Grass Roots Talk Good Evening and welcome to The Grassroots Stadium for this Spartan South Midland Premier Division tie. Tonight we welcome the players, officials and supporters of Harefield Utd to Tring, and we hope you enjoy your short stay with us. We also give a warm welcome to our match officials- Referee- Daniel Richardson with his assistants-Lior koskas & Nicholas Bloom. Tonight’s match is sponsored by- Keith Hamilton, Keith is our Treasurer and makes sure the club is running on a sound footing. We would like to thank him for all his efforts and support. This is the first meeting between the two sides this season and we plan to play the return fixture on 26th April at Preston Park. Our guests today are presently in 13th position in the league, probably not their best season of late but along with ourselves will be trying to finish as high in the league as possible to give some credit to the season. We had a very disappointing result on Saturday, losing 3-0 to AFC Dunsatable. A thoroughly deserved result to our opposition but not a true showing of what we are capable of. However with such a young side at the moment we are going to have games like these and it will only benefit next season to learn that we have to be at our best for every game. The race for the title continues in the same vein, Ampthill are in top place with Berkhamsted second 4 points behind. Hanwell have lots of games in hand but cannot afford to drop too many points as Colney Heath chase them in 4th -also with games in hand. We travel to Hanwell on Thursday before Ampthill visit us next Saturda , so we can have a say on what happens still.

The Reserves are at Newport Pagnell tomorrow before travelling down the road to Berkhamsted on Saturday.

Finally enjoy the game and give your support to all involved.

History of Tring Athletic: Formed in March 1958 by a group of local men who contributed app. £2,000 towards the cost of the land, fencing, changing rooms etc .Players, Committee members and friends carried out the work while the team played on another pitch. Originally formed for youngsters under the age of 21, the team won many trophies in the West Herts. Div. 3 including the Div. 3 title 3 times in 5 years, often playing against adult sides.

The 70’s/80’s

The Club went through a lean time and it was decided to scrap the upper age limit. Many former players returned which resulted in another successful period in the early 1970’s. Many fine players turned out for the Club and went on to play for professional/senior clubs. In the mid -seventies the Club nearly folded and the ground was sold to the Council. The reserves were disbanded and the First team dropped down through the leagues. It was decided to turn to youth again. This formula enabled the Club to work back through the leagues and by 1986 we were competing in the Premier Div. and the reserves were resurrected.

South Midlands-The 90’s.

In 1988 the Club joined The South Midlands and as a result gained Senior status with The Herts. FA In 1989 we entered in a 3 year ground sharing agreement with Tring Town. In 1992 the first team moved back to Miswell Lane, where the Reserves had continued to play. The side established itself in The South Midlands and gained promotion to the newly formed Senior Div. in 1993. In 1994/5 season, the First Team reached the final of the Senior Div. Cup While the Reserves were finalists in the Apsley Junior Cup for the second year running. In 1996/7 after leading the Div. for the whole season, some poor results at the end found us finishing 3 rd. We also reached the semi- final of the Herts. Charity Shield and won the St. Mary’s Cup beating 5 Senior sides including Isthmian League Hemel Hempstead and Berkhamsted Town In 1997/8 after winning the last 14 games we lost out on the Title on goal difference of 2. The Reserves won their league by 10 points winning every home game. The following year we won the South Midlands Senior Div. Cup and also The St. Mary’s Cup for the second time, defeating neighbours Tring Town in the semi-final in front of a crowd of 350, mostly Athletic supporters. In the league after suffering just one defeat in 28 games, we finished 3rd. The 1999/2000 season proved to be one to remember. £ 50k was spent on new changing rooms and extending the Clubhouse and over 1000 people turned up to watch a Watford X1 refereed by Graham Barber and Graham Poll.. We also formed a third team a Vets side and a Ladies team. The season turned out to be our most successful. Not only winning the Senior Div. by 11 points, we also reached 5 finals. Winning The Herts. Charity Shield, Herts. Senior Centenary Trophy and the Cherry Red Books Trophy in it’s inaugural year. We were narrowly beaten 1-0in The Senior Div. Cup and the reached Final of the St. Mary’s Cup which was never played because of a back log of fixtures. We were awarded the Houghton Cup for achievements in outside competitions. The Management team were also voted Managers of the season. We lost only 6 out of 60 games all season. The Reserves reached the Final of The Intermediate Cup and the A Team finished runners up in the West Herts. Div.

The New Millennium

We continued our success into the new one (2000/01) by retaining the Herts. Senior Centenary Trophy (again beating Wormley Rovers 2-0) and the Cherry Red Books Trophy (Virginia Water 1-0). The Reserves won the League title and a newly formed B Team claimed the runners-up spot. The following season (2001/02) we won the Herts. Charity Shield for the 2nd time beating Letchworth 4-1. The A Team reached the Apsley Junior Cup final and the B Team won the sporting award.

Season 2002/03 – More success followed as we capture the Herts. Senior Centenary Trophy for the 3rd time, to

become the first club to do so. We finished 3rd in the table and won the League Cup for the 2nd time, to make 12 major trophies in 7 years. We were also finalists in the Cherry Red Books Trophy. The A Team finished runners up as did the Under 16's in their first season, the B Team won the sporting award for the 2nd year running and the Ladies had a great run in the Women's FA Cup. For the 3rd year running Darrel Bodimeade won an award for the best playing surface, which is just reward for the tremendous job he does for the club.

Season 2003/04 –Following our failure to secure floodlights at Miswell Lane we entered into an historic alliance with Tring Town to play our first and reserve team football in season 2004/05 at Pendley where lights are already in place. The main focus was to be to raise the funds needed to build a new Clubhouse, the previous building burnt down in March 2003. Miswell Lane will be retained and will be used by our A, B, and Ladies sides. This new arrangement with Tring Town secured senior level football in the town.

Season2004/05 – New season at a new ground in a new division with fantastic facilities. First team finished 6th in

the Premier Division and also won the St Mary's Cup for the 3rd time defeating Hemel Hempstead in the Final. We were also Runners Up in the South Midlands Floodlit Cup Final losing on penalties to Oxhey Jets. Played in the F A Vase for the first time.

Season 2005/6 –The Club entered the F A Cup for the 1st time in its history but was defeated in the prelim round. In a disappointing season the highlight was a victory over Watford in the Herts Senior Trophy with a large crowd enjoying a 1-0 win. Defeat in this competition came at the hands of Stevenage Borough of the Conference league

Season 2006/7-The first team finished mid table after a difficult start to the season. Went 3 rounds in the e.on

FA Cup, losing to Kings Lyn, the biggest side in the competition at that time. The events of the year however came after the season had completed. Mick Eldridge and Ray Brimsom stepped down as first team managers after 17 years. Ron Brimsom also after 16 years decided to hand over the reigns and our Hon. Secretary Ralph Griffiths also stood down after 25 years in that position. A wealth of experience which thankfully will not be lost, as they are all staying on in some capacity.

Season 2007/2008-.The new management team of Phil Casserley and Terry Nightingale ended in glory at The County Ground, Letchworth, with the First Team lifting The Herts. Charity Shield for the 3 rd time.

Season 2008/2009- A reasonable league campaign saw the first team finish in 8th position.

However in true Athletic tradition, it was in the cups in which we excelled, reaching 4 semi-finals. After being 4-2 up with just a few minutes to go, 3 late goals meant the first one slipped away. This strengthened the resolve of the whole team and in a remarkable last seven days of the season, three trophies were gained. Winning the League Challenge Trophy and Premier Div. Cup for the first time and also defeating local rivals Leverstock Green to pick up the St. Mary’s Cup for the 4 th time Ex-player, Ben Williams re-joined the club as reserve team manager mid season and will lead the side in the Suburban League next season.

Season 2009/2010- After last season’s tremendous cup haul, this year the first team finished without a trophy.

However they finished third in the league, the highest position the club’s history so far. With the ground getting the higher ground grading required, the management and players will be hoping to put in a challenge for the title in 2010/2011. The B Team did pick up some silver ware winning The Stanley Rous Challenge Cup at Hemel Hempstead Town’s ground.

Season 2010/2011- The first team finished runners up in The Premier Division. They also won The St. Mary’s Cup beating Leverstock Green in the final and reached the final of The Floodlite Cup, losing 2-0 to Royston Town

Season 2011/2012- With a new Management set up and several new faces in the First team, we were pleased to

finish in the top six and reach 3 cup semi-finals. All our sides performed well, with one of our youth sides going through the league season undefeated. The ladies won their league and reached the final of the County Cup, losing to Arsenal reserves.

- Mixed season with the 1st team winning their initial F A Cup tie at Bedfont and then losing in the next round to Ashford Town after a replay, in the F A Vase we lost at first hurdle to FC Romania. In the League we finished just below half way, lost on penalties to Hadley in the semi final of the Premier Division Cup and were finalists in the St Mary's Cup losing to local rivals Berkhamsted. The "A" Team, under Dave Adamson and James Bevan won the West Herts Peace Memorial Cup for the first time in the Club's history. unfortunately the Ladies team withdrew from their league through lack of players. SEASON 2012/2013

Harefield Utd Club History.. Founded in 1868, Harefield United Football Club is the oldest in Middlesex. The Club has had a number of names throughout it’s history, one of the earliest being Harefield Victoria where the local paper of 1891 has a match report of a 1-0 win over Rickmansworth Rovers, the goal being scored by G Harland. The team was D Collett (goal), C Milton and J Varcos (backs), A Oates and J P Richardson (half backs), C Brown Jnr and G Webster (centres), W.Prickett, G.Winship, C.Armour and G.Harland (forwards). One of the next names was Breakspear Institute FC, who played in the local Uxbridge leagues. The oldest copy of a document is the minutes of their AGM held in 1897. We also have early team photographs of Breakspear from 1903 showing some of the many honours won at the turn of the century. There is also a programme from 1922 when Breakspear and Harefield played against each other in front of 1922 people. The merger with Harefield FC was in 1934 when the team became Harefield United. However, they are one of those longstanding clubs who has had success on the football field but little at the senior level. Harefield United originally played in local leagues, including the Uxbridge & District League, before the team progressed to the Great Western Combination in 1947. During the years spent in the U&DL Harefield United managed to win Division 3, the Uxbridge Junior Cup and Uxbridge Premier Cup. The Club spent nearly twenty years in the Great Western Combination league winning Division 2 in their first year along with the Chesham Cup. The Club winning Division 1 in 1951 followed this. The Reserves had their success during the 1960s in the Great Western Combination Reserve Divisions. Harefield's next bit of silverware came after a move to the Parthenon League in 1964, the Championship being won in the debut campaign. . After two season the 'Hares' moved on to the Middlesex League and it was in that competition that they had their most successful period to date. The league Championship was won on 4 occasions between 1966 and 1971 and the League Cup was also taken twice in that period. 1975 saw Harefield accepted into the Athenian League where they remained for nine seasons. It was period of slow consolidation for the 'Hares' who eventually claimed the Runners-up spot in 1983/84, so earning themselves the right to a place in the newly expanded Isthmian League. United became founder members of the Division Two (North) in 1984/85 and played in that Division for two seasons before changing over to Division Two (South), the Club being caught up in the no-man's land where the boundaries of the regionalised divisions met. Harefield struggled to make an impact in Division Two (North), finishing 18th out of the twenty clubs in both of the two campaigns spent in that Division. However, the change to the South section led to better performances and in 1986/7 they finished in 10th place out of 21 clubs, this was followed by a final placing of 13th the next season and then in season 1988/89 the 'Hares' were 5th. They dropped to a disappointing 12th the following campaign, but the final year of the regionalised leagues saw 7th place achieved. This meant that Harefield had made the cut off

point for qualification to play in the first year of the newly formed Diadora (Isthmian) Division Two the following season. The new division was a struggle for the Middlesex Club and they just missed relegation in the first year, but the next season were demoted along with Southall to Division 3. Despite this set back, the achievements of the Club in recent years have been quite remarkable considering that Harefield is a comparatively isolated location with a small population and consequently small crowds. The record attendance at Preston Park is 430, for a FA Vase tie against Bashley, which the Hares won 1-0 1995/96 proved to be the last in the Icis (isthmian) League. Due to lack of funds to carry out ground improvements, the 'Hares' resigned from the League in November and were allocated to the Spartan League For season 1996/1997The Hares spent one season in the Spartan League before it merged with the South Midlands League. There were two Premier Divisions in the first season, and the clubs, which finished in the top half of each Division, formed the Premier Division for the following season. Unfortunately the Hares only managed 11th position so they had to play in the Senior Division (now changed to Division 1). However, in 2002 the Hares gained promotion to the Premier, finally missing out on the League Championship by just one point. The consolation was beating the league champions, Greenacres, 4-1 in the final of the League Cup. There then followed more success during 2002/03 season, winning the Challenge Trophy, beating Dunstable Town (the league winners) 4-1 over two legs. The Hares also reached the final of the Premier League Cup and finished 4th. The Club also had good runs in both the FA Cup and FA Vase, beating Ryman sides on the way. This success continued during 2003/04 with a SSM Premier League Cup win, 1-0 against Brook House, and getting beaten 2-1 (aet) by Wealdstone in the Middlesex Senior Charity Cup. Season 2004/5 saw the teams consolidate their positions in near the top of their leagues and we had the inaugural season for an Under 18’s side in the Allied Counties East Division Season 2005/06 had it highs and lows. Despite the first team finishing 4th, its highest place since Stuart Leavy took over the senior side the team missed out getting promoted under the new league structure on goal difference. However, the ground improvements needed to get an E grading were completed before the deadline, this puts us in good stead for the future. The good news is that the U18 side not only won the East Division to get promoted to the Premier but they won the Middlesex Youth Cup. To cap off a good season for the Club the Reserves came runners up in the North Division of the Suburban and are now in the Premier.

Sat 8th Mar 2014 Challenge Shield TAFC Reserve team 5-1 Southall TAFC goals: Leo Mullett (2), David Salmon, Reon Thomas, James Cullimore It was an eventful afternoon of odd happenings at Cow Lane for this Shield fixture. The Referee didnt turn up and Chairman Mick Eldridge was forced to don black and run the line and Managers Colin Phillips and Chris Juraszek had the rare luxury of a comfortable victory with none of the usual fingernail biting in the Second half. Here are the highlights 22 mins - Young James Cullimore wins a terrific tackle on the halfway line and Mullet goes off on a run and ends his recent drought with a thunderous right footed drive from the edge of the area. 1-0. 35 mins - Controversy as a free kick is met by a Southall striker who appears to head the ball out of Craig Garretts hands into the net. The goal is given (probably correctly). 1-1 37 mins - Tring immediately retake the lead. Reon Thomas was a on fire and pounced on a keeping error to slot the ball home for his first goal back. 55 mins - Tring are now running Southall ragged. A corner is headed down and Dave Salmon pops up to fire home from 6 yards. 58 mins - Its four as Leo Mullet lashes in a fabulous free kick from 35 yards and unleashes a Bebeto/ Romario celebration on the unfortunate crowd and his embarrassed team mates. 65 mins - the moment of the game as a cross is met by a fabulous leap from James Cullimore who bullets the ball into the net. 5-1. 75 mins - A good day is almost topped when Linesman/ Chairman Eldridge momentarily loses his footing and almost hits the deck but just recovers in time to prevent further embarrassment. A good performance from the Lads to start the Shield in style. Decent performance from the makeshift Linesman too - with Tring Athletic legend Pistol Pete Stilwell assessing and awarding a 7 out of 10 in the bar afterwards. It would have been an 8 but Pete thought Eldridge wasnt keeping up with play very well towards the end of the second half. Team - Garrett, Clark, Harrison (Butler J), Salmon D, Jarvis, Jeffrey B (Donald), Cullimore (Salmon C), Smethers, Mullet, Thomas, Myatt

MATCH REPORT – TUESDAY 11 MARCH 2014 SPARTAN SOUTH MIDLANDS LEAGUE - PREMIER DIVISION TRING ATHLETIC (2) 4

COCKFOSTERS (0) 0

A look through Trevor Gibbs family tree will no doubt find some Teutonic ancestry because that would explain the clinical way he has despatched 4 penalties in 3 days like a seasoned German footballer! Many of us who have played and then followed Athletic for more years than we care to remember can't recall a player converting 4 spot kicks in 2 consecutive games so Trevor has undoubtedly booked his place in the Club's record books. Julian and Ian had the luxury of being able to name the same side that secured a 2-1 away win at Stotfold on Saturday, with 20 year old Ryan Coote keeping his place in the side at centre back where he produced another assured performance. We got off to a dream start when after only 5 minutes Lee Benning flicked on Adam Toone's long throw and Paul Jeffrey was on hand to find the net from close range. Jeffers has recently made a welcome return to the First Team after some impressive performances for the Reserves and his pace, strong left foot and ability to whip in great crosses will greatly benefit the team. Although he seems to have been with the Club for ages (in fact since 2009) he has only just turned 23 so he could become a regular fixture in the team for some years. This was his 3rd First Team goal, his last one was scored over 2 years ago on 10 December 2011. Score 1-0. After this early jolt Cockfosters went close through Kwarme Weekes Jay Rolfe and good play by Jack Seaton and Trevor Gibbs presented Ollie Butler with a sight of goal but the Fosters' keeper Adam McQeeney made a great save with his feet. Paul Jeffrey appeared to be fouled in the area but the Referee turned down our appeals but a minute before the half hour mark he did point to the spot after the Linesman immediately flagged for a trip on Jack Seaton by Kwarme Weeks. Trevor Gibbs calmly stepped up to smack the penalty past the keeper. Score 2-0. The game entered a critical stage as the next goal was going to be crucial. Jay Rolfe sent in a dangerous free kick which we managed to clear with some difficulty and then following a good move down the left Kwarme Weekes whipped over a superb cross that fortunately for us hit Paul Jeffrey and went out harmlessly for a corner. Ollie Butler was showing some deft skills and causing the visitor's defence problems firing one promising effort at the keeper. Paul Jeffrey went on a lung bursting break down the left and his cross was cleverly collected by Chris Vardy who drifted off his marker, but his rasping shot flew just past the far post. A good half for us ended with us holding a healthy lead but our guests were still very much in the game knowing that if they could get a goal back they would be right back in it. Half Time:

The visitors showed their intent by bringing on their leading scorer Adam Ali for a midfield player but the first scoring opportunity came out way when Taylor Collins flick set Chris Vardy free but his lob just cleared the bar. But we didn't have to wait long for the vital 3rd goal, in fact just 6 minutes after the restart. Chris Vardy was sent away down the left and his super cross was met at the far post by Jack Seaton whose goal bound shot was helped into the net by a defender. It was Jack's 4th goal of the season and was a fitting reward for a fine game at right back, where he has settled

well after spending most of the season in the centre of defence. The only down side to Jack's performance was a rash challenge that earned him a yellow card. Score 3-0. A minute after we scored Adam Ali found himself in some space but under pressure from the physically imposing Adam Toone he failed to control the ball and the opportunity was lost. We were now very much in the ascendancy although we still had to be alert at the back as our guests were still pushing forward in search of a goal. Taylor Collins latched onto a long ball and although he struck his shot well the keeper was able to save. A minute past the hour we were awarded another penalty when Ollie Butler was tugged in the area. Trevor Gibbs stepped up again as calm as a cucumber to create a bit of history by firing home his 4th penalty in 2 games and put us into a commanding lead. Score 4-0. After that further substitutions followed and although the game became more open there were no more goals. Cockfosters kept going to the end and we had to deal with some awkward set pieces which by and large we did well. Liam Watson got down well to save a fiercely struck free kick from Adam Ali who went mighty close in time added on at the end when his superb snap shot hit the post. Liam also made some good saves from Jay Rolfe and Kwarme Weeks but these were well within his repertoire. Trevor Gibbs saw the keeper tip his deflected shot over the bar and Adam Toone smacked the ball against the keeper after he had dropped a corner, with George Tomlin firing the loose ball over the bar. Ollie Butler produced a mazy dribble and exquisite chip that just flicked off a defender to safety and right at the end of the game he was just unable to finish off a great cross from Martin Skinner who had been released down the right by a fine pass from George Tomlin. There were no further goals and we ran out convincing 4-0 winners to maintain our good record against Cockfosters with just 2 defeats in 20 games. Full Time:

A great all round team performance and it was nice to see us find the net on 4 occasions to boost our goal difference. There was a nice balance to the team with Lee Benning and Trevor Gibbs doing a great job to give the back 4 plenty of protection. We defended well and gave our opponents few scoring opportunities so there was the added bonus of a clean sheet our 11th of the season. There was also a very youthful look to the side with 9 players aged 23 or younger, which included 4 teenagers. Interestingly the average age worked out to be just under 24, and that takes into account a couple of players the wrong side of 30, but we won't mention their names! That makes it just 1 defeat from our last 6 games so lets hope we can keep this good run going so we can end the season on a high and give ourselves plenty of optimism for next season. But we have some tough games to come so it won't be easy. Team: 1 Liam Watson 2 Jack Seaton (Dave Salmon 62) 3 Stuart Stedman 4 Adam Toone 5 Ryan Coote 6 Lee Benning 7 Chris Vardy (George Tomlin 70) 8 Trevor Gibbs (Capt) 9 Taylor Collins (Martin Skinner 79) 10 Ollie Butler 11 Paul Jeffrey. Stay at home on the sofa and watch the pampered prima donnas of England lumber to 1-0 win in a meaningless friendly against Denmark or get down to Cow Lane to witness a veritable ripsnorter of a game as Tring and Bartons Reserves battled for Second Place in the Suburban League North. Pity the fools on their sofas. From the off Barton looked razor sharp - with a couple of lively forwards testing the Tring back four to its limits. Tring defended stoutly, throwing bodies at the ball in the box to keep Barton out but things were looking ominous. Tring just couldn't get their attacking game flowing at all. Tring slowly got into their stride. Vinnie Iannone robust, holding the ball up superbly, linking with Paul Jeffrey and Olly Butler to start to examine the Barton back line as the game began to ebb and flow. As usual, Tring were looking dangerous from set pieces. An Adam Toone long throw evaded everyone and was scrambled away. A ball was fired goalwards and Vinnie flicked it on for it to glance off the crossbar. Barton picked and probed at the other end but Tring held firm - Ryan Coote his usual excellent self at the heart of defence, repelling the Barton forays with aplomb. At the same time, Mr Johnson of Roseberry Way chuntered under his breath as Rooney was caught offside again and continued his incessant whingeing at the referee. He argued with Mrs Johnson, who wanted to put Eastenders on. On 35 mins Tring took the lead. Paul Jeffery swung in a vicious corner that struck a hapless Barton defender and ballooned into the net. 1-0. Half-Time - Barton Rovers 0 Tring Athletic Res 1 (England 0 Denmark 0) The Second Half continued in the same vein. Vinnie Iannone had somehow survived the half time interval but Ryan Caterer didnt and Chris Clark replaced him. Barton were on top but Tring were standing firm, resolute. Dave Salmon marshalling his troops in combat. Barton couldn't create a chance of note. Mr Johnson was drifting off on his sofa at the lacklustre showing on his TV Screen. Mrs Johnson had gone to bed. On 66 mins, the dam broke and Barton equalised. Barton got in down the left and the cross evaded the Tring defence and a Barton striker shinned it in. 1-1. Surely Tring would now fold and fall apart under the pressure? Not on your life. Salmon roused them again and, from nowhere, Tring took the game to their opponents. Paul Jeffrey fired a shot - it slipped from the grasp of the keeper. A prostrate Iannone just couldnt poke it home. The lads were on the up. On 77 mins came the magical moment. Trevor Gibbs fed Jeffers expertly on the left. After 3 months, Jeffers is now approaching reasonable levels of match fitness and he took off down the left - leaving the full back in his wake. He got to the bye line and fired the ball across the box. Goldenboy Olly Butler was coming round the back and he thundered the ball into the net showing fantastic composure and technique. 2-1. Goal of the Season. Barton bounced back - this was a cracker of a game - but Tring were not to be denied and they ground out a fine win against Chris Juraseks old team to move into second place in the League. Who cares what happened at Wembley? Team - Garrett, Tomlin (Smethers) , Jarvis, Salmon D, Coote, Toone, Caterer (Clark), Gibbs, Iannone, Butler O, Jeffery P. Subs not used - Cullimore, Harrison, Elliot.
