Police quiz teenagers over death crash Pedestrian Ashley O’Brien of Collingtree Avenue, Winsford, suffered multiple injuries after being struck by a red Vauxhall Corsa travelling along Road One at Winsford Industrial Estate towards Northwich at 1.35am on Saturday. The teenager, believed to walking home after a night out, was pronounced dead at the scene. The car involved was found abandoned at a roundabout a short distance away. “Two males aged 16 and 17 were arrested and released on bail late on Saturday evening,” said a Cheshire Police spokeswoman. Mr O’Brien was studying forensic science at the Hartford Campus. He was a pupil at Verdin High School until September last year. Martin Howlett, head of the Winsford High School Federation, said: “Ashley was a lovely lad. He was a well-respected pupil and a high achieving student. “His tragic death has come as a shock. Our

By David Goodban thoughts are with his family and friends.” College principal John Reilly echoed Mr Howlett’s thoughts, and said students affected by the tragic accident would be offered counselling. “The college would like to send its deepest condolences to Ashley’s family and friends,” he said. “Ashley was performing very well on his course. He was a popular and well-liked member of the group.” The teenage suspects, both fromWinsford, have been bailed until March 31. HOPES a mystery developer would build a new football ground in Winsford appear dead in the water. Campaigners facing the task of raising more than £500,000 to renovate the dilapidated Barton Stadium thought they had been thrown a lifeline when Vale Royal mayor and former Winsford United chairman Malcolm Gaskill initiated talks over a possible new ground at Meadow Bank. It was suggested the developer could bulldoze the existing stadium and build houses on the site, and create a new “Conference standard” home for the club on land off Bradford Road. But United director Alan Johnson said it now looks like a non-starter. “It was worth investigating,” he said. “But it’s not happening.” Cllr Gaskill, Winsford United chairman from 1989-92, said the company involved decided the proposals, based on a blueprint produced in the early 2000s, were not viable. However, Vale Royal head of leisure services Chris Bottomley has mooted the possibility of United moving to upgraded facilities at Knights Grange and the council assuming control of the 4.5 acres of land at Barton Stadium. Mr Johnson said: “Winsford United wants to be part of the solution to the further development of the town, we don’t want to be a problem. “As long as our interests are safeguarded we are prepared to listen to whatever options are on the table. But we can’t sit around while our ground falls down around us.” ■ A meeting was held at the ground last night, Tuesday, for club stakeholders to discuss the options available. Cars stolen

A GREEN Mitsubishi Shogun, registration K805 WPJ, was stolen from the car park opposite the Winsford Civic Hall on Dene Drive at about 8.30pm on Thursday. Another car, a Metro with the registration plate K392 VFK, was taken from behind the shops on the Grange Estate on the same night. Anyone with information on either theft is asked to call Det Sgt Tony Jones on 01244 612594.

Blaze at house

TWO children were taken to Leighton Hospital for a precautionary check-up on Thursday night after a fire at a house in Northwich. The blaze broke out in the kitchen of a home in Chester Road and firefighters were called out at 10.15pm to extinguish the flames.

Theft from shed

ELECTRICAL goods worth £300 were stolen from a shed at Brindley Avenue, Winsford, between 3pm and 6pm on Wednesday (January 28). Police said a television, video recorder and remote-controlled car were taken and are appealing for witnesses.

Towpath delays hit river users TWO Northwich sports clubs which use a half-mile stretch along the River Weaver are being forced to tread water. The Chronicle has learned the 700m towpath from Monarch Drive, Kingsmead to the Riversdale bridge, used by Northwich Rowing Club and Northwich Anglers Association, could now take another six months to complete. “They have been doing it for five weeks already,” said one user of the path. One man and his wheelbarrow could do it in a fortnight!” The stretch includes around 100 fishing stations used by the Anglers Association, which has already had to move three home matches since the start of December. Secretary Roy Garton said the club could ask for financial compensation if they are further inconvenienced.

The route is closed to pedestrians, and Northwich Rowing Club has also been forced to vacate the stretch. “We’ve got an event in mid March so I would’ve hoped it was going to be finished before then,” said secretary Carolyn MacRitchie. British Waterways is carrying out the work, but could not be reached for an estimate on how long the work will take. Cheshire County Council is overseeing the project as the path is a public right of way. A spokesman said: “The closure is necessary to prevent the likelihood of danger to the public due to the rebuilding of the towpath to improve its quality and width. “The order will continue in force for a period not exceeding six months, or until the works are completed - whichever is the sooner.”

Pair bailed over woman’s death

Man’s nose bitten off by assailant

TWO men arrested in connection with the death of a Barnton woman have been released on bail. Leah Gest, 36, was found dead at a house on Beech Lane on Thursday and the men were arrested on suspicion of murder. Paramedics were called to the address at about 1.30pm, but were unable to revive the woman. Police are now awaiting the results of a postmortem examination, and it appears the men are unlikely to be charged. A police spokeswoman said: “The circumstances surrounding the death do not appear to be suspicious at this time. However, pending the full results of a postmortem examination two males remain on police bail.”

A 20-YEAR-OLD man had part of his nose bitten off during what police described as a “vicious” assault in Winsford in the early hours of Monday. The victim was attacked near to the Top House pub at around 1.25am, and was taken to Leighton Hospital with severe facial injuries. It has not been revealed if the medical team managed to sew back the missing part of the victim’s nose or if he underwent plastic surgery. Anyone with information about the attack - or the victim’s assailants - is asked to call Det Sgt Tony Jones at Winsford Neighbourhood Policing Unit on 01244 612594.

Memories of the day my lost youth died JUSTWilliam The musings of a middle-aged man from Middle England FIFTY years ago, on February 3, 1959 Buddy Holly was killed in a plane crash and I cried my eyes out and so did many of my friends. Why on earth would 13-year-old boys cry just because a singer had died? Well, to us Buddy was more than a singer, he was one of us. Let me explain. Elvis was a superstar even then, but more to the point he was so good looking there was no way we could attempt to emulate him. But Buddy was different. He wore glasses to start with. Anyone who wore glasses was a “geek” until he came along and showed it didn’t matter what you looked like if you had talent. His death was somehow the end of an era. We had never experienced the loss of someone who we felt close to before, and strange as it may seem we did feel close to Buddy. We considered him a friend for he expressed our feelings in his songs. Now suddenly he was gone. It seems strange, but I don’t think any of us became fans of anyone else the way we had been of Buddy. We of course loved the Beatles and the Rolling Stones (we even saw them live on stage at the Memorial Hall), but not the way we had loved Buddy. The show “Buddy” has been on at the Lowry recently. I saw it for the first time about 15 years ago in Manchester. On that occasion, and on subsequent occasions, I cried when the announcer said that Buddy and his two friends, the Big Bopper and Richie Valance, had been killed that far off February night in a plane crash. I felt really stupid the first time it happened, I rubbed my eyes desperately trying to make out I was merely sweating, and I remember being extremely relieved when the lights came up again and the artists came back on stage and did some more songs, allowing me to regain my composure. But then I realised I was not crying for Buddy, I was crying for something far more important. I was wearing a black tie on Tuesday February 3, 2009, not for Buddy Holly and the day the music died, but for my lost youth.

Enforce ban on smoking in pub

SMOKING is banned in pubs – but is it being enforced? I was waiting at the bus stop outside a pub in Northwich the other day when, not only was a chap smoking inside the door, he stepped out and threw the remnants of his cigarette on to the street. It wasn’t as though it was raining and it wasn’t as though there wasn’t one of those funny little metal things attached to the door frame – there are two to pick from. When you wait at the bus stop all you can see are the cigarette ends that litter the floor outside the pub. Why can’t the landlord enforce his smoking ban properly and get his regulars to dispose of their rubbish in a less anti-social manner? ‘SAX’ (via email)

Probe into state of pig farms

WHILE Jamie Oliver is busy denouncing substandard foreign pig farms and urging consumers instead to buy British, Animal Aid conducted an eight-month investigation into some of the leading pig farm operators in this country. Among the scenes we filmed were pregnant and nursing sows incarcerated in farrowing crates; dead, sick and dying piglets littering the pens; animals wading through filth or living in utterly barren environments; a lack of bedding; a lack of environmental enrichment, despite the law stating this must be provided; ‘culled sows’ dumped in the dirt outside; and wheelie bins full of dead piglets. While many other countries have similar or even worse standards, our investigation has found welfare on British pig farms is nothing to boast about. If people took a look at the film and photographs from our investigation, we believe they would be shocked to their core. Suffering is suffering, no matter which country it occurs in. See www.animalaid.org.uk for full details of the investigation. KATE FOWLER Head of campaigns, Animal Aid, The Old Chapel, Bradford Street, Tonbridge, Kent, TN9 1AW

Community centre is looking for a boost THE committee of Lostock Gralam Community Centre is looking for new blood in 2009 to help boost its skills. The committee runs the community centre at Stubbs Lane – and last year was a good one for the centre. We completed refurbishment work in the main hall and kitchen and we had floodlights put up on the car park. With the help of Voluntary Action Vale Royal, we set up a computer room at the centre. The parish council has also refurbished the children’s playground at the Stubbs Lane playing field, so the centre is well set up for a bright year ahead. We now wish to strengthen our committee and we are looking for a secretary and a health and safety officer. If anyone who has these skills is willing to join a committed team of volunteers, we would be happy to hear from them. Interested volunteers should contact me on 01606 351217, or Maggie on 01606 43478. The committee meets at the centre on the first Thursday of each month at 7pm. JACKIE GARNER (by email)

disputes about British jobs for British workers with interest, not least of course because of our National Power installations here in Northwich, on the site previously known as ICI Winnington. This development shouldn’t have surprised us, of course, because we all saw Gordon Brown sign away our rights when he and David Milliband put pen to paper on the Lisbon Treaty. In fact, the Government, ACAS, the unions and thousands upon thousands of angry workers are all entirely impotent. This is European Union law and it’s been confirmed by the European Court of Justice in two separate cases, Laval and Viking. It doesn’t matter how many meetings are held, how much or how loud anyone shouts, there’s nothing anyone in this country can do. We signed away our rights when we joined this prison of nations that is the EU. The only way we can run our economy and our country the way we want to is by leaving the European Union and being free and independent once again.

Thanks a lot for your support

I’D like to thank those who have supported us over the past weeks. First, Win Bond and all her lovely dancers who attended and supported our recent line dancing social event, which raised more than £1,000 and was shared between our group and Tarporley Hospital. Also, once again, the RAOB Club in Northwich, whose Provincial Grand Primo (PGP) for 2008, David Hughes, had our group as one of his charities and raised £1,600 for The Joshua Tree and ourselves. The RAOB Club has donated £4,500 to us over the past 14 months, enabling us to be some way to our target to buy a histoscanner, a new and revolutionary piece of equipment for the diagnosis of prostate cancer. Thanks also to the Chronicle for its support of the Neil Dia-

mond tribute evening on Friday, February 6, at the Winsford Conservative Club, which sold out. We expect to have raised more than £2,000 on the night. GARY STEELE Chairman, Leighton Hospital Prostate Cancer Support Group, Cherry Crescent, Winsford

Send lifeline to people of Gaza

READERS might be interested in knowing about a project to send help to the people of Gaza. After the recent invasion by Israel, leaving more than 1,300 dead and many more injured, the survivors are trying to pick themselves out of the rubble and to rebuild their homes and their lives. Among those trying to send a lifeline to Gaza is a convoy of lorries, donated by volunteers, carrying voluntary donations such as medicine and clothes. This convoy, supported by MP George Galloway, is due to leave London on February 14 and is hence being called “A Valentine for Palestine”!

These people really need this aid. If you would like to help them then please send a cheque written out to “Lifeline for Gaza”, and send it to me at Robinwood, PO Box 135, Whitchurch, Shropshire, SY13 3WX. Thanks in advance. KEVIN STANNARD (by email)

Vics cut all links with ex-chairman NORTHWICH Vics are finally rid of their lame duck landlord after former chairman Mike Connett’s company Beaconet was wound up at a High Court hearing. Beaconet, who had been Vics’ landlord since Connett took over the club in December 2004, was liquidated on Wednesday last week after a petition was issued by Bank of Scotland over a £60,000 debt. It means all ties have been severed between Vics and the their former chairman, who became a deeply unpopular figure with the majority of supporters. Northwich Victoria Supporters Trust chairman Peter Grimes said: “We’re delighted our association with Connett is finally

By Dave Goodban finished and, like most fans, we’re glad to see the back of him. “We’ll never forgive him for what he’s done to the club. People like him should not be allowed in football.” Supporter James Woods, a member of the infamous ‘VS3’ trio banned from the Victoria Stadium by Connett for criticising him, said: “I was never one of his fans and I paid for opening my mouth. “As far as I’m concerned it’s good riddance. We need to heal the splits he’s left, put him behind us and work together to move the club forward on and off the

A £1.5m bid has been accepted in principle by receivers Deloitte Touche, who seized the stadium from Beaconet in October to pay off debts of more than £1m. VICS fans will be hoping the winding up of Beaconet and the end of the club’s association with Mike Connett will mean a brighter future for the club. The man who once boasted he wanted to make Vics “the Chelsea of Cheshire” wasn’t always the pantomime villain. But plenty were sceptical about him from the outset. Former Chronicle sports editor John Buckley remembers: “Connett’s personality achieved the unthinkable of splitting one of the most tight-knit clubs in the country – those taken in by his ‘vision’ and those who weren’t. “Some saw a superb ground finished, promotion under Steve Burr and an FA Cup trip to Sunderland. But it was with someone else’s money. “Now it’s up to the true fans to pick up the pieces.”

Creative pupils enjoy leaf project Woodford Lodge High

TEAM WORK: Year 7 and 8 students from Woodford Lodge High School put the finishing touches to their ‘Terracotta Garden’. SB260109TERRA-04

WINSFORD students joined forces and created an innovative series of sculptures in honour of Cheshire Year of Gardens. With the help of sculptor and environmental artist Lorna Green pupils of Woodford Lodge and Verdin high schools, Hebden Green School and Mid-Cheshire College spent hours creating the outdoor display made up of terracotta leaves. The facilities at the new Arts and Creative Media Building at the college’s Hartford Campus enabled the leaves to be created and fired in state-of-the-art ovens, to create the Terracotta Garden. Lorna said: “I enjoyed working with the students. They produced some beautiful, individual designs.” The leaves will form the focal point of the garden at Woodford Lodge High School.

Survey says 46% of pupils have experienced form of bullying NEARLY half of all children in Cheshire’s schools have experienced some form of bullying, reveals a government survey. It found 46% of children in the county have been bullied either in or out of school and this is above the North West average of 44.3%. The figures come from the annual Tellus3 survey which asked pupils in Years 6, 8 and 10 from 3,114 schools in 145 local authorities in England how they viewed their lives and how good local authorities are at providing

services for young people. The Tellus3 survey is a self-completion survey designed to gather children and young people’s views on their life, school and local area. A county council spokesman said: “We’re not complacent about bullying. We’re taking steps to raise awareness and also point out only 36% of Cheshire schools responded to the survey. “Some of our schools won national awards for their innovative ways in tackling bullying.”

Ex-offenders’ labour benefits communities

COMMUNITIES in Mid Cheshire have benefited from a record amount of compulsory unpaid work carried out by offenders. In all, community payback teams supervised by the Cheshire Probation Area provided 100,000 hours or nearly £575,000 worth of free labour in the county last year. The offenders taking part have all been sentenced by the courts to do the work to pay back for their crimes. Projects included cleaning graffiti, tidying up criminal damage, environmental clean-ups, painting and decorating community buildings and clearing church yards. The idea is to ensure offenders work to make communities better places to live and they often carry out work that would not otherwise be done – and that the public has a say in what they do. The schemes are organised by the Cheshire Probation Area, often in partnership with other agencies. Justice minister David Hanson heard about the success of the community payback scheme in Cheshire when he visited the headquarters. He said: “The scheme shows when people commit offences they have to repair and put right what they have done wrong in the first place whilst giving something back to the community. “In the course of doing that work, they can learn some valuable skills and gain real qualifications through the Open College Network. “If they find a job as a result of making themselves more employable, it lessens the likelihood of them re-offending.” Steve Collett, Cheshire probation area

Pride of Cheshire dented by county survey CHESHIRE is only ranked 28th in a survey of counties with the best quality of life. The Country Life magazine survey assessed each county on the quality of its health services, green policy, schools, social fabric, heritage, landscape and wildlife, plus pubs, restaurants, local food and number of sunshine hours.

It also looked at quintessentially English assets such as the number of village greens, the quality of light and tranquillity, plus the number of residents in Who’s Who. Cheshire has dropped seven places since 2003. Although the county scores highly in areas such as flood risk and food, it failed to impress in categories such as tranquility and light and the

number of village greens. The county’s tourism board, Visit Chester and Cheshire, responded with surprise at its low ranking and questioned how the survey was put together. Chris Brown, Visit Chester and Cheshire’s chief executive, said: “When looking at this survey it is clear to see that the top 11 in this a survey

are from the south of England. “We regard this as very odd and I am sure our other northern colleagues would too. We would question how this survey has been undertaken and what criteria has been used to judge the quality of life.” Devon came top of the list with Hampshire coming in a close second.

Jobs hopes hinge on DIY store project A NEW DIY superstore could create dozens of jobs in Northwich.

DEVELOPMENT: A huge DIY store could be built on land off Leicester Street in Northwich. SB260109STORE-01

Vacant land off Leicester Street has been earmarked for a huge unit, with a retail giant lined up to move in. Homebase originally submitted a planning application in 2004 but a spokeswoman said they aren’t behind the latest bid. Vale Royal planning chiefs told The Chronicle any company can use the initial plans as the basis of a fresh planning application, as long as the proposals do not involved a change of use from the original blueprint. Northwich town councillors recommended the plans for approval at a meeting last Tuesday morning, and the proposals will now be looked at by Vale Royal Borough Council planning chiefs. The town council’s chief executive, Steve Sharman, says the development could bring much-needed invested to Mid Cheshire. “We recommended it for

By Dave Goodban approval, no problems at all,” he said. “There were no objections whatsoever. It’s nice to see new business coming to town rather than places closing.” The area outlined for development stretches south-north from the Venables Road/Leicester Street roundabout to the Witton tip, and west-east from the council depot to Aldi - the old Caffrey’s Transport site. The developers want to create a fourth roundabout exit which would lead to a car park with more than 100 spaces. With Homebase distancing themselves from the move, it’s unclear who is behind the scheme. A spokeswoman for Focus DIY has ruled the firm out. Developers Liberty Properties and Deborah Smith, from agents Turley Associates, both refusedto comment on the proposals.

Don’t smoke – no butts MID Cheshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is appealing to visitors to respect the no smoking policy at Leighton Hospital. Tracy Bullock, director of nursing, said: “As an NHS organisation, we’ve a duty to promote and maintain the health of the community. “We’ve received a number of complaints from visitors who have needed to walk past a smoker in order to get into the hospital. This can be unpleasant and have health implications for the non-smoker.” The hospital has installed three outdoor smoking shelters, and staff will be encouraging anyone who wants to smoke at Leighton to use them.

Civic hall faces demolition plan GOING? Plans to knock down Winsford Civic Hall have been submitted to Vale Royal Borough Council. JK110205WINCIVIC-001

CONTROVERSIAL plans to demolish Winsford Civic Hall and replace it with a new four-storey ‘multi-use’ centre have been submitted to borough planning bosses. The outlined proposal asks permission for the “demolition of the existing civic hall and erection of mixed-use development including public services offices and medical centre”. The application was submitted by Winsford Cross Developments Limited last week, and will considered by Winsford Town Council’s planning sub-committee on

By Dave Goodban Tuesday, February 9. With the town’s new £10.8m Lifestyle Centre due to open in the next few weeks, fears had been growing over the civic hall’s future. But until the application was officially made, Vale Royal had denied there were any plans to flatten the facility, which was opened on December 8, 1967 by the Rt Hon Anthony Greenwood MP. Yesterday (Tuesday) a Vale Royal Borough Council spokesperson said: “Winsford Cross Develop-

ments Limited has aspirations for the redevelopment of Winsford town centre and this is supported by the council. “This application to erect mixed-use development on the site of the civic hall is one of a number of applications that will support this process. “Activity will transfer from the civic hall to the lifestyle centre in April, so this is welcome news for the future of the town centre.” Jonathon Booth from Belfast-based Coogan & Co Architects, which is acting as the agent for WCDL, refused to comment on the plans.

HARTFORD: Ground floor side/rear extension, conversion of garage and pitched roof to replace existing first floor flat roof at 459 Chester Road for Mr And Mrs Boyd. Demolition of existing church hall, build new two storey hall with improved car parking, block off two vehicular access points to car park and form one new access at St Johns Church Hall, School Lane. Single story extension to side and rear of existing dwelling at 24 Parker Avenue for Mr M Winnington. LOSTOCK GRALAM: Garage extension and front canopy at 29 Townshend Road for Mr Kenion. Toseland revs up for Crash gig DOUBLE World Superbike champion and MotoGP star James Toseland will be entertaining fans with his singing rather than his speed at Northwich Memorial Hall later this year. On Saturday, May 9 – the day before he rides in the Thundersprint – the 28-year-old will be performing with his band Crash. ‘JT’ became the youngest ever World Superbike Champion at just 23 and claimed the title again in 2007 before taking the step up to Moto GP. But he is popular for his music as well as his motorcycle riding. He wowed crowds at the BBC Sports Personality of The Year awards in 2007 with his piano playing, and has fronted Crash since 2002. Thundersprint organiser Frank Melling is delighted to have Toseland lending his support. He said: “The Thundersprint is an enormous party and it’s fantastic when our star riders join in the spirit of the event.

By Dave Goodban “You can expect to see JT at every part of the Thundersprint, and this will give fans a great opportunity to meet him away from the pressures of MotoGP.” Toseland told The Chronicle he can’t wait to perform for music and bike fans at Thundersprint weekend. “I am really looking forward to meeting a whole new group of motorcycle fans at this unique event,” he said. “It is especially important to me as Northwich is the home town of my great friend, the late Craig Jones, and he would have loved to see me entertain his family and friends.” ■ Tickets to see James Toseland and Crash cost £15 and are available to buy from the Memorial Hall, or by calling 01606 814640.

Siân on song WEATHER presenter Siân Lloyd will compère a St David’s Day charity concert in Shrewsbury. The 90-strong Bridgend Male Voice Choir will perform at the event to raise money for the Hope House Children’s Hospices at 7.30pm on Saturday, February 28. At the Severn Theatre, on Frankwell Quay, the choir will be joined by Welsh League Championship winners, the BTM Band, and soprano Helen-Jane Howells. The evening will feature a mix of classical and folk music, traditional Welsh compositions, songs from the musicals and traditional male voice choir songs. Tickets cost £15. Book via the box office on 01743 281281 or via the website on www.theatresevern.co.uk.

NORTHWICH BOUND: MotoGP star James Toseland will be performing with his band, Crash, at Northwich Memorial Hall in May and, left, James on his bike.

Society show was a big hit THE Mid Cheshire Amateur Operatic Society’s production of Calamity Jane was a rootin’ tootin’ triumph, writes WHS. Katie Hart shone as the feisty Calamity and Mike Bradley was utterly convincing as Wild Bill. Fiona O’Connor stepped in as Katie Brown at short notice and performed admirably. Nigel Porter’s portrayal of the manic Henry Miller was one of the highlights of the show but Shane Cross stood out in the minor roles. It’s not easy for a young lad to parade around in drag and the rousing applause Shane received was thoroughly justified.

Musical treats plus fun all the way at Phil SAHARAN desert blues and comic capers from a Mock the Week star are just two highlights of the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall’s 2009 listings. Shows pencilled in at the venue include concerts from Jackson Browne (March 28), disco diva Candi Staton (February 20) and David Byrne (April 3), who will be performing songs from the Byrne and Eno era.

Paco Pena’s flamenco-choral commission Requiem for the Earth starts Liverpool’s official Year of the Environment on February 27. The show features guitarists, percussionists, a flamenco dancer and the Sense of Sound Choir. Other world music shows include the annual African Soul Rebels tour featuring Baaba Maal (March 4); Buena Vista Social Club Presents Eliades Ochoa (March 5);

and making a return, the Saharan desert blues of Tinariwen (March 22). The After 8 series of unplugged shows in the Phil’s smaller venue, the Rodewald Suite, includes Tea Hodzic (March 19) and Huw Warren (March 20). Russell Watson will make a return to the Philharmonic Hall’s stage (March 30), and the hall will also be a venue for the 2009 Liv-

erpool Comedy Festival with shows from Rob Brydon (April 28) and Mock the Week’s Andy Parsons (May 7). The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra’s highlights begin today with a Gershwin-inspired programme, Rhapsody (February 4), and With Love From Vasily on Valentine’s Day. Alfa built for Britain

It’s snow joke out there

IT IS the same old story every time the snow arrives.

Like good King Aethelred, Britain is unready. True, we have not had a bad winter for some years and snow is a bit a of a novelty, but TV pictures of this week’s blizzard depicted the same old story drivers standing helpless in a queue of trapped cars, a woman in high heels trying to push an enormous Merc in a city street... the examples are endless. But it seems it is the younger driver who is least prepared to lock horns with Jack Frost. Probably because we have not had a really severe snowfall for years, the recent wintry spell has caught a lot of new drivwers on the back foot, GEM Motoring Assist has discovered. A GEM survey found not one person in the 17-25 year age group who responded, took any specific steps to prepare their car for winter. The survey also revealed that only three in 10 carry a torch, two in 10 carry jump leads and only just over a quarter carry spare water for topping up washer fluid. The mighty ice scraper and can of de-icer were the two most popular winter accessories, but many forgot blankets, high energy foods, shovels and tow ropes etc. Being able to remember some of the harsh winters of the 1960s and 1980s does put it all more in focus, but for those who have not had to deal with such conditions, take an example from the Scouts and be prepared. ALFA ROMEO has taken the gloves off when delivering the performance of the Brera S.

The S has resulted from a demand for more sportiness from UK drivers. The company teamed up with motorsport specialist Prodrive to beef up Brera’s chassis and enhance its sparkle. The result of this partnership, the Brera S, sports coupe has fantastic driver feedback and handling qualities. This is an Alfa Romeo that has been specially groomed for British roads. And it is all the better for it. Which is good because it faces tremendous opposition from BMW and Audi. The treatment has certainly taken away a lot of the long distance tourer and replaced it with excitement, but the Brera S is to me still a superb Grand Tourer, especially the top of the range 3.2 V6 version which is a classic. The Prodrive treatment involves bespoke Eibach coil springs and dampers revised suspension and 19 inch alloy wheels and PirelliPNero Zero tyres. The S version is lighter than the standard model, the front-wheel drive V6 being almost 100kg lighter than the Q4 version. There are minor styling changes, inside and out. And to keep the S just that bit

FINELY TUNED: Motorsport experts Prodrive have given the Alfa Romeo Brera S a distinctly sporting edge. special, just 500 individually numbered models will be made. In addition to the V6, the S range includes the 185bhp 2.2 JTS. The V6 can reach 62mph from rest in 7.0 seconds and reach 155mph with ease. Prices are £24,950 for the 2.2 – which can also be specified with a leather dashboard for an extra £1,500 – and £28,450 for the 3.2 V6, representing a price increase of

around £1,450 over the equivalent standard Brera models. And then there is the noise. The characteristic growl of the V6 has now become an impressive snarl from the four exhaust pipis, thanks to a redesign of the rear silencers. Well done to Alfa Romeo for delivering a car that not only looks and sounds beautiul, but is scintillating to drive

GARY Finley believes his Witton Albion side are good enough to win the UniBond Challenge Cup, despite seeing them lose in the league on Saturday. Albion slipped to their first defeat of 2009 at leaders Eastwood Town but the Witton boss was satisfied with his team’s efforts. The 2-1 defeat at Coronation Park, in front of 512 fans, came courtesy of an Ian Holmes brace comprising a scrappy 30th-minute goal and a freak 35-yard cross-shot ten minutes from time. “It was bitterly disappointing,” said Albion boss Finley. “The first half was really even and in the first ten minutes their keeper made a great save from Lee Thompson. “At half-time I told them that they don’t need to show them any respect and we had a real good go. On our day we can beat anybody.” Debutant John Lawless made an impressive start to his Witton career by giving Albion’s travelling support hope on 75 minutes with a well-taken penalty. Lawless signed from Welsh Premier side Caernarfon after his contract was ripped up by former club Marine for allegedly making gestures at FC United of Manchester fans. “John is a good player and very creative,” added Finley. “You have always got a chance when he is on the ball. “I’m looking at perhaps bringing in another striker as I am continually looking to strengthen the squad.” This Saturday, Witton host UniBond Premier rivals Guiseley in the last eight of the Challenge Cup. And despite seeing his side slip back into the league’s bottom four, Finley is confident. He said: “Make no mistake about it, we want to win the cup. “We’ll be putting a strong team out

Cards deal out a bitter blow NORTHWICH Vics were a shadow of the side that almost beat Wrexham last week as relegation rivals Woking eased their way to victory on Saturday. The 4-1 defeat at the Kingfield Stadium was a further blow to Vics’ Blue Square Premier survival hopes. Frenchman Wilfried Domoraud struck a hat-trick and Goma Lambu completed the hosts’ goalscoring exploits punctuated only by a headed-goal by Mat Bailey on 56 minutes. It was Bailey’s third goal in two games having headed a brace at

Vodkat League WINSFORD United were going into Saturday’s 2-1 derby defeat by Runcorn Linnets without a goalkeeper just two hours before kick-off. Permanent stopper Jamie Mottershead had work commitments while their reserve keeper cried off sick so boss Joe Gibiliru was forced to call on the services of Chris Rowley. But their bad start was soon forgotten after five minutes when John Couch put the home side ahead in front of 162 supporters at the Barton Stadium. United’s lead lasted until the 36th minute when Runcorn full-back Gary Brown scored from 25 yards before Paul Crewe took advantage of an error by Rowley, who failed to clear a ball, and passed the ball into the empty net on 74 minutes. Gibiliru said: “It was very disappointing. The afternoon started off bad for us as we were without a keeper two hours before the match. “We were 1-0 up though and I think by the end of the game a draw would have been a fair result. Nobody would have argued with that. “But the keeper has made a mistake near the end of the game and it’s cost us. Hopefully we’ll bounce back.” This Saturday, the 13th-placed Blues travel to Nelson (3pm).

fort, Vics threw away three points with two penalties conceded in added-on time. The first was missed

but Patrick Suffo made no mistake with the second after Bailey had bizarrely punched the ball in the penalty area. Manager Steve King said: “As we’ve done against all the top teams, we’ve done really well. But it’s still disappointing not to win.” Vics are still bottom of the league and were due to face rivals Altrincham last night (Tuesday, 7.45pm) at their Moss Lane ground. The game was a serious doubt as the Chronicle went to press due to the recent snowfall. This Saturday, Vics travel to Ebbsfleet United (3pm).

BARNTON manager Mick Duckett believes the secret to his side surviving the drop this season is by winning their home games. The Townfield Lane outfit currently prop up the Cheshire League Division One table and their cause was not helped on Saturday by the late postponement of their clash at Billinge. This Saturday, Barnton host tenth-placed Pilkington (3pm) in what is being dubbed a must-win match. “Pilkington are only five or six places above us. They are a bit too far away for us to catch but these are the games you have got to look at taking points from,” said Duckett. James Thomas and James Baldini will miss the next three games through suspension. ■ Lostock Gralam were also kicking their heels this weekend due to a gap in the Cheshire League Division Two fixture list. This Saturday, the sixth-placed Grey Lambs host Warrington Town at Moss Farm (3pm).

Leaders enjoy a stroll at seaside Hockey WINNINGTON Park were taught a harsh lesson by their Lytham St Anne’s counterparts on Saturday. The Northern League Division Two West leaders ran out easy 7-2 winners at home despite struggling Winnington taking the lead early on. Paul Stackhouse drilled the ball into the penalty area for Dennis Topping to find the back of the net. Park then self-destructed with Ric Evans seeing yellow for dissent and the team finding themselves 3-1 down at the break. After conceding again early in the second half, Topping hit his second with a reverse-stick shot following good work from Adam Kueres. But in their search for further goals, the visitors committed too many forward and paid the price of conceding a further three goals. The defeat put Park back into the league’s bottom two with just seven games to go. Other scores: Bramhall 2nds 2 WP 2nds 4 (Hughes 2, Livingstone 2); WP 3rds 4 Bramhall 3rds (Lavin, Taig, Sambell, Sedgwick); Lymm 3rds 5 WP 4ths 1 (Crouchley). This Saturday, Park host Wrexham in a crucial clash at Sir John Deane’s College (2pm). ■ Park Ladies are within touching distance of Cheshire League Division One title after a 3-0 win over Whitchurch thanks to Ellie Capstick, Leona Trimble and Jo Cash. This Saturday, Park will be champions if they win at Brooklands.

Blacks get fired up to win as Park struggle

ROUNDUp

Rugby union

NORTHWICH squeezed past an abrasive Blackburn side on Saturday while over the fence at Burrows Hill, rivals Winnington Park were in celebratory mood – despite losing 32-3. At Moss Farm, the Blacks got back to winning ways but found the going tough against their bottom-of-the-league opponents but eventually claimed a 15-11 win to keep their faint hope of promotion alive. Blackburn took the lead on 30 minutes thanks to a penalty but the hosts immediately hit back with a Jamie Miritana try. After the break, the visitors shocked Northwich with a breakaway try from 70m but this only served to fire up the Blacks talented backline. Steve Campbell hit the line at pace from fullback to score a try which was converted by Matt Bebbington. Blackburn kicked a penalty but Bebbington added one of his own late on to make sure of the points. Northwich coach Kevin Greaves has not ruled out promotion from North West Two for his mid-table side. He said: “We have the ability to win all our remaining games and if we do then who knows where we will be in April.” This Saturday, Northwich host Leigh (2.15pm). Winnington Park had only a Ben Elliott penalty to show for their efforts against fourth-placed Bowdon, who had several South Africans in their powerful pack. The 32-3 defeat keeps Park at the bottom of Cheshire and South Lancs One but it has been confirmed there will be no teams relegated this season (see back page).

Super sisters’ success

A PAIR of sisters from Oakmere are having an unrivalled season in sport! Elizabeth and Victoria Anderson, who attend Queen’s School in Chester, have made strides in lacrosse, hockey and athletics. Goalkeeper Elizabeth, 18, has been selected for the North of England senior ladies lacrosse squad and has also trained with the Cheshire under 18 schoolgirls hockey squad. Victoria is a keen lacrosse player on the National Centre of Excellence programme. Despite being only 14, she has been selected for the Cheshire and North of England lacrosse teams at U18 level. Her talents do not end there as she has been picked to play hockey for Cheshire’s U15 schoolgirls squad and has also competed at national level in high jump and pentathlon.

His single skimmer of 0-8-5 was enough to beat Calvin Tagg’s 0-2-7 roach. Kenny Carter was top rod on Saturday in Barnton and Frodsham AC’s match on Heesom’s Pool. His 5-5-0 of skimmers, roach, rudd and crucian was too good for Chris Hargadon and Terry Middleton. John Cheetham claimed victory in the club’s Wednesday match last week on Heesom’s Pool with 5-5-0 of skimmers, roach, perch and a crucian. Second was Middleton with 2-14-0 of roach and skimmers while Mike Smith completed the frame with 2-11-14 of roach, rudd and perch.

Oulton Park revamp

MOTORSPORT: Oulton Park has undergone extensive development work to the track and spectator facilities. The improvements are part of MotorSport Vision’s ongoing commitment to improving and updating the four circuits under its control. Spectator access to Druids, one of the most challenging corners on the Mid Cheshire track, has been improved with a woodland walk which dissects the large enclave of trees between Druids and Water Tower. The grass banks at Druids have also been completely reprofiled and extensive forestry work has been carried out in order to maximise the views on offer. On the circuit, Lodge corner and Hislop’s chicane have been resurfaced, while new kerbing has been put in at Cascades and Shell Oil Corner. The first major event of the 2009 season at Oulton Park is the British Formula 3 and GT Championships, which take place on Easter Bank Holiday Weekend (April 11-13).

SPLASH HITS: Members of Winsford Swim Team enjoyed success at the North Midlands Championships, held at Macclesfield.

SAVED FROM DROP

STRUGGLING Winnington Park have survived the threat of relegation – without having to win a game in 2009.

SAFE HANDS: Phil Parrott wins line-out ball for Park during Saturday’s disappointing defeat at home to Bowdon. SB310109PARK-03

The Burrows Hill side, currently bottom of Cheshire and South Lancs One with just one victory to their name all year, have been saved by a decision made by the sport’s governing body. The RFU announced last week that there would be no relegation from Park’s league this season due to a restructuring of the league system. Rivals Northwich have also been prematurely made safe in North West Two although the Moss Farm side are eyeing developments at the other end of the table. Park spokesman John Pickering said: “It is a relief. But this is not the way that we want to guarantee survival. “We can’t relax in the last few games because next year we will be looking to recruit players so we don’t want to be finishing at the bottom of the table.” Last week’s announcement arrived by letter from Mike Smith, chairman of the

Rugby union

By Ben Coulbeck RFU North Competitions Committee. It confirmed that due to leagues at level seven, including Park’s, increasing from 12 teams to 14 next season, there will be no relegation this campaign. First team skipper Mark Patterson added: “The emphasis is very much now on moving up the table and getting things in place for next season.” Northwich chairman Sam Naylor said the club had anticipated the announcement but were still none the less satisfied their safety had been guaranteed. He said: “We are determined to finish as high as possible and our pre-season objective was a top-four spot. “We welcome any attempt to increase the quality, competitiveness and professionalism of the leagues and look forward to maintaining our reputation as the team of the town.” ■ See page 31 for the latest results and reaction from Park and Northwich.

Vics clash switched as lockout goes on Football NORTHWICH Vics’ match against Ebbsfleet United has been moved to Kent as the gates to the Marston’s Arena are still locked. Despite the ground’s owner Mike Connett being wound up last Wednesday, Vics have been unable to gain temporary ownership of the ground from administrators Deloitte. Vics owner Jim Rushe told the Chronicle that the success of his consortium’s £1.5m bid for the Wincham stadium hinged on whether he is granted a loan to fund the acquisition. “Not a single thing has changed,” he said. “We are just waiting for the powers that be to tell us whether or not we have got the loan. “All the figures went in on Friday so we are now playing the waiting game.” Saturday’s game – scheduled to be played at Vics – will now be played at Ebbsfleet’s Stonebridge Road ground (3pm). Vics are also considering offers from League Two neighbours Macclesfield Town and Chester City to host their should the sale not go through soon. “They have been very generous,” added Rushe. ■ Deloitte, fixed-charge receivers orchestrating the sale of the ground, confirmed that they were still in talks with the football club and that they were supervising Connett, who is still in attendance and is yet to unlock the gates. Deloitte could not yet confirm whether Vics would be able to play at the ground or whether the sale would be completed in the near future. ■ To see if Vics can get their first win since October see www.midcheshirechronicle.co.uk

Mid Cheshire pupils prove a class act again School sport TALENTED pupils representing Mid Cheshire Schools shone on the big stage on Saturday. Hundreds of pupils descended on Macclesfield for the Cheshire Schools Cross Country Championships and many runners from Vale Royal enjoyed success. Leading the way for Mid Cheshire was Megan Huxley who claimed victory in the inter-girls race. She was followed across the line in third by Hannah Paver. In the junior boys event, 14-year-old Lewis Healey of St Nicholas High School put in a stunning performance to finish second. Zach Bamber finished fourth. Mid Cheshire also scooped a hat-trick of team golds with the junior girls, junior boys and inter girls finishing first overall. The minor boys squad finished third in their team category.
