T

urkey Turkey Turkey, Toy’s Toy’s Toy’s…yep it’s that time of year again! Thanksgiving is just around the corner and the Toy Run season is in full swing. This great biker tradition is something that all who contribute to can feel a big sense of pride about. I don’t care how big and tough a biker thinks they are, I know that when they bring an unwrapped gift, that heartwarming feeling you get is hard to deny. Especially to see the relief on a parent’s face and simply knowing that a child’s Christmas will be a little brighter. All of that…will wipe away the toughest of exteriors. We can all relate to a parent who has financially fallen on hard times. A lost job or a serious medical issue in the family or a hundred other things out of a parent’s control can be magnified during the holidays. They are overwhelmed with stress knowing that they have no way to provide Christmas gifts for their kids. It’s tough to see people in that situation - but for that one day, the relief that a family receives from this big hearted biker community makes a world of difference. To us, that is what the true meaning of the Christmas spirit is and we are so proud and grateful that we are lucky enough to be able to join all of you in this effort every year. It truly warms our hearts to know that you are all out there selflessly giving back to your communities. The evening news is full of negativity in the world, but we all know that there are still a lot of good people out there. And we also know that a majority of these good people just happen to ride motorcycles. So have a blessed Thanks giving and take a moment just once in the day to realize just how much of a positive difference you have made in people’s lives and keep up the good work. As you know, traditionally in our December issue, TRM NorCal remembers our brothers and sisters who have passed on in 2015 and are now riding with our heavenly angels. Please submit a photograph of your loved one to ThunderRoadsNorCal@yahoo.com - please be sure to include a photo, along with their names and “Rode In” and “Rode Out” dates (ie: epitaph dates) upon submission and we will include your loved one in our upcoming December issue. ANTIQUE MOTORCYCLE CLUB OF AMERICA NATIONAL ROAD RALLY September 21-23 (Groveland): The Yerba Buena Chapter of the AMCA was set to welcome antique motorcycles and their riders from all over the country, and I cannot think of a better place to showcase our beautiful state than in and around Yosemite National Park. With around 150 antique bikes converged on Yosemite Pines Campground / RV Park. After Benito, the owner of Thunder Road Motorcycle Shop in Hollister and Yerba Buena Chapter member called me to

extend an invite to TRM NorCal - I jumped at the chance to ride out to see what this event was all about. On a bright and early Monday morning RIDE DESTINATION contributor, Chuck Loseth and I headed out for Groveland. Once there we jumped in with the scheduled ride for the day that took all of the riders through Yosemite and on up to Glacier Point. You can see some of the photos of the spectacular view of Half Dome as the riders rounded a switchback turn with

Half Dome off their left shoulders; the image was just striking to me to see all of these old motorcycles riding past this beautiful location. Glacier Point was the lunch stop and the riders were provided with a very tasty meatball sandwich, chips and a cold beverage. The loop for the days ride was about 175 miles and needless to say by the time the day was over the sweeper vehicles were filling up with broken down motorcycles. I couldn’t help but notice that nobody was getting upset when they had a mechanical, with these antique bikes it’s going to happen and fixing them seems to be a big part of the fun and camaraderie that is such a big part of this group. As everybody was settling in at camp that night several riders were working on their motorcycles while others lent a hand or even parts or tools for that matter. As I walked around and met the riders, I was impressed with what a great group of people this is and everyone was having a good time relaxing with a beer or two and talking about all the events of the day, and of course they spent a bit of time talking about motorcycles too. To be a member of the Yerba Buena Chapter of the Antique Motorcycle Club of America you have to own a motorcycle of any make that is 35 years or older - so if you love the older bikes and have a soft spot for the nostalgia of the past then you should get involved. They really are a great group and would like to meet you. Look them up at www.yerbabuenaamca.org As the sun set on this memorable day, Chuck and I had to point our rides back north and head home. With 2 more great days of riding still to come for all the AMCA riders and lots of fun at the camp site each night it was hard to pry our selves away and even though it made for a long day it was a very satisfying one. Thank you so much to the Yerba Buena Chapter of the AMCA for inviting us to join you all and we sure hope we get to hang out with you all soon. Article and photos by Stan Hill

The Primary

or many years The Motor Company has used a chain to connect the engine output to the transmission – via the clutch. Early vernacular referred to it as the front drive chain, later on dubbed the primary chain. We might as well knock out a quick history lesson and then we can discuss a few changes over the years as well as a few maintenance tips. The first primary chains required moving the transmission in order to adjust their deflection. Sounds simple enough; however, moving the transmission to adjust the primary chain then requires a corresponding adjustment of the rear drive chain AND adjusting the shifting mechanism as well.

over time can cause pre-mature failure of the main-shaft bearings and/or primary bearing. The issue is that the design only allows for the shoe to tighten and will not allow any slack in the chain. There are no shortage of after-market auto-adjust shoes that can replace the earlier and later setups, both of which will allow the shoe to flex either direction. In the maintenance department, give the shoe a look and the chain a deflection check (manual shoes) every service. The pre-07/06 Dyna bikes will have an inspection cover that allows access to the adjuster. Check the chain cold. It tightens as the components heat up. Auto-adjust bikes do not have the inspection cover, but the shoe is visible through the derby cover opening. Replacement of either requires the removal of the outer primary cover. The Sportster has always used a manually adjustable shoe. Its adjustment is different from the big twins in that the adjusting mechanism is under the primary cover and is external. Ride safe!

Nothing makes one appreciate the invention of the primary shoe like adjusting the chain on a pre-1965 HD. It was then Harley engineers had the wonderful epiphany to make the primary adjuster a stand-alone system of sorts. Enter the adjustable shoe! From 1965 to 2006 Harley used a manually adjustable shoe. It went through a few design changes over the years, but the principle remained the same, keeping a specific amount of slack in the chain for proper operation. In 2006, The Motor Company introduced an automatic tensioning system used only on the Dyna. It was then implemented on all big twins in 2007. The auto-adjust will keep the chain tensioned as the shoe wears. There are some industry experts that believe this system can apply too much tension and Thunder Roads MagazineÂŽ Northern California 10

MOTO ENVY 2015

September 12 (Eureka): Riding north on Hwy 101, the weather was unusually cold and my thoughts were filled with growing anticipation of what I would see at the Moto Envy 2015 event. I was headed to the Black Lightning Motorcycle Cafe, located on 5th and F Streets. The Black Lightning is owned by Jeff and Cassandra Hesseltine who are local motorcycle community members. The cafe, named after the legendary Vincent Black Lightning Motorcycle, is a great venue in the tradition of the Ace Cafe in London, England. It fills the bill of providing tasty biker food along with sandwiches named for different makes of motorcycles, such as” the Triumph “ and my favorite, “the Harley”. It has a fascinating atmosphere for bikers and non-bikers alike, fulfilling the old adage,”Ride to eat, Eat to ride”, which is the motto of many riders. The decor inside is like being in your local motorcycle store. Motorcycle videos are playing all the time while you are enjoy-

Jeff and Cassandra Hesseltine with long distance riders from Birmingham England

Dennis McFarland with son Chase race bike ing your coffee and food. There are also bikes, clothing and accessories for sale. The entire block was blocked off and buzzing with activity as vendors were setting up their tables and motorcycles were being entered and placed of the street for viewing. Some nice motorcycle “eye candy” was showing up which often had me thinking, “why did I ever sell that one?!” There were custom bikes from builders like Roland Sands, OCC Choppers, and Bob Steffano of Acme Rocket Bike. The one that caught my eye was “Copperhead”, a 1975 CB400 Honda built by Jim Larsen of Mother Lode Cafe Racers. Besides the custom bikes there were also antiques, rat bikes, dirt track racers and daily riders as exemplified by Craig Johnson’s 450 Honda dirt bike, complete with mud. That dirt bike also won the slow race. As I walked around with the required amount of envy, my eyes caught a Harley XR 1200 race bike #19 from Latus Motors Harley-Davidson in Gladstone, Oregon. I asked the owner, Dennis McFarland of Calpella, CA, about the history of this bike. He told me proudly that the bike had been raced by his son, Chase McFarland in the national 1200 racing series in the 2011 season. It had been sold to a private party and after two years he was able locate it and buy it back. This…to me…is a reversal of the

Ducati the grand prize

Jim Larsen Mother Lode Cafe Racers story where a son finds and restores his father’s motorcycle. He was very proud to show this racer and tell the story of his son’s racing career. Another object of envy that caught my eye was the collection of hand painted helmets decorated by various local artists for the silent auction. This auction, as well as the entire event, was a benefit for CASA Humboldt, which is “Court Appointed Child Advocates” that represents children in the legal system. There was a big raffle with the Grand Prize being a Ducati 748 which had been beautifully restored by many members of the local motorcycle community especially for this event. There were trophies (designed by Jeff Hesseltine) for the various classes of bikes entered. These very unique trophies were made of, what else but, motorcycle parts! They would certainly stand out in any garage or trophy case! The judges for this event included Surj Gish (City Bike editor), Alicia Mariah Elfving (Moto Lady. com), Bob Steffano (Kosman Specialties and Acme Rocket Bike). Judging this event was not easy as expressed to me by one of the judges. My personal favorite was a beautifully restored 1950 BSA 125 cc Bantam English Post Office motorbike brought back to a better than original condition, by Vincent Schardt. There was also an award for the person that had traveled the longest distance to enter their bike. This award, called the George Wyman Long Distance Award, was in honor of the first American to ride across the USA in 1903. It was presented by Wyman’s grandaughter,

Diane, a Eureka local. It was awarded to Chris Morgan Cettler and his lady, Lesley Clarke of Birmingham, England. They had ridden to the event from Halifax, Nova Scotia and were continuing on to South Ducati winner Jesse Mitchell America on their fully loaded BMW 1200 GS. The “Best of Show” winner went to a beautiful black metalflake scooter with ape hangers... no joke, a real scooter! This was truly a family friendly event as witnessed by the many Jeff Hesseltine custom trophies smiling faces of children I saw looking at the entries along with their Mom and Dad. I had to wonder if this smile was a sign that a spark was lit to keep the interest in motorcycling alive for future generations? In the end, over 12,000 dolDucati winner Jesse Mitchell lars was raised for CASA Humboldt. The day ended with the drawing to the raffle for the restored Ducati. The winner was a very surprised Jesse Mitchell. And hats off to Jeff and Cassandra and the Black Lightning Motorcycle Cafe and to the many volunteers who made this wonderful event possible. Hope to see everyone next year! Brad and Brian Ready To Carve

3rd Annual Mermaid Poker Run August 22 (Camptonville): This was a pretty good year for us as far as poker runs were concerned. We attended some events that we hadn’t been to before and they turned out to be a little different than your normal affairs. One of the most enjoyable was the 3rd Annual Mermaid Run, put on by Brian and Sandi of Burgee Dave’s at the Mayo. They’ve created a well organized and fun event. At about 170 miles, this is one of the longer poker runs you’ll go on, but the fine roads have you enjoying every minute. Around 9am, the sleepy little town was awoken by the vanguard of what would become well over a hundred rumbling motorcycles. We were one of the early birds and went inside for a bite to eat. Since the run also helps out the local food banks, everyone is asked to bring some canned food and we placed our donations in the appropriate box. After breakfast and a bike blessing by Reverend Pinky of the North San Juan Community Church, we headed out to the first stop, the Willow Glen Saloon at the corner of Marysville and Willow Glen Rds. There we picked our numbers which would reference a playing card back at Burgee Dave’s. Since there were six stops, you could use the best five for your hand. From Willow Glen it was nothing but fine riding to the other

five locations. Next up was O’Reilly’s Bar in La Porte. A very nice speakeasy in a quaint little town. From there it was up the twistycurvy Quincy-La Porte Road to Hwy 70 and on into Graeagle. There was a full house waiting for us at the Knotty Pine Tavern. Seemed like everyone was having refreshments. The Gold Lake Highway then took us back to SR49 and Sierra City. After getting our numbers at the Sierra Country Store and loading up on munchies, we were on our way again to St. Charles Place in Downieville. It’s a great place to hang out and definitely has a monopoly on the nightlife in Downieville. The Indian Valley Outpost was our final stop. Our travels about over, we kicked it out front for a bit while enjoying some ice cream bars. Arriving back in Camptonville, we got ready for the big feast. You know after all

the that riding, everyone has worked up quite an appetite. Well, Brian and Sandi didn’t disappoint. A huge pig roast is waiting for us. Buried in the back, a 300 pound pig has been slow cooking overnight. But, before we can chow down, we have to dig him up. Me and a few guys grab shovels and start the excavation process, we had to literally work for our dinner that day. Once above ground, Brian and Brad peeled away the leaves and soon everyone was enjoying a fine meal. While Brian and Brad did their thing though, we visited with Joelle “Xmas” Fraser, Thunder Roads newest contributor. She writes the Xmas Stories column

Working For My Dinner every month. She had a booth set up promoting her new series of books, Hardrider Stories, a collection of short stories centered around the biker lifestyle,. Good reading! Check her out at www. joellefraser.com. After a great luau and some rousing entertainment by the Joy Ride Band, it was time to call it a day. FYI: Sandi has a love for all things Mermaid, hence the decor and the “Mermaid Run.” Thanks Brian, Sandi and crew. Definitely see you next year!

12th Annual

Pink October Run

October 3 (Yuba City): 9am comes very early when you are retired. Sunshine and I got up at 7am to be at Guidera’s Harley-Davidson for the Pink October Run. We found the air brisk but the full extent of fall hadn’t set in yet. The 12th Annual Pink October Run was hosted by Guidera’s Yuba City Harley Davidson and the local Yuba City HOG. Pink October benefits the Geweke’s Caring for Women Foundation. According to the website the foundation has helped 262 women since 2006, relieving all kinds of financial burden during that difficult time in a woman’s life. (www.pink-october.org/home/gewekes-caring-forwomen-foundation) We were met with coffee, doughnuts and lots of smiles. Bikes where already lining up when we got there. Jim Guidera said approximately 300 riders attended last year’s event and with the number of bikes already pre-registered they were expecting about the same numbers for this year. Lightning Boy Kory Gibbs and the Thundering Blues Band provided the tunes. Kory was there last year and has only got better with age, he is now 15 years old. Damn can he swing an axe. Everyone had a self guided ride to Colusa Casino for a free buffet lunch, Sunshine and I (as we did last year) came

back through the Sutter Buttes. This year there were many bikes who found out about our little secret road through the Sutter Buttes but it was still better than just cruising Hwy 20. Back at the dealership, the Thundering Blues band was on stage again followed by a martial arts demonstration by Larry Levesque’s “Tiger Eye Family Marshal Arts” and his students. Jason Pullen Stunt show was last on the entertainment lineup. Jason had more people evolved with his show this year, more bikes, more riders, more stunts and as always Jason Pullen Stunts put on a great show! Last up was the raffle prizes. There were so many prizes that everyone should have walked away with something. On a serious note, breast cancer is not a subject to be taken lightly; it is mean, nasty and does not discriminate. It hurts women, their families and friends and it wreaks havoc on their financial well being. It’s a small thing we bikers can do to support Pink October so that it can support the ladies in our lives. Ride on and keep the shiny side up. The Ride NOT Taken Being a lady biker isn’t easy. Sure, it’s fun, adventurous, sexy. But now and then, I learn a lesson I wasn’t expecting. I call this latest “the ride not taken.” It wasn’t the first time I couldn’t go on a ride—not even close. Schedules don’t always click, and I’ve got a child and pets. But this was the kind of road trip I wait for all year: 500 miles of gorgeous riding through two states over three days. The weather forecast? Perfect. The route: Susanville north through the two-lane highways of the high desert to Oregon, then heading west through Klamath Falls. Sightseeing and overnighting at eerily beautiful Crater Lake - then west toward California and down the coast, spending the second night in Crescent City. That evening, we’d celebrate my boyfriend’s birthday at a seafood restaurant. Friday we’d roll down 101, taking our time, ending up that night for a weekend reunion in Ft. Bragg with steamed clams, redwood trees, ocean sunsets. Spectacular! We were going with great friends—seven bikes in all—riding one of the best routes in the world. It would likely be the last long summer ride of the year, too, which gave it a special urgency for me. Where I live it’s cold—snowy cold—most of the year. For all of the above reasons, I couldn’t wait. Then, a few days before, I got the news from my ex that his work schedule had changed, and he couldn’t take care of our son. No other child-care options would work, not overnight during the school week. The disappointment was swift and crushing, like an unforeseen wave that leaves you bruised on the beach. JC was bummed, too. He loves our rides. He’s also sentimental and wanted to spend his birthday with me. But he understood that of course my child comes first. The morning of their departure, I tucked a surprise birthday gift into his saddlebag and met everyone for breakfast early. I took pictures as they rode away down Main Street. Susanville is small enough that you can hear a pack of Harleys roll through town and up the slope of Highway 139, headed for Oregon, and I listened until it was quiet. Real quiet. For the next three days, I saw pictures of the trip on Facebook, read texts from stops along the way. I tried to imagine

Stories

by Joelle (Xmas) Fraser

the scenes they described as I went about my work, doing errands and making my son’s meals, helping him with his homework in the evenings, reading with him at bedtime—what I normally enjoy the way you enjoy comforting routines with the child you love. But part of me was hundreds of miles away, cruising along the northwest highways under fading summer skies. Then I took off my self-pity hat. This trip wasn’t about me. For the record, I don’t ride my own bike. I’m a passenger, and I thought about how sometimes it’s good for him to ride alone. Sometimes solo, sometimes with the guys. On this trip, only one other man had his ole lady on the trip. Sure, JC and I love to ride together—it’s our passion, and we’ve ridden thousands of miles as one over the years. But also I realize it’s when I’m not there, and that now and then he needs that in a way I don’t have to understand. Maybe if I rode my own bike, I would. I don’t think it’s necessarily a gender thing. What I do know is this: he’s different when he comes back: more content, more relaxed, and grateful to come home to a woman who’s got a smile rather than an attitude. On Friday, I drove eight hours to the coast with my dog, Bella, for company. I played my music while my thoughts roamed free. I tried to think of the advantages of caging it: I could bring my dog, drink coffee, talk on the phone (hands-free!), adjust the AC, pack twice as much, and arrive with perfect hair instead of helmet head. I tried… but there are just some rides you don’t want to miss. Sometimes, though, you have to. Sometimes, too, it’s good to give your man a chance to miss you. And he did miss me—that’s for sure—and I missed him. Our reunion in Ft. Bragg, was well, epic. And the next good, long ride? I’ll be going on that one for sure. _________________________________________ If you have comments, questions, or suggestions for a column, please email me at jfraserporter@yahoo.com, or message me at www.facebook.com/hardriderpress or follow me on Instagram at hardriderpress. _________________________________________

We wanted to introduce you to a unique shop in Rancho Cordova called Old E Metalworks located at 3263 Monier Circle - Unit C. It is home of the $25 oil change and not just an ordinary motorcycle shop. Owner, Alex English and his crew have 20+ years experience as shop owners behind them. Working along with his son is John English who brings over 40 years of experience working on bikes. John jokingly told us that when Alex was a baby he used a sparkplug for a pacifier. And if you hang out at this very cool shop for a while you might start to believe that just might be true! Obviously motorcycles run deep in this family’s

blood. Old E Metalworks will work on any make or model of bike from your basic routine maintenance to full on one off completely fabricated bikes - this shop does it all! They can also do milling, tig and mig welding along with brazing and lathe work with its in house machine shop. As a dealer of all the major parts distributors, they can easily get whatever you need or want for your bike. The area of expertise that really makes this shop shine is their ability to help a customer envision a one off custom look and then tapping into the crews artistic fabrication skills to execute their customer’s visualization. For example if you want a set of bars that know body else has…they can do that, or any other part that you can dream up, for that matter. Taking it from the customers vision into Old

Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 20

E Metalworks hands. On the day that I dropped by they were fixing a transmission on a bagger and turning an HD Sportster into a dirt bike for another customer. The boundaries of their imagination is unlimited and they always enjoy pushing beyond the standard. Old E Metalworks recently went through a full renovation that included increasing their work space and also adding a ‘one of a kind’ lobby to hang out in and check out all their cool displays. They are currently working on expanding the retail area to have more parts and accessories on hand along with Old E Metalworks clothing, custom made furniture and lamps. Alex calls the furniture style an “industrial chic” so you could bring the wife along for a peek even if she is not all that into bikes. Trust me, there is plenty of cool stuff here to see. The shop is always busy but clean and well organized, and for a mechanics shop even the bathroom is clean! Quality over

quantity is their shop motto. This meticulous attention to detail is what makes this shop stand out as they are interested in building a long term relationships with their customers. So you just might come in for a $25 oil change and leave with some new friends, but that is just the way these guys operate. The shop always has new and interesting projects going so be sure to follow them on Facebook at Old E Metalworks or on Instagram @Old_E_Metalworks to keep up with what is going on. Or give them a call to set up an appointment for your bike and come see for yourself at (916) 638-8907. Article and photo by Stan Hill

he first time we met Josh Hernz he was riding another head turning Dyna. We had plans to do a RIDE PRIDE feature about it, but unfortunately someone else decided that they really liked it too. Last year on the ride to a big rally, Josh and friends stopped to kick it in Truckee for a short time. When he came back to his bike, he was shocked to find that his bike had been stolen. With little to nothing to go on, the bike literally vanished into thin air. Crushed by the initial shock and disappointment, Josh was determined to recover from his loss. Here it is‌his comeback ride, so to speak. Josh has entered it in a couple of bike shows and it has done very well, recently winning best custom Dyna at the FXR BBQ & Dyna show in Novato a few months ago. A mechanic by trade Josh does a lot of the work himself and here is what he has done so far with his reincarnated Dyna Street Bob. Article by Stan Hill. Ride Destinaton:

27th Annual ABATE California State Rally T

his month we headed south to Kernville for the ABATE California State Rally. It was the 27th annual and was held at the Frandy Campground. A nice mostly shaded property butting right up to the Kern River. On Friday afternoon, we traveled down Hwy 99 to Delano, where we would pick up SR155. After refueling and munching on some trail mix, we motored on out toward the mountains. SR155 starts off on the flat valley floor, passing orange groves and various ranches. As you start to climb the road begins to twist and bend. From here to its end in Wofford Heights, it is a nice fun ride. As evening approached and with hunger upon us, when reaching Glennville, we pulled up at the Saddle Sore Saloon for dinner. Loved the place! An old school saloon on one side and a restaurant on the other. Out in cattle country, you would expect some good steaks and that is exactly what we got. Yum! We hung around later than planned and it was almost dark when we left, so we took it easy the last 15 miles or so into Wofford Heights. Once there, we checked in to the Barewood Inn, our home for the weekend. A clean

quiet place to stay and only three miles from Kernville. After settling in, we decided to head into town and hang out for awhile. Stopping at a store on the way back, we saw a couple over on the side checking out their bike. They had just hit a small deer. No damage, but their hearts were beating fast. Back in Kernville again the next morning, we had breakfast at Cheryl’s Diner. Service was a little slow, but good food. Over at the campground, they were getting ready for a day ride up into the mountains. It looked like a great ride through the passes, but would have taken up a good portion of the day, so we decided to ride around Lake Isabella and then hang out in town. If you think Lake Shasta or Folsom Lake are down, Lake Isabella is just about gone. It’s just a puddle. Wow! Getting back to town, we hit some stores and hung out at the Kernville Saloon. This establishment was one of the hosts of the rally. So after the music came to an end at the campground, there was an after party over at the saloon. This year the rally was managed by Orion Sanders of “Notorious Entertainment.” He told me that the turnout was

On Sierra Way better this year, as only a couple of spaces went unsold. Well, we’ll give him props. Everything was organized and ran smoothly. Since the bike games were scheduled to start in an hour or so we wanted to catch dinner first. We chose “That’s Italian!” Glad we did. The spaghetti and meatballs were excellent! The bike games were a lot of fun especially the slow race. About a dozen riders went at it, with Pyro coming out on top, or so we thought. There was a last minute challenge by six year old Addison on her bicycle. This was one mean machine, including custom training wheels. Pyro never had a chance. Ha! After the games were over, the Left Coast Groovies cranked it up. Everyone enjoyed the rock and roll and blues. We left for the Kernville Saloon before the encore in order to get a good seat. As folks came over, they were greeted with some more good blues by Orphan and the Abandoned One. So after partying a little the night before, we slept in and took our time packing up for our return trip. If you haven’t been in these mountains before, there is lots and

lots of great riding. We decided to take the Kern Valley Hwy up to the Great Western Hwy. Scenic woodsy riding at every turn. Before you head down the mountain, you’ll come to the Ponderosa Lodge. A fine place for lunch and a brew. With a tasty meal behind us, now it was time to tackle SR190, or as the locals call it, “The Mighty 190.” It’s one of the twistiest roads you’ll come across and a nice challenge. Well, we had a very enjoyable weekend and we would encourage any California ABATE members who haven’t made this event in a while to come on out next year. Bike Show S

eptember 12 (Dixon): It was another banner year for this great one day event - 10th Annual Renegade Rendezvous Bike Show and Tattoo Expo! The bikes and the Rendezvous girls were hot during NorCal’s number one bike show and tattoo expo at the Dixon Fairgrounds. There were more custom bikes on display at this show than at any other one day event in Northern California. Also on hand for the Tattoo Expo were some of the most talented tattoo artists in the region as they showcase their skills Which way do I go? at what they do best, tattoo art. Unique to the tattoo expo is the Art Fusion display. Tattoo artists are on stage with their backs to the audience with a palette in front of them. Each tattoo artist is given the same amount of time to work on the piece in front of them – when time is up, then they have to move sideways onto the unfinished piece that the previous tattoo artist started. This all happens while spectators can watch as these stunning pieces of art come together right in front of their eyes. It is pretty remarkable – later in the day, these creative pieces are auctioned off for charity. You really should put this one on the calendar for next September as there is a lot to see

and do! Throughout the day, the crew with Jason Pullen Stunts were drawing in a large crowd of spectators to witness some impressive Harley-Davidson riding skills; as did the Freestyle MX team with some aerobatic motorcycle jumping from one ramp to another ramp. And if music is your thing, you were covered with an outstanding line up of some of our favorite bands like The Terry Sheets Band, Moonshine Bandits and AC/DC tribute band - Riff Raff. Later in the afternoon, a nice delta breeze blew in bringing a much appreciated cool down; but it might have gone unnoticed with all the HOT GIRLS that show up at this event. Another crowd grabber is the Bikini Contest that was hot enough to keep the coolest in the crowd on fire as the girls flaunted their best attributes to an appreciative audience. Inside was the Lucas Oil Custom Bike Show which was an invite only competition. It astounds me with the talent we have here in NorCal and I would put our NorCal builders up against any other builders across the country. Folks like Executive Chopper, Citrus Heights Victory, Binford’s , Dirt Bag, Simms, TS Designz, AFT Customs,

Steve from TS Designz in Stockton was the Bikini Contest Purse winner of the Lucas Oil Money Bike Build Off receiving a nice check and all the recognition from his fellow competitors and fans alike. So next year make sure you get plenty of sleep the night before the 11th Annual Renegade Rendezvous always the second Saturday in September because this is a full day of fun and excitement. We have to give a big huge shout out to all of the event sponsors - Iron Steed Harley Davidson, Thunder Valley Casino, Lucas Oil, Geico Motorcycle Insurance, Coors Light, Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorney’s and Renegade Classics Outlet Stores Sacramento/ Modesto because without them none of this would be possible. I

’ve been riding motorcycles for about fifteen years; eight of which have been on the street. I’ve ridden through almost every kind of weather that has been thrown at me with the exception of tornados and hurricanes. I’ve had scooters, dirt bikes, super motos, and street bikes, but never a Harley. I have been thinking about getting a Harley for awhile and one evening while drinking beers I stumbled onto Folsom Harleys website (www.folsomhd.com) and saw this bad ass looking softail. It had pretty much everything I was looking for, a one hell of a unique style, a very small amount of chrome, a matte paint scheme, bad ass motor, and a great start for customizing it to exactly what I wanted. So I figured why the hell not, and called Jim at Folsom Harley and had him run the ol’ credit and sure as shit it passed and I rode off with it the next day with a big ass smile on my face and as soon as I sat on it I went from six to noon. Call it fate or luck, either way that is one hell of an awesome bike to have as a first Harley. So far I’ve ridden it in sunshine and rain and it has done great. Just gotta get used to riding it more leisurely than the street bikes, I’ve been scraping the hell out of them floor boards. Article contributed by Cody Sagan. N

ovember always seems to be the month when we realize everything is changing. The weather is changing dramatically so some people are getting their last long rides in. We notice the color of the landscape is changing to some magnificent colors of reds, oranges, and yellows. The critters are gathering their last bits of food that will get them through the cold winter months and a lot of the folks reading this magazine are planning overhauls, paint jobs, and major repairs on their bikes as they plan what they can sell on eBay to afford it through the winter. November also brings the Thanksgiving holiday. It is supposed to be a time of sharing with family and friends. But for some, it has been a trying year with lost jobs, lost loved ones, lost pets, and maybe just hard times of recovery or family issues. I can honestly say that no matter what our circumstances or predicaments may be, there is always something to be grateful for. I know it sounds cliché and something that is thrown around over and over again, but some of us that have been through some pretty horrific experiences can attest to being thankful even through the hardest of times. Our perspectives change as we share with others and go and help a neighbor or a friend in need. Even when our own house is in disarray, by going out and helping others, it can put our own world into perspective. The old adage of “there is always someone better off than you and there is always someone worse off than you” is oh - so true. We may think losing our job sucks - which it does; but if we

go serve food at the union gospel mission on a Friday night, we see folks that have it far worse than we do. We complain about our stress, our aches and pains, or having to drive an old car, until we see a soldier come back from the war, missing his or her legs, who may be destined to a wheelchair the rest of his or her life. I recently attended a recovery meeting in Roseville to see a friend of mine receive his 35 year sobriety chip. I sat in that room and was forever grateful listening to the success stories of so many people celebrating recovery. I experienced gratefulness in the true sense of the word. Although, with many years of personal sobriety behind me, I sat in a room, where I experienced someone celebrating 46 years of sobriety as well as someone celebrating 18 hours without a drink. The question is, who is more grateful, the one with 46 years or the one with 18 hours? It is the one who serves others despite of what is going on in their own lives. When they get out of themselves and reach out to helping others, they have a fighting chance to experience gratefulness and the true meaning of Thanksgiving. Happy Thanksgiving from Thunder Road Biker Church Luke: 3-11 - “If you have two shirts, give one to the poor. If you have food, share it with those who are hungry.” (NLT) “Never Ride Alone” Pastor Johnny Lujan

Dirty Whites MC RUMBLE RUN September 19 (Fairfield): Bikers gathered at Iron Steed HarleyDavidson for the Rumble Run presented by Dirty Whites MC. An early morning pancake and sausage breakfast was offered to anyone that might have an empty stomach before we toured the scenic back roads in Solano County. Bikers rumbled through Winters to the Creekside Bar before returning back into Vacaville for a quick refreshment at Judy’s Wild Wrangler Saloon. Afterward, we rode to Dirty Whites clubhouse for food, live music and boxing. We had to miss the live boxing due to another event – but we heard it was a knock out! forces by way of social media across the north state as a collective group to help displaced families in dire need. We happened to learn of this particular fire relief drive that was claimed to be the result of a club email that was an accidental “reply to all” response. Some might think it was more of a subliminal intervention guided by a higher power. We wanted to share a slice of a biker community that we are proud to be a part of!

Items such as bottled water, non-perishable food, baby food, diapers, cots, pillows, clothing of all sizes, bath towels, various hygiene supplies, kennels and pet food were taken to drop off locations like All Stars Sports Bar, Browns Corner Bar & Grill and Kenny’s Bar & Grill in Woodland as well as the Grocery Outlet in Yuba City. MY TWO CENTS:

HOW LONG AM I SUPPOSED TO WAIT?

T

here you are, riding through the country side with a warm sun sunning you. You’re rolling on the throttle through turn after turn. The bike is running great and it handles like you’re on an amusement park ride. You’re testing the power of your bike and checking your riding skills. It’s a perfect autumn afternoon and you don’t have a care in the world. You hope the big sweepers and the tight turns keep on coming! Then it hits you, all good things must come to an end, as you enter a town and come up on traffic - with stop signs and traffic lights, long traffic lights. Now you’re on a boring straight away and find yourself sitting at a left turn red light, and it’s not turning green. You start to wonder if maybe you’re color blind and can’t recognize the color green. Time goes on and you catch yourself daydreaming with heavy eyelids, breathing out of your mouth with drool starting to form. Then it dawns on you…the heat from your bike is putting you to sleep and you wonder if you just woke up and how long you were asleep and now your legs feel like they’re on fire, because your front pipe is glowing red and the goddamn light is STILL red! You say to yourself, “Screw this! I’m out of here!” You pull the clutch and snap the throttle, and then you spot him…. sitting in his car across the street in a parking lot, eating a doughnut and drinking a light non whipped mocha frappuccino and he’s watching you. You wonder if you can get away with running that red light because he’s enjoying his coffee break, but you can see he’s got a shit eating grin on his face, like he’s been waiting for you to run that light. He wanted you to run that light. You’re the most exciting thing to him since the drunken bar fight three weeks ago. What to do? What to do? I think we’ve ALL been in this situation before. I know I have, and in California there’s not a whole lot we can do. You can say screw it and wait till it’s safe and run the light, which can be a very expensive ticket, or you can make a right turn and risk getting a ticket for violation of 22101(d) CVC by making a right turn from a left turn lane or a straight lane. Or you can throw out a sleeping bag and set up camp and wait for the son of a bitch to turn green. Either way our options are limited with this problem, and it’s a very real problem. Then there’s

CA Vehicle Code 21800... (d) (1) the driver of any vehicle approaching an intersection which has official traffic control signals that are inoperative shall stop at the intersection, and may proceed with caution when it is safe to do so. This subparagraph shall apply to traffic control signals that become inoperative because of battery failure. Good luck explaining that or proving the traffic light is faulty to traffic cop that smells like a frappuccino. I have run more red lights than I care to write about and I’ve gotten several tickets for it as well, and I tried giving all this information to the cop but he was having none of that, he was just happy to write a ticket. I wish I had some good news or something positive to tell you about this problem but the fact is there isn’t anything yet, but pick up next month’s Thunder Roads NorCal and I will have some more information about this and maybe an interview with a traffic cop, if one will talk to me. So, if anyone knows of a solution to this problem let me know what it is. I’m not saying I run them and I’m not suggesting that you run it; but if you do, run the shit out of it and ride like hell. That’s my two cents. Al Cagle www.rackandpull.com Editor’s Note: TRM NorCal does not advocate camping out next to your bike while at an intersection as it could be considered more of a risk than safely proceeding through a red light. The biker or bike was not harmed in this photo reenactment.

10th Annual RIP CITY RIDERS Chilly Billy Ride Hotrod & Motorcycle Show October 3 (Petaluma): It was a big day in Sonoma County as one of the biggest and best one day events in NorCal was under way. The day started early with bikes converging into Cotati for ride registration at Sonoma Harley-Davidson. Sonoma HarleyDavidson along with the crew of volunteers from the Rip City Riders had the starting location ready and organized and it was a good thing because the large parking lot was full of bikes and riders. Small to medium packs of bikes were rolling out on the ride at regular intervals all heading out for a scenic ride/poker run before circling back to end the ride at the Sonoma -Marin Fairgrounds in Petaluma. While the riders were out on the road, the fairgrounds were buzzing with activity as hotrods of all makes and models were rolling in for the show along with quite a few bikes. When the riders arrived the vendors were ready to go and the BBQ chicken dinner was ready for all the hungry participants. After 10 years of putting this run on in honor of fellow Rip City Rider - Chilly Billy who passed away in 2005 the organizers have this down to a science. It is always entertaining with great music every year. This year on stage was a talented Double Standyrd from Ukiah that seem to be able to play just about anything. And returning again this year was Miles Schon - an outstanding local musician who also loves to ride his custom DYNA that has a matching guitar – both of which were painted by another local

talent Kirk Taylor of Custom Design Studios. The ever popular Fryed Brothers Band were getting set to hit the stage when unfortunately, the town of Petaluma had a power outage and we did not get to hear as much of them as we would have liked. But being the professionals, they are the band made the best of the situation. The Sonoma County Vet Connect was the non-profit beneficiary of this event and received a $25,000 donation check from Rip City Riders! Vet Connect is a great local charity that has a mission to step in to assist our vets where our government falls short. After talking to these guys they are doing an outstanding job and making a huge difference in Veterans lives along with their families. They currently only exist in Sonoma County, but this organization really does need to spread across the state and have chapters all across the country. Check them out at www.vet-

connect.org. Throughout the riding season, the Rip City Riders sold raffle tickets for a brand new Harley-Davidson Dyna Street Bob to be given away today. An on stage phone call was made to the lucky raffle winner - Sonny Salazar. Sonny apparently could not believe the call was real as RCR President Rob had to tell him a couple of times that he had in fact really won a bike with the crowd getting a big laugh about their phone conversation! Congratulations to all the Rip City Riders on 10 great years of success with this event! Article and photos contributed by Stan and Terry Hill

T

he Beginning: I still remember the feeling I had the day I graduated from the Riding Academy class at Iron Steed HarleyDavidson. Wearing my riding boots I walked into a restaurant with the confidence and swagger that only my best friend who took the class with me truly understood. We were riders. And not just any riders, we were lady Harley riders. In the coming months our confidence grew as we purchased and customized our own bikes. We racked up the miles, the gear, and the feeling we could do absolutely anything. The Ride: I had walked through the Iron Steed Dealership a hundred times, but this time was different. They had just purchased a used 2007 Nightster blacked out, flush mounted fuel gauge, digital speedometer, smoked lights, and only 1000 miles; she was sleek, black, and pretty. She was calling my name, and I instantly fell in love. I took the bike home that day. A month later was the Hot Rods & Harley show and the Sportster class needed more participation, so I signed my “almost stock” bike up, and guess what?! I won first place! The next year I had to defend my title, so I stepped up my game and put the bike in the shop. I had some custom paint added to the tank, red powder coating on the engine, 8”in risers, Vance & Hines black shorty pipes, and every kind of guard that wasn’t absolutely necessary removed. I won 1st place again! As much as I joke around about having a “show bike” my bike is an everyday rider, we ride hard and we ride fast. The Family: Some families spend quality time at a game night, some go out to dinner, mine…RIDE. Polar Bear rides, St. Patrick Day rides, Save the Big Twins rides, dinner rides, any excuse to ride. My Dad rode when he was younger and always said he would own a Harley again someday. When he retired, not only did he purchase a Harley, but he got a brand new bright orange CVO Ultra Glide. Shortly after my Mom got a used red Sportster from a friend, which she gave to my Brother a few months later, and purchased a brand new custom purple Street Glide with flames. When we rolled up, you knew who we were. My Dad rode like he was born on a Harley, my Mom right beside him, and then me and my brother. My Dad told me one day as we were riding together that it was like when we were little and they would take us

skiing. Didn’t matter how hard the trail was, he would look back, and there we were...right there following close behind. Two years ago my Dad passed away unexpectedly. My Mom couldn’t keep both bikes, so she transferred all her “bike bling” to his bike, sold hers, and rides his like she stole it. The Advice: You say you want to ride? Now, say you will! I would definitely tell any lady that wants to ride to start by taking the Harley New Rider Course (they are way better than the state course, giving you more time on the bikes. And if you need more help they don’t just drop you and tell you that you need more practice, they set up a one on one appointment, work with you, and get you back in the main class…FOR FREE). Not only does it save you money on insurance, you get to learn on a Harley, and it gives you the confidence you need to ride. Grab a friend to take the class with you, but if not, no worries you will make friends in the class...guaranteed. Once you get your license ride your own ride till you get comfortable enough to ride in a large pack. And don’t let anyone pick your bike out for you, there is no such thing as a “girl bike” or a “guy’s bike.” It’s all about what you feel comfortable with and what type of riding you want to do. If you don’t know for sure, rent a bike till you know. The Life: The Harley community is nothing like I’ve ever experienced. There is an instant bond with other riders, which you feel as you give the peace sign or wave as you pass on the road. They are not strangers they are your friends...your family. After a rough day there is nothing better than getting on your bike and taking a ride. I have met so many friends, and had so much fun the last few years I have been riding. Life is beautiful, why not enjoy the RIDE?
