erry Christmas! We hope you have a blessed and safe holiday season surrounded by family and close friends! It is hard to believe that with this issue - 2017 is coming to a close. It also a time to reflect on the life changing events during this past year. 2018…I am having a hard time wrapping my head around that one - it still seems like a futuristic time within a movie. Never the less, it is as real as can be and it does not matter how hard we try - we cannot stop or even slow the hands of time. It is with every passing year that I realize that ‘time’ is becoming much more important to me. It is apparent that the time spent with family, close friends and the time spent doing the activities that Terri and I enjoy doing together are a top priority. Nothing brings this home more than the names and faces that we see in every December issue of this magazine as we honor our fallen fellow motorcycle riders with our LAST RIDES Memorial collage. It is also a reminder that we are here only by God’s good grace. When it is time to be called home, we do not get to choose when or how we go. Use this as a reminder to make the most of every day and to live a full and interesting life. For those of you that are not able to be with family members during the Holiday season, we totally understand. It has been four years and we have not been able to see our oldest son (an active duty Marine) and his family. However next year, I am going to try really hard to carve out a chunk of time to head to North Carolina for a much needed face to face visit. We do find a way to stay connected so we expect that at some time we will be visiting again through Skype or Face Time. Not as good as being there, but it is a lot better than not seeing their faces at all. This is one area that technology has improved our lives immensely and we are grateful for that. May your hearts be full and your minds free! Merry Christmas! Stan & Terri Hill

MY TWO CENTS: H

WELL ... IT’S THAT TIME AGAIN

ere we go again, another holiday season. I haven’t been wild about the holidays for a while now, but I am enjoying the cold and brisk weather and all the winter scents in the air as I’m riding my motorcycle. In the morning I can smell bacon, coffee and even biscuits and gravy. It puts a smile on my face while I’m riding to work. The ride home is filled with the smell of wood burning fireplaces, fried chicken and smoking meat. For this reason alone, I like this time of year! I’m not saying Bah humbug! And I’m not saying I don’t like Christmas! I love my family and friends and I love family gatherings. I’m just saying….. I’m not wild about the holidays like I was in years past. Maybe it’s because our kids are grown and gone, and they have their own in-laws they have to go see for the holidays. Maybe if we didn’t have to share our kids and grand kids it would be a different story. It’s just not the same as it was when the kids were younger. It’s true when they say Christmas is for kids. We get invited to go to their in-laws, I don’t really feel comfortable in their house and they look uncomfortable around me, they look at me like I’m some kind of serial killer. I went to sit down on the couch when we were talking and I just touched their cat and I must have scared the shit out of it because it took off like a bat out of hell, and they looked at me like I just shoe laced the cat in the face. That’s not the case! Whatever, I don’t care, I don’t like cats anyway. I don’t know why they’re not comfortable around me. It could be because I’m not a soft and fuzzy kind of guy, or it could be because I don’t drink eggnog, I drink whisky and I drop the occasional cuss word, and when I do they look at me like I just threw up on their front porch. Anyway! We hope you make the most of your holidays and we wish you much joy and happiness

this holiday season! If the family gatherings aren’t in the cards or something you’re not looking forward to, there’s always the wind. There’s a lot to be said about a nice brisk Northern California winter ride. That’s my 2 cents. Merry Christmas! Al Cagle www.rackandpull.com

Mendocino Coast

RIDE DESTINATION:

I

mendocino - fort bragg

’m sure most of us over the years have heard the term “glamping,” (a blend of glamorous and camping.) I guess, technically, glamping is anytime you retain some of the comforts of home when camping. We never really paid much attention to its meaning, until we were looking for a place to camp in Mendocino. Looking over the possibilities, we came across a place called Mendocino Grove. It’s just a little south of the city where the Big River flows into the Pacific. Although they have open camping and Airstreams available, we chose to stay in one of their safari tents. Pretty fancy. Wood floors, plush queen beds, down comforters, wool blankets, lamps, the whole shot. Well, except for electricity, and private bathrooms. But they throw in lanterns that light your way up the hill to the bathrooms and showers. Both are very clean and well stocked, making your stay a little nicer. Add to that, a nice view through the trees to the ocean and

the sound of the waves to lull you to sleep at night. Canoe rentals are also available just a short walk down the road. After settling in, it was time for lunch. Anytime we are in the area we have to make a visit to Jenny’s Giant Burger in Ft. Bragg. This is where, years ago, a flock of gulls ate my lunch when I turned my back on them for like, two minutes. Still have to laugh. Since we were right there, we went on down to Glass Beach and hiked around for a while. We stopped off at the Glass Beach Museum. Definitely worth a quick visit. The owner is an eccentric old guy who’ll show you artifacts from the beach, give you some history and even sell you a gift or two. Back in Mendocino, the Flow Restaurant is a good place to eat and hang out. Great ocean views also. Since each camp has a firepit, that night we lit ours up and sat out under

the stars enjoying the cool ocean breeze. The next morning, we worked up an appetite as we walked the mile or so hiking trail that encircles the camp ground. A great forested journey that, at one point, comes out to a beautiful ocean overlook.

on by our camp and spent a couple of hours or so exploring the property. All kinds of variants of trees, flowers, plants, etc. to check out. Kind of relaxing. We also took the mostly flat hike out to the coast. A nice scenic stroll of about a mile and a half. They have a café on site, so after returning from the walk, we enjoyed some excellent clam chowder and a sandwich. But, if you’re up for a little longer walk, the Point Cabrillo Light Station is nearby. It’s a well-maintained lighthouse that was constructed in 1908 and the scenic trail out to the headland is certainly worthwhile.

After breakfast, it was off for a short day ride. If you go a little north on Hwy 1, you can catch the Comptche-Ukiah Road. Lots of twists and turns as you climb up into the treelined hills. At Comptche, it was a right on Flynn Creek Road and down to SR128, where we headed back to Hwy 1. This is a perfect “get out of the house for a while” ride. About an hour and a half, or two hours, depending on how hard you want to push it. Just about right.

Back at the camp, we kicked it for the afternoon. After some reading, we gathered up some kindling for the evening fire and watched the sun set and the stars come out. Our culinary treat for this trip was dinner at Café Beaujolais. Located near city center in Mendocino, it is a small house converted into a restaurant. Don’t be fooled by its humble appearance. The cuisine is definitely fine dining. Two thumbs up! So, if you ever consider ‘glamping on the coast’, you can’t go wrong at Mendocino Grove.

8TH ANNUAL

REFUGE RUN 2017

June 10 (Angels Camp): I was out dropping off some magazines at Knight Rides in Jackson when this big burley guy comes riding in to the shop to see if Russ could fix his starter problem. He noticed that TRM NorCal came in and told me about the run coming up this weekend and asked if I could come and check out the run. I asked him what the cost was and he told me it was by donation give what you can give and that they were going to be raffling off a Ducati 750 monster and all the proceeds go to the Refuge Church. Next year there going to raffle off a California Custom hundred 11-inch Harley-Davidson. The tickets will be $20 each and all proceeds help the church and the event. To purchase tickets for next year’s bike, give away go to their Face book page REFUGE run event page or the website www.refuge_run.com for more information. So, I called up some friends of mine to go for a ride to Angels Camp and meet at the church for the start of the run. About 75 riders gathered at the Refuge Church and we were given directions to White Pines Lake in Arnold. We road through Murphys up Hwy 4 passed Arnold to White Pines Lake. This is an annual run that is always held the 2nd weekend in June. The Refuge Church is on the Old Murphy Grade Road about a ½ mile on the right on your way to Murphys. They have a bounce house for the kids and for those young at heart. About 150-200 people show up for this run every year. They come from as far away as Canada and others from LA, Reno, High Desert, the valley and the Bay area. The group is like one big family of like-minded Christian motorcycle enthusiast. If you’re not a rider and want to attend the event they have areas for motorhomes and camping. They have music Fellowship and a pre-party to the Refuge Run. When we got to the lake the BBQ was going for lunch and later for dinner they had a whole pig with Hawaiian buns and coleslaw. Some of the riders and church members where setting up, cooking and had the areas marked off for all of us to park. It was a great time for all. If you’d like to attend next year check out their sites for information on a great ride. Article and photos contributed by Dan Griffin

7th Annual Jeff Keith’s Ride for Reason

October 13-14 (Orangevale): Jeff Keith, lead singer of the multi-platinum rock band Tesla, and Ryan Fleenor founder of Higher Purpose Event Foundation, kicked off this annual event that benefits foster children in the Northern California area with a pre-party at The Boardwalk in Orangevale. Playing for the pre-party guests was the Reno based Greg Golden Band. Greg’s band released their first album in March of 2014, and just this year, an EP produced by Frank Hannon’s (Tesla’s founding member and guitarist for Tesla) of Red Hawk Records. Nothing but the best for the 7th Annual Jeff Keith’s Ride For Reason. The following day, the bikers filled up Folsom’s Harley Davidson parking lot, and spilled out onto the street, all ready to show their support for a great cause.

Coffee, water and sweets were available for the riders. Jeff was there to sign autographs and take pictures with some of the riders. Leading the bikers was Ryan Fleenor founder of Higher Purpose Events, Jeff Keith of Tesla, Joe Maumee and Dog from 93.7 -The River radio station. Lunch was served at the Boardwalk for the hungry bikers, while another well-known southern rock band, Savannah Blue played for the crowd. After a few initial instructions from Mom, Jeff and Vera Keith’s 6-year-old son, Joe Bob performed a solo on the drums….an amazingly talented young man. His drum instructor is the Greg Golden Band’s drummer, Steve Brown. Steve was also the drummer for the late Ronnie Montrose.

INTERNATIONAL RIDE DESTINATION:

Southern Italy

continued from last month….

O

ur ride continued on hugging the endless scenic coastlines until the day began to wane and we reversed course at the city of Campomarino and turned inland up SP130 to Torricella onto SP 128 to Lizzano, riding through towns with roundabouts at most every major intersection (stop lights were few and far between in these small towns) and found ourselves skirting through low lying gentle flat lands of Italian vineyards with crops of Negroamaro grapes, best known for red wines in this region. The smells were distracting and intoxicating. Having returned back near Taranto, we headed North to the beautiful hill top town Centre of Martina Francaa village with baroque style buildings, churches and palaces dating back to the 14th century. This would

prove to be a memorable highlight of our MC tour.

Upon arriving, we were greeted to a spectacular medieval community trapped in time, where entering arched gates leads you into a village where you get a glimpse of narrow pathways running in all directions , sided with many shops of local wares, wine tasting and local trinket marketers featuring Ceramiche Baroque figures indicative of the area. The piazza also featured a stunning early 16th century church,St Martin’s Basilica. No motorized vehicles could be seen inside the walls, making for pleasant strolls through the village. On this Sunday evening, we learned the piazza and it’s confines are visited mainly by locals and was not considered a tourist hangout, which was evident by the lack of street hustlers found in the larger cities, such as Rome.

Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 16

Our final 2 days in Italy took us south of Taranto on road SS106radd to Corigliano Calabro along the Ionian Sea, again with striking views of the oceans set against Castles and centuries old communities hugging the “inside of the boot “coastline. One structure that caught our eye and beckoned us to stop and pose for pictures was “Castle Federiciano,” the 11th century castle now used as a Ristorante and hotel, located near the Villaggio Baia del Castello. After arriving in Calabro a little further up the road, Big Joe picked up his fiance Imma and we set course ascending the Sila Greca mountains to take on some very technical and memorable motorcycle riding of the trip. Climbing up road SS106 found us winding through a 16th century Castle - Castello Ducale di Corigliano Calabro, then passing through its narrow streets and archways that had you envisioning civilizations of the

past, perched up on the surrounding walls watching as we passed through. Exiting the city limits, we scaled up road SP187 for about 3.5 miles of what seemed like over a hundred + turns of switchbacks, right-left off camber twisty’s, that were meant for sport bikes, not heavy Harleys. This riding required total concentration just to not drop the bike on these blind uphill switchbacks, made ever more challenging as the wife squeezed my sides each time we rounded these thrill ride corners. I must say it was a challenge and an adventure to get through this stretch of road. It wasn’t until we pulled over near the top looking back, we found ourselves awe struck at the path just traversed, and couldn’t take our eyes off this wondrous view of the Early Modern era village below framed by the Ionian Sea. Continuing on to higher elevations, it seemed like the Italians had taken the day off so we could enjoy the

Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 17

mountain roads unencumbered. A welcoming feature of the Italian countryside were the scents of local Larch pine forests complemented by fresh spring wells dotting the roadsides for riders and motorists to refill their bottles with the cleanest and purest tasting water in Italy. Our destination for this ride found us arriving about 90 minutes later in the resort town of Camigliatello Silano, somewhat resembling the resort communities of the Tahoe area. This town catered to skiers in the winter and hikers and nature enthusiasts in the summer. The downtown featured fresh meat shops with smells and sites that delighted all of our senses and also featured a wonderful restaurant, Le Tre Lanterne. The antipasto, risotto and sausage, chased again by local red wines, were savory delights we would not forget…it was that good. To get to our destination quicker (which we later found out to be our starting point in Calabro hours earlier) Big Joe and Imma led us back down the mountain in the opposite direction we came calling it the “easy” route back traversing along roads EB46 to the town of Cosenza, then jumping on Autostrada A2 to head back to our starting point of Corriliago Calabro. Although easier, the ride was twice as long to get back from whence we started, but it took us to our final destination for the evening at the Hotel Poseidon, situated literally 50 yards from the Ionian Sea-sweet. To our surprise, we were greeted by old friends who had come to our US home in 2015-Vincenzo and Gianfranco, accompanied by Luisa “Lilu”, a motorcycle lady whom we had only known through social media. It really is a small world! We all spent the evening at a local pizzeria Spaccanapoli, enjoying the company and feasting on margherita pizzas and sipping limoncellos! What

a joyous and romantic way to cap our motorcycle riding that would ultimately finish at around 600 miles (948 km.) Beside all the obvious memorable moments, sites, people and camaraderie taken from our 4 days of riding, it would be an oversight not to review the fine art of Italian driving. You learn very quickly that it is acceptable to pass between the cars of oncoming traffic, because you will learn to trust that oncoming cars will scoot over to let you pass- whereas in America, not only will you be cited by local law enforcement but these same oncoming cars will not be as accepting to this style of driving. Also, we learned stop signs, as few as we encountered , were merely there as a suggestion if you felt like it, as it was expected that vehicles roll through if no other cars or bikes were present. Many of the roads in Italian rural cities were governed by speed boxes displaying a sign with an Italian Bobby cap symbol & camera, with a speed limit number posted beneath. Exceed that magic number and expect a $200.00+ euro ticket in the mail, of which we saw plenty of opportunities to get nabbed. Luckily our friend Big Joe knew the locations and kept us from being contributors to the Italian government coffers. The take way from riding cycles through these Renaissance lands of Italy left us in wonderment, knowing we were riding through civilizations before and after Christ, amongst architectural structures that have withstood the test of time and man. Our only regret, a wanting to ride longer and further, because the riding, history, scenic beauty, people and food never got old for us! Grazie and arrivederci Italy. BURIED BONES V -

Tombstone Tour Poker Run

October 29 (El Dorado Hills): The parking lot of the El Dorado Saloon was starting to fill up with motorcycles as eager riders were looking forward to this annual adventure. Bob Richards of 41Live! is the promoter of this ride that seems to just get bigger and better every year. When you show up for a Buried Bones run come expecting an adventure as each year the route is totally different as we wind our way through the foothills of Amador and El Dorado counties with poker stops at historic cemeteries. This year, the first stop after heading out from El Dorado Saloon was off of Hwy 49 at the St. Stephens Catholic Church Cemetery in Drytown. From there it was a scenic ride through some twisty country roads to the Old City Cemetery in Placerville. As folks continued north of Placerville on Hwy 49, it was an added bonus to enjoy a sunny and scenic fall day riding among the trees that were changing colors as we made our way to the last cemetery poker stop Pilot Hill Cemetery. It was about that time to roll back down Salmon Falls Road to the El Dorado Saloon to make the last poker draw of the day before getting our

hands on some good food and a cold beer. For the past 2 years, the new owners of the El Dorado Saloon have opened their arms to bikers and promoters of this event by providing a perfect venue for this run. They love to hear the motorcycles rolling into their large parking lot. You can’t miss their huge patio deck that is shaded by a large oak tree which makes for a perfect place to hang out with your friends after a long day of riding. Another bonus is they serve a great breakfast (and bloody marys too!) making it a great place in El Dorado Hills to meet up with your friends to start your ride as well. Promoters, Bob and Max Richards of 41Live! reach out to several businesses throughout the year to bring out the good raffle swag to the table for this event…and lots of it too! It seems like almost everyone walks away with something cool after this run. California is abundant with gold mining history and there are several historic cemeteries tucked away in the most unexpected places. The reality is that when it’s all said and done, the physical work is just beginning for Bob and Max as they donate their time and monies raised to help maintain the historic pioneer cemeteries that we visited during the poker run. It is good to know that the biker community is helping to preserve our California history by participating in the Buried Bones Tombstone Tour. If you missed out this year - just watch for this event in October 2018 - this is one poker run you do not want to miss! Article and photos by Stan and Terri Hill

SONOMA STRONG / CALISTOGA DAY RIDE Petrified Forest and Old Faithful Geyser of California … and back again

L

ate September, Terri and I jumped on the bike with the intention of writing up a day ride article to Calistoga for an upcoming issue. Unfortunately two weeks after we made this ride, the devastating Napa and Sonoma County fires swept through the area fanned on by high winds. We were not sure if any of the locations that we were planning on reporting about were affected by the fire or not. About a month later, we retraced our ride to the area to see for ourselves.

with 1,300 families in their subdivision - Coffey Park. We were accompanied by another Sonoma county friend, Michele who gave us an insider’s tour with her resident’s pass to the neighborhood. At that time, the subdivision had a controlled entry guarded by the National Guard in an attempt to keep looters out of Coffey Park. As bad as you might think it was from our photos – it was actually much worse seeing it with our own eyes.

Honestly, watching the fire news coverage did not adequately prepare us for what we saw. On our return trip, we also looked up our friends Will and Mary who just lost two homes and all of their belongings along

On a positive note, our destination locations from our first ride appeared to be ok. During our return trip to Calistoga and from our view of the Petrified Forest (www.petrifiedforest.org) parking lot - it looked as if the

Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 22

one mile loop might have burned. This is an easy hike among the petrified trees discovered from a volcanic eruption of Mount St. Helena during the Pliocene era. Centuries later, rain water helped the silica from the volcanic ash soak into the logs turning the fallen trees to stone. It is a very interesting place to check out if you get a chance; however they are temporarily closed so give them a call beforehand to make sure they are open. You can get there from Calistoga on the appropriately named Petrified Forest Highway. The other Calistoga destination for this ride was Old Faithful Geyser of California (www.oldfaithfulgeyser.com) it was fortunately spared from the fire but the surrounding mountains had been burnt. The Old Faithful Geyser of California is in an idyllic park-like setting with beautiful views all around. Come to find out it is one of only three geysers in the world to have the Old Faithful moniker, the others are, of course - the most famous geyser in Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming and another Old Faithful geyser is located in New Zealand. In order for a geyser to be considered as an ‘Old Faithful’ - they have to erupt on a regular basis all year round. Admission is $15 for adults – so we suggest you bring a picnic lunch, play bocce and hang out for a while. You will be able to see the geyser erupt a few times during your visit. We were fortunate to witness it erupt every 20 minutes or so. It all made more scenic as we took a 360 degree look around us seeing mountains on all sides, as you Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 23

could only imagine what this area looked like before the Mount St. Helena eruption which created what now is known as one of the best wine regions in the world. As we rolled through Calistoga, the downtown area looked just fine as did all of areas wineries; but there were outlying areas that still had controlled entry for residents only. We heard numerous harrowing stories of survival as people literally ran for their lives with nothing more than the clothing on their backs. We must acknowledge all of the first responders that jumped into action during the fires – because without them - there would have undoubtedly been even more lives and property lost. We heard stories of an off duty police officer that jumped in to action to keep cars moving through an intersection as he watched his own home burn down in front of him. And more stories of firefighters who knew their own houses were burning while they were fighting selflessly to save another’s

home. Our hearts go out to all who lost their homes and personal possessions that were in them. Their homes will be replaced over time; it’s the loss of family keepsakes and personal possessions that hits them the hardest. Rebuilding is unfortunately going to take a while, so if you know people that have been affected find the time to reach out to them and let them know that you care. The community itself is resilient and strong; but you want to find a way help – do it by planning a ride destination or attending an event in the area! It is visitors that will stimulate the local economy and help keep Sonoma Strong. Article and photos by Stan and Terri Hill Check out the ‘Sonoma Strong’ video on at

T

his is a new column that is dedicated to all the readers who want to paint their own bikes, need help with technical problems or stay updated on the custom paint industry. For the “DIY” group you do not need to be a Roth, Barris or Watson. All you need is a lot of patience, perseverance and a willingness to learn. There are, however, a few caveats. Your friends will suddenly become experts and offer you plenty of advice. The only advice is to do your own research. There are a lot of cool professionals who would be happy to answer your questions. You will also be told what colors everyone is using this year. You are not painting your bike for other people - you are painting it for yourself. This is not like on TV. It takes weeks or months to produce a custom paint job. All paints have an MSDS Sheet (Material Safety Data Sheet) and a Technical Data Sheet. For your safety and success make sure to read both! As with any other industry, technology and innovation seem to move faster than the speed of light. I will try to bring you some exciting new products. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. Contact me at john@ perfectpastcustommotorcycles.com. Paint on! :) Contributor Bio: In the early 70’s, John Bartevian completed his automotive paint apprenticeship. At the age of 20, he painted two bikes which won at the Sacramento Autorama. He has continued the tradition of winning for his clients and his own creations. Events included the Oakland Roadster Show, Hot August Nights, Fresno Invitational Autorama and many others. He was chosen as the west coast artist for the development of “Hot Hues”, a custom paint line for DuPont Corporation. Served as a contract artist/instructor for Iwata, The ArtStore, Finishmaster and many others. He currently runs Perfect Past Customs in Castro Valley with his partner - Ernie Avellar. He will be writing a new column for TRM NorCal readers. It will include question and answers, decoding technical information and information that affect the custom paint community.

his bike reminded me of what it was like back when I was a building contractor. You spend all your time working on homes for everyone else and never get around to your own projects. I envision that owning a motorcycle repair shop is a lot like that; you spend so much time fixing your customer’s bikes - that you have a hard time getting to your own ride. But one sure thing that will get us motivated would be our significant other. They have a way of prioritizing the projects that we have struggled to get to. This XL1200 was built for Dave’s wife Kim - so he knew he needed to build it to impress. When I first saw this bike, I could tell that the work on this RIDE PRIDE from HD Performance had been well thought out and completed with the care that you would expect. In the end this turned out to be a one of a kind Sportster that Kim will be proud to ride for years to come. Article and photos by Stan Hill

EVENT

26th Annual

8TH ANNUAL SAVE THE BIG TWINS RUN October 14 (Vacaville): On occasion when there are not enough contributors available and several events are scheduled on top of each other - Stan will go one way and I’ll go another. This time, I headed to long time advertiserIron Steed Harley for their annual Save The Big Twins Run during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Sadly attendance was down for this year as many folks had been affected by the Sonoma County fires just over the hill. It was gusty winds as a determined group of riders headed out towards their two stops at Green River Brewing and Plainfields Stations with the final destination and lunch in Capay at Road Trip Bar and Grill on Saturday. This event is a fundraiser for a local organization dedicated to those affected by breast cancer called Solano Midnight Sun Breast Cancer Foundation (www.midnightsolanosun. org). They go above and beyond to help by providing temporary financial assistance and resources to those who have experienced a financial hardship during cancer treatments and need help paying for basic living expenses. Not to mention providing mammogram sponsorships to under-insured women. On hand was the SMSF President and stage 4 breast cancer survivor - Pat Mendez who was very appreciative of all riders in attendance. The friendly staff at Iron Steed Harley-Davidson do a phenomenal job of welcoming new faces to the dealership as well as organizing fun-filled events for great causes. Put this one on your calendar for next year! Article and photos by Terri Hill Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 40

I

t’s the most wonderful time of the year, there will be much mistletoe-ing, and hearts will be glowing, when love ones are near - It’s the most wonderful time of the year! A traditional holiday song made popular by Andy Williams in 1963. It was a much simpler time back then, when family traditions seemed to be followed and old time Christmases were filled with family members young and old. We put up with grandpa snoring, enjoyed grandma’s fresh homemade pies, dad’s exaggerated stories, and driving our mother crazy running in and out of the house. Yes, it was the usual traditional family, organized chaos. Aunts and uncles, brothers and sisters, cousins, nieces and nephews; all together to celebrate one of the happiest times of the year. Well times have changed, and it seems that the holiday season has turned into the loneliest season of the year. It seems there is more emphasis on sales, electronics, dinners out and being alone during the holidays. People are short with each other, there is more road rage, and the malls are packed with rude patrons and workers who seem to be unfulfilled, overworked and understaffed. We seem to have created a season of chaos, and like the boiling frog syndrome, what started off slowly changing, seems to have become the norm. The stats don’t lie and the ones that are hit the hardest are our seniors. It is heartbreaking to realize that 43% of seniors report feeling lonely throughout the year and I am sure that number doubles during the holiday season. The elderly are left in care facilities, sometimes for their own well-being, staring out the windows, waiting for anyone to come by and greet them. They pray for loved ones, but would accept anyone to come by and lend an ear or a gesture of care. Isolated elders increase their risk of death by 45%, and 59% are more susceptible to having a

faster mental and physical decline as claimed by a UCSF study. The study also found that two-thirds of older adults who said they were lonely said they were married or living with a partner. This article is not intended to be a bummer about the holidays, but a call-to-action to reach out to our seniors and our elderly parents and friends. It doesn’t take much to make an old man laugh or an old lady smile. It is called, Love with Intention. Make it a point to be intentional this holiday season and remember our seniors. Grab a few friends, fire up the hogs and ride over to a senior care facility. Bring some candy and just show you care. Ask an old codger to tell you a story about their favorite Christmas. Ask the old ladies to share their favorite family holiday story. Stay and watch a holiday movie with them, bring them cookies, take them outside, and have them take pictures on your bikes. The list is endless with the things you can do, but the memories and hearts you will be reaching are priceless. It doesn’t take much to make these folks smile. So many have been abandoned by their families and wait patiently day after day for someone to just come by and say, “Hi”. Depression is at an all-time high and loneliness seems to be their everyday norm. Let’s make this holiday season “the most wonderful time of the year” for our seniors and our aging loved ones. What do you get someone who you think has everything? Time and Love. See you at Thunder Road this holiday season. MERRY CHRISTMAS Mathew 4:7-8 Blessed are the merciful for they shall obtain mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart for they see God. (NKJV) “Never Ride Alone” Pastor Johnny Lujan

BIKER BAND REVUE:

Zepparella’s Angeline Saris

A

s a woman in the business, there can be emphasis on anything other than what they are playing. All it takes to blow that theory out of the water is to catch a show where bass player, Angeline Saris is playing. I caught up with Angeline in Boston via Skype. Angeline is the bassist for the all-girl Led Zeppelin cover band, Zepperalla (www.zepparella.com) She had just arrived in Boston for a tour and was waiting for the rest of the Zepperalla ladies to get there. Curled up in a chair with a cup of tea she graciously gave me a remarkable interview.

Zepparella

Angeline has been playing bass since high school, when her freshman year music teacher asked her if she would like to play bass in the jazz band the following year. YEAH! Was her response! She thought that would be pretty cool because the band got to travel a lot, and the idea of playing an amplified string instrument sounded really cool. She practiced all year, and became a member in the jazz band. Angelina has been playing bass every since…and quite well, I might add. Angeline was at a pivotal point in her career and was thinking about moving to LA to get better gigs. She was looking at women in her community that seemed to be doing really well, when she saw an ad for D’Addario Strings. Gretchen Menn (guitar for Zepparella) was pictured in the ad. Gretchen looked badass dressed in black leather and windblown hair. She sent Gretchen a message complimenting her on the image. Gretchen in turn responded with a favorable comment. They ended up having lunch together, hitting it off from the start. A couple weeks later Gretchen called Angeline. Their bass player was leaving and would she like to audition for the position. Angelina had mixed feelings about joining an all female cover band. Besides that, she was planning on relocating from her home in the Bay Area to LA. Thank you, but not at this time, was her response. Around the same time, Angeline had been cleaning out her wardrobe and recalls throwing a white pair of jeans into the Goodwill bag. A few days later she had a vivid dream that she took the white jeans out of the bag. (Zepperalla’s band members wear white when performing). Not long after, Angeline was on stage playing a gig, when she got a text from Gretchen, asking her if she was sure she didn’t want to play with Zepparella. Remembering the dream, this time Angeline responded favorably…and the rest is history. Narada Michael Walden (Multi-Platinum Grammy and Emmy winning Producer, Musician and Recording Artist. He’s produced and/or (co) written number one hits by Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey (“Vision of Love”), Aretha Franklin (“Freeway of Love”), and Lisa Fischer (“How Can I Ease the Pain”). Narada wanted to start his own band after he came off tour with Jeff Beck. Angeline auditioned and got the bassist position for the newly formed Narada Michael Walden Band. Their first tour was Japan. She had been playing with the Narada Michael Walden Band for about a

Angeline Saris year, when Narada called Angeline and asked what she was doing that day? Angeline laughed and shared that “Narada has always been one of my heroes, and deserved the upmost respect.” He said to come on down to the studio, I want

you to meet Carlos…as in Carlos Santana! She jumped into the shower and as she began washing her hair she thought…’well shoot, there is no amount of practice I can do in the next half hour that is going to make me any better…this is it! You either got it or you don’t, this is the day you are meeting Carlos Santana’. She was at Tarpan Studio in San Rafael, when Carlos Santana walked in. He was very respectful when he greeted Angeline with a smile and a hello. They listened to some music that Carlos was into, a sort of Turkish Hungarian fusion music. As she listened to the music, she was also mapping it out in her head. Angeline jammed with Carlos Santana after only hearing it one time. Shortly after, it was announced that the legend Carlos Santana would be a special guest appearing with the Narada Michael Walden Band at George’s Nightclub in San Rafael! Angeline’s journey has been anything but boring. She has appeared on the cover of Bass Quarterly magazine, shared the cover along with an interview of the August 2014 issue of Bass Musician Magazine, she has toured with the legend Ernest Rangoon. As a member of the Narada Michael Walden Band, she was on stage for the 2014 Annual Christmas Show that held a special concert starring Dionne Warwick and Cheyenne Eliot. Also in 2014 Angeline released her first single and music video Black Strap Molasses. In 2015 she flew to Germany to attend the Warwick Bass Camp as a student. The weeklong camp boasts some of the best teachers, clinics and opportunities for connecting and learning. The following year she returned as a teacher. In 2016, Angeline joined forces with drummer Lex Razon. After releasing their debut single Space Train, the two decided to record a full-length album called Angelex. Check out their YOUTUBE video at www.angelinesaris. com They received the masters about 3 weeks prior to this interview. Currently they are working on the artwork, and all the other not-fun stuff it takes to produce an album. Angeline’s last statement for this interview was that she never takes for granted Angeline’s mom on whom she has been motorcycle honored to play with.

A 72 year old guy takes this beautiful 24 year old young woman out to Christmas Eve dinner. They had a great time at dinner and are walking through the mall and he spots a jewelry store and they walk inside. He tells the Rep working there that this is one very special lady and he would like to buy her a very special ring. So the Rep shows him a very nice ring that cost $5,000. The older guy said no she is very, very special and needs a very, very special ring. So the Rep goes to another case and he pulls out a ring and said “I have this ring but it cost $40,000”. The older guy says “let’s see it”. The young ladies eyes light up when she puts it on her hand and she is smiling ear to ear. The older guy says “that is perfect we’ll take it”. He explained he only had a check and that it was 8pm so Rep couldn’t call the bank to verify the funds. “Can you take my check and hold the ring until Monday? Once the bank opens you cash the check and then call us and we will come pick up the ring”. The Rep says “great I will hold it until Monday”. Well Monday morning the Rep calls the bank only to find out the old guy doesn’t have enough to cash a $400. check let alone a $40,000. one. So the jeweler calls the old guy yelling to him but about the check. The old guy just said, “hold on, let me tell you about my wet n’ wild weekend”!!!. -------------------------------------------------------------A Police Officer pulls over a speeding car on Christmas Eve. The officer says, “I clocked you at 80 miles per hour, sir.” The driver says, “Goodness, officer, I had it on cruise control at 60; perhaps your radar gun needs calibrating.” Not looking up from her knitting the wife says: ‘Now don’t be silly, dear, you know that this car doesn’t have cruise control”. As the officer writes out the ticket, the driver looks over at his wife and growls, “Can’t you please keep your mouth shut for once?” The wife smiles demurely and says, “Well dear you should be thankful your radar detector went off when it did or your speed would have been higher.” As the officer makes out the second ticket for the illegal radar detector unit, the man glowers at his wife and says through clenched teeth, “Woman, can’t you keep your mouth shut, ever”? The officer frowns and says, ‘And I notice that you’re not wearing your seat belt, sir. That’s an automatic $75 fine”. The driver says, ‘Yeah, well, you see, officer, I had it on, but I took it off when you pulled me over so that I could get my license out of my back pocket”.

The wife says, “Now, dear, you know very well that you didn’t have your seat belt on. You never wear your seat belt when you’re driving.” And as the police officer is writing out the third ticket, the driver turns to his wife and barks, “Will you just shut the hell up?” The officer looks over at the woman and asks, “Does your husband always talk to you this way, Ma’am?” The wife looks at the officer with eyes round and innocent and replies; “Only when he’s been drinking way too much.” -------------------------------------------------------------On the farm lived a chicken and a horse, both of whom loved to play together. One day the two were playing when the horse fell into a bog and began to sink. Scared for his life, the horse whinnied for the chicken to go get the farmer for help! Off the chicken ran, back to the farm. Arriving at the farm, he searched and searched for the farmer, but to no avail, for the farmer had gone to town with the only tractor. Running around, the chicken spied the farmer’s new Harley. Finding the keys in the ignition, the chicken sped off with a length of rope hoping he still had time to save his friend’s life. After tying the other end to the rear bumper of the farmer’s bike, the chicken then drove slowly forward and, with the aid of the powerful bike, rescued the horse! Happy and proud, the chicken rode the Harley back to the farmhouse, and the farmer was none the wiser when he returned. The friendship between the two animals was cemented: Best Buddies, Best Pals. A few weeks later, the chicken fell into a mud pit, and soon, he too, began to sink and cried out to the horse to save his life! The horse thought a moment, walked over, and straddled the large puddle. Looking underneath, he told the chicken to grab his hangy-down thingy and he would then lift him out of the pit. The chicken got a good grip, and the horse pulled him up and out, saving his life. The moral of the story? (yep, you betcha’, there is a moral!) “When You’re Hung Like A Horse, You Don’t Need A Harley To Pick Up Chicks”. --------------------------------------------------------------Lil’ Johnny was really antsy and wanting to leave for Christmas break. The Teacher was asking questions and all who answered correctly were allowed to leave early. The room was emptying quickly and Lil’ Johnny was getting really antsy and really mad. The teacher asked another question and little Amy, Marie and Sally all raised their hands and knew the answer. The Teacher let them all go early. Little Johnny was truly pissed off. He mumbled “damn, I wish these bitches would keep their mouths shut”. The teacher whirled around and said, “Who said that?” Lil’ Johnny yelled out “Harvey Weinstein”, and flew out the door.
