A message from therev.Rector henry l. hudson

The cross atop Trinity’s steeple is called a “Buddled Cross” because on the three arms are buds that represent growth, new life, and blessing in the Cross of Christ. It is the promise of the Resurrection, and the power of the Holy Spirit to bring new life and strength to the world. At the center of that Cross is the trefoil symbol of the Trinity – our name, and center of our faith. It reminds us of the fullness of God’s presence and power all around us – in creation and the awesome mystery of this world around us; in the human family and beloved community that Jesus redeems and creates in us; and in the Holy Spirit’s moving through us to guide, to heal, to strengthen us. Since 1847 we have worked, prayed, and sacrificed for these goals, and the joy they bring. We gather the people of God in joyful worship, and the music of Trinity is superb. Albinas Prizgintas and the lovely Manon have been a part of our life and treasure of this community for 28 years, and we celebrated his retirement this year, and rejoiced in their continuing commitment to the Trinity Artist Series. Paul Weber joined us as organist/choirmaster, and we rejoice in his skill and gifts. We welcomed the Rev. Kit McLean to our staff with particular responsibility for Education and Formation, growing mature faith in all of us. With Ashley Bond and Ashley Eastham, they have grown our program and outreach to children and youth, young adults, and all ages. With our deep commitment to Outreach and Anti-Racism work, the Rev. Mitch Smith and the Community Ministries Team guided us to partnership with the Household of Faith in prayer, study, and building a Habitat House! Renewing our work in Anti-Racism, this partnership and commitment to training, study, and concrete steps will be a catalyst and witness for healing in our city. We celebrated 10 years of Trinity Loaves & Fishes daily, feeding the homeless and hungry in our midst, and fifty years of service by the Trinity Education Enrichment Program, led by the miraculous inspiration of Alvin Edinburgh! We know that Trinity has been and must be a tremendous resource for good in our city, and a witness to the ever growing power of faith in Gods’ presence with us, reconciliation among us, and promise to be with us always! It has been a great blessing and privilege to serve as rector for these nine years, and I retire knowing that the Cross of Christ will continue to anchor and encourage new life in this community, beloved by me, and beloved of God!

We are Trinity Church!

Christina Carroll, Melyssa Bratton & Cooper We first attended Trinity in 2005 (before Katrina). Bill, our neighbor on Octavia Street, took us to visit. We found the church to be accepting and involved in the community, especially in the period after the storm. The church was supportive when Melyssa delivered Cooper, and he was christened at Trinity. Melyssa has served as a lector, reading during church services, and we have been involved in the Guild of the Christ Child. We especially appreciate the church’s Roots and Sprouts program for the families of young children. We have gotten to know a group of families through this program. We also enjoy our Faith and Fiction class on Sunday mornings, where we meet to talk about a short story. On April 16, we will be married at Trinity, and it could not mean more to Melyssa, a cradle Episcopalian, to be married in her church.

What is Christian Formation? As a ministry area, Christian Formation is an appropriately broad description. So often, we confine the concept of formation to a classroom. However, this is deeply misleading: Christian formation is truly a whole person and a whole life—and lifelong—experience. Since welcoming Associate Rector, Kit McLean as the new head of Christian Formation, our hope is to build a foundation that fosters integration of community and individual growth, one that attends to the spiritual needs of people in every life stage and every stage of spiritual development regardless of age. A main goal is to deepen our understanding that God is not somewhere “out there” or that “church” is merely a place, something we “go to.” Rather, WE are the church: we are Christ’s Body wherever we are, and the health of the body depends on the faith lives of each of us. This is big work, vital work, but it is work that, with God’s help and our commitment and care, can and will bear abundant fruit in our personal and our common lives. In the following pages, you will see examples of Christian Formation at work at Trinity.

Children’s Ministries Our Children and Family Ministry provides spiritual formation and support to children from birth through 5th grade as well as opportunities throughout the year for children and their families to engage more deeply in the worship, life, ministry and activities of the Trinity Church community. Godly Play is a Montessori approach to the spiritual formation of children where children are taught the art of using Christian language - parable, sacred story, silence, liturgical action - thus helping them to become more fully aware of the mystery of God’s presence in their lives. Godly Play is a “spiral curriculum” through which the same core stories are told year after year. Through the retelling of stories at different ages and stages and with different individuals in the circle, we go ever deeper into the stories of our faith, we strengthen our Christian identity, and we trust the Spirit to reveal something new with each telling. We offer three classes: GP1 (3 years - PK), GP2 (K-2nd), GP3 (3rd-5th). Other children’s ministries offerings include: Guild of the Christ Child Ministry Sunday Nursery for children (under age 3) Summer Vacation Bible School Godly Play Teacher Certification Training Acolyte Ministry (4th-12th Grade) Annual Bible Presentation to 3rd graders Sunday School Parent Book Club Children’s Choir Thanksgiving Performance Children’s Liturgy & Christmas Pageant on Christmas Eve Hoofing it for Heifer Lenten Fundraiser & Celebration Picnic

“Godly Play has changed the way our children learn about the Bible. It shows them how they are part of a greater story by allowing that story to become part of their little hearts forever. As a mom, I can’t be prouder FOR being part of this amazing experience for our little ones and ourselves.” - Gabriela Cannon, mother to Heather (7) and Beatrix (4)

Above: The 2015 Trinity Youth Pilgrims at Edinburgh Castle Below: The pilgrims after a hike up to Athur’s Seat in Edinburgh

This past summer, I partook in one of the best experiences of my life, Trinity’s youth pilgrimage to Scotland. On this trip, we traveled to many places including Edinburgh, Stirling, Oban, Mull, Iona, Rosslyn Chapel, and Lindisfarne. In Edinburgh, we visited the Edinburgh Castle, the National Galleries, the National Monument of Scotland, and St. Giles’ Cathedral. After staying in Edinburgh for 3 nights, we traveled to the Isle of Iona. The journey to Iona included two bus rides and two ferry rides. Once we finally arrived at Iona, we learned about Celtic Christianity, sailed to Columba’s Bay, participated in a Labyrinth walk, danced at a Ceilidh, and participated in the pilgrimage walk across Iona. We worshipped at the Iona Abbey and learned about the history of the Iona monastery. After spending five nights on Iona, we traveled to Stirling where we stayed overnight. Our final night was spent in Edinburgh where we attended Evensong at St. Mary’s Episcopal Cathedral. Throughout this trip, the beauty of Scotland and the history of Christianity was inspiring to everyone on the trip. Over two weeks, our group became so close as we learned about ourselves and our relationship with God. A few of my favorite moments from the trip include meditating on a hill that overlooked the sunset over the Atlantic Ocean, and taking a walk across Iona at midnight after the Ceilidh (dance). The journey of traveling to the Isle of Iona was one of the best experiences of my life. I am so thankful that I got the opportunity to go on this trip with the other pilgrims.

Frances, Eric, Eva & Emile Rodriguez Eric and I have been coming to Trinity for around five years, initially participating in the young adults group and the music ministry. Two kids later (Eva and Emile), we’ve come to treasure the endlessly loving and supportive clergy and staff at Trinity who consistently reach out to our growing family. As an artist and musician, we also love that Trinity encourages all of our God given talents and allows us to give back through them as well. The more time we spend at Trinity the more I’ve come to appreciate the extensive involvement our church has in the community, such as Eden House, TEEP, and TCTC, where I interned as a counselor. The infrastructure to plan and execute such projects is no small feat, and our parishioners and clergy undertake these projects with grace, dependability and humility. We feel endlessly grateful to be a part of this spiritual family, that has given so very much to us!

“O God, our heavenly father; who has given us your son Jesus Christ to be our friend and elder brother, Grant that we may continue in his friendship and do such things as will please Him. Bless us in our work and in our play. Make us gentle, generous, truthful, kind, and brave. Keep us in purity of heart, and let the life of our school go on from strength to strength and have its place and meaning in your Kingdom. All of this we ask through the same Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Since 1960, Trinity Episcopal School has graduated students of exceptional academic and intellectual ability. Trinity students are highly sought after by local high schools because of the love of learning, capacity for hard work, and sense of personal responsibility they have developed in their years at Trinity. Trinity focuses on young children. It is a community for the young, where their intellectual and social aspirations are somewhat shielded from the pressures and temptations of high school and the world beyond. Trinity attends to the social dimension. Students learn to navigate a social setting that includes both boys and girls. The Responsive Classroom model helps children to find her or his voice and to learn to listen respectfully to the sometimes very different perspectives of others. At Trinity, faith matters. Although the students and staff come from a wide variety of faith traditions, simple, regular chapel services anchor the day and unite a purpose toward a perspective larger than self. Trinity students are not just good students, they are good people.

Adult Formation At the conclusion of the Bible Challenge, we took on the Gospel Challenge. Our clergy led classes on each of the four Gospels as part of our Wednesday evening gatherings of “Faith, Fellowship and Fun.” We held a Sunday morning class using N.T. Wright’s book, “Becoming the Good News: Why the Gospel is News and What Makes It Good.” Both Advent and Lenten Quiet Mornings were held, as were candlelit contemplative liturgies during Advent and Holy Week. Once a week Centering Prayer began to be offered in the chapel. At least four Bible studies take place each week, and other prayer groups gather regularly. Our hospitality team has been considering ways to reorganize and expand. “Welcoming the stranger” is a critical part of our mission as Jesus’ disciples, and Christian formation often begins with that welcome. As part of the Gospel Challenge, twenty pilgrims journeyed to Israel in February to experience what is sometimes called “The Fifth Gospel.” This was the first pilgrimage of its kind from Trinity, and we plan to incorporate pilgrimage as a regular part of our formation offerings.

Pastoral Care “If you don’t want to change, don’t pray.” - Joan Ohaanneson Pastoral Care and Spiritual growth begin and end in prayer. We ground ourselves every day in Morning Prayer and in sharing our Daily Meditations. We pray for hundreds of people in our midst who commend themselves to our prayers, as well as for our church and the world. To pray is to participate in creation, to offer ourselves in praise and adoration, to appeal to God for help when we cannot help ourselves, and to surrender a little more of ourselves to God’s love each day.

Prayers can lead to action. In many ways the the past year of ministry at Trinity has shown the fruits of

our collective prayers. We provided Christmas gifts to 85 persons in Senior Daycare at Kingsley House. We took flowers, cards, and meals to the sick and elderly from our own congregation throughout the year, especially at Christmas and Easter. We continue to visit the sick, the newborn, and those who are near the end of their lives. We rely on you to let us know when someone is in need of a prayer, a visit, or communion and appreciate your help. Requests can now be made on our website!

Prayer can lead to a desire to know more about Jesus. We challenged ourselves with the Bible

challenge and several Bible studies continued throughout the year. We also had some special opportunities to hear and discuss topics such as “Does Christianity have a Future?”: with Marcus Borg, Joan Chittister, Dominic Crossan, “Embracing an Adult Faith” with Marcus Borg and “Embracing the Prophets” with Walter Brueggeman. These resources are available in the Pastoral Care office to anyone who would like to use them for group discussion.

Prayer can lead to a deeper self awareness. In 2015, we offered two working retreats to that end. Cycles of Life with Carol Fleichmann and Enneagram Spirituality with Sandra Smith.

Prayer leads us in relationship with God and with one another. We started our Trinity Out and About

offerings. These outings are designed to offer fellowship and opportunities to engage in New Orleans experiences - from an art exhibit at Christwood, to a tour of the Port of New Orleans - it is more fun when we can do things together!

I am Trinity Church!

Carrie Wright “I love that Trinity is always looking to help others in the community. The church is not just the services on Sunday. It is important for us to go out in the community and share God’s love with others. I’m proud to be part of a church that continues to share God’s love with the community and doesn’t judge others.” My name is Carrie Wright and I am 36 years old. I am a high school math teacher at McGehee School, a private all girls school in New Orleans. I grew up in New Orleans at Trinity, but was gone for 14 years and moved back in 2012. Church has always been important to me, starting as a youth member at Trinity and serving as an acolyte. I knew that moving back, I was going to be involved in a church, and that Trinity would be my church - but not simply because it was familiar. I wanted to be part of a church that offers a lot of different ministries - where I could be myself and connect with my peers. One of the main reasons I joined Trinity after I moved back was the active Young Adults program. Since I am single and don’t have kids, it’s often hard to find others in church in similar situations. The Young Adults program has provided me with opportunities to make lasting friendships and to talk about God and the Bible with others my age. The Young Adults group at Trinity has been so welcoming, and has helped me to form my own identity at Trinity separate from my parents or from my time as a youth. Ever since being a young acolyte, I have loved being a part of the service as a reader or a chalice bearer. I have always felt it an honor to connect with the parish and to help serve communion on Sundays. I am currently in charge of scheduling the lectors for each service. I think youth ministry is such an important part of the ministry of the church. One of the first ministries I got involved with upon returning to Trinity was the youth program. Youth group was important to me growing up, and I wanted to be involved with the youth and give back to them. I have also been involved in the Trinity Educational Enrichment Program. This is a summer academic enrichment program for 5th and 6th graders from low income families. I have helped the kids build and develop their math skills during the summer. I continue to work with TEEP because of the impact it has on the kids that come. So often the kids just need somebody to believe in them. TEEP allows me to share my talents as a math teacher with a wider variety of students.

I amTrinity Church!

Ivan Griffin I am a native of Slidell, Louisiana where I completed my early years of education. Upon completing an undergraduate degree in voice performance from Southern University in Baton Rouge I moved to Rochester, New York where I pursued graduate study at the Eastman School of Music. Thereafter, I traveled and performed as a featured artist with various opera companies and orchestras around the world, and have appeared in numerous solo recitals. I have also maintained a career as an artist-teacher both in community music schools, high schools, and at the university level. In 2012, after over twenty years of living outside of Louisiana, I returned to my home state, taking residence in the city of my birth, New Orleans. I was reared in a Christian home in which love was ever-present. My faith journey has always been an important part of my life, therefore, wherever I lived I always found a place where I could be spiritually nurtured and sustained. Upon moving to New Orleans I became a part of the ensemble OperaCrĂŠole. One of my first performances with the ensemble was at Trinity Church in September 2012 where I was heard by Albinas Prizgintas. I received a call from him inviting me to appear as a soloist in the annual Messiah Sing Along in December of that year, and to also consider joining the choir. I said yes to both invitations and, on the first Sunday in October 2012, I became a member of Trinity Choir and have been here ever since. The varied musical offerings nourish me both musically and spiritually. It is wonderful to be a part of such a diverse group of musicians, both lay and professional, who understand the importance of the ministry that we offer and give their all to it.

Thank you Raymond Calvert!

Music at Trinity

It is the undying love of music by the people of this parish and the many others who assist and attend Trinity’s music programs that keep our music ministry thriving. Hundreds of musicians, singers, actors, and dancers perform at Trinity annually and we feel privileged to offer them an artistic haven where our spirits can be lifted in joyful celebration of our diverse cultural heritage. Each Sunday, and at various special events throughout the year, the choir’s dedicated singing never ceases to amaze. They are a wonderful blessing to our worship and a rare gift to our church. The Trinity Artist Series continues with concerts of every sort, from Mozart to Motown. Jazz Vespers, now in its 6th year, has become a staple in our Lenten musical offerings; the program has been well received and continues to grow. We are so proud of our annual celebrations and festivals each year, to include Bach Around the Clock and the Patriotic Music Festival.

Thank you Albinas! After 28 amazing years as the organist and choirmaster at Trinity, Albinas Prizgintas moved into retirement at the end of 2015. He remains an active member of our life and ministry at Trinity, continuing to organize and coordinate the Trinity Artist Series, and sharing his love for music and amazing talent with our parishioners and wider community.

Welcome Paul Weber! Dr. Paul Weber joined us as the Interim Organist, on February 1, 2016. Paul holds a doctorate from Yale University, and has served in a number of Episcopal, Lutheran and Roman Catholic parishes, as well as Yale Divinity School and Franciscan University of Steubenville, Ohio. He has served the last three years at St. Martin of Tours in Louisville, KY. From a field of highly qualified applicants, Paul was a unanimous choice!

Women of Trinity Church (WOTC) “With regards to interests and time commitment; there is something for everyone in WOTC” - Joey Brown, WOTC President, 2015-2016 Women of Trinity Church (WOTC) is made up of exactly that, the women of Trinity Church. Each year WOTC provides funds for various ministries within the Trinity community and the communnity at-large. The source of this funding is from our wonderful gift shop, Trinity Treasures and our semi-annual rummage and bake sales. All are led and staffed with WOTC members. We also coordinated and hosted coffee hours and special social events culminating in our Spring Tea which was held at the home of Marley LeBourgeois. It is at this tea where we honored the Volunteer of the Year, Linda Diaz, and the President’s cross was passed on from Mary Funderburk to the current President, Joey Brown.

Daisy & Norris Fant “Those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint. “ -Isaiah 40:31

In 1938, Norris Fant’s family moved to New Orleans from Memphis where they were members of Calvary Episcopal Church. Together with his mother, father and three brothers, they became members of Trinity Church. Daisy was baptized and confirmed at St. Stephen’s in Innis, Louisiana. Norris and I met at the Episcopal Student at Southwestern Louisiana Industrial Institute (now University of Louisiana at Lafayette). We were married at St. Stephen’s and I became a member of Trinity in 1950. Over the years Sunday morning has always been Churchtime for our family - Stephen, Kathy and Donald - where we gave of our time and energy to many activities at Trinity. Norris was involved in fundraising, teaching Sunday School and in later years he has been a Hospital Minister, Usher and Reader. Coming from a small country church to a large city church was an adjustment for me. My advice to new members is to become involved in small working groups here. This will open your way to meet and know many parishioners. And we “old timers” must remember to be open and cordial to newcomers. My experience with teaching Sunday School, being on the Altar Guild, Funeral Committee and Women of Trinity Church (WOTC) taught me this lesson. I am also a member of the Intercessory Prayer Group and work with the Rummage committee. Rummage work opened up for me with Lucy Schwab inviting me to come and help sort, price, and box the incoming merchandise on Tuesday mornings. It is a lovely, caring group and our two sales each year are a joy - a working joy! Henry has always told us to be caring and helpful to all those who come to buy and we try to live up to God’s expectations for hospitality. The money is used by the WOTC to provide grants to many ministries that need a little extra help.

“Trinity is a loving caring community of people and the church has been a source of much comfort and support over the years. We are blessed to be a part of it.” - Daisy Fant

Community Ministries “Whoever does not love does not know God, for God is love.” - 1 John 4:8 It’s been a remarkable year for community ministries at Trinity Church. We built a house, gave away thousands of meals via Loaves and Fishes, completed multiple undoing racism trainings, gave away one thousand turkeys at Thanksgiving, supplied Christmas Presents for 120 families, and these are just the highlights. First John writes that ‘where love is God is, because God is love.’ Community Ministries at Trinity Church is a work of love. It is one of the ways we as a church live into the call to love our neighbor as ourselves. This is a year that has been filled with incredible blessings!

Partnership with Household of Faith In 2015 we began a journey with a church right down the street from Trinity, The Household of Faith. Our journey focused on our mutual faith in Jesus Christ and our common call to serve our community. This journey began with pastoral relationships between Pastor Antoine Barriere and The Reverends Henry Hudson and Mitchell Smith. Over time, these relationships have turned into great friendships. Our churches have engaged in long term ministries such as working on undoing racism in our community, and more short term missions like a Thanksgiving food drive and a Habitat for Humanity Project. Over the past year we participated in blitz builds with Habitat for Humanity in New Orleans East, mutual worship, and Trinity co-sponsored with Household a Habitat House from start to finish in the Old Carrollton neighborhood. This relationship has strengthened both churches. Our mutual focus on mission has been both a gift to each other and our community.

Trinity Church & Household of Faith forged a partnership of love, prayer and service to build a home for one special family.

Along with our mission partners The Household of Faith, over 100 Trinity volunteers young and old marked the 10th Anniversary of Hurricane Katrina by participating in a day of service. The day started on a somber note as Trinity’s clergy participated in various prayer services around the city and ended in triumph as we looked back at some incredible projects that we had completed. It was a magical day filled with Holy Spirit. Stories were told, some tears were shed, and much laughter and work was shared by all. The K-10 day of service was an awesome testament to our community’s resilience and our desire to serve as the hands and feet of our Lord.

On the 10th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, Trinity parishioners volunteered at the Head Start Center on Jackson Ave and at the community gardens in Central City, sharing fellowship and prayer with our beautiful city and its many members.

Vincent Memorial Legacy (VML) For years the Vincent Memorial Legacy endowment has helped Trinity to serve in our community. In 2015, proceeds from VML helped to build a Habitat House, advance the work of Eden House, and support numerous other organizations. Special thanks need to be given to Heather Lonian and Robert Steinfeld and the rest of the VML committee. Their commitment to serve our community by freely giving of the resources that we have been trusted with is an often-hard task - through their leadership much was accomplished.

We areTrinity Church!

Claire, John, Carson Leigh & Jackson Olson Our Trinity story is one of action! John was born in Lafayette and grew up in New Orleans attending St. Dominique, Christian Brothers and De La Salle before heading back down the bayou to graduate from E.D. White high school. John and I met in New Orleans in the early 1990’s at UNO and were married in 1996 in Tallahassee, Florida. After over dozen years there, we settled on a small family farm in the quaint town of Monticello, Florida where we lived for six years. One strange day we decided we needed to do something really different and the place we needed to go was back to the Big Easy! So off we moved, back to our beginnings, but this time with two wild and wonderful children in tow. I hadn’t been a very good Episcopalian in college and so I was unsure of where we should attend church. I browsed the internet and landed on the site for Trinity Episcopal Church. Maybe it was the bold pink color or the plethora of activity and energy that the photos showed? … but whatever lured us, after attending the Newcomers coffee and one Sunday service we knew we were home. Jackson quickly joined the acolytes at the urging of Mother Alyce. Carson Leigh jumped into the Greeters with the nurturing hand of Leila Schumacher guiding her lovingly all the way. Those two have become quite the pair! As a homeschooling family, we have a lot of flexibility and that allowed us to volunteer weekly with the Trinity Loaves and Fishes ministry. The wisdom and generosity of spirit in the volunteers we worked with was incredible. What a blessing to have such positive influences in our children’s lives. I’ve always felt we’ve received more than we’ve ever given to Trinity. We continued to grow our lives at Trinity over the years by volunteering with Vacation Bible School each summer, attending the Wednesday night programs, continuing to volunteer with the Loaves and Fishes ministry and working with the Godly Play program. We also took part in as many of the special offerings of Trinity as we could by attending the free Sunday afternoon concerts, being involved in the Youth Group on Sunday nights, joining in the chaotic fun of Rummage and donating to the WOTC Bake Sales. It’s been an amazing time of growth and love for us. Now that time is coming to a close. After four short years, we find our family called back to Florida to pursue new challenges and dreams. I can’t really express in words what a richness this church family has added to us – maybe it’s been like a good roux in our family gumbo! We have each seen our faith grow by leaps and bounds through our activity at Trinity. We loved the abundance of options for getting involved. Trinity seems only to grow and diversify with each new year. I hope that others will be inspired to jump in and be active with Trinity Episcopal Church and receive the fullness of its blessings.

Trinity Loaves & Fishes Trinity Loaves and Fishes is a mobile food ministry that provides a simple meal, six days a week, to the hungry and homeless. We strive to provide a lunch to the homeless, the hungry, those recovering from disaster, and those volunteering to serve our community and children in need. Volunteers include church parishioners, church staff, friends of Trinity, and out-oftown volunteers.

Above Left: TLF volunteers make sandwiches to stock the truck. Above Right: Trinity’s youth group takes out the TLF truck.

Our ministry goes out on the front line to serve not only food, but love; loving our neighbors as ourselves. To hand a meal to someone who does not know where they’ll have their next meal, and to receive their sincerest gratitude, is a truly remarkable feeling. In 2015, TLF was proud to note the following accomplishments:

31,840 meals served! 1,830 volunteer hours counted! • • • • • • •

Trinity School students assist in preparing bagged meals for Roosevelt Middle School students Restaurant raffle fundraiser boasts one winner every week for 52 weeks! We now serve 12-13 different sites, with 1/4 of the sites geared towards youth Served 325 meals to volunteers who participated in the Habitat for Humanity Blitz Build Started serving at the Rebuild Center at St. Joseph’s after a two-year hiatus

“Doing Loaves and Fishes is the most rewarding thing I have ever done. I encourage those of you who have not done it to do so.” – Mary Christie, parishioner page 25

Trinity Counseling & Training Center For nearly thirty years the Trinity Counseling and Training Center has been a great ministry to folks in our church and the wider community for high quality affordable counseling services and groups, as well as training generations of counselors from all the universities in New Orleans. TCTC has been a vital link to mental health services for thousands. Historically supported primarily by grants from Trinity Church and generous donations, in 2015 major changes were made to the structure of this grand organization, but not to her ministry. On July 1, 2015, The St. Thomas Community Health Center began providing counseling services at Trinity Counseling and Training Center, as well as supervision of the interns training there. This was an expansion of the services of St. Thomas Clinic, and enabled TCTC to expand the reach and scope of its ministry with a solid financial basis. Trinity’s connection to TCTC remains strong. The center remains on Trinity campus; Trinity parishioners receive three sessions at no cost; and our prayer support, and connections continue through the TCTC board. The 2015 Faces of New Orleans Gala was held at the beautiful home of Frances & Calvin C. Fayard, Jr. on October 8th, to benefit the Trinity Counseling and Training Center. Two community mental health heroes were honored, Dr. Jeffery Rouse, Orleans Parish Coroner, and Tim Trapolin, artist.

Medical Mission

Tim Trapolin’s magnificent art was featured in a 12-month calendar, sold in Trinity Treasures as a fundraiser for the Medical Mission.

Medical Mission 2015 Trip Date: Friday, June 5 - Sunday, June 14 Albert Schweitzer, the great German missionary and theologian said, “If your intention is to do good, don’t expect people to roll stones out of your path. Instead, expect them to roll a few stones into it.” Boy, was he right. This is the challenge we face every year as we return to Central America. We must remain humble and accept the many hurdles we face from governmental agencies, the health department, and customs in exchange for the rewards we receive for the opportunity to serve the under-served people of the Nicaraguan countryside. 2015 marked the 23rd Trinity Mission to Central America. Our mission has survived this long because the rewards coming from service within our community of like-minded souls recharges our batteries each year and makes us appreciative of what we have - friends, family and Trinity Church. The impoverished people of Jinotega are not poor in spirit. Our group includes nearly 50 participants including doctors, dentists, a veterinary team, nurses, translators and generalists. Participants join us from across the country with a large nucleus of Trinity congregants. Our group includes resident doctors in training. These doctors work side by side with veteran physicians. This opportunity advances their medical knowledge but also introduces them to volunteerism at a early time in their careers which hopefully, will hold them in good stead throughout their medical careers. We serve the medical needs of about 500 people of the countryside each day, 2500 people and countless animals and people with dental needs by the end of the week. The mission is self-sustaining, being funded by foundation grants and a tuition of $1300 for those able to pay. We welcome applications from our Trinity family. Occasionally I hear the remark, “but, I would be giving up my vacation to go on this trip.” My response is always, I can’t think of a better way to spend allotted vacation days.

We areTrinity Church!

Susu & Mike Kearney We have been lifelong parishioners of Trinity Church, our children attended Episcopal grade schools, and now our grandchildren are students at Trinity School! It has been made very evident to us that the Trinity Church/School model succeeds due to its strong relationship. Having served our church and community through various ministries such as disaster relief (Trinity Loaves & Fishes), medical mission trips to Nicaragua, the Vincent Memorial Legacy, Vestry, Bible studies, prayer groups, DOCC, and EYC, we have benefitted greatly from the many gifts Trinity has to offer. What an amazing community! What an exceptional place to worship and to learn about the life and teachings of Jesus. Our hope is to share these gifts with more and more new people, to be a place where all feel welcomed and comfortable to share ideas and life experiences as we sing, pray and work together.

Thank you Deacon Alyce! Deacon Alyce Jefferson served as the Director of Children’s Ministries at Trinity from July 2006 to June 2015. She continues to serve as the Deacon assigned to Trinity and we look forward to continuing our journey in faith together! “To sum up my nine years at Trinity would be to say I have been richly blessed by the clergy, the staff, and the congregation. I have grown spiritually along the journey and want to thank all of you for your support and encouragement over the years. Now, it is time for me to retire from full time employment as the Director of Children’s ministries and let someone new step in to guide and develop the program for our children. I take with me fond memories of my years and what a joy it is to serve as the deacon with some of the children who have grown from children’s ministries to be acolytes.” - Alyce Jefferson, Deacon

Above Left: A visiting mission group poses in front of Molly’s House. Above Right: Molly’s House

Constructed in 2012, and named after the lovely Mary F. “Molly” Reily, our beautiful youth center is a space for Trinity’s youth to use as well as a space to house visiting volunteers. There are bunk beds for up to 22 guests, a spacious common room, fully functioning kitchen, and on-site laundry facility. We strive to be the “Ritz-Carlton” of volunteer housing in New Orleans while also providing numerous volunteer opportunities around the city. Our goal is to have Molly’s House booked completely during peak volunteering times (winter break, spring break, and summer break). Molly’s House is also used weekly by Trinity’s youth group. The majority of participation in this ministry is by out-of-town church groups and youth groups. Small organizations at local universities also book at Molly’s House for weekend retreats. Groups book, and re-book, with us because of our attention to details and cleanliness, our location within the historic garden/lower garden district, and our excellent coordinator-to-client relationship. We do our best to make sure groups have the best time possible so their trip to the crescent city makes a lasting impression. “Ms. Molly was the most beautiful person in the world, no anger, and I loved working for her. I like what she did for Molly’s House. She made sure all were welcome to the house just as she welcomed so many different people to her own house. Volunteers always have a place to stay.” -Ivory Wilson, Trinity Staff

Kairos Kairos is a volunteer, lay-led, ecumenical, international ministry in which volunteers bring Christ’s love and forgiveness to incarcerated individuals and their families. Its specific purpose is to build strong Christian communities within correctional institutions. Participants in this powerful ministry describe their experiences as life-transforming. Locally, Kairos serves the prisoners of the Louisiana State Penitentiary in Angola and the Louisiana Correctional Institute for Women in St. Gabriel, with a goal of visiting Angola three times a year and St. Gabriel once. Kairos volunteers go into prisons in teams of 40 to 50 to pray, share the love and forgiveness of Christ, share meals, and provide fellowship with up to 42 prisoners (selected by the prison chaplain) on a one-to-one basis. The first visit is a three-day event, with the team teaching a short introductory course on Christianity. Subsequent visits are monthly half-day reunions with the prisoners over a 12-month period. There are many ways to be part of the Kairos ministry, including baking cookies, providing children’s artwork, being part of a prayer chain and making a financial contribution. The team that goes into the prison is trained over six Saturday mornings. All are welcome to attend the two-hour closing ceremony for a Kairos weekend.

Want to know more? Rev. William Barnwell has written a book of stories about the impact of the ministry of Kairos, titled:

Called to Heal the Brokenhearted: Stories from Kairos Prison Ministry International (University Press of Mississippi).

“There was something amazing and reciprocal that had taken place as the volunteers allowed themselves to be conduits of God’s unconditional love for the incarcerated women. Not only did that love transform the recipients, being a witness to the transformation opened and restored the hearts of the givers and those of us fortunate enough to attend the closing ceremony.” - Rose Wilson, parishioner & Kairos volunteer

Eden House Trinity continues its active involvement with Eden House and its work with women who have been victims of sexual slavery/human trafficking. In 2015, Eden House took the steps it needed to to buy its own house. Eden House will soon be homeowners. A big step towards the purchase of the home came from national bi-partisan recognition that proclaimed Eden House to be a place of healing and empowerment. This allowed for the state to award Eden House a Capital Outlay grant. Eden House continues to be a place of healing, a place of strength, and a place of love. I am Trinity Church!

Kriste Buck I started at Trinity over 25 years ago on May 15, 1990, hired by Reverend Hill Riddle. I manage the database for the church and produce the Sunday bulletins, Trinity Tidings, and specialty publications including event invitations, the Easter and Christmas bulletins, and the Trinity Perpetual Memorial and Endowment Fund book. I also manage the website and all e-blast communications, including daily meditations. I am married to Randy and we have two children (Austin, 22 and Madison, 18). Both of my children grew up in the nursery at Trinity. I was very lucky that they attended work with me each day. They were loved and cared for by the clergy, staff and parishioners. It was a wonderful place for them and I will always cherish those memories. Working here at Trinity has helped me to grow into the person that I am today. It also has taught me so many life lessons. I have seen many people come and go through my years here. That is one of the hardest things about my job, seeing beloved clergy or staff move on to new endeavors. I look forward to the next chapter in my life here at Trinity. I know it will be filled with many rewards.

Giving to Trinity

“For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” - Luke 12:34 Trinity is a member supported church, which means we count on you!
