WELCOME TO TROMP 2016 Welkom bij TROMP 2016

Again over a hundred young percussion talents from around the globe applied for this 23rd edition of the TROMP competition. The jury has selected those fortunate ones who will be able to participate. They meet in Eindhoven, not just to compete for trophies but to meet as colleagues. It is our experience close friendships and special collaborations are forged here. The warm and inviting atmosphere, added to by our host families, always manages to inspire.

Opnieuw meldden zich voor deze 23e editie van het TROMP concours meer dan honderd jonge slagwerktalenten uit de hele wereld aan. De gelukkigen die door de jury werden geselecteerd om ook daadwerkelijk deel te nemen, zullen hier in Eindhoven niet alleen strijden voor de prijzen, maar ontmoeten elkaar ook als collegaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s. Onze ervaring leert dat zij tijdens het concours hechte vriendschappen sluiten en vaak ook bijzondere samenwerkingsprojecten bedenken. De bijzondere warme en gezellige sfeer, waar onze gewaardeerde gastgezinnen nog een schepje bovenop doen, biedt altijd veel inspiratie.

These are some reasons why we are very excited to welcome the laureates, our guests, this edition. But there is more. The festival has been amplified with more concerts in more venues in Eindhoven. This way the various styles can thrive in an environment that suits them. TROMP laces the city with rhythm and percussion; during the event Eindhoven temporarily becomes the international capital of percussion!

We verheugen ons - mede daarom - op de laureaten die deze editie als speler te gast zijn. We hebben het festival uitgebreid met meer concerten op meerdere locaties in Eindhoven. Zo kunnen de uiteenlopende programmaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s in omgevingen klinken waar ze het best tot hun recht komen. En zo brengt TROMP ritme en slagwerk in de hele stad: Eindhoven is weer even de slagwerkhoofdstad van de wereld!

TROMP PERCUSSION EINDHOVEN

Dr. Ir. Theo Tromp founded the Tromp Biennial in Eindhoven in 1971 because he felt young talented musicians had too few opportunities. Over forty years later TROMP has become the leading competition for solo percussion in the world; partially because of the efforts of TROMP this special group of instruments strives for and commands more and more attention. TROMPs membership of the World Federation of International Music Competitions (WFIMC), which is only on invitation, reflects a global recognition for this reputable concours.

Dr. Ir. Theo Tromp riep in 1971 de Tromp Biënnale in het leven, omdat hij van mening was dat getalenteerde musici te weinig kansen kregen. Meer dan vier decennia later is het concours uitgegroeid tot het enige tweejaarlijkse concours voor solo-slagwerk ter wereld: een bijzondere instrumentgroep die steeds meer aandacht vraagt én krijgt, mede dankzij de inspanningen van TROMP. Ook TROMP’s lidmaatschap van de World Federation of International Music Competitions (WFIMC) dat alleen op uitnodiging kan worden verkregen, geeft blijk van de mondiale erkenning als topconcours.

TROMP provides masterclasses with members of the jury and laureates for potential candidates in Boston, Shanghai, Sao Paulo, Moscow and Tokyo during the Repertoire Days, previous to the competition. Laureates are given the opportunity to perform around the world, both solo and with prestigious international companies. The festival happens simultaneously to the competition. It offers young talent the chance to perform alongside internationally known percussionists, offering various manifestations of percussion. TROMP Percussion Eindhoven has the ideals of its founder close at heart, creating opportunities and a stage for young percussionists from around the world.

Voorafgaand aan het concours geeft TROMP in de Repertoire Days met juryleden en laureaten masterclasses voor potentiële deelnemers in o.a. Boston, Shanghai, Sao Paulo, Moskou en Tokio. Laureaten krijgen daarnaast de kans om over de hele wereld op te treden, solo en met vooraanstaande internationale gezelschappen. Het festival dat gelijktijdig met het concours plaats vindt, biedt een speelmogelijkheid voor jong talent naast gerenommeerde internationale slagwerkers en laat de vele verschijningsvormen van slagwerk zien. TROMP Percussion Eindhoven blijft op die manier dicht bij de oorspronkelijke idealen van zijn oprichter en creëert kansen en een podium, in de breedste zin van het woord, voor jonge slagwerkers uit de hele wereld.

THE BEAUTY OF MUSIC Het mooie van muziek XX

The beauty of music is a matter of both the heart and the brain. The heart, for music touches us all instantaneously. The brain, because before the sounds touch us with such apparent ease, musicians have had to put in amazing amounts of practice. The love for music is what brings the two together.

Het mooie van muziek is dat het een zaak is van het hart en het hoofd. Het hart, omdat muziek ons allemaal meteen raakt. Het hoofd omdat muzikanten ontzettend veel moeten oefenen om de ogenschijnlijk zo makkelijke klanken goed geplaatst te krijgen. Hart en hoofdzaak dus. Maar nooit een bijzaak!

The TROMP competition is well aware of this. This by now legendary percussion festival has brought about the highest level of musicians every two years. And again this year we, the audience, are able to enjoy 27 talents who want to compete. Masterclasses from the best percussionists on this earth have raised the bar, this is going to be amazing.

Dat heeft het TROMP-concours goed begrepen. Elke twee jaar brengt dit inmiddels legendarisch percussiefestival de hoogste kwaliteit aan percussiemuzikanten voort. Wij mogen als publiek ook dit jaar weer genieten van 27 talenten die zich gemeld hebben om met elkaar aan de slag te gaan. Het belooft schitterend te worden, want het niveau is omhoog gebracht door onder meer masterclasses van de beste percussionisten ter wereld.

Unique this year is the first edition of a seminar about developments in the area of percussion, looked at by internationally renowned percussionists. How is percussion going to develop as a solo instrument, in ensembles, orchestras and in various new settings? It makes me realize TROMP wants to be a frontrunner in its area of expertise. Very representative of Eindhoven! I used to play guitar myself sometimes, the grips have become a little rusty. But I start my day with music. Even though I love all kinds of music, I particularly like the Blues. Combined with the percussion of this competition you get Rhythm&Blues, one of the pillars of contemporary music. I wish good luck to all participants and to us as an audience much enjoyment. Thanks to TROMP!

Bijzonder dit jaar is de 1e editie van een seminar, waarin de wereldtop van de percussie zich buigt over de ontwikkelingen binnen hun vakgebied: hoe gaat het slagwerk zich verder ontwikkelen als soloinstrument, in ensembles, orkesten, en in nieuwe richtingen binnen uiteenlopende genres? Daarmee toont TROMP in mijn ogen aan dat het frontrunner wil zijn binnen haar vakgebied. Ook dat is heel erg Eindhovens! Vroeger speelde ik zelf nog wel eens gitaar, de grepen zijn inmiddels wat roestig geworden. Maar met muziek begin ik mijn dag. Hoewel ik een muzikale veelvraat ben, hecht ik vooral aan de Blues. Samen met de percussie die dit concours ons brengt, vormt dat de Rythm&Blues, ĂŠĂŠn van de pijlers van de moderne populaire muziek. Ik wens alle deelnemers veel succes, en ons als publiek veel genot. The number of applications for the competition continues to be high and, very important, very diverse and international. The internationally upcoming top percussionists are right to be wanting to come to Eindhoven. Winning the TROMP competition is a valuable stepping stone to a successful career.

Het is het bestuur en het hele team van TROMP een bijzonder genoegen u van harte welkom te heten bij deze editie 2016. Het belooft een bijzonder spectaculaire te worden. Het aantal aanmeldingen van deelnemers voor het concours is onverminderd hoog, en, erg belangrijk, zeer divers en internationaal. De aanstormende wereldtop van soloslagwerkers komt graag naar Eindhoven, en zij hebben gelijk. Het winnen van het TROMP concours is een waardevolle springplank naar een succesvolle carrière.

TROMP is more than a leading and unique competition. The extensive Festival program offers the audience and participants the opportunity to discover the latest developments in the innovative percussion world as well as the chance to meet each other. There will be extraordinary concerts in extraordinary locations and of course in our beautiful Muziekgebouw Eindhoven! But that is not all. TROMP Percussion takes its role as an educator very seriously and offers a balanced educational program. TROMP gives the youth a voice and a vote with the Youth Jury as well as making an active investment in further connecting with future participants, visitors and representatives.

TROMP is meer dan dit vooraanstaande en unieke concours. In het uitgebreide Festivalprogramma krijgen publiek en deelnemers de kans de laatste ontwikkelingen in de innovatieve slagwerkwereld te ontdekken, en elkaar te ontmoeten. Bijzondere concerten op bijzondere locaties. En natuurlijk ook gewoon in ons prachtige Muziekgebouw Eindhoven! Daar blijft het niet bij. TROMP Percussion neemt haar taak als educator zeer serieus, en biedt een afgewogen educatief programma. Laat de jeugd spreken en meebeslissen met de jeugdjury en zet actief in op verdere verbinding met haar toekomstige deelnemers, bezoekers en bestuurders.

The 1st and 2nd Rounds and Semi Finals take place in the Small Hall and are open to the public. You can only enter the hall and take your seat during applause and intermissions between participants. Tickets for the Finale, which takes place in the Great Hall DLL, are available at the Muziekgebouw Eindhoven Ticket Office.

This festival Alexandre returns to Eindhoven with his Trio SR9 to perform a body percussion concert and Simeon Ten Holtâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Canto Ostinato with Percussion Friends, featuring TROMP 2014 winner Dominique Vleeshouwers. ALEXANDRE ESPERET gaf meer dan 30 concerten en masterclasses als 1e prijswinnaar van TROMP 2012. With commissioned compositions by leading composers TROMP continues to extend and refresh the repertoire for solo percussion. Over the past fifteen years composers including Louis Andriessen, Bryce Dessner, Nico Muhly, Joey Roukens, Michael Torke, Steve Martland and Jacob ter Veldhuis have written new pieces for percussion commissioned by TROMP.

Glenn Kotche (Wilco) composed Time Passages, the new mandatory final work for the competition in 2016, which will be premiered by the three finalists with Asko|Schönberg and Slagwerk Den Haag. The finalists will use multiple percussion set ups as well as more traditional keyboard percussion. “I knew I wanted to have the finalist use their entire bodies (not just their hands) and include some sort of electronic or electroacoustic percussion as well.”

De finalisten zullen meerdere slagwerk opstellingen, maar ook traditioneler melodisch slagwerk gebruiken. “Ik wist dat ik wilde dat de finalisten hun hele lichaam (niet alleen hun handen) moeten gebruiken en dat er elektronisch of elektroakoestische percussie in gebruikt zou moeten worden.”

Robin de Raaff wrote Contradictie V, the compulsory work for the Semi-Finals for multiple percussion solo set-up. The Percussion Concerto for percussion soloist and ensemble of the Dutch composer earned him international praise in The New York Times in 2013. De Raaff wrote compositions commissioned by the Netherlands Opera and the Holland Festival among others. His new work commissioned by TROMP, which according to the composer will be a playful piece, is the fifth in a series of solo pieces for various instruments.

Robin de Raaff schreef Contradictie V, het verplichte werk voor de halve finales voor meerdere soloslagwerk opstellingen. Zijn Percussion Concerto voor slagwerksolist en ensemble bracht hem internationale lof in The New York Times in 2013. De Raaff schreef composities in opdracht van o.a. de Nationale Opera en het Holland Festival. Zijn nieuwe werk in opdracht van TROMP, een speels stuk volgens de componist, is de vijfde in een reeks van solowerken voor diverse instrumenten.

GLENN KOTCHE As a composer and percussionist, Glenn Kotche is active in both the composed music scene as in indie pop and the broad range in between. Kotche is a creative omnivore seeking the best of various artistic worlds, which he not only manages to connect but also enrich. From installations constructed from ‘found sound’ to compositions for ensembles such as the Kronos Quartet and Eighth Blackbird. And from collaborations with composers like John Luther Adams to his work as a drummer with Wilco, one of the world’s most influential indie rock bands.

Als componist en slagwerker is Glenn Kotche actief in zowel de gecomponeerde muziek als in indie pop en het brede palet ertussen. Kotche is een creatieve veelvraat die het beste van verschillende artistieke werelden met elkaar weet te verbinden en keer op keer weet te verrijken. Van installaties met veldopnamen tot composities voor ensembles als het Kronos Quartet en Eighth Blackbird; van projecten met John Luther Adams of Jim O’Rourke tot zijn werk als drummer bij Wilco, één van ’s werelds meest invloedrijke indie rockbands.

“I completely draw upon my training in jazz and classical percussion as well as my experience in playing rock, experimental and free improvised music”, Glenn Kotche explains. As a result, the commissioned composition Time Passages for TROMP traverses a lot of musical ground for the finalists. The piece features three distinct formal sections each exhibiting their own time signature(s) and unique musical identity.

“Ik baseer me volledig op mijn opleiding in jazz en klassiek slagwerk evenals mijn ervaring in het spelen van rock, experimentele en geïmproviseerde muziek”, licht Glenn Kotche toe. Time Passages, de compositie die hij schreef in opdracht van TROMP, doorkruist dan ook heel wat muzikale domeinen voor de finalisten. Het stuk bestaat uit drie verschillende delen met elk een eigen maatsoort en unieke muzikale identiteit.

Kotche hopes Time Passages gives the jury a clear indication of which finalist not only made the best musical decisions and adaptations, but which one is the most well-rounded and musically mature. “I first thought about what skills I think are important for any young percussionist to have so that they may not only have a successful career in music - but more importantly, push the boundaries of percussion in bold new directions.”

Kotche hoopt dat Time Passages de jury een heldere indicatie geeft welke finalist niet alleen de beste muzikale beslissingen en aanpassingen maakt, maar ook wie het meest veelzijdig en muzikaal volwassen is. ‘Ik heb eerst bedacht welke vaardigheden volgens mij belangrijk zijn voor een jonge slagwerker om niet alleen een succesvolle carrière in de muziek te hebben, maar - nog veel belangrijker - de grenzen van slagwerk naar gedurfde nieuwe richtingen te verleggen.”

As a special guest in the festival, Kotche brings his installations to the Van Abbemuseum, performs a solo concert and is keynote speaker in the seminar about how percussion will evolve as a solo instrument. He mostly looks forward to revisiting some of his sound installations which feature fragments of his life in the studio and on tour. “I see the installations as an extension or further exploration of my drumming and composing - all of those mediums are very much connected creatively for me -, so it’s very exciting to revisit, rework and to bring them to the Netherlands.”

Als speciale gast op het festival, brengt Kotche zijn installaties naar het Van Abbemuseum, speelt een soloconcert en is keynote-spreker in het seminar over de ontwikkeling van slagwerk als solo-instrument. Hij kijkt vooral uit naar een aantal van zijn installaties met fragmenten uit zijn leven in de studio en op tournee. “Ik zie de installaties in het verlengde of als verder onderzoek van mijn drummen en componeren - al die mediums zijn voor mij creatief erg aan elkaar verbonden -, dus het is heel spannend om ze weer te zien, herzien en naar Nederland te halen.”

TROMP REPERTOIRE DAYS

TROMP organizes the Repertoire Days in preparation of the international percussion competition. Participants from all over the world are given the opportunity to attend master classes by jury members and laureates and study the competition’s repertoire, as well as other solo repertoire. Since the start in 2010 the Repertoire Days have expanded to cities such as Boston, Shanghai, Sao Paulo, Moscow and Tokyo. Masters in previous editions: James Wood, Christian Dierstein, Emmanuel Séjourné, Arnold Marinissen, Peter Prommel and Yi-Ping Yang among many others.

TROMP is committed to the development of repertoire and the recruitment of young talent. TROMP is part of a network of percussion teachers who prepare the way to the conservatories.

TROMP maakt zich met educatieve projecten sterk voor de ontwikkeling van repertoire en nieuwe aanwas van talenten in de dop. Zo begeeft TROMP zich binnen een netwerk van slagwerkdocenten die de weg voor jonge talenten naar het conservatorium voorbereiden.

The composition competition teaches a new generation of composers at the Dutch conservatories to write for percussion. All entries are performed by fellow students in the lunchtime concert Thursday, November 24. An expert jury selects a winner, who will be announced immediately after the concert.

Met de compositiewedstrijd leert de nieuwe generatie componisten van de Nederlands conservatoria werken te schrijven voor slagwerk. Alle inzendingen worden tijdens het lunchpauzeconcert op donderdag 24 november uitgevoerd door medestudenten. Een deskundige jury kiest een winnaar die meteen na het concert bekend wordt gemaakt.

The TROMP Self-made Schoolyard Orchestra is a project open to all groups of primary education and involves children to make music with unusual instruments like cement tubs, tuned scaffolding pipes, tuned beer bottles, shakers, tubes and boards. These will be combined with singing, rapping, clapping and beating. The children give a performance in a schoolyard concert for an audience of parents, neighbours and friends.

Het Zelfgemaakte Schoolplein Orkest is een project voor alle groepen binnen het basisonderwijs dat op school wordt uitgevoerd met ongebruikelijke muziekinstrumenten zoals cementkuipen, gestemde steigerpijpen, gestemde bierflessen, shakers, klapkokers en klankplanken. Daarnaast wordt er gezongen, gerapt, geklapt en gestampt. In het ‘schoolpleinconcert’ geven de kinderen een show voor ouders, buren en bekenden.

In the ‘Trompbot project’ for college students accept an impressive challenge: ‘Construct a drumming robot, make a percussion instrument, compose a rhythm for multiple percussion instruments and programme a combined performance.’

In het project Trompbot krijgen leerlingen van het voortgezet onderwijs de kans om door middel van een techniekproject op een heel andere manier met muziek bezig te zijn. ‘Design en bouw een drumrobot. Fabriceer deze robot en maak een percussie-instrument, componeer een ritme voor meerdere percussie-instrumenten en programmeer een performance met samenspel.’

Today, Muziekgebouw Eindhoven is justifiably regarded as one of the premier European concert halls, attracting leading international musicians. The ambience and excellent acoustics have made Muziekgebouw Eindhoven an absolute favourite spot for audiences and performers. Located in Eindhoven city centre, it offers all the benefits of a modern, state-of-the-art concert hall. The two concert halls in the Muziekgebouw were constructed in close collaboration with acoustic engineers from the Eindhoven University of Technology. Hence, the concert halls have become great ‘instruments’ for the musicians performing on its stages.
