about 15 miles north of Spartanburg. Le Vine was driving a 2007 Audi when she went off the right side of the interstate and struck trees. Le Vine, a senior psychology major at USC Upstate, was reportedly on her way home to Tryon after spending time with friends Friday evening. Le Vine was the daughter of Elena Le Vine of Tryon. Elena Le Vine told USC Upstate officials that authorities indicate her daughter fell asleep at the wheel. Friends describe Le Vine as a good friend who was committed to helping others. Facebook posts include from her friends that the University “lost a shining star,” “an amazing person,” who “always had a smile on her face.” Le Vine was born in Evanston, Ill., and lived there with her parents until moving to Tryon when Le Vine was 12. When she was 13, her father was diagnosed with a brain tumor and died. Family members say Le Vine wanted to use her pyschology degree to work in counseling and with hurt and abused children as she was committed to turning her own personal tragedy of losing her father into help for others. While in Tryon, Le Vine developed a love for horses and riding. She became a winning

dressage rider and loved animals, friends and family say. Le Vine was on the homecoming court at Polk County High School all four years she attended the school. While attending USC Upstate, Le Vine worked at the Outback Steakhouse in Spartanburg for years before recently starting a new job at the Carolina Cafe in Gaffney, S.C. Investigators say Le Vine was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident. The investigation into the cause of the accident is continuing with further examinations and toxicology testing. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, October 2, 2010 in the McFarland Funeral Chapel in Tryon. Family will receive friends from 12:30 to 2 p.m. just prior to the service.

Landrum High has continued to grow thanks in part to the location of the six-year-old campus on Highway 176 between Landrum and Campobello. “The Landrum community in general has grown, but also more children at Campobello (Junior High) are choosing to go to Landrum,” Goodwin said. While Landrum has moved closer to the Campobello area, Chapman in Inman has moved a little further away with its new campus. Goodwin also said that former home-schooled and private-school students have enrolled at LHS over the past couple of years. “I think because it is still a small campus, (LHS) is closer to what they were getting in the private-school sector,” he said.

The Town of Tryon has appointed fire chief Joey Davis as the town's building inspector, health officer, zoning administrator and code enforcement officer. Davis will take on zoning administrator and code enforcer duties. He will also handle building inspections for the purposes of investigating abandoned motor vehicles and will serve as health inspector for purposes of enforcing the town’s nuisance ordinance. Tryon Town Council made the official appointment during a meeting last week. Tryon Town Manager Justin Hembree, who has a degree in planning, will assist in zoning duties. Davis was appointed zoning administrator following the resignation of Melanie Sand, who formerly served as planner for

Both towns have decided to transfer those duties to other town employees in an effort to save money. Columbus directed those duties to town manager Jonathan Kanipe. Davis already does fire inspections in Tryon and Hembree says the transition to other duties has worked1x2 out well so far. “Most importantly, we’re able to provide a good level of service,” Hembree told council last week. Hembree and Davis said by moving the services more in house the town is able to respond to issues more quickly because staff is available Monday through Friday on a full-time basis.

Cardinals rout Red Devils, 56-14 by John Clayton

Polk County’s ryan Thomas (10) picks up a fumble and returns it 15 yards for a score late in the first half against madison Friday night. PCHS won 43-14. (staff photo by Fulton Hampton)

PCHS tops Madison by John Clayton

When it was over, polk County High school head coach Bruce ollis had exactly what he wanted. “I told the team I wanted to be in first place in the conference at the end of the night,” ollis said after the Wolverines opened the Western Highlands Conference 2a season with a 43-14 victory at Madison Friday night. Mission accomplished. pCHs, the last of the conference’s unbeaten teams at 5-0, overcame a dozen penalties, two of which negated touchdowns by quarterback andre overholt – a punt return and a long run – and three turnovers en route to the win. “I like the fact that we were able to keep our composure,” said ollis. “I thought the defense played well – we don’t want to give up a score, but they were able to tack on one late.” pCHs quarterback andre overholt recorded 94 yards rushing on 14 carries and threw for 131 yards and a touchdown

on 6 of 12 passing with three interceptions. But tyler ridings and Cody orick put the Wolverines on the scoreboard with two rushing touchdowns apiece. ridings opened the game with a 50-yard touchdown romp on the Wolverines’ first play from scrimmage and overholt’s run put pCHs ahead 8-0. Madison (3-2 overall, 0-1 conference) answered with a methodical drive capped by Brandon Henderson’s 1-yard plunge and subsequent 2-point conversion, tying the game at 8-8. From there, pCHs (5-0, 1-0) steadily pulled away, scoring 35 unanswered points. ridings added a 7-yard run as part of a 21-point second quarter that also included the first of two touchdown runs from orick and a 15-yard fumble return for a score by senior defensive back ryan thomas. trey Couch caught a 15-yard scoring pass from overholt to wrap up the scoring for pCHs in the fourth quarter.

any concerns about Landrum’s once-struggling offense have been put to rest in a big way. the Cardinals eclipsed the 50-point barrier for the secondstraight game, rolling to a 56-14 win Friday night at Class 2a Liberty. LHs (3-2) has scored 110 point in its past two contests, which also included a 54-21 win over Dixie a week earlier. the game turned into a track meet early on as the two teams combined for 35 first-quarter points, but LHs held on to a 2114 lead after the opening quarter and was able to sustain that rapidfire pace throughout the first half. the Cardinals extended that lead to 42-14 by intermission behind the arm and legs of junior quarterback Brandon Cannon. Cannon threw for three touchdowns and ran for two others – all in the first half. receiver David Hefner scored on a 50-yard touchdown pass from Cannon and halfback Cole McDowell had a 41-yard touchdown reception in the first quarter. McDowell, who finished with 135 yards rushing on 13 attempts, added an 11-yard touchdown run to close the first-quarter shootout and put LHs ahead for good. Cannon added second-quarter touchdown runs of 1 and 13 yards and also connected on a 61-yard touchdown pass to senior wideout austin Brown as LHs pulled away in the second quarter. tyler Logan began the second half with a 76-yard kickoff return for a touchdown and fullback Derek Belue closed the scoring with a 1-yard plunge in the fourth

quarter. Cannon finished with 72 yard rushing on eight attempts and 229 yards on 9 of 11 passing. the red Devils (0-5) managed 240 yards rushing, including 100 yards on 12 carries from wing-t quarterback Brandon alexander, who opened the scoring with a 60-yard touchdown scamper. the Cardinals were able to take advantage of three LHs turnovers, including a pair of interceptions. LHs opens its region II-a schedule this Friday night at Whitmire. Game notes: Landrum p/K/ Wr stephen Doar hit all eight of his extra-point tries and punted once for 42 yards against Liberty. . . . the Cardinals will face a winless team for the second-straight week when they travel to Whitmire (0-5).

More thoughts about kudzu

A few weeks ago I was telling a man from Alabama that we are making a conscientious effort to kill kudzu all around our area, with a few specific spots of concentration. His response was “Good luck, but I’m afraid that you are wasting your time. I’m from Alabama and we have lots of kudzu everywhere. In fact, we sort of like the kudzu because it covers all the old junk cars and shacks along the roads.” Since I’ve been through Alabama many times, I know that what he says is true; but the comment has been nagging at me for some reason. It stuck with me for the very reason that it is true, sadly true. Kudzu kills whatever is beneath it by taking all the sunlight and robbing whatever is beneath of sunlight and energy. We could either say that it smothers the trees or whatever it covers, but it would be more accurate to say that it robs the tree of its energy source, the sun. If you think about it, one of the main reasons why kudzu has gotten so out of control is because it has been happily growing in marginal areas that no one cares about such as roadsides, steep banks (downward and out of sight), behind commercial buildings, and trashy areas that look better covered with kudzu because of the ugly trash beneath. One of the areas that I personally have been working on is the poorest neighborhood (now abandoned) near the old Saluda dump. The

It’s a big problem for everyone now, and it keeps growing 6 to 12 inches a day, onwards and upwards. For me, kudzu is an example of how we tend to ignore ugliness and unpleasantness as long as it has a pretty cover on it: out of sight; out of mind. It is just one of the many environmental problems that we have been able to ignore because it is in someone else’s yard, and it is his problem and he should be the one
