SIDMOUTH DIARY MAR & APR 2015
Dear reader, the sap is rising and all’s well with the World. It’s a great time of year - the cold winter months recede and we can look forward to blackthorn, daffodils, bluebells, mayflower, and the distant, hazy drone of lawnmowers echoing across the valley. This issue sees us taking a look at Sidmouth Arts Club Operatic Society and for our Sidmouth People piece, we talk to Peter Martin. Clubs, Societies, Charities and local organisations - if you wish to get your events into the next Sidmouth Diary, add your events into the eastdevonhub website. You can reach the entire local population free, as this Diary goes through every letterbox in this area. These days, I like think we’re all Sid Valley-economy centric in our mindset. However, I did have cause to wonder after reading ‘letters’ in the local rag (I say local - owned by one of the UK’s largest publishers), I came across a ‘valley’ resident extolling the virtues of the chains, suggesting Sidmouth needs more of them down our High Street. What this person clearly and shamefully failed to appreciate is the sheer effort the myriad small businesses put into Sidmouth’s unique town centre. I often
see the ‘chain’ coffee shop’s supply lorry unboxing ‘stock’ brought in from some distant, centralised production factory. Contrast this with the small, independent coffee shops/eateries, sourcing local food from local farms, employing local people and generally helping contribute to our local economy. Not forgetting of course, how much tastier ‘proper’ food is. Horse troughs full of coffee, whipped cream and fatty, sugary, cellophane-wrapped factory cakes don’t float my boat - I hope they don’t yours reader? May I suggest the person penning the aforesaid letter knows what they can do with their ‘chain’ wish - pull it! (just dawned on me, post 80s folk probably won’t even understand what ‘chain pulling’ relates to? ). Last year, The Diary instigated and designed a scheme called “Shop Local” - to garner support and raise awareness of the independent shops and businesses in Sidmouth (you’ve probably seen the green and black posters in shop windows). Please, can we keep Sidmouth independent, unique, interesting and also the money we spend, working here, not in some distant shareholder’s/franchisee’s pocket? Yours - J. Ingles
1st Sid Vale Scounts - A Great Community Cause The last issue of The Sidmouth Diary saw us feature the 1st Sid Vale Scouts, who’re currently raising money to fund the new scout headquartes and faciliy at Salcombe Regis. The work they do is great, building a real sense of community in our youngsters and creating great memories, also building confidence. They’re currently looking for sponsors - can I heartily recommend them if you’re looking to support a great local cause - Jon Ingles.

Cec Hardy’s lighthearted take on life
A Certain Age by Cec Hardy
Those with a long memory might recall the January issue in which I resolved to hang up my mouse. A premature retirement, perhaps, for at least three people have since begged me to carry on writing and who am I to deprive them of their reading pleasure? So the good people of Sidmouth, Budleigh and surrounding villages * can breathe a collective sigh of relief. Although I’m a trifle miffed at the postponement of my leaving party at the Frog & Hosepipe it’s worth it for the opportunity to spill the beans about a certain person’s even less successful New Year resolution. Wife Christine had sworn to stop hurling insults at the computer and even adopted one of my redundant piggy banks as a swear box. Luckily for her the contents of the box were sufficient to cover the repair bill when she finally lost patience and turned violent. I’ve cautiously suggested that should she reach boiling point again it would be cheaper to take the hammer to the poor piggy instead. As a form of relaxation therapy she has taken up the saxophone. It’s quite loud. MAR & APR 15
I suggested muffling it with a sock but the gerbil beat me to it. Christine couldn’t play for a couple of weeks because of a tooth problem and when she next picked up the instrument she discovered a hibernating gerbil in the end where the noise comes out. Being an animal lover she wouldn’t want to deafen the little chap so we won’t be hearing those dulcet tones again until spring. Then again I’m not entirely sure the gerbil isn’t deaf anyway for it never comes when I whistle it. The only way to get it back into its cage is to lay a trial of gerbil sweeties up to the cage door. Seems to work with saxophones too - hope it ate all the evidence before it fell asleep. As one of those fortunate baby boomers I actually reached state pension age three years ago and qualified for bus pass and winter fuel allowance at 60. Senior Citizens are often given discounts on cinema, theatre tickets and such like but nobody seems quite sure of the exact definition nowadays. If 60 is the new 40, like they keep saying, how do the venues decide whether you are eligible? Is it how you look, how you act or how honest you are? So there I was basking in the warmth of a winter fuel allowance when I received notification that it was to be halved since there was another person living in the household. I suspected a ghost or some mysterious lodger secreted in the attic but then Wife Christine confessed that she too had been notified and was entitled to half the payment since she had now reached the magic age of **. I shall have to see about getting some sort of meter to ensure my fair share.
She has been known to describe me as a ‘miserable old sod’. After my 68th birthday last month I thought it was probably time to act like one. So I shall now start every sentence with ‘when I was a lad’, generally followed by how things were much better/cheaper/ simpler and there were fewer squirrels about. Being now of an age when I can call myself a Senior Citizen with a clear conscience I feel entitled to tell young people what they missed out on. I can confuse them with tales of going to the cinema, having a choc ice and then a bag of chips wrapped in newspaper on the way home and all for one shilling. Mind you, they’re probably listening to music through their earplugs anyway. From now on I shall correspond to the stereotype of a 68 year old even if it is only 45 (?) in new money. Are you three quite sure you want me to continue writing? GETTING SLAUGHTERED I have always found autumn such a leisurely time of year and I like nothing better than to go picking apples in one of the many orchards dotted around our beautiful Devon countryside. One can make so many delectable creations from the humble apple; from juice to chutney or if all else fails perhaps a drop of scrumpy. It was on one of these apple forays a few years ago, coming back from time well spent in an orchard at the back of Ottery St. Mary that myself and a friend interestingly called Rob, happened upon a farm selling sacks of potatoes at seriously cheap prices. Now I have never been one to turn down proper food at supermarket prices so we decided to split the sack between us and stick it in the back of our motor. We turned down the farm lane and eventually found ourselves outside an old barn with potato sacks lying against its cob wall already for collection. Walking up to the farm door, we saw some strange drag marks going right to where the door opened. We knocked on the great cast iron knocker and pressed the bell but all to no avail; so hearing

voices I looked in the kitchen window and witnessed a sight I will never forget to my dying day. An old man had hold of a dead bull calf's head, with the rest of the animal lying flat out on a huge pine table. His extended family were in various stages of chopping the animal into usable joints and packing them into sealed plastic bags. I watched the grisly scene for some time until I was spotted by a young woman in a white apron that was liberally bespattered in blood. She instantly screamed and another man in a check shirt ran over to the window and hurriedly threw the curtains across. Rob commented that he didn’t realise that buying potatoes with me could be so exciting. The next thing we knew the front door opened wide as if by itself and the man in the check shirt's face appeared on its own as if suspended in space and time around the door. He seemed to visibly choke as he asked us what we wanted. We explained that some potatoes
and a few eggs would be nice and his countenance improved visibly. Then he disappeared again as he said that he had to wash his hand first. We waited for a few more minutes and heard muffled voices coming from the kitchen until the man reappeared wearing an old tweed jacket and asked us how many eggs we would like. We took a dozen each and our sack of potatoes and put them in the back of the car. Turning round to pay the farmer, Rob and me looked at each other as he had vanished into thin air and after a quick look round some of the other barns was nowhere to be found. We eventually knocked on the front door again and this time the old man came to the door and asked us what we wanted. We told him we hadn’t paid for the eggs and potatoes The old man rubbed his chin for a moment and then said "just give us a couple of quid sur". FCR Esgen C2015

Shipwrecks
The Berar on the rocks 1896
A
n estimation of wrecks along the Devon coast is difficult, records and names are often confused but there is little doubt that more ships are found off East Devon than are recorded.
from Torquay, calling on its way at Sidmouth, Seaton and Lyme Regis. Although these towns had no pier, passengers got ashore via a small bridge thrown out to the beach from the boat.
The Berar was an Italian three-masted barque which ran ashore on the rocks near Rousden. She was laden with about 1,200 tons of planking. The ship soon broke up and the load of timber was scattered all along the shore. No loss of life occurred but the crew suffered terrible hardships and privations. The figurehead of the Berar can be seen in Seaton Museum.
In 1934 the Duchess was wrecked at Sidmouth, having got into difficulties because of a heavy swell and came into Sidmouth beach broadsides. All the passengers were taken off safely but the old and faithful steamer was dismantled where she lay.
Another ship wrecked on Seaton beach during a storm in February 1922 was the Malpas Belle, a Polish registered barque laden with iron ore, here again fortunately, no lives were lost. The pleasure steamer the Duchess of Devonshire conveyed passengers to Bournemouth and Weymouth

Local historian Ted Gosling looks back in time
In 1992 when most of the shingle was swept away and scoured down to bedrock along the main sea front, and again the keel and rudder of the old steamer were uncovered. The Grindon Hall was another vessel wrecked off Sidmouth beach. It was on Friday 3rd of November 1916 the Grindon Hall (2,360 tons) bound from France to Barry Docks encountered terrible weather and ended up drifting helplessly off Sidmouth at the eastern end of the town near the shore. Volunteers were asked to help Stephen Reynolds to rescue the crew. First to communicate with the ships captain Brewis were H. Burgess, W.Yeo and others. It was hoped to lower a rope down the cliff to the beach but, owing to the violence of the wind, it had to be abandoned. A Mr Bunner carried a rope over the river and the crew left the ship and landed on the beach. They were saved with the help of Messers Skinner, Haselock, J.Hayman, W.J.Govier, A.L.Smith, W.Turner, A.C.Drewe, Tom and Bob Wooley, T.P.Syres, H.Spencer,
F.Russell, T.Smith, W.Hook, W.Ware, T.W.Harris, W.Yeo, D.Hook and J.Tapley. Vessels such as the 73 ton schooner the Friends and the brigantine Julia were wrecked off Exmouth but the most spectacular ship wreck was the MSC Napoli, a United Kingdom flagged container ship. On January 19th 2007, the ship was taken under tow by the salvage tug Abeille Bourbon to be towed to Portland harbour from off the coast of the Lizard following gale damage. Unable to reach Portland, the Napoli was beached at Branscombe. After containers from the wreck began washing up at Branscombe, around two hundred people went onto the beach to scavenge goods which included new BMW motorcycles. A salvage free-for-all followed until the police closed the beach. The wrecked Napoli became a much photographed subject until mid summer 2009 when she was finally removed.

Freedoms and Responsibilities
T
he new pension freedoms planned for April will provide unprecedented freedom to choose how and when to take benefits. There will be much fewer restrictions on how to take benefits and there is no requirement to buy an annuity. The abolition of the high 55% tax charge on death also means that beneficiaries look set to inherit more. Although there will still be a death tax charge on pension pots for those over 75. The new freedoms however will inevitably bring a few problems. Firstly, A recent sur vey conducted by the International Longevity Centre found that almost 70% of respondents aged 55 - 70 actually favoured guaranteed incomes over ones that rise and fall. The survey also found that many people hadn't planned towards their retirement

I think the first observation is that the press and the media have demonised annuities, however, for a considerable number of people an annuity might still be the most suitable product. This is particularly true if you have a low risk threshold, a limited amount of assets and limited income sources. For many people, just the security of a guaranteed income for life is the most important factor and they don't want to contemplate the prospect of running out of income in their later years. It's important to remember that every individual has different requirements and that press comment doesn't necessarily mean that an annuity is no longer suitable. Depending on your circumstances it may still be the

most suitable choice for many as evidenced in the survey results.
With these new changes it is surprising that people still don't undertake any planning and aren't looking to get professional advice. We believe that this is a very important and now very complex area of planning and therefore experienced, professional advice is important especially if you have built up a large pension pot. The new pension freedoms (available from April 2015) mean that you can effectively access all your pension pot. However, there are some important issues to consider. Firstly, those who chose to take their benefits early and access all the pot

may need to think about how long they will need this income. Life expectancy is high and increasing and therefore your pension will need to work very hard to provide for you. Metering out pension pots to ensure a financially secure retirement requires astute long term planning. Even those with large pension pots may find that annuities have some place in their planning. The need for professional advice has never been higher. Whatever stage of your working life that you've reached it is good practice to keep your pension plan under regular review and ensure that you keep contributing to your pension. April 2015 changes • Flexible access to pensions from age 55 (this will rise to 57 from 2028) • You will be able to receive 25% of the fund tax free but you won't have to take it in full at outset • Pension drawdown restrictions relaxed • Unfunded public sector schemes, for example, nurses, teachers and the police force are not allowed to transfer. • Death benefits can be paid to beneficiaries not just dependants and will be tax free on death before age 75 • Death benefits after age 75 will be subject to 45% if paid as a lump sum and then the beneficiary's marginal rate from 2016/17 • Withdrawals from drawdown plans (after tax free cash of 25%) are be subject to the policyholder's marginal tax rate Please contact Helen Mulvaney of Richmond Independent (01395 512166) for independent financial advice on pensions. Sidmouth People My Story - Peter Martin
Peter with his dog, Stitch While I grew up in Cirencester in Gloucestershire, Sidmouth has always been a special place to me. I first came to know the town as a boy, when I’d spend the school holidays staying with my grandparents in Exmouth. My grandfather would drive us to Sidmouth for a day out, gently edging his car through the ford before heading up the hill to visit the observatory. With a zoologist and an entemologist for parents, and a house full of pets to care for including dogs, tropical fish and stick insects (not to mention a pond full of frogs and newts!), my interest in science and animals grew ever stronger, and by my teenage years I was brimming with determination to become a vet. When the holidays came round again, I’d take a break from studying for the all-important A-level exams to stay with my grandparents once again – this time, grandad would drop me off at the Donkey Sanctuary, where I’d spend the day with the veterinary team, dashing about the picturesque East Devon lanes to reach the next donkey in-need. All that work experience paid off as I won a place at Bristol University’s vet school. Five years of hard study followed – the time that wasn’t spent concentrating on lectures was spent wading through muddy farm yards or learning the ropes in a busy intensive care unit! Vet school is a remarkable time in life for every vet – you emerge with the key to a wonderfully exciting career and some of the best friends you’ll ever have, not least Stitch, the cheeky little whippet x terrier whom I found at a rescue centre in Somerset and has been with me ever since.
My veterinary career began in a mixed practice in Cornwall, seeing all sorts of animal from cats and dogs to dairy cows and racehorses. I enjoyed the outdoor work visiting farms and stables, but it was working with pets that I really fell in love with – it’s an amazing privelege and repsonsibility to care for an animal that means so much to someone. Next came an adventure in India, working as head vet for two street-dog charities in Kerala. India is a beautiful country but animals have a tough and dangerous life there. You can only scratch the surface of the huge animal welfare problems – but to the individual dogs I treated, I made all the difference, and thanks to a few caring and compassionate people, the nation’s attitude to animals is slowly changing for the better. I returned to the UK in the freezing winter of 2010, and as I was now working around Exeter and Honiton, where better to live than that beautiful seaside town that grandad had introduced me to all those years ago? Paddling my kayak along the Jurassic Coast a few months later, an idea popped in to my head: a new veterinary practice for Sidmouth, dedicated to pets - why not call it Jurassic Vets? Four years of careful planning culminated in us opening our doors in May 2014 and we’ve been getting busier ever since. Sidmouth has been incredibly kind to me – every day I’m grateful to live in such a beautiful town and work alongside such friendly and optimistic people.

The Commander
I
always referred to him as The Commander but in truth I never knew his actual rank. It was so natural to imagine him, short of stature, but long in gravitas, strutting across the bridge of some naval ship. I saw quite a lot of him and his wife because they bred King Charles Spaniels. They were a pleasant pair and I got on well with them and they seemed to be living an idyllic retirement. Then tragedy struck. His wife developed a form of dementia, a particularly unpleasant type whereby she became aggressive, both verbally and physically. Apart from attacking him she would repeatedly accuse him of various
misdemeanours. After about a year of this she died. One hesitates to say it, but there must have been some relief on the part of the Commander and his two grown up sons, each with his own family. To help with the funeral arrangements a family relative of his wife arrived from Canada. She and the Commander got on very well and the upshot was that he went back with her to Canada to live. A happy ending. Well the sons did not thing so, for there went their inheritance, I never felt so comfortable with either of them as I did with their father. The elder on the two

PET CARE seemed to have too much of his mother’s aggression, which resulted in an unpleasant episode. He did not come often to my surgery but one day he and his wife came in and placed their dog on my table. They obviously had a great difference of opinion which they continued to air in my surgery. His wife was really letting off steam, until he finally shouted, “shut up”. This seemed to have no effect so he just smacked her round the face. Well I usually made a point of keeping out of family arguments but at this I had to say, “steady on. I am not having any of that in here”. I cannot recall the consultation nor seeing much of them as clients after that. Nor was I sorry about that to tell the truth. In my work I saw quite a bit of domestic abuse, but that is a story for another day.

The younger brother was a different proposition. Much more approachable. He was one of those selfbuild DIY’ers whose house renovation meant they lived in an ambience of half-built walls and building supplies stacked in the garden. At least this was so continued overleaf

Soon they had four lovely daughters, and the chaotic house filled with dogs, cats, birds, hamsters, guinea pigs, gerbils; you name it they had it, and they were all well looked after. As you can imagine I was a frequent visitor to this menagerie. There was only one cloud in their happiness. Daughter number four, the youngest, was autistic. Yet they took this misfortune in their stride and it was a happy house, for she was cherished.
