Dr. Hooker wins depot lot with $20k bid by Leah Justice

Dr. John Hooker was the highest bidder with a $20,000 offer on a lot near the Tryon depot during a sealed bid opening last week. Hooker bid $20,000 to win over Bill Crowell’s $19,100 bid.

There were no other offers on the property. Hooker approached the town last year with interest in constructing a new building for his dental office on the 0.47-acre lot. He originally made an $8,000

offer on the lot. The town announced the offer in November 2011 and subsequently received two upset bids. Council decided to reject all bids at that time and (Continued on page 4)

duced 68 pieces, including two made of metal. All the artists took different approaches to adorning the surface of their pieces, with results ranging from whimsical and playful to thoughtful and spiritual. The Have a Heart project opened on Jan. 27 with a crowd at the Upstairs for the gallery’s first show of 2012: “The Fine Art Ramblers and The Innovative Camera.” Bidding on the hearts began that night, and the Upstairs staff reports that a steady stream of visitors has continued to come by to check on the status of “their” hearts. The original intention of the show was to have the hearts available as Valentine gifts. So any hearts that at least reach their minimum bid will be available to the winner on Feb.

On Saturday, Feb. 11, there will be an open house for the “Have a Heart” show from 4-6 p.m. at the Upstairs Artspace. Bids will be accepted through last call at 5:30 p.m. that day. Payments by cash and check will be accepted. Light refresh-

Landrum approves $66,000 design for depot meeting space by Samantha Hurst

Landrum City Council members met in a special called meeting Thursday, Feb. 2 to discuss design options for the depot. During that meeting, members unanimously voted to move forward with a $66,250 design option for the interior meeting space of the depot. City Administrator Steve Wolochowicz said the council had three options to choose from and felt, though more expensive, the third option would carry the depot better into the future. “The council did decide to proceed with the more expensive route that would open up the space in the meeting portion of the depot,” Wolochowicz said. “I think they figured this was their one shot to give the building a deserving renovation. This building will be around for generations after the upgrade, so I think they felt it was better to do it right.”

offer the property by sealed bids. The bids were opened during a special meeting Tuesday, Jan. 31. Tryon Town Council decided to place conditions on the sale of the property, which include that within 120 days of the sale of the property the buyer must obtain zoning and building permits to construct a stick building with a minimum of 1,800 square feet and must obtain a certificate of occupancy within two years. Hooker indicated to town officials last year that he is ready to

will really, really look nice.” This is just another of a handful of steps Landrum must take before breaking ground on the depot renovations later this year. Wolochowicz said the city is still waiting for cooperation from Norfolk Southern on whether the circular pergola could encroach about 13 feet toward the edge of the track. Wolochowicz said he believes the best they may be able to get is 25 feet from the centerline of the railroad. He said if this is the case the design would have to be modified somewhat but hopefully could maintain the general feel council members are hoping to achieve. Council’s March meeting, meanwhile, would be the first reading for an issuance of bonds needed to pay for the renovations. A public hearing to discuss the bonds will be held in April. By early summer the project is expected to go out for bids. proceed with construction and has already submitted plans for the building informally to the town. The sealed bid process came after Crowell told town council he placed an upset bid because he felt with the location the land was being given for free at $8,000. The lot was appraised at $17,000. The property is approximately 0.47 acres and lies off the depot parking lot. The property is bordered on the north by the railroad track and is 225 feet long and just under 100 feet wide. The sealed bid process is final, with no other opportunities to place upset bids.

Benefit for Britton family Feb. 11 features live music, shrimp, more A benefit for Chuck Britton on Feb. 11 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. will feature all-day live music, a half pound of shrimp, BBQ plate and/or hot dogs and hamburgers, along with sides. The benefit will be held at the Tryon Depot’s large deck and parking area. Performers will include Speedwell, Chuck and Norm, Project X and Winky and Red Dog. Britton, one of the area’s longtime and well-respected local residents, suffered a heart attack while on Christmas vacation with his family in Florida. He has had to undergo several operations, was in the hospital for two weeks and may need another procedure. His business, C & E Home Improvements, has been on hold since this happened. Close friends of Britton’s, including the staff, board and volunteers of the local chamber of commerce and many other local merchants, have put together this event to help defray the cost of the family’s medical bills. Britton has been involved with the chamber for at least 19 years,

has been a competition BBQ cooker in every single festival, is now on the board of directors at the chamber and in his second year as chairman of the BBQ festival. In addition to the shrimp, BBQ and other foods, beer, wine and other beverages will be available for purchase. Local merchants have donated some of the food items. Take-out will be available. There will also be a silent auction. If you are interested in donating an item or two for this auction, call Tabatha Cantrell at 828-817-2503. Donations can also be dropped off at the chamber office. Tickets can be purchased at the Trade St. Coffee Gallery, Kathleen’s, Tryon Mountain Hardware and the chamber. An account at TD Bank has been opened just for this benefit. If you are unable to attend, you can make a donation directly at the bank, payable to “Benefit for Chuck Britton.” – article submitted by Janet Sciacca

Cardinals win second consecutive region championship by Joey Millwood

Landrum announcer Hambone Camp’s voice boomed over the speakers on Friday night. He’d call out the name as a different Cardinal ascended a ladder to cut down a piece of history. The Cardinals were cutting off a piece of net that symbolized their second consecutive Region II-1A Championship. This was the first time in Cardinal basketball history that this had been accomplished. Landrum beat St. Joseph’s 60-43 – dominating from start to finish – to accomplish the historic feat. “It’s a testament to all the hard work the kids put in,” Cardinal head coach Lyn Smith said. “It’s good to see that hard work pay off.” This one was never in doubt. The Cardinals jumped out to a big 17-9 first quarter lead with junior Mark Wilson hitting two three-pointers to spark Landrum.

In the second quarter, the Landrum defense began firing on all cylinders. The Knights scored their first field goal with 3:01 left in the half and that would be the only field goal of the quarter. The run began with a Daniel Bridges steal. Three possessions later, Bridges got another steal and this time he slammed it home on the other end to the delight of the Cardinal fans. Bridges finished the second quarter by drawing a charge on the defensive end and then hitting a three-pointer on the offensive end. Bridges finished with a game-high 20 points. The Cardinals outscored the Knights 17-3 in the second quarter. One Cardinal that is turning it on this season is Truston Whiteside. The junior attacked the basket Friday night, scoring 13 points. “We just tried to come out here and play as hard as we can,” junior guard Whiteside said. By the end of the third quarter, the Cardinals had built a 48-20

lead. The Knights battled back towards the end of the game with a 19-0 run in the final minutes. Tyler Laghese led the way for the

Knights with 14 points. The Cardinals have two more region games next week at Christ Church and Greer Middle College.

PCHS Wolverine men victorious on Senior Night, 70 - 63 by William Trakas

Ah, senior night… As each member of the class of 2012 was introduced and strolled into the gym to find their place at mid-court, a grateful (and packed) crowd applauded. An emotional evening, always, the upperclassmen of Polk County High School wanted to leave the gym for the last time on a note worthy of some illustrious basketball careers. The Wolverine men did just

that coming off a hard fought victory at Thomas Jefferson. In a bout with Western Highland Conference foe Owen, the men in blue and white came out resilient, but sloppy. Both teams missed many shots and had countless turnovers in the early going. Offenses seemed stagnant until the Wolverines found some sort of offensive rhythm with a small run that propelled them to a 2-point lead after a tight first quarter.

The equally sloppy and fast second quarter was a period of runs as a Wolverine 9-2 run late in the quarter put them up 34-26. Just as the momentum seemed to swing in favor of the home bench, the Warhorses answered with an 8-0 run of their own to tie the game. Just before the halftime buzzer, sophomore guard Reece Schlabach hit two free throws to give the Wolverines a 2-point lead

going into the half. Fast-forward to the fourth, and the men from Polk enjoyed a 52-45 lead following a 9-2 run. But, like they did all night, the Warhorses from Owen answered with a run of their own fueled by Wolverine turnovers. With 3:52 left, the Warhorses took their first lead since the beginning of the third quarter. (Continued on page 11)

As the numbers on the scoreboard continued to dwindle down, the game reached an exciting climax as teams traded baskets with under two minutes left. Then Wolverine senior forward/guard Joel Booker found sophomore Anthony Carson underneath the basket in transition to put Polk up by two. Booker’s assist was his career-high 13th of the game and Carson’s lay-up gave him a game-high 20 points. Clutch free throw shooting took care of the rest as the Wolverines improved their record to 14-9 (8-5) with a 70-63 win. After the game, coach Josh

McEntire was happy with the win, but said he knows his team will have to look better Feb. 7 when they face off for the second time with an undefeated Hendersonville squad. “We made a lot of uncharacteristic mistakes tonight and didn’t have a great shooting night, but we played hard down the stretch and that turned out to be enough,” McEntire said. “We made good coaching adjustments on screens there in the second half.” Coach “Mac” also discussed potential seeding in the state tournament. “Well right now we are looking at a No. 5-8 seed, which would ensure us a home game. But if we win next week and (Mountain) Heritage looses, we

would grab a No. 1-4 seed, which is two home games.” Either way it works out for the Wolverines. A month ago, this team sat at 8-8 after loosing a tough game to Hendersonville. Now, after winning six of their last seven, the Wolverines head into Tuesday’s showdown with the Bearcats a completely new team. Carson, the game’s leading scorer, commented on the matchup against Hendersonville. “We just have to run the court, run the court all night. And make our lay-ups. This team is undefeated, but very beatable,” Carson said. The seniors showed up big on their night in glory as well. Booker completed the rare tri-

ple-double with 10 points, 11 rebounds and 13 assists. Markece Cunningham also added 10 points. Sam Vining had nine in a solid effort and Akeem Anderson and Dylan Jones added solid minutes early, as well as some fourth quarter minutes for the rebounding-specialist, Anderson. All five seniors saw playing time on a night that honored them. Lady Wolverines In the women’s match up, the Lady Wolverines scrapped and clawed in a hard-fought first half, only to see the game get away from them in the third. It was a solid effort that saw an impressive comeback in the fourth, but unfortunately, the girls still fell, 53-41.

Landrum teacher named Regional Distinguished Reading Teacher Jackie Putnam, English language arts teacher at Landrum Middle School, has been recognized as the Regional Distinguished Reading Teacher of the Year by the Spartanburg Council of the International Reading Association. Putnam is also the Distinguished Reading Teacher of the Year for Landrum Middle School and District One Schools. “We are very proud to have a regional winner. Mrs. Putnam is an educator who is dedicated to her students and helping them reach their full potential,” said Ann Greene, assistant superintendent of curriculum for District One. “My belief is that the teaching of reading needs to include a balance of reading, writing, speaking and listening activities and needs to provide a variety of instructional strategies to meet the needs of all learners,” said Putnam. “I believe that learning to read depends on two critical factors: the teacher’s thorough understanding of the reading process itself, and his or her determination to understand and respond to each student’s needs as a reader. I feel that there needs to be a consolidation of the student’s prior knowledge and experience (text-to-self, text-to-text, and text-to-world connections). By addressing student’s interest, past experiences, culture, and background knowledge, the greater their interest and comprehension will be and their motivation to read and write will also grow. “I believe that teachers must scaffold student learning to ensure that they are learning on a level that is challenging enough, but not too difficult. Students should be taught phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency and writing,” she said. Putnam said she also believes in the whole language approach to reading instruction and that emphasis should be placed on a high-quality collection of authentic texts in reading and writing. “It is necessary to arm the students with a collection of strategies to figure out unfamiliar words and monitor their reading,” Putnam

said. “Students should be given extended opportunities to read and have ownership in the selection of their books. They need to spend time talking with others and writing about their reactions to and feelings about the texts. I also believe that teachers need to be reflective in their practices, stay current in best practices and continually assess what is working and what is not working. I try to model, and think aloud, what proficient readers do when they read in order for my students to see the process. It is my belief that if I teach reading with passion and enthusiasm, my students will mirror that passion and enthusiasm in their reading.” Putnam has been teaching in Spartanburg County for 28 years. She received her B.A. in elementary education and her master’s plus 30 from Converse College in Spartanburg. - article submitted by Paula Brooks

Preparing your spring garden workshop Ag Center hosts workshop Feb 11, 18 If your next two Saturdays are open, and you want to get help planning for spring planting, the upcoming local sustainable farming and gardening workshop may be for you. Leap Farm and Thunder Ridge Farm of Polk County with Lee Mink and Lynn Ronzello, will teach a high-yield system of growing on any size plot in a workshop that includes the following: bed making, composting, soil amendments, soil blocks, what and when to plant, irrigation, row covers, seed saving and much more. The workshop will be held Saturday, Feb. 11 and Saturday, Feb. 18 from 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Half of the time will be spent in the classroom at the Mill Spring Ag Center and half will be field time spent at Leap Farm at Bright’s Creek. The class includes binder workbooks, individualized instruction, local foods lunches, refreshments and a gift bag. Ronzello grew up tending her mother’s urban garden in the heart of Detroit, Mich. “My family was urban ‘truck farmers,’ as they called it,” Ronzello said. “We grew to eat, not necessarily to market.” Once a mother in Lansing, Mich., Ronzello’s aim was to grow to provide healthy food for her family, including all her own baby food. Organic was the only method used in those early days, prior to pesticides like DDT and Round Up-ready inputs and seeds. Then, 17 years ago, Ronzello and her family purchased 23 acres in Green Creek, now called Thunder Ridge Farm, where soil blocks, companion planting, soil health and row cover are part of her marks for success. She said she accepts sacrifice and learning what works and when is learned through her experience. “Last year I just had to accept that I wasn’t going to get much of anything in the way of squash,” Ronzello said during a tour of

You must learn the basics from experienced growers and then tend your land based on what it reveals it needs and can yield for you. As my children have always been a part of tending the farm, be it the gardens, horses or other animals, it’s my daughter that I’ve
