Editor’s Letter Dear reader, what can I say - it’s 20 years since the Diary first came through your door and it’s still going. Phew - I’m more amazed than anything that I’ve stayed the course, I seem to have passed the mid-lifecrisis without a hitch. Running a magazine is an odd thing, the year is punctuated by magazine issues and I can say that the years literally fly by as you work to each deadline. The Sidmouth and Budleigh Diary magazines were started in 1995 - also the year I got married, so for me it was a fairly busy and significant year all round.
Oxfordshire and then Lincolnshire before moving back to Devon with his wife Angela and buying Higher Barnes in 1982 to start the pottery where Vaughan helped many children to make their first pot. He also served as Tree Warden for Ottery - driving past Knightstone Corner towards Ottery St Mary, someone has kindly tied yellow ribbons on the roadside oaks that Vaughan had planted. I met Vaughan about 5 years ago whilst delivering our Devonshire magazine to the pottery. He was a thoroughly friendly, likeable chap, I’m sure he’ll be missed by many.
What’s I find quite amazing is how we still have five businesses with us since the very first issue of each magazine - and they’ve been with us for each and every one of the 20 years! We take a look at these solid local businesses further on in the magazine - they also must be doing something right to be here 20 years later.
Over the coming issues we’ll be looking back at some of the content from early Diary magazines and one of the long-term projects we have lined up here is to catalogue much of our content, particularly where it has a local historical value. This will be added to the new website that we’re starting work on shortly. (Incidentally, there’ll be dedicated and detailed What’s On information for both communities fed via our EastDevonHub website.
Sad news recently, Vaughan Glanville from Ark Pottery at Wiggaton has passed away after a battle with cancer. Born in Ottery, he taught art in

Sidmouth Town Band - a Sidmouth Institution For over 150 years Sidmouth has had its own band. The intention to start the band was first announced in the local papers in 1862. The band suffered a loss of members due to the devastating First World War, but thankfully recovered and continues to this day, often playing at Connaught Gardens - one of the highlights of the summer. Any town worth calling a town has to have its own band - Jon Ingles.

Cec Hardy’s lighthearted take on life blue? Why do they even make pens with blue ink anyway when many forms insist on black? Who actually chooses blue ink? But let’s return to casting clouts or not. My dedicated research has revealed that in this case the word ‘clout’ refers to an article of clothing rather than the sharp blow some folk might be tempted to inflict upon their computer.
Clout Casting Time? by Cec Hardy
‘Ne’er cast a clout till May be out’ is the well known saying I always bear in mind at this time of year. Many people of a certain age still swear by this old English adage but it has certain flaws. Some claim it refers to the month itself and others to some sort of hawthorn bush which flowers in late April or early May. So how are you expected to know when to commence clout casting? Does it depend upon whether you live in Devon or just south of Hadrian's Wall? Has global warming made the whole idea redundant? What is a clout anyway? These are the sort of questions I often ask myself. Sometimes I also ask Wife Christine in a rhetorical sort of fashion, at which point she generally verbally or physically throws something. I point out that we’d still be living like cavepersons if some of us weren’t curious. She maintains I look the part. The weather has always puzzled me. So have a multitude of other things. Why is it that I always buy ballpoint pens with black ink yet every time I pick up a pen the writing comes out

How can you decide when it’s safe to divest? January and February are obviously out of the question but some regard 1st March as the onset of spring. Much too early in my book though I might be prepared to consider dispensing with gloves and/ or scarf which possibly don’t qualify as clouts but are classed as optional extras. Three weeks later comes the spring equinox closely followed by British Summer Time, often the cue for torrential rain, gales, sleet and/or snow and quite possibly hailstones the size of cricket balls and for Wife Christine to have difficulty getting up in the morning when the clocks go forward. She blames jet lag. These days you can’t rely upon the animal kingdom for guidance since birds are said to be nesting earlier, flowers bloom all year round and squirrels don’t bother hibernating anymore. So I usually decide it’s spring when I no longer discover fresh mouse droppings in the garage. I do think 2nd February is a tad too early to even contemplate spring but that’s the date when Groundhog Day is celebrated in the USA. The largest such event takes place in Pennsylvania, which I believe is right up in the
northeast corner. From my limited knowledge I’d hazard a guess that winters there are much colder than ours so I’m surprised that any self respecting groundhog would venture from its warm burrow, but apparently it does. If it’s cloudy when it comes out then it’s supposed to indicate an early spring but if the sun’s out and it sees its shadow it will quickly return home and there will be another six weeks of winter weather. Confused? Me too. Unfortunately the groundhog seems to be one of the few species that don’t frequent our garden. This year, however, I had a stroke of luck. As I mentioned in the last issue the gerbil was hibernating in the loud end of WC's saxophone. As she’s had the dreaded lurgi she has not been tooting on the thing for quite some time so I decided to set up a gerbil detection camera to record its emergence. Towards the end of March her coughing and spluttering were abating and I feared she might soon pick up the instrument again. Urgent measures were called for so I carefully carried the instrument into the garden and placed a bowl of pungent smelling Gerbychunks, its favourite, just outside the noise exit. I can report that the drowsy creature staggered forth blinking in the sunlight on the morning of April 1st. Which meant we could enjoy six more weeks of winter weather. Spooky or what? I’m not superstitious but I didn’t want to risk the gerbil being correct. I shall not be casting anything before 14th May. The six weeks should expire on the 13th but that would be pushing my luck. And I’m certainly not risking a haircut before June be out. - Cec

FUN & GAMES Fun and games seem to be played by the children of today sitting down, usually in front of computer screens, playing expensive games served up to fi ll their young minds. As a boy, life was far different for me. My family was comparatively well off as the saying goes, but my parents expected us to make our own fun. Our fun and games were therefore only limited by our imagination. Our pastimes, as they were sometimes called, varied according to the season. The summer holidays would see us boys making our go-carts. Any and all spare pieces of wood and metal were pressed into service. The yard at the back of the fish and chip shop was always goodpickings. The wheels were more difficult to acquire, pram wheels of course were best, especially for the back as this gave the coveted dragster effect. I once made a go-cart entirely out of old fish boxes and roller-skates, sad to say I ended up in a ditch when one of the roller-skates fell off while negotiating a particularly tricky bend.

The winter, of course, was very different when I was a boy, they were much colder. Crisp, nosetingling days were a certainty as a precursor of what we hoped would be mountains of snow. Then it came, small specks at fi rst, then slightly bigger, until the sky was fi lled with a million large puffs of white delight. Every boy and girl in those days worth their salt had a snow sledge or at least something to slide down the fields or banks on. provider to see if they were insured. Losing connection with everybody on the planet had the exact opposite effect on me. I found it liberating to suddenly live the way we all used to, and it was somehow comforting to know that my world didn t just fall apart in a few seconds as the TV ads promised. The situation got even more interesting when later on my insurers refused to cough up the readies as, you guessed it, I hadn't read the small print properly and little phoney could only be replaced if I was mugged, or the contract terminated if I happened to drop dead, unexpectedly. I always like corporate logic, don t you, after all who drops dead expectedly! So eventually, in exasperation, I was reduced to extricating my beloved water-logged mobile from the said loo before someone used it for more conventional purposes, by dragging it up the inside of the bowl with the hook end of the toilet duck and trying to dry it out in the sun, in the vain attempt that modern technology would prevail over the elements. n June 1954, sixty-eight year old Miss Maud Elizabeth Sanders Stephens of Stedcombe Manor in Axmouth, relying on the word of an English Kind who died nearly 900 years ago, challenged the legality of the Magna Carta and won. Magna Carta signed at Runnemede by King John in 1215 says that any Englishman can fish in tidal waters, even the Crown cannot give the sole fishing rights to anyone.
In the Chancery Division, the case of the legal limit to fishing in the mouth of the River Axe, 'Stephens vs Snell and others' was before My Justice Vaisey. His Lordship gave judgement for the plaintiff Miss Maud Sanders Stephens against four Seaton fishermen who were fishing at the mouth of the River Axe with a boat and some nets for salmon. The River Axe in 2013
He declared that her fishery in the waters of the River Axe extended seaward as far as the mean low watermark, although that fluctuated from time to time. In a former action against a Seaton fisherman in 1939 it was proved and accepted that the fishery was granted to a certain Abbey in Normandy in 1100 before the date of Magna Carta and also Stedcombe Manor was given the 'sole right and several fishery' by King Henry I died who died 1135 and the right was given before Magna Carta. In this 1954 action it was not in dispute that she was the owner of the manor and fishery in fee simple, it was held in the 1939 action that the limits of the fi shery were determined by

the bounds of the manor of Axmouth which belonged to the plaintiff, Miss Stephens had brought an action alleging trespass against four Seaton fi shermen and they gave undertaking not to trespass again. Counsel said the salmon were running at this time of year and unless the injunctions were made effective fish going up stream to spawn were being caught. Miss Stephens said "My family took the manor 60 years ago but the fishing rights are not with any particular family, they are vested in the manor itself, as long as I am here I intend to look after the river. The Championship Section consists of the top bands in the country, followed by bands in the First, Second, Third and Fourth Sections. Since the appointment of the band’s Musical Director Adrian Harvey in 1998, the band has seen steady progression and has risen from the Fourth Section to the Second Section. In that time we have also been to the National Finals three times, competing against bands all over Great Britain. The band consists of around 30 players from Sidmouth, East Devon and some from as far afield as Okehampton and Kingskerswell. Hamilton Garage have been part of the Sid Valley for a very long time. MD Richard Hooper tells me that there's been a garage on this site for many years, at one point in the past there was a Vauxhall dealership and also a BMW dealership. What's amazing looking at the photo above is how many of the staff have long service with the company - it really does back up what I say about the friendliness that's evident at this local business. Richard Hooper tells me that through the years they've built up many loyal customers that come
back time and time again. I personally think that Nissan have a great range of cars at the moment (Qashqai and the Juke in particular) and it's great to think they're all made in the UK. Richard Hooper told me that Hamilton Garage is one of the longest standing Nissan dealerships in the country. You may remember that Nissan used to be called Datsun, the importers at the time being Caldene Motors at Burnt Tree, Tipton, West Midlands. My father used to have his factory unit just down from Caldene Motors, and as an apprentice, I can still remember walking past the showroom on the way to fetch the breaktime chocolate bars (in the glorious 1970s). Tipton literally was a tip in those days. They're a great bunch of people at Hamilton and it only remains for me to thanks to them for supporting the Diary community magazines over the past 20 years. Simon's a born-and-bred Salterton chap and his main hobby is model railways these days. Of course, I had to ask Simon why he'd been in The Budleigh Diary continuously for so long - he commented 'it's worked really well for me over the last 20 years'. Simon has grown the business he

Harcombe Valley Care I met Christine 20 years ago, pretty much the same time I started the Sidmouth Diary, when Christine had also setup her own business. Christine originally established Harcombe Valley Care with a partner, but the partner decided that the ‘care’ business was not for him, so she bought him out! The rest is history as they say. A whole 20 years later Christine still runs the business, but now with both of her daughters, Dawn and Heather. Christine’s one of those naturally kind and charming characters that you can’t help but take an instant liking

I
t is all the rage to talk of the vagaries of climate but such variations have a great effect on the well being of animals. This winter we had an excess of rain. One of the results of this is to flush out the drains in gutters and roadsides bringing out diseases associated with rodents, and who are the first recipients of this, but dogs and cats with their delight at close sniffing everywhere they can. I always noticed that after heavy rains there was a surge in Leptospiral diseases, mainly affecting the kidneys. Some of these can affect humans. In fact my mother died of one, Weill’s disease, back in 1933. Wet weather in Summer produces lush grass which results in profuse

diarrhoea in cattle and made a walk down an oldfashioned cowshed a hazardous procedure, which is why a vet often wears a heavy waterproof on a summer’s day. A hot dry summer also has it’s downside for animals, for when the grass is short, farm animals will be tempted by unsuitable food. I remember a farm in Metcombe where a feeding herd of young calves, short of grass, were tempted by a bumper fall of acorns. The farmer thought it was great until they started to die. There was little I could do apart from an occasional heroic operation to manually remove

I well remember the despair of this farmer, a Charlie Chaplin of a man who wore various parts of a pin-stripe suit and would don a celluloid collar to greet visitors, even with it’s devilish studs front and back. I always wished I could have done more for him. A spate of wet weather in Spring or Autumn brings out the ticks, and then watch out for the many diseases they vector, some dangerous to man. The West Country, together with parts of Scotland, was the only place where cattle suffer from a tick borne disease known locally as Red Water. Rarely fatal, it caused a drastic fall in milk production, so we were called in for treatment.

Another hazard in which the West Country excelled was poisonous snakes, the Adder. Although quite harmless in general, hot weather would bring them out to bask. Dogs, with their insatiable curiosity, were the main victims. Bites were usually on the face and feet, which would swell up alarmingly and death was common. I like to think I rarely lost a patient but it was, like the treatment for hyperthermia, all systems go. From excising the point of bite, to administering anti-venum serum, which I always stocked despite it’s eye-watering cost, to other medication and lots of strong coffee poured down the poor dog’s throat plus all efforts to keep it awake. On more than one occasion, Plymouth hospital even borrowed my serum for human use.

For sheer theatrical drama, you could not beat that moment when two weather fronts collided and produced lightening. Farm animals, in their exposed position in the field and their predilection for standing under trees or gathering round metal feeding troughs, often suffered. Fierce thunderstorms would produce a rash of farmers sure that their latest cattle, sheep or even pig, had been struck by lightening. This was to their advantage as the insurers paid up more readily for such deaths. Diplomacy was needed if the body showed no evidence for this. For the signs were unusually clear, as the power of the strike left a typical mark on the hide of the casualty. I was once called to an incident near Ottery St. Mary where cows had gathered around a metal feeding trough during a storm. Three were dead, and one of them

As an example of the superior sensitivity of animals, I remember the day when as I walked across my garden with my Border Terrier at my side and a thunderbolt struck the field beside my garden. I felt the shock but my dog jumped a clear foot of the ground and for the rest of the afternoon would not leave my side, even to the extent of sitting on my feet when ever she could.

Sidmouth People My Story - Matt Booth

I moved to Sidmouth from Bristol with my daughter in 2005 to take up a post at Dartington College of Arts that lead me to working with a range of great individuals and organisations in the arts and public sector across Devon. I am still on the Devon County Music Education Board. I adore Sidmouth and since moving here have been passionate about the town, its range of small businesses, the surrounding landscape where I regularly walk my dog, and the strong network of friends that I have built up. I had originally thought I might stay only until my daughter, who graduated from university last year, left home, but unsurprisingly I can not now see myself leaving the town nor moving inland and away from the sea. On the contrary, I immersed myself fully in developments in Sidmouth, and in 2012 I led the campaign to stop the demolition of Sidmouth Drill Hall at the far eastern end of the seafront. I co-founded Sidmouth Drill Hall Hub that continues to campaign to reopen

the building for community use. My work takes me across Northern Europe where I see many examples of how responsibly lead regeneration from within the community, and community ownership of its heritage and future backed by a strong local authority can transform a town over time and provide real benefits to local businesses, residents and visitors. For me, the Drill Hall in Sidmouth represents that heritage and that future and a fantastic opportunity to create a landmark development for us all. In 2014 we started Sidmouth Sea Fest, an event that celebrates all things in, on and from the sea and is committed to rediscovering the fishing heritage of Sidmouth through Sidmouth food, music, arts and education. The event this year on 1st and 2nd May will be our second year and I look forward to many more to come.
