OUR MISSION To glorify God by providing for students the highest quality college-preparatory education, training them in the biblical world and life view, thus enabling them to serve God in spirit, mind, and body. CLASS OF 2018 SENIOR VERSE For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. GREETINGS, WILDCATS! it has been yet another banner year at trinity! Our current and past students have been doing things that make us all proud, and I am excited to give you a brief preview of those accomplishments in this space. This volume will provide more detail on these achievements, along with the many other innovative and outstanding programs underway at your alma mater. During the fall of 2017, Trinity was one of only a select number of schools nationally to receive the prestigious Stephen F. Robinson Collaboration Grant from our accreditation partner, the Southern Association of Independent Schools (SAIS). Trinity was selected for this honor due to our new partnership with Valiant Cross Academy, an up-and-coming private school for underprivileged young men in Montgomery. As part of this collaboration, Trinity, Valiant Cross, Air University at Maxwell Air Force Base, and Troy University will partner to provide students at both schools the opportunity to learn about cybersecurity, and prepare them to study in this emerging field as they enter college. Troy University will be housing VCA’s new high school this fall, and will allow us access to their professors in this field. Professors at Air University, along with volunteers from the Civil Air Patrol, will round out this innovative partnership endeavor. In May, Trinity graduated its largest class in school history as 88 students received diplomas. Among the graduates was Will Merrill, who was also named a National Merit Finalist. This class produced a large number of academic scholarship winners, and sent students to a variety of colleges and universities throughout the nation. Finally, this group capped off a five-year trend of unprecedented increases in our average ACT score. Trinity’s average ACT score has increased by five points over the last five years, and Trinity’s new ACT Prep program attracts students from across the River Region due to the excellent results it produces. As is so often the case, Trinity succeeded on the athletic field across the board, winning the Alabama High School Athletic Association Sportsmanship Award for the fourth year in a row. This award is presented annually to the handful of schools in Alabama that manage to complete a full athletic year, in all sports, with no fines or ejections. For the second time in three years, the Trinity’s Boys Cross Country Team won the State Championship, cementing their place as the premier 4A Cross Country Team in the State. Additionally, for the first time in school history, our Girl’s Soccer Team won the State Championship. Our alumni are continuing to make Trinity proud. Seven graduates from the class of 2014 were recently admitted to medical school, and two students from this same class won the prestigious Algernon Sidney Sullivan Award: Wesley Curles at Auburn, and Sarah Grace Stone at Troy.

as you can see, trinity students are making a difference. I deeply appreciate your continued support of our school, and I remind you to come “home” often, because it is always GREAT to be a WILDCAT!

COACH ELISA BOWDEN RETIRES AFTER 42 YEARS OF FAITHFUL SERVICE

A TRINITY TREASURE! Hundreds of people from across the generations streamed into the media center on Sunday, May 6, to pay tribute to a real “Trinity Treasure.” Coach Elisa Bowden retired from Trinity at the conclusion of this school year after 42 years of faithful service. Coach Bowden was a pioneer of the Trinity girls’ athletic programs, and led several teams to tremendous success— including a State Tennis Championship. She also taught math and Bible classes in the middle school for several years, masterfully helping students of all ability levels master the fundamentals of arithmetic and develop a genuine love for God’s Word. However, it has been the genuine love for her students and for her Lord that sets Coach Bowden apart. She was on a mission these last four decades, and generations of students and parents benefited. Head of School Kerry Palmer commented, “I could share dozens of Elisa Bowden stories. For me, she has been an encourager and someone to hold me accountable. For our students, she has been a real coach—on the court and in the classroom—pushing kids to do more than they ever thought possible. For our parents, she has been an encourager as they have navigated the sometimes-challenging waters of middle school. For Trinity, she has been one to embody the real spirit of our institution.”

What sets Coach Bowden apart is her genuine love for her students and for her Lord.

HER LEGACY WILL LIVE ON IN THE COUNTLESS LIVES SHE IMPACTED FOR CHRIST AND HIS KINGDOM. THANK YOU, COACH BOWDEN, FOR ALL YOU HAVE DONE FOR TRINITY SCHOOL, AND FOR ALWAYS REMINDING US... IT IS GREAT TO BE A TRINITY WILDCAT!

Elisa Bowden will be missed, but she will always be a part of our beloved Trinity Family. Her legacy will live on in the countless lives she impacted for Christ and His Kingdom. Thank you, Coach Bowden, for all you have done for Trinity School, and for always reminding us...it is GREAT to be a TRINITY WILDCAT!

IN MEMORIAM

coach jack schweers 1943-2018

ONE OF THE MOST INFLUENTIAL COACHES IN THE STATE OF ALABAMA The Trinity Family lost a giant on August 27, 2018. Coach Jack Schweers, or “Captain Jack” as many of us fondly called him, went home to be with the Lord after a long and courageous battle with several ailments. Coach Schweers led the boy’s basketball and tennis programs for 24 years, and compiled an impressive record with both. However, the most impressive thing about Coach Schweers was the impression he made on his players, fans, fellow coaches, and co-workers. A consummate professional, Jack Schweers will always be remembered as a true gentleman—on and off the court.

H

undreds of people attended a retirement reception for Coach Jack Schweers on May 18, 2018, who retired from Trinity at the conclusion of the 2017-18 school year. Those in attendance paid tribute to Captain Jack for his leadership and commitment to Trinity’s athletics over the years. In appreciation of his dedication to Trinity and on behalf of the Board of Trustees, Kerry Palmer presented Coach Schweers with a Proclamation, which renames

8

the Capital City Classic Basketball Tournament to the “Jack Schweers Capital City Basketball Tournament.” During the 2017-18 basketball season, Coach Jack Schweers was presented with a Proclamation by the Board of Trustees, recognizing his 400th win and his 24 years of being the Head Coach of Trinity Boys Basketball. Jack Schweers, a native of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina was a 4-sport star who went on to play college basketball at the College of Charleston. He coached for 42 years as a basketball coach, but more importantly, he was a molder of young men. Schweers, a former college Assistant at Georgia Southern and Auburn University at Montgomery, helped guide the AUM Senators to a 32-3 NAIA National Runner-Up finish. He was a part of nearly 300 wins as a college assistant under Larry Chapman. Coach Schweers felt lead to pursue a career in High School Basketball and after making stops at Monroe County and Prattville, Schweers finally landed at Trinity. He coached basketball for 24 years at Trinity. Under the direction of “Captain Jack,” his teams made 8 Regional appearances, 7 Elite Eight appearances, 2 Final Four births, and 1 State Championship—the dream

team of 1999, who went 31-1. Schweers was named the ASWA Super All-State Coach of the Year for the 1998-99 season. He was selected to coach in the AlabamaMississippi All-Star game that same year. He won 400 career games in his time at Trinity and coached in over 1,170 games during his 42-year career. In addition to his distinguished career in basketball, Coach Schweers served as the Head Coach of the Trinity Boys Tennis team for 20 years. During that time, Trinity Boys Tennis amassed 4 Boys Tennis State Championships in 2000, 2005, 2007, and 2008 under his astute leadership. He led Trinity to the Boys Tennis State Tournament for 20 consecutive seasons, 6 runner-up finishes, 2 third-place finishes, and won 31 consecutive matches between 2000-2002. The successes he experienced are no doubt great, but he championed the relationships with the many players he coached over the years. He loved opposing players, opposing coaches, and even referees. Coach Schweers will be remembered as one of the most influential coaches in the state of Alabama.

Left to right—Coach Randy Ragsdale, Head of School Kerry Palmer, Board of Trustees President Todd Parsons, and Athletic Director Harold Hilliard. 10

The Trinity football field was renamed the Ragsdale-Boykin Field during a halftime ceremony of the 2017 Homecoming game. Coach Ragsdale and his immediate family were on hand for the renaming, which was presented by Head of School Kerry Palmer, Board of Trustees President Todd Parsons, and Athletic Director Harold Hilliard. The football field was renamed in appreciation of Coach Ragsdale’s 28 years of dedicated service and leadership—on and off the field—and to honor his legacy of coaching, listening, caring, loving, serving and impacting generations of athletes.

Samford University President Dr. Andrew Westmoreland Kicks Off 2017-18 Leadership Series

S

amford University President Dr. Andrew Westmoreland was the speaker for the first installment of the 2017-18 Leadership Program

Series on August 16, 2017. The Leadership Program Series is a series of “Leadership Speakers” that are offered throughout the year to Trinity students (Grades 6-12) and Trinity parents. The series features distinguished, Christ-like leaders from around the southeast region. When asked about his vision for Trinity, Head of School Kerry Palmer said, “My vision is simply this: To have a Biblical world view be woven throughout the fabric of this school, inside and out.” Since its inception our Leadership Series has been a tremendous success. Students have been given an opportunity to experience a more up-close and personal view of leadership, allowing students to interact and be inspired by various leaders. “I know for a fact, that the leaders of tomorrow are walking the very halls of this school today,” stated Mr. Palmer. A brief reception held in the Middle/Upper School Library follows each program, allowing students and parents to interact with our guest speakers. As Samford’s 18th president, Dr. Westmoreland has led the university to embrace a vision to enrich and expand its service to students and further inspire their desire to meet the needs of the world. To advance this vision the university is committed to a challenging strategic

A SPECIAL EVENT TO BENEFIT THE ANNUAL FUND

TRINITY’S ANNUAL TRUE BLUE GALA AND AUCTION HELD SATURDAY EVENING, FEBRUARY 9 AT WYNLAKES GOLF AND COUNTRY CLUB, WAS AN ENJOYABLE AND LIVELY EVENT FOR ALL GUESTS!

O

nce again, the online auction proved to be a popular event with Trinity families! Selecting from over 300 donated items, bidders chose from an array of oil paintings, beautiful antiques, fine furnishings, Trinity “exclusive” items, such as VIP parking spots and front row seats to Trinity events. There were YETI® tumblers monogrammed with the Trinity crest, fine jewelry from Marquirette’s, and the list goes on and on. Many online auction goers enjoyed the wide array of pricing of items with opening bids starting as low as $10 on several items. Bidders also took advantage of bidding on the higher ticket items, which included an extra large Big Green Egg®, a trip to Argentina, and beautiful coats and vests from Henig Furs.

While listening to lively jazz music performed by The Coleman Woodson Group, guests dined on delicious hors d’oeuvres prepared by Wynlakes’ Chef Joe. Tender grilled vegetables, juicy top sirloin, flavorful seasonal fruit, scrumptious quesadillas, and savory sausage and cheese stuffed mushroom caps were served amidst cascading flowers. A fully equipped mashed potato station was a crowd favorite as well as the dessert display, which included assorted cookies, tangy brownie tarts, and Trinity themed cupcakes. The festive environment was contagious and guests continued to mingle even after the auction’s closing bell rang at 9:00 PM. Many guests stayed around to see who won the tuition raffle, where the winner receives half-off one child’s tuition. The draw-down was filled with many anxious and humorous moments as Trinity parent and guest emcee, Troy Teel, called out each number, but in the end, Aduston Rogers had the winning ticket!

Field day is a very important day in the life of a child in Lower School. From “reveal day” to the announcement of the winning team, our students “get fired up” in anticipation of the day’s events. Field Day is a great chance for students to let loose, get active, and have a good time. In many ways, Field Day is a culminating event that highlights the value held in being physically fit. It gives us an opportunity to see what physically-literate children look and sound like. And at the end of the day, it is all about creating a memorable experience.

Therefore encourage one another and build each other up. 1 Thessalonians 5:11 (NIV) #trinityfieldday18 A YEAR IN REVIEW

Mentorship Programs The Kindergarten-Senior Buddy program at Trinity is an opportunity for growth and connection between kindergartners and seniors. Each kindergartener is assigned one to two seniors. Buddies get to know each other throughout the year during events organized by the Senior Class Student Government Association. This program also allows kindergarten students to build relationships with upper classmen. Students carry these relationships throughout their career at Trinity and beyond. Fifth graders are partnered with kindergarten students, where they meet in the Lower School Library two to three times a month for activities. The library is also home to a “communication station, which enables the students to correspond by mail on a weekly basis. Many lifelong friendships have been formed through this program throughout the years!

Trinity’s First CyberPatriot Team Secures Second Place in the Silver Division for the State of Alabama Congratulations to Trinity's first CyberPatriot Team—Jack Yohn (Captain), Garrett Flowers, Peyton Lankford, Riley Wuokko, Den Pendleton, and Jake Combs—for placing second in Alabama among silver-tiered teams! CyberPatriots is a cyber defense competition where middle and high school students act as IT professionals protecting corporate and small company networks. Each team is five students (with one alternate) competing on Cyber’s network during a six-hour round where they pour over image software to locate “holes” where hackers could get through to their systems. Once located, CyberPatriots work to rewrite that software and close those hacker gates, thus protecting valuable corporate and personal information. Based on student interest, Upper School Girl and Boy Cyber Patriot teams were formed. The enrollment fee for the boys’ team was graciously covered by a scholarship from the Civil Air Patrol. Since CyberPatriots want to encourage female participation, the enrollment fee for the girls’ team was waived. The “CyberGals” were Caidra Owens (Captain), Lauren Vermillion, Georgia Mracek, Kathryn Toole, and Abigail Trehern. Both teams competed well during the competition. January 2018 brought about some uncharacteristic cold temperatures for Alabama and our Kindergarten teachers used the cold weather as an extraordinary learning opportunity for their students! While studying the “winter” season and freezing temperatures, students conducted several experiments, including turning water into ice! They participated in several freezing and melting “STEAM” activities, culminating with a “snowball fight” on the playground during recess!

Physics Class Students Construct Mobiles as They Mentor K4 Students onecampus

Upon completion of their projectile unit with two-dimensional motion, Upper School Physics students moved on to repeated motion by studying pendulums and then rotational motion with torque forces. Formulas for both were mastered with students finding the axes of rotation on multiple balancing scenarios. To finish the torque unit, students were challenged to construct mobiles using six objects of different masses. Two seniors elected to visit Trinity’s K4 program for a fun surprise. The K4 teachers, Mrs. Bethea and Mrs. Waddell, helped Lauren Hemmings and Katie Scott pick six of the students’ favorite small toys. When Katie and Lauren finished their mobile, they delivered it back to the preschoolers to enjoy. The students were curious to learn how their toys were balancing on those “sticks,” so Lauren and Katie explained the term “fulcrum” and how they are able to locate different points of rotation in order to balance the entire system. Physics students are not sure how long the toy mobile will last, since some of the K4 students may miss their favorite small objects of play. Regardless, it was a fun opportunity for Upper Schoolers to visit and teach ideas to the younger ones, which is always a unique blessing for all students on Trinity's “one-campus” environment. Robert McGowin Writing Workshop Encourages Promising Young Writers Trinity students had the extraordinary privilege to participate in the annual Robert McGowin Writing Workshop this past spring. Retired Trinity teacher Robert McGowin enlisted regional writer and provocative thought producer Jim Reed to help students dive deeply into their thinking and writing. It was another reminder of the value of the Trinity education where students are repeatedly offered the opportunity to think deeply and write richly.

“I have once again been reminded of the importance of writing and art in general. I have always thought that the expression of feeling and thought must be preserved and Jim Reed has shown me many new ways to achieve that.” “This has been an incredible experience for me to expand the possibilities for my writing that I can now take into my own perspective and expand.”

Audiences were “Walking on Sunshine” for Trinity’s Production of “Back to the ’80s” Trinity's production of “Back to the 80’s" amazed audiences with sell-out performances on all three nights! Together, audiences and cast members had the “time of their lives” performing classic 80’s tunes such as, “Footloose,” “We Built This City,” “Mickey,” and everyone’s favorite rendition of “500 Miles,” which was perfectly portrayed by Ben Loftis (Corey) and Welden Willis (Michael), who gave unforgettable performances!

Over 100 students participated in this year's annual spring musical, which marked Trinity's 25th production—all under the direction of Mrs. Mala Kelley. Trinity’s annual musical is a unique opportunity for students. Any 10th-12th grader can be in the play and it is completely student-run—from the set design, lights, sound, props, makeup, and choreography. Many students worked behind the scenes over the last 7 months creating the sets for the grand musical in Set Design and Construction class, taught by Dr. Becky Miller and Mr. Richard Chandler. The majority of all the cast and crew are also members of various varsity athletic teams, band, cheer team, dance team, science olympiad team, youth judicial member, and youth legislature participants. They all found time to balance many practices, games, and matches, while rehearsing lines, learning dances, and preparing set changes for the play. At the conclusion of the final night's performance, the Linda Shands Award for “Excellence in Drama” was awarded to Ben Loftis. This award is named in memory of sixth grade teacher, Linda Shands, and is voted on by cast and crew for a three-year senior participant who reflects the same spirit, encouragement and enthusiasm for performance Mrs. Shands shared with all who knew her.

As part of the exhibition, Bewley led a workshop with Trinity students, using a method Bewley developed while completing her BFA Senior Thesis, where she and the students cast plaster into plastic bags to create small pillow-like sculptures. Their beautiful handiwork was on display alongside Bewley's exhibit as a part of the collaborative component of the gallery. In addition, Bewley critiqued the work of Trinity AP Art students. The Pop Up Gallery and Collaborative at 121 Coosa Street, an initiative that was launched two years ago by Trinity's Upper School Art Department, provides opportunities for exhibition and collaboration between emerging student artists and professional artists. The gallery and collaborative studio is a place where professional contemporary artists exhibit work, collaborate with students and the local community by introducing a variety of contemporary art and social practices. The goal is to present artists and art in a way that engages and enriches emerging student artists and the community, through the creative process by means of engagement initiatives, exhibitions and educational programs. 48

WILDCAT PRIDE MARCHING BAND ENJOY SUCCESSFUL YEAR

The Wildcat Pride Marching Band enjoyed great success during the 2017-18 school year, continuing their standard of excellence that makes the group such a pleasure to watch and hear every week. Their 2017 halftime show, “PURE: The Struggle of Good and Evil,” received critical praise and pushed the band to new heights. On September 30, 2017, the band participated in the second annual Blackwater Classic at Milton High School in Milton, Florida. Of the twelve bands performing, the “Wildcat Pride” was one of only four bands to receive straight superior ratings. Milton High School is the alma mater of Band Director, Russell Greene, so it was a meaningful homecoming performance. On October 7, the band performed at the 48th Annual Southeastern United States Marching Festival at Troy University. They received straight superior ratings from all seven judges and the show was a big hit among the Troy crowd. October 21 marked the final competitive performance for the “Wildcat Pride” this season, as they will make the 2.5 hour drive to Jacksonville State University for the Contest of Champions, where they will not only seek the best score for themselves, but will also be competing against the scores of other bands for Best in Class and Best in Division awards. With roughly 200 hours of practice this season under their belt, the band is looking to end on a good note. 50

Passing the Gift The 5th grade class spearheaded a Trinity’s “Change 4 Change” Friday and raised $1,751.50 for Heifer Project International (HPI) from generous donations from Lower, Middle, and Upper School students. Fifth graders learned about Dan West and how he established HPI, while studying Biblical Choices Bible Curriculum. The founder of HPI, Dan West, was a leader who used his vision to work for the kingdom of God. Instead of just handing out cups of milk to hungry children doing relief work during the Spanish Civil War, he thought how wonderful it would be to give a cow to a family. Each family receiving a cow would then pass the first calf to another needy family. This idea was put into place and became known as “Passing the Gift.” Heifer Project International was established in 1944 and provides assistance to families in countries of great poverty all over the world. HPI purchases animals such as goats, heifers, llamas, alpacas, camels, pigs, ducks, rabbits, and honeybees. These animals make a big difference for families in need. Thank you to everyone for donating and allowing others to “Pass the Gift” of a better life to those in need!

Succeeding in the Classroom by

Would you like to know how to help your child to be more successful in the classroom and ultimately in life? Why not consider community service? It has been proven that students benefit greatly— both academically and emotionally from volunteering their time and giving to make the community and world a better place. This is why we try to provide a variety of service opportunities for our Lower School students. We believe that while completing community service projects, students develop real-world skills that will help them succeed in middle school, high school and beyond. They practice:

 Leadership  Problem-solving  Collaboration with others  Time management  Communication

OUR VISION 76

Most importantly, students learn that the work they do and the money they contribute can make a real impact in the world thus accomplishing our vision for Trinity students which is to develop Godly leaders who adopt the relevance of a Christian world and life view, whose faith and work are inseparable, and who engage their culture and change it!

IN MEMORIAM

RAYMOND BOYKIN 1921-2017 Raymond Boykin answered the call to lead our school when it opened its doors in 1970, and he masterfully guided Trinity through its early years. After briefly retiring from education, Coach Boykin returned to Trinity as a coach and math teacher where his impact on students was simply immeasurable. The majestic oak trees that stand along East Trinity Boulevard were planted by Coach Boykin. They, like our school, have grown and matured over these many years. Head of School Kerry Palmer stated, “They stand as a testament to what Coach Boykin did for Trinity: He had a vision, and he took the steps necessary to see that vision become a reality. That little ‘sapling’ of a school way back in 1970 has grown into the ‘majestic oak’ it is today in large part because of Raymond Boykin and the fine educators he recruited to help establish our school. It was cultivated and cared for as he coached and taught countless Trinity students through the years. And, just like those great oaks, our school will stand and thrive for years to come—a permanent testament to a great man.” A YEAR IN REVIEW
