ovember - a time to reflect on how grateful we are to live in this country. It is thanks to our Veterans both young and old that we have been and still are a free country. So let’s make sure to show our appreciation to our veterans at every opportunity to show as a reminder of how important they are to this country as we celebrate Veterans Day on November 11th. We as free people must never forget the sacrifices that have been made and the ones that continue to be made every day by our military members and their families. It is with a heavy heart that we write this as so many of our friends and neighbors have suffered greatly with the fires that have ravaged Northern California and are still burning at this time. There has been huge property loss and unfortunately every time we turn on the news the number of lives lost to this disaster just keeps growing. It is a helpless feeling to witness this kind of disaster unfold as our neighbors had only minutes to literally run for their lives and then losing everything they own in the fires. From what we keep hearing the need for $$ and volunteerism is great but what is not needed is your old used clothing items and furniture that seems to pile up with all the right intentions, but ends up drawing personnel away from other needs to manage the onslaught of stuff being donated. Meanwhile the shelters are asking for volunteers to help so donating your time instead is going to be of more service to the victims at this time. We are hoping to catch up with some of our friends soon to see what we can do to help them specifically. I am sure that there will be fundraising events coming to give our biker community an opportunity to do what we do best and that is raise money for people in need. So if you are planning something please let us know so we can help you spread the word. In the mean time, our thoughts and prayers go out to all that have been affected; and our admiration and sincere appreciation go out to all the firefighters and first responders that have risked life and limb to help others in some cases while their own houses burnt to the ground. Toy Run season is also upon us once again so it’s time to get in that holiday spirit and give, I am sure this year that the need will be greater than usual in and around the communities that have been devastated by the fires so consider catching one or two of the Toy Runs out of your normal home base to make sure that all the children and their families who have been uprooted still have a Christmas even though they will be living in less than an ideal situation. Now I’m pissed off as all hell and I gotta say something! As I was growing up I was always taught to have honor and to face my fears, my problems and adversity standing, face to face. I was taught to face my opponents and my enemies standing up face to face! I was taught to respect others. All others! It didn’t matter if they were older, younger, male, female or what color or religion they were, just respect all others and treat them the way you want to be treated. I was taught to stand and respect our National Anthem, our flag and our Nation, and to this day I hold them in the highest regard with the up most respect! I don’t agree with the way some police officers try to abuse their power and miss-treat people. Over the years I have been punched, dragged on the ground and hit several times with a club and had my life threatened and had my house raided because of false accusations and I had ammunition and new shoes stolen during the raid by the police. There was nothing I could about it, it was my word against theirs. And I believe it was because I’m a biker with…..biker associations. I don’t trust the police but I don’t hold any ill will towards them either. I treat them with respect. I treat them the way I want to be treated. I don’t agree with racism or like the way our nation is divided, but I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else. My Grandmother, as a child was an indentured servant brought in from Mexico, under her circumstances this was a polite word for slave. I remember as a very young child being in a store with my mother, brother and sister and some rat faced looking bastard saying, “Get those spics out of here, I don’t want them in my store!” I remember my mom crying and telling the lady “I just want to buy shoes for my kids.” I can assure you, I know what racism, prejudice and injustice feels like. I hold no ill will towards rat faced looking bastards. It’s just best if we stay away from each other. I don’t agree with some of our government and politicians. I don’t agree with some of the shit they try to pass or shove down our throat, when it’s plain as day and obvious they are lying and cheating and have ulterior motives for their self gain. We’re not stupid, we see it! The list is way too long to go into, but I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else.
What a great country we live in! Because of the first amendment I can say this without fear of me and my family being imprisoned or severely beaten by the federal government. After all this is said and done, I still stand with pride and respect for our National Anthem. During a football game, if you catch a kick off or punt in the end zone and take a knee that means “I give up, I won’t run, the play is over”. If you have the ball on the field and your knee touches the ground, your play is over. If you’re in a boxing ring and you take a knee they stop the fight for 8 seconds and is considered a serious sign of weakness. Taking a knee is also called Genuflection which is bending one knee to the ground to show a gesture of respect to your superiors, in reverence or worship. Let’s face it, what’s his name, the ex 49er started taking a knee last year to protest against oppression and injustice for people of color and police brutality in America. Did the protest change anything or bring our Nation closer together? No! It just raised the wrong kind of controversy and pissed off a lot of patriotic Americans who are so disgusted with the disrespect to our flag they can care less about him or his cause. In fact, it did more damage than good. If you want to gain support from the American people you probably shouldn’t piss them off by disrespecting their flag and National Anthem. All it did was create another divide and changed his status from ex 49er to ex football player, which really frees up his Sunday’s now, so he can have more time to go protest. The fact is, there is still police brutality, oppression and injustice for not just people of color but people in America! Now I ask you! How would you deal with this? On your feet or on your knees?! ith all the wildfires presently ravaging Northern California, we thought it might be appropriate to reprint a ride destination we did a couple of years ago. In it, we included the story of the Granite Mountain Hotshots. Their fight for survival makes you realize the risks these firefighters take every time they’re called on. There is also a fine new movie out that details their story. It’s called “Only the Brave‘.

With the arrival of late fall and colder weather, we kinda did the snow bird thing again and rolled on down to the warmer climes of the Arizona desert – specifically to Tempe, AZ in the Valley of the Sun for a couple of weeks of baseball and riding. Not too bad! Our big adventure for the trip was up to Sedona via SR89 and 89A. Starting out early in the morning from Tempe, we took I10 to the 303 and after catching

SR93, made our way into Wickenburg. From there we putted out into the desert on SR89.It’s very scenic all around, especially the looming Weaver Mountains ahead. Once in those mountains, you’ll enjoy lots of twists and switchbacks before pulling into the small town of Yarnell. A couple of years ago the town made the news because of the devastating Yarnell Hill Fire that took the lives Verde Valley Outside Jerome
of 19 members of the Granite Mountain Hotshots. Hotshots are firemen that deal with all kinds of wildfires. When needed they will travel from state to state risking all to protect people and property. There are 107 such organizations in the U.S. Outside Yarnell that day, 20 Granite Mountain members answered the call of duty. They were up in the rocky hills fighting a large brush and scrub fire when the wind shifted, blowing the fire in the direction of town. Although in a safe burnt out area, they decided to try and race down and get ahead of the fire. With windblown fireballs starting new fires, they ended up getting trapped. Hurriedly they made a clearing and deployed their protective fire blankets, but the fire was too close and too hot. Only one came back. The only member to make it out had been assigned as the lookout. After informing his guys of the wind shift via radio and wife fire coming toward him, a member of another hotshot team drove in and got him down to safety. 8300 acres and 127 structures were destroyed. As for firefighters, except for 9/11, it was the largest loss of life in almost 100 years. www.outsideonline.com. Search for 19-True-Story. After breakfast at the

Family Diner, we checked out the memorial for the Granite Mountain crew. Not quite completed, it will eventually be situated in a beautiful little park. A larger state park is also in the works. www.yarnellhillmemorialfund.org. Up the street a bit, you’ll also find the Shrine of St Joseph (the patron saint of Happy Homes). Built up on the rocky hillside, you follow a rustic path and along it are the fourteen stages of the cross. Jesus from the last supper to his placement in the tomb. A perfect place for some quiet and solitude. The Shrine was also a casualty of the fire. The stations themselves were mostly spared, but several outbuildings such as the retreat and gift shop were destroyed. www.stjoseph-shrine.org. Back on SR89 we made our way up to Prescott. Enjoyed the cruise through the valley and then the nice twisty mountain ride about 10 miles out of town. Since the Granite Mountain Hotshots were based out of Prescott, we stopped by the firehouse. Fireman Ralph Lucas was very informative and gave us a good rundown on the whole event. He also directed us to the gravesite memorial. Impressive and sobering at
the same time. A little ways out of Prescott we jumped on 89A and headed out across the valley floor to our next stop, Jerome. As you enter the mountains again, the pavement begins to twist and bend. See a pattern here? Once at the top, the view down into the Verde Valley is awesome! Way in the distance, you can actually see the red cliffs around Sedona. Jerome reminds you of one of those European villages. Not the structures, but the narrow streets and that the city is built up high on the side of the mountain. We decided to take a break at the Vaqueros Cantina. Some chips and salsa sounded good. Nice place, nice town. On the road again, it was down the mountain and on to Sedona. As you near Sedona, the scenery becomes more and more spectacular. Huge red rock outcroppings and color laden cliffs. Since we got a deal, we checked into the Sedona Rouge Hotel and spent the rest of the day enjoying the sights and walking through town. We had to get back to Phoenix the next day, so our trip was only an overnighter. We still wanted to see Red Rock State Park though. So after a nice breakfast at the Coffee Pot, we took the Red Rock Loop down to the park. Lots of hiking trails to go along with the visual treats. Red Rock Crossing is also a must. It’s up the loop road apiece and located in Crescent Moon Park. A short hike along Oak Creek and you’ll be practically at the base of the famous Cathedral Rock. As much as we hated to, it was time to head out. We chose the Sedona Scenic Hwy (SR179) as our route out of town. Aw, the sights! It was a great couple of days. 2018 INDIAN SCOUT BOBBER
The all new Indian Scout Bobber is definitely an impressive machine with a liquid cooled 100 hp engine that puts out 72 foot pounds of torque. Weighing in at 554 pounds with a full tank of gas, we are talking some serious power to weight ratio! On top of that, I was surprised with how comfortable my 6 foot frame was on this bike; I was expecting to be kind of crunched up, but actually it fit me quite well. It looks to me like Indian has taken some styling cues from the Hooligan Flat Track scene. A lot of the guys into that have been picking up Indian Scouts due to how well they perform in that environment and modifying them for the track and they end up looking a lot like this new Indian Bobber. My take on the ride is that this is ideal for the guy or gal that loves to hit the back roads with a light, nimble motorcycle that also has the power to back up its aggressive look and yet is a blast to ride.
2018 INDIAN SPRINGFIELD DARKHORSE
I really like the looks of this motorcycle! I just dig the all blacked out style of this bike and since I have not ridden a Springfield before – I was excited to jump on board to get a good feel. There would be just a few items I would personalize, but for a stock motorcycle this one is hard to beat. The solo seat was very comfortable and I felt at home right away riding this bike through some of the back roads in the foothills around C&E Auburn Indian and V-Twin. You can also pick up a passenger seat as an accessory if you want to ride two up on occasion. The new Indian Springfield Darkhorse comes with the new fender and a 19” front wheel that not only looks nice up there but handles very well in all riding environments. The windshield is a quick release so you can keep it completely clean looking up front, or protect yourself from the elements as needed. For me, it does not matter how good a motorcycle looks, it has to perform and this Indian does that - with ease. This was one of those demo rides that I did not want to bring the bike back - I was THAT impressed with it. If you are the type of rider that loves to log some miles but do not like the fairing or prefer a clean front end on your motorcycle - you need to give this one or one of the other Indian Springfield a serious look because this is one fine ride. I
can’t remember a year where there was so much devastation worldwide. Floods, earthquakes, fires, attacks on human life, just to name a few of the things people around the world are going through. Recently, we had mass shootings in Las Vegas, Category 4 hurricanes hit the US shores on the east coast, major flooding in the south, and devastating fires all over the state of California. Just here in Northern California, we are experiencing unthinkable fires throughout the beautiful Napa Valley, Butte counties, and even in our own backyard near Lake Wildwood with the Lobo Fire. So far, as of this writing, 17 people have lost their life to fire and 180 people are missing. There were 58 people who lost their lives in Las Vegas and hundreds more who are no longer with us from the crazy hurricanes throughout the Caribbean and the US. In contrast, I have officiated a 50-year marriage celebration, I picked up a donation of 2 electric wheel chairs valued at over $20,000 so we were able to gift to a single mother of 3 with one of her children being a paraplegic who’s chair broke down. I had the privilege of ministering to an addicted homeless man who through his tears of pain and anguish accepted Christ as his savior and began a new story for his life. We have another homeless man named Ron who found Thunder Road Church as a place of acceptance and now has been attending every week for the past 2 months. He is beginning to socialize with others and is coming out of his shell. In the first scenario, our hearts break for these people and we begin wondering what we can do to help these families re-establish their lives. We want to give money, food, clothing, shelter, or anything else we can help with. Some folks take time off work to travel to these devastated areas to give of their time, their talents, and or their treasures. Our hearts are
saddened for the loss of life and our souls are confused about the loss of life by an evil group or individual. Either way, we rally as a country and community to “come together” in hopes to make a difference. To build a stronger country, a stronger community, and maybe teach our children a lesson of giving back and being grateful for what we do have no matter how much or how little. The second scenario may fill our hearts with good feeling that there are others trying to make a difference. Here is the question: Why do we have to wait for devastation or evil to rally as a community or country to help others, to love others, or reach out to others. Breaking the stigma of hate and indifference should not take the loss of life or property to bring people together. This should be a wakeup call to all of us to start remembering the golden rule; “Treat others as you would want to be treated”. It seems like such a simple request, yet for many of us, it’s hard to remember. Every color, creed, religion, and ethnic background has been represented in the death toll in 2017, so we give, cry, and pray for everyone. Shouldn’t that be a daily practice for all of us? (including me) And the answer must be, YES! If we want healing for this great nation, healing for our families, and healing for our communities; the answer must be, YES! Have a Blessed Thanksgiving and truly be thankful for what you have and give to those in need. All of those! INTERNATIONAL RIDE DESTINATION:
Southern Italy “E
very new beginning comes from some other beginning’s end”… (Lucius Annaeus Seneca-Roman Philosopher) and so fresh off a recent 2000+ mile Harley trek across middle America with my Moonshiners MC Club has now lead my wife Mary and I across the pond to ride the beautiful and historic region of Puglia (Apulia) in southern Italy, motorcycling through the communes of Bari, Taranto and Corigliano Calabrio. This region is better known as the “boot” of Italy, with gentle rolling hills and seascapes of pristine aqua blue waters and sandy beaches, WW II remnants and relics of Castles and monuments from centuries past. Accepting a gracious invitation as guests of Giuseppe Pallini (Big Joe), President and Founder of Shotgun MC of Taranto, Italy (a Brother and friend of ours from a former club,) we charted a trip that included 3 plane changes and several hours of delays in order to get to Bari. Upon our arrival in Bari, first order of business was meeting the members of Shotgun MC who were waiting patiently for us in Taranto, about 70 minutes away. Because the Harley dealer was closed, we caged to their clubhouse from the Bari airport (our rental Harley would wait until the next day.) The Shotgun MC members welcomed our late arrival with a burger BBQ and libations, i.e. J.D. shots! With the help of one of the brother’s Canadian girlfriend-Katie, and a downloaded Google app to assist, communication commenced as the language barrier would not deter sharing stories of our long 17 hour journey, our motorcycle rides, politics (yes our President was big news in Italy) and just plain BS for hours. We were very fortunate to be there that evening to meet newly patched Brother Jango from Shotgun’s new Chapter in France. He spoke some English and we spoke no French, so we chattered on about spectacular motorcycle riding in the South of France- something we will put on the bucket list. After much bantering in half understood translations, we soon engaged in another
activity that would become a daily ritual during our stay, a run to the gelato store (1:40 am in this casemany are open 24 hrs) to savor the delights of their dessert culture… pistachio and chocolate chip being our favorites. The next morning, we quickly hightailed back to Bari eager to get on the Harley and eye the sights of what Southern Italy had to offer. Many thanks to Bari Harley-Davidson® Manager Antonio, for holding our 2016 Ultra an extra day. After signing many legal documents in Italian that god knows what I signed, we were now ready to roll! Greeting us at the Dealer for our first ride were members of Shotgun MC- Big Joe, Psycho and Hulk Hogan. Most members of Shotgun MC ride Harleys except Hulk, who sported an offshore V-twin (frowned upon jokingly from other club members.) It should be noted that Harleys are a rare motorcycle breed in Italy, because of their cost, size (scooters run the roads supreme), and maintenance. This would be noticeable in many communities, as whenever we stopped our bikes, the bikes garnered studied looks from the locals. Now excited to be forging onward with Big Joe and our escorts, we rumbled on down Highway SS16 to the Adriatic coastal town of Polignano a Mare, with origins dating back to 4th century BC, and

storied home of famed singer Domenico Modugno, better known as the Italian singer of the infamous song-Volare (used in Dodge commercials in the 80’s). The temps were perfect in mid 80’s with slight humidity and scattered clouds that made for perfect riding. Polignano a Mare is best described in literature as the “Pearl of the Adriatic,” a Renaissance town with bits of architecture style influenced from Arab, Byzantine, Spanish and Norman cultures, including a 13th century church we saw nestled in the village overlooking this Cliffside community. The pristine blue lagoons skirting this aged village provided jaw dropping settings fitting for romantic gatherings, including weddings, which we happened to witness this day. That aside, what stood out for us besides the scenic beauty, was the fresh delicious seafood served here at Ristorante Meraviglioso. Fresh mussels garlic and butter in a cast iron pot, marinated octopus and deep fried shrimp served with cod fish finished with a local brewed beer with its own ice holder, sufficed as the perfect lunch of the day. As the skies began welling up as they do in these humid coastal areas, we headed off to beat the rain. Motoring down the country back roads of SS172dir, we experimented with the 2 fingered American wave to other bikers to see how universal this sign was across all lands. We didn’t elicit much responses other than the few V twin riders who waved, honked their horns or flashed lights back. That said, the scooter and adventure bikes had no interest in returning our friendly gestures, or maybe Italians are too busy riding like Valentino Rossi to notice us foolishly waving Americans? Continuing onto SS172, we started to notice some peculiar homes dotting the roadside on the way to the enchanting village of Alberobello. It felt as if we were entering a fairy wonderland as these homes were everywhere entering the downtown area. These strange houses are internationally known as Trulli. These odd unique cylindrical structures features stone roofs, many Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 17
with painted symbols on top (for mystical reasons we presume) with no two looking alike. Trulli date back to the 14th century and according to historical sources, the Trullo’s dry-wall construction, without mortar structure, was imposed on new settlers so they couldn’t dismantle their shelters quickly: a means to evade taxes on new settlements under the Kingdom of Naples, and a proven way to turn away unruly lords wanting their money. Funny, times never change, the tax man always cometh on all continents! After taking in the local sites and sounds of this engaging village, we took cover to duck some passing showers and found a café to enjoy local espressos, poured in a thimble size cup but with the kick of a mule! As the showers eased, we motorcycled back South on highway SS172 to the Piazza Maria Immacolata in downtown Taranto where all the contemporary shopping is done in the city. We were fortunate to be gifted the most glorious Italian sunset capping off our fantastic day of riding and of course, taking in a little more gelato! Thinking we would retire for the day, our host had other plans and scurried us off to another part of town to enjoy a king’s feast at the restaurant La Locanda del Macellaio. The specialty of this restaurant was meat (Bombettes-livers, I think), meat (Salsiccia-sausage) and more meat (Tagliata di Angus-ahhh beef!), paired with a salad, and then of course chased with Italian Nastro Azzurro (beer) and Primitivo Italian wine! Oh how we love Italian full course dinners. Our next days ride would begin taking in the history and charm of the ancient city of Taranto, a major commercial and military location for Italy. This original Greek colony dates back to 706 B.C. and boasts a 15th century Aragon Castle and Greek relics of 6th century pillars known as Doric columns from the Temple of Poseidon. A darker part of Taranto’s history includes infamous buildings where Mussolini perched from balconies several stories above the street to deliver his rhetorical speeches to the people back in WW II, something our Italian friends were not proud to boast. A must see stop when visiting Taranto is a visit to the “MARTA” Archaeological Museum. On display are artifacts of past Greek civilizations B.C. and A.D. including 4th-3rd century necropolis, featuring many funerary offerings and gold objects found in tombs. Now being educated about the cultural influences and history of Taranto, we headed south down freeway SP100 to ride along the coast of the Ionian Sea. Since it was Sunday, the many beaches we rode past were heavily populated with the locals soaking in the sun and bronzing their Mediterranean complexions. We pulled over at one point to marvel at the country’s natural sand dunes, only to notice these splendid wonders stood ground for something more ominous, WW II pill gun boxes overlooking the populated sand wonders. New Harley-Davidson® OF ROCKLIN Opening

ig news coming to Northern California with the new Harley-Davidson® of Rocklin opening mid November! Outside of Sacramento, opening on the very busy Interstate 80 corridor with easy access taking the Sierra College exit. This area has seen huge growth both in residential and retail businesses with stores like Cabela’s and a new Costco and more on the way. There are also plans for over four hundred new homes to be built in the nearby area as well and this trend has no sign of slowing down. The new dealership is locally and family owned by the Guidera family so you can expect to see the same great customer service that you are accustomed with at Harley-Davidson® of Folsom. Also you will see other familiar faces greeting you as you come in with Jim Hill scheduled to move to this new store as well as Steve Zarwell and others. At 30,000 square feet, the new dealership will be two and a half times larger than its Folsom brother. This new store promises to be a rider and shopping experience like no other. This move is a testament that the Guidera family dealership has been able to maintain its resiliency after closing the old Rocklin store after the economy hit the skids back in 2008. It is a good sign for all of us who love to ride motorcycles that the economy is coming back around and the industry is confident and strong. The timing could not be better to coincide with the motor company’s largest roll out of
new models in its history, with a goal of attracting new riders to the brand while promising great products for their faithful customers now and into the future. BIKETOBERFEST October 7 (Sacramento): Well you know fall has arrived when it is Biketoberfest time. There was no better way to cap off a full day of riding than to go to this event. It was a nice warm day, so it turned into one of those perfect NorCal evenings, not too hot or too cold. It’s the kind of night that makes for a perfect party and that is just what was going on at the Sacramento Red and White clubhouse. Huge shout out to all the volunteers who worked hard to make sure everyone was well fed and properly hydrated. Local favorite biker band Rogue was on stage killing it with all of the tunes that will put you in the mood to have fun. The Club presented plaques of appreciation to some peeps that go the extra mile within the community to help out. They were all familiar faces and clubs that we all see making efforts throughout the community every month of the year. I could tell that it made them all feel good being recognized for their efforts. There were tons of raffle prizes to be won and later in the evening a wet T-shirt contest - but most of those pictures were rated too risqué for print ;). As the dust all settled and I headed out, the cool night air made for one of those night rides that you just do not want to end as thoughts of a great day and evening of camaraderie laughter and catching up with people were fresh on my mind. 2018 HARLEY-DAVIDSON® FAT BOB This is the motorcycle that I had been itching to get a close look at since it was unveiled at the end of August! Some riders love the look and some hate it; personally after riding it - I don’t care, I want one. Iron Steed Harley-Davidson® provided me with the Milwaukee Eight 114 ci version it also is available with the 107 ci. For my money, I would definitely go for the 114 because this motorcycle is all about performance. With inverted forks up front on a 28 degree rake and dual disc brakes, this bike is ready to ride hard and I was very impressed with its stopping power to go with the instant power that slaps you in the face with a little blip of the throttle from this 114 ci motor. Also a hexagon LED head light that looks like it will do a great job lighting up the road at night. There is no doubt that this is a lot of bike and needs to be respected; but it will do what you ask it to do - just HANG ON because it will do it quickly. To go along with the inverted forks, the 2018 Fat Bob has an adjustable rebound for the rear mono shock. There is a knob that is under the right side of the seat that you can easily adjust for your weight, riding style or if you are riding two up. This bike is a kick in the pants to ride and as soon as I got it on some country roads I was grinning and laughing the rest of the ride. This is one fun bike to ride!

Once again I cannot express enough that you really need to go test ride any of the new Mono Shock frame motorcycles that Harley-Davidson® has unveiled this year. Whether you like the new look or not, it is the ride that really counts and that is where these bikes shine. The Low Rider kept with a more traditional look from the past with the really cool retro graphics on the 5 gallon gas tank and plenty of chrome. With the Milwaukee Eight 107 ci engine this motorcycles is a dream to ride. The seat holds you firmly in place in a comfortable riding position for an all day adventure. Out of all the new HarleyDavidson® models that I have ridden so far, this model has the most stable and predictable ride quality and is also the most comfortable if you love to log the miles. STREET VIBRATIONS FALL RALLY 2017 September 27-October 1 (Reno - Virginia City - Carson City, Nevada): Could you feel the streets vibrating in Nevada? If not you must not have made it to Street Vibrations this year because the weather was perfect and the crowds were up everywhere we went. Motorcycles were rumbling all through northern Nevada and up around Lake Tahoe, everywhere you went there were motorcycles. We have said this before but we will say it again if you don’t have a great time during Street Vibrations – it is your own damn fault. Downtown Reno was ground zero as the streets were once again full of vendors. In the Reno Ballroom, Mondo Porras was back big time hosting the Denver’s Choppers 50th Anniversary Bike Show. The bikes were absolutely amazing so if by chance you did not get to the Reno Ballroom this year do not miss this big attraction next year!

On any day, we always enjoy the ride to historic Virginia City, but this time of year the streets are packed with bikes of every make and model with the people are just as unique as the bikes. It’s a great place to people watch and it is always hopping! Down in Carson City at Battle Born Harley-Davidson®, Kirbys Law returned as a main sponsor and the entire place was jammin’ and overflowed into the rest of the industrial park as the surrounding streets and parking lots were full of motorcycles! If you have never made it here make sure you do next year, this is a huge dealership with a very helpful and friendly staff. They have a huge parking lot with several industry vendors offering the latest and greatest parts for your ride. Plus there was a big stage with live music along with the largest beer garden just for this event, but this is the only dealership that I have been to with a bar inside throughout the year. The West Coast Connection stunt riders were on hand doing their thing entertaining the crowd! As we rolled home late Sunday as the event came to a close we could not help but to reflect on all the sights, sounds
and good times enjoyed by all at this year’s Street Vibrations FALL RALLY. Congratulations to the promotion team at Roadshows for another great job providing a top notch event for west coast riders to enjoy. 21st Annual Black Widows Poker Run
October 7 (Sacramento):Early Saturday morning riders rolled in packs to VFW Post 67 on Stockton Boulevard. We have wanted to do this one for a few years, so we were excited to finally be able to participate in this one with the Shriners Hospitals for Children of Northern California as the beneficiary. All motorcycles were welcome, with a riders ticket included a t-shirt, chicken or pig roast dinner, poker hand, live music and entry into the grand prize drawing which was a very nice Weber gas grill donated by Emigh Ace Hardware. As we left the VFW Hall, the first stop was just down the block to the Shriners Hospital where riders got an up close look at this regional pediatric medical center. Shriners Hospitals provides specialized care and rehabilitation to children with congenital conditions and complex medical needs regardless of a families’ ability to pay.
The Shriners Hospital Associate Director of Development, Melissa Wood was there greeting all the riders as they road in. She was happy to share the appreciation for each rider that was present, as well as answer questions about the role of the Shriners Hospital. I think every rider that talked to her went away feeling that they were definitely making a positive impact on a child’s life as well as their entire family. One of the ride sponsors went above and beyond, Bobby T and Jessy road in delivering a huge bag of stuffed animals in their side hack for the children at the hospital. It was very nice to see that the Shriners Hospital was so appreciative of the Black Widows. Originating in 1996, the Black Widows describe themselves as a modest group of riders with a good sense of humor and a desire to help.

Next up was the Freeport Inn, the gateway to the California Delta followed by a beautiful ride through the delta stopping at Foster’s Bighorn in Rio Vista, before heading back toward Sacramento and making one more poker stop at Tony’s Place in Walnut Grove. It was a picture perfect day to ride along the Sacramento River. By now we were all hungry, so it was time to return to the VFW Post 67 who generously donated all of the food for the fundraiser as the Jeff Watson Band was rocking the house. continued... With the help of many volunteers - Black Widows, Inc. President, Jamey along with his wife Amber work tirelessly throughout the year to help collect raffle prizes and get sponsorships for this annual poker run. It was today that TRM NorCal learned that their family had a personal experience that has made them forever grateful to the Sacramento Shriners Hospital. It was five years ago, their daughter Karen then 15 years old was struck by a car walking home from the city bus. It was two hours later when her parents learned that she was in an accident and sent to a local hospital. Once they arrived, they were told that the injuries to her arm and leg were so severe that it would require amputation of both limbs. Jamey was already involved with the Black Widows at the time and was not willing to accept that prognosis; he decided to
get a second opinion and contacted the Shriners Hospital. The hospital immediately sent two surgeons over to check out the situation. After a close look at Karen’s injuries, they decided that amputation would not be necessary. Now, 20 years old – Karen is the secretary of Black Widows, Inc and you would never have known that she almost lost her arm and a leg. Thank God that the Shriners Hospital stepped in or Karen’s life would be completely different today! ‘It’s not rocket science’ is often the response given when asked “How did you learn to ____?” (fill in the blank) Having raised 3 children on my own from the ages of 4, 3 & 1, both financially and spiritually you quickly learn life is about time or money. Well it seems I never had enough of either, and any little disruption would set off a catalyst of unsurmountable events. Having to entrust the lives of 4 to the mercy of some outside entity always proved to be a mistake costing me both financially and emotionally. So I stopped taking my lives issues to “The Experts” and took on every bump that life presented me. Plus, I got tired of throwing money at fixes when I realized “I paid how much for you to do what?” I had always wanted a Harley, in my mind it stood for freedom and in 2000 I had finally saved enough money penny by penny to buy my first. I had spent a lot of time as a passenger, but had never ridden other than having attended and passed the Safety Course in order to get my M1 license and as soon as it came in the mail I went straight to Oakland H-D and found my first bike. Now I’m practical and a realist so my mindset was ‘if I’m going to drop a bike, (cuz I was certain at some point it would happen with the lack of experience I had had) I would much rather it be an $8K bike vs $18K’. I purchased a 2000 883 Sportster Custom as it had forward controls to accommodate my long legs, it was all black and looked just like a mini Dyna. After paying for it, cash, I hopped on it and for one brief second had a moment where I thought, ‘OMG, I’m getting on 880 in Oakland during commute with no insurance and what 8 hours of riding experience!’… and then I let that negative, self-defeating thought go and adopted my current attitude that has gotten me through everything in my life, it’s like a protective shield to my soul… I ask myself ‘What’s the worst that is gonna happen?’… well in truth, the worst thing that could happen in life is that I would die… and that’s when I had the epiphany… ‘Hell, my reservations are all good upstairs, the hard part is living - not dying’ and with that I have been off and running ever since. I have set no limitations for myself, there’s nothing I won’t tackle or take on if it’s something I want. With raising of my kids, who did not ask to be put on this planet, the phases “I can’t” “I don’t know how” “it’s too hard” where not a luxury I could fall back on, giving up and quitting were not options I HAD to work 2 and 3 jobs and do what was necessary, I was responsible for four lives! Attitude is everything, I had justifiable excuses to throw in the towel on many occasions, but it never felt right sitting on the pitty pot. Each new achievement I accomplished began to build the mountain of confidence I now possess and I respect
me! Thank gawd that I came to the realization that going through life, no matter how difficult will build you into a person who can accomplish feats that surprise even myself! Case in point February 23, 2016, I’m commuting home from San Jose to Stockton on 680 and I am on my Dyna going to Fremont when an impatient Porsche driver decided he wanted my lane and made an immediate right turn into me, and as I screamed “NOOOO!!” and tried to avoid him by veering left - he hit me impaling my left foot and shifter pawl in his front passenger rim, I realized my foot was stuck and with all my force made a sever twist of my T-bars bending the hell out of them, I had wrenched myself out but the moment resulted in me falling the opposite way, so I just laid the bike down on her right side, caved in the tank, twisted the front fender, fork and rim, and touched my helmet on its right side and laid myself on the ground… and as I frantically spun around looking for the driver who just assaulted my bike, I could hear myself scream out in pain as I wondered if I still had a left foot, I couldn’t bring myself to look but I could tell I still had my boot on because I could feel the blood pooling in it. The driver had hit me so hard he had split my primary case in two vertically, as well as broke every knuckle in my foot, every toe had multiple fractures, my big toe was in pieces but the worst was having all the flesh ripped off of my heel. I’ve had two surgeries and it will require a third to hopefully start wearing heels again. Now having spent most of my adult life being responsible for raising my children I didn’t have time to make friends even though I knew a ton of people, it’s just my nature to take care of others, so my recovery began with me just doing what I needed to do for me. 3 days after the accident, I had my first surgery, the following day I got a knee scooter and I was off and rolling, I did everything on my own shopping, doctors’ appointments, went back to work, I spent most of my summer on a floatie at raging waters with a waterproof cast cover, I went to events and participated in life… my favorite activity was and is playing pool, and to the dismay of many a challenger who assumed I was just a weak injured soul until I wiped them mercilessly for underestimating me, and they were left with harassing prodding of friends how they were beat by not only a girl but one with a disability on a knee scooter. I continue to play pool, its my favorite past time because it’s a game that makes you think.

BIKER BAND REVUE:
Ryder Green Band
A
t the age of six, Ryder received his first guitar - a mini Fender electric from his mother. Lisa Green soon realized that Ryder had the potential to go far playing the guitar if the right professionals in the music field gave him instruction. It was through learning at an early age, and that knowing in his heart that he would play on a stage one day that laid the foundation of who Ryder Green is today.
Ryder’s biggest fans are his parents Rory and Lisa Green. They are optimistic for their son and gently guide him to accomplish his dream. When Ryder is playing a venue, you can bet that his parents are somewhere in the audience or the green room, taping the performance or attending to the many logistics it takes to put on a performance. After all Ryder is only 18 and still needs his parent’s wisdom and direction to accomplish his dreams. Between the age of eleven and seventeen, Ryder began playing with bands, opening for others and gaining experience each step of the way. Ryder and The Ryder Green Band went from one gig to many, including the Bistro area of San Francisco. In November of 2016, the Golden Gate Blues Society hosted the International Blues Challenge. The winners were sent to the 33rd International Blues Challenge held in Nashville, Tennessee. The Ryder Green Band won the band category. Although, they didn’t make it to the winners circle, Ryder said he gained a lot of experience being in Nashville, along with the thrill of slinging his guitar over his back and walking around the famous Beale Street in Nashville. Some of Ryder’s biggest influences are Freddie King, Albert King, BB King, Stevie Ray Vaughn,
Eric Clapton, Johnny Winter, Buddy Guy, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Johnny Lang and others. Among the musicians that have accompanied Ryder Green are Jeffray Davis (drums) Derek Fresquez (guitar), Nathaniel Chung (guitar) and Steve Romaine (bass). ost of us out here on the left coast can ride all year, but if you’re in the higher altitudes or live in some of the other colder regions you may end up parking your scoot through a good part of the winter. If this is the case, you’ll want to take care of a few maintenance items to ensure it’s ready to go when spring hits. The first item on the list is your battery. Batteries have a static discharge that will, over time, pull it down to just below useless. Motorcycle batteries are much more susceptible to this than their automotive counterparts. Battery tenders resolve this issue by providing a regulated charge that will bring the battery to a full state of charge and then reduce the output to maintain the battery without overcharging. If you don’t own a battery tender, GET ONE!
They are reasonably priced, easy to use, and it’s not uncommon to get 5 years of service or more from a good, maintenance free battery. Most tenders come with a pigtail that can be installed on the battery, making the connection a breeze. There are many products out there and the nomenclature can vary such as battery tender, trickle charger, and maintenance charger to name a few. Make sure the device you use states clearly in the product literature that it contains a mechanism (circuitry in the power adapter) that prevents overcharging. There are
trickle chargers and low power chargers that do not switch over and can cook your battery. Give it a good bath! Road grime and bugs left on paint finishes for prolonged periods can monkey things up. Don’t store the bike near ozone emitting devices like electric motors, freezers, furnaces, etc. The gasses created by these can deteriorate rubber parts. Changing fluids is important as well. The transmission and primary are not so critical if the mileage on the last change is low, but engine oil is a must. By-products of combustion and condensation can wreak havoc on the inside of your engine. Check tire pressures. Keep them inflated properly while the bike is stored. Last, and definitely not least, is the fuel. Fuel stabilizer is a wonderful thing. Gas sitting stagnant for prolonged periods does nasty things to fuel delivery systems, and doesn’t burn worth a damn either! Add a shot of stabilizer (quantity varies by manufacturer, read the directions) and run the engine for a few minutes to distribute. You can also drain the fuel, but the former option keeps you ready for that occasional warm day that just begs for a ride. If your bike is carbureted, shut off the fuel valve and run the bike until it stalls which will empty the float bowl. Ride safe and good wrenching. A mechanic was removing a cylinder-head from the motor of a Harley motorcycle when he spotted a well-known cardiologist in his shop. The cardiologist was there waiting for the service manager to come take a look at his bike when the mechanic shouted across the garage “Hey Doc, want to take a look at this?” The cardiologist, a bit surprised, walked over to where the mechanic was working on the motorcycle. The mechanic straightened up, wiped his hands on a rag and said, “So Doc, look at this engine. I open its heart, take the valves out, repair any damage, and then put them back in, and when I finish, it works just like new. So how come I make $39,675 a year, a pretty small salary and you get the really big bucks (500 mil a year + bonuses & perks) when you and I are doing basically the same work?” The cardiologist paused, smiled and leaned over, then whispered to the mechanic….. “Try doing it with the engine running.” This bill collector had been calling Rhino for several months and he eventually had to block him. But one day he called from a different number and Rhino answered the phone and the collector said; “Do you know as of today your outstanding bill is one year old?” Rhino said, “Really? How can you tell when a Gold Wing rider is having an affair? His helmet doesn’t match the passengers. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------A biker stops by the local Harley Shop to have his bike fixed. They couldn’t do it while he waited, so he said he didn’t live far and would just walk home. On the way home he stopped at the hardware store and bought a bucket and an anvil. He stopped by the feed store/livestock dealer and picked up a couple of chickens and a goose. However, struggling outside the store he now had a problem: how to carry all of his purchases home. While he is scratching his head he was approached by a little old lady who told him she was lost. She asked, “Can you tell me how to get to 1603 Mockingbird Lane?” The biker said, “Well, as a matter of fact, I live at 1616 Mockingbird Lane. I would walk you home but I can’t carry this lot.” The old lady suggested, “Why don’t you put the anvil in the bucket, carry the bucket in one hand, put a chicken under each arm and carry the goose in the other hand?” “Why thank you very much,” he said and proceeded to walk the old girl home. On the way he says, “Let’s take my shortcut and go down this alley. We’ll be there in no time.” The little old lady looked him over cautiously then said, “I am a lonely widow without a husband to defend me. How do I know that when we get in the alley you won’t hold me up against the wall, pull up my skirt, and ravish me?” The biker said, “Holy smokes lady! I am carrying a bucket, an anvil, two chickens and a goose. How in the world could I possibly hold you up against the wall and do that?” The lady replied, “Set the goose down, cover him with the bucket, put the anvil on top of the bucket and I’ll hold the chickens.” (Hey, old broads get horny too!) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------Two turkeys are standing in their pen shootin’ the chit when one says “what’s up w/ Ed?
