Murder suspect arrested for breaking and entering by Leah Justice
After bonding out of jail in Henderson County on murder charges, a Saluda man was arrested by the Polk County Sheriff’s Office last week suspected of breaking and entering a Saluda Township residence. Polk County Sheriff Donald Hill said on Dec. 7 deputies were dispatched to a breaking and entering in progress along Laurel
Drive in Saluda. Upon arrival deputies found Brandon Cody Lee Case and Amanda Maybin on the property. Case, 24, of 709 Laurel Drive, Saluda was arrested and charged with felony breaking and/or entering and felony larceny, according to sheriff reports. Guardian Ad Litem program needs volunteers

Currently there are more than 63 children allegedly abused and neglected in Polk County. Abused and neglected cases often result in the children being placed in foster care where they remain without a voice and may become lost in the child welfare system. Judges depend on testimony and reports from interested parties to inform them on how to protect each child from further harm. The Guardian Ad Litem Program in Polk County, affiliated with the National CASA Association, is a nonprofit organization that trains community volunteers to be the voice for these children. In 1983, the North Carolina Legislature created a statewide program to advocate for abused and neglected children who are involved in court proceedings. A volunteer Guardian Ad Litem and an Attorney Advocate are jointly appointed by a judge.
Their duty is to ensure protections of the child’s legal rights and to promote the best interests of the child. Guardian’s Ad Litem (GAL) are a diverse group of everyday people who care about children’s well being. Most volunteers spend four to six hours per month on the child’s case, which includes learning about the child’s situation, talking to the child, caregivers, professionals and others involved in the child’s life. A GAL must be objective and non-judgmental and be able to interact with people of various educational, economic and ethnic backgrounds. dead at his 2643 Macedonia Road home on Feb. 22 in the Henderson County portion of Saluda. Investigators said they responded to a report that Lindsay died of a selfinflicted gunshot wound but after conflicting statements and evidence collected, Case was charged with the murder. Preliminary autopsy results determined that Lindsay’s death was homicide and that he died as a result of a large-caliber, non-exiting gunshot wound to the face and neck. Hill said Case’s Polk County bond can only be set by a district or superior court judge due to his pending murder charge. Case is currently being held at the Polk County Jail and has his first appearance scheduled in Polk County Court on the breaking and entering and larceny charges on Wednesday, Dec. 12. Maybin was released from jail on a written promise to appear in court, according to sheriff reports.

to the sheriff’s office. Hill said the suspects cut a padlock off an outbuilding and took a generator, worth $700, and an industrial extension cord. Both items were located in a vehicle that was also on the property and belonged to Case’s mother, according to sheriff reports. Case made a $500,000 bond on murder charges in June in Henderson County. Case has been charged with the February murder of Joshua William Lindsay. Case originally received no bond on the murder charge then was given a $500,000 bond in Henderson County in March. Case was released from jail on June 8 after posting a property bond. Doris Card Lee Doris Card Lee, 95, died on November 17, 2012 at Willow Brooke Lane, Tryon Estates, in Columbus. She was born in Bridgeport, Conn., on August 15, 1917, the daughter of the late Frederic Monroe and Lillian Prudence (Courtright) Card. She was predeceased by Wallace Williams Lee, Jr., her husband of 65 years, and her sister, Prudence (Card) Skiff.
She is survived by two children, Doris L. Bessette, of Charlestown, RI, and Frederic W. Lee, and his wife Susan, of New Milford, Conn; four grandchildren, Doris M. Avila of Taunton, MA; Justin W. Lee of Rockville, RI; and Brandon W. Lee and Alden B. Lee, both of New Milford, Conn. She is also survived by five great-grandchildren; Savanna and Kyle Souza of Taunton, Mass.; Collin, Dayton and Colton Lee of Rockville, RI. Mrs. Lee attended the Junior College of Connecticut, and then the New Haven School of
Drama, teaching drama until she was married in 1942. She started painting in 1949, and became an accomplished artist in both oils and watercolors, exhibiting her paintings numerous places. She and her husband resided in New York City for 12 years then Sherman, Conn., for 35 years before moving to Tryon Estates, Columbus in 1997. Mrs. Lee was an active member of the DAR and the P.E.O. She served as a Connecticut State Regent of the DAR, and was the organizer and first president of the PEO group at Tryon

Estates. She ran the Friendly Service group at the Congregational Church in Sherman, Conn. for many years. In North Carolina she was a member of the Tryon Painters and Sculptures group and the Congregational Church, UCC, Tryon. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Donations in her memory may be made to Cottey College, Nevada, MO; AHAF Macular Degeneration Research program; the Alzheimer’s Association; or Hospice of the Carolina Foothills.

Bennett Edwin Hinsdale Jr. Bennett Edwin Hinsdale Jr. 103, died December 7, 2012 at Rose Crest Retirement Center of Inman, S.C. Born April 2, 1909 he was a native and resident of the Green
Creek community of Polk County and was a son of the late Bennett Edwin and Elizabeth Barnett Hinsdale. He was the widower of Gladys Greene Hinsdale, who died in 2000. Mr. Hinsdale was retired from the United States Department of Agriculture as County Office Manager of Farm Service for Polk County. He was a faithful and dedicated worker for his church,
The Mill Creek Church of the Brethren where he was a member, Life Deacon and served as church moderator for 57 years. He loved his community, serving as a former trustee of St. Luke’s Hospital in Tryon and of the Head Memorial Clinic in Green Creek. He was a member of the Green Creek Ruritan Club having obtained 57 years perfect attendance. He also served many years as a member and chairman of the Polk County Board of Education and served countless years as precinct judge and poll worker in general elections. During WWII, he served on the War Board for Polk County. He is survived by one daughter, Elizabeth Summey of Spartanburg; one grandson, Raymie Summey (Lisa) of Spartanburg; and one granddaughter, Amanda Cohen (Brett) of Fort Mill, SC. He is survived by four greatgrandchildren, Ethan and Gabe Summey, and Harrison and Lizzie Cohen. He was predeceased by a grandson, Ben Summey; one brother; and four sisters. He was
the last surviving member of his immediate family. Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Monday, December 10 in the Mill Creek Church of the Brethren with Rev. Steve Abe and Rev. C.C. Kurtz officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Visitation was held Sunday evening, December 9 at McFarland’s Funeral Chapel of Tryon. Donations may be made to the Mill Creek Church of the Brethren, 1401 Coxe Rd. Tryon, N.C. 28782 or to Lutheran Hospice at 429 N. Main St. Suite 3, Greenville, S.C. 29601. Landrum defeats Polk convincingly in second meeting by Fulton Hampton
In what has become an early season tradition, Polk County and Landrum played for the second consecutive Friday night. It is rare in high school basketball for rivals to meet in almost back to back games, but this “home and home series” is always much anticipated. Historically, these very competitive games are sometimes decided by home court advantage, but this was not the case this year with the Cardinals bringing too many weapons for the Wolverines. From the opening tip, Landrum built an early lead resulting in a final score of 92-52. The Cardinals controlled the first quarter ending 22 to 5. At halftime Landrum pushed the score to 32-13 and never looked back. Polk made some adjustments at halftime and came out attacking the basket more, scoring more effectively in the third quarter. Polk also did a good job of limiting the leading scorer from the last game Daniel Bridges to only 6 points. However, the other Cardinals stepped up. Truston Whiteside led Landrum with 21 points, followed by Mark Wilson with 17 points. Wilson once again was strong from behind the three-point line hitting three for the game. Trevor Walker with 12 and Aaron Bryant with 11 rounded out the Landrum players in double figures. For the Wolverines Alec Philpott had 13 points, followed by Ben Stockdale with 8. Anthony Carson had 6 points.

Polk County’s Lady Wolverines were victorious against the Landrum Lady Cardinals in Friday’s home game. They opened the game with strong momentum getting a hand on the opening tip and being quick to put points on the scoreboard. Landrum, meanwhile, showed a slower offense early on, which allowed the Lady Wolverines to finish off the first quarter with a 4-point lead, 15-9. The Wolverines headed into the second quarter with their feet

Polk earned four points during the third quarter, all off foul shots. Landrum managed to gain some ground though, adding seven points to the board. Then, with 20 seconds in the third quarter, the Cardinals sunk a 3-point shot, bringing the score to 38-25 Polk. Landrum certainly picked up their game during the second half

With the score 38-33, Landrum had a technical foul called against them, giving sophomore Kara Overholt the opportunity to sink two free throw shots for the Wolverines. With the break they needed to slow Landrum’s offense, Polk regained their strong lead, adding 10 more total points to the board. Landrum scored a basket within the last few seconds, but Polk won the game, 50-39. The Lady Wolverines are now 3-2 for the season.

TFAC developing directory of performing and visual artists Tryon Fine Arts Center has a call out to artists who are interested in being listed in the new Creative Artists’ Directory to be published locally and available online. Visual artists, musicians, performers, writers and other artists are all invited to become part of this list that will describe their talents and abilities and contact information. The purpose of the directory is to provide schools, businesses and agencies in the greater Tryon and Landrum areas of North and South Carolina with access to local, regional and international teaching artists for hands-on workshops, residencies, interactive performances and mentoring opportunities. Gifts of Magi marks 13 years of making Christmas bright Landrum Presbyterian Church minister Jane Culpepper started Gifts of the Magi in 1999 after seeing a serious need to help the children of Landrum, especially at Christmas time. Culpepper soon approached the Board of Operation Hope, and along with other church leaders, they devised a plan to reach out to families who didn’t have the means to make their children’s Christmas wishes come true. The group then approached O.P. Earle Guidance Counselor Susan Henderson to coordinate an annual gift program. O.P. Earle Principal Brian Murray said, “We are the conduit to the community of Landrum with the Magi program. It’s a partnership with everyone.” Starting in October Henderson sends a letter to parents asking for participation from those in need. The parents then send back information on gender, age and size, as well as their child’s present wish list. “Privacy is of utmost importance,” said Jane Ludwick, a volunteer from Landrum Presbyterian Church. Each child is assigned a gold Magi star with his or her information, never a name, provided. Participating local church’s then request stars and sign up sheets are placed in each church. Every child will receive two bags – one of clothing the other presents – placed unwrapped in gift bags with the Magi star attached. “This year 128 children will have gifts on Christmas,” said Ludwick.

Ludwick has volunteered for the Gifts of Magi for many years. Each church has its own coordinator, then the gifts are sent to one church for distribution. It takes a final three days to get everything organized. On gift giving day, parents arrive from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. with church volunteers welcoming them one at a time. Ludwick said every parent is “very grateful.” “I can’t put into words how we feel,” Ludwick said of the effort put in by volunteers. “Tired; at times it’s exhausting but these kids are going to get Christmas.”

Tryon Fine Arts Center will present Do-it-Yourself Messiah on Thursday, Dec. 13 at 7:30 p.m. American composer, singer, author and Tryon resident Dr. Mark Schweizer will conduct portions of Handel’s masterpiece for the enjoyment of singers and non-singers alike in the community. Dr. Schweizer, locally beloved as conductor of the Community Chorus, has taught in colleges and universities. He has founded, directed and performed in regional opera companies across the country, in solo recital, and in oratorio including appearing as the bass soloist with Robert Shaw and the Atlanta Symphony in Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony. Schweizer currently lives in Tryon where he serves as director of St. James Music Press.
