LIVE, LOVE, LAUGH! HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO YOU AND YOURS! The best of all gifts around any Christmas tree: the presence of a happy family all wrapped up in each other. Burton Hillis In just three weeks, we will be ringing in 2015 and I am still wondering where did 2014 go? It wasn’t so long ago that I was putting together the Magazine’ 2014 Editorial Calendar, planning our May “Ladies Who Brunch” and covering Mercedes Benz Fashion Week SS2015. But I am not complaining because, like many, I love this time of year! Christmas is always filled with so much merriment – no matter where you are from its the same atmosphere; Christmas decorations, Christmas Carols, Movies and TV Shows, Egg Nog and big family dinners. Christmas is the perfect way to close one year and open another. What I look forward to most of all is spending time with family and friends. It is not something that I get to do often during the year so the Holidays are an opportunity for me to catch up with them and just forget about work for a day or so. It’s the ultimate rejuvenation for the upcoming year. Whatever you plan to do this holiday season, I pray that you will be surrounded by love! Happy Holidays to you and yours. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

RBrooks ichard Music & Acting a delicate balance! By Stacey Bethel Photos: Contributed

Issue 38|December 2014 21

R

ichard Brooks’ deep signature vocals can easily be ranked among James Earl Jones, Dennis Haysbert and Michael Clarke Duncan. From his humble beginnings as Assistant District Attorney, Paul Robinette on the first three seasons of Law & Order to Patrick Patterson, a recovering drug addict on the popular BET series Being Mary Jane, he is extraordinarily versatile. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Richard’ life was far from being easy. Raised in a single parent household, his mother worked two jobs to keep the family afloat. While his Mom worked, Richard would shovel snow to earn money. And though they were not wealthy by any means he recalls how his Mom made life fun. ”She would make me matching outfits and at three years old took me with her everywhere including to the nightclubs to see the O’Jays perform. One night during their set, they called me on stage to dance with them.” Through his hard work, Richard continually reinvents himself through his many roles including, With

Intent To Kill, ER, Chicago Hope, Diagnosis Murder, The Crow: City of Angels, The Wedding, Johnny B Good, NYPD Blue, NCIS, Charlie’s Angels and Person of Interest, just to name a few. This uncanny ability has kept him on Hollywood’s go to list since 1983. And while acting is his first love, it is not his only love. Music is and has always been a passion of his. That passion gave birth to his first album, Smooth Love. Drawing inspiration from Marvin Gaye, Barry White and Luther Vandross, Richard wrote most of the songs on the album. “In the years after Law & Order I moved back to California and created a production company called Flat Top Entertainment. Our mission is to create quality entertainment products and services and we started a record label division, Flat Top Records. I recorded and released my first album “Smooth Love” under that and also had a couple artist signed to the label. It was a good experience for the most part and I learned a lot about the music industry. But unfortunately, we tried to launch at a time when there were big changes going on in the independent record

industry and distributors were starting to go out of business and the big national record store chains like Tower Records were filing bankruptcy and closing down right as our product was in the pipeline. We got caught in the crossfire. So it was a tough time and we made a lot of good music but we had a hard time getting it out. The silver lining so to speak was that we ended up putting many of the songs into the soundtrack for our film called “Johnny B.” which we produced under the Flat Top banner and released in 2000. At that time I was also starring on a new series called “Good vs. Evil” which took a lot of my focus away from the company so I put things on hold for a few years.” But when did this love affair with the Arts begin? “They started special enrichment programs in my elementary school and when I was in the third grade I was selected to become part of it, which was basically a school within a school. It was while sitting in a school play in the sixth grade that I had my first conscious desire to act and be onstage. I remember watching the play and wondering how the lead boy got the part of Hansel.

“I ultimately landed my first series as Paul Robinette on the original Law & Order TV show. I got to work with great actors and on great material created by the powerful writer producer Dick Wolf and really learned what it took to be a lead actor.”

Issue 38 | December 2014 23

After that I kind of set out to find a way to get into acting in my community and in the seventh grade I volunteered for the drama department and started doing talent shows. I spent my summers working with the CETA program’s acting group as my summer job for about three summers. We created musicals and performed them for the others kids who were out cleaning highways and working in other CETA divisions. From there I joined the Karamu Theater which is a multicultural Center in Cleveland Ohio that’s very well-known and they inspired me to pursue a more advanced training at a performing arts high school. One of my teachers, Ms. Couch, told my mother she thought I was too talented to stay in Cleveland so my mother located me to a private boarding school called Interlochen Arts Academy in northern Michigan where I studied acting, voice and dance. I got into the school on scholarship and I ended up graduating as a Presidential Scholar of the Arts finalists. How did your career as an Actor got started? After I graduated from Interlochen Arts Academy, I went to New York and studied at Circle in the Square Theater Arts Program for two years. It was a graduatelevel conservatory program that I was fortunate to get into straight out of high school. I was the youngest student ever accepted actually and when I completed that I moved to Los Angeles. Within a few weeks I landed a major guest spot on the number one television drama at the time Hill Street Blues that launched my television career. One of your early roles was that of Paul Robinette on Law & Order. How did the part come about? The guest spot on Hill Street Blues lead to my signing with a big talent agency and to a string of other guest appearances and parts in movies, MOWs and television shows

where I ultimately landed my first series as Paul Robinette on the original Law & Order TV show. I got to work with great actors and on great material created by the powerful writer producer Dick Wolf and really learned what it took to be a lead actor on a series. I really enjoy my time on the Law & Order and I felt fortunate to be able to play such a strong character on a hit primetime series. What has been your most challenging role to date? Probably the most challenging role I have had to play so far was Frederick Douglass in “The Abolitionists” miniseries for PBS that I did a couple years ago. It was really intense because I didn’t really know much about Frederick Douglass except from his iconic image and as I explored his past and his achievements he became one of my greatest heroes. I was so inspired by what he did in that time in the face of overwhelming oppression, born in slavery to overcome the dangers and the challenges he faced in order to fight for our freedom in this country and to succeed in helping eradicate slavery through his efforts and influence. I felt a great responsibility to bring his story to life and give him a voice and try to honor his incredible legacy. Who has been some of the people that you have enjoyed working with? I’ve been very fortunate to work with some great actors and creative talent in my time from Halle Berry to Morgan Freeman, Sam Jackson, Mary Alice, John Lithgow, Michael Moriarty and all my Law and Order cast, my good friend Chris Noth. Amazing writer-creators like Joss Wheldan, Dick Wolf, Mara Brock Akil and her husband Salim. The list just goes on and on with Oprah Winfrey, Charles Barnett, Danny Glover, and all my cast right now on Being Mary Jane, including Gabrielle Union, Richard Roundtree, my brother BJ Britt. It has been a really

blessed career so far and I really love the fact that when we all get to work together we can make great friendships and sometimes life long bonds. In February 2015 you will reprise your role as Patrick, Gabrielle Union’ brother, in Season 2 of Being Mary Jane. What is it like working with the Cast? Season two premieres February 3, 2015 and it’s going to pick up where we left off at the end of season one. Patrick will have to face his responsibilities with his family and his daughters and must step up and do whatever he has to do to survive.

“The most challenging role I have had to play so far was Frederick Douglass in “The Abolitionists”

In your spare time, what do you like to do? In my spare time I enjoy reading and writing, working out, watching movies and sports and hanging with my friends, listening to live music and performing. Favorite Movie? Not sure about a favorite movie. As an actor/ filmmaker I often get so caught up in the story and the acting and the things going on behind-the-scenes watching movies that it is hard to just be a spectator and fan but recently I have really enjoyed “Arbitrage” with Richard Gere and I enjoyed the first Bourne action films. Paul Newman’s movie “The Verdict” was great and when I was a kid I loved “Cooley High” and “Sparkle”. Of course the movies I’m in are favorites too.

Favorite Album? Same with albums, I love Sade and Luther. Caribbean Christmas We Wish You a

By Neka Williams

“Back in my days, my old lady would sit and mix this out with a wooden spoon,” is what my mom says to me whenever we are baking. The holidays, especially Christmas, often evoke feelings of nostalgia. We can all close our eyes and have a mouth-watering memory as we mix or eat the batter of our favorite holiday pastry or indulge in the aroma of our favorite holiday dish. Thoughts of food, family, laughter, togetherness, and tradition swarm our noggins as we reminisce about Christmas in the Caribbean. Many traditions are anchored in recipes such as baking black cake also known as rum cake. Christmas celebrations are not complete in Jamaica, Trinidad, or Guyana without black cake on the menu. Black cake is rich in flavor with raisins, dried fruit,

cinnamon, all spice, and nutmeg, being a part of the ingredients. To achieve a divine flavor, the dried fruits should be soaked in rum for a maximum of one year or a minimum of two weeks. Some people start baking their black cake after Thanksgiving so the flavors of the fruits have more than enough time to develop. We can also journey down memory lane through a sip of our favorite Christmas drinks. Memories reside in recipes such as Dominican coquito, Jamaican sorrel, Haitian kremas, or even Trinidadian Ponche de Crème, which is similar to eggnog. These Caribbean drinks will give us a buzz but also lift your holiday spirit.

The #1 Reason Women Skip the

gym

By Charlotte Hilton Andersen

Ever planned to hit the gym and then just... didn’t? If only there was literally strength in numbers: A whopping 75 percent of women report wanting to exercise more, but not making it to the gym, according to a new survey by Sport England, a group that provides services and funding to sport in the U.K. While the women surveyed gave many different reasons for skipping sweat-fests, the researchers say it almost all boiled down to one thing: the fear of being judged. Between images of super-fit models on the walls, beautifully sculpted trainers on the floor, gorgeous actresses on the TVs, and the mental comparisons to other women (seriously, how does that she look like a super model at 5 a.m. every morning?!), it’s easy to see why so many women are intimidated. This fear only intensifies if you’re new to exercise or are just starting back after a long break; the second biggest fear cited was the fear of being judged on their abilities. Gym novices said they didn’t want to make a mistake or look like they didn’t know what they were doing. Seasoned exercisers reported feeling judged for being too good at it and therefore appearing “unfeminine.” And then there are the moms. As if worrying about stretch marks, “twin skin,” or leaky breasts isn’t hard enough, the third biggest worry that kept women from the gym was fear that people were judging them for spending

too much time on themselves and neglecting their children. This was reported by moms of all ages, but was especially pronounced in those with young kids. So do we all have to wait until we develop rock-solid confidence before we can work on our rock-hard abs? Absolutely not, says Michael Mantell, Ph.D., author of Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff (P.S. It’s All Small Stuff). Boosting your gym confidence doesn’t have to be tricky. “Increased confidence comes from self-compassion and internal happiness first of all,” Mantell says. So cut the negativity! When you find yourself thinking “I can’t do it,” “I’ll fail like I always do,” “People will laugh at me,” “I’ll get hurt,” stop yourself in your tracks and replace the thought with a more positive one. Even a simple “I’ll try” is better, he says. The next step, he says, is to not focus on bad experiences in the past, but to put your energy into making exercise into a good experience. “Focus on what went well, and why, with working out in the past,” he explains. “Then focus on what you’re grateful for regarding exercise you’ve done. Focus on your larger goals, which might be better health, looking better, or being more productive.” Remembering the big picture will help you worry less about the little stuff like how you look, and help you be more open to having good experiences—which will want to make you go to the gym more. Win-win! Issue 38 | December 2014 47

Treating Savings as an Expense

How to build your short- and long-term savings with automatic deposits Courtesy of Bank of America

e all want to build our savings, but knowing how much to save, when to save it and what sort of account to save it in can get a little complicated. The best approach is to treat savings like any other recurring expense, something you pay regularly like your rent or your car loan. One easy way to make that happen is to set up automatic transfers from your checking account into a few different types of savings solutions to best meet your short- and long-term savings needs. The emergency savings fund—an easily accessed short-term cushion

The short-term emergency fund—a safety net Many experts recommend you keep 6 months of living expenses in a separate savings account to protect your family in case of a medical emergency or job loss. To get started, deposit a fixed amount, such as $100, from your paycheck to a savings account via direct deposit. Or simply transfer the money from your checking account into a regular savings account or money market savings account after each pay period. You want your emergency savings to be accessible quickly in an emergency, but not so accessible that you’ll borrow from it for everyday expenses. It helps to keep this account separate from other savings, and to think of it not as a cushion or investment but as a breakglass-in-event-of-emergency fund.

You should generally have $500-$1,000 in a savings account as a safety net for unexpected but necessary expenses like a car repair or family emergency. If putting all this away at once seems like tough, set up monthly automatic transfers from your checking account into an easy-to-access Long-term savings—preparing for your savings account.
