HOOHOO!! Our favorite time of year has arrived! It is fall in Northern California. The colors are changing and the temps are right where we and all of our bikes like it…nice and cool. It’s a great time to get reacquainted with that old leather jacket that you might not have seen since April. It is a good time to remind ourselves that this time of year the leaves are falling which means that corner you have been carving at 60 mph all summer long will be slick if it is covered in leaves, just something to keep in mind as you hit the road this month. Always stay alert and in one piece. It is also an exciting time of year because all of the new bikes are in the dealerships and we will be doing reviews on as many as we can get our hands on over the next couple of months. We are starting that off now in this issue with two new 2018 Harley-Davidson motorcycles to get the ball rolling, so stay tuned. Now is a great time to get out to your favorite dealer if you have not already done so and check out all that is new for 2018. Who knows you just might be inspired to get on that new ride you have been dreaming about. October is also Breast Cancer Awareness month - so show some support for healthy breasts by attending one of the many fundraisers that will be going on this time of year. There are normal boobs ( . )( . ), silicone boobs ( + )( + ), perfect boobs (o) (o) Some boobs are cold (^)(^) and some boobs belong to grandmothers \./\./ And let’s not forget the very large boobs (o Y o) and very small boobs (.)(.) and lastly the asymmetrical boobs (•)(.) We love them all! Save the boobies!! Too many of our mothers, grandmothers , sisters, daughter, wives or girlfriends have had to deal with this disease that scars and takes so many lives, wouldn’t it be a blessing to all of us if all of the fundraising finally helped find a cure once and for all. KEEP YOUR EYES PEELED

ell, we’ve managed to survive the sweltering triple digit heat of summer in Northern California, especially out here in the valley and foothills. Fall is upon us and in my opinion - early fall is the best riding weather in Northern California. The weather is perfect for riding, easy on the body and easy on the engines. Now is the time for nice rides to the country or up to the mountains without the concern of a heat stroke or blowing up your motor because of the heat. However, there is a danger because this is the time of year the wild animals are starting to move. We’ve always had to keep an eye out for cell phone talking, texting and just plain old inattentive drivers, now we have to keep our eyes peeled for deer and other wild animals. This is no joke! I’ve talked to a couple of people this week that are bringing in their motorcycles because they hit a deer. Hitting a deer is like hitting a Prius. A deer will do just as much damage to your bike as a Prius. A deer will cause

you just as much pain and injury as a Prius and the deer doesn’t give a shit about you, just like the Prius. I guess you can figure out by now I have a history of close calls with Prius drivers. Back to the deer! When you’re out enjoying the twisting and winding country roads try to keep a little more alert. It seems most of the encounters with deer are when the sun is down or starting to go down. There you are hammering the turns, twisting the throttle out of a nice big sweeping turn, then…… then there it is! A big five point buck that just jumped in the middle of your lane! If that don’t drop a tootsie roll in your shorts nothing will. And just because you made an amazing evasive maneuver and shit your pants, it’s not a guarantee you’re gonna miss the deer. I’ve had my own encounters with deer on more than one occasion. Luckily it was only encounters and not collisions, that’s not to say they weren’t close calls and I was lucky every time. Even our very own Stan Hill from TRM NorCal hit a deer before on Folsom-Auburn Blvd! He was fortunate enough to land on top of the deer and him and Bambi slid down the road a while before Stan got up and walked away and the deer ran off. All the riding experience in the world won’t help if the deer runs or jumps in front of you when you’re moving at high speed or worse yet, hits you. This is common and happens more than you would think! Riding a motorcycle is fun, dangerous and exciting all rolled into one good time and that’s what separates us from them. I’m not trying to scare anyone from riding and if I did you probably shouldn’t be riding anyhow. Keep your eyes peeled this fall season, have fun and ride like hell. That’s my two cents! ell, last month our story left off with us at Cape Disappointment in Southwestern Washington. After visiting Astoria, we had crossed over the Columbia River and checked Quinault Beach Resort and out the Lewis and Clark Museum, Casino the lighthouse, and what remains of Fort Canby. As we mentioned, we enjoyed our short stay there, although we had an incident that could definably have dampened our trip. My brother was walking along an elevated section of the Fort and didn’t see a missing chunk, stepped into it and fell about three feet to the concrete floor below. He landed on his side with a thud, but thank God, he was ok. Scary!

After that, we decided it was time to hit the road. Making our way back to Highway 101, we hustled our way up to Ocean Shores. It was time for the annual Hog Wild Motorcycle Rally at the Quinault Beach Resort and Casino (www. quinaultbeachresort. com) By the time we arrived to check in, the bikes were rolling in by the threes and fours. Our accommodations were very nice, even had ocean views. The motorcycle rally is a four-day event put on by Roadshows. They do it up real good with bands, vendors, poker runs, bike show, BBQ’s, two buffets. Wow! Lots to do! Even a 2017 Indian Dark Horse as the main raffle prize. That night we ate at the Resort and afterwards went out and watched the all-girl AC/DC tribute band, Hell’s Belles, rock it out. Next day, we decided to ride up the road apiece and take a putt out on the beach. Definitely something you don’t get to do very often, but kinda fun once you get past

the deep stuff. Wish we could have stayed longer, but Dave had to get back home and we had to get up to the Lake. So, after listening to the Lucky Tongue Band, we parted ways and headed north to Quinault Lake, which is at the southern edge of the Olympic National Park.

Quinault River Inn

Taking some picturesque backroads, we made our way to Highway 101 again and got off at the Amanda Park exit. The kids were staying at the Quinault Lake Resort. Since this trip was kind of last minute, they were booked up by the time we decided to go. We found a real nice inn a couple of miles away - the Quinault River Inn (www.quinaultriverinn.com) is located right on the river and less expensive than the resort. It’s clean, quiet and with a couple of restaurants close by, makes it a great alternative place to stay. After checking in, we rode up to the resort for a visit and dinner. If you want to spend a little more, the resort offers boat rentals, lawn games, a great park for picnics and a real popular swimming beach. I can see why people like this property so much. We hung out mostly at the resort the next day. Got some exercise in on a couple of the nearby hiking trails. I wanted to ride around the lake, but was told that the eastern side wasn’t paved and got “bumpy”, so we hopped into their SUV and drove it. Bumpy was

On Hwy 101

not the right word. There were areas that would challenge a dual sport! Dinner time! If you’re up this way, besides the resort, the Salmon House is the place to enjoy a fine meal. So, the following day, we rode up 101 to Ruby’s Beach. This is a must see in the area. A rugged section of coastline with huge sea stacks rising out of surf. Very impressive! You can take a short hike down to the beach, stroll around and soak in the incredible surroundings. Next time, we’ll bring some eats and have lunch on a driftwood picnic table. Back at the Inn, we enjoyed one more relaxing day before it was time to head home. It was a fabulous trip. Some great riding and lots of time spent with family and friends. Can’t get much better than that. We should mention that the ride home was no treat. For two days, it was triple digits most of the way! Ouch! Article and photos contributed by Chuck and Cindy Loseth

2018 HARLEY-DAVIDSON FAT BOY

Arguably the most well known bike in the HarleyDavidson line up, the Fat Boy has set the standard for styling in the motorcycle cruiser category. Some may call it typecasting, but I am willing the bet that it is the bold aggressive look that made it the bike that Arnold Schwarzenegger chose to ride in the movie - The Terminator. Although Harley-Davidson has completely rebuilt this bike from front to back and side to side - it still has that tough look about it that will forever turn heads as it rumbles down the road. Don’t let its wellbuilt good looks fool you - this bike has taken on a high performance based ride and here is why…Let’s start with the much improved softail frame with the new mono-shock, increased stiffness and all while shaving 31 pounds off this model. Now you might be thinking 31 pounds is that not that big of a deal, but I can tell you that you will definitely notice that this bike feels lighter while riding it. Next up is the new MilwaukeeEight engine, you can get with the 107 ci motor like this one or for an additional $1,300 you can get it with the 114 ci motor. To me that is a no brainer -Get the 114! Not saying that the 107 is underpowered, but you will not be able to upgrade later without spending more than $1,300. Another cool feature of this bike is that you can easily adjust the rebound of the rear mono-shock with a knob that is located below the right side of the seat to dial it in for heavier loads. For 2018 the Fat Boy has solid

disc wheels with big burly 240mm back tire and 160mm front tire that give this bike a meaty muscular look both coming and going. The front has a new LED Day Maker headlamp in a redesigned front end. The front end pipes and engine heads have all taken on a cool new look with what they call Satin Chrome – it has a kind of a brushed nickel look that I liked - something different. The floor boards have been moved up for more cornering clearance and the heel shifter is gone. As far as the ride, it took me a couple of turns to get used to the 240mm rear tire but I quickly felt right at home on this bike and was quite surprised by the comfortable seating position and the increased lean capability was noticeable right away. You can lean this bike way over compared to the previous Fat Boys that would easily scrape their floorboards. Of course, the new softail frame impressed me with its ride quality; all I can say is that if you find yourself interested in the new Fat Boy you should really get over to Harley-Davidson of Folsom and take a test ride and you will see exactly what I mean…it is a fun ride! 3rd Annual Wishes on Wheels Motorcycle Charity Run

September 10 (Folsom): Formerly known as the Walt Gray Ride - Wishes on Wheels picked up where the former run left off. Partnering together the Make-A-Wish® Northeastern California and Northern Nevada Foundation, Harley-Davidson of Folsom and Jackson Rancheria Casino Resort took over the reins to keep this much needed charity event going. The Make-A-Wish® Foundation is an organization that grants wishes to children with life threatening diseases and aliments. You can only imagine if you have not been in this situation just how much it would lift the spirits of a kid that is fighting for their lives to get the opportunity to fulfill a dream that they have always wanted. Two ‘Wish’ kids were in attendance this year who had both received their wishes, one was 12 year old Allayah diagnosed with hematologic disorder - she confidently sang the national anthem before the riders departed to Jackson Rancheria Casino. It was her wish to go to Paris. And the other was 19 year old Patrick who was diagnosed two years ago with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma - his wish was to go to Ireland and he said it was the most amazing thing he had ever done. It is fundraisers just like this that allow Make-A-Wish® to grant these wishes. You

cannot help but to believe that the positive energy that these ‘Wish’ kids must have felt to have a dream come true had some part in the fact that they are healthy and happy today. After you take part in this ride – it is guaranteed that you will come away knowing that you have been a part of that effort for another ‘Wish’ child that could use a boost in spirit while going through a difficult time. Once the riders arrived at Jackson Rancheria Casino Resort after a great ride they were treated to a very nice tritip sandwich lunch that I have to say was pretty darn tasty. On stage - After Dark was entertaining us with our favorite classic rock tunes. Then Jackson Rancheria Casino TV spokesperson - Rich Hoffman made a special appearance to announce the raffle prize winners. It was a fantastic day of riding and camaraderie that was topped off knowing your good deed helped Make-A-Wish come true! Thank you to Harley-Davidson of Folsom, Jackson Rancheria Casino and the Make-A-Wish® Northeastern California and Northern Nevada for doing all that you do to keep this much needed local motorcycle charity event going. Peanut

I grew up in Maryland in the small town of Bowie. I fell in love at the age of 12 in the dirt with a Honda XR75. There were sandpits that backed up to the neighborhood and we rode every chance we could and nothing else we ever did compared. My mother wouldn’t allow me to have a motorcycle so I kept it at my friend’s house. His family owned a cabin in WV and we would ride for hours on the wide open dirt roads. When I was sixteen, I dated a guy who owned a Yamaha Dual Sport and somehow he always ended up on the back of his own bike. His friends would tell him he was crazy for letting a girl ride him around and still to this day I think my love for his motorcycle was the reason we stayed together as long as we did. Years later I moved to California and as I walked around visiting all the different vendors at a festival in downtown Sacramento, I noticed “Leather and Lace Women’s Motorcycle Club” est. 1979. I was curious and had to stop and find out what they were all about. They were a group of women who rode motorcycles together to raise money for breast cancer awareness. I was so ready to sign up that I began filling out the form and when I reached the question asking me what kind of bike I owned I quickly realized I didn’t even own a bike. I finished the application of interest and left it with them hoping that they wouldn’t read it and realize I didn’t even own a motorcycle. In 2004, I bought a 95 Yamaha Virago and two weeks later I went to their monthly meeting to see what the biker world was all about. The club I initially inquired about changed their name to “Sisters of Scota Women’s

Motorcycle Club”. They had a calendar full of rides planned and the following weekend I was camping in Ft. Bragg. These women started calling me “Peanut” because I had the smallest bike. I felt so comfortable and even though I had just met them - I felt a sense of belonging. I loved hanging out with them and building friendships and trust but my patch didn’t come easy. I had to learn everything the hard way and my prospecting period was extended. The experience was humbling but receiving that patch was one of the happiest days of my life and being a part of this Sisterhood has been a gift. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the two women that are responsible, Gramps and Grumbles. I love the ride, I love the women, and I love the wind in my face especially on my 2013 Dyna Street Bob. As long as I’m able, I will be riding a motorcycle. As long as I live - I will defend and honor the heart and wings on my back that represent, The Sisters of Scota Women’s Motorcycle Club.

IRON WORKERS MC GIVING BACK TO THE COMMUNITY

August 12 (Roseville): Recently, the Iron Workers MC Chapter in Roseville reached out and invited TRM NorCal to join them as they delivered supplies and some money donations to the Children’s Receiving Home of Sacramento (www.crhkids.org) This is a safe place for kids to go when their family life falls apart from abuse or neglect. When kids show up they typically have what they are wearing and that is it. So a lot of the basics are in high demand, items like clothes and school supplies are always in need. The Iron Workers MC had collected a bunch of the items along with some money that is much needed to help run this facility, from events that they had done earlier in the year. I was honored to join them so that I could have the privilege of sharing this kind gesture with all of you. It truly warms my heart to be associated with such fine people that make up the biker community and are constantly giving their time, money and effort to help people in need and it is especially meaningful when the recipients are innocent kids that just happen to be stuck in a bad situation. Great job to all that donated and thank you to the Iron Workers MC and the wonderful staff at the Children’s Receiving Home for showing your love and compassion to the children in our area in their time of need. A

ugust was a doozy with more days over 100 degrees than under. The sweltering heat kept most people inside, yet the bike runs went on and were mostly successful. Bikes ran hot and made some folks think twice about changing over to synthetic oil on their next oil change. People seemed to be a little more agitated in traffic and with everyday life. There seems to be something about the extreme heat that after so many days it seems to just wither away our attitude. We are told to drink more water than usual to rehydrate ourselves since our bodies are mostly made up of water. For some who don’t like to drink water in the first place, this can be a feat all in itself. By the time we feel the thirst coming on, doctors say you are already dehydrated and the key to hydration is to take in a little bit all day long. When the heat comes on like it does, it is really dangerous for pets to be outside like normal. Even when a dog has water and is living outside, you will notice him panting more than usual. That is because his body temperature is rising and may not be used to a constant heat wave. The way animals naturally stay hydrated, if you pay attention to them, is that they drink water throughout the day. A little sip here and little sip there, and they are able to stay properly hydrated. In contrast, when we consider vegetation, we notice that when we get an extreme heat wave, trees sometimes dry and bushes shrivel up and start losing their leaves. The only way to stop this from happening is to physically draw a hose and start to soak the vegetation.

Now, if you notice the trees and vegetation that are close to the lawn or planted by a stream or lake, you will notice the heat rarely affects them. They are constantly being fed water all day long. When they need a sip, its abundantly available. If I were a dog, I would hope I had a good owner that would keep my water bowl filled with clean water and provided shade. Now if I was a tree, I would hope to be planted by a body of water of some sort, so I would never go thirsty. The moment I felt over heated or dried out, I would have an abundant river of water to draw on. Hence the gospel. We all get overheated with life at times. We all become withered and to the point where our lives are tested and our hopes and dreams start to fade away. The gospel is about streams of living water that will refresh you in your hour of need. The truth is not in the pastor, it is not in some building, and not on some Sunday morning TV evangelist program. The truth is in the living word of God that flows freely to anyone who searches for the truth. It is refreshing, rebuilding and very personal to each and every one who seeks. Swing by Thunder Road Biker Church for your cup of water… Psalm 1:6 He is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither. Whatever he does prospers. (NIV) “Never Ride Alone” Pastor Johnny Lujan

13TH ANNUAL

SAINTS AND SINNERS MC EVENT August 19 (Newark): The event started with a prayer by Saints and Sinners President Wilfredo, asking for a safe ride before the big rush to the bikes and a great ride through the hills of Livermore. It was a warm but not uncomfortable so browsing the prize table was fun especially if you wished for the Sanyo 55” HD TV 1080p or the outdoor fire pit or maybe you needed a Metzler Tire or a menagerie of tools, riding helmet or leather jacket. Lots of Biker jewelry was up for raffle as well. The Pathfinders had a special booth to host their own raffle where $20 would win a 2008 Road Glide. We met up with John from Perfect Past Custom Motorcycles who displayed his awesome show bike. The Jerky booth was there and something new, how about a hair and beard trim by Mikel Sessions Hair Artistry. We found Wayne in the hot seat smiling as he was groomed. We ate tri-tip, chicken, ribs, hot dogs, baked beans, corn on the cob, green salad, fruit salad, potato salad and macaroni salad to the tunes of a new Indie rock band called “Tonic Zephyr” followed by DJ music. Everyone was in a good mood for the slow race and the hot dog bite. Great time, won’t miss this next year! Article contributed by Nad Parham. Photos contributed by Dan Rogers

12 Annual Renegade Rendezvous th

Bike Show & Tattoo Expo September 9 (Dixon): It was a full day of motorcycle fun brought to you by Renegade Classics and Iron Steed Harley-Davidson. Show bikes started to roll in early as the big grassy area surrounded by vendors was filling up fast with bikes categorized accordingly to see if they could earn one of the many House of Kolor trophies to be awarded. Located inside the fairground hall, it was a custom builders show that was sponsored by Lucas Oil. The pro’s brought in some spectacular motorcycles and all who attended had the opportunity to chose their favorite bike, People’s Choice style. Congratulations to all the builders who brought their latest creations they were all amazing bikes but it was Doug Ide of Ide Innovations that took the honors this year with a beautifully done bagger. Other sponsors for this great event were Thunder Valley Casino, Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys and Coors Light. This event will keep you on the move if you want to take in all the attractions from Jason Pullen Stunts tearing up tires to midget wrestling, biker games, body painting of some very attractive ladies,

industry vendors and much more. One of the events that I always find fascinating is the fusion art demonstration. This is where three different tattoo artists start drawing a piece of art and after 15 minutes they switch palettes; so all three pieces will have the artistic input from each of the tattoo artists. The finished product is usually very interesting. The art is then auctioned off to the highest bidder with the proceeds going to local kid’s scholarship funds. There is also a tattoo contest that shows off some of the area’s finest tattoo artists.

Now you can’t have a party without music, right? That was covered as headline bands like Audioboxx and Night Moves hit the stage all day entertaining the crowd with their music. As the day was wrapping up - it only made sense to have a bikini contest since there were so many hot girls and body painted beauties walking around accepting photo requests for a tip. The girls were having a blast up on stage strutting their stuff to win bragging rights, a trophy and a box full of money donated by the spectators. Great job to all the girls they all deserved a trophy. As we packed up our Thunder Roads NorCal booth our thoughts were with all of the friends of the magazine that stopped in to say hello and give us kind words of encouragement. It blows us away that so many of you

appreciate our efforts and we are forever grateful. I am sure the entire Renegade Rendezvous crew that help put on this fast paced event share in their appreciation of all who attend one of the best shows in Northern California each year! BIKER BAND REVUE:

double shots from Mexico. He couldn’t play it so he just looked at it. In 5th grade, the school had electives that parents would open their homes and teach - one lady taught guitar. It was there that he learned to play a few easy songs like On Top Of Old Smoky. Later in high school, he became involved with the schools jazz band.

A

uburn has always been a place I love to ride to, especially at dusk. As you ride through the nostalgic town you get the feeling of stepping back into time. Restaurants and bars are filled with Auburn residents, and tourist listening to live music while waiting for their evening meal to be prepared by some of the best chef’s around. At one time, Los Angeles was just like Auburn…laid back, and filled with restaurants that had live music. Not anymore. Longing for that old town atmosphere The DoubleShots finally bailed out of Southern California and permanently moved to Auburn. When Tim was eight years old, his uncle gave him a battery-operated transistor radio. He took it everywhere, even to bed, where he would pray that he wouldn’t forget to turn it off before falling asleep and run down the batteries… but he always did. Tim always had the radio with him, except when he went to school. Tim considered school just a nuisance because he couldn’t listen to his radio. He still has it among his other keepsakes. His parents gave him a nylon string classical guitar. Tim learned a few tunes and parts of songs on his own, but having no one to teach him, he finally drifted away. A year and a half later he joined the bell choir at his church. Eventually Tim and the choir went on tour, along with a Christian folk group. The folk group had a couple of guys that played acoustic guitars, Tim was impressed with what he heard. He started hanging with them, and eventually they gave Tim some charts to help him. Tim eagerly began playing his guitar again along with the aid of the charts he had received. The rest is history. Geoff constantly listened to his parent’s vinyl collection. He became inspired with artist like the Beatles, Bob Dylan and Elton John. Geoff got to see on the Ed Sullivan show the Beatles play: I Want Hold Your Hand. Geoff watched these young musicians playing and the audience of ladies screaming over them…he thought to himself “I want to do that.” His Grandparents gave him a 3/4 nylon string guitar

The DoubleShots journey began in 1990 while Tim was playing at a coffee house called Busters. Geoff would sit in for a couple of songs, but ended up playing all night. It was uncanny how they were able to follow each other; for unknown reasons Tim kind of knew where Geoff was going next. People would say “Wow! We can tell you’ve been playing together a long time!” By 1995, they split up to pursue other band commitments. And in late 2000 – Geoff and Tim reunited. Playing as a duo came easy for them, impressing others with their ability to play great music using only two acoustic guitars….their answer “well, it still has six strings, the only difference is that you put a little more arm into it”. When asked why they have not recorded some of their many original songs (written by both Tim and Geoff) their answer made me laugh “We’re just lazy.” They actually do plan on recording some of their originals sometime in the future. In 2016, the DoubleShots tied with 2 other bands for the “Best of The Best” award for Auburn Entertainment, sponsored by the Auburn Journal. Most of their gigs are in restaurants. They rarely play in bars; they feel that a bar is a full band arena. The hours are better, and most of their gigs are finished by the time they would be starting up if they play in the bars. The DoubleShots have a full time schedule on a continuous basis. They very seldom schedule gigs for annual events or festivals; in order for them to do so they would have to book way out. They have played at The Club Car every Wednesday for the past 13 years! So…if you’re looking for some great tunes and a meal in Auburn, come hang out and listen to the DoubleShots jam live at one of the many restaurants there. They play everything from the Beatles to the Eagles. You would be impressed that two guys can make great music…armed with acoustic guitars only!

5th Annual FXR’S of California Event August 19 (Sacramento): The Sacramento Raceway was the hot venue for the annual FXR’s of California event! If you love motorcycles, there was something in the program schedule for you to enjoy. Like the stunt shows in a huge arena from Jason Pullen and his crew, along with the Out Here Crew and the Bassani Stunt Team! The tire vendors were smiling ear to ear as stunt riders were doing burn outs all day long. Meanwhile at the drag strip, it was time for some good old fashioned grudge racing. If you thought your bike has what it takes to be the fastest - well now was the time to stop talking and show just what your bike is made of! There was dozens of industry vendors on hand to show off their latest and greatest products and services along with plenty of food and beverage vendors. Later in the day as the sun started to set, it was time for some Hooligan Flat Track racing. There were 3 different categories to choose from and the racing was fast and exciting to watch.

Now of course, this show would not be complete without the big bike show. This is a ride-in bike show is reserved for FXR’s and Dynas only and there were some spectacular bikes that had rolled in from far and wide. When all the dust had settled it was John Jessup owner of Dream Rides of Stockton who took home

the Hot Bike Magazine “Best In Show” award with his FXR that he finished building just in the nick of time to bring to the event. 2018 HARLEY-DAVIDSON HERITAGE

Not too many bikes in the Harley-Davidson line up have as much nostalgic appeal as the Heritage Softail Classic. But this year is a bit different, you might agree or disagree but in my opinion the 2018 Heritage has retained its nostalgic good looks but with modern upgrades that make this a completely different motorcycle from the past. For starters, the Softail frame has been completely redesigned. The new frame has a modern mono shock that sits right under the seat and behind the beastly Milwaukee-Eight power plant instead of down below the back of the motor – a huge improvement. Harley-Davidson has trimmed 33 pounds off of this bike while substantially stiffing up the frame from last year’s model and that is very noticeable in the ride (more on that later). Complimenting the rear mono shock, this bike now has performance cartridge style front forks that have been blacked out along with all of the other traditionally chrome parts, even the heads on the motor got the black treatment. Also up front is a new LED headlight that really lights up the road. The color of this bike is called Red Iron Denim and only comes with the 114 ci motor. The rest of the bikes come with the option of the 107 ci Milwaukee-Eight or the 114 ci. The upgrade cost around $1300 and in my opinion it is a great deal to get the 114 since you can’t buy the parts for

that much. Also new is the leather covered hard bags that are lockable, cruise control also comes standard on the Heritage. The ride qualities were a bit of a surprise to me - the new frame was immediately noticeable with a smooth very compliant ride with a feeling of complete control over the bike right away if you have ridden Softails in the past you will recognize right away that this is a completely different ride, more of a performance capable feel and for me that is all good news. The 114 ci Milwaukee-Eight makes this bike a lot of fun to ride as the power is immediately available, it just wants to jump up and go. When getting on the freeway it accelerated smoothly and quickly as you could feel the torque with each shift of the gears. By the time I returned to HarleyDavidson of Folsom I was thoroughly impressed with this bike. I highly recommend that you get in and give the Heritage a test ride and you will see what I mean. Inaugural Humboldt Half Mile Pro Flat Track

Mike Carli Race Director

Benevolent Portuguese Brotherhood and Touring Club

Aug 5 (Ferndale): The California Flat Track Association (www.californiaflattrack.com) rolled into the Humboldt Fairgrounds for the Inaugural Humboldt Half Mile Pro Flat Track race. Racers came from California, Oregon and Nevada to try their luck at this new venue. It was an overcast day, typical of Humboldt County this time of year. The racers enjoyed the cool weather as they prepped their machines getting ready for the races. There were riders on many types of motorcycles, including Hondas, Triumphs and Yamahas that were raring to go. The cushioned track was a welcome change to many racers with deep loose dirt unlike the local harder surface tracks, with shorter distances and lower speeds. The promoter Randy Kremlacek and race director Mike Carli, wanted this race to be successful because they hope to return to this venue on a yearly basis. Their crew had put a lot into the track and had advertised the races locally. There was a great group of young racing talent on hand including 14 year old racer from Escalon - Hunter Brooks the 2017 AMA Nicky Hayden Horizon award winner. Plus there were veteran racers on hand including 67 year old Bobby Ingle of Cave Junction, Oregon; Brad Raymond of Laytonville; 69 year old Pete Porter of Eureka; Jack Jones of Tulare - as well as San Francisco racer Wade Boyd “The Mad Yank” of Isle of Man fame. Racers were called to the grid for the heats to start and now it was SHOWTIME! Announcer Armando Miranda was working up the growing crowd with his commentary. In the heats the speeds were continually going up as the racers were growing familiar with the track. Wade Boyd was wowing the crowd with his DTR1 Yamaha R1 street machine which was there for exhibition only. It was hitting speeds of 100 mph in the straightaway, roosting 40 feet of dirt in his wake. One of the special races was for a group called the Benevolent Portuguese Brotherhood and

Tech Tips

THE INTAKE CALCULATION

T

he modern Harley-Davidson induction system is a great set-up. The Keihin Constant-Velocity carburetor and the Delphi fuel injection system are some of the best in the industry. We’ve addressed these in past TECH TIPS - so I’ll detour around great detail, but it’s worth repeating just a few items of interest. No pretense of objectivity whatsoever, I feel fuel injection beats carburetion hands down. The CV carb can be improved with an inexpensive, higher volume accelerator pump nozzle. The aftermarket even makes an adjustable pump. Both alleviate the fuel delivery issue with mild performance upgrades that would otherwise dictate replacing the carburetor. With either system, EFI or carb, what does one do when it comes time to replace that tired 88 or 96 incher with some sort of fire breathing monster because all of your bros are running big numbers at the quarter mile on weekends? Well, in addition to spending a gazillion dollars on beefing up the entire drive train to support all that extra power, a larger induction system is also a must. Here’s what ya need to know. In the world of intake, bigger is only better to a point. You’ve probably heard the phrase “over-carbureted.” In fluid dynamics, Bernoulli’s Principle states that a region of fast flowing fluid (air) exerts lower pressure on its surroundings than a region of slow flowing fluid.

The Venturi effect applies Bernoulli’s principle to show that when fluid flows through a constriction, it must increase in speed. As the restriction (intake Venturi) gets larger, intake velocity slows down. While you are gaining top-end power, lower end power suffers as well as throttle response. For street bike performance we want to find the happy medium

that gives us something that will behave on the street and give us the horsepower numbers for the strip. For that we have math! Unless you just dig crunching numbers this gets a bit dry - so hang with me. The formula to use is (RPM x Bore x Bore x Stroke) divided by 108,000. Take the square root of that final number. In our project bike, we replaced the 96” engine with a JIMS 120” race engine. The stock Delphi induction module was not enough to feed this behemoth, so here is how the numbers went. Max RPM the engine is set to run is 6500. The bore size (4.125) squared equals 17.02. Stroke is 4.5. Divide this figure (497,880.00) by 108,000 to get 4.61. The square root of this figure is 2.147. This is represented in inches so we’ll want to convert to mm as most carbs and throttle bodies are specified in metric. So, we take 2.147 x 25.4 = 54.5338. This figure is nominal for a single cylinder engine. For a V-Twin, add 15 to 20 percent. On race motors, we lean closer to 20% and we end up with 65mm and change. No coincidence, in the Throttle Hog line of EFI induction modules S&S offers a 58mm, 66mm, and a 70mm. The 66mm fits the bill. Here it is next to the stock throttle body we are replacing.

This should do well if combined with all of the appropriate, well matched parts. Additional information can be found www.twogunnerscustomiron.com. See us on Facebook

A dog lover, whose female dog came “in heat,” was concerned about keeping it and her male separated. But she had a large house and she believed that she could keep the two dogs apart. However, as she was drifting off to sleep, she heard awful howling and moaning sounds. She rushed downstairs and found the dogs locked together and unable to disengage, as frequently happens when dogs mate. Unable to separate them, and perplexed as to what to do next, although it was very late at night, she called her Vet, who answered in a very grumpy voice. After she explained the problem to him, the Vet said, “Hang up the phone and place it down alongside the dogs. I will then call you back and the noise of the ringing will make the male lose his erection and he will be able to withdraw.” “Do you think that will actually work?” she asked. “Just worked on me.” he dryly replied. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------A husband and wife were shopping in their local supermarket. The husband picked up a case of beer and put it in their cart. “What do you think you’re doing?” asked the wife. “They’re on sale, only $20 for 24 cans” he replies. “Put them back, we can’t afford them,” the wife demanded. They carried on shopping. A few aisles further on, the wife picked up a $40 jar of face cream and put it in the cart. “What do you think you’re doing?” asked the husband. “It’s my face cream. It makes me look and feel pretty” replied the wife. Her husband retorted: “So does 24 cans of beer, and it’s half the price.” -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Norman, an old retired Navy sailor, puts on his old uniform and heads for the docks once more, for old times’ sake and hopefully, some hot sex. He engages a lovely prostitute and takes her up to a “by the hour” room. He’s soon going at it as well as he can for a guy his age, but needing some reassurance, he asks, ‘How am I doing?’ The prostitute replies, ‘Well Norman, ya’ old salty dawg, you’re doing about three knots.’ ‘Three knots?’ he questions. She says, ‘You’re knot hard, you’re knot in, and you’re knot getting your money back.’ --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If things come to those who wait, maybe the things left were by those who got there first. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Why isn’t there an abbreviation for such a long-ass word as: abbreviated or abbreviation? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------A man walks into a bar looking sullen and depressed. “Bartender!” he shouts, “Give me three shots of tequila!” The bartender replies, “Sure thing pal. You look like shit. What’s the matter, buddy?” “It’s my brother,” the man answered. “He came out of the closet today. I just found out he’s gay and I’m havin’ a rough time dealin’ with it.” “Wow, man, that’s rough. Consider these drinks on the house.” A week later, the same man walks into the bar. “Bartender!” he shouts, “Give me six shots of tequila!” “Damn!” replied the bartender, “You look even worse now than you did last week! What’s the matter with you this time?!” “It’s my son,” the man answered. “This time he came out of the closet, now I’m dealin’ with him bein’ gay!” “Oh man. These drinks are on me pal, here ya’ go.” Another week goes by, and the man returns to the bar a third time. “Bartender, give me nine shots of tequila!” “Dang buddy, doesn’t anybody in that family of yours eat poontang?!” “Yeah,” replied the man, “Apparently my wife does!”. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------An Irish man has a good memory. While reading an article last night about fathers and sons, memories came flooding back to the time I took me son out for his first pint. Off we went to our local pub only two blocks from the cottage.I got him a Guinness. He didn’t like it, so I drank it. Then I got him a Kilkenny’s, he didn’t like that either, so I drank it. Finally, I thought he might like some Harp Lager? He didn’t. I drank it. I thought maybe he’d like whisky better than beer so we tried a Jameson’s; nope! In desperation, I had him try that rare Redbreast, Ireland’s finest whisky. He wouldn’t even smell it. What could I do but drink it! By the time I realized he just didn’t like to drink, I was so chit-faced I could barely push his stroller back home.
