GUJARAT TRADITION AND LIFESTYLE:

GUJARATI WEDDING CEREMONY: The wedding in the state of Gujarat is full of traditional and symbolic rituals and customs. The Gujarati community reflects an unbounded enthusiasm in the area of marriage. The wedding rituals of the Gujarati people are filled with joy, fun and full of vibrant colors. The weddings in Gujarat have pre wedding functions, wedding function and post wedding functions. All relatives and friends are gathered and celebration is done with great enthusiasm. There is recitation of various Sanskrit versus and traditional sings. According to the Vedas, the Hindu scriptures, marriage is a holy lifelong commitment and relation between a man and a woman. It is considered to be the mightiest of all the social bonds and is the initiation into a lifetime of togetherness. The Vedic wedding consists of prayers, enchantment, and vows recited in Sanskrit, the most ancient language surviving till date. The ceremony is performed under a decorated canopy, the Mandap. The ceremony is performed before the sacred fire, which is the everlasting witness of the marriage and all vows taken. GUJARATI DANCE:

Dandiya raas: It is a very colorful, energetic and playful dance originating in the state of Gujarat. It started from the roots laid from the days of Lord Krishna who played Raas on the shores of Yamuna River on a moonlight night with his beloved Gopis. People are dressed in colorful clothes dance in two concentric circles. Men and women carry two bamboo sticks called Dandiyas in their


hands. In addition to footsteps, it is one of the most enjoyable parts of this dance is the creative use of dandiyas. The song played or sung on the occasion is essentially an amorous one. Garba: Garba is a very graceful form of dance mainly performed by females in a circular formation; it is in reverence of goddess Ambaji. The basis of dance are singing and clapping rhythmically while going around the goddess. Women are dressed in exquisitely embroidered, set in mirror cholis, ghaghras and bandhani dupattas. Wide ranging jewelry in the form of necklaces, bracelets and anklets are also worn. Typical dresscode for men is kehediyu, chuddidar and a turban. Bhavai: It is exclusively performed by male members in various costumes and character forms. A long wide brass instrument called ‘bhugal’ is played during the performance to call performing characters to the scene. Drums, cymbals and Sarangi are other few instruments made use of. Bhavai is mostly held in open space. Bhavai has gained popularity with change of time as medium of entertainment. It is kind of ritual offering made to goddess Amba.
