HIS HAS BEEN one of the mildest winters that

we can remember, and although it is not good for NorCal’s water situation - it has made for some great riding. We hope that you have all been able to get out and take advantage of this opportunity hit the road without having to bring your rain gear along just in case. Having said that we still have a ways to go before spring makes its presence felt again, but this has been a winter for the riding record books. Now that we are past February, the event schedule will start to pick up. It is always an exciting time of the year. Riders that have been locked down or had their bikes tore down for their annual maintenance; repairs and upgrades will be hitting the road and catching up with friends they may not have seen for a few months at their favorite events. Remember…You can keep up with what is going on out there by looking in the back of each issue for upcoming events in Northern California! You can also check online at our website for more updated information by going to thunderroadsnorcal.com and check out the upcoming events there as well. This is also where to SUBMIT any upcoming events into the magazine! Speaking of events, we have tried for years to get as much event coverage as we could in the magazine but we know we are only able to scratch the surface of what is out there. This year we are opening up to event promotors too, if you have someone taking photos for your event – please EMAIL us at thunderroadsnorcal@ yahoo.com and we will provide you with our Dropbox link to submit photos of your event. Photographers will be given photo credit in the magazine to help promote their contribution. We cannot promise that your event will get published, but we will try hard to work with the space we have to get as many in as possible. A special camera is not required as smartphones these days are plenty good for this type of candid photography. So give it a try! We are looking for new and exciting events to share with our readers and maybe help to grow your event attendance in the future by gaining exposure here. RIDE FREE RIDE OFTEN

ow! Look at that, March is already here and we will be ending the first quarter of the year. Are your goals still intact? Are you pursuing everything you dreamed about for 2018? If you have slacked off a bit, never fear, all you have to do is start again. Pick up the weights, put on your walkin’ shoes, put down the soda, and restart the program. If you had ideas for a better you, don’t let society drag you down and quit. The good works you planned to accomplish, can still be accomplished with just a little bit of courage. As I like to say, “There can be no courage without fear.” We all have fears, but I am a living testimony that we all possess enough courage to accomplish anything we set out to do. Yes - it may take a little longer. Yes - it may cause some initial pain. And yes - it is going to take a whole lot of faith. But you can be sure, that if you sustain the courage to change the things you can, things will change. And someday, you will wake up a different person in a different world, guaranteed! One of the scariest things I ever did was to launch a church with no resources, no backing, and no group support. But when God stirred in my heart that there were people who needed a place to come; where people looked like them, talked like them, rode motorcycles like them; and yes, even smelled like them. I was determined to find the courage to change the things I could and jump out of the boat! We launched Thunder Road Church in June 2011. Yes, it was scary. Yes, I got called crazy. And yes, I was told multiple times it would never work and we would never get any support. But I had the faith to carry on, not listening to the naysayers, and gather others whose like-mindedness encouraged me to continue. And BAM, seven years later we are going strong. We have helped so many people that I have lost count. We

have seen miracle after miracle come to fruition. We are ready to launch Thunder Road Biker Church #2. That’s right! Thunder Road Church is growing and we are gearing up to reach and help even more people in 2018. Mark your calendars for Sunday, March 11, 2018 from 5:30pm to 6:30pm for the launch of Thunder Road Church Roseville. We will be meeting at 706 Atlantic Street in Roseville. Next door to the Lord’s Gym in the chapel closest to the street – you will see the bikes. We are still working the details out, but the date is set, and we have faith that it will be a blessing to the motorcycle community throughout the region. As we continue to grow, we never forget our purpose or the mission of Thunder Road Biker Church - to reach bikers and those of the biker community with encouragement and hope. To have an open door for all who want to come and find rest, peace, and comfort. With respect for the person and an understanding of their past, we only share our experience strength and hope as we have been down a similar road. ALL ARE WELCOME AT THUNDER ROAD CHURCH! Philippians 1:12 And I want you to know, my dear brothers and sisters, that everything that has happened to me here, has helped to spread the good news. “Never Ride Alone” Pastor Johnny Lujan – Thunder Road Church (916) 521-5706 / Johnny@thunderroadchurch.com / www.thunderroadchurch.com Rancho Cordova – Every Thursday Night 7-8pm/ 3235 Sunrise Blvd #3 NEW LOCATION: Roseville – 2nd Sunday of the month 5:30-6:30 / 706 Atlantic Street

inter is still hanging around here in NorCal. Actually, since Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow, we were to have six more weeks of winter. Phil’s cousin, Jimmy in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, couldn’t stand the thought of six more weeks, lost it and tried to have the mayor’s ear for brunch. Just think of the comedic twists the writers of ‘Groundhog Day’ could have come up with if they had included that scenario. Phil is on death row for the attack, Bill Murray breaks him out and they gallivant around before going off the cliff at the mine pit. Just thinking. Anyway, on one real nice morning, I rolled onto I80 thinking I’d go up into gold country for the day. Getting off on the Golden Chain Hwy (SR49), I headed North up to Katrina’s for breakfast. Great place! Get there early on the weekends, though. Back in the saddle, I continued North to Combie Rd, where I turned east and took the longer, twistier route to Grass Valley via Dog Bar Rd. Once in Grass Valley, I hung a right on

E. Empire St and rode up to the Empire Mine State Park - the largest and richest ‘hard rock’ gold mine in California. Back in its heyday, rock crushing stampers were fed 24 hours a day. Once crushed to dust, mercury (quicksilver) amalgam was used to separate the gold from the waste. There were 367 miles of shafts reaching 8000 ft deep. Incredible! I really enjoyed seeing the old buildings and equipment and tried to imagine what it must have been like to work here. Lots and lots to see. Tours start in May. I’ve put the Miner’s Picnic event on our calendar - should be fun! My next stop was Camptonville - an old stagecoach stop between Marysville and Downieville. I like this section of 49 from Nevada City, so I thought I would include a stop at Burgee Dave’s. Great food and spirits and the home of the Ultimate Bloody Mary! You won’t find friendlier proprietors than Brian and Sandi! Sadly last year, they had a major fire that destroyed a majority of the building – however they are still open for business even among the

ashes. Every little bit helps – so take a ride out to their establishment to show your support or go to their ‘Go Fund Me’ page Burgee Dave’s Fire Restoration to lend a helping hand to this biker friendly business! So now it was time to hit the road again. Backtracking down 49, I turned east on Tyler Foote Rd and made for the Malakoff Diggins State Park. You’ll experience some nice sweepers until reaching Cruzon Grade Rd and there things tighten up through the forest. Follow the signs and you will end up in North Bloomfield, site of the Diggins. Here was the largest ‘hydraulic’ mine operation in California. High pressure water cannons (monitors), fed from dams were used to excavate whole hillsides in search of the gold nuggets. 50,000 tons of gravel were moved everyday and ran through various filters. Wow! All this water, with the waste and tails, were directed into the Yuba River. Way downstream, along with other damage, farmers were eventually being flooded out. The I Street Bridge in Sacramento had to be raised because of the rising river. Suits were filed and in 1884 hydraulic

mining was banned. You can still see evidence of this northeast of Marysville/Yuba City along both sides of the river. It’s called the Yuba Goldfields. Looking like intestines from the air, you’ll find irregular hills of debris alongside clear blue water ponds – the results of dredging the river trying to mitigate the damage. I went out the way I came in and once again back on 49, I motored south to my final destination of the day, the Washington Hotel. It’s a real nice tree-lined ride traveling east on Hwy 20 toward Washington Rd, where I made a left and rode the sometimes tight curves down to the hotel. The asphalt can be wet in cool weather, so take caution. The hotel is located on the South Yuba River and here you found another type of mining, the individual gold panners. Most of the miners never struck it rich, but there were those that managed their holdings well or sold their claims and became prosperous. There was enough success here that it led to the founding of Washington. The hotel has burned down and been rebuilt a couple of times since 1857. Now it’s a nice place to hang out with a deck overlooking the river, a good restaurant and saloon. You can stay in one of the dozen or so rooms. Wyatt and Josephine Earp and Grover Cleveland are some of the notables that have stayed here. Well, it was time to mosey on home, so I made my way back to Grass Valley, this time electing to take SR174 down to Colfax. Since it was such a nice day and I thought I deserved it, I pulled over at the Red Frog and kicked it out on their back deck for a bit. Now nice and relaxed, it was time to hit the Interstate. At this point, I had a little ‘gold fever’, but all I could think to do was plug in ‘Fire On the Mountain’, put it in gear and let her go! Article and photos contributed by Chuck Loseth

he weather is warming up for some and the bikes are coming out of storage or the garage. This month we are going to talk about carbureted motorcycles. A problem that we see every year when the weather warms up is that the customer cannot get the bike started. A good practice before storing your bike is to drain the gas tank and run the carburetor out of gas. Doing this will prevent the gas from going bad and creating a sticky varnish like state in the bowl of the carb and clogging the jets solid. If you have followed the steps above, pour new gas into tank. Insure that battery is fully charged. Pull the choke and roll the throttle a few times and start the bike up. Let the bike warm up and then push the choke in and you are on your way. If the measures listed above have not been followed you are going to want to find a proper container to put the old gas in. Disconnect fuel line from carburetor and drain. (You will want to turn petcock on. If it is a vacuum operated petcock you will need to siphon gas out.) Remove the air cleaner assembly and unscrew the 4 screws that hold the bowl of carburetor on. (Insure you have safety glasses on and have something to catch the fuel in bowl.)

Remove both the pilot jet and the main jet. On each jet there will be numbers. Those are the sizes. It is recommended that you just replace the jets. Once completed clean the bowl out and clear it of any debris or varnish with carb cleaner. After everything is cleaned, it is time to put it all back together and connect the fuel lines. Put new gas in and follow the steps above. Article contributed by Jake and Steve. Photo credits to S&S and Harley-Davidson

THE RAZ REPORT:

27th Annual Vintage & Antique Motorcycle Auction January 23-27 (Las Vegas, Nevada): The first Las Vegas motorcycle auction was held 27 years ago with only 177 motorcycles all from U.S. sellers. I attended the 17th Annual Mid-America Antique Motorcycle Auction in January 2008 as a spectator, and what a great SHOW it was! In fact, I was so impressed that I returned the following year as a bidder; however, I did not bring a motorcycle home. The motorcycles I was interested in buying, a 1965 Bonneville T120R, were selling for 12 to 15 thousand dollars…MORE than I was willing to pay, but, the auction was a great SHOW again. Fast forward to 2013: Mecum Auctions bought Mid-America Auctions. Fast forward to 2017: register with Mecum Auctions to attend the 2018 event and studied the photographs and descriptions of the consignments on Mecum’s website (mecum.com).

Bonham auction in the Amazon Ballroom at the Rio All Suite Hotel and Casino

Lot F69 1961 Victoria Model 115

The 28th Annual Vintage and Antique Motorcycle Auction, the WORLD’s largest vintage motorcycle auction is located at South Point Hotel and Casino (SouthPointCasino.com) a great venue where it all happens. On Tuesday morning we signed in at the auction registration and got our reserved seats (FRONT ROW!). I spent most of Tuesday previewing and photographing the motorcycles and talking to other attendees - some were not so happy with the auction since Mecum took over as there was “a lot of junk now” (basket cases, wrecks, Japanese motorcycles). However, the Mecum auctioneers made a valid point “there is something here for everyone regardless of how much you have to spend.” Bonhams (Bonhams.com/Vegas) was also having an auction open to the public at the Rio All Suite Hotel and Casino with a viewing on Wednesday and bidding on Thursday. So on Wednesday morning, we jet over to the Rio - no “junk” here - everything here was better than concourse. And I suspect bidders would have to have deep, deep, deeeeep pockets! Nevertheless, a really nice “show”. Then we headed back to South Point.

Lot F277 1966 Pannonia T250 with Sidecar

The 2007 and 2008 auctions were Thursday, Friday, Saturday events and Sharon found them boring and spent time gambling. However, Mecum’s event was not boring at all, rather, it was interesting and entertaining. For example, in the middle of bidding on a motorcycle there was a long downtime as staff worked on a communication problem with the phones (bids also come in over phone lines and over the

internet) and the auctioneer says “sooooo, this bear goes into a bar and tells the barkeep he wants a gin... ... ... ... ... ... and tonic, and the barkeep asks the bear ‘why the big pause?’ and the bear replies ‘I got them from my dad.’”

$3,000,000 reserve.

A 3 cylinder Suzuki with shiny blue and white paint and very shiny chrome exhaust pipes was up for auction and this kid about 8 to 10 years old walks right up to the stage and is checking the bike out... the auctioneer leans over the podium and says “Hey kid! Do you like that bike?” Kid nods yes... Auctioneer says “tell your dad.” Later when the bidding slows and the kid is up with his dad, the auctioneer says “Hey Kid!... you might want to throw a fit or something.”

There was a panel discussion after the Tuesday auction. One topic was tax consequences of collector motorcycles and why it was better to let your kid inherit a collector motorcycle rather than give it to him while you’re still sucking air and have him be liable for capital gains later when he sells it. Another topic was about the influx of Japanese motorcycles in the set of collector motorcycles because a lot of the people bidding now had them when they were young and still have an affinity for them, an affinity for them indeed - many Hondas and even some 2-stroke Japanese bikes were selling for as much as 30 thousand dollars, surprisingly to me, about twice what the Trumpets were selling for!

How about a little auction verbiage on a slow sell: “Lot S3.1 is a 1991 Harley-Davidson XL883 Road Racer asking 5 thousand 5 5 5 THOUSAND 1 bid 2 2 2 THOUSAND ... how many of you have never been to a live Mecum Auction? - raise your hand - have 2 3 4 30 thousand ... it just never gets old ... 1 thousand bid NOW 2 NOW 2 NOW 2 NOW 3 NOW 3 NOW 3 ... LAST AND FINAL CALL, ANYBODY ELSE?... [BANG] SOLD 2 THOUSAND” Well, there were a lot of 60’s and 70’s Trumpets that were “sprinkled” throughout the lots, and, many other motorcycles I find interesting, Harley, Indian, Vincent, Ducati, BMW, Buell, Velocette, Matchless, BSA, Royal Enfield, Ariel, Moto Guzzi, Norton, Excelsior Henderson, Pope, Thor, and some I am not interested in Bultaco, Penton, Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki, Yamaha, and many types of motorcycles, basket case, wrecked (“with significant damage”), not restored with “nice patina,” restored and better than concourse, board track, dirt track, sport bikes, cruisers, full dressers, trikes and side hacks. Bikes from shows (the 1946 knuck from Sons of Anarchy, a replica “Captain America” from Easy Rider, the wrecked police bike from Terminator 3), and famous people like Steve McQueen, and from famous racers. Perhaps there has been an upswing in the economy since last year’s auction, but, the bikes I was most interested in were mostly in the 12 to 15 thousand range in 2008 (more than I wanted to pay), and now, mostly in the 12 to 15 thousand range (still more than I want to pay), which doesn’t seem to me to be a great investment, so still more than I want to pay, although there was one that sold for $2,500, black with flames, a lot of Harleys and Indians sold for as much as $50,000 to $100,000, to $150,000 and highest bid at the auction was $1,900,000 for the Henderson brand but did not reach the

More auction verbiage during a slow sell: “... how many of you have a bidder number and have not bought a bike yet? raise your hand - 3 thousand ... it just never gets old...”

Some more auction verbiage with 5 people bidding: “Lot S143 is a 1949 Harley-Davidson FL Panhead – let’s start at 10 thousand - 10 thousand - do I have 10 thousand? - how about 5 thousand? - 5 thousand - 3 thousand? - 2 thousand? - 1 thousand? - 2 - now 3 - now 4 - now 5 - now 10 - 11 - 12 - 13 - 14 - 15 - 15 5 - 16 - 16 5 - 17 - 17 5 - 18 - 18 5 - 18 7 50 - HANDS IN THE AIR! - bid is 18 7 50 - 19 19 19 19 2 50 - asking 19 2 50 – LET’S GO! LET’S GO! LET’S GO! - 19 2 50 bid 19 5 19 5 19 5 GOTTA GO! GOTTA GO! GOTTA GO! - bid is 19 5 19 5 19 5 asking 20 20 thousand TWENTY TWENTY TWENTY... (looking at a bidder) YOU’RE OUT (looking at another bidder) YOU’RE OUT (looking at another bidder) YOU’RE OUT (looking at another bidder) YOU’RE ALL OUT (looking at high bidder) MECUM RULE - you bid 19 5 - the reserve is on and no one else is willing to bid - the reserve is 20 thousand - if you will raise your bid to 20 thousand then I will bang the gavel, close the bidding and you win the bid, will you raise your bid? [affirmative sign-BANG!] SOLD TWENTY THOUSAND.” Auction results are on Mecum’s website. The next Mecum motorcycle auction in Las Vegas is June 1st and 2nd (only expected to have 600 consignments), or just wait for the big one next January! The era is gone forever, fortunately the motorcycles remain. Article and photos contributed by Russell “Raz” Holder / KNUCKLEHEADS FOREVER!

MY TWO CENTS: I

SLICK AS SNOT!

MIGHT jinx myself by saying this but here goes! It looks like the freezing weather has come and gone. I know better, but it looks like the rain is even done for the year! It’s been a couple of weeks since I’ve seen frost on roofs and lawns in the morning when I ride to work. I guess you can say I’m gonna miss that cold brisk morning ride. One thing I won’t miss is pulling frames in the shop when it’s colder inside than outside, inside the shop it could drop to 25 degrees. Another thing I won’t miss is the wet and slick streets. Like I said, I won’t miss them but I ain’t complaining! I really enjoy riding on twisty roads, but once in a while I’ll come across something and then BOOM! All of a sudden I hit some shit that’s slicker as snot, it scared me half to death. There’s no telling what it could be. The wet roads can sometimes hide little hazards that can easily become big problems if you’re not paying attention. I don’t know what it was, but one night on my way home from the shop I hit something in a turn that made my front wheel slide out just a little, like a little skip, and I thought for sure I was going down. It jolted my whole body and it felt like I pulled a muscle in my butt cheek. Go ahead and laugh, but a lesser man would have colored his shorts. I heard what sounded like a piece of metal bouncing when this happened. I think it was a small piece of re-bar or something round like that, I don’t know but I wasn’t about to turn around and look for it. Another thing I won’t miss about riding on wet

streets is when you pull up to a stop light and put your foot down on something slippery, like oil or tranny fluid and you do everything you can just short of pulling a hamstring trying not to drop your bike. Again! I ain’t complaining! In fact I can laugh about it, now that my butt cheek muscle and hamstring are healed up. I know I’m not the only one this has happened to either. I know we need the rain but I’m really enjoying the dry roads, and I know the rain is not gone yet, we still have March, April, and May and sometimes in the beginning of June it might rain a little. If you’ve been riding long enough then you’ll know at one time or another there’s been a little rain at the Redwood Run and that’s usually the last rain of the season, if it rains at all. I’m just saying… Watch out on wet roads, they will come back, and when they do, just be a little more cautious. But if you’re afraid to ride in the rain or on wet streets just stay home and play Twister or whatever fair weather riders do. That’s my 2 cents, now go ride like hell and have some fun! 38th Annual Sweetheart Run February 11 (Auburn): We woke up to a cool cloudy and blustery day, but nothing that would stop the fun that was about to go down. Riders were gathering in Auburn at C&E Auburn Indian and V-Twin and from the looks of the turnout, not too many were deterred by the cooler temps. A sizable group of riders were led out by the owners of C&E Auburn Indian and V-Twin - Carlo and Emma on a route that takes the riders across the Foresthill bridge before dropping into the canyon and crossing the North Fork of the American River to make the twisty ride back up to the town of Cool where some riders opted to make an unofficial stop at Milestone Saloon. Then it was a left turn onto 193 to head to Georgetown, where most riders hung out for a while at the newly renovated Georgetown Hotel. Outside on the patio, a Face Down was performing by the huge circular fire pit while some rider’s grabbed a bite to eat and a beverage before heading down to the final stop at the Coloma

Club. The roads in this part of NorCal make for some spectacular riding and all the riders seem to be having a great time as they twisted their way through the Sierra foothills. Once at the Coloma Club, there was a nice lunch waiting for the riders as well as the Buzztones playing everyone’s favorite tunes on the back deck.

We all had a good time mingling and grabbing a beer from the outside bar that was busy - busy! Then it was raffle time with Tanya from Colfax winning the 50/50 taking home a whopping $369…well, minus what might have remained after she generously offered to buy her crew some celebratory beverages! Thank you to C&E Auburn Indian and V-Twin and all of their hardworking staff and volunteers for doing a wonderful job of putting this 38th annual event on as a fundraiser for the Toys for Troops Kids. It was the perfect way to spend the day with your sweetheart. Article and photos by Stan and Terri Hill Check out ‘Vlog #11 – Sweetheart Run’ video on at

Who is the Typical Motorcycle Hero?

HERO: Noun- a person, typically a man, who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities. (Webster dictionary) A typical motorcycle hero is not always a dare devil or an actor that has starred in some motorcycle movie like Steve McQueen, Marlon Brando, Peter Fonda or even Evel Knievel. It can just be a friend that you admire - like your good old riding buddy that is always up for a ride at a last minutes notice. Always ready to ride to motorcycle events, toy runs, overnight trips or just a day run. Always looking out for you, even when you had too much to drink or rescuing you and your motorcycle up when your broken down motorcycle did not feel like going for a ride that today. I have been fortunate enough to know such a typical motorcycle hero. A good old riding buddy who I have been riding with for over 20 years now. It’s not the years and experiences on a motorcycle that makes him a typical motorcycle hero. He has been riding motorcycles longer than I have been alive and I am now fast approaching 56 years of age! He is now approaching 80 years of young age and he could not imagine a day going by without thinking about or riding one of his 3 cruiser motorcycles he owns still today. So say “Hello” to a local typical motorcycle hero, Eddie “Stumpy” Summers when you see him around the Loomis area. It’s the “Stumpy” that probably makes him a real typical motorcycle hero in my book because he lost his left foot in a horrible motorcycle accident in the mid 80’s. And that injury was the least of all his injuries that just about ended all his riding days here on earth. But even that would not ward off his addiction for riding motorcycles with

friends. Since his accident, each motorcycle that he has owned has had the left shifter modified for him to ride. Even when just recently I broke my left foot dirt riding I borrowed a modified shifter from him to put on my cruiser and rode with cast on to keep riding with him. Ed, “the old fart” as I call him, definitely lives by the saying, “You don’t quit riding motorcycles because you are getting old, you get old because you quit riding.” Ed, of course, is retired for some time now and I am still waiting for my retirement riding days like him. Ed rides 3-4 days during the work week, but he is not riding to commute to work like most of us. I hear of his nice day rides and meeting new friends while I was working that day. I then ask him if he knows “what FU or SU means?” I can only use my imagination about riding during the day while sitting behind a ‘life energy sucking’ computer at work. But when the weekend comes up for me, Ed is always up for another day ride. Say “Hello” to the “Old Fart”, Eddie “Stumpy” Summers when you see him riding around the Loomis area. We will be having his official 80th birthday at the Valencia Club (Penryn) in March. And when the time comes for him to ride in heaven, he instructed me to take his last motorcycle to the VC, unlock the gas cap on it and pour his ashes into it and throw away the key - that way he will always there when his riding buddies/friends stop by! Please don’t let on that you know about his missing left foot, he’ll kill me for mentioning it and I’m not joking! He does not want anyone’s pity or to be treated differently. He just wants to ride with good old buddies Article and photos contributed by Adam Mayer

RIDE PRIDE:

INDIAN ROADMASTER GETS A PERSONAL TOUCH

Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 22

We first met Larry Shields at a local brewery where we had both stopped in for lunch. We were both very interested in the new Indian Motorcycle line-up and ended up buying our bikes right around the same time at C&E Auburn Indian and V-Twin. Since then our motorcycles and how much we loved them became a topic of discussion each time our paths would cross. Unfortunately several months back, Larry had an incident on the road that caused him to lay his bike down (thanks to California neglecting its road maintenance, but that is another story). Larry was fortunate to walk away with a couple of painful broken ribs and a banged up motorcycle. But that is why we have insurance and he knew right where to go to get his ride back up and running. So back to C&E Auburn Indian and V-Twin his bike went. While the bike was tore down and all the replacement parts were in, the folks at C&E knew right where to go to get the color matched up perfectly with the stock paint. Proctor’s Auto Body and Paint in Newcastle has a great reputation as a very good painter that can match factory colors of bikes and cars as good as or better than anybody. But Larry had a custom paint scheme in mind that he had wanted so now was the perfect time to make that happen. So after Jim Proctor had finished the basic paint job - it was off to Sunny the Artist to make Larry’s vision come true. Sunny did an outstanding job airbrushing the intricate spiritual design onto the bike. The end result was a subtle but yet a powerful visual. When Sunny was done - it was back to C&E to get all the parts back on the bike and just like that Larry was back on the road, this time riding the bike of his dreams. Congratulations Larry! Enjoy that sweet ride for many years to come. Article and photos by Stan Hill / Model: Dorothy Check out ‘Vlog#8 – Groundhog’s Day Photoshoot’ video on at

1954 CUSHMAN TRUCKSTER

Wild Bill acquired this unique vehicle from a good friend up in the hills of Loomis in 2015. The Cushman Truckster Model 782 was produced in Lincoln, Nebraska from 1954 to 1955. Small and light duty, they have been used from farm and stadium maintenance to ice cream sales. They were even used by the NYPD for parking enforcement! The 1954 Truckster is powered by a 4-Stroke, 18 horse power engine, it has a shaft drive, rear differential with leaf springs with a pay load of 600 lbs. It is equipped with a foot clutch, and a brake and gas pedal so it drives like a car. Alex, from Old E Metal Works, and Bill pulled the engine and transmission then boxed it and shipped it to Russ Kiler – President of the Cushman Club of California (www.californiacushmanclub.com) for a total rebuild.

Instead of a Wind Tunnel we used the freeway for aerodynamic testing

Bill said, “I never liked the front ends of these because they looked so light weight”. So Bill cut some cardboard to use as a template for the fairing and fender skirts and was then able to get the right size to cut 16 gauge steel to fit the front end. Bill had TJ, from Pagano Rod and Custom, cut some boss louvers in the fairing and used a bead roller on the skirts to give them strength and style. Bill made the dash board and front fender skirts out of 14 gauge steel. Bill said, “After some bondo, sanding and red oxide primer it started looking very cool”. Bill cut a piece of sheet metal for the rear end skirt and he and Alex installed the strong trailer hitch. They cut and welded the 1951 Pan-Head horn shorter. They also added USB ports, running lights, a 1947 fender light, umbrella holder, and a rear seat pan. Bill said the seat is so Roxanne can “put her fine butt on.” They also included some brackets for the Cadillac tail lights, bullet turn signals, tie-down hooks on the front forks and rear bed, and a skull shifter. Bill saw that a farmer in Marysville was selling a Cushman trailer

and immediately went to check it out. It was very rough but he bought it on the spot. Bill and Alex put a new axel, frame work, extending lounge skirts, and caddy tail lights on the trailer. Bob’s Upholstery laid new floor boards and made canvas tonneau covers for the Truckster and the trailer. Bill was very excited and proud when the California Auto Museum called and asked to display this beauty. It was on display for five months in the “Live Free: California Motorcycle Culture” exhibit. ‘Dirty Dave’ Davis Celebration of Life January 20 (Eureka): A Celebration of Life was held at the Eureka Theater for Dwight Stephen “Dirty Dave” Davis, a well respected and valued member/historian of the biker community in Humboldt and Shasta counties. Hundreds came from all over to show their Honor and Respect to a real biker and honorable man who is greatly missed by us all. Happy Trails Dirty Dave. No Laughing-No Smiling. Guardian angels - Brandon and Nereida were the couple that witnessed the accident, called 9-1-1 and also made sure the drunk driver stayed put. Brandon held Dave’s hand and talked to him the whole time until they took him to the hospital. He and Nereida have a spot in all our hearts for life.

Vanish

EVENT

I truly was born to vanish, whether it’s riding my Harley alone or with my sisters I have always just loved to go! Hence the nickname “VANISH”. Had I known just how fun riding was, I would have done it legally a long time ago. So as fate would have it, I got my motorcycle license, my Harley and the privilege of joining SOSWMC all at the same time and in that order. I look forward to each year that allows me to ride and be with my sisters. My purpose and commitment will always be to become a better rider and to always protect my fellow sisters for as long as I am able. I’m sure you’re wondering how I found the best women’s motorcycle club to be a part of! Well I was in the right place at the right time or I like to think of it as fate. On this one particular afternoon in Reno we were watching the pride parade and as the coolest group of women went by the announcer said “…and from Dobbins California - the Sisters of Scota Women’s Motorcycle Club” and to my surprise and awe I became very curious of the club. I introduced myself and learned that they actually lived a couple of houses

away from me. I gave them my info and then as fate again would have it I was at work, and a courier came in with a package, but not just any courier, it was Gramps. We looked at each other with joy as I knew in my heart that I wouldn’t let her get away this time without re introducing myself. Needless to say the rest is amazing history.

Paint On! T

he other day, I took my apprentice with me to an automotive paint supplier. I needed to restock our masking tape supplies. He asked why the tapes were color-coded. I explained that each color represented different performance characteristics. As we know there is no standard among the tape manufactures with reference to color codes. Consequently, I chose the largest producer, 3-M, for an example. Tapes are classified by the following characteristics: backing, adhesive, color, removal time, surface type, temperature, thickness, relative adhesion (high, medium or low), and of course width. Without writing a book on each character of each tape, let’s narrow it down to just a few, which will cover about 99% of your work. In our shop, we use 3M, 2750 blue, 2460 gold (it looks yellow), and fineline 470 series. Blue and yellow are great for taping out large areas. I prefer 1/2”, it lays down better than the larger widths around corners and curves. When you are working on complex graphics it helps visually to use different colors to keep track of things. When using paper for your tape outs, I like half on the paper and half on the substrate. Here is a little tip, if for some reason you need a soft edge, roll part of the tape back onto itself. For graphics, my old standby is 3M 471. It provides a razor sharp edge. Its plasticity allows for taking some pretty sharp loops. To prevent the tape from pulling off the substance do not pull it very hard. If you are trying to create a 180° turn, start with pulling at 90°, then 140°, and finally to 180°. Tape has a memory so you must train it for excellent results. As you create your loops, and they tend to bunch up on the inner surface, you can carefully cut through the high ridges with an exacto to have the inside corner lay flat. The cuts will overlap giving you the desired coverage. As you know all products related to automotive paint products are temperature sensitive, including tape. When you spend many hours laying out your tape at 72°F, do not always assume your lines will be in the same place the next day. At night when the temperature drops the adhesion properties change, also making changes in your lines. Make sure you also check corners to make sure they have held. A couple are sitting in their living room, sipping wine on St. Patty’s Day. Out of the blue, the wife says, “I love you so very, very much!” “Is that you or the wine talking?” jokes the husband. “It’s me,” says the wife, “Talking to the wine.” --------------------------------------------------------------“Happy Anniversary Mom and Dad,” gushed Sean, son No. 1. ‘Sorry I’m running late. I had an emergency at the hospital with a patient, you know how it is, and I didn’t have time to get you a gift.” “Not to worry,” said the father. “Important thing is we’re all together today.” Conor, Son No. 2 arrived. “You and Mom look great. Dad, I just flew in from Montreal between depositions and didn’t have time to shop for you.” “It’s nothing,” said the father. “We’re glad you were able to come.” Just then the daughter, Emma, arrived “Hello and happy anniversary! Sorry, but my boss is sending me out of town and I was really busy packing so I didn’t have time to get you two anything.” After they had finished dessert, the father said, “There’s something your mother and I have wanted to tell you for a long time. You see, we were really poor and very busy, but we managed to send each of you to college. Through the years your mother and I knew we loved each other very much, but we just never found the time to get married.” The three children gasped and said, “WHAT? You mean we’re bastards?” “Yup,” said the father, “Cheap-ass ones’ too”.

Ya’ know, I consider myself to be a positive kind of person but swear there are days when people just irritate the hell out of me and it’s then that I come to the realization that some people couldn’t be nice even if a Unicorn shoved a Fairy Wand up their ass while Judy Garland stood there singing Somewhere Over The Rainbow. --------------------------------------------------------------Brenda O’Malley is home making dinner, as usual, When Tim Finnegan arrives at her door. “Brenda, may I come in?” he asks. “I’ve Somethin to tell ya”. “ Of course you can come in, you’re always welcome, Tim. But where’s my husband?” “ That’s what I’m here to be telling ya, Brenda.” There was an accident down at the Guinness brewery...” “Oh, God no!” cries Brenda. “Please don’t tell me.” “ I must, Brenda Your husband Shamus is dead And gone. I’m sorry.” Finally, she looked up at Tim.. “How did it happen, Tim?” “ It was terrible, Brenda. He fell into a vat Of Guinness Stout and drowned.” “Oh my dear Jesus! But you must tell me the truth, Tim. Did he at least go quickly?” “Well, Brenda.... No. In fact, he got out three times to pee.” ------------------------------------------------------------------What Leprechauns do for kicks: Step 1: Go to the Pet Shop Step 2: Buy Bird Seeds Step 3: Ask Cashier how long it will take for birds to grow? Step 4: Watch reaction --------------------------------------------------------------Just got a piece of Lucky Charms cereal stuck between my toes walking through the kitchen. BIKER BAND REVUE:

The Charlie Brechtel Band

I

T ALL STARTED for Charlie Brechtel at his Aunt Mamie’s who owned a cathouse in New Orleans and his uncles were the Surgeon Brothers. Charlie said he was a little wise kid back in the day. All the blues guys used to come and play at his aunt’s bar in the cathouse. Charlie started singing with them and playing the drums a little bit, eventually they taught him how to play the guitar. The guitar came naturally to him. Charlie met the late legendary Deacon Jones while in New Orleans, and Deacon took Charlie under his wing. At the age of 17, Deacon asked Aunt Mamie if he could take Charlie to California. He settled in San Jose, started riding bikes and playing with Deacon, John Lee Hooker and The Allman Brothers. He began writing songs about Indian Larry, David Mann, along with Sonny Barger. It became his nitch, singing about the legends of our generation. Realizing he was preserving our history, he decided to double up and began doing movies. Dennis SanFilippo is the Executive Producer of Rebel on the Highway and the President of Big 7 Records where Eddie Money, Vince Gill, Christine VanHoy and The Charlie Brechtel Band have recorded. Dennis is also Charlie’s producer. Dennis met Charlie in 1990 about the same time Big 7 Record Company was working with the legendary blues organist Deacon Jones. Charlie and Deacon made three albums together under the Big 7 Record Company. The Charlie Brechtel Band has been the house band at The Buffalo Chip in Sturgis for the past 17 years, and will continue to play there for years to come. For 9 days he is the house band, opening for the big acts. Charlie is given a motorcycle to ride while he’s there…That makes him a dignitary of Sturgis! The Charlie Brechtel Band is also well received by the Russian people during their tour to Russia. When asked about US tours? His answer was plain and to the point “We are a biker band, playing the events where bikers go”. The Movie Rebel On The Highway is one of Charlie’s latest adventures with Executive Producer Dennis SanFilippo, produced and written by Charlie Brechtel and co-written by Sabrina Mounkes and directed by Cheryl Mcintyre. The soundtrack is incredible

with Deacon Jones, The Allman Brothers, Eddy Money, Charlie Musselwhite, Guitar Shorty, Guitar Max as well as The Charlie Brechtel Band. Rebel On The Highway is a biker movie with the bikers as the actors. It didn’t take much to train the bikers as actors, since all of them are playing themselves. The movie was filmed in Milwaukee, Buffalo, New York, New Orleans, Utah, Phoenix, Arizona, North and South Dakota, Nevada, and in Calaveras County in Northern California. Charlie also goes under his biker name “Good Time Charlie” and is the host of the Bikers Inner Circle (www.bicradio.com) for all of the latest biker events, biker music and news. The Charlie Brechtel Band along with Dennis SanFilippo want to thank the motorcycle industry, all who are a part of the movie, Good Day Sacramento on Channel 31 in Sacramento, Walt Gray of ABC10, the MC clubs, and all the riders and friends that have supported the movie….Keep the rubber side down and have a great 2018!
