan offers valuable methods for opening the lines of communication and bolstering self-esteem. In Cupcakes and Conversations workshops, teenage participants develop tools that help them to successfully navigate everyday issues through self-awareness exercises.

“The goal is to provide the essential life skills that girls of all ages need,” Gistarb says, noting that parental leadership and guidance becomes increasingly critical as girls reach puberty.

“From birth, mothers can create a relationships with their daughters that nourish the thin line between being a parent and friend to her daughter,” the Family and Consumer Sciences graduate shares. “Loving your daughter as you watch your mirrored image come into maturation is ultimately a great experience that both of you can cherish.”

ley and two distinguished alumnae reveled in the joy of Founders Day 2012 on September 14. On the president’s right, Helen (neè Sellers) Hampton, 88, is a proud alumna of TSU who flew in from Picayune, Mississippi to celebrate. A 1950 graduate, she was the first woman to earn a degree in chemistry from Texas State College for Negroes. In 1952 she received her M.S. in Chemistry. To the president’s left, Ella Sayles of Houston, Texas, 84, is a proud graduate who earned her B.S. in biology in 1949 and M.S. in Biology in 1956.

ARTISTIC MERIT:

While studying at Texas Southern in the late 1950s, Joe Sample (right) formed a band that eventually became the world-famous Jazz Crusaders.

This fall, he will be on campus as an Artist-in-Residence in the Department of Music. Sample will conduct master classes and work directly with music students. The public is invited to hear a live performance of the jazz legend’s work this December.

HE’S GOT GAME: Mike Davis was ap-

pointed Interim Head Men’s Basketball Coach. He arrives at TSU after six seasons coaching the University of Alabama at Birmingham men’s basketball program.Davis holds a 237-152 (.609) overall career record in his 12 years as a head coach, highlighted by seven 20+ win seasons.

BIG MAN ON CAMPUS There’s a new tiger on the field, but when it comes to challenges and championships, he’s no rookie. Meet Texas Southern University’s new head football coach, Darrell Asberry.

T

his year, the TSU Tigers will be the first collegiate football team to call the 22,000seat BBVA Compass Stadium “home.” And Tiger fans aren’t the only ones looking forward to an exciting football experience in a new stadium. Coach Darrell Asberry is, too.

We caught up with the former football coach of Shaw University to get his take on how he plans to lead his team to a new era of victory this fall.

How do you feel about the team playing in this new, state-of-the-art stadium?

It’s always good when something’s new and you’re the first to be a part of it. I used to pass by [the stadium] every morning while they were working on it. I’d sit out front for about 5 to 10 minutes and then go on into work. I just couldn’t wait to get on the inside of it.

We—the team and the coaching staff—have an opportunity to set the tone in there.

What do you do to combat a tough season and motivate your athletes? I try to stay optimistic and turn any negativity the team is experiencing into a positive. I have to stay focused and strong with the team and help them understand that “tough times don’t last long, but tough people do.”

What do you anticipate as one of your biggest challenges this season? When I first got here, I noticed that some of the players were kind of distant. Then I remembered that some of them have had three different coaches since they started. So what we try to do as a staff is develop the bond—before we develop the coaching part. For me, coaching is easy. The challenge is building a relationship with the team. If you can do that, they’ll play a whole lot harder for you.

Of Legends and 1927 HOUSTON COLORED JUNIOR COLLEGE began under the auspices of Houston I.S.D. Classes were held on the campus of Yates High School.

1934

HOUSTON COLLEGE FOR NEGROES was established as a four year, “separate but equal” institution of higher learning.

1949

OLLINGTON SMITH, professor of Speech and English, founded the University Players in 1949. In 1974, a formal degree program was established when the School of Communication was founded - theatre was one of five areas of concentration. Today, performances are held in a theater named in Smith’s honor, the Ollington Smith Playhouse. The Department of Theatre is now part of the College of Liberal Arts and Behavioral Sciences.

1951

Texas State University for Negroes was officially renamed TEXAS SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY. On May 28th, baccalaureate services were held for the first graduating class.

1947

In February of 1946, HEMAN MARION SWEATT, an African American Houston mail carrier, applied to enroll in the law school at the University of Texas. Because Texas was one of the segregated states, Sweatt was denied admission and later filed a suit against the University of Texas and the State of Texas with the support of the NAACP. In response, the Texas Legislature passed Senate Bill 140 on March 3, 1947, providing a state university and law school for African Americans— Texas State University for Negroes.

1948 The University acquired an original collection from Charles Frederick Heartman, a well-known antiquarian book dealer. Today, the HEARTMAN COLLECTION is one of the strongest legacies in the field of AfroAmericana. As the largest African American collection in the Southwest, it contains over 11,000 documents, photographs and ephemera relating to the black experience in the U.S. and the the world.

1960 TSU students began leading lunch counter sit-ins in the name of CIVIL RIGHTS. On February 28, 1961, 12 students were arrested at the Union Coffee Shop for their peaceful demonstrations, unleashing a wave of police retaliation.

1963

JOHN BIGGERS’ landmark painting, “Jubilee: Ghana Harvest Festival”—created between 1959 and 1963—was completed. The work symbolizes Biggers’ artistic breakthrough of this period as well as his profound vision and consummate skill.

1967 TSU Alumna BARBARA JORDAN was sworn in as the first African American state senator in American history since the era of Reconstruction.

Leaders 1969

TSU’s OCEAN OF SOUL marching band was founded

by Benjamin J. Butler II. Today, under the direction of Richard Lee, the award-winning 200-member band marches on. They are celebrated for their drills and dance routines.

1972 MICKEY LELAND, a 1970 graduate of the College of Pharmacy and Health Science was elected to the Texas House of Representatives. Six years later, he took the congressional seat that had been vacated by Barbara Jordan. Leland served three terms until his untimely death. He led a U.S. hunger mission to Ethiopia in August 1989.

1998

The JESSE H. JONES SCHOOL OF BUSINESS (JHJ) was completed. The building initially housed the Department of Accounting and Finance, the Department of Business Administration and the Center for Entrepreneurship and Executive Development. Today, JHJ also offers an eMBA program that allows working professionals to obtain their MBA online.

2008

Dr. John Rudley became the 14th president of TEXAS SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY. His tenure at TSU is chronicled in the recently released, Our Story: A History of Presidents of Texas Southern University.

2011

The TSU Honors College was established on the lower level of the Robert J. Terry Library. Founder of the TSU Debate Team Thomas F. Freeman was named Interim Dean. Also that year, KIRK WHALUM won his first Grammy award in 2011 for Best Gospel Song.

1976

After receiving an award for $3.5 million for the construction of a new building, the Law School was named for Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall. Today, the THURGOOD MARSHALL SCHOOL OF LAW has consistently been ranked as one of the most ethnically diverse law schools in the United States.

1989

Alumna and Grammy-winning gospel recording artist released YOLANDA ADAMS “Just as I Am.” The debut recording, number 8 on the Billboard’s U.S. Gospel charts, was a first of many in Adams’ prolific recording career. She was later named #1 Artist of the Decade by Billboard magazine.

MEET A STUDENT:

Erika Vasquez How a junior art major from Tamaulipas, Mexico strikes the perfect balance between art and athletics.

How do you balance playing for the Women’s Professional Soccer League with being on the Lady Tiger Soccer Team? I spent a month trying out for the WPSL, and I played during their summer season here in Texas. Here on campus, I’m part of the team as a trainer for our goalkeeper.

As an artist, what is your area of focus? My paintings deal mostly with family and immigration policy.

Who inspired you to pursue soccer? My brother. Other members of my family weren’t as encouraging; in Mexico, girls aren’t encouraged to play. It took an hour to drive to a soccer league that I could be a part of. My brother, who I think saw my talent, offered to bring me to the States at age 12. In exchange for working for his family as a babysitter and doing well in school, he agreed to pay for my soccer lessons.

After high school you worked two full-time jobs before coming to TSU. What made you decide to give up a 9-5 in accounting in favor of studying art? I like being around people and also being outdoors. Playing soccer and being an art major allows me to do that. It makes me happy.

Where do you see yourself in the future? I’d like to be a soccer coach, a teacher, and then later on in life, a guidance counselor. Even if it takes many years, I want to keep going.

That’s what life is all about.

But despite the statistics, students of Texas Southern University’s Respiratory Therapy Program (RTP) are actively working to change that.

Robert Bullard

With Justice For All Professor Robert Bullard recently represented the State of Texas in Rio de Janiero at the Rio+20 United States Conference on Sustainable Development. This coming October, he will be featured in the book Everyday Heroes: 50 Americans Changing the World One Nonprofit at a Time (Welcome Books, October 2012). Bullard is the dean of the Barbara Jordan-Mickey Leland School of Public Affairs and is widely-respected as the catalyst of the environmental justice movement.

We’ve Got Spirit!

The TSU Tiger Cheerleaders brought home nine awards from the College Spirit Camp that took place this summer in San Marcos, Texas. In addition to receiving the Game Day Award and all superior ratings, awards were also given in the areas of leadership, fight song and sidelines.

A Man for All Seasons Sophomore Timothy Broadus III was recently featured in Black Enterprise Magazine as part of the TSU 85th Anniversary campaign. In addition to majoring in finance, Broadus is also civic-minded. As an active member of the Collegiate Chapter of 100 Black Men, he is spearheading the chapter’s community garden program, scheduled for spring 2013.

Ya Fatou Njie-Mbye, Ph.D., in her lab.

SEEING IS BELIEVING: Assistant Research Professor Ya Fatou Njie-Mbye of the College of Science and Technology grew up in The Gambia, tagging along with her microbiologist mother in the lab. Today, Njie-Mbye is a research pioneer in her own right. She recently received a grant from the National Institutes of Health to focus on the role of hydrogen sulfide and intra-occular pressure in the treatment of glaucoma. She is working to develop a drug that will treat the condition—the second leading cause of blindness worldwide—without damaging the retina and causing vision loss.

LONDON CALLING: Undergraduate

English major Eric Reyes was one of a select few who participated in the University of Pennsylvania’s Summer Abroad Program in London from June to July 2012. While abroad, Reyes studied the works of George Orwell and Jane Austen.

received a $1,500 scholarship to study at the Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. Reyes’ award was made possible by the Houston Alumni Club of Pi Beta Phi Fraternity for Women, Inc.

Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics has voted to continue full accreditation for the TSU program in Dietetics.

Power Moves How Alumnus DeAndre Sam helps students reach their destinations DeAndre Sam ’95 believes in paying it forward. “Texas Southern is in the heart of our community and we’re grateful for the opportunity to do business with the University,” he says. “It only makes sense to support its students.”

Sam’s family has contributed to TSU for over 50 years, primarily through their company, A-Rocket Relocation & Storage Service.

Independently, he sponsors Corie Phillips, a senior journalism major and honors student through the President’s Leadership Scholarship (PLS). Sam’s support has not only afforded Corie the opportunity to pursue higher education, it has also given her a greater sense of motivation. “Knowing that someone is willing to invest in my potential means the world to me,” she says. “I feel challenged to demonstrate a higher standard of academic achievement.”

Sam’s family business, of which

he is now the second-generation owner, began doing business with the University in the 1960s. Their experience with TSU began with moving the Thurgood Marshall School of Law from Hannah Hall to its permanent building. Today, they transport equipment for the football team’s road games pro bono.

Phillips is very clear about not taking the generosity of her donor for granted.

She says that it is her responsibility as a PLS recipient to maintain a character of leadership and academic excellence. “I work hard towards the benefit of my university and to ensure my advisors that my scholarship was not given in vain.”

These words provide an impetus for alumni like Sam to continue giving. “It’s all about reciprocating,” he says. “When one is given an opportunity, I think it’s only right to give back.”
