eturning in this issue is the ‘Ride The Delta’ feature – please support the businesses on the California Delta that partnered up with us again! This is a great go-to resource of places to stop while out enjoying a ride along the Sacramento River. Let us know your favorite stops and we will do our best to include them in this biker friendly feature that will run through October. Since summer time riding is now here it is very important to remind ourselves to stay hydrated with good old fashion WATER! I know that there is nothing more refreshing than an ice cold beer on a hot summer day and that is totally fine as long as we include water too. Your body is working overtime to stay cool and you are losing much more water than you think. As we are riding we just do not notice how much we are sweating because the wind evaporates our sweat as soon as it hits the surface; so it’s easy to misjudge just how low we are on fluids. So as Terri always says “Drink up Bitches” (Honestly, she is not talking about water when she says that…but you get the meaning). And I hate to sound like a broken record, but that is because I have personal experience and was taken down by a severe case of heat exhaustion. Luckily, my older brother stepped in immediately recognizing the symptoms as I lay on the floor vomiting and convulsing. Trust me, it was no fun and I seriously thought I might die! I wouldn’t wish this on anyone. It came on quick and without much warning at a time when I was at my peak physical condition. It happened on a day when it was in the 90’s and I just refused to take the time to stop and drink water and cool down trying to get as much out of my day as possible. Please do not make this mistake it can really mess you up and even cause permanent damage or worse.

Happy Father’s Day!!

MY TWO CENTS: CATCH ME IF YOU CAN That’s right! It was me! I will not tell you what street I was on. I will not tell you what time it was. I will not tell you what city or town I was in, but I will tell you this, it was me who busted off your mirror. I did it because you cut me off on purpose. You could have seriously injured me and damaged my bike. Then you gave me that shit eating grin that only an annoying little person like you can give. You got everything you deserved and a lot less. You don’t have the right to cut bikers off with your car when we’re splitting lanes! Just like bikers don’t have the right to drag you out of your car and beat the dog shit out of you for driving like an asshole. I’m pretty sure one of them could be considered a felony and the other, well, I would call it self-defense. It’s a fact that it is 100% legal for motorcycles to split lanes in California but there are so many automobile drivers in this state that don’t know this. And they think it’s OK to use their car to prevent a motorcycle from splitting lanes. It’s also a well known fact that if a car hits a moving motorcycle, whether it’s an accident or not, the rider of the motorcycle will suffer serious injuries. Now I ask you, what kind of a person would turn his car into a moving motorcycle for no good reason? Is this person ignorant of the law that they try to take in their own hands? I can’t put it into words what kind of a person would do this. Well, I could but they wouldn’t print them in this magazine. I ride almost every day and close calls are nothing new, they happen so often I forget most of them, so I wouldn’t say I over reacted. If I over reacted I would be sitting in my cell right now waiting for visitors and my weekly commissary. The way I see at, it was using his mirror for the wrong reason. Maybe if he can’t see motorcycles coming in his mirror he won’t do something stupid. There are a lot of considerate drivers out there and they move over, they’re biker friendly. The dick head with the hanging mirror? Not so much. That’s my two cents. Ride like hell and have fun! Al Cagle www.rackandpull.com

ROAD TRIPPIN’:

Central Coast with Hillon2Wheels San Miguel - Pismo Beach - San Luis Obispo Morro Bay - San Simeon

Pismo Beach

E

arly April, we were invited by Terri’s longtime childhood friend in Texas to visit her while she was in San Luis Obispo during an assignment for her job. ‘nuff said, we jumped on the bike for a weekend getaway stay to the central coast. Typically, we would have taken the scenic Highway 1 route from Monterey along the coast but since the storms washed the road out just south of Big Sur we had to “reroute” and take Hwy 101. Not to worry though we are going to get plenty of time along the Pacific Coast Highway, so we were not too bummed. On Day 1, we turned off the highway to grab some lunch in San Miguel but instead found a historic Mission San Miguel Arcangel so we took the opportunity to check it out. During our ride, we recalled a California’s Gold episode by our mentor - Huell Howser in which he did a segment about the historic 700 mile El Camino Real trail (which is now Highway 101). The next time you’re traveling on Highway 101, check

out the mission bell trail indicators that linked the way to our California missions and were spaced by a oneday journey by horseback. “That’s Amazing!” As we continued onto San Luis Obispo, we met up with Lisa (Terri’s friend) at another iconic place on the Childhood friends Lisa and Terri central coast - the Madonna Inn. And just like we were Pismo Beach kids again, we sampled and squabbled over the last bite of their most popular desert – the Black Forest Cake! For decades, the Madonna family have welcomed travelers on Highway 101 into their peptolbismol pink restaurant and offered a lodging experience like no other in themed rooms like the in popular Caveman room or the Bridal Falls room. If you find yourself undecided check out the room gallery at www.madonnainn.com. Since time was short, we jumped into Lisa’s rental car and headed to downtown San Luis Obispo. We hung out in a cool little

pub called the Buffalo Pub and Grill that was down the street from the city’s most unusual and popular unofficial landmark - Bubblegum Alley on Higuera Street where we took selfies photos among the chewed up gum specimen on the alley wall.

Day 2 started with us heading south on Highway 1 to a highly recommended restaurant by the locals - Marisol At The Cliffs for a Sunday all-you–can-eat brunch (which also included bottomless mimosas). A beautiful restaurant that overlooks the ocean in Pismo Beach. SCORE!!! After brunch, we headed further down Hwy 1 for cocktails and sun on the back deck of the Ventana Grill and watch the dolphins play in the waves. Actually, we could have easily hung out

Morro Rock

there all day. Sadly, we said our goodbyes and jumped on our Roadmaster to head north to explore more of the central coastline. Next stop - Morro Bay and as you would expect there were a lot of seafood restaurants surrounding the rock Stan chillin and had we been hungry - we would have stopped. We were on a mission to get an up-close look of Morro Rock – a 581ft volcanic plug and historic sacred site of the native tribes. Impressive! On the bay side of Morro Rock is a jetty that was doing its job as huge breakers slammed into it with so much force you could almost feel it! We stood by watching as fishing boats strategically timed their entrance by gunning it in between the massive waves. The sun was setting and our final destination for the day was San Simeon - where we had reservations at the only oceanfront resort in Cambria and San Simeon called Cavalier Oceanfront Resort (www.cavalierresort.com) Once we checked in, the front desk suggested that we should head further north because the elephant seals were on the beach this time of year and is an impressive sight to see. So we quickly off loaded our stuff in our room and headed north on Hwy 1 because we’ve never seen elephant seals before – only harbor seals. We saw female and juvenile elephant seals with a few little ones basking on beach just a few feet away! They were adorable but HUGE, the big females are 1700lbs and 12 ft long and we were told later that they are a bit stinky - thankfully the wind must have been just right because we didn’t notice. On our way back to our hotel, we pulled over to put our kickstand down at William Randolph Hearst Memorial Beach (whew - that’s a mouth full!) for a walk out onto the long pier all the while taking in the breathtaking views on the central coastline. By the time we got back to our room, we were pleasantly surprised to see a couple of community oceanfront fire pits located just out of our slider door. We took full advantage to watch as the sun set and as continued...

the staff at the resort light it for the guests – it was not long before we were joined by a few other resort guests. It was so relaxing to listen to the waves crash onto the beach…. with a cocktail….by a fire pit. Later back in our room and a bit chilled, we decided to light up the fireplace in the room. A very nice touch with everything you needed to light it up - ready to go for a great room ambiance. The next morning we had BIG plans, we were on our way to do the ‘tourist-y’ thing at Hearst Castle. Honestly, it’s something we have wanted to do for a long time! You ride in, park and check in at the visitors center before boarding a tour specific bus for a 5 mile scenic ride with an audio observations from game show host Alex Trebek’s along the way. This is a great experience and you will be blown away by this majestic “ranch” as well as the history of this publishers evolution at the turn of the century. Our apologies, permit$ are required by most California $tate Parks – so this is one you’ll have to see firsthand as we are not in the position to get in a fight with the $tate; however, as a publisher like William Randolph Hearst - I am certain that he would get a chuckle of the satire of such an absurd regulation.

LEGEND SUSPENSION Revo Shocks for Dynas

Al Cagle and CJ Barham

As the ongoing popularity of the Harley-Davidson Dyna motorcycle grows, Legend Suspension (www. legendsuspensions.com) has followed the trend with an unbeatable rear suspension set up specifically for a Dyna. We recently met up with a local NorCal stunt rider, CJ Barham at Rack and Pull Industries in Rancho Cordova to spotlight the Legend Revo shocks for Dynas. We wanted to test them on CJ’s bike because we knew he would really test the shocks to their limit. TRM NorCal teamed up with Rack and Pull Industries because they were able install the new shocks and validate that the motorcycle, swing arm, and motor were perfectly aligned before CJ actually hit the road. It was by using the STRAIGHT SHOOTER - a proprietary laser measuring system invented by Al Cagle the owner of Rack and Pull Industries. If your motorcycle has any kind of handling problem this is the only place in Northern California to go to have the problem diagnosed accurately which will save you frustration and money trying to fix the problem by guessing the nature of the issue. Or if your bike has been in a crash, Rack and Pull Industries will verify if the frame is damaged or not – they also have the capability to straighten the frame to get you back on the road. Call for an appointment (916) 899-1188 and check them out at www. rackandpullindustries.com Once the new Legend Revo Shocks were installed and the proper sag was set up by simply turning the spring of

the shock up or down as needed, and the bike was properly aligned for CJ to turn it up a notch and let it rip! The shocks have an adjustment dial so you can dial in the rebound perfectly for your weight and riding style. A lighter solo rider might have it set on one or two and a heavier or two up rider, or aggressive rider might set it at the higher numbers. I had a set on my Road King, so I had a pretty good idea what CJ was going to think about them, but then again I never did ride anything like the way CJ rides. After putting the Revo’s through a grueling workout, the smile on CJ’s face when he pulled his helmet off told the story. He was very impressed with how the bike felt and he told TRM NorCal that he “felt safer and more in control of the bike with the new shocks”. This happens by providing a smooth compliant ride soaking up the bumps with ease giving you that feeling that the rear tire is in constant contact with the road. Legend Suspension produces their high quality products at their facility in Sturgis, South Dakota and you can find them at any shop that offers Drag Specialties products. Thanks to CJ, Al of Rack and Pull Industries and Legend Suspension for helping to pull this together. BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT:

CORBIN FACTORY Home of America’s Original Custom Motorcycle Saddle

Us with Mike Corbin

Returning Corbin Customers with long time (33 years) employee Julio

TRM NorCal was very appreciative to Mike Corbin for taking a big part of his day for a personal tour of the Corbin Seats facility in Hollister. And since the Hollister Rally is right around the corner, we would strongly recommend that you go over to their weekend Open House during the Independence Rally (June 30-July 2). You can also ride in to have a Corbin seat specially customized to your behind, visit some great industry vendors, listen to some live music or grab a bite to eat at the Wizard Café. But we strongly recommend that all rally-goers take the self-guided tour behind the scenes of the facility. It is an opportunity to see firsthand exactly what goes into the making of all the Corbin products. Anyone that rides has heard of the Corbin custom fitted seats for most every make and model motorcycle on and off the road and it goes without saying that ‘Corbin’ is a household name within our industry; but during the tour you will also see that they do a lot more. Producing other products in Hollister like saddlebags, trunks, and even an electric three wheel car called the Sparrow.

Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 14

During our personal tour, we were inspired by the story of how Mike had started this company and built it over the years. One word comes to mind in order to accurately describe the man behind this amazingly successful business…Mike Corbin at his core is an innovator. Mike grew up in Massachusetts and as a young man joined the Navy where he mastered his electrical skills while working as a ship electrician. After completing his service with the Navy, Mike returned home to Massachusetts and continued working as an electrician eventually relocating to Connecticut. Always having an affinity for motorcycles he kept riding as he built his electrical business in Connecticut. At this point, he was riding a ’64 Norton which he dismantled, redesigned and reupholstered the seat to his preference – it was at a New Hampshire rally his motorcycle seat caught the attention of another Norton rider. A true businessman, Corbin sold the refurbish seat during the rally and then road his bike home (mind you, without its saddle) yet with $40 dollars in his wallet. Once the word spread, more people started to order Corbin’s custom-made seats thru Sal - a savvy owner of a local Harley-Davidson dealership - Hartford H-D. Soon it was obvious that Mike would have to decide between going full time in a newly discovered market of custom-made motorcycle seats or to stick with his trade as an electrician. By 1968 the decision had been made and it was full steam ahead making seats in a small facility in Hartford, Connecticut. Over the years the company just kept growing and expanding to new products and in the 1980’s had opened up what is now Corbin Pacific here on the west coast by first starting out in a 11,000 sq ft facility in Castroville before moving in 1996 into their new 82,000 sq ft facility where it is now in Hollister. Over the decades, Mike has seen several downturns in the economy which affected the motorcycle industry. Mike shared with TRM NorCal that he during one of those down

times he had to sell his beloved Indian Motorcycle collection to save the company. Through it all, Mike Corbin has always found a way to persevere with hard work and a sincere dedication to his employees and customers. Mike obtained four patents in the 1980’s for integrated molding, another leap forward at that time which has put Corbin’s at the top of the industry with unmatched capabilities. Since that time they have been awarded with numerous other patents that are proudly displayed on Corbin’s office wall. Always striving for growth, Mike enrolled into Harvard University into the owners and managers course to build upon his business skills. Keep in mind that he ‘went back to school’ while in his 60’s – so maybe that will gives you a little clue as to how forward thinking this man is in his personal quest for improvement. At the end of our interview, TRM NorCal asked Mike what has been the biggest key to his business success - he stated without hesitation “great employees”. He said he does his utmost to treat his employees good – knowing that if they (his employees) are happy, then his employees will treat his customers good – Go Team Corbin! RIDE PRIDE:

1966 GARAGE SPECIAL

A

huge thank you to this month’s RIDE PRIDE owner, Steve Romero for jumping on his head-turning ride over to Manteca from San Francisco for our early morning photo shoot at Binford’s Custom Cycles. During our photo shoot, Steve shared that he was one of Binford’s Custom Cycles first customers at the old location down the street (affectionately referred to as the ‘small shop’) which is a few blocks away from their new expansive and beautiful location at 1297 N. Main Street. It is obvious that Here we go again with another NorCal RIDE PRIDE that was built in the bike owner’s residential garage. If you have been out to any of the bigger motorcycle shows in the area then I bet you’ve had the privilege of seeing this one in person. Stacy McCleary has won trophies up and down the state with his custom builds. Seriously, if you haven’t seen it yet - it is obvious that you need to get out more! The best we can do is present it to you on a glossy magazine page. Stacy is obviously a talented fabricator with a keen eye for the cool factor, because this bike is just plain cool. Stacy dedicates his spare time hitting swap meets to gather up parts for his builds and he has more than a couple under his belt, most all of them award winning motorcycles that he has built in his home garage. We love these garage builds because you know that they are built from passion and an undeniable talent and vision, so let’s check out what Stacy put into this ground up build. H

ave you ever been faced when insurmountable odds are being wielded against you? You feel like life is crashing in around you, you are being engulfed by a neverending wave of bad luck, or you feel like you are cuffed and trapped in a box and can’t break free? Maybe your marriage is falling apart or you have a family member who is addicted and just can’t break free from the satanic hold addiction has on their life. Maybe you have lost your job and the bills are piling up or you are stuck in a job that has a stranglehold on and you literally feel chocked to death. I am here to tell you, you are not alone. Thousands have dealt with the same issues, and thousands have come out on the other side victorious. Nobody said it is going to be easy, and it may take you to the end of your rope where you feel like you are barely hanging on to a little string. Have courage and don’t give up. Find the strength in a power greater than yourself to move through those tragic times. Time and time again throughout history, we read stories of some of the greatest victories, when everyone thought they were doomed. Marriages healed, recovery happens, new jobs come about, and with a little time and effort, finances are recovered. See, when we rely on our own understanding, we are limited to what we believe is possible. But, with a power from the most-high, we regain our composure, rejuvenate our courage, and make a stand for victory. There was a young boy named David facing a giant. Insurmountable odds were against him. The giant was huge and everyone was afraid to fight

him. Your problem could be just as huge, but what happens next could surely happen for you as well, if you can just believe, and call on the One who can save you and get you back on track. The young boy proclaimed that he would face the giant, walked to the stream and picked up 5 smooth stones. Goliath, the giant, laughed at the boy and then cursed him up and down to intimidate him. The boy said, “You come to me with sword, spear and javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord. Today, the Lord will conquer you”. As the giant moved forward, David put 1 stone in the sling, and with one heave, imbedded the stone in the giants’ forehead, and Goliath came crashing down to the ground where David grabbed the giants’ sword and cut of his head. Then, the whole world knew there is a God in Israel. No matter what your going through, grab your stone and your sling, and know there is a God, and he is for you and can bring you every bit of strength and courage you need. There is nothing He can’t handle and help you achieve victory in your life, and with your issues. Need help with encouragement? See you at Thunder Road Biker Church. 1 Samuel 17:46 Today, the Lord will conquer you, and I will kill you and cut off your head. And then I will give the dead bodies of your men to the birds and wild animals, and the whole world will know there is a God in Israel.” (NLT) “Never Ride Alone” Pastor Johnny Lujan Thunder Road Church

BIKER BAND REVUE: rogue

Genre: Rock and Roll / Cover and Original On August 13, 2017 Rogue is celebrating its 20th anniversary. This is a huge milestone after a much-storied career. The original band line-up in 1997 was Randy Scoles - lead vocals, Bobby Contreras - drums, Nick Nichols - bass, and John Hinchman – Vocals, rhythm and acoustic guitar. Scott Johnson - Played lead guitar, leaving the band in 2007. Today Gregory Young holds that position. Dedication, hard work, and intense love of music, coupled with their extremely energetic stage performance, has put Rogue on the forefront of the music scene. Their cover songs include some of the greatest rock and roll artist of all time: Led Zeppelin, Bad Company, Rolling Stones, the Beatles, Journey, AC/ DC, Janis Joplin, Aerosmith, Van Halen, CCR, Guns N’ Roses to name just a few. Rogue also has an excellent collection of original songs. Their albums are Rogue (released 1998) / Rogue – Better Life (released 2001) are available for download at iTunes. Randy Scoles: Lead singer/songwriter - Randy has a natural ability to totally seduce his audience, with a voice that is passionate and explosive. His incredibly high - energy stage performance, evokes the audience to become one with the beat. Randy is also lead singer, along with Paul Holdgate for the Greg Golden Band. He was also lead singer for the late guitar great Ronnie Montrose. One of Randy’s earlier experiences was the Hard Rock Project with Bandgernade. After they disbanded in 1994, Randy took a hiatus from the music scene for a year. After some encouragement from his wife, that his talents were being wasted joined the band Crossroads, with Don Nehasil on drums, and Nick Nichols on bass. He performed with Crossroads just under a year. In June of 1997, Randy left Crossroads to start Rogue with Nick Nichols. Nick Nichols: Bass/vocals - In the past Nick has played bass with Ground Zero and Contagious. He’s now currently playing bass, with Frank Hannon’s (from Tesla) band “Kaleidoscope” as well as Rogue. Without exception, Nick’s ability to rock the audience with his instrument is over the top, harmonically challenging and just plain awesome.

Bobby Contreras: Drums – from 1983-1985 Bobby was the original drummer for City Kid, before they changed the band’s name to “Tesla”. 1985 until the birth of Rogue in 1997, Bobby played for Piranha. Bobby is a genius on the drums. He possesses the speed, energy and power; it takes to make a great drummer. If you haven’t watched him play, you have probably missed your chance of a lifetime to see a rock legend in the making. Gregory Young: Guitar/vocals – Previous guitar player for Walking Tall and Zoppie. Greg was also the singer that replaced Randy Scoles in the late 80’s for Contagious. Gregory is a complete badass, plain and simple. He has the ability to use his guitar as a slave, to perform with his rhythmic fingers and making it look effortless in the process. Rogue has shared the stage with Bad Company, David Lee Roth, Mr. Big, Tesla, Great White, Y & T, Jefferson Airplane, Pat Travers, Fastball, Journey, Thin Lizzy, Greg Golden Band, Black Crowes and Frank Hannon’s band (Tesla) Kaleidoscope. Rogue has performed under the spotlights of some of the famous theatrical stages: Arco Arena, Memorial Auditorium as well as performing at the Mark & Brian Show. In June of 2002, The Discovery Channel aired it’s first of a five-season run “Monster Garage” hosted by Jesse James, an accomplished West Coast custom chopper builder. One of Rogue’s original tracks from their first album, “The Well” was featured. In August of 2016, Randy was diagnosed with 2nd stage multifocal prostate cancer. The news rocked his world, as well as his wife, Stephanie, family and friends. Paul Holdgate, along with Steve, and Nancy Price and others, organized a benefit for Randy. On Friday October 7, 2016,“Rockin for Randy” was standing room only. An all-star cast of family, friends, and fans, along with host of other bands came out to show their support. TRM NorCal is happy to report that at the time of writing the revue, Randy’s prognosis is looking good, although he is not entirely out of the woods yet. It will be about a year before the doctors will say all clear, but his numbers are good and Randy says he feels great! Randy also wanted to convey to readers the importance of wellness prevention. Early detection is only possible, if certain test have been done routinely, to catch the disease process, before it gets out of control. Thank you Randy, we all need to hear that. SPRING FLING 2017 April 15 (Sacramento): Wow! What a turn out for the Sacramento Red and White Spring Fling! The place was packed with NorCal bikers with an entry into the event that included a juicy meal of tri-tip or chicken - your choice. And entertainment from a crowd favorite - The Fryed Brothers Band! Harry Fryed and crew were on stage lighting up the night with everyone’s favorite tunes and they even debut a couple of new songs they’ve added to their playlist. Spring Fling attendees were the fortunate ones to hear it first! Next time you’re “thinking” about going, but never have made it yet - I would encourage you to come to the next Sacramento Red and White event this fall, Biketoberfest. You will have a great time and will meet lots of folks that are there for the laid back easy going atmosphere. This year they had a guest celebrity from Fresno Red and White, Merl Hefferman who you have probably

heard about collecting 5 truckloads of new bicycles for underprivileged kids in the Fresno area with the help of the local biker community. Merl suggested that we do the same here in Sacramento Raffle Bike - so stay tuned. The members and all of their volunteers really do a great job putting these events on and the turnout for this one shows that. On top of the great entertainment they always have some top of the line raffle prizes, this year the main event was this motorcycle (insert photo here) that came From Sierra Steel Harley-Davidson in Chico. Drum roll, and the winner is Nate from Redway California. They tried to give Nate a call but he was not picking up, I sure bet he will be surprised when he finds out though. However from a patiently waiting photographer standpoint - if you buy a raffle ticket to win a motorcycle -PLEASE come to the damn event - so I can for once get your surprised face in the magazine! J Special shout out to Sacramento Red and White for a great evening had by all! It was nice to see several smiling faces that I had not seen for a while. Until next time ride safe and see you all soon. Article and photos by Stan Hill Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 30

12 Annual Humboldt B.A.C.A. 100 Mile Run th

Steve

April 30 (Eureka): It started as a perfect riding day after a very long season of rain with the local bikers just a wee excited to ride for a great cause for B.A.C.A. stands for Bikers Against Child Abuse. I rode in from Shelter Cove to met Steve Johnson, a fellow Cove Rat at Redwood Harley-Davidson. We quickly signed up, bought raffle tickets and got acquainted and reacquainted with the 100 or so riders eagerly ready for a spring ride. There were lots of local patches there to be seen: B.A.C.A. (the host club), Fog Dogs, Old Coots on Scoots, Cove Rats, UBNC and Family Humboldt with a strong turnout. The ride began as promised at exactly twelve noon. First, the long line of motorcycles went up Hwy 101 North to Arcata. Then, the leaders took us through back roads east of Arcata. The skies were clear, blue and sunny. The farmlands were Irish green with beautiful

bucolic scenery and peacefully grazing farm animals. We arrived at E & O Bowl in Arcata where we spent an enjoyable half hour socializing. Then, off we rode taking more back roads north to Trinidad where we stopped at The Ocean Grove Restaurant and Lounge for more libations and food. As the pack left, Steve and I noticed an older UBNC member with a Can-Am Spyder that he couldn’t start because it was stuck in gear. We tried to help figure out what was wrong; but, we too were unable to get it started. He told us AAA was coming so we left. Knowing we had

On the way home, Steve and I joined the Family Humboldt riders and stopped by the hospital in Eureka to visit Zack, a recently injured rider. He was in good spirits and was happy to hear our stories from this most enjoyable ride. Now, the rainy season blues are in the past, bikes are polished, spirits are lifted and the B.A.C.A. members have helped us all turn our sights forward toward a promising new riding season. missed the next stop in Fieldbrook, we opted to ride on to the Blue Lake Casino in Blue Lake and wait for the group there. After about five minutes the impressive pack of riders arrived and everyone eagerly awaited the results of the poker draw and the 50/50 raffle. The Blue Lake Casino bar was alive with good vibrations and camaraderie. The contest winners were announced and the day reluctantly came to a close. RIDE DESTINATION:

Bakersfield – Lake Isabella – Wofford Heights

Around Lake Isabella

T

his month we will be heading down to the central part of the state. We decided to visit some friends and participate in a PGR mission in Lake Isabella. I think most of us are familiar with the Patriot Guard Riders. It’s a group that, when requested, assists in any way it can with funerals for veterans, law enforcement, firemen and or any and all first responders. The PGR will help organize, set up, or if needed, keep out some of the riff raff that show up now and then to try and disrupt and disrespect the services of those being honored. As an example of one of their missions, a family that was having some financial problems needed to get their loved one’s cremated remains from California to Georgia. California PGR members got with other members and they decided to “Pony Express” this vet to his final resting place in Georgia. Time to head out, so we packed up and putted South on Highway 99 on through Fresno. In Bakersfield, we found our way to Highway 178 and after traversing the rest of the valley, began the climb up into the mountains. It’s a beautiful ride with the mountains on your right and the rushing Kern River on your left. One thing we noticed as we entered the Kern River Canyon was that the sign designating the number

That’s Italian in Kernville

of deaths on the river was gone. I guess some snowflakes thought that the sign was too scary and they had it taken down. The Sheriff’s Department has overruled these nut jobs and the sign will be back soon. The river is dangerous and people should be warned. Getting close to 300 people dead since 1968. At the VFW in Lake Isabella we would be attending a memorial service and luncheon. Afterward we would escort that vet on his ‘last ride’ around the Lake. So, actually, this month it wasn’t really our destination ride, it was the final destination ride for Anthony “Tony” West. This being the month we celebrate Memorial Day, we thought this would be a nice tribute to one of many. Our digs for the weekend would be The Barewood Inn located in Wofford Heights. It’s a nice quiet place and really reasonable. We checked in and kicked it for a while before covering the few miles over to Kernville for dinner. ‘That’s Italian’ is our preferred restaurant in the area. The best spaghetti and meatballs you will find. The next morning, we made our way to VFW 7665 in Lake Isabella. There we met John Archeletta, one of the main organizers of this mission. He gave us the itinerary for the

day and a little background on the group. Later we met Robert Firestine, one of the State VP’s and he gave us a nice welcome. Quite a few bikes had already started to line up down the street when we arrived. All told, about 40 bikes would participate.

As more and more scoots rolled in, Cindy introduced Saloon in herself to Diane, Tony’s Glennville lovely wife. We found out that Tony was a medic in Vietnam and a heck of a nice guy. They loved the area and a few years before had sold their house in Santa Maria and moved to Kernville. During the service, many vets were thankful for his commitment to helping and improving the lives of Veterans in any way he Saddle Sore

Flag Line could. He will be missed! After the service, we enjoyed lunch at the VFW and chatted with a few of the riders who had come to honor Tony. Once everyone had been fed, it was time to take Tony on his last ride around the Lake he loved. So, Diane climbed aboard a friend’s trike, she was given Tony’s urn and everyone rolled out. Due to road conditions, we were not able to take the complete ride around the lake, so we stopped at a turnout that had an awesome view of the lake, to pay our last respects. We thanked Diane for allowing us to be part of Tony’s “ride out.” It ended up being a great day. Well organized and one of the most heartfelt rides we’ve done. So thanks to all those that made it, including the many American Legion Riders that came in support. “Greater love hath no man than he lay down his life for his brother.” Our sincere thanks for those who serve. We had an excellent dinner that night and hung out at the Kernville Saloon for a while before calling it a night. Up early the next morning, we took that great and twisty Highway 155 to the Saddle-Sore Saloon in Glennville for breakfast before heading home (Heads up! Cash only, no credit cards.) By the way, Lake Isabella is now back up to normal levels. I guess for the last few years or so, the locals have been calling it Lake Isapuddle! Later. 8th Annual Rabbit Run Motorcycle Ride

April 8 (Marysville): The weatherman was predicting heavy showers the day of the Sisters of Scota WMC Rabbit Run. What’s a little water, when the foster children of Environmental Alternatives were waiting patiently to get their Easter baskets when the riders pulled into Lake Francis RV Resort near Dobbins? The rain gods proved to have a little compassion and didn’t let loose till all the riders were safely at the resort….then it poured. Environmental Alternatives is a nonprofit foster family agency. Environmental Alternatives plays an important role

in Northern California matching nurturing, and loving homes for foster children. In addition to placement in individual families, Environmental Alternatives operates several 6-bed group homes and a 30-bed group home. They also offer transitional rental housing for youth aged 18 to 24 who have aged out of foster care. Environmental Alternatives is also the proud owners and operators of Lake Francis RV resort near Dobbins. Open to the public, the proceeds from the resort go to sending approximately 100 foster children to their kids camp: Camp Rockin’ U along with nearly 500 young campers, ages 7 to 14 not in foster care. The Sisters of Scota Women’s MC saw the need and began their run seven years ago to help Environmental Alternatives to continue their journey and to help send foster children to Camp Rockin’ U in the summer. Registration and the ride began at the Golden Eagle Market in Marysville. Riders prepared for the ride, bought raffle tickets, ride pins and chowed down a complimentary hot breakfast and coffee. All proceeds go to purchasing Easter

baskets for the children along with school supplies in August and Christmas gifts later in the year. Under the covered pavilion, a great Easter dinner of ham and turkey along with all the fixings was served to the bikers. Swankmasters Band entertained the crowd. Once again the Sisters of Scota outdid themselves with the raffle prizes. A leather jacket donated by C&E Auburn Indian and VTwin and a New Rider course donated by Sacramento Harley was just a few of the great raffle prizes for the event. And a $4,000 check was presented to Camp Rockin’ U at Lake Francis Resort to provide scholarships to Environmental Alternatives foster kids! Great Job ladies! See you again next year! PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT:

So small - So aggravating! Aglet--- very few people know what this word means... with the possible exception of Doc Martin and Tom McCann despite the fact that most of us touch them every day; but many swear at them quite often. An Aglet is that little plastic or metal tip on the end of your boot or shoelaces. When they stay ‘pointy’ they make lacing your shoes easy. But, when they are frayed and twice their normal diameter-- you can’t get the damned end into the hole so you can tighten up your laces and throw a leg over your motorcycle and get into the wind…that little aglet can be a JERK! When you eventually get ‘in the wind’ and are motoring often you look down and it becomes apparent why the ends of your boot laces have been beaten into a broom-straw. Inches of your laces have escaped out pants cuff and are flailing around in the wind and tattering off the engine cases of your bike. You either stop then or continue on – knowing that you are eventually going to have to knot up those stinking laces once more. And on long rides this ritual is often at every stop there after. Some boot or shoe laces hold a knot well…but in my experience they are few and far between. I have been posted along a most simple product that has solved this dilemma. LaceLocker is really nothing more than a nicely designed folded up piece of material with strategically placed ‘hook and loop’ (Velcro) fasteners. You slide one end behind your loose laces and it holds itself in place when folded. Then you tie a single knot in your laces and lay the loose ends down the middle and fold the two flaps in and they hook together with the hook and loop fastener and maintain your laces in place: keeping the knot secure as a result. This is simple and really effective. Although not a process that is easy with your gloves on…but who ties their shoes with their gloves on anyway? There are more than two dozen styles of product (www. LaceLocker.com) to fit every person’s style for $7.95. I like the fact that they have two for bikers…black for men, and

A lacelocker on riding shoes pink for lady riders---with SKULL AND CROSS BONES. When I stop to have a cool one at the watering hole…I won’t have to tie my boots up when I get off my motor.

Tech Tips THE GREAT OIL DEBATE- PART II

Last time we talked a bit about the quality of modern oils and diffused some of the mis-information on the synthetic verses fossil oil debate. Now we can dive into some of the technical aspects. At the risk of stating the obvious, different oils are formulated for different applications. In the realm of motor oils, there is a significant difference between automotive and motorcycle products. Even more so, between air cooled and water cooled engines. The most significant difference is in the additive package. These are chemicals, minerals, and other products that tailor the oil to the application. Air cooled engines have much greater operating temperature fluctuations than their water cooled counterparts. Higher levels of zinc, phosphorus, and molybdenum ensure film barrier protection even when the temperatures threaten the oil’s performance. Moving on to temperatures, how hot is too hot? In a water cooled vehicle, when the coolant reaches its boiling point, we can easily conclude that the temperature is too hot. What’s the “red flag” in an air cooled bike? Modern V-Twins run extremely hot due to stringent EPA requirements, which dictate very lean air/fuel mixtures. Oil temperatures in older engines (In the HD world, Evolution and older models) hovered in the 180-200 degree area. It’s not uncommon for the Twin Cams to run in the 210-230 degree region. That’s pretty hot, but not overheating per se. Fossil oils begin breaking down almost immediately in what is considered normal operating temperatures, but at 260 degrees rapid break down begins. At this point it’s time to shut down and let things cool off. Going back to our discussion on the fossil oil verses synthetic, breakdown occurs much later with synthetic At this point, a quick snap shot explanation on multigrade oils is in order. An oil formulated as 10w-40 is no thicker than 10 weight oil under winter (10w) conditions, meaning below freezing. The 40 means it is no thinner than 40 weight oil at 212° Fahrenheit. So, the first number tells us the performance of the

oil at or below the temperature of freezing water, and the second number tells us the performance at the temperature of boiling water. The chemicals added to the oil to accomplish this are called Viscosity Index Improvers (VIIs). Expanding on this anymore would be like watching grass grow, or paint dry. You get the point!

Lastly, follow your bike manufacturer’s recommendation for type and viscosity. Fossil oils for Harley-Davidson Big Twins are all different for the engine, transmission, and primary. There are a few synthetic oils that are formulated to run in all three systems in Harley-Davidson Big Twins. They are wet clutch compatible (suitable for primary fluid), resist shear (transmission), and of course can be run in the engine. Remember that the venerable Sportster shares its transmission and primary fluid, so there are fluids designed specifically for that application (Sportrans, etc.). Ride safe!

A farmer was selling his peaches door to door. He knocked on a door and a shapely 30-something woman dressed in a very sheer negligee answered the door. He raised his basket to show her the peaches and asked, “Would you like to buy some peaches, ma’am?” She pulled the top of the negligee to one side and asked, “Are they as firm as this?” He nodded his head and said, “Yes ma’am,” and a little tear ran from his eye. Then she pulled the other side of her negligee off asking, “Are they nice and pink like this?” The farmer said, “Yes,” and another tear came from the other eye. Then she unbuttoned the bottom of her negligee and asked, “Are they as fuzzy as this?” He again said, “Yes,” and broke down crying. She asked, “Oh, dear, why on earth are you crying?” Drying his eyes he replied, “The drought got my corn, the flood got my soy beans, a tornado leveled my barn……. And now I do believe I’m gonna’ get screwed out of my peaches.” _______________________________________________ An air traffic control tower suddenly lost communication with a small twin engine aircraft. A moment later the tower land line rang and was answered by one of the employees. An old pal of the Pilot’s, whom was a passenger, was riding shotgun since the Co-Pilot called in ill . He contacted the Tower and yelled,; “Mayday, mayday!! The Pilot of this aircraft had an instant and fatal heart attack. I grabbed his cell phone and as I hoped, he had the Tower on his speed dial memory. I am flying upside down at 18,000 feet and traveling at 180 mph. Mayday, mayday!!” The employee in the tower had put him on speaker phone immediately. “Calm down, we acknowledge you and we’ll guide you down after a few questions. The first thing is not to panic, remain calm. He began his series of questions: Tower: “How do you know you are traveling at 18,000 feet??” Aircraft: “I can see that it reads 18,000 feet on the Altimeter dial in front of me.” Tower: “Okay, that’s good, remain calm. How do you know you’re traveling at 180 mph?” Aircraft: “I can see that it reads 180 mph on the Airspeed dial in front of me.” Tower: “Okay, this is great so far, but it’s heavily overcast, so how do you know you’re flying upside down?” Aircraft: “The sh*t in my pants is running out of my shirt collar.” _______________________________________________ The husband leans over and asks his wife, “Do you remember the first time we had sex together over sixty years ago? We went behind the village tavern where you leaned against the back fence and I made sweet, passionate love to you.” Yes, she says, “I remember it fondly.” OK, he says, “How about taking a stroll around there again and we can do it for old time’s sake?” “Oh Jim, you old devil, that sounds like a crazy, but thrilling idea!” A police officer sitting in the next booth heard their conversation and, having a chuckle to himself, he thinks to himself, I’ve got

to see these two old-timers having sex against a fence. I’ll just keep an eye on them so there’s no trouble. So he follows them. The elderly couple walks haltingly along, leaning on each other for support aided by walking sticks. Finally, they get to the back of the tavern and make their way to the fence. The old lady lifts her skirt and the old man drops his trousers. As she leans against the fence, the old man moves in. Then suddenly they erupt into the most furious sex that the policeman has ever seen. This goes on for about ten minutes while both are making loud noises and moaning and screaming. Finally, they both collapse, panting on the ground. The policeman is amazed. He thinks he has learned something about life and old age that he didn’t know existed. After about half an hour of lying on the ground recovering, the old couple struggle to their feet and put their clothes back on. The policeman, is still watching and thinks to himself, this is truly amazing, I’ve got to ask them what’s their secret? So, as the couple passes, he says to them, “Excuse me, but that was something else. You must’ve had a fantastic sex life together. Is there some sort of secret to all this to give hope to my wife and I for our future together? Shaking, the old man is barely able to reply, “Sixty years ago that wasn’t an electric fence.” _______________________________________________ Men have two emotions: Hungry and Horny. If you see him without an erection, make him a sandwich. Life is like a jar of Jalapeno peppers-what you do today, might burn your ass tomorrow. Some people are like a Slinky--not really good for anything, but you still can’t help but smile when you shove them down the stairs.

Happy Father’s Day

to all you phenom Daddy’s that make the world a safer place for your children. It takes a real Man putting forth the effort & time to be a Father.
