editor’s letter HAPPY NEW YEAR!! Now that 2016 is in our review mirror, Terry and I will be heading into 2017 with tons of optimism and excitement for what may be ahead of us. We are constantly trying to improve and keep the content fresh! Stay tuned for some new and fun features to come this year. Many of you have provided us with feedback about the ride destination articles so look for even more articles about one day ride routes that we and other Thunder Roads NorCal contributors will be sharing in conjunction with the weekend adventures of Chuck and Cindy. We will be starting from all over the north state to showcase some of the coolest one day rides. If you know of a cool route - please feel free to share your favorite one day ride where you live - so we can share it! This is the most fun you can have on a motorcycle, riding to see new places and meet new people that also love to ride, even better if you get to share it with a few of your friends. This is just one example of the new ideas that we are planning on implementing for 2017 - so stay tuned you are sure to find some features that will defiantly interest you. As hard as we try, Terry and I cannot possibly be everywhere although it sure feels like we are trying to! If you love to go out for an adventure on your bike and also take pictures to document the adventure, then why not become a magazine contributor? We are always looking for new ideas and perspectives - it’s fun and not as difficult as you might think! Give us a call and we can help you get started. After all, this magazine is all about our local riding community and we’d be happy to share your two wheel adventures too. On that note, none of this would be possible though without the fantastic support of our business sponsors that not only support this magazine but also all of us that love to ride. So please make sure to take notice of all the great businesses that advertise in the magazine and reciprocate with your support for these businesses that collaborate with us! And if you happen to own a business or know of one that would benefit from getting its name out to our readers, please let us know so we can include them in our Thunder Roads NorCal family. It is thanks to these businesses that we are able to produce this publication and it’s also how we are able to provide it to you for free. We also want to mention that the Easyriders Show is a one day show this year (Saturday- January 14) - so be sure to come on by our booth for a photo op with several of the TRM NorCal models – and come say hi to Terry and me! We enjoy meeting as many of you in person as we can and that is a great opportunity to do just that! Happy New Year!! Stan & Terry Hill Owners/Editors

LIVE FREE: CALIFORNIA MOTORCYCLE CULTURE EXHIBIT

T

he “Live Free: California Motorcycle Culture” is now on display at the California Automobile Museum at 2200 Front Street in Sacramento (www.calautomuseum. org) until mid-Feb 2017. Motorcycles are admired by Californians from all different walks of life because they are powerful, fast, stylish, and run on only two wheels. In this exhibit, you will find the motorcycle that fits your lifestyle from Harley-Davidson to Honda. The Live Free exhibit features a wide variety of motorcycles: A few highlights of the 60 motorcycles in “Live Free” include a 1912 Excelsior, 1939 Indian Scout, 1951 Mustang Pony, 1953 Cushman Scooter, 1956 JAP Speedway Racer, 1964 Honda Dream, 1974 Harley-Davidson Chopper, and a 2016 Zero Electric. Closely intertwined, the history of the automobile and motorcycle has changed over the years and the motorcycle will be getting all the glory it deserves in this exciting new exhibit! Motorcycles like the transverse 350cc V-Twin engine of the 1955 Victoria Bergmeister V-35 has a style all its own. Beginning as a bicycle maker, Victoria built motorcycles from 1901 until 1966. Known for high quality and engine torque, the Victoria was often used with sidecars. The Bergmeister (meaning ‘Mountain Master’ in German) was known for good breaks and handling. Also featured is a 1936 Salsbury Scooter with an enclosed drive-train underneath the seat, a later development is the first Continuous Variable Transmission (CVT) this being used on a scooter made this product such a success that they even tried to license the design internationally. The design defined the second generation of scooters worldwide and inspired competition from Cushman and even Harley-Davidson. The Flying Merkel was a motorcycle of the American company Merkel in Milwaukee, which relocated later to Middletown, Ohio. The motorcycle was produced from 1911 until 1915. The founder of the company, Joe Merkel, began designing engines for motorcycles in 1902, and started building his own motorcycles in 1903, including a one-cylinder engine with a capacity of 316 cc, which was also used in the contemporary Indian. Indian is an American brand of motorcycles originally produced from 1901 to 1953 in Springfield, Massachusetts. Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 6

Hendee Manufacturing Company initially produced the motorcycles, but the name was changed to the Indian Motorcycle Manufacturing Company in 1928. In 1905, Indian built its first V-twin factory racer, and in following years made a strong showing in racing and record-breaking. In California, motorcycles were particularly popular and with their own special sub-culture within the state. From good weather to electric vehicles, from outlaw to Hollywood, from the deserts to the coasts, motorcycles will always have a special place in California’s vehicular history. Motorcycles are in my blood, I have been riding here in California since I was 12 years old. My family members all rode bikes ever since I could remember. Riding Honda and Yamaha dirt bikes until we were old enough for the street. When Triumph and BSAs 500 and 650s filled the bill. (I didn’t even own a car for more than 10 years) The 1966 Harley-Davidson Race Bike Hauler I currently ride has been in my garage since 1974. I always feel so honored when they want one of our vehicles for the museum, however this was a little bittersweet. We decided to loan the museum our 1954 Cushman Truckster, after a year of rebuilding and working on it (we fired the new motor just last week), I was looking forward to terrorizing the neighborhood. The Cushman Motor Works founded in 1901 as a manufacturer of small internal-combustion engines for farm equipment and boats, added motor scooters to its product line in 1936. The museum currently has a collection of over 150 classic cars, race cars, muscle cars, and early models displayed throughout its 72,000 square feet. Most on display are on loan from private exhibitors and represents a large spectrum of cars driven in California over the last 120 years. Only 25 percent of the vehicles are owned by the California Vehicle Foundation. The mission of the California Automobile Museum is to preserve, exhibit, and teach the story of the automobile and its influence on our lives. Sponsored by Elk Grove Power Sports and Thunder Roads Magazine in Northern California - don’t miss the “Live Free: California Motorcycle Culture” located at 2200 Front Street in Sacramento. 5 SPEED TRANSMISSION REBUILD

T

his month’s topic was based on a 1992 FXSTS that came into the shop with gear engagement issues in first, second, and third gears. In any of those first three gears, the bike would jump in and out of gear under acceleration. Before hastily ripping things apart we’ll start at the top and work inward. Unlike other models, the Softail has an oil tank that sits right on top of the transmission top cover and starter motor. Getting to either one of those requires the removal of the oil tank. Fun. Once the oil tank is out of the way we can access the top cover. Open this up and take a look inside. We don’t expect to see anything unusual at this point as the symptoms point to worn shifter dogs. Remove the shifter drum assembly and give it a close inspection. Look for burs in the fork guides. Next remove the clutch actuating cover. This will most likely require the removal of the rear exhaust pipe. Slide the shifter fork shaft out of the right side and pull the forks out. Check them for wear and straightness. With all of the flora and fauna out of the way you can take a limited peek at the gear set and see what you can see. We found some banged up shifting dogs right away. The shifting dogs are the integral part of the gear that provide the locking function of the gears.

This is our green light to remove all required primary side components to extract our faulty gear set. This includes the entire primary system and the inner chain case. Loosen the belt and remove the front pulley. The main shaft bearing race will have to be removed using the appropriate JIMS tool. Slide the gear set out of the right side of the case. It will probably need a bit of encouragement. There are pry points on both sides of the trap door (bearing housing). Once the gear set

was out we could see worn dogs on the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gear sets. Disassemble using service manual procedures. To make things easier during assembly, lay out the components in order. Always replace your gears in sets. If 1st gear main shaft is being replaced, replace 1st gear counter shaft as well. Gears develop a wear pattern and meshing new and old will almost always result in some unwanted noise. We used the venerable Andrews gears for this project. They are precision machined for smooth shifting. Here is a counter shaft first gear comparison. The left one is stock, the one on the right is the Andrews replacement. You can see the transition ramps machined into the female shifting dogs. The result is a buttery smooth shift into first gear. We also like to upgrade the shifter pawl assembly on pre2000 vehicles. The Achilles’ heel of these earlier assemblies is the return spring. These have been known to break. To replace this assembly the entire gear set must be removed. It’s a lot of labor for a relatively low cost component. On the left is the stock unit, on the right is Baker’s improved version. There is no benchmark mileage for replacing bearings. If the bike is a higher mileage vehicle, they should definitely be replaced. Lower mileage vehicles are a judgment call. It’s cheap insurance! Also, the main drive gear spacer can develop grooves over time. Unless it’s nice and smooth, replace it. As always, assemble in the reverse order! A BIKE BETWEEN FRIENDS E

very so often a bike will come along with a story that will touch even the hardest biker heart. When Syndicate Cycles in San Mateo introduced us to this sweet little FXR - I knew nothing about it other than it looked like the perfect ride for running the Bay Area streets with it’s no nonsense aggressive appearance. It just looks like it’s ready to shred, splitting lanes everywhere it goes. TRM NorCal later learned that this bike was bequeathed to its current owner Chuck Rundle from his close friend Stuie. As the beneficiary and for obvious reason, this bike is cherished by Chuck as a priceless testament of their friendship and he makes sure that this bike stays meticulously maintained with the help of the very qualified hands at Syndicate Cycles. Sedona Mountains

RIDE DESTINATION

ARIZONA’S CAMP VERDE – JEROME SEDONA - METEOR CRATER

W

ow! Does time ever fly!?! We can’t believe we’re on our way to Phoenix again for the annual baseball tournament. As usual, we went down with my son and his family. We played for separate teams one week and together in another. Made the playoffs again this year, but no trophies. So, after throwing it around in the hot, muggy weather (so much for that dry heat thing in Arizona), we decided to get out of town for a few days. The high desert to the north would be much cooler. We jumped on the Black Canyon Freeway (I17) and made our way up to Camp Verde. The goal for today would be Jerome, AZ, but we wanted to check out the Montezuma Castle National Monument. This large “pueblo” or cliff-dwelling was built around 1200 AD by the Southern Sinaqua. It is a 20 room, 5 story structure built into a cliff alcove. It’s 100 feet above the valley floor. The ceilings are supported by large sycamore beams, cross sectioned with branches, twigs and various grasses. The floors consist mostly of several inches of hard dried mud. The Sinaqua were mostly an agricultural people, although hunting was also a big part of their daily routine. They seemed to have disappeared from the region around 1450 AD. The most likely cause was the Apaches who moved into the Southwest around that period and in turn drove them out. The name came about when settlers from the east arrived in the 1800’s and wrongly thought that the people who built this structure were Aztecs. We weren’t able to make it this time around, but we also want to go and see the ruins at Tuzigoot. This is a large 110 room

Montezuma Castle pueblo that overlooks the Verde River. It is constructed of lime and sandstone. While not built into a cliff wall, we’ve heard it’s still pretty impressive! Back on the road we rode on up SR26 and on into Jerome. This quaint little place is an historic copper mining town built on the side of Mingus Mountain and overlooks the expansive Verde Valley. The first claims were staked in 1876 and by 1929, more copper was coming out of Arizona than any other state. Then the price of copper fell and so did the mining operations. Today, it’s kind of an artsy place with some unique shops, a brewery, and of course the “haunted” Grand Hotel. Nobody can really tell you why it’s haunted. As far as anybody knows, no ax murders or any other horrible event took place there. Maybe the ghosts just liked the view and decided to move in.

Bell Rock

View From Grand Hotel

Off Patio At Penrose Inn

The next day we left our nice third floor flat and rode on down to Sedona. We’d spend the next two days at the Penrose Inn. Great place situated in a red rock valley next to the Bell Rock. Can’t beat the surrounding scenery. After checking in we decided to ride out to Meteor Crater east of Flagstaff. To get there we had the pleasure of riding up SR89A north of Sedona. This is one of the nicest rides around. The route follows a tree-lined rock canyon and runs

If you think Arizona is nothing but a desert, you’d be wrong. There are many, many beautiful places beside Dry Creek.

to check out. This area is one of them.

So, when SR89A came upon I40, we headed east on that freeway. In about 30 miles or so you’ll take the cut-off to the Meteor Crater. Talk about an impressive sight! Once we made our way inside and looked over the rim, we couldn’t help but be amazed! The first thought in my mind was if something like this hit a major city now days, it would be a total catastrophe. The crater is a mile wide and 550 feet deep (60 stories). They guess it hit our planet about 50,000 years ago. The impact speed was probably around 26,000 mph and at a force of twenty million tons of TNT. Incredible! This impact area is the best preserved and was the first proven meteorite site on earth. There is a museum, restaurants and even a full RV park on site. Definitely worth a visit. Time to head back to Sedona, so we retraced our route. While traveling on I40, there was a huge grass fire to the south and when we reached SR89A, the canyon was full of smoke. Not choking smoke, but enough to give us a different perspective on the way back. Arriving at the Penrose, we were ready for dinner and someone recommended the Cucina Rustica. If you like Italian food and are in town, don’t miss this place. So we hung out another day and then this year’s Arizona adventure came to an end. J

ohn Shipman has long inspired us with his creativity and tastefully customized FXR’S, you may recall last summer we featured his all red and chrome FXR - so we wanted to make it a matching set and give you all a good look at this one that he also built. If you have been to any local bike shows that have a category for FXR’S – then you might have seen this bike turning heads of onlookers and judges alike. Both of John’s bikes have earned more than a few trophies along the way. It would also be a mistake to think that this is just another ‘off limits’ show bike as we have often seen John rolling up to events on this bike or his red one. And ya know…I wish I could feel bad for his quandary as it must be really ‘tough to decide’ which bike he should take for a spin on any given day. Article and photos by Stan Hill / Model: Brittany

By the time America reached the decade of the World Wide Web, we had seen the rise of Hip-Hop and the thawing of the Cold War. We would also have the misfortune of witnessing firsthand an increase in terroristic acts in our nation, with the World Trade Center and Oklahoma City bombings…not that I’m an expert on the subject, but maybe if our Fearless leader at the time would have been a tad more focused on his job duties and a little less enamored with a young intern named Lewinsky things could have evolved a little differently. Anyway, cigars and mass murderers aside, the motorcycle continued to forge ahead. As I mentioned before, during the 1990’s we saw the motorcycle industry turn its focus towards improving upon the two-wheeled beauties that we had grown to love so much. And these improvements helped to further entrench the motorcycle and the lifestyle surrounding it into mainstream America. The Japanese manufacturers were able to grow by leaps and bounds during the 90’s due in part to the growing interest in the racing scene. Honda continued to enchant riders both in search of technologically advanced bikes, as well as riders who just HAD to go fast. In 1990 Honda released the VFR750R (aka RC30) in America. This was a genuine race bike for the street, and sold at a staggering price that was twice the cost of a stock Interceptor. In 1992, 200 units of the legendary NR were produced for sale in the U.S. This was a totally street legal version of the ill-fated NR500 Grand Prix Racer, which sold for a whopping $60,000. No, that’s not a typo….it was seriously 60 grand…at that’s 90’s bread, not today’s low-carb version of the dollar. The NR was loaded, and way beyond its time. It featured carbon fiber body work, a digital dash, under seat exhaust, and fuel injection. In spite of its sumptuous use of carbon and light alloy, it weighed in at nearly 500 pounds. 1993 was another lucrative year for Honda with the release of the CBR900RR (Fireblade). This model combined the power of an open class motorcycle with the weight and handling of a 600, and proceeded to stun the sport bike world. Finally, Honda introduced the radical EXP-2 in 1995. This bike

was a two-stroke 400 cc model that became “proof-ofconcept” for company that a cleaner burning and more powerful two-stroke engine was attainable. Yamaha didn’t slow down during the 90’s either. 1991 brought about the release of the FJ1200A, it came standard with anti-lock brakes, and it set the standard for sports-touring bikes during the decade. In 1993, Yamaha introduced us to the striking GTS100…this machine featured electronic fuel injection and hub centered steering, but consumers scoffed about the price and failed to bite on the bikes innovation. 1996 was a stellar year for the company when they released the original Star model, sporting a 1300 cc engine it was named the V-4 Royal Star. In the final 2 years of the decade Yamaha graced the American public with the YZ400F (It became the first mass produced 4 stroke motocross bike, and was to become the eventual downfall of the two-stroke 250’s.), the YZF-R1, and the YZF-R6. Motocross style bikes were becoming more main-stream by the minute at this point in history. Suzuki was not to be outdone by its Japanese competitors, and also produced progenies faster than Octomom. 1990 brought us the 779 cc DR-BIG which amounted to the largest single cylinder engine in living memory. Followed by the GSX-R750 in ’91 which switched from oil cooling to water cooling and packed on a few pounds. 1995 was a better year for the company, when the beloved Bandit 1200…a 16 valve 1156 cc oil/water cooled model appeared on the motorcycle scene. But Suzuki didn’t stop there, in 1996 they released the all new GSX-R750 which was coined the “turning point model” thanks to its twin – spar frame instead of the older double cradle frame. The engine was also redesigned and featured 3 piece crank cases, chrome plated cylinders, and a side-mount cam chain, as well as the Suzuki Ram Air Direct (SRAD) system. The company’s first sport bike with a V-twin engine came in the form of the TL1000S in 1997, followed by the legendary SV650 “Hayabusa” in 1999. The Hayabusa sported an aluminum frame and a liquid cooled 90 degree V-twin DOHC 4 valve engine. Suzuki called this bike the “ultimate aerodynamic sport bike”…and

they were right, as it soon became the favorite of land speed racers. So it’s pretty clear that the Japanese were hard at work during the 90’s, but what were our local boys up to at the time? While I have to admit, there was plenty to focus on at the time....Y2K was creeping in on us, and the Spice Girls were incessantly asking everyone to tell them “what you really really want”, but despite the staggering amount of diversions, Harley-Davidson managed to focus on the tasks at hand and had themselves one hell of a decade as well. To kick off the ‘90’s Harley introduced us to the FLSTF Fat Boy….as we all know; this bike almost instantly became a modern legend of motorcycle design. 1991 brought us the “Dyna” line of bikes, starting with the FXDB Dyna Glide Sturgis. It wasn’t until 1994 that Harley-Davidson would enter the world of Super bike racing, but it did so elegantly with the release of the VR1000 and its powerful dual overhead cam and liquid cooled engine. The same year brought us the classically styled FLHR Road King to the growing family of touring bikes Harley already had to offer. 1995 was yet another year for firsts in the H-D family, with the addition of the Ultra Classic Electra Glide. This bike would become the first in Harley history to be a production bike with sequential port electronic fuel injection. The next three years Harley-Davidson would spend expanding its ever evolving corporation by opening new factories in Milwaukee, Menomonee Falls, Kansas City, and even Mahaus, Brazil…which just happened to

be the first operations to ever take place outside of the U.S. for the Harley-Davidson Motor Company. Harley rounded out the decade by sprucing up the “Dyna” and “Touring” motorcycle families by upgrading them to include the new twin cam 88 engines. Seems pretty cut and dry…except for a long lost friend in the industry…or maybe that’s long lost foe, seems to be attempting a bit of a comeback towards the close of the era. 1998 brings about the revival of brand exclusive production for a former competitor in the American motorcycle market. A merger of 9 companies ultimately formed the Indian Motorcycle Company of America (IMCA), and they opened a production facility in Gilroy, California starting with production of Scout, Chief, and Spirit models powered by engines acquired from S & S Cycle Inc. So where does this leave us now? Well to be honest it leaves me pretty exhausted. Between crossing my fingers that my student loans were going to disappear in a world-wide computer crash and wondering why anyone would voluntarily put a cigar…never mind, I digress. The ‘90’s brought us a lot of bigger, faster, and more loved two-wheeled beauties than one could have imagined possible. Next time we will conclude the series on motorcycle history by looking at today, tomorrow, and just how far we have come since Roper’s crazy bicycle. Getaway to Featherbed Railroad B&B Resort Our bikes were packed up and ready to roll for a weekend getaway on November 11-13. We love sharing with you some of the really cool places that we have found in our travels whenever we get a chance. We are planning more trips soon so stay tuned, we will put the invite out for you to join us to one of these locations! This fall, we organized a ride with a small group to the small town of Nice (Hwy 20) for a weekend stay at the Featherbed Railroad Bed & Breakfast Resort (www.featherbedrailroad.com) located next to Clear Lake - the largest natural freshwater lake in California. What makes this place unique is that the park-like resort provides lodging in vintage train cabooses that are tastefully remodeled. There are nine cabooses – each one with a special theme and matching interior décor to choose from.

Owner Paul and June with Jake

Obviously, the ‘Easy Rider’ caboose is the most requested by us leather clad motorcycle types, but there are eight more imaginative themes to experience! Another bonus as a bed and breakfast

resort is having breakfast prepared and served to caboose guests in the main dining area. New owners, June and Paul showcased their passion for cooking and entertaining to our group. It was delicious and filling! This is a relaxing and quiet resort with all of the cabooses under the shade of mature oak trees and a big green lawn – a perfect place to mingle with other travelers or in our case to congregate for a day ride with the TRM NorCal readers that joined

us on this getaway. The resort also has a private pier for guests to catch a spectacular sunset or a full moon ascending. I am pretty sure it might be a great place to cast a line if you’re into a bit of fishing. This adventure started on a Friday as we rolled out to meet up with Thunder Roads contributors Chuck and Cindy Loseth. From Sacramento, we throttled up Interstate 5 to Williams to one of our favorite road stops – Granzellas (www.granzellas.com) It’s here that we met up with several others that were coming in from different directions before heading west on Hwy 20. Of course when you make a stop at Granzellas, you have to grab a meal and do a bit of shopping before hitting the road and since we were under no time constraints we took our time and relaxed in their huge restaurant bar for awhile. As we travelled towards Lake County, our group wanted to pull over at the newly opened Cache Creek Vineyards (www.cachecreekvineyards.com). We have rolled right by it numerous times and always thought one of these days we need to check it out - glad we did! Very cool place inside and out and although I did not do any tasting this time

- I have heard that the wine is quite good. From there Winery entrance it was over the hill into Clearlake Oaks where we took another detour on a scenic ride up to the top of the mountains above the lake to Brassfield Estate Winery (www. brassfieldestate.com). This winery had a spectacular setting with a row of trees lining the long driveway entrance and beautiful manicured grounds all around. I did get a taste of their port. Wow! I am by no means a wine expert - but it was outstanding! The sun was starting to set so we beat feet to our weekend destination where we met up with more friends coming in from Fremont and Shelter Cove for a BBQ dinner.

On Saturday afternoon, we decided to take advantage of the perfect fall riding weather for a day ride around Clear Lake. We rode through several towns that were devastated by the recent wildfires. The surrounding devastation among the various stages of homeowners rebuilding was a painful yet a hopeful sight; however, you’d almost have to see it with your own eyes to get a full picture of what it must have been like to be in the midst of it. We stopped in at the local breweries in Middletown and Kelseyville for a taste of what was on tap and stopping for lunch at a great Mexican restaurant in Lakeport. Honestly, it felt good to spend a few bucks this weekend in the area because I am certain that this resort community could use all of the revenue that that they can get. Later that evening back at Featherbed Railroad, we gathered around the fire pit playing dice games, having a few cocktails and a smoke, making memories. It was hard to leave but I am sure we will be back again soon as Featherbed Railroad B&B Resort gets a ‘thumbs up’ from Thunder Roads Magazine NorCal. There is an old Chinese proverb to remember especially if you and your friends are looking for new ride destination getaway… “To know the road ahead – ask those coming back”. August 27 (Newark): Hell ya it was worth getting my old ass up for a breakfast of hot biscuits n gravy, crispy bacon (Nad’s idea of crispy is black and believe me the dogs and I eat every bite), fried potatoes and your momma’s strong hot coffee at Country Way Restaurant with the Saints and Sinners MC. Thank you Chronic for the invite and picking up the tab for Nad and I. Thirty minutes later, we were setting up the Thunder Roads booth at Swiss Park. Other booths like Russ Brown, Gourmet Jerky and numerous jewelry and art vendors finished setting up just in time for the crowd coming in to register for the event at the front manned by Scotty, Nad and D, collecting $20 a head that included an awesome ride thru the Canyon and Livermore hills, live music all day and a killer BBQ meal that filled us up at lunchtime. Man these people know how to eat! The BBQ was so good I had a little extra only I’m not sure these overalls are going to fit for the ride tomorrow! I didn’t want to get in the way of the cooks, especially the one with the 12 foot knife. I’m kidding of course but they were seriously chopping that meat up for at least 200 of us hungry bikers. It was great riding with other MC’s such as Kanaka, Malucos and 3rd Legacy. I was impressed to get a good picture of a guy smoking a cigarette on the ride. Classic. We like riding with these guys. It’s always an adventure and nobody gets too crazy. The bike games are fun too. Slow race and weenie bite. Always a big show to watch. A lot of raffle tickets were sold the proceeds of all the intake going to help families in need as the Saints are well known for. And the Prizes! Wow. Lots of power tools and electronics. This is the one you don’t want to miss. I was happy when they presented us with a framed certificate and T-shirt and pin to recognize all the work Thunder Roads has done to support their group. Many others were awarded the same and I applaud this action with gratitude. Nice touch guys! Article and photos contributed by Dan Rogers

6th Annual Red & White Spaghetti Feed November 6 (Penryn): This is a two part event beginning with a spaghetti feed at the Valencia Club in Penryn. Bikers show up on this day to raise funds for two local charities. The Penryn Fire Protection District is a small independent fire district in Placer County that rely on fundraisers like this one to help keep the Fire District and their equipment in order to be able to be of service to the local community when in need. The other beneficiary of this event is the Koinonia Group House for Teens in Loomis. This organization brings hope to young teens with substance abuse issues, giving them hope for a brighter future in the process. Day two was on the 13th of November with a short pack ride to personally deliver the funds raised to each of the two organizations. Huge kudos to Doc and Sacramento Red and White for putting this event on and for all that showed up in support of this fundraiser that provides much needed support to two very deserving organizations Article by Stan Hill. BIKETOBERFEST October 1 (Sacramento): Sacramento Red & White welcomed everyone to their annual Biketoberfest. As bikers poured into the party from far and wide it was obvious that this was shaping up to be a big turnout. The Fryed Brothers Band were killing it up on stage and all of the volunteers were busy making sure that all the guests had plenty to eat and drink. The good times were starting to roll. These guys always pull together some great raffle prizes as they did for this party but this time they did something different that I thought was pretty cool and had never seen before. The members recognized all of their wives and significant others from the stage for all of their hard work as they undoubtedly spend endless hours in support of the events throughout the year. They were all asked to come up to the stage and receive a plaque of recognition and ap-

Frisco John receives 40 year pin preciation. Next up, the guys called Frisco John onstage to receive his 40 year pin. Now THAT is a lot of dedicated years and it was an emotional for all. Congratulations Frisco John! Then it was raffle prize time and lots of people were walking around trying to figure out how they were going to strap all of their cool swag onto their bikes. The Fryed Brothers Band once again took the stage after that knocking out another round of their famous biker tunes, it was a perfect NorCal evening and the stars were – so I put the camera down for the day! It was nice to just kick back and relax chatting and catching up with friends. Time is flying by…so keep an eye out because soon it will be time for their famous Spring Fling! have always been drawn to motorcycles since I was a young kid. My first motorcycle was a Honda 90 (LOL, but I loved it). She wasn’t fast or very big, but she sure was a lot of fun to ride. I remember one of my friends had a Honda 350, back then that was a nice bike. We didn’t have to wear helmets back in the 50’s and 60’s. I have had a few motorcycles in my lifetime and have wrecked a few, but I always got back up and rode my bike (if it was rideable). You cannot be afraid to ride with the wind, the freedom and peace of mind you get when riding is a feeling that is so unbelievably satisfying that only a true biker understands. I felt like I was missing something in my life, I felt a big emptiness in my heart. I decided I needed to join some kind of motorcycle club, if possible just for women who love motorcycles and love to ride like I do. I checked out a local shoe store in Marysville and talked with the owner and asked if he knew of any motorcycle clubs in the area. He told me that there was a motorcycle club meeting that evening and told me to come back at 6:00 p.m. When I returned to the shoe store I joined the meeting and after listening to what this group of women had to say I immediately felt like I belonged. I asked if I could check them out before deciding to join. They all laughed and said, “You want to check us out”? I said yes, and I learned that the Sisters of Scota, WMC do a lot of good work for the local foster kids and community. I told myself, “This is the club for me”. I was a hang around for a few months, and then I became a prospect for a full year before earning my wings. You meet a lot of interesting people when riding and some of the stories you hear are priceless.

Sometimes we ride away leaving new friends we had just met. Yes, I am a biker chick and I love and respect the road and new people I meet. There is nothing better in this lifetime, than being with my Sisters who I love, respect and care about. The Sisters of Scota, WMC is the best thing that has happened to me. They are my family and friends. I am very thankful I found this wonderful club. It’s an honor to be a part of this awesome group of women. I am at peace and love what we stand for. The Sisters of Scota, WMC will always be here, even when the older members are in heaven raising hell. (LOL) We care about our community and what happens. We are here to stay. I almost forgot they call me Sister Little 1. (HEHEHE)

Ever since I was a child, I’ve always had a fear of someone under my bed at night. So I went to a shrink and told him: “I’ve got problems. Every time I go to bed I think there’s somebody under it. I’m literally paranoid. I think I’m going crazy.” “Just put yourself in my hands for one year, said the shrink. Come talk to me three times a week and we should be able to get rid of those fears.” “How much do you charge?” “One hundred fifty dollars per visit,” replied the Doctor. “I’ll think about it,” I said. Six months later the Psychiatrist met me on the street. “Why didn’t you come to see me about those fears you were having?” He asked. “Well, $150 a visit, three times a week for a year, is $23,400.00. A bartender named Bubba cured me for $10.00. I was so happy to have saved all that money!” “Is that so?” With a lot of arrogant attitude he said, “and how may I ask, did Bubba the bartender. cure you?” “He told me to cut the legs off the bed. Aint nobody or nothin’ gettin’ under there now.” -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------A nice, calm, and respectable lady went into the pharmacy, walked up to the Pharmacist, looked straight into his eyes, and said, “I would like to buy some Cyanide.” The pharmacist asked, “Why in the world do you need Cyanide?” The lady replied, “I need it to poison my husband.” The pharmacist’s eyes got big and he exclaimed, “Lord have mercy! I can’t give you cyanide to kill your husband. Absolutely not! You can’t have any Cyanide!” The lady reached into her purse and pulled out a picture of her husband in bed with the Pharmacist’s wife. The Pharmacist looked at the picture and said very professionally; “You didn’t tell me you had a prescription.” -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------Daffy Duck is staying at a local hotel. He calls down to the front desk and askes for a condom... the clerk says” Shall we put that on your bill?” Daffy Duck answers “ Are you thucking thupid, I’ll thucking thuffocate. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------Rooster called 911 and said wife was dead. They asked how he knew and he said well, the lack of sex is the same but the laundry is sure piling up.

A Canadian salesman checked into a futuristic hotel in Tokyo, Japan . . . Realizing he needed a haircut before the next day’s meeting, he called down to the desk clerk to ask if there was a barber on the premises. ‘I’m afraid not, sir,’ the clerk told him apologetically, ‘but down the hall from your room is a vending machine that should serve your purposes.’ Skeptical but intrigued, the salesman located the machine, inserted $20.00, and stuck his head into the opening, at which time the machine started to buzz and whirl. Fifteen seconds later the salesman pulled out his head and surveyed his reflection, which reflected the best haircut of his life. Two feet away was another machine with a sign that read; ‘Manicures, $15.00’. ‘Why not?’ thought the salesman. He paid the money, inserted his hands into the slot, and the machine started to buzz and whirl. Fifteen seconds later he pulled out his hands and they were perfectly manicured. The next machine had a sign that read, ‘This Machine Provides a Service Men Need When Away from Their Wives; $10.00.’ The salesman looked both ways, put 10 bucks in the machine, unzipped his fly, and with some anticipation, stuck his “wanker” into the opening. When the machine started buzzing, the guy let out a shriek of agony and almost passed out. Fifteen seconds later it shut off. With trembling hands, the salesman was able to withdraw his tender unit...... which now had a button sewn neatly on the end.

I

t is 2017 and Thunder Road Church is really looking forward to another uplifting and growing year. We are launching into our 6th year as a church with an everlonging desire to reach more and more people. We have just moved into a new location in the same complex, but with a more comfortable setting including heat, airconditioning, and even carpet. We know the amenities are really not a big deal when our focus is to reach those that are still hurting, but to come in, out of the cold, where it is a bit warmer, or out of the blazing heat, where it is a bit cooler, really helps to provide the relief you may need, when your world is not going so good. We have plans to extend the inside of the building, creating a larger place to have service, and of course, for our “potluck” Thursdays, when they come around.

come, but rather on the quality and heartfelt compassion that each person receives from the church. No matter what your background, where you have been, what you have done, or your own personal judgement of yourself, there is hope and there is healing at Thunder Road Church. It is here, where you will find people that may look like you, may have been where you have been, and may have felt the presence of God in their lives, and may have been healed from the torment of their past. Drug abuse, alcoholism, jail, insanity, or near death, we have people attending that have walked that walk. Divorce, abuse, abandonment, a crushed spirit, joblessness, or anything in between, we have people attending Thunder Road Church that have been there and have found a way to overcome their challenges.

We now have inside facilities so no more walking through the rain to the bathrooms. As we move into our new location and continue to grow, we see the Lord working in and through this little church. We are a rather small, local and nonjudgmental place to gather together. Our services are relevant, uplifting, truthful, and always outreach focused to help those seeking an inner healing of peace. Many have come and now call Thunder Road Church their home. We also have some that can only make it a few times a month, but still call Thunder Road Church their family.

The first step is to know we are here to help. No guilt trips, no condemnation, no ridicule, no criticism, just a little church who loves you and is waiting to meet you. Kick off your 2017 with God’s serenity “to accept the things you cannot change, the courage to change the things you can, and the wisdom to know the difference.” We will see you at Thunder Road Biker Church in 2017. Amen!

MY TWO CENTS: HAPPY NEW YEAR!

W

ell Shit! There goes another year. Don’t get me wrong, I love New Years, I don’t like the way time is flying by. It’s like a Jack rabbit on crank. It seems like, just the other day it was a hundred degrees outside and I was on the side of the freeway wiping sunscreen out of my eyes. Then this morning, I left for work and it was 35 degrees outside! Time’s flying by way too fast, and one thing is for certain and for sure, the older I get, the more I realize getting older is NOT for pussies, especially when you ride year round. I hear people talking about how cold it’s getting, but I gotta say, this cold ain’t shit compared to the Mid-West or back east, where they have to winterize their bikes and put em’ away in the beginning of November and not ride em’ again till March! Or, stock up on food, firewood and water because they might not be able to leave the house for a week because of the snow. I don’t know how they do it. I guess if you grow up with that weather it becomes a normal way of life. It would definitely be hard for me to consider that a normal life style. I’m used to riding year round and rarely do I ride in the snow. It might drop down into the twenties a few nights during the winter but it usually warms back up to the forties or fifties in the afternoon. It might not be Tee shirt riding weather for me or plaid shorts and boat shoes for others I see riding around town, but it’s still riding weather for most of us. Unless you’re one of those people that bitch, bitch, bitch about everything, like the weather or the road conditions. You know who you are!

I heard a guy sniveling a couple weeks ago on a Poker Run about riding on a gravel road when he was told “You don’t have to ride on the gravel road, you could park your bike before the gravel and walk 20 yards to get your card punched.” He still bitched! Holy shit! If you can’t handle the adventures the road offers you, stay home and play twister! We’re here for a ride and a good time! Nobody wants to hear anybody bitch! Nuf said! I enjoy riding in the warm weather far more than riding in the cold, but I don’t complain about it, because I’m still riding and it’s not that bad! In fact, I look forward to the brisk morning rides with the sun shining and the steam rising from my breath. There’s something about riding in the cold weather that just excites the shit out of me, I don’t know, maybe I’m sick that way, or maybe it’s just the fact that I’m riding and it doesn’t matter what the weather is. Either way! I don’t judge a day by its weather. It’s not always possible, but I try like hell to enjoy everyday like it’s my last and I’m going to the electric chair tomorrow. As long as I’m riding, and I have the chance to hammer the throttle on some high speed sweeping curves and some nice tight twisty turns on a country road then I’m happy and that’s how we plan to start our New Year! Here at Rack and Pull we would like to wish everyone much health, wealth and happiness this new year. That’s my 2 cents! Happy New Year! Al Cagle www.rackandpull.com
