Keeping Your New Year’s Resolution The New Year is quickly creeping up on us. Do you have a New Year’s Resolution? Well, if you’re like most Americans (88 percent in 2007 according to a General Nutrition Centers poll), you have at least one resolution. And, if you are like the majority of these promise-makers, your resolution is probably related to health and fitness. In 2007 (according to GNC), 55 percent promised to eat healthier, 50 percent resolved to exercise more, and 38 percent wanted to lose weight. While resolutions are well-intentioned, unfortunately most people fail at keeping them. With all the hype surrounding these promises, it’s easy to get caught up in them without really taking them seriously. We live in a throw-away society and even our resolutions, I’m afraid, are not immune. However, especially for promises that include improving our health it’s in our best interest to not take them lightly. So, what’s the secret to successful resolutions? While you can’t wave a magic wand and make your resolution come true, there are some easy steps to take to make it easier to fulfill your promise to yourself. • Choose an obtainable goal. Resolving to look like a super model is not realistic for the majority of us, but promising to include daily physical activity in our lives is very possible. • Avoid choosing a resolution that you’ve been unsuccessful at achieving year after year. This will only set you up for failure, frustration and disappointment. If you are still tempted to make a promise that you’ve made before, then try altering it. For example, instead of stating that you are going to lose 30 pounds, try promising to eat healthier and increase your weekly exercise. • Create a game plan. At the beginning of January, write a comprehensive plan. All successful businesses start with a business plan that describes their mission and specifics on how they will achieve it. Write your own personal plan and you’ll be more likely to succeed as well. • Break it down and make it less intimidating. Rather than one BIG end goal, dissect it into smaller pieces. Set several smaller goals to achieve throughout the year that will help you to reach the ultimate goal. Then even if you aren’t able to reach your final goal, you will have many smaller, but still significant, achievements along the way. For example, if your goal is to complete a 10K race, your smaller goals could be running a 5K in less than 30 minutes, adding upper and lower body strength training to increase your muscular endurance, and running 2 miles with a personal best completion time. • Ask friends and family members to help you so you have someone to be accountable to. Just be sure to set limits so that this doesn’t backfire and become more irritating than helpful. For example, if you resolve to be more positive ask them to gently remind you when you start talking negatively.

Reward yourself with each milestone. If you’ve stuck with your resolution for two months, treat yourself to something special. But, be careful of your reward type. If you’ve lost 5 pounds, don’t give yourself a piece of cake as an award. Instead, treat yourself to a something non-food related, like a professional massage. • Don’t go it alone! Get professional assistance. Everyone needs help and sometimes a friend just isn’t enough. Sometimes you need the help of a trained professional. Don’t feel that seeking help is a way of copping out. Especially when it comes to fitness, research studies have shown that assistance from a fitness professional greatly improves peoples success rate. • Limit your number of promises. You’ll spread yourself too thin trying to make multiple changes in your life. This will just lead to failure of all of the resolutions. On average only about 20% of us keep our New Year’s resolutions. Unfortunately, some of the biggest failures are found in fitness resolutions. But don’t let the statistics get you down. Small City with Small City Dreams Most small cities has big city dreams, but that is not the case with Erie, Pennsylvania. Truflava Magazine visited Erie in April looking for aspiring models and talent, but all we found was wannabes who proclaim to be the best in Erie. I guess we really counldn’t judge because no one showed-up for our event, dispite the mass advertising we did. We have traveled to cities all around the country, including towns smaller than Erie, and we have received unbelievable outcomes. For many decades Cleveland, Ohio was considered to be the mistake on the lake, but the real mistake sits in a neighboring state about 100 miles away in Northwest Pennsylvania. Some can argue we are judging Erie unfairly, and that may be somewhat true considering our event was held at an predominately black night club. Perhaps if we would’ve held the event in the downtown area that was more accessible to all races, the turnout could have been better. We were actually told by a few people that Saturday would have been a better day to come to Erie. Just a little advice for the People of Erie or anyone else, when opportunity comes to your area, any day and time is a good day and time. Truflava Magazine don’t want to trash the entire City of Erie, because we did meet a hand full of really great people. Like Renley, the owner of the Metroplex, the venue where our event was held. Renley and the staff at Metroplex are good people in a really bad city. If this club (the Metroplex) was in any other city, it would be a major attraction, but the only decent night this club has is Saturday, which is ashame for a city with not much to do or offer. We also met a few great people at a local radio station WERG 90.5 FM. Radio personality Mike West and Super Soul Saturday’s Producer Lee Smith, both showed Truflava Magazine much love. Probably the most special person we met in Erie was DJ Nilla of WERG 90.5 FM. This beautiful and sexy multi-talented aspiring entertainment performed for us and set the stage on fire. Her hard but smooth lyrics captures you and takes you where she wants you go. DJ Nilla was also the host for the evening, and was very instrumental in promoting the event. Look for DJ Nilla in an upcoming issue of Truflava Magazine. i

For any lover of music - whether it is rock and roll, hip hop, or country, or anything else under the sun, the spring and summer concert schedule of 2008 is set to blow your mind and give you a chance to see many different acts out there on the road. No matter where you live or where you’d like to travel to see shows, you’ll be able to find plenty of great spring and summer concerts, and you’ll be able to end the summer knowing you’ve seen the best that the music industry has to offer. Rock Fans. No matter what time period of rock you are a fan of, you’ll be able to find something to delight you this summer. Rod Stewart is on tour this spring and summer, and will most definitely be coming to a tour destination near you. His tour begins in California in July and goes through the end of August. The Police kick off an exciting and spectacular series of shows. They begin in Ontario on May 1st, 2008 and their shows run through the end of August. The Cure is also on tour, beginning in May and running through June 2008. So is Celine Dion. She starts her tour in the UK on May 2nd, and tours there for the majority of the summer. On August 15th, she begins the North American leg of the tour with two nights in Boston. Bon Jovi starts a tour in the US at the end of April, and is in the United States through the end of May. Starting in June, he will continue to tour in the UK for several dates. Kanye West starts his tour at the end of April, in Los Angeles, and ends in Los Angeles again in June. Jay-Z and Mary J Blige are touring together in April and May. There are several tour dates listed for them, promoting Jay-Z’s new album. Country Music Fans, Kenny Chesney and LeAnn Rimes tour this summer a well, with the Pirates and Poets Tour, starting in May and going on for most of the summer. Toby Keith, Tim McGraw, and Sugarland all have separate concert tours that are beginning in the spring and going through the summer months, across North American, mostly in the United States. Rascal Flatts begins a tour in May, and has dates that run through October, all in North America. JUNE 2008

Recently, she did advertising work for Triworld Entertainment. Our congratulations! TRUFLAVA: About the photos you submitted to Dream Model Search, I think you like photos made outdoor?
ASHLEE: “I like it better because it’s easier to change the location to suit the shoot.” TRUFLAVA: I’ve heard the weather was extremely cold in Canada, can you tell about it?
ASHLEE: “Yes it were extremely cold for me, Tennessee weather doesn’t really get that cold. The temperature being around 15 degrees and close to the water made it a lot colder. I was shaking and unable to move some of joints. My body was starting to go blue, which thankfully didn’t show up in the photos.” TRUFLAVA: Tell us where you were that time? On the lake?
ASHLEE: “I was at an winery in Montreal near a harbor at that time. Near the lake.” TRUFLAVA: What kind of style of modeling do you like?
ASHLEE: “I don’t have a preferable style of modeling; I like all of what I have done so far, and on my hopes to pursue glamour and editorial too, leave my ranges wide.” TRUFLAVA: I heard recently you have a job for a CD cover?
ASHLEE: “I had tried getting with an agency but after not getting with any I realized that I should try looking for jobs and try increase my exposure. I started making adverts and other online portfolios to try and get some, eventually I got a hit and they liked my style. They asked me would I do a cd cover, which eventually developed into a bit of other work, they asked for maybe behind the cd, or a cd insert for the next one. Or maybe the next one might feature me on the cover. The producer and group were in California, which meant I had to get a photographer and send the images to them. They said that I would have to pose near or beside the group logo. They sent me a t-shirt and the photo release form. The images were going to be used by a GFX artist too cut me out of the background and onto a black one with the logo.”That sounds very interesting, we wish you all the best and our congratulations! 30

She earned roles in such productions as Neil Simon’s “Fools,” and the clic “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.” Marcil received critical acclaim for her performance in the stage production “Southern Rapture,” starring country singer/actor Dwight Yoakum and Golden Globe winner Sally Kirkland. Making her television debut on the daytime drama “General Hospital,” Marcil recently won a Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress and garnered several nominations for Outstanding Lead Actress and Hottest Female Star. After her six-year run on the daytime series, Marcil ventured into primetime television appearing as a series regular on “Beverly Hills, 90210.” Her other television credits include guest-starring roles on “NYPD Blue,” “High Incident” and “Spin City,” as well as starring in the TV movie “To Love, Honor and Deceive.” Marcil made her feature-film debut in the blockbuster “The Rock,” starring alongside Nicolas Cage and Sean Connery. Her other feature credits include the independent films “The Space Between Us” and “Nice Guys Sleep Alone” with Sean O’Bryan. Along with her work on screen, Marcil works closely with Sojourn Services for Battered Women and Their Children, as well as with programs listing those who have been affected by drug and alcohol abuse. Vanessa Marcil, née Vanessa Ortiz, was born in Indio, Ca, on October 15, 1969 and named in honor of actress Vanessa Redgrave. In her family, her father Peter is a contractor; her mother Patricia is a herbalist; she also has two older sisters, Tina and Sherry; and an older brother named Sam. She is of Mexican, French, Italian and Portuguese descent. Her father, Peter, is Mexican. Her mother, Patricia, is French, Italian and Portuguese. The youngest of four children, Marcil moved with the rest of her family to Anchorage, Alaska. By age 8, Marcil began acting in a local theater in Palm Desert, after she and her family returned to California. Although she was acting at an early age, Marcil studied law after graduating from high school. She finally decided to pursue a career in acting and took her theatrical talents to the stage in performances such as Neil Simon’s Fools, Pygmalion, The Miracle Worker, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Southern Rapture, co-starring country music singer Dwight
Yoakam and actress Sally Kirkland, and under the direction of Peter Fonda, and Sweet Bird of Youth, to name a few. In 1989, Vanessa married actor Corey Feldman. The two later divorced in 1991. In 1992, Vanessa became widely known as Brenda Barrett, the character she portrayed on the popular ABC daytime soap, General Hospital. Her stint as Brenda Barrett lasted six consecutive years (she later returned in 2000, 2002 & 2003) and was her first recurring role as an actress. She received a Hottest Female Star Award at the 1997 Soap Opera Digest Awards, Daytime Emmy nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actress in 1997 & ‘98, and a Soap Opera Digest Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in 1998. While working on General Hospital, Vanessa kept busy with other projects. Fittingly enough, Vanessa was featured as one of the “50 Most Beautiful People” in People magazine’s 1995 edition, and was honored by her friend, Prince, who wrote the song “The Most Beautiful Girl in the World” for her (she starred in the hit video). After leaving General Hospital in August 1998, Marcil joined the cast of Beverly Hills, 90210, replacing Tiffani Thiessen as the show’s vixen. Amid her stint on 90210, Vanessa starred in the disappointing films Nice Guys Sleep Alone (1999) and This Space Between Us (2000) After another disappointing film in 2002, entitled Storm Watch, Vanessa finally made her return to television in 2003, on the NBC drama Las Vegas with co-stars Molly Sims, Nikki Cox and James Caan, and did another movie entitled Fish Without A Bicycle, with Beverly Hills, 90210 co-star Brian Austin Green, whom she’s been engaged to since 2001. She also made a short return to General Hospital, from 2002 to 2003, which was honored by the Soap Opera Digest Awards, with a trophy for Favorite Return in 2003.

Vanessa is the great granddaughter of French mime Marcel Marceau, though she never met him. In March 2002, Vanessa gave birth to a baby boy named Kius Lijah Marcil-Green,and she is currently living with her fiancé, Brian Austin Green and her two dogs, Woof and Joey. She plans on begining her own line of babywear called, ‘Cash’ to raise money
for HIV/AIDS “Cash in Africa.” Ms. Vanessa Marcil is the queen of TV. Not only is Vanessa the “Most Beautiful Girl in the World,” as Prince so mildly put it, she is also smart, petite, and the queen of soap operas, both daytime and nighttime ones. Vanessa Marcil has a gift. She has the uncanny ability to convince otherwise sane men to endure hours and hours of less than manly TV viewing such as Beverly Hills, 90210 and General Hospital. Lucky for us, she moved on to the NBC hit Las Vegas, in 2003, which is more acceptable for male-viewing audiences. Not to mention, she co-stars with fellow hotties Nikki Cox and Molly Sims. Although Vanessa has tried to make a respectable movie career for herself, it seems that she was meant to be the queen of television. Which isn’t so bad, especially considering that people tend to watch the shows she stars in just to see her. Vanessa is a cool cat. There’s no denying that Vanessa is as sexy as they get. She has the shiny black hair, the cat-shaped eyes, the tiny, tight little body, and of course, a smile that can make us say “yes” to anyand all of her demands. Although she never really made it big in film, Vanessa Marcil has had a pretty lucrative television career. From the soap operas General Hospital and 90210 to her current stint as Samantha on Las Vegas, and made-forTV movies like To Love, Honor, and Deceive, Vanessa has done pretty well herself and has easily managed to stay gainfully employed. She aldo gained some notoriety as a Head & Shoulders model, and as Prince’s muse for his song, “The Most Beautiful Girl in the World.” Vanessa Marcil combines good taste in clothing with trend-setting
style to make her quite the fashion maven. Say what you will about Fergie, at least she’s honest! As Exhibit A, we present the following quote, which she gave to Truflava Magazine after we asked her why she was planning on re-releasing her smash debut “The Dutchess” as a deluxe edition on May 27th. “That’s what everyone’s doing nowadays, I hear,” she laughed. “The label came to me and said this would be a good idea, and I thought, ‘Well, OK, if this is another way for me to put out these songs that I’ve been wanting people to hear, then great.’ The music business is changing, and this repackage thing is a new way for people to put out songs that they want people to hear, so I’m cool with it.” We’re cool with it too, Ferg. We’ll have more info about the Dutchess reissue closer to its release, but we’d be remiss if we didn’t pass on some information about one of its new tracks right now: “Party People” which, incidentally, is also featured on Nelly’s upcoming Brass Knuckles. Turns out, it was Fergie’s first. “ ‘Party People’ with Nelly, I’m thrilled with that one. It was originally going to be on The Dutchess, but we didn’t finish it. So Polow Da Don played it for Nelly, and he put his thing on it without me even knowing,” Fergie explained. “I had originally recorded a version of it with Trina ... and I thought I was saving that one for my next album, but Polow played it for me with Nelly on it. They called me over the phone: ‘Fergie Ferg, what’s up? You’re gonna die!’ And I just went, ‘OK, maybe I should save this one for the next album,’ ‘cause it just really excited me when I heard it. It’s that song that just gets me going.” The dynamic duo shot a video for the song earlier this month in Los Angeles. “It’s just us wilding out. ... We had a mosh pit going on,” Ferg said of the video, which is already beginning to make the rounds. And though Fergie’s plans for the next few months include a whole lot of “couch-potato stuff: just relaxing and watching ‘I Love New York’ marathons,” she’s already got her mind set on filming another video — one that she’s not ashamed to admit would be a complete “dream” for her. “I’ve got a new song called ‘Labels or Love,’ which is going to be the [theme] to the ‘Sex and the City’ film, and I’m so thrilled that they picked me to do it. ... I grew up with those characters. I used to watch with my mom all the time — we’d tune in every week,” she said. “And so I loved those characters, and to be a part of the whole thing was such an honor. Is it possible for rappers to make it on their own without a team
behind them? Well anything is possible. But why would any artist want to shoulder the burden of the entertainment business themselves? If you watch the fictional show HBO’s “Entourage”, then you know that it’s based on four individuals from Queens, New York. Two of them are a pair of brothers, and the other two are childhood friends.When the lead character, Vincent “Vinny” Chase starts to get recognized through the film ranks for his acting, his friend Eric “E” Murphy takes on the role of his manager helping to navigate his career, so it can reach further levels of success. That’s understandable. So How was it like growing up in the Bronx?
I mean I love the Bronx man, The Bronx was the first experience in my life. Not to mention there’s a lot of talent from the Bronx, know what I mean? So with that said, there was a lot of opportunity in the 90’s.
Speaking of which, how did you and 50 [Cent] first cross paths? Well he grew up in Queens, and I grew up in the Bronx. But it was Jam Master Jay who first introduced us. It was the late great Jam Master Jay who gave us an introduction. He had a studio, and he was working on some stuff and he was playing me music from this new artist. And he was like; “Yo, this dude is sick!” “As a matter of fact, I’m gonna go get him right now!” “I’m gonna go get him!” He came back in the studio, and the [kid] came in the basement, and it was this dude, 50 [Cent]. Really? Yeah, yo. It was in 1996, I’ve known this dude for like 12 years.
That’s cool. So when did you initially get into the music business? One of my biggest breaks came when I did an internship at the William Morris Agency, and that got me a lot of connects. I was doing the street team at the same time for Nas’ It Was Written album, and I went to a concert where I bumped into Foxy Brown. And I sold her a track. I got a little $2,500.00 real fast in the pocket; know what I mean. So that was the first track you did that got you attention? Yeah that was it, the one for Foxy Brown.
I dig it, but do you still have time to sit down and make beats with all that you have going on? I just did a beat in a half hour last night. I came off the plane to New York, and I got to my studio where dude is chilling, and I banged-out a beat in a half hour. It don’t take me too long, once I get a melody because I got the illest drums in the world, it’s all in me. It’s just whenever I have downtime. Like when I’m done with the calls and I’m done with the meetings, I’m in my room, my studio, my house or where ever; I’m gonna just put it in. If it takes too long, something’s wrong. [Laughing] What did you say? “If it takes too long, something’s wrong?” Yeah.. [Laughs] 50

[Laughs] I like that saying. So what’s the most difficult part of the industry for you? That is garbage right now, this shit is whack. This shit is like, come on, what’s really going on?! I can’t even explain it almost. All these artists with no real budgets, and no real albums coming out. It’s like nothing is really popping, know what I’m saying. Dudes might as well start making “We Are The World” group albums, because those are the best records coming out. All these little; 9-10 featured-artist records. Of course you got 50 [Cent] who’s always exciting and Kanye [West], Jay-Z, and Common. Those are a lot of dudes, but [we] gotta start popping albums out every year. Ain’t no time for no 2-year breaks, ain’t no time for none of these breaks. Ain’t no time. We gotta get at it like how Master P was doing it, dropping every four weeks like; “F**k that!” That’s why these consumers right now are like; “Well I don’t know..” But as for me, I always bought albums of anybody I liked when I was coming up. I used to buy their shit. So you don’t really buy albums anymore? I do just to be curious about what’s going on. But people would rather just download that one hit. Now they can her your whole album before they buy it, and if they don’t like it, they won’t buy it. Or they can just download the one record they like. F**k that man; [we] f**ked up with that. So you think its important for producers to have managers just like artists do? They either have to have managers, or know-how. My know-how is that whether I scraped up that last bit of money, I flew to an ASCAP Panel, or where ever I had to go like a concert, an in-store, or a record label. I put myself in a position to be around these dudes, and it happened for me. When I met Jam Master Jay, I had 10 minutes to say something that would have him say; “Yeah, I f**ks with this kid.” Because I was young, you know what I’m saying, and he did that. He was my first mentor that took the time out to show me the game. Are there any up-and-coming producers that stick out in your mind right now? I’ll tell you about five of them, XTRA from Detroit, he’s vicious, he’s crazy. And he’s a whiteboy, the kid is nuts yo! Then you got Slycc, he’s a musician from Chicago turned producer. Then you got this new kid I’m working with named Acyd Rayn. He’s doing like R&B and he’s the illest f**kin’ keyboard player I’ve encountered in a while. He’s retarded on the keyboard, it’s like he’s tap dancing on the keyboard, this dude is nuts. Then you got this chic Tease, who’s also from Detroit. Detroit got some sh*t cracking up there. And finally there’s Rapid Fire. They’re all up from Detroit, but they’re moving around to other areas to get their careers cracking. These are all producers that whether they sample, or whether they’re playing the keyboard, their sound is crisp. continued on pg. 54

VANESSA: Oh, we were never seeing each other, and I was never married to him. Rumors. We were a part of a group of kids who did drugs together. We all drank a lot, and we’d do our occasional hit of E. Nobody knew that he was even doing [heroin]. It was a surprise to all of us when he got arrested. He was a great kid when I knew him. I was never his wife, so that’s the only thing that confuses me about it. TRUFLAVA: Have you confronted him about that?
VANESSA: No. I don’t really feel the need to defend myself. TRUFLAVA: Would you say that Corey had a License to Drive, or was he more of a Lost Boy when it came to his prowess in the bedroom?
VANESSA: I can’t answer questions about somebody who I knew for five minutes. I drank too much when I was a teenager and don’t remember much about most of the people I was hanging out with. TRUFLAVA: Your Las Vegas costar James Caan used to be one of Hollywood’s preeminent bad boys. From what you’ve seen, is he now one of Hollywood’s preeminent bad senior citizens?
VANESSA: He’s hot! We were just doing a big press junket, and every girl who sat down to interview him turned red. It took me, like, two weeks to get past the fact that he’s not Sonny from The Godfather. “You’re Sonny. Please, do not speak to me, because I’ll have to pee.” When I get nervous, I have to pee. And then I hold myself, because I never got over that when I was a kid. [One time,] I was shopping, and the girl in the store was like, “Why are you holding your bird?”—which is what we call it. TRUFLAVA: I’ve not heard of this euphemism.
VANESSA: Oh, you haven’t? It’s a nice, clean one. You know how guys always walk around and adjust? I always find a need to adjust. I actually don’t really need to adjust, it’s just that I feel comforted. TRUFLAVA: Aside from crotch grabbing, what else is particularly guylike about you?
VANESSA: I don’t like to cuddle. After sex, I like to eat and go to sleep. I don’t like to cuddle and talk. I’m not into getting married. TRUFLAVA: I thought you were engaged to Brian Austin Green!
VANESSA: No, I’m not. All rumor. I’ve never been married. I’m not engaged. All rumors. TRUFLAVA: Did Prince really have 400 purple roses delivered to you?
VANESSA: Prince has done a lot of amazing things that I would never talk about, out of respect for him and his privacy. TRUFLAVA: I’ve read that he responds to Victor. You know I’m going to need to ask why?

Was there any reason why you weren’t using an ASR? Because I grew up around MPC’s. We went from SP 12’s to MPC’s. I came from that era in the Bronx where everybody was SP 12’s or MPC’ing it. So once I touched it, I was stuck with it, and I love it. How was the experience like working with Dr. Dre? Since we’re on the subject of beats. And Jimmy Iovine? What did you learn from them? Well I learned that it’s absolutely a business. And with [Dr.] Dre I learned a lot, because its all about sound quality and consistency. He takes a long time to give you something, but when he gives it to you there’s nothing greater. But honestly I don’t got that Dre money, so I gotta keep my shit coming fast. So I keep the quality and the consistency and just try to produce a lot more. That’s what I learned from Dre, he’s a doctor for real. He really gets into the records, and I try to keep that same kind of vibe going where every record counts. And with Jimmy, he just taught me honestly that’s it’s a business. “There’s a Michael Jackson, there’s a Curtis Jackson, and soon they’ll be another Jackson.” So he’ll tell you; “These guys come and go, he’s going to keep moving.” He taught me it’s not personal, its only business. So I got to keep that in my mind too. He’s somebody that’s all business. i
