Flying the flag for Devon You must have noticed the major change on the cover of the magazine. After 5 years of COAST & COUNTRY, we've decided to make a name move to The DEVONSHIRE magazine. It's hasn't been an easy change to make, but there were several important reasons. Firstly, it was amazing how many people we spoke to who'd say Coast & County, Town & Country, County & Country, I think we've heard just about every permutation possible, which told us that a change was due. Secondly, we have by far the biggest glossy magazine coverage for a Devon county magazine with over 1,000 outlets receiving 20,000 magazines each issue. One day in the office, Charlotte, our production manager, spouted 'what about Devonshire magazine' which seemed to fit the bill perfectly, so here we now are proudly bearing the Devonshire name and you may have also noticed we display the Devon flag which came into being in 2003, having been designed by student Ryan Sealey. Incidentally, we are totally open and honest about our magazine coverage - every one of our 1,000 outlets

is visible on a freely accessible Google map. For those interested, we also have a print certificate to verify our circulation. We're also working with a couple of local charities to audit magazine quantities when they're received in store, again to verify quantities. No other magazine within the county goes to these lengths or is as transparent! We're well aware how popular the magazine has become, getting many calls asking where a copy can be picked up because stock disappears so quickly. Our subscription list includes New Zealand as our most distant delivery address which is mind boggling, the post cost per issue is about £7.50 alone! Magazine developments - in the immediate future we're bringing out a North Devon version of the Devonshire magazine. The feedback from businesses to a new North Devon magazine has been highly favourable, we'll keep you posted. This issue sees a visit to glorious Exmouth, with particular emphasis on the estuary, waterside and the floating river Exe Café. I first discovered the Café whilst kayaking up the estuary, it's the sort of place you expect steel drums being played - there's a real holiday atmosphere, it's truly great. Thankfully the weather so far this year has been lovely, let's hope it continues to the end of the main holidays. I shall be getting out in the kayak, having a few estuaries on my list to navigate. We're just so lucky living in Devon, tourists pay to come here on holiday but we live here - how brilliant is that! In the spring of 2014 the Law Commission recommended that the Government introduce a clearer system which might encourage greater use. The idea is that sensible agreements could save couples a great deal of upset and cost if they later separate. No changes to the current law have been made as yet. However if the couple enter into a sensible agreement and can show they have entered into the agreement through an open process with the benefit of legal advice, then they should be binding if the couple later separate.
What is a Prenuptial Agreement?
A Prenuptial Agreement is an agreement between a couple, before marriage, which intends to regulate what is to happen about property and finances if they separate.
Why are Prenuptial Agreements becoming more popular?
Statistics also show that the average age to marry is getting older. They also show an increase in the average age when couples divorce. Many of those who Divorce or become widowed will also contemplate remarriage. Either way, people are increasingly getting married or remarried when they may have already had
They are not romantic, but they are pragmatic and realistic. Going into a marriage with open eyes does not mean that the marriage is being undermined. You could argue, that by having serious discussions about money in advance of a wedding will mean that a couple have a better sense of the strength of their relationship and better understanding of each other’s attitudes toward money. Perhaps those are ingredients for a more durable and successful union?
Are Prenuptial Agreements enforceable?
The Law of Divorce means that any agreement between the couple is not binding until it has been approved by a Court. The Court has discretion and the Judge needs to be satisfied that the agreement is reasonable. This discretion is to protect the weakest of the couple is from unfairness, and to ensure that the needs of any minor children are also met. This means that there is always a risk that an event may have occurred after the agreement was signed, which would make it unfair if it were to be relied on. At the time of a subsequent divorce a prime example might be the arrival of dependent children. Although Prenuptial Agreements have been popular in other countries, the view of the English Courts was that they could be relevant, but were not binding. Then in 2010 there was a landmark ruling by the Supreme Court on the subject of Prenuptial Agreements which decided that; ‘The court should give effect to a nuptial agreement that is freely entered into by each party with a
It is fundamental that the agreements are entered into in the right way. In a nutshell, the couple need to show; 1. The contracts were entered into freely and voluntarily; 2. Both parties had the benefit of independent, competent legal advice; and 3. Full disclosure was made of all relevant, financial and other circumstances. The way, in which the agreements are drawn up, is just as important as the contents of agreement. There needs to be evidence which can be relied upon later on of a proper process. This means solicitor’s letters showing that both have taken or considered getting legal advice and that financial disclosure has taken place. If a Prenuptial agreement is right for you, it is worth investing the time to get it done properly in order to ensure the best chance of enforceability. A certain amount of legal work is required and a certain amount of cost is involved. If you try to cut corners, you will not find out if you have succeeded until it is too late. You could try to avoid spending a few hundred pounds now and it could cost you thousands, even hundreds of thousands of pounds later. Is it better to build a house of straw or a house of bricks?

Bicton Fest - families welcome Families in Devon and beyond are being encouraged to attend Bicton Collegeʼs annual music festival for a weekend of quality family time before the school year starts again in September. Local Devon photographer Ross Hayward is celebrating the start of his 5th year in business with selection into one of the country’s most prestigious food photography competitions. Ross, who started Well Seasoned PR & Marketing in July 2010, has submitted one of his images (taken at local restaurant ‘The Jack in the Green’) into the Observer Food Monthly’s 2014 “Food Photographer of the Year” competition. inety six years ago this year, the country was celebrating Armistice day. World war one had finished with the defeat of Germany but the cost to Great Britain had been enormous. Although the precise figures of casualties is unknown it is estimated that the total of dead and wounded exceeded 2,500,000.

During that war, the battle of Somme which lasted from June to November 1910 became a symbol of the horrors of the Great War resulting in over a million casualties and proceeded a British total casualty in excess of 400,000 killed with over 600,000 wounded and missing. When Britain’s last Tommy, Harry Patch, was laid to rest five years ago, many viewed his passing as the final chapter in the story of World War 1 and yet even today, commemorations like Remembrance Sunday and TV programmes help to

or abroad and of these, 32 were killed - their names are on the memorial cross by the church entrance. Twenty men from Beer gave their lives for King and Country in the war and a particularly black day for the village was on May 31st 1916 when five young men lost their lives in the Battle of Jutland. During the first months of the war, four men from Sidmouth lost their lives in the first British naval reverse battle. They were serving on board H.M.S Monmouth and were sunk by the German battleship Scharnhorst on November 1st, the entire complement of officers and men went down with the ship.

Another Sidmouth man, John Acland Smith lost his life when his ship the British cruiser H.M.S Hogue was sunk by the German Submarine U.9. commanded by Lieut-Capt Otta Weddingen on September 22nd 1914. Their names
are inscribed with many others on the Sidmouth War Memorial under the shadow of the parish church. In every town and village in Devon, war memorials were erected to remember those who lost their lives.
Allenby G.C. M.G. C.B. He was killed in the Mesopotamia area fighting against the Turks and Bulgars. These men with other men from East Devon made the supreme sacrifice giving their lives fighting for a cause they believed would bring a happier England and a better world.
The Devon War Memorial in the Cathedral Yard, Exeter commemorates the 11,601 Devon men and women killed during the first world war. Although the first world war did not affect East Devon directly, wartime incidents did occur at sea.
Of all the million dead on foreign fields in the first world war, only one unknown soldier was ever returned to his native land. Philip Gibbs of the Daily Chronicle captures the mood of the people when he described the processing of the unknown warrior for interment in Westminster Abbey.
In October 1914 an English merchant ship, the S.S. Oakby of the Ropner Line captained by Francis Bartlett of Beer and with a complete crew of Beer men, most of whom were related, was intercepted by a German U-boat which surfaced and ordered the crew to take to their boats. The submarine then sank the ship by Torpedo much to the fury of Capt Bartlett. O n e o f th e b ig g es t losses was the battleship H.M.S Formidable on 1st January 1915. A prewar Dreadnought, she carried a crew of 790 officers and men. Struck by a torpedo in the early hours of the morning some miles off the Devon coast she sank an hour and a half later owing to the rough seas and intense cold - only about two hundred of her men survived the night. Seaton men who were killed include Second Lt Reginald Wilkie Gosney the son of a Seaton chemist who found himself in France shortly after the outbreak of war. He was on the Indian Army Reserve of officers attached to the 76 Punjabis and in 1915 was transferred to Mesopotamia where he took part in the capture of Kut and the ill-advised advance to Baghdad. After the capture of Kut the British forces with a rifle strength of 13,000, advanced to attack the Turkish position at Ctesiphon. The Turks numbered more then 18000 and after the battle on November 22nd 1915 the British retreated with a loss of more than 4,500 men. Casualties were either left or buried by the Turks with no regard to identification.

William Walter Hooper who was born in 1892 came from an old Seaton family, his grandparents being Rubert Whitemore Hooper and Frances Hooper (née Anning). His uncle was George Henry Barton the Seaton photographer who recorded much of the town’s past. William was a private in the 1st Battalion Dorset Regiment and in 1915 found himself on his way to Ypres, France. Nothing could prepare anybody for the scene at Ypres, it was during the fighting on May 5th 1915 that Pte Hooper was killed. Frank Akerman was one of the Seaton family who founded the local ironmongers business. He joined the Royal Engineers in 1915 and saw service in France. Frank a dispatch
“It did not seem an unknown warrior whose body came on a gun carriage down Whitehall when we were waiting from him. He was known to us all. “It was one of our boys, not warriors, as we called them in the days of darkness lit by faith. “To some women weeping a little in the crowd after an all-night vigil, he was their own boy who went missing and was never found till now. “To many men wearing ribbons, badges and civil clothes, he was a familiar figure, one of their comrades. “It was the steel helmet, the old tin hat, lying there on the crimson of the flag which revealed him instantly, not a mythical warrior aloof from common humanity, a shadowy type of national pride and martial glory, but as one of those fellows dressed in the drop of khaki, stained by mud and grease, who went in to the dirty ditches with this steel hat on his head." In 1939 on the eve of another world war and almost 20 years after the unknown warrior was buried, thousands were still paying their respects at his grave. Tears prick my eyes when I think of these young lads and I sometimes wonder could it be a Seaton, Sidmouth or a Beer boy buried in that unknown warrior grave.
Pte W.G.Oldridge served in the 16th BN of the Devonshire Regiment and on the 23rd October 1917 was mentioned in a despatch from General Sir E.H.

It's very easy in the summer months to forget about the towns of our interior. Axminster's a case in point, great eateries, department store shopping, intimate galleries. River Cottage Canteen is one of Axminster's gems, and on this occasion I'd just visited The Marle Gallery for their Society of Wood Engravers exhibition, followed by lunch at the Canteen. Firstly, the ambiance is great, shabby chic, modern, industrial all combined to give a relaxed feel to your dining.
For drinks, we opted for the Cottage Royal (right). Wow, what a lift, sparkling Cornish elderflower wine combined with three year old Somerset cider brandy and an eau de vie cherry. I don't think I've ever enjoyed a lunchtime drink more, the cherry gives an almost marzipan tone to the flavours and when you finally get to the cherry - bang, it's a real taste explosion. I think in business it's called 'adding value', well this drink concoction ticked every box - and I hadn't even started on the food!

This could be the start of a love affair - just everything you want in a pudding - looks, taste, finesse - ah, mamma mia.
Steamed local asparagus, Rachael goats' cheese, preserved lemon & mint Happily food didn't disappoint, it was all fresh, colourful and flavoursome, a classic example of less-is-more. Steamed asparagus was first on the menu, presented with goats cheese and preserved lemon & mint. An elegant, colourful dish enjoyed with relish. Also caramelised haloumi with beetroot, toasted walnuts, cumin & coriander salad with corn toast was sampled. This was more textural, with bits of crunch here and there, really sweet, tasty beetroot (a much underrated vegetable), rich toasted walnuts. A fine dish, again enjoyed with lashings of the proverbial relish. Great food, so light yet tasty and colourful on the plate.

Listed on Wikipedia as a British celebrity chef, television personality, journalist, food writer and "real food" campaigner, he's attained fame for his TV series on Channel 4. Hugh's certainly been a big asset to the East Devon landscape, helping to reinvigorate the local Axminster scene. We really do need money passing around in our towns and villages, it all feeds in to the local economy. What's great about Hugh is his championing of high quality, local produce, we do need to spend our money at local shops on local produce. 38

I must admit that I left the Canteen on a high, I honestly couldn't fault any single item, even the oil dressing on the asparagus was delicious, light and warm, the coffee just right. Well done to the guys in the kitchen, be assured that your efforts don't go unnoticed. There's a real passion here that just jumps out at you from the plate. SAFE AND HEALTHY by FCR ESGEN Where would we all be without health and safety. How reassuring it is to know that all the things we used to enjoy doing but were bad for us, we are no longer allowed to do. It takes all the stress out of life. In fact we are near the stage now where we don t have to make any decisions at all - they are already made for us. So now we can just spend all our days with our noses to the grindstone
until we retire at 65: oops sorry I meant 85. But, Is it safe to work on till your 85? I hear you cry, as you might get so doddery you might forget to order early breakfast at your residential home so you can catch the 125 inter-city to Swindon. Companies will have to install zimmer parks for those who don t wish to take early retirement and want to work on into their nineties.
Sometimes in quiet moments I think of my poor ancestors who didn t have all the benefits of health and safety and had to make all the tricky decisions in life for themselves. How on earth did they do it. I suppose they had all the burden of having to think things through logically with the use of something

A long overdue visit: The Arundell Arms THE EDITOR VISITS ONE OF ENGLANDS OLDEST AND FINEST GAME FISHING HOTELS
If you’re a keen game fisherman, I’m sure that this veritable fishing institution hasn’t escaped your radar. It was in the early 1920s, with the advent of the motor car that the first fishing adverts appeared. Kelly’s Directory said “there is excellent family and tourist accommodation at the Arundell Arms and Devonshire Fishing Hotel”. Since those early days, the Hotel’s reputation as a fine salmon and trout fishing hotel continued over the decades, and it was in 1961 that the Hotel was bought by the family that continue to run it to this day (one of the Hotel’s illustrious former owners was Major Oscar Morris, a keen fisherman who owned the Ambrosia factory at Lifton - of Ambrosia Rice and Custard fame). The current owners, Adam and Tina Fox-Edwards (see photo), follow on in the footsteps of Anne and
Conrad Voss Bark (Anne was previously Fox-Edwards - Gerald passed away in 1973), continuing the traditions that
have ensured the Hotel’s success. Last year, the Hotel was the only business to win more than 2 awards at the 2013 Visit Devon tourism awards, gaining 2 Golds, Silver and a Bronze. There are a great range of activities for the visitor at the Arundell Arms, not just fishing, although it’s well catered for, with 2 full time fishing guides, who

There’s also clay pigeon shooting, shooting in the winter season (with tuition available), and horse riding, (they can arrange great riding adventure over Dartmoor and also stabling if you wish to bring your steed). Of course, for me, one of the great things about the Arundell Arms is that you can take your dog along - who wants to go on holiday without their best friend, partner excepted of course! If you’re visiting the Arundell Arms for fishing, then there’s sublime Devonshire countryside to enjoy, and the chance to really have your own bit of river for the day. Can there be anything so delightful as wading through sparkling water with the sun

If you have children, there is a great opportunity here to introduce them to pristine countryside, whilst indulging their need to keep busy and be given a new challenge. Generally these days, pretty much all fish caught are released, and the use of small, barbless hooks means they’re released unharmed. The Arundell Arms have some of the best tuition conveniently on hand. Actually, it seems to me that our river valley are the most forgotten part of our rural landscape. It’s a major oversight how this most beautiful and vibrant habitat is so often overlooked and unexplored, particularly by the younger generation. Some of our most spectacular flora and fauna can be seen along the river bank, although for me,

the wily native brown trout is the most beautiful and entertaining species by far. It’s long been understood that fi shermen are the guardians of our rivers, quickly spotting river pollution, with many actively involved with river habitat conservation - we really do need to encourage the younger generation to take up the noble art of fly fishing as this interest helps to protect our river habitats for the future. My visit to the delightful Arundell Arms towards the end of May was the culmination of a lifelong fishing interest. Spanning back over some 40 years and being a fan of Trout and Salmon magazine, I’d frequently seen adverts for the Hotel and was aware of massive involvement by Anne Voss Bark in migratory fish conservation issues, Anne being one of the founding members of the Westcountry Rivers Trust. Our stay at the Arundell Arms was relaxing having a genuinely friendly atmosphere, with a cheerful bar, elegant dining room and cosy lounge. There’s a lovely courtyard at the rear of the Hotel where you can sit and enjoy your coffee by the fountain. Of course, many establishments these days are under pressure to present food to a very high standard and the Arundell doesn’t disappoint. You know how it is if you book into a hotel for a stay and fi nd the food’s lacking, but no problems here thankfully. You really

After sampling the tasting menu, I can happily say that the food is excellent and can wholeheartedly recommend it. As mentioned previously, the Hotel’s dining room is an elegant place to be, making for a totally enjoyable evening. I was sad to leave the Hotel, not having fished the rivers due to torrential rain, but will diary in for a visit later in the year, perhaps to try for their late-season salmon that run in September and October. Incidently, Lifton’s a great base for exploring the surrounding countryside. If you haven’t visited Lydford Gorge, you’ve missed a treat, it’s spectacular and well worth the trip out. We had a most enjoyable and relaxing stay. I’d like to thanks Adam, Tina and team for making us welcome. Ed

Riding Nerves Un f o r t u n ate l y m a ny r i d i n g accidents happen because of a frightened horse, as when a horse is experiencing this emotion its reaction is often unpredictable, i nvo l v i n g sp e e d a n d p o o r impressions of Michael Flatley. We can train horses to minimise their fear or their extreme reactions to fear and this makes them safer to ride and handle but we can’t always train for every eventuality and the temperaments of some horses can also limit our success. Regrettably we ourselves can actually cause a horse to feel nervous and therefore potentially create the problem that we are worrying about in the first place. Most riders have been taught at some time that horses can feel their riders fear and research has now proven this. One study involved the rider anticipating an umbrella being opened as they rode past. The rider was told when it would be opened and despite the umbrella
remaining closed, the rider’s heart rate increased and consequently so did the horse’s. In another study, researchers told the riders that they would be squirting the horses with water at some point and although this didn’t actually happen, the anticipation of the water pistol and the fear of how the horse would react meant that the rider’s heart rates increased and again, so did the horse’s. For some riders there was no visible expression of tension, such as a change in posture, so the increases in the horse’s heart rate were concluded to come from either feeling the rider’s heart rate elevate or very subtle increases in muscle tension of the rider, felt through the saddle and/or reins. The horses did not have any reason to be nervous, so they were responding to the nerves of the rider. Lots of riders convince themselves before they’ve even got on that they are going to get taken off with/be left in a ditch somewhere/lose an arm/break a nail. Whilst being injured is a more understandable cause, you don’t just need a bad experience or a big event to lose confidence, it can creep up on you. Take the fear of spiders for example, how many people do you know that have actually been hurt by a spider? And being scared of horses doesn’t seem so ridiculous compared to being scared of clowns; you don’t need something to actually harm you to be fearful (Coulrophobiayes, it exists even though on the most part clowns are seen as fun and nowhere near as dangerous as a horse). So knowing that our fear can actually make the horse nervous an d cons e quentl y ins tigate unwanted behaviour, it becomes even more important that riders learn to manage their nerves. This is a whole other subject but improving confidence is not just a case of ‘pulling yourself together’; it takes effort, practice and training the brain. As always, the more we understand our horses and work to communicate effectively with them, Natalie x the safer we will be.

he club offers activities based around brain exercise that have been shown to slow down memory deterioration and improve quality of life.
The activity club is run by not-for-profit organisation Memory Matters South West. Director Kate Smith explained the thinking behind the new centre: "There’s a lack for facilities for people when they first learn they have dementia, which is exactly the time that activity and stimulation is required. Activity days like this allow them to meet with others in the same position, which gives reassurance and mutual support." "We use a variety of activities to provide stimulus, including number and word games, current affairs, calculating with money and listening to sounds." "Sessions are always fun and there’s a lot of laughter. Club members often become firm friends and they are always keen to help each other out."
As well as providing activities for those who are cared for, day clubs like this allow carers to have much needed time out for themselves, something that they often neglect because of worries about leaving their loved ones. Carol Emmett, who takes her husband to a similar club in Lostwithiel, Cornwall said: “When I decide it’s time to go off to do my shopping, I know I’m leaving

The Mede itself is a holiday home that supports people living with dementia and was recently selected as a finalist in the business category for The Alzheimer's Society "Dementia Friendly Awards". Sallie Rutledge, mother of three, opened The Mede five years’ ago to enable carers and their loved ones to have holidays, after her own father in law was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease. This year she acquired the next door bungalow, Seaward House, to run day time activities for people with dementia in the local area and also for those staying on holiday at The Mede. Sallie, a qualified nurse who works part time as a practice nurse in a local health centre, said: "The Mede seemed an ideal place also for an activity day club.
