ay is Motorcycle awareness month - a time to remind all the cagers out there that bikes are everywhere – so LOOK OUT and LOOK UP from your phone for us! TRM NorCal would like to send out a reminder to all of us on two wheels that our safety on the road is first and foremost our own responsibility, don’t take it lightly. Always assume that a cager does not see you. Be extra aware in locations where the risk is higher and for God’s sake…SLOW DOWN when in those areas to give your self time to react. That being said, I can’t help but to reflect on a recent FACEBOOK post from Mac of BOLT. Apparently there is talk in our California legislature to put all us riders in some kind of day-glo neon safety vest for our safety! Really? Why? As if that the soccer mom driving her environmentally friendly PRIUS with a “COEXIST” sticker and her kids safely buckled in - driving at 90mph who is late for her spin class…you know…. the one that cuts you off on the freeway because that she is texting her girlfriend to order her a grande quad nonfat, one pump, no whip mocha because she doesn’t have time to stop before class. Yeah…AS IF she will look up from her cell phone BECAUSE you’re wearing bright neon vest! Really!? She barely saw her exit sign as she suddenly crossed three lanes not to miss it! I am kind of tired of being dictated to in this fashion from our state capitol. It seems that their goal must be to put us all in a little box where we will all behave and conform with no personal identity or style to be allowed - much less our personal choice. I have said this before and I will say it again this problem is way bigger than the motorcycle community and our only hope is for huge numbers of citizens to realize that our elected leaders are slowly removing our freedom from us mostly under the guise of “it’s for your safety”. I am not comfortable with uneducated* people deciding for me what is safe for me on my bike. (*As far as I am concerned, if you do not ride – then you are uneducated on the subject of riding and what is required to ride safe.) So instead of forcing us bikers to change – how about our legistrators look closer at the real safety issues! Bottom line, there needs to be a lot more driver education which would benefit not only us riders but everyone who is affected by distracted drivers. Notice…I did not say pass another law! We have plenty of those already…approving a ridiculous 800 to 900 laws under our noses per year! So if your freedom is a subject that is important to you, please let us know and if we get a big enough response - we could turn this mutual concern into a monthly column. But for now…this rant is done! Wait….one more thing, don’t forget to call your mom on Mother’s Day! J Happy Mother’s Day! Ride safe! RIDE FREE RIDE OFTEN

H

ey, hey! We actually had another couple of sunny days roll our way and they just happened to coincide with the George Thorogood concert in Reno. That meant we would definitely be up for a nice weekend of riding. So, we loaded up the bagger and headed over the hill. It’s always an enjoyable ride on I80 in the early spring. Lots of cool fresh air and the snowy mountains make for some great scenery. Reaching Reno mid-afternoon, we checked into the Grand Sierra Resort and Casino. Like several of the casinos in the area, it’s a good place to stay and pretty reasonable. Actually, though, this trip didn’t cost us too much at all. Since we babysit our granddaughter, the kids treated us to a room, VIP tickets to the George Thorogood concert, and meals. Thanks guys! Later that evening we all met downstairs at the Charlie Palmer Steakhouse for dinner. This is an excellent pace to eat. Definitely fine dining! After dinner, we made our way to the ballroom where Thorogood rocked and rolled to a

Thorogood

packed house. Before things got rolling though, we almost made it backstage to the Meet-N-Greet. We melded in with a group that was going back and made it past three ‘check points’ by partially covering up our wrong color badges, but got caught by George’s roady at the last door. Bummer! The next morning, we awoke to a cold but bright sunny day and soon we were off on our day ride. We headed south on Hwy 395 and motored on through Carson City. At Jack’s Valley Road, we made a right and cruised into the little town of Genoa. Anytime we are in the area, we just have to make

a visit to our friends at the Genoa Bar and Saloon. This time would be no exception. Our favorite table next to the fireplace was open, so we laid low for a while and soaked up the warmth. Thawed out, we made our way east out of town and picked up 395 south again. Our next stop would be Topaz Lake. This stretch from Carson City to the lake is really nice this time of year. The snow-covered mountains to the west will definitely grab your attention. As usual, we threw away a little money at the casino, but had a good time doing it. One of these times, we’re going to hit it fairly big again. Onto Hwy 395 one more time, we back-tracked north to SR208 and headed out into the wide-open spaces of Smith Valley. It’s a high desert ride all the way to Yerington. Although about half way there are some twisties along the West Walker River that meander through picturesque Wilson Canyon. Another unique feature along SR208 are the incredibly spooky-looking trees outside of Yerington. I think they are Cottonwoods or maybe a variety of Oak. But I must say, they’re right out of a fairy tale. In Yerington, we caught lunch at a great little mom and pop (literally) restaurant/saloon out on 95A called Sherry’s Stage Stop. Total western décor and menu. The owners wear many hats Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 5

(hostess, cook servers, and sometimes entertainment). Yep, they might even sing a few bars for you. We continued north, skipping Silver Springs by taking the Ramsey Cutoff over to Hwy 50. The plan was to take the short route (SR79) to Virginia City, but they closed it due to the St. Patty’s Day Street Fair/Celebration. That’s OK, so we’ll go the long way via SR341. Sure enough, the party was in full swing when we arrived. C Street was filled with vendors and revelers. OK, time to check out the scene. Later, we finished off our ride with a stimulating ride down Geiger Grade. The scenery, the turns –LOVE IT! Back at GSR, we hooked up with the family for dinner. This time at the Briscola. Everybody thought Italian Food sounded good. And it was. Well, it was a very enjoyable couple of days and can’t wait to come this way again. If you have some time on your hands at one of the Street Vibrations this spring or fall… this would be a good get-out-of-town for a ride trip. Later.

BIKER BAND REVUE: The Greg Golden Band

E

xtremely gifted lead guitarist Greg Golden is no stranger to many of the rock stars in the musical profession. Greg opened the doors of one of the largest single owned music stores in Reno, Nevada called Bizarre Guitar (www.bizarreguitarguns.com) during August 1974. Greg has welcomed just about every accomplished musician there is like Carlos Santana, Merle Haggard, B.B. King, The Doobie Brothers, Eddie Van Halen, Tesla and the list goes on. Greg Golden is also a collector of guitars and guns. His museum houses some of the most exquisite and one of-a-kind guitars in the world, along with guitars owned by top rock stars. Greg uses a modified ’54 Les Paul Goldtop, a ’57 gold top and a 1960 Les Paul custom. Those are the same guitars he has played since the early 70’s. During this interview, Greg beamed from ear to ear when asked about his vault of guitars. Stop by and see his store and museum the next time you’re in Reno. Greg’s musical roots go further back than 1974. His mother sang country music in Vegas and in Reno for many years and encouraged her son. Greg began playing guitar at the age of 7. He learned chords and shortly after began playing country music. His first band took place at the age of 10. By the time he was 13, he started his first rock band called “Axe”. (Axe is slang for guitar). Greg has played with Floyd Rose (widely known for his guitar tremolo invention) Mike Japp,(songwriter for KISS), Chuck Ruff (the original drummer from Edgar Winter), Bud Gaugh, (the original drummer from Sublime), and many other great musicians. The original band was a 3-piece band consisting of guitar, bass and drums. Today they have evolved into a 6 piece rock and blues band, with Greg Golden on lead guitar. Randy Scoles: Vocals - Rich Vocals and a great stage performance. Randy is a full time member of The Greg Golden Band and Rogue. Often singing with both bands in a night, when Rogue and The Greg Golden Band are playing the same venue. Paul Holdgate: Vocals - Rocks the stage with his intense high energy and vocals. He’s accomplished on guitar, but prefers to do vocals…and what a great voice he has. Larry Hart: Bass guitar – Larry has one of the more difficult positions in the band line-up, linking the music to the beat, he does very well. He has a full-throttle rockers style stage presentation. Steve Brown: Drums – has been with the Greg Golden Band since 2014. When Steve is not playing, he’s teaching drums to the next generation drummer rock stars. Steve has over 30 years of professional experience. He’s also a touring and recording drummer. All 4 of the of these band members played with the late Ronnie Montrose Band.

Besides playing well together, they have a tight brotherhood relationship. In 2012, Greg wrote the melody to “Long Way Home” with Paul Holdgate writing the lyrics. The lineup was: Greg Golden: lead guitar, Paul Holdgate: vocals, Brad Lang (formally Y & T) on bass, and the original drummer for REO Speedwagon, Alan Gratzer. The You Tube video was shot by Bryon Evans http://bryonevansfilms.com. At the time of writing this article, there are currently 3,622,684 views on You Tube and over 10,000 likes…now that’s impressive!! In 2014, Reno News & Review awarded the Greg Golden Band best musicians, best band in Reno, and best new album in 2015 and 2016. Redhawk Records producer Frank Hannon released its first album in March 2015 called ‘Greg Golden Band’. Frank Hannon is a NorCal local that is nationally known as the song writer, guitarist and co-founder of the multi-platinum selling rock band - Tesla. He is also a multi-talented solosongwriter with the established Frank Hannon Band. His discography is very impressive - check him out at www.frankhannon.com One of the songs from Greg Golden’s first album ‘Far Away’ was voted as a top 20 new release of a US band by Europe’s Galaxia Radio in 2015. They’re currently working on a second album with producer Frank Hannon. The new album will feature the full line-up of Greg Golden Band, with Frank Hannon (Tesla), Kenny Aronoff (John Mellencamp Band), and Brad Lang (Y & T). Their Latest EP “American Thunder” was released in January of 2017. The Greg Golden Band has been influenced by many of the rock icons of our time and are prepared to entertain their audience with a long list of cover songs, but they also have several sets of their originals…guaranteed to keep you screaming for more. If the Greg Golden Band is not headlining, then they are backing up the headliners like Puddle of Mud, Great White, Frank Hannon Band, Y & T, Gary Hoey and .38 Special just to name a few. Look for them in May, they will open for Jack Russell’s Great White in Sacramento at the Ace of Spades. And on July 7th, they will be on stage at one of the largest biker events in the West…Wenatchee, Washington - Pacific Northwest Bike Fest and Expo. And returning again to Humboldt County on July 21st for the 2nd Annual Hiway 101 Run in Trinidad, California. As well as opening on July 22 for Tesla at Thunder Valley Casino Resort in Lincoln, California. Greg is married to Shanda who is an accomplished model and talented The Vault Collection

YouTube sensation Shanda Golden and In The Vault

photographer. She also is the hostess of a You Tube show called ‘In The Vault with Shanda Golden’ where you can see her interview celebrities in the music world like Alice Cooper’s band, Zack Wylde, members of Korn, Frank Hannon of Tesla, Brad Lang formally of Y&T, hostess along with Greg Golden and anyone else that may drop in! Check her out! Greg is also a graduate of the University of Nevada in Reno with a degree in Business Administration. He obviously put his education to good use when it comes to promoting both stores and the band. When asked “what are your future goals for the Greg Golden Band?” Greg answered without hesitation, “To be the best biker band around and crank out some more killer classic rock albums with Frank Hannon at the helm”.

Jeff Montgomery: Guitar – Jeff has been teaching guitar and bass at the Bizarre Guitar since the early 1990’s. He played a short set with the Greg Golden and Paul Holdgate Presents which were the earliest beginnings of the Greg Golden Band. By 2011, Jeff was a full time member too. Jeff still teaches at Bizarre Guitar with Jeff Montgomery Guitar Instruction. Article and photos contributed by Taleah Ebey of T3 Design Studios / There have been a few line-up changes over the years, however they www.t3designstudios.com all agree that the present members of the Band, are the best fit possible. HK Cycles Swap Meet March 25 (Livermore): Time for HK Cycles annual swap meet. Trucks full of parts and accessories of all kinds were pulling in to set up with the hopes of getting rid of some of the goods they had collected over the years. If you have never been to this, one watch for it next March in Thunder Roads NorCal as this is a great opportunity to buy or sell some cool stuff. If you are in need you will have a good shot at finding it here. Jeff the owner of HK Cycles opens up the good sized parking lot providing BBQ brats and hot dogs for attendees; because you are bound to work up an appetite digging through all the parts to find the one or two you need. HK Cycles is an outstanding shop in Livermore located at 196 Airway Blvd that takes great care of their customers and their bikes whether they are newer or older - they can help you keep your ride in great shape or help you realize your dream bike. HK Cycles also carries a large amount of parts and accessories like leather vests, gloves, glasses, and just about anything else a rider could need. Top Hatters MC Hollister 24th Annual

Bike Blessing

April 9 (Hollister): The Top Hatters MC were well organized and ready for the on-slot of bikers that were getting ready to roll into the town of Hollister. The starting location was Hollister Power Sports to sign up before heading directly over to the Sacred Heart Church for some services before the blessing. Our guesti-mate would be that there were well over a thousand bikes in attendance. Each bike rode through

an archway lined with palm branches two at a time as clergy on either side blessed the bikes and bikers with holy water. Since we had not been blessed yet this year - we paid our way and jumped in at the end of the line. This is by far the largest bike blessing in Northern California and it is amazing how organized and relatively quickly the Top Hatters MC can get all the bikes through. This year, they changed it up a bit and instead of having a BBQ after

the blessing – the club encouraged attendees to take part in the local economy of Hollister and gave out postcards with restaurants in town offering discounts to riders from the bike blessing. I am sure that the local restaurants and shops were very appreciative! Great move Top Hatters MC! Downtown resembled a mini Hollister Rally with all the bikes there. Terri and I jumped in with all the rest and stopped for a nice lunch at one of the sponsor restaurants, before turning our bike north and heading back home. It was really nice to catch up with a lot of our Central Valley friends that we have not seen for a while, we hope to see you all soon again out on the road. Smoking Pig BBQ

March 17 – 18 (Fremont): It was a weekend that was all about supporting Paul and Jessica’s favorite charity, Leukemia Lymphoma Foundation---- by celebrating the whole weekend rich with festivities, music, food and fun! Starting on Friday night was Tommy Castro and the Painkillers playing blues/rock music. Saturday at 11am kickoff in the parking lot was a jumpy house for the kids, face painting, SF Giants mascot running around having fun with everyone, the BBQ cookoff with 3 judges, and a petting zoo with the wild Chihuahua (LOL) and raffle tickets handed out for donations to the charity. Well known bands playing back to back all day included Aki Kumar and Kid Anderson. The day ran into night as we moved into the restaurant for much awaited bay area local - Lydia Pense and Cold Blood - who rocked the house! Mark your calendars now - this event happens every year about this time. Catch you on the next one! Article and photos contributed by Dan Rogers

MY TWO CENTS: YOU EYE BALLING ME? I rode to some biker events a couple of Saturdays ago. I went to work in the morning for a couple of hours to clean the shop, I don’t know how motorcycle frame work can get the shop so dirty but it happens. I cleaned the shop, jumped on my bike and started the ride to a couple different events. I was a little tired and a little wounded from the night before, but all in all it was a great night and I was looking forward to riding to these events. Riding in brisk weather is always good to get your mind right and I was all over it like back hair at a Greek festival. I ended up at an event, it seemed like a lot older crowed than what I usually hang out with but what the hell. I bought a Gatorade because the thought of drinking alcohol was right up there with having a root canal. The Gatorade hit the spot and I felt normal again, when I saw three old bikers standing there, and one of them was a big old boy eyeballing me. I thought naw, I never seen this guy before and the smell of food got my attention, and there it was a little Mexican restaurant!

starting shit with these poor bastards when I thought they were giving me hard looks, when in fact, they were in pain and it was probably time to take their Meds. I give props to those old guys still out there, doing it on two wheels. You really gotta enjoy the ride if you know you’re going to be in pain most of the time. What’s that say about the lifestyle of bikers, old or young? I’ve always said I wouldn’t give it up for all the tequila in Mexico, and when you’re like these guys I just mentioned, well, that’s the true test of time. That’s my two cents, go ride like hell and have fun! Al Cagle. www.rackandpull.com

A couple of tacos sounded like a great idea. On my way there this old bastard is still giving me the stink eye! I thought screw this! I’m gonna go see what his problem is and twist this fools cap back if I have to. As I get closer to them - one of the other bikers turns around and he has a panic look on his face like he just caught his little Johnson in his zipper!

I thought, oh shit, he’s pretty old, and I can hear the guy with the panic look say “I gotta sit down my knees are killing me!” The big old guy with the stink eye said “God, my hip is killing me. Let’s go sit in the restaurant!” This poor guy wasn’t giving me the stink eye or trying to be a tough guy. I could have made a real asshole out of myself for

10th Annual Folsom H.O.G. Spring Breakin’ Out Poker Run March 12 (Folsom): It was a perfect day for riding and Folsom H.O.G. had a well planned ride route for the several hundred bikers who turn out to take part in this annual tradition. Leaving from Harley-Davidson of Folsom the first stop was up the hill to Wally’s Pizza Bar in Cameron Park. From there the route took the riders through the foothills on some of the best backroads around for riding before arriving at the final destination of Beerman’s Brewery in Lincoln where the party got started. If you are ever in Lincoln, Beerman’s Brewery is definitely worth a stop with great beer and food set in the coolest historic building that sets the stage for a great atmosphere. Outside - the street was closed down for this event with vendors as the town filled up with motorcycles. Beerman’s Brewery also provided some delicious complimentary chili for the riders as the band Blackwater was filling up the courtyard with their country vibe in excellent style. Folsom H.O.G. did a fantastic job providing a wide variety of raffle items to win with proceeds going to The Children’s Heart Foundation of California. Article and photos by Stan and Terri Hill

ikers seem to have the biggest hearts when it comes to philanthropy, for reaching out and helping others. Sure, like any demographic, there are some that don’t fit that mold, but I know the majority of bikers just like to give and help. We disguise the charity of helping others with poker runs, black jack runs, bike washes, just to name a few. 99.9 percent of every poker run we attend has a charity or non-profit tied to the event. Meaning that all the proceeds that are gathered are donated to the charity of the organizing event planner. So, when we talk about charity, giving back, helping others, and reaching those less fortunate, pat yourself on the back for helping thousands of people have a little better day. Be it muscular dystrophy, CASA, homeless veterans, childhood cancer, Bikers Against Child Abuse, or the many ministries focusing on bringing hope to those in need, we rely on the Biker community to do “Their Thing”. Now a lot of the people attending these poker runs really don’t take the time to investigate or even know what charity they are supporting as they are just there for the ride, and more importantly, the food. Well riding season is upon us and every weekend we will have an opportunity to participate in some sort of poker run or riding event that is using their proceeds to support some type of non-profit. I would urge each and every one of you to find out the charity that you are giving your donations to. It doesn’t take much, but a brief chat at their booth to find who and why they are helping. Here is why: Every one of us has a burden for something that the Lord has placed in us to make a difference. Could be homeless veterans, abused kids, broken marriages, addicted teens, inmates just getting out of prison, childhood cancer, abused animals, etc. Whatever it is, it moves you when you hear about that particular subject. When you see a picture of a 6-yearold fighting for his life because of cancer, it moves you. When you witness a hero that gave part of his life for his country who is starving and living out of a basket, it breaks you. When you hear of a child who is afraid of leaving their house because of bullies, it pisses you off. Or, you see an animal who has been severely starved

to the point of emancipation, it breaks your heart. This my friend is a burden you can feel and a prompting that you may want to spend some time helping eradicate the problem. This gives us purpose, perspective, and camaraderie towards a common good. When you help the least of these; veterans, children, animals, brothers, sisters, you are actually helping the Lord. We are all here for a purpose, and a purpose of giving more than we are taking. It doesn’t take much as there are so many without. May you be blessed this summer, and as you ride, keep safe and think of how you can give back. Matthew 25:40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” (NLT) “Never Ride Alone” Pastor Johnny Lujan Thunder Road Church

HEAT WAVE VISUAL SUNGLASSES

O

n a recent visit to Xtreme Cycle Motorsports located on Auburn Blvd in Citrus Heights, owner Matt showed TRM NorCal sunglass brand that I had heard about, but never had really looked into them. I thought they were pretty cool so Matt handed me a set of ‘The Cruiser’ Heat Wave shades to check out. Matt explained that they are a Nor Cal company from San Carlos and that the shatterproof lenses were changeable so you could match the lens to the situation or your own style, cool. After I got home I checked out their website (www. heatwavevisual.com) to learn more about them. This is a great product at a very reasonable price and you can not only change up the lenses to all kinds of colors or go with the more traditional black or grey, but you can also completely customize them with interchangeable arms. What a great idea you never get tired of your shades anymore you can just change up the look and keep on truckin’. This company definitely caters to the outdoor lifestyle with all kinds of people wearing them from fighter jet pilots to stunt riders, women or men - they have a great option for you. I sure like mine and I think you will like yours too - so go check them out and if you are in the Citrus Heights area - stop by Xtreme Cycle to get a pair. Special thanks to Matt of Xtreme Cycles and Heat Wave Visual for the great sunglasses! Article and photos by Stan Hill

PIPES: Legal in California

A

s most of you know California does not make things easy when it comes to after-market performance parts for our motorcycles. When TRM NorCal learned that Bassani has a line of exhaust pipes that are legal in California - we were excited to share this with all of you. A few weeks ago, our local DRAG Specialties rep - Sharon and I were talking about Bassani and their great products. This is when I learned that some exhaust pipes were in route to Sierra Steel Harley-Davidson for installation on a brand new 2017 Milwaukee Eight Street Glide. So I jumped on my bike and headed north to Chico to meet up with parts manager - Jaron to get a close look at the new pipes. The chrome on the pipes is beautiful and you can get them in black as well with different tip options. I wish you could actually hear them* from here, but you can’t; but let’s just say that they definitely have a much deeper ‘throat-ier’ tone than the stock pipes that I thought were just about right. *Hear the BEFORE and AFTER installation video* Facebook: Thunder Roads Northern California / Instagram: thunderroadsnorcal Also go to www.bassanipipes.com/emissions.aspx to find the list of all the models and years of bikes that Bassani makes pipes for California. Check it out - your bike is most likely on the list! A big shout out to Bassani for producing pipes that bikers in California can order at locations that carry Drag Specialties products. It just so happened that while I was at Sierra Steel HarleyDavidson, they had a bike night planned so I decided to stick around and had a great time. Check it out if you are around Chico on the 3rd Thursday of the month. Article and photos by Stan Hill

NEW MODEL RELEASE:

INDIAN’S New Chieftain Limited and Elite

D

ebuting on April 4th, Indian Motorcycles (www.IndianMotorcycle.com) newest models went public. TRM NorCal was fortunate to be rolling by C&E Auburn Indian and V-Twin (www.auburnvtwin.com) so I had to go take a close-up look for myself. Thank you Carlo and Emma for the sneak peek!

Needless to say I was impressed with both motorcycles. The biggest design change was the new front fender that gives the bike a bit less of a nostalgic look and more like it belongs to this century. It also comes with an upgraded 19 inch front wheel and looks great on both the bikes. Plus, I heard that you can get the fender and wheel upgrade for Indian Motorcycle that you might already own for a very reasonable price. Head into C&E Auburn Indian and V-Twin or the Indian dealer close to you and check out these beautiful new bikes in person. LIMITED: Blacked out with matching paint on the inner fairing, upgraded speakers and amp, new fender and 19 inch front wheel, mid rise handle bars upgraded leather saddle. ELITE: Beautiful candy red paint job with hand painted graphics (no two bikes will ever have the same graphics), new fender 19 inch front wheel, paint matching inner fairing, upgraded speakers and amp, speakers in the saddle bag lids, upgraded rider and passenger floorboards, Indian cover plates with matching paint, upgraded leather saddle. RIDE PRIDE: BINFORD’S CUSTOM CYCLES SHOHUTR

A

huge thank you to this month’s RIDE PRIDE owner, Steve Romero for jumping on his head-turning ride over to Manteca from San Francisco for our early morning photo shoot at Binford’s Custom Cycles. During our photo shoot, Steve shared that he was one of Binford’s Custom Cycles first customers at the old location down the street (affectionately referred to as the ‘small shop’) which is a few blocks away from their new expansive and beautiful location at 1297 N. Main Street. It is obvious that Steve is a happy returning customer who rolls with a few bikes that have been customized with the award-winning Binford touch. Truth be known and as custom bike builder Paul Binford would nonchalantly say… “it’s what we do”…and we would agree! Steve also told us that he hasn’t had any takers as his license plate would encourage (SHOHUTR) so being resourceful as TRM NorCal can be – we highly suggested that this RIDE PRIDE should take a road trip to the Redwood Run or Virginia City during Street Vibrations for that sort of exposure! Just like everyone else, TRM NorCal appreciates a show bike – but we also like to recognize the bikes that people actually put miles on and ride – we think this one fits the bill perfectly! Binford’s Custom Cycles has it all and can give any model of Harley that one-off look that will be sure to turn heads and stop folks in their tracks anywhere you ride. Swing on by next time you are in the area and check out this Manteca show room that is full of custom eye candy that will surely inspire your imagination for what is possible with your ride. 1st Annual Bikers for Christ Nor Cal Chapter Bike Blessing March 25 (Yankee Hill): 777 Crew held their 1st Annual Bike Blessing at the Rock House off Hwy 70. The weather was sunny and clear riding into Butte County, and you could smell that Rock House chili for miles. Live music with Southern Rock Band Broken Vessel was there to kick up some good ‘ol southern rock. Bikes were prayed over and blessed riders for the up-coming summer. We all left with a little more chrome added to our bikes that day, by way of a 2017 shiny chrome sticker that let us know that “God’s got our back” out on the roads this season. Thanks 777 Crew!

DOUBLE HAMMOCK

ang in there, Baby! Sleep--- when you need it—“you need it!”--- and an uncomfortable rest is never acceptable. This need doesn’t always come at the end of a rider’s day. Often it is either work, recreation or even the events of the previous day that leads to that absolute need to get horizontal. And, the control of the feeling is not always in your hands. This said—life isn’t always close to your bedroom so you will occasionally find yourself in a position to make the best of your current situation. I ride hard, and I do this often for more miles than others will, and I am able to do this by ‘pacing’ myself. Timing is required for hydration, food and an occasional short stop to rest. Lying on the ground beside my motorcycle has often been the Siren’s call over the years. But the ground is not often soft nor comforting as much as one would hope for, and unpacking a ground pad off the motor is never as easy as putting one in place with bungees. However, with a bit of a look-around and two trees (or posts) a lounge in the shade is quickly and easily the best situation to be had.

Motorcycle riders are ever conscience of weight and size in what they pack on their bikes. Rallt Hammocks makes a little 19 ounce very durable hammock that quickly hangs up or repacks packs into its own 5” x 7” stuff bag. In both size and weight this hammock fits the need for motorcycle riders. The triple chain-stitched seems on this quality 70-D Rip Stop fabric hanging ‘rest stop’ is tag ended by 20-feet of marine grade rope for attachment. 2 aluminum wire-gate “no-snag” carabiners for quick set up are included. Rallt’s 3/4-inch polyester tubular accessory hanging straps give you an additional 10 feet each of working length and stop the “oh- you’ll hurt the tree bark” greenies from bothering you while you rest. They come in bag at 1.5” x 4” x 4”. … easily tucked into any pocket. I was recently posted out the “Double” Rallt Hammock to field test and let readers know of my findings. As I have used numerous brands and types of hammocks for my personal use over more years than I wish to admit… I was eager to once again be able to “lay down on the job”. Rallt’s double hammock measures 10-foot x 6-foot 2-inches, with a carrying capacity of 500 pounds. This was very comfortable for my large frame and would be acceptable for two people if you are

a “narrower” couple. Having passed those days of size and a desire to be wrapped in a cocoon with my wife, I would suggest a single each… or a double if you like to ‘spread out’. With a list price of $49.00 for the double it is an easy and economical choice to opt into buying two…and the good news is that I’ve found numerous outlets that market this hammock for $39.99 or less. These hammocks are available in 9 color choices to suit your own style. So, having given you the facts and figures: I’ll allow you my observations here-

This hammock is a traditional ‘open face’ design with no bug screen or rain fly. That said; when I ride I always carry a small face net because I often run into the problem of dealing with mosquitoes and bugs in my face while setting up a camp for the night. Although I did not find the need to have bug protection while field testing the hammock this time of year; prepared is always a good way to roll. Yet, being built as wide and thick as a Mountain Gorilla, while laying in this double size Rallt hammock—there was enough side fabric to fold completely over top of me for protection from a cool breeze and would dissuade any but the most determined of bug invaders. With this extra side fabric ‘welling me in’ I felt extremely secure and falling out was never a concern. And- with my 275 pounds, the Rallt took my stress without so much as a groan…perfect. The hammock set up very easily the first time I pulled it from the bag and it was up and secure with the tree straps in one minute and 20 seconds…and I wasn’t trying to hurry. The tree straps are double bar-tack-sewn at segmented points so you can attach the carabiners in any spot for a quick and appropriate fit. My overall assessment on quality, durability, usefulness and price value are excellent on the Rallt Double Hammock. I liked that its own stuff bag was sewn to an outside edge so it wouldn’t be blown away and lost in a breeze. I already have this hammock staged up with my riding gear and I’ll have it attached on top of my motorcycle for ready use during my springtime rides and the 1700 mile run to The Buffalo Chip in Sturgis later in July. BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT: NEW EARTH CREATIONS JEWELRY

Upon learning the background of how New Earth Creations Jewelry came to be – somehow it reminded me of the classic 70’s commercial for Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups. Remember the two dudes strutting down the street – one eating a chocolate bar and the another eating peanut butter out of a jar? They eventually physically collide into each at the corner proclaiming “you got peanut butter ON my chocolate bar” and the other dude says “you got chocolate IN my peanut butter!” Only to take a bite of the unexpected combination of deliciousness to come up with the ingredients for peanut butter cups! Back in the late 70’s, you could often find the craftsmanship of Hog Heaven’s Mike Tenario on most of the leather vests in Northern California. In fact back in the day, Hog Heaven was the ‘go to’ vendor for the original bolt-on ride pins. Meanwhile (around the corner), Wayne Miller was retired from construction yet kept himself busy creating gold jewelry with his company Gold Ventures, but when the gold market dipped – the shop closed. One thing lead to another and the two long-time friends began collaborating on some silver and gold jewelry pieces together and next thing you know -

New Earth Creations Jewelry was formed. Last year’s Redwood Run was their first vendor show and business continues to grow! TRM NorCal was recently invited to attend the first New Earth Creations Jewelry Open House. Mike and Wayne gave us a tour of their shop operations to see each stage that a piece of their jewelry

will take. We also had the privilege to watch an actual demonstration of the New Earth Creation’s process using a technique called lost wax casting using manganese bronze and sterling silver. Lost wax casting is an ancient jewelry making method that dates back to 3500 BC. That’s right…Before Christ! It was a pretty impressive operation. Individual rubber moulds are designed and created by Mike to use and reuse again to create an extensive inventory of unique jewelry creations ranging from hearts with wings, dangling moons and event pins. New Earth Creations Jewelry’s reputation is growing into a soughtafter vendor at various local motorcycle events. The quality of their craftsmanship stands out above the same ol’ same ol’ vendors you’ll find at a bike event. As their business continues to grow, Mike and Wayne recently took “T” under their wings to learn the ropes – she is an asset to the team bringing her own artistic eye to the table. Mike’s son and daughter-in-law, Ernie and Jenn are also a part of the team along with Lori, Wayne’s wife – all of whom pitch in at events with sales and taking custom-made orders. And the next time you are at a Fryed Brother’s Show….take a closer look at Harry Fryed’s belt buckle. It was Mike that designed and crafted them for Harry and Tommy Fryed. And if you like to bling up your motorcycle - New Earth Creations Jewelry has recently created a new line of bike jewelry…that’s right, custom-made jewelry for your ride! A special thank you to Mike and Wayne for giving us the opportunity to see firsthand the process of your talented craftsmanship. And thank you to Wolf and “T” for leading the way on a beautiful day ride in the gold country. The shop is not open to the public – however you can call to make an appointment. Tech Tips THE GREAT OIL DEBATE- PART I

Few things generate more debate in the automotive/ motorcycle world than the subject of oil. In this series, we’ll clear up some of the bad information floating around, break down oil in technical terms, and talk about maintenance. Many moons ago, the quality of off-the-shelf oils varied greatly. Anything from real cheap non-detergent oil to the more expensive synthetics and everything in between made selection a little more complicated. These days, there’s no shortage of choices, but most name brand oils are of excellent quality. As long as you are using the right oil for the application, you’ll be in good shape. Let’s start by clarifying some of the “facts” and rumors. First, there’s the synthetic vs. fossil oil argument. Here’s my take. Synthetic is superior, hands down. It’s also twice the cost, give or take. So is it worth the extra cost for the better oil? I tell folks that if they follow their recommended factory drain intervals, and ride in mostly average riding conditions (mainly speaking to extreme temperatures), a good fossil oil will do just fine. Have a tendency to overshoot that 5,000 mile service? Live in Phoenix? Wrestling with heat management issues? Try switching to a synthetic. In most cases, synthetic will drop your oil temps 10-15 degrees. If you’re not on a real tight budget and just want to run the top of

the line stuff, that’s OK too. There are many to choose from. Some of most well known in the V-Twin world are AMSOIL, Mobile-1, and Harley’s SYN3 to name a few. Further, HD’s water cooled (Twin Cooled) engines have curtailed much of the heat management problems, yet The Motor Company still recommends synthetic. Not so much a conspiracy to make money, most likely just a smart business decision to go with the best oil for the vehicles they’re selling. This is a good merge into some of the industry’s best hum dingers. Synthetic IS NOT TOO SLIPPERY! Your bearings WILL NOT SKID. This was a favorite back before Harley started selling………synthetic oil. Slippery oil is good. It’s what oil does. Nuff said! My other favorite is “once you start running synthetic, you can’t go back.” I don’t know what chemistry major came up with that one, but here’s the deal. You can go back and forth all day long. Not only that, there is no analysis that we have seen that indicates the two can’t be mixed. Synthetic oil is designed to chemically duplicate fossil oil. Would I recommend mixing fossil with synthetic? Not as a routine, just because there’s no reason to. In a pinch, however, it’s not going to hurt your bike to run what’s available to get you off the side of the road and back home. If you have this real mechanical itch to do some service wear experimentation and want to try running synthetic on your next oil change, do it. Out with the old, in with the new. In conclusion, today’s modern oils are excellent. If you’re brand loyal, run with it. Shopping for the best price, go for it! Get the right oil for the application and you’ll do just fine. Next month we’ll dive into that (applications) and explain some of the other technical aspects (viscosity, additive packages, etc.). Ride safe! A

s a kid, I watched my father build his 1956 Panhead up from a basket case, often helping him work on his bike - that is until he lost his patience with me and sent me and my sisters in the house. I took my first ride on his 1955 Harley Hummer when I was 14 years old, consequently getting in massive trouble as I took it out on a joy ride down a busy road. Dad had to get in his truck and come find me. I would often ride with my Dad, but never on my own…. until recently. I always wanted to ride my own but with family and children it was a distant goal of mine. My boyfriend motivated me to get my motorcycle license as we both thought it would be good to at least know how to operate the bike. Upon completing the course, I became enthused to own and ride my own HarleyDavidson. My boyfriend searched up and down for a suitable bike, we decided that a Dyna would be the best overall bike to start my riding experience. In February of 2016, we purchased a 2002 Dyna FXD. Within months I felt as if this bike was just not fast or cool enough. With the help of my boyfriend, we upgraded the bikes mechanical parts as well as adding a fairing; powder coating much of the parts, installed t-bars for a better ride. Turning into a Harley Dyna FXDXT. In May of 2016, my father rode out from Wyoming on his Dyna and during the Forever Freedom Ride I was able to ride side by side with my father. It was without a doubt one of the proudest moments my father had in his life being able to ride alongside with his daughter on her own bike. He has since been back on many occasions to visit family and ride with me. In October of 2016 not wanting to have the typical “girly bike” we completely dismantled the bike for powder coating. We installed a new Harley Davidson FXDXT front end with dual discs, upgraded the cam plate and installed Feuling cams along with a high performance oil pump for more power, Pirelli night dragon tires, BMC custom seat, Leather pro bags, JD customs Fairing, FXDXT rear shocks, new air intake. She now rides like a bat out of hell and looks like a mean machine. Now I ride down the freeway in style while rocking out to Slayer and Megadeth to name a few. So until I see you out there, ride safe and enjoy the ride. Photos contributed by James Novaes

Scrappy, a local beachgoer, couldn’t even get a second look from any of the girls on the beach. So he headed over to Razor, at the lifeguard tower, to see if he had any advice for him. “Dude, it’s obvious,” said Razor. “You’re wearing those gnarly old swimming trunks that make you look like an old geezer. They’re majorly outta’ style. Your best bet is to get yourself a Speedo—say, two sizes too small—and drop a potato inside it. You’ll have all the babes you can handle, dude.” The following weekend, Scrappy hits the beach with his brandspanking-new tight-ass neon green Speedo and his potato, and it’s not long before he approaches Razor at the lifeguard tower once more. “For cryin’ out loud,” yells Scrappy, “it’s worse than before! Everyone on the beach acts disgusted as I walk by—covering their faces, turning away, laughing! What’s wrong now?” “Jeez, Scrap!” shrieks Razor, “The potato goes in front, dude!” _______________________________________________ A body builder takes off his shirt & a blonde says “Wow what a great chest you have!” he says “100 lbs of dynamite Babe!” He takes off his pants & the blonde says “What massive calves you have!” He replies “That’s 100 lbs of dynamite babe!” He then removes his underwear & the blonde goes running screaming in fear. He puts his clothes on & chases behind her. He catches her & ask why she ran like that. The blonde replies “I was afraid to be around all that dynamite after i saw how short the fuse was!” _______________________________________________ A Doctor was performing rounds at the hospital one morning and while checking up on a patient named Bubba, he asked ... ‘So how’s your breakfast this morning, Bubba?’ ‘It’s pretty good except for the Kentucky Jelly. I aint never had no jelly like that and I’m born and raised in Kentucky. The Doctor asked to see the jelly and Bubba produced a foil packet labeled ‘KY Jelly.’ _______________________________________________

The doctor arrived, and examined the baby, checked his weight, and being a little concerned, asked if the baby was breast-fed or bottle-fed. ‘Breast-fed,’ she replied. ‘Well, strip down to your waist,’ the doctor ordered. She did he pinched her nipples, pressed, kneaded, and rubbed both breasts for a while in a very professional and detailed examination. Motioning to her to get dressed, the doctor said, ‘No wonder this baby is underweight. You don’t have any milk.’ I know,’ she said, ‘I’m his Grandma, but I’m sure glad I came...... literally.” _______________________________________________ A little old lady was walking down the street dragging two large plastic garbage bags behind her. One of the bags was ripped and every once in a while a $20 bill fell out onto the sidewalk. Noticing this, a policeman stopped her, and said, “Ma’am, there are $20 bills falling out of that bag.” “Oh, really? Darn it!” said the little old lady. “I’d better go back and see if I can find them. Thanks for telling me, Officer.” “Well, now, not so fast,” said the cop. “Where did you get all that money? You didn’t steal it, did you?” winking at the little old darlin’. “Oh, no, no”, said the old lady. “You see, my back yard is right next to a golf course. A lot of golfers come and pee through a knot hole in my fence, right into my flower garden. It used to really tick me off. Kills the flowers you know. Then I thought, ‘why not make the best of it?’ So, now, I stand behind the fence by the knot hole, real quiet, with my hedge clippers. Every time some guy sticks his “thing” through my fence, I surprise him, grab hold of it and say, ‘OK., buddy! Give me $20 or off it comes!’ “Well, that seems only fair,” said the cop, laughing. “OK. Good luck! Oh, by the way, what’s in the other bag?” “Well now, not everybody pays.”

Thibodeau and Boudreau were hunting when Boudreau grabs his chest and falls to the ground, Thibodeau whips out his cell phone, calls 911 and tells the operator, “I think Boudreau is dead! What should I do?” The operator, in a calm soothing voice says, “Just take it easy and follow my instructions. First, let’s make sure he’s dead.” There is a silence -- then a shot is heard. Thibodeau’s voice comes back on the line, “Okay, gotcha’, now what?” _______________________________________________ A woman and a baby were in the doctor’s examining room, waiting for the doctor to come in for the baby’s first exam.
