Boo Paterson
A fascination with architecture, the ancient world and New York led to Boo Paterson’s latest series of paper cut images depictiong muscle-bound Greek gods in modern Manhattan. Boo’s paper-cuts, The Greek Gods in New York, depict scenes such as Atlas holding up a crumbling tenement building instead of the world (above). The artist has been interested in architecture and the ancient world since childhood. Paterson said: “I’ve lived in New York on and off since 2009 and I find its architecture and energy very inspiring. I wondered what would happen if the Greek gods helped New Yorkers today with tasks. “I love the fact that the Greek gods had human failings – they were drunk, passionate, jealous and angry. New Yorkers, too, have their emotions right at the surface…and sometimes right in your face.” The paper-cuts – which are available as laser-cut through have titles that refer to the New York habit of naming cross-sections by their prefixes. www.booyorkcity.com

SOUTH AFRICAN born designer Louis Bührmann was called in when the directors of PGS (Principal Global Solutions) wanted to create spacious boardroom that had luxury, comfort and style with a hint of a residential atmosphere. Their offices in a grand town house seconds away from Mount Street and Park Lane in London has classically proportioned interiors with Grade I marble and plaster work. Their brief was for Louis to create a spacious boardroom for members and guests with a specially designed boardroom table seating at least 12 people, equipped with the most upto-date conference technology and an additional seating area leading effortlessly on to the heated terrace.
A bronze horse sculpture served as a clever device to separate the more relaxed seating area from the boardroom table, in this way creating two spaces that combine professional efficiency and the informality of a private residence. NINA CAMPBELL has made quite a stir in the American interiors market with a collaboration with Connecticut-based accessories company Oomph to design a collection of furniture based on pieces that she owns. MARTIN Trowbridge has carefully selected more than 300 black and white images for the latest in his series of Decorating with Photographs books. Images he selected date from the very beginning of photography right up to the present day and were chosen because they are evocative, memorable, light hearted or just rather peculiar. Jennifer Shorto’s debut collection of wallcoverings is inspired by the work of Mexicobased artist Pedro Friederberg which she discovered while rummaging through a vintage furniture shop in Mexico City. She fell in love with his work and tracked him down to his extraordinary home in the bohemian quarter of Mexico City, a house full of eclectic objects including collections of antique cigarette boxes, model house, and kittens. Born in 1936 the son of German Jewish parents, Pedro escaped to Mexico at the beginning of the second world war becoming part of the Mexican surrealist movement - Los Hortos. Jennifer became a textile collector when she came across a very beautiful 18th century Suzani at the back of a cupboard. “Since then my interest has never waned. I visited many places and befriended archeologists, writers and antique dealers who shared this passion and were keen on exploring less travelled lands,” she said. “A few years ago I acquired a West African fabric from the early 20th century which was part of a group of textiles which were still undocumented. It gave me the desire and inspiration to start printing and engage in keeping certain patterns and their spirit alive.” She studied art history at the Louvre Museum in Paris. In the last few years she has been collaborating with decorators bringing her designs as well as precious textiles to a variety of projects. GEOFFREY BENNISON (1921 - 1984) ranks among England’s most influential designers, very much in the same league as other design greats such as John Fowler. He defied conventional notions of style to conjure up magnificent settings for discerning clients who loved his theatrical and romantic sensibility. He used antique textiles alongside his own fabrics to achieve a complex mix of scale, pattern, and colour that changed the way people on both sides of the Atlantic arranged furniture and did up houses - some examples of which are here. His talent for combining eclectic objects, an unerring eye, and a deep knowledge of antiques earned him a reputation for sophisticated originality. Even today, leading designers turn to him for inspiration. In Geoffrey Bennison: Master Decorator, Gillian Newberry tells his fascinating story from his early days at the Slade School of Art and his work as an antiques dealer in London during the swinging sixties, to his later career as an interior designer. BIG BOLD NEW LOOKS The secret is out: we have fallen in love with colour again says Saffron Hare
F
or some time now, in both residential and commercial interiors, the starting point has been a refined and restricted palette of neutrals, with texture being used as the key embellishment. Gradually though, richer, stronger and deeper colours have been creeping back. Originally we saw them used as ‘pops’ to create focus points with cushions, blinds or lampshades – perfect counterpoints to all the neutrals. But now the secret’s out – we officially love colour again and we can even handle it in large areas; big and bold on the walls, as paints or wallpapers, and in large expanses of fabric as curtains or upholstery. It’s the next generation of the so-called eclectic look, which has its roots in Britain’s magpie cultural past, when great houses and stately homes were never afraid to mix acquisitions from all over the world, sit new next to old and showcase colour and decorative detailing. Similarly, today’s new multi-layered luxury sees contemporary pieces confidently curated and mixed with anything from industrial design to characterful decorative antiques and colourful velvets and silks with a reflective sheen picking up the wider trend for burnished and light-reflective surfaces. This noticeable shift towards lush, multi-tonal interiors has its genesis (as so often) in the high end of the interiors market, in the chic hotels and premium domestic projects where real individuality is prized and designers create spaces with an authentic personality. Abroad too, developing markets such as Russia and China have never lost their love of colour and decoration and perhaps this too is starting to feed back into the British sensibility. Premium textiles designed specifically for those markets are selling well in the UK too. Also left out in the cold for some years, large-scale designs and grand 92

embellishments are once again being used to bring character and a comforting warmth to interiors. After years of blinds and shutters, lavish curtains are also making a comeback as designers exploit their potential to create memorable features. Bedhangings and bedheads are other keynotes for layering colours and patterns into sophisticated interiors. My family textile company, James Hare, celebrates its 150th Anniversary this year with a collection taking inspiration from our own history which stretches back to the Victorian era. It combines the co-ordinating neutrals which decorators will always need with decorative fabrics featuring strong colours, large scale designs and dense metallic embroidery. These are the types of fabrics for which we are seeing an ever-increasing demand, both in the UK and in international markets, and which our own trend forecasters have been correctly predicting for a couple of years. Other industry forecasters are also underlining the shift to denser, more saturated colours in 2015, with Copper Orange and Marsala definitely moving things along from the neutral palette. Elsewhere in the market, wallpaper specialists also report new interest in decorative designs and just as we are seeing the return to greater expanses of fabrics, they are seeing their papers being used not just for single feature walls but throughout whole rooms: a modern rediscovery of a traditional use of colour and pattern in interiors. It seems that after years of austere architectural interiors being the desired objective, we are learning a new language of opulence – far beyond the 50 shades of grey and beige which have been so dominant for so long.

Robert O’Byrne is a writer who specialises in fine art. He is Vice-President of the Irish Georgian Society. In a piece written shortly before Fort William was sold at auction he looks at the history of a home that holds many warm memories for him.

ocated a couple of miles west of Lismore and on a superb site above the Blackwater River, in Ireland, Fort William dates from the 1830’s when it was erected to the designs of those prolific brothers James and George William Pain, both of whom worked as apprentice architects for John Nash in London before moving to Ireland. The Pains produced houses in whatever style was requested by their clients and at Fort William they came up with a benign form of Tudor Revival. Faced in local sandstone which has a wonderfully mottled appearance, the exterior is ornamented with an abundance of gables and pinnacles and angled chimneys but these are decorative flourishes on what is essentially a classical building, as can be seen by the regular sash windows. Fort William was built for John Bowen Gumbleton whose family, originally from Kent, had settled in the area by the early 18th century. Their main residence once called Castlerichard but later renamed Glencairn lies a little further upriver. The property on that site was substantially transformed around 1814 by John Gumbleton’s father into fashionable High Gothic (complete with faux cloister) and this may be the explanation for Fort William’s appearance: in every sense a chronological continuation of the parent house. Ever since being built, Fort William has regularly changed hands. On John Bowen Gumbleton’s death in 1858, the estate was inherited by his son 17-year old John Henry but he died at sea eight years later. Ownership of Fort William then passed to his two sisters but they lived elsewhere and so the house was rented to tenants. In 1910 the place was taken by LtCol. Richard Keane, whose older brother was Sir John Keane of nearby Cappoquin. A note in the forthcoming auction catalogue notes

that Richard Keane and his wife Alice ‘had two cars, one of which replete with a cocktail cabinet was commandeered by the IRA during the War of Independence and never returned.’ Furthermore during the subsequent Civil War the servants’ wing at Fort William was occupied by Free State troops; this may help to explain why Sir John Keane’s house was burnt out in 1923 by the opposition. Richard Keane died in 1925 following the accidental discharge of his shotgun and seven years later the estate was sold to a local man who continued the established pattern of renting the house; among the tenants at this time was Adele Astaire, sister of Fred, who in 1932 had married Lord Charles Cavendish, younger son of the ninth Duke of Devonshire; for centuries the Devonshires have owned the neighbouring estate of Lismore Castle. The ducal connections continue because after a brief Gumbleton interlude in 1946 Fort William was bought for £10,000 by the second Duke of Westminster. This was the famed Bend’Or, one-time lover of Chanel (among many others) who following the failure of his third marriage had fallen in love with Nancy Sullivan, daughter of Brigadier-General Edward Sullivan. An outstanding horsewoman she had grown up in Glanmire on the outskirts of Cork city.

This may explain why the Duke acquired Fort William, although it is worth remembering that a daughter from his first marriage, Lady Ursula Grosvenor, together with her second husband Major Stephen Vernon lived at Fairyfield outside Kinsale, County Cork. Whatever the explanation, the Duke certainly spent some time in the house: the dining room panelling is said to have come from the interior of one of his yachts and he is also believed responsible for installing the French painted and gilded boiseries in the drawing room. Following his death in 1953 his widow (who only died in 2003) retained Fort William but spent the greater part of her time at Eaton Lodge, Cheshire where her stables held many fine racehorses, not least Arkle who won the Cheltenham Gold Cup three times in succession. Fort William was sold again in 1969 to an American couple, Murray and Phyllis Mitchell. Following her death, it was bought by Ian Agnew, one-time Deputy Chairman of Lloyd’s. Ian acquired the place on a whim but he had strong Irish connections through his mother, Ruth Moore who had grown up at Mooresfort, County Tipperary. The Moores were an old Roman Catholic family. Ian’s greatgrandfather, Arthur Moore was created a Papal Count in 1879; the previous year he had provided most of the funds necessary to establish the Cistercian monastery of Mount St Joseph outside Roscrea, County Tipperary. Curiously Glencairn, the estate immediately adjacent to Fort William is today occupied by Cistercian nuns. Ian and I never spoke much of his forebears but among the most remarkable was his maternal grandmother, Lady Dorothie Feilding. A much decorated volunteer nurse and ambulance driver during the First World War, in September 1916 she became the first woman to be awarded the Military Medal for bravery in the field. After she died in 1935 her husband Captain Charles Moore moved to England to become manager of the Royal Stud. Continuing those links, Ian’s father Sir Godfrey Agnew was for 21 years Clerk of the Privy Council. A wonderful man with seemingly boundless gusto, Ian Agnew went to enormous trouble to restore and modernise Fort William while ensuring none of the patina it had accumulated was lost. (He also put in some time trying to teach me the finer nuances of fly fishing on the Blackwater, with less successful results.) The outcome was a house of tremendous comfort and warmth, very much a reflection of his personality and that of his beloved wife Sara. Sadly Ian died four years ago and since then Sara has been literally holding the fort, and continuing the tradition of abundant hospitality already established while her husband was alive. n the heart of the South Coast’s Lymington lies a surprising Aladdin‘s cave brimming with astonishing 18th and 19th century antique furniture, decorative arts, and maritime effects. The second half of the week he would head the Midlands and the North and repeat the process. The closure of the Harrods department a couple of years ago has freed up time to fuel his passion for the ocean and collecting all things nautical, whilst his obsession with buying the best pieces of furniture on the market still continues. TIME TO TAKE A STEP UP Well designed staircases take centre stage once again says Richard McLane
T
he post-crash consumer is reexamining the values, institutions and lifestyles that led him astray and this soul searching has led to a different approach on many levels now that rebuilding has begun. Clients are again beginning to buy into bespoke manufacturing. This has particular relevance for staircase design and manufacture. At the height of the boom uber-modern and statement stairs were very much in vogue and it was all about making an impact; the clear trend now is towards timeless design, honesty and provenance. That is not to say we are going to see a jump in demand for traditional wooden staircases - rather the opposite. Consumers, now familiar with the concept of bespoke staircases, expect choice as standard. Space is increasingly at a premium in homes, and staircase designers often have to maximize the illusion of light or openness, incorporate storage areas or work cleverly around room entrance and exits whilst executing a staircase design brief. The ability to tailor exact shape or choose specific materials is becoming more important to the overall success of a project. The UK’s ageing housing stock is breathing new life into the refurbishment market as consumers and developers alike see the value of working with existing structures, rather than embarking upon a new build project as may have been the case previously. Refurbishment projects are where intelligent design is crucial to achieve successful and empathetic cohesion between old and new. The clever part about design is having 128 Bridge for Design Summer 2015
the ability and insight to incorporate both traditional and contemporary materials into a commission that withstands the test of time. Getting the staircase right plays a crucial role. Architects’ plans for period properties rarely exist and structural analysis is usually required before renovation work. Supporting walls need to be identified and the condition of timber and existing masonry must be checked before attaching or drilling into. Almost certainly interfaces between existing and new will need to be cleverly designed in order to integrate the staircase successfully into the property. In these circumstances specialist staircase manufacturers come into their own. Even if the walls are not sound enough to support a cantilever staircase, hidden frameworks can be erected to allow the client to have this style of design. Every interior should be treated as a unique space – a sleek, stainless steel staircase works well in lofty spaces and buildings with a high-tech, contemporary style whereas a very grand home with an impressive entrance hall requires something more majestic. The stairs should interact with the building. Today the staircase is no longer out of sight, as the trend towards open plan living has promoted its importance. Being visible from key areas of the property, a feature staircase adds desirability and the wow factor as well as being functional.

outh African born designer Hubert Zandberg’s glamorous and eclectic London home is a master class in context and combination. Less is more is certainly not a dictum with which designer Hubert Zandberg is familiar. His London home is chock full in a thrilling where-to-look-first kind of way an extravaganza of artefacts, art, curios and curiosities commanding every surface. The house’s history is almost as quirky as its contents, no doubt part of why it appealed to Zandberg, whose passion for the provenance of pieces has informed his singular style. Split over five levels, it was once the canal-keeper’s house, the lower levels storing hay, horses and coaches. But, oddly enough, its most recent incarnation before the designer moved in was as a motorbike workshop. ‘The house has been many different things, so it seemed to welcome all my disparate objects, and even invite them,’ says Zandberg. The designer’s South African heritage is immediately apparent. ‘It’s a cliché but the truth is you can’t grow up in the Karoo and not be affected by it. It’s always prevalent in my work,’ he says. For him it has two sides – the bright Africa of gold sun and sand, and bold tribal colour, and its spare, monochromatic counterpart sun-bleached bones, quills, horns. Eurocentric swing and new context which adds an element of edginess. ‘I feel that by showing the artefacts and art not as separate concepts, it gives the effect relevance. My friend, designer Inca Waddell, described it as Pitt Rivers Museum meets the Tate Modern’ he says. Foremost a collector, then a designer, the higgledy ungallery space, as he calls it, was found to house his collections rather than they being acquired to fill it. ‘For some it may be overwhelming but for me the dialogue of all these objects is actually strangely calming. It’s a concept rather than clutter,’ he says. The dialogue is one of culture and colour, life and death, heritage and humour, and art. In curating the rooms, Zandberg found that pieces acquired further meaning, a process he finds fascinating. ‘The spaces evolve organically and sometimes when I stand back and look at a scene again, I see symbolism I didn’t ever intend, but that must have been in the back of my mind,’ he muses. He’s referring in particular to a tableau of objets in a guestroom, where a Madonna under a cloche sits alongside a tiny army tank. ‘The reference to religion and war isn’t lost on me it shows you how powerful the subconscious is,’ he says. In the master bedroom pops of yellow are an incongruous accent in a predominantly black space underpinned by religious symbolism and imagery that borders on the macabre skulls, snakes, crucifixes. Zandberg’s skill is in the mix, the colourful ikat cushions and overscaled pop art pulling it back from the edge. Zandberg has also played on the idea of light and dark, with certain rooms engineered to function better as night-time spaces. The main reception room trickily situated in that you enter it straight off the street – is almost a public space and so has been conceptualised as such. ‘I decided that rather than fight the room’s characteristics, I should hand it over to that purpose,’ he says. The result is ultra-glamorous gold accents, midnight-blue walls and moody contemporary art give it the mystique of a sexy nightclub rather than a run-of-the-mill living room. Conversely, the study one floor down is a sunny, rustic, almost safari feeling space, whose savannah-inspired palette of browns and tan and a photograph by Anne Hardy of lush foliage are a door to another world. ‘It’s ethnic but also Modernist,’ he says of the evocative space that sees a Brazilian rosewood desk nonchalantly paired with bunches of African heads and a tribal-pattern rug. These seemingly effortless and yet complex combinations offer insight into Zandberg’s world, a fascinating playground of challenging imagery, rich symbolism and charming, playful irreverence. A perfect mix of old and new, colourful and quirky in this updated family home

W
hen Jeffrey Bilhuber was given the task of updating a Queen Anne manse in Tuxedo Park, New York, he faced more than one challenge. The first was the fact that the house had been in the client’s family for three generations – she summered there as a child, and when she married, it had been a wedding gift from her mother. ‘We needed to bring the house forwards without turning our backs on a history that had provided so much pleasure,’ Bilhuber said. ‘You have to acknowledge the contributions, but you have an obligation to set yourself free from your childhood and make your own story.’ The second challenge lay in the well-meaning efforts by a host of amateurs who had already tried to set the house free from period gloom. Before Bilhuber was finally called in, decades worth of friends, relations, and all manner of erstwhile ‘designers’ had given the house periodic doses of modernity and zip, ranging from an overpowering crystal chandelier to aggressively graphic wallpapers ‘Some of the wallpaper might not have been my first choice,’ says the good-natured Bilhuber drily. ‘But I thought, let’s give it a go. I looked at it as an opportunity.’ Plus there was a wonderful accumulation of continental furniture that enabled him to connect to the house’s own history, as well as the chance to delve into the history of Tuxedo Park, a hyper-exclusive enclave in New York’s Ramapo Mountains. Founded by Pierre Lorillard IV as a private hunting and fishing reserve at the end of the 19th century, it served as a cool retreat to such storied Americans as J.P. Morgan and Dorothy Draper and gave us the word tuxedo (when a Lorillard descendant turned up at the annual Autumn Ball in a jacket devoid of coattails). ‘Each generation had made their additions to the house with sincerity,’ Bilhuber says, adding that his role was to mesh the disparate components and give them ‘more than their fair share of CPR’ In the end the designer managed to infuse life into the stodgy bits, tone down the wackier additions and accommodate the raison d’etre of both the house and the community high, old school society entertaining. One of his first acts was to open up the spacious living rooms which had been shrunk by a typical arrangement of a pair of sofas flanking the fireplace. ‘It was as though a studio apartment had been dropped into this lovely room,’ says Bilhuber. His trademarks include long, commodious sofas, so he simply carved off the ends of the existing pair and made them into one comfortable piece. This inspired bit of what Bilhuber laughingly dubs ‘Texas chainsaw decorating’ made room for two more distinct seating areas, a small group near the fireplace and another around a table for playing games. Games, especially Bridge, are the owners passion, so the lower level club room was designed for cutthroat competition with whimsical umbrella-topped card tables placed between another long sofa and a row of indestructible French bistro chairs. Bilhuber describes the aesthetic as ‘Mona Bismarck meets Doris

Duke in Diamondhead’ and its playfulness is an example of what he felt was his mission. ‘The house was built for entertainment,’ he explains. ‘It is a place in which to be amused and have fun. All the prescribed restrictions were off the menu.’ The library, for example, already had its own built-in stand-up bar. Complete with stools and back shelves. So he skimmed the rather depressing stucco walls and painted cheery stripes directly onto the plaster. ‘I love the pizzaz of it all,’ he says. ‘You can just hear the clank of glasses at five o’clock and see the cocktail rings jammed on every finger.’ Bilhuber brought the light into the main entrance hall by replacing 142 Bridge for Design Summer 2015
the panelling’s brown paint with varying shades of turquoise. In the dining room, he animated the circa-1970’s brown snakeskin wallpaper with enormous pier mirrors, capped off the existing chandelier with Chinese red shades and surrounded the modern table with Frances Elkins Loop chairs. But in other rooms the goal was to modulate rather than amp up. In a bedroom overpowered by acid-green and white bamboo wallpaper he brought things down to earth with a chic brown and white carpet and neutralised the paper’s fretwork with shades of a colourful but soft batik fabric. In the master bedroom the existing brown silk curtains and grasscloth wallpaper were punctuated with splashes of cinnebar, pomegranate

and fire engine red a colour scheme that was inspired by the experience of driving through Tuxedo Park’s massive stone gates and into a landscape of deep green mountains and dark cascades. ‘Suddenly you see these brilliantly coloured rhododendrons and mountain laurel,’ Bilhuber says. ‘I thought there you go that’s that. It told me exactly what the house wanted to be.’ Indeed shots of purple, magenta, orange and fuchsia run throughout, lending narrative and uniting the occasionally mad mix in improbable, wonderful, harmony. Bilhuber points out that Tuxedo Park itself is a symbol of great American county-house optimism. Now that this particular house has come into its own, it too becomes’ a story about confidence and clients who understand it.

SATISFY YOUR EMOTIONS The new sociable kitchen is a sign we know how to live well says Johnny Grey
O
ver my career my focus as a designer of kitchens has shifted. In the early days, consciously at least, it was all about aesthetics and craftsmanship. Now I am interested in a less tangible quest - understanding the kind of environments that make people feel happiest; a move from the physical to the invisible, as new knowledge gained from behavioural psychology and neuroscience informs space planning and furniture design. The future of the kitchen is about satisfying our brains, bodies and emotions: not just the supply of well made cabinetry and appliances. More efficient cooking spaces? We’ve done that. The test of effective kitchen design should begin with an efficient, compact cooking zone as this will leave enough space to fulfill the kitchen’s expanded social role. It is now a living room in which you cook, a hybrid space which has evolved from taking functions from other rooms. It includes the sitting room now most likely to be used as a media room, the hallway that is a greeting area no longer seen as a defacto requirement and the dining room which has morphed into an occasional celebratory and optional space. Richard Wrangham in his book Catching Fire tells us how our brains became human-sized through the nutritional benefits of cooked food, freeing early humans from spending their time searching for food and digesting it. Cooking promotes sociability as collaborative households are more successful at maximizing food resources. We now know the brain is elastic and develops by acquiring new experience and skills, so our behaviour at home, how we work and use our 156 Bridge for Design Summer 2015
leisure time becomes incorporated into our brains synaptic structure. A key social trend in families is both partners working and children often having long school hours which means time together is limited and precious. So every house needs a flexible ‘common’ room where encounters can be turned into effective exchanges and where different activities can be accommodated. Contemporary life is full of anxiety. Domestic space offers us sanctuary and plays a role in our day-to-day well-being. Increasingly as we adapt old homes and build new ones we are moving towards the ‘kitchen-centric’ house but there are still a few hurdles in the way. Developers and house builders could greatly improve what they offer with better educated designers and more knowledge of these trends. The good news is that as homeowners are now more aware of the value of design and of our instinctive needs than previous generations. Open-plan living and central heating has liberated us from the house laid out as a series of private rooms and our experience of round the clock sociability. Shared tasks between genders means all members of the household get stuck into cooking. Awareness of the pleasures and creativity associated with food and the presence of children are both examples of why being in the contemporary kitchen feels so good.

t’s hard to mistake Manhattan for any other city. True, some of downtown’s cobblestone lanes have a slight whiff of London, and a few brownstone blocks in the west 20’s could pass for Boston. But it’s the rare street that conjures Paris. Paula Caravelli found one, however, on the sleepy northern reaches of the Upper East Side, a lovely sloping block studded with Beaux Arts buildings. It’s not easy to articulate what, exactly, provokes thoughts of the French capital, but it’s there. A similar Parisian spirit subtly pervades the interior designer’s home. Composed of two elegantly detailed apartments that have been joined, the place seems so intimate that it is almost surprising to hear Caravelli lives there with her husband, James, and 18-year-old son Christian. It is even more of a shock to learn that, until recently, it also housed the couple’s three other, now grown sons Evan, Gregory and Paul. In fact, ambiguity and unexpected are key components of the place, which is less a statement of style – Caravelli is not one for statements – than a delicate balance of disparate elements, and all the more European for that. It’s epitomised by a pair of David Armstrong photographs, dreamily blurred images of New York street scenes, which harmonise with the huge trees just outside the licving room windows and the graceful neoclassical and Regency-style mansions across the street.

Caravelli, who is half of the design team Paula + Martha (her partner Martha Angus lives in San Francisco) had no interest in doing up her place with some sort of idee fixe. ‘It’s probably a terrible thing for a decorator to say, but I don’t like trends,’ she notes. ‘I don’t work that way. I can’t put something in my house, or a client’s house, for that matter, if I don’t love it.’ Of course, lots of designers fill their homes with things that they love. What sets Caravelli’s apart is a mix of art, furniture, colours and finishes that feel truly personal. Nothing is chosen merely for its look or effect. But then, unlike so many people who come to New York to try to create a place and a history that squares with their dreams, Caravelli’s past needed no retouching. She was born and brought up on Long Island in a family brimming with painters and musicians both professional and amateur, where creative impulses were not 168 Bridge for Design Summer 2015
only indulged, they were expected. ‘It’s in the blood,’ she says ‘We’re a family of artists. Growing up we were always making something, playing music, redecorating, painting. That was the atmosphere.’ The apartment provides ample proof of this genetic bent. The foyer holds a sculpture by her sister Janet Buillet. The dining room features a changing array of paintings, including a gorgeous abstract by Caravelli herself, who studied art before turning to design. And scattered everywhere are works by a childhood hero, her uncle Augustus Mino who was an artist and advertising creative director in New York City. As for the piano in the living room, Caravelli grew up playing, as did her four sons. Of her choice of career, she says with a smile: ‘Everyone in my family is a decorator – I’m just the first one to do it for a living.’ Though her talent may be innate, she has honed it over the years, becoming a

master at discreetly mixing not only traditional and modern (a vintage secretary with a quirky mid-century French seat; a contemporary dining table and Italian neoclassical chairs) but European and Asian elements as well (a Chinese-style brass cocktail table with Regency-style spoon chairs and a Gustavian settee) Likewise, the apartment’s palette walks a pitch-perfect line between rich tones – an array of blues in the master bedroom, the kitchen’s brandy coloured cabinetry, the cocoabrown dining room and a host of soft neutrals. Even Caravelli’s one concession to cacophony, a complex collage in her home office, is in restrained black and white. ‘It’s so important to be able to come home to a place that has serenity,’ she says ‘That’s what I tried to create.’ But as any mother of four will tell you, no mere combination of colours and textures can handle everything that life, and children, throw your way. So she has happily embraced one modern convenience
notoriously lacking in most Paris apartments. ‘I believe in closets – everywhere,’ she says. ‘You have to have places to put stuff away.’ And she adds with a knowing smile, ‘We have a really great housekeeper.’

wo years ago Darryl Carter yearned to unwind. The Washington DC interior designer’s calendar was jammed with client meetings, plans to launch a furniture collection and book deadlines. The pressure was on, and ‘I needed a place to decompress,’ he says. Darryl knew where he could do just that. He had always loved the Plains, a Virginia hamlet about 50 miles from the nation’s capital, and nearby he found an 1840’s stucco-and-clapboard house with several fireplaces and a 140-foot long wisteria pergola. ‘I was charmed, and I bought it in just two days,’ he says. Darryl’s rustic-meets-refined escape is a textbook example of the neutral palette and strong silhouettes he has made his professional hallmarks since giving up practicing law for interior design a decade ago. Stucco hearths and primitive wood benches contrast with an occasional rarefied English or Italian antique. Weathered barn doors have been repurposed into cabinets, espresso-colour cotton curtains warm up the living and dining rooms, and a narrow 12-foot dining table made of reclaimed wood seats 16 friends for the house speciality: chicken potpie. ‘I like to call the style of this place Modern Barn,’ says Darryl, a tall man with a deep voice whose client roster includes Washington power players and international financiers. The focal point of the dining room is the large antique barn door with a naive painting of a horse in simple black-and-white
potential one would expect from this rural setting. Here he can sit down and read a biography, refinish a piece of furniture or indulge in another of his favourite country pleasures: listening to the sound of the raindrops on the metal roof. ‘It feels remote, but I am minutes from organic markets and a few very charming restaurants,’ the designer says of the location. Darryl starts to unplug from pressures and duties the moment he zips away for the weekend from his five-storey Embassy Row townhouse, which was once the chancery of the embassy of Oman. The last leg of the journey takes him through the rolling hills and horse farms of bucolic Fauquier County, where the wooded countryside seems straight out of an 18th century landscape painting.

‘The approach is hypnotic,’ says Darryl, who typically cranks up and opera or hip-hop CD as he makes his way to his second home. ‘It gets me in my right mental place,’ he adds. ‘When I see black cows I know I am almost there.’ Though he’s used to fully focusing on clients and letting personal projects lag behind, this time Darryl put the completion of his rural digs on the fast track, swiftly unearthing antiques and architectural salvage stashed in storage, including a collection of antique taxidermy amassed from eBay and Paris flea markets (two wild boar heads guard the foyer). His vision for his rambling Virginia homestead involved a gentle renovation of some of its unfortunate additions, rooms that had been

tacked onto the house from the 1920’s through the 90’s. ‘The house seemed too new,’ he says. ‘It didn’t feel right. It wasn’t tactile enough.’ In a determined effort to age the structure, Darryl refaced fireplaces, removed every extraneous moulding and added more beams. Built-in cabinets were fitted with satisfyingly creaky old doors. The designer’s instructions to the renovation crew were simple and straightforward: Be purposefully sloppy and avoid perfection. ‘Please note how poorly all the walls were done,’ he says proudly, quickly adding: ‘You can’t name my contractor though – he doesn’t want any credit!’ The designer scoured salvage stores for the most humble of trappings, such as weathered hinges and hardware. ‘I wanted everything thoughtfully old,’ he explains. Ceilings, walls and floors are
painted in Benjamin Moore whites. ‘Colour is the best way to unify disparate surfaces,’ he says. Floor-to-ceiling niches (Darryl calls them cavities) were built into walls near the fireplace for storage; the stacked logs they contain seem like organic sculpture. In the kitchen, the pine cabinets gave way to open shelves of reclaimed wood. A longtime fan of subtlety, Darryl reversed a smoke-colour toile de Jouy to lessen its impact and used it to upholster two antique English reading chairs. Guests get deeply comfortable beds shelves of interesting books which have been arranged for visual appeal, some stacked, others standing upright and sheltering wing chairs equipped with warm blankets. As Darryl explains: ‘My romantic idea for this house was that people would just relax and read.’

The master bath always intrigues first-time guests, partly for its poetic emptiness but also for its curiosity factor. An oak demilune table has been turned into a sink vanity, and there’s an antique milking stool table and a generous shower. One section of wall has been left artfully unfinished, the underlying lath revealed in all its humble, horizontal glory. But it is the room’s narrow 1890’s galvanized-metal tub which gets the most comments; it looks barely large enough to shampoo Otis, the designers’ German shorthaired pointer. As the six-foot-three Darryl notes, the tub isn’t mean’t to be used: ‘It’s art. I’m never getting in there.’

t’s not an uncommon fantasy among sophisticated Manhattanites of trading in the urban digs (while maintaining a pied-a-terre, of course) for a great old house in New York’s historic Hudson Valley one with big fireplaces and lots of room for grandchildren and guests, as well as views of some of America’s loveliest countryside. That’s exactly what a financier and his wife, a former antiques dealer, were looking for when, after renting in the area for several years, they decided to make the leap and trade in their Upper East Side townhouse for a place in the country. Then reality hit. ‘We looked for ages,’ says the wife, ‘Most of the houses were dark and close to the road,’ not to mention that they are often jumbled on top of one another and, with their huge rooms, difficult to heat in the winter and cool in the summer. Then they were invited to architect Gil Schafer’s annual summer cocktail party. ‘When we got there, I said to my husband, “This is the most extraordinary Greek Revival,” she recalls.‘It didn’t have any of the problems of the other old houses in the area.’ It turns out that Schafer, a classical architect famous for his exacting restorations, had built the place for himself. The couple immediately realised that the old-new solution was their answer – the design of an old house, with its elegant proportions, infused with a contemporary layout and conveniences. country of Millbrook and hired Schafer. The last piece of the puzzle fell into place when Schafer suggested Miles Redd as decorator. Redd was the ideal choice, because, the wife acknowledges, ‘I was looking for someone with a certain whimsy. I tend to be more classical in my tastes, and I needed someone to push me a little.’ Still, this was a group with strong opinions. The situation could have been contentious, but, in fact, it turned into the best kind of creative collaboration. Schafer’s original drawings were largely inspired by traditional two-storey Greek Revivals. ‘But I knew I wanted the house to live right for us,’ the wife says, ‘not just look right.’ She was concerned that stairs could become a problem as she and her husband grew older, or if one of them were to have a horseback-riding accident. So she asked Schafer to add wings on either side, for a master bedroom suite and a large kitchen area. The additions give the structure the feel of a Palladian villa and help it nestle serenely into the landscape. How do you begin decorating a 7,500-square-foot house? ‘It was important to consider Gil’s marvellous architecture,’ says Redd. ‘The proportions, the mouldings, and the amazing staircase set the tone.’ He found a Sultanabad rug in rich hues of peacock-blue with greens and

reds. ‘That was the spring-board for us,’ he explains, and its palette ultimately provided the subtle cohesion of colour that holds true throughout the rooms. In the entrance hall, after trying several wall finishes, the trio chose peacock stripes sparked by tangerine lamps, introducing the key colour and establishing the elegant yet whimsical spirit of the interior. Beyond the entry colonnade is an expansive living room dominated by teal curtains and celery silk walls that also reiterate the colours of the Sultanabad. ‘The acidy loden sofas, animal print, and ikat pillows – that’s Miles,’ says the wife. ‘He has an extraordinary feeling for that one oddball thing that will make a room sing. The black mantels were Gil’s design, and I just flipped over them.’ Redd, who understand how hue can add emotion and flow to a house, repeated the celery colour in the couple’s bedroom with a de Gournay wall covering. For all the understated grandeur and rich colour Redd brought to the project, Schafer made sure that house functions beautifully.

o man is an island, the saying goes, but David Gilmour is all that and so much more. The Canadian entrepreneur has made his mark on everything from housewares (he brought Dansk to North America) to beverages (he founded Fiji Water) to the internet (Gilmour’s latest venture is Zinio, a digital-media firm aiming to revolutionise the way magazines and newspapers are consumed). But get him started on the subject of his life’s delight and one is treated to a paean to Wakaya, the 2,200-acre private island in Fiji where he and his wife, Jill, spend four months every year. ‘It is the most perfect thing.’ David declares of his South Seas paradise. ‘Most men I know want to own a saloon or an island. I chose the island.’ The centrepiece of the couple’s getaway is their Wakaya Club & Spa, an eco-paradise where the food is grown organically, the dinner table is laden with native fallow deer and wild pigs, and boldface folk can avoid the glare of paparazzi flashbulbs. Only 14 couples are allowed at a time, among them Prince Felipe of Spain and his wife, Letizia, who spent their honeymoon here, and Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban. The Gilmours are also prime benefactors of their part-time community, having built a village for the Fijian workers, with a charming church and a school considered the finest in the archipelago. The most recent addition to the array of structures is a new home for the Gilmours. Called Sega na Leqa (Fijian for No Worries), it is a one-bedroom pavilion where modern architecture, native stone and wood, and Asian antiques meld into something close to magic.

‘We tried to use as many of the local materials as possible,’ explains Jill, who conceived the 10,000-square-foot house and neighbouring guest villa with Manhattan-based designer Tony Chi, a celebrated perfectionist best known for sensationally chic restaurants, such as Spoon by Alain Ducasse in Hong Kong. Composed of three wings crowned with shimmering zinc roofs inspired by classical Chinese architecture and African tribal structure, the house which took four years to build, juxtaposes walls of gathered stone, tumbled smooth, and lichen encrusted with crystalline planes of glass that frame jaw-dropping views of the Koro Sea on one side and gardens on the other. Even the reddish-brown wood used throughout the house is indigenous, a tropical hardwood called vesi. The front doors are made of it, too; their sculptural patchwork of blocks intended by Jill to recall the Dansk cutting boards her husband championed back in the 1950’s. The ebony-stained bamboo floors remain unmarred by shoe scuffs the Gilmours have adopted the Fijian habit of padding around barefoot and are scattered with antique carpets from many countries. ‘The house is an amalgamation of our tastes and our history,’ says Jill, a native of Auckland, New Zealand, who has conjured more than a dozen residences during the couple’s 34 years together. ‘I worked in fashion, which is all about texture and scale, so I’m very aware of my environment.’ She adds: ‘I even move furniture in hotel rooms.’

The atmosphere at Sega na Leqa is a bewitching synthesis of Western comfort and Eastern mystery. ‘We wanted the influence of Asia, combined with the best of contemporary space,’ David explains. A table displaying orange-red Burmese lacquerware greets visitors in the foyer. Anchoring the large living rook, which Tony Chi dubbed ‘the great hall’ (‘It sounds very lofty, but that’s what we’ve ended up calling it,’ Jill says with a laugh), are choice pieces from the couple’s collection, notably a carved-wood head of Buddha with a seraphic smile on its lips crafted in Burma centuries ago. Of a pair of graceful hand fragments standing nearby, Jill says: ‘Those are Thai, lopped off some gorgeous Buddha, probably. And the table they sit on is a kang bed from China.’ A pair of charming miniature horses mounted on wheels were made for an Indian maharaja and found by one of David’s sisters. And ancientEgyptian artifacts line the shelves of the library-office the Gilmours share, including an arresting pair of eyes rimmed with copper.

‘I just walked around staring at everything,’ says the former Paramount Pictures CEO turned cancer activist Sherry Lansing. She and her husband, Oscar-winning director William Friedkin, were among Sega na Leqa’s first guests. ‘Looking through those windows at the ocean makes you feel you are floating. David and Jill’s place is one of the most beautiful houses I’ve ever seen. It’s paradise on earth.’ Words like that bring a grin to David’s face. “You sort of give up after a while, thinking you’ll never find the perfect combination,” he explains. ‘But Sega na Leqa is totally satisfying, I wouldn’t change a thing. This is the ultimate home.’ Maybe four months a year isn’t going to be nearly enough. 194 Bridge for Design Summer 2015
