Grass Roots Talk Good Evening and welcome to The Grassroots Stadium for this Spartan South Midland Premier Division match Today we welcome the players, officials and supporters of Harefield Utd to Tring, and we hope you enjoy your short stay with us. We also give a warm welcome to our match officials- Referee- Mr.J.Bloxham- and his assistants-Mr.I.Walshe and Mr.G.Mathias

Today’s match is sponsored by- David Foskett and we would like to thank him for his generous support. David was our club captain for many years making over 750 appearances for the club. He should be part of the team to take on a Watford former players side here on September 28th. Details of the sides will be made available soon so please come along for a bit of nostalgia and give your support. On Tuesday we continued our great winning run which has taken us to the top of the table. A 2-1 win at Hillingdon Borough gave us a 5th straight win. This result was gained by some great team effort and belief and showed what can be achieved when everyone is totally committed to the cause. Today will be a tough encounter as Harefield are also going well and have some seasoned players in their side. The reserves once again got a good result last week, winning 2-1 at Corinthian Casuals. Colin and Chris and the boys are surpassing all expectations in a league where they are playing reserve sides of teams at a much higher level. The A and B teams started last week and although both sides lost, they put in good performances. Especially The A Team who fielded quite a few youth team players in what was their first taste of adult football. The under 18's drew with Ampthill Town but the under 15's went down 7-1 to a top quality side. No mid-week game next week but The first team are at home again next Saturday to Oxhey Jets before a trip to Stoney Stratford the following Tuesday in The Challenge Trophy Finally enjoy the game and give your support to all involved.

History of Tring Athletic: Formed in March 1958 by a group of local men who contributed app. £2,000 towards the cost of the land, fencing, changing rooms etc .Players, Committee members and friends carried out the work while the team played on another pitch. Originally formed for youngsters under the age of 21, the team won many trophies in the West Herts. Div. 3 including the Div. 1 title 3 times in 5 years, often playing against adult sides.

The 70’s/80’s The Club went through a lean time and it was decided to scrap the upper age limit. Many former players returned which resulted in another successful period in the early 1970’s. Many fine players turned out for the Club and went on to play for professional/senior clubs. In the mid -seventies the Club nearly folded and the ground was sold to the Council. The reserves were disbanded and the First team dropped down through the leagues. It was decided to turn to youth again. This formula enabled the Club to work back through the leagues and by 1986 we were competing in the Premier Div. and the reserves were resurrected.

South Midlands-The 90’s. In 1988 the Club joined The South Midlands and as a result gained Senior status with The Herts. FA In 1989 we entered in a 3 year ground sharing agreement with Tring Town. In 1992 the first team moved back to Miswell Lane, where the Reserves had continued to play. The side established itself in The South Midlands and gained promotion to the newly formed Senior Div. in 1993. In 1994/5 season, the First Team reached the final of the Senior Div. Cup While the Reserves were finalists in the Apsley Junior Cup for the second year running. In 1996/7 after leading the Div. for the whole season, some poor results at the end found us finishing 3 rd. We also reached the semi- final of the Herts. Charity Shield and won the St. Mary’s Cup beating 5 Senior sides including Isthmian League Hemel Hempstead and Berkhamsted Town In 1997/8 after winning the last 14 games we lost out on the Title on goal difference of 2. The Reserves won their league by 10 points winning every home game. The following year we won the South Midlands Senior Div. Cup and also The St. Mary’s Cup for the second time, defeating neighbours Tring Town in the semi-final in front of a crowd of 350, mostly Athletic supporters. In the league after suffering just one defeat in 28 games, we finished 3rd. The 1999/2000 season proved to be one to remember. £ 50k was spent on new changing rooms and extending the Clubhouse and over 1000 people turned up to watch a Watford X1 refereed by Graham Barber and Graham Poll.. We also formed a third team a Vets side and a Ladies team. The season turned out to be our most successful. Not only winning the Senior Div. by 11 points, we also reached 5 finals. Winning The Herts. Charity Shield, Herts. Senior Centenary Trophy and the Cherry Red Books Trophy in it’s inaugural year. We were narrowly beaten 1-0in The Senior Div. Cup and the reached Final of the St. Mary’s Cup which was never played because of a back log of fixtures. We were awarded the Houghton Cup for achievements in outside competitions. The Management team were also voted Managers of the season. We lost only 6 out of 60 games all season. The Reserves reached the Final of The Intermediate Cup and the A Team finished runners up in the West Herts. Div.

The New Millennium

We continued our success into the new one (2000/01) by retaining the Herts. Senior Centenary Trophy (again beating Wormley Rovers 2-0) and the Cherry Red Books Trophy (Virginia Water 1-0). The Reserves won the League title and a newly formed B Team claimed the runners-up spot. The following season (2001/02) we won the Herts. Charity Shield for the 2nd time beating Letchworth 4-1. The A Team reached the Apsley Junior Cup final and the B Team won the sporting award.

Season 2002/03 – More success followed as we capture the Herts. Senior Centenary Trophy for the 3rd time, to

become the first club to do so. We finished 3rd in the table and won the League Cup for the 2nd time, to make 12 major trophies in 7 years. We were also finalists in the Cherry Red Books Trophy. The A Team finished runners up as did the Under 16's in their first season, the B Team won the sporting award for the 2nd year running and the Ladies had a great run in the Women's FA Cup. For the 3rd year running Darrel Bodimeade won an award for the best playing surface, which is just reward for the tremendous job he does for the club.

Season 2003/04 –Following our failure to secure floodlights at Miswell Lane we entered into an historic alliance with Tring Town to play our first and reserve team football in season 2004/05 at Pendley where lights are already in place. The main focus was to be to raise the funds needed to build a new Clubhouse, the previous building burnt down in March 2003. Miswell Lane will be retained and will be used by our A, B, and Ladies sides. This new arrangement with Tring Town secured senior level football in the town.

Season2004/05 – New season at a new ground in a new division with fantastic facilities. First team finished 6th in the Premier Division and also won the St Mary's Cup for the 3rd time defeating Hemel Hempstead in the Final. We were also Runners Up in the South Midlands Floodlit Cup Final losing on penalties to Oxhey Jets. Played in the F A Vase for the first time.

Season 2005/6 –The Club entered the F A Cup for the 1st time in its history but was defeated in the prelim round. In a disappointing season the highlight was a victory over Watford in the Herts Senior Trophy with a large crowd enjoying a 1-0 win. Defeat in this competition came at the hands of Stevenage Borough of the Conference league

Season 2006/7-The first team finished mid table after a difficult start to the season. Went 3 rounds in the e.on FA Cup, losing to Kings Lyn, the biggest side in the competition at that time. The events of the year however came after the season had completed. Mick Eldridge and Ray Brimsom stepped down as first team managers after 17 years. Ron Brimsom also after 16 years decided to hand over the reigns and our Hon. Secretary Ralph Griffiths also stood down after 25 years in that position. A wealth of experience which thankfully will not be lost, as they are all staying on in some capacity.

Season 2007/2008-.The new management team of Phil Casserley and Terry Nightingale ended in glory at The County Ground, Letchworth, with the First Team lifting The Herts. Charity Shield for the 3 rd time.

Season 2008/2009- A reasonable league campaign saw the first team finish in 8th position. However in true Athletic tradition, it was in the cups in which we excelled, reaching 4 semi-finals. After being 4-2 up with just a few minutes to go, 3 late goals meant the first one slipped away. This strengthened the resolve of the whole team and in a remarkable last seven days of the season, three trophies were gained. Winning the League Challenge Trophy and Premier Div. Cup for the first time and also defeating local rivals Leverstock Green to pick up the St. Mary’s Cup for the 4 th time Ex-player, Ben Williams re-joined the club as reserve team manager mid season and will lead the side in the Suburban League next season.

Season 2009/2010- After last season’s tremendous cup haul, this year the first team finished without a trophy. However they finished third in the league, the highest position the club’s history so far. With the ground getting the higher ground grading required, the management and players will be hoping to put in a challenge for the title in 2010/2011. The B Team did pick up some silver ware winning The Stanley Rous Challenge Cup at Hemel Hempstead Town’s ground.

Season 2010/2011- The first team finished runners up in The Premier Division. They also won The St. Mary’s Cup beating Leverstock Green in the final and reached the final of The Floodlite Cup, losing 2-0 to Royston Town

Season 2011/2012- With a new Management set up and several new faces in the First team, we were pleased to finish in the top six and reach 3 cup semi-finals. All our sides performed well, with one of our youth sides going through the league season undefeated. The ladies won their league and reached the final of the County Cup, losing to Arsenal reserves.

- Mixed season with the 1st team winning their initial F A Cup tie at Bedfont and then losing in the next round to Ashford Town after a replay, in the F A Vase we lost at first hurdle to FC Romania. In the League we finished just below half way, lost on penalties to Hadley in the semi final of the Premier Division Cup and were finalists in the St Mary's Cup losing to local rivals Berkhamsted. The "A" Team, under Dave Adamson and James Bevan won the West Herts Peace Memorial Cup for the first time in the Club's history. Unfortunately the Ladies team withdrew from their league through lack of players. SEASON 2012/2013

SEASON 2013/2014 -First team had a good run in The FA Vase and finished mid-table. Reserves finished runners up on goal difference and won promotion to the Premier Division. Club purchased the Free-Hold of the ground and second pitch to ensure future football in the town.

Club History Founded in 1868 Harefield United Football Club is the oldest in Middlesex. The Club has had a number of names throughout it’s history, one of the earliest being Harefield Victoria where the local paper of 1891 has a match report of a 1-0 win over Rickmansworth Rovers, the goal being scored by G Harland. The team was D Collett (goal), C Milton and J Varcos (backs), A Oates and J P Richardson (half backs), C Brown Jnr and G Webster (centres), W Prickett, G Winship, C Armour and G Harland (forwards). One of the next names was Breakspear Institute FC, who played in the local Uxbridge leagues. The oldest copy of a document is the minutes of their AGM held in 1897. We also have early team photographs of Breakspear from 1903 showing some of the many honours won at the turn of the century. There is also a programme from 1922 when Breakspear and Harefield played against each other in front of 1922 people. The merger with Harefield FC was in 1934 when the team became Harefield United. However, they are one of those longstanding clubs who has had success on the football field but little at the senior level. Harefield United originally played in local leagues, including the Uxbridge & District League, before the team progressed to the Great Western Combination in 1947. During the years spent in the U&DL Harefield United managed to win Division 3, the Uxbridge Junior Cup and Uxbridge Premier Cup. The Club spent nearly twenty years in the Great Western Combination league winning Division 2 in their first year along with the Chesham Cup. The Club winning Division 1 in 1951 followed this. The Reserves had their success during the 1960s in the Great Western Combination Reserve Divisions. Harefield's next bit of silverware came after a move to the Parthenon League in 1964, the Championship being won in the debut campaign. . After two season the 'Hares' moved on to the Middlesex League and it was in that competition that they had their most successful period to date. The league Championship was won on 4 occasions between 1966 and 1971 and the League Cup was also taken twice in that period. 1975 saw Harefield accepted into the Athenian League where they remained for nine seasons. It was period of slow consolidation for the 'Hares' who eventually claimed the Runners-up spot in 1983/84, so earning themselves the right to a place in the newly expanded Isthmian League. United became founder members of the Division Two (North) in 1984/85 and played in that Division for two seasons before changing over to Division Two (South), the Club being caught up in the no-man's land where the boundaries of the regionalised divisions met. Harefield struggled to make an impact in Division Two (North), finishing 18th out of the twenty clubs in both of the two campaigns spent in that Division. However, the change to the South section led to better performances and in 1986/7 they finished in 10th place out of 21 clubs, this was followed by a final placing of 13th the next season and then in season 1988/89 the 'Hares' were 5th. They dropped to a disappointing 12th the following campaign, but the final year of the regionalised

leagues saw 7th place achieved. This meant that Harefield had made the cut off point for qualification to play in the first year of the newly formed Diadora (Isthmian) Division Two the following season. The new division was a struggle for the Middlesex Club and they just missed relegation in the first year, but the next season were demoted along with Southall to Division 3. Despite this set back, the achievements of the Club in recent years have been quite remarkable considering that Harefield is a comparatively isolated location with a small population and consequently small crowds. The record attendance at Preston Park is 430, for a FA Vase tie against Bashley, which the Hares won 1-0. 1995/96 proved to be the last in the Icis (isthmian) League. Due to lack of funds to carry out ground improvements, the 'Hares' resigned from the League in November and were allocated to the Spartan League for season 1996/97. The Hares spent one season in the Spartan League before it merged with the South Midlands League. There were two Premier Divisions in the first season, and the clubs, which finished in the top half of each Division, formed the Premier Division for the following season. Unfortunately the Hares only managed 11th position so they had to play in the Senior Division (now changed to Division 1). However, in 2002 the Hares gained promotion to the Premier, finally missing out on the League Championship by just one point. The consolation was beating the league champions, Greenacres, 4-1 in the final of the League Cup. There then followed more success during 2002/03 season, winning the Challenge Trophy, beating Dunstable Town (the league winners) 4-1 over two legs. The Hares also reached the final of the Premier League Cup and finished 4th. The Club also had good runs in both the FA Cup and FA Vase, beating Ryman sides on the way. This success continued during 2003/04 with a SSM Premier League Cup win, 1-0 against Brook House, and getting beaten 2-1 (aet) by Wealdstone in the Middlesex Senior Charity Cup. Season 2004/5 saw the teams consolidate their positions in near the top of their leagues and we had the inaugural season for a U18 side in the Allied Counties East division. Season 2005/06 had it highs and lows. Despite the first team finishing 4th, its highest place since Stuart Leavy took over the senior side the team missed out getting promoted under the new league structure on goal difference. However, the ground improvements needed to get an E grading were completed before the deadline, this puts us in good stead for the future. The good news is that the U18 side not only won the East Division to get promoted to the Premier but they won the Middlesex Youth Cup. To cap off a good season for the Club the Reserves came runners up in the North Division of the Suburban and are now in the Premier. .

Corinthian Casuals Reserves 1-2 Tring Athletic Reserves LOCAL LADS PRODUCE THE GOODS Saturday was a day for heroes and the local lads showed their credentials on Saturday with a fine and thoroughly deserved win over Corinthian Casuals - who had held Sutton United to a draw on the previous Wednesday. Similar to the Glasgow Celtic side that won the European Cup in 1967, every member of the squad is from within a 15 mile radius of Cow Lane and the squad have forged a similar sense of identity. They tore into their opponents from the kick off and Sam Joliffe had 2 half chances to score but fluffed his lines. Alex Groom was proving to be a real handful and Tring took the lead through him on 25 mins. Casuals were deceived by a ball over the top and Groom latched onto it - lobbing the keeper and following up to finish off his own handy work. 0-1. Ten minutes later it was 1 each. An uncharacteristic howler from Dan Steadman allowed the Casuals forward in to level it up. Tring were unperturbed and finished the half on the offensive. Reon Thomas was sent through but cut back instead of shooting. Ryan Caterer was sent through but had a "Weston Super" mare and blazed over. Half Time - Casuals 1 TAFC 1 The lads knew that the game was there for the taking if they could seize the initiative. Seize it they did. Concerted pressure produced a flurry of corners and from one of these they grabbed the winner. The ball was half cleared and Sam Joliffe clipped the ball back into the box. Local Legend James Butler peeled off his marker and bulleted a header home to sent Tring's travelling army (Tony Stedman) wild with delight. Still they pressed - spurred on by the Dogs of War, Luke Dunstan and Tom Cullimore in midfield. Dunstan wriggled free but had his shot well saved. Could the lads hang on? You bet - but there was time for some late drama. Following a 90th minute corner a piledriver of a Casuals shot was sent goalwards but another local hero, Stuart Stedman, threw himself onto the ball and Craig Garrett saved the follow up. The minibus journey home was a happy one. Team - Garrett, Stedman, Harrison, Dunstan, Butler, Steadman, Caterer (Seaton), Cullimore T, Groom, Joliffe, Thomas (Tabi).

Tue 9th Sep 2014 League Hillingdon Borough 1-2 TAFC First team Athletic score a dramatic 92nd minute winner to record their 5th consecutive win. Tring started brightly yet again but this time couldn't establish an early lead despite efforts from Taylor Collins & Chris Vary being kept out by the home custodian. Shortly after Matt Evans was called into action holding up a forward before Chris Salmon could clear. A 32nd minute Greg Deer free kick found the head of Chris Salmon at the far post who put wide but then the skipper was soon back to clear a dangerous cross from our own box. After a spell of end to end play, the home side took a 42 minute lead with a scrappy goal when Tring failed to clear their lines. HT - HBFC 1-0 TAFC Again Tring came out of the dressing room fastest. Taylor Collins' volley was saved in the 1st minute of the 2nd half with McManus shooting over during the next attack. Greg Deer had a shot blocked before Chris Salmon went even closer than before as his header shaved the post after great work from Ryan Sturges. Tring continued to ramp up the pressure with a good shout for a penalty turned down and Vardy shooting narrowly wide. In the 73rd minute the home defence cracked. Taylor Collins crossed for Chris Vardy to score his 6th of the season and level things up. Tring pressed for a winner, Collins set up King who had his shot blocked and Athletic probably thought the their chance had gone as Salmon's 91st minute shot was also blocked. However in the second minute of added time Kevin McManus went on a great run down the left and crossed for Stewart King to side foot home at the near post for a very late winner. Full time HBFC 1-2 TAFC

Team: Matt Evans, Michael Green, Chris Salmon, Adam Toone, Kevin McManus, Ryan Sturges, Trevor Gibbs (Ryan McMahon 72 mins) Greg Deer, Sonny Bailey-Aird (Stewart King 61 mins) , Taylor Collins Subs: Butler, Joliffe att 32

League TAFC Youth Team 1-1 Ampthill Town TAFC goals: Ben Seaton Wednesday 3rd September saw Tring Athletics newly formed Under 18 Squad entertain Ampthill Town at the Grass Roots Stadium on the opening night of the new SCFYL season. The match began in the expected highly charged and frantic manner with Tring coming closest in the early exchanges when a goal bound effort was cleared off the visitor’s line. The game then settled down into an evenly fought contest with both teams having a fair share of possession without really causing too much damage in their opponent’s box. Tring Athletics back four of Wills, Stacey, Stroud and skipper McCormack looked solid and grew in confidence as the game progressed and the introduction of Phillips did not disturb the balance or dynamics of the defensive unit and all can be pleased with their night’s work! In the final stages of the first half, Tring started to create 1 or 2 chances with the busy front-runner Howe causing a few problems and he was unlucky not to open his account for the season. Half-Time 0-0 Tring came out for the second half full of belief that they could get something out of the game and began creating chances straight from the restart. For the first 10 minutes the home team dominated possession with Hogg in particularly giving the visitors a few problems to deal with. Football though is a cruel game and when you don’t convert your chances you are always open to the “sucker punch”. Ampthill having “weathered the storm” and most would agree, against the run of play, steered home the opening goal of the contest to make it 0-1 to the visitors. Having been together for just 2 months as a squad, Tring needed to show their strength and character as they went in search of the equaliser. The home team now began to lay siege on their opponent’s goal with some quality ball from both free kicks and corners being delivered by Howe, Seaton and Fitzgerald. Just as frustration was beginning to mount from squandering so many chances from these deliveries, Naylor directing the ball towards goal saw it deflect off Seaton into the net and the latter laying claim to the goal. This was now the golden opportunity to go on and win the match with Foxcroft having the best chance with a header that went fractionally wide, the game finally ending in a 1-1 draw. On reflection, most of the Tring players left the stadium on Wednesday evening feeling that they should have won the game and instead of gaining 1 point they had dropped 2 from this fixture but should take heart from a good collective first performance! Star Man* - Harry Stroud This was the squad’s first outing at this level of football and they performed really well. However, there is still a long way to go and team and individual performances are still very much a work in progress. Individuals must start to eradicate bad habits such as giving the ball away cheaply and turning into trouble to name but two, if we are going to be a creditable force in this division

WE GO TOP OF THE TABLE TRING ATHLETIC 2

LEVERSTOCK GREEN 0

Sat 6/9/14

A Herculean performance from the players saw us win the 57th local derby against our close rivals Leverstock Green with the added bonus that the 3 points gained took us to the top of the South Midlands Premier Division. There is still a long way to go and teams below have games in hand but the last 2 weeks has seen a tremendous transformation following 4 wins on the bounce that thrust us up 17 places to the top. But this was no routine victory as we were reduced to 10 players eight minutes before the break when Greg Deer was sent off. Although a goal ahead at that stage we faced an uphill struggle against a strong Green side who had lost only one of the 9 games played so far. But we showed tremendous character to keep out our opponents and then matters were evened up 18 minutes into the second period when Green also had a player dismissed. It has been noticeable that in recent games we have taken an early lead and we did so again on Saturday. Only 5 minutes had gone when Stewart King took Chris Salmon's pass in his stride and then spectacularly lobbed the keeper from 30 yards to score. It was a superb finish and its sods law that Kingy has scored 3 goals in the last 2 games against his old club. Score 1-0. A few minutes later we nearly doubled our score when Captain Chris Salmon latched on a long throw to send his header against the far upright. Green retaliated with shots from Jimmy Talbot and Mark Woolley but neither effort was on target. Stewart King appeared to be pulled down from behind in the area but the Referee awarded a free kick just outside. We had a narrow escape when Matt Evans just failed to reach a cross but fortunately Adam Toone was on hand to put the ball behind for a corner which came to nothing. For those of us of an older persuasion Adam looks and plays like Jamie McBeath who was a key player in our great side that won many trophies around the Millennium. Paul Somers managed to get behind our defence, something Green failed to do very often, but his shot from close to the bye line was easily collected at the near post by Matt Evans. We were rocked when key midfielder Greg Deer was given his marching orders following the receipt of a second Yellow Card but we reorganised well and managed to keep Green at bay until half time to keep our slim one goal lead in tact. It has to be said that this was a harsh decision (as was the later dismissal of a Green player) and with 8 yellows and 2 reds shown it gives the false impression that this was a dirty game. But for a derby match this was a fairly innocuous contest and a more cautious approach would have been more appropriate. Half Time:

Green came out for the second period in a determined mood to made use of their extra man but despite dominating possession they failed to make their advantage count as they time and again came up short against our solid defence. But the odds shifted back to evens when Green full back Damien Cruickshank received the same fate as Greg Deer in the 63rd minute to make it 10 a side.

Taylor Collins had come on for Stewart King and the teenager was soon in the thick of it shooting straight at the keeper after good play by Sonny Bailey-Aird. Matt Evans had not been overly stretched but Paul Somers and Callum Wright forced him to get down smartish to save firmly hit shots. Ollie Butler came off the bench in the 71st minute to replace Ryan Sturges who had run himself into the ground and it must have acted as a catalyst because a minute later we score a vital second goal. Michael Green was the instigator swinging over a super cross to the far post to find Sonny Bailey-Arid who knocked the ball back across goal for Taylor Collins to finish off from close range for his 5th goal of the season. Score 2-0. Obviously buoyed his goal Taylor intercepted a poor pass then thumped a shot from outside the box just wide. Green needed a way back into the game in which they had created few scoring opportunities and it arrived with 15 minutes to go when Callum Wright sent over a superb cross but his colleague Jimmy Talbot wastefully stabbed his shot well wide. It was to be Green's last real sight of goal and we would have added to our tally had Kieran Jimmy not saved a shot from Chris Vardy as he charged in on goal from a Taylor Collins pass and then the keeper did even better to tip a rasping shot from Trevor Gibbs onto the bar. Further half chances came our way with Taylor blasting a shot well over then Chris Vardy fired a fierce shot that bounced off the keeper's chest. Our final substitution saw Paul Jeffrey come on for Sonny Bailey-Aird and he announced his arrival with a storming run down the wing with his cross forcing a corner from which Chris Salmon was just unable to get high enough to direct his header on target. But there were no more goals and we claimed a thoroughly deserved 3 points. Full Time:

A fine performance from the lads who are stringing together a decent run of results with 12 points, 13 goals scored and only two conceded from four games. This was their second consecutive clean sheet a considerable feat considering we were a man short for nearly half an hour against a side who banged in 4 goals at Ampthill on Tuesday. Sun 7th Sep 2014 W&SBMFL Div 1 TAFC U15 Youth Team 1-7 Hercules Lions TAFC goals: Connor Hearn Well that was some introduction to the top division in the league!! We started quite well and improved once we moved Harri Ambrose into a back four which meant we covered their wide players. Chris Butler and Harry Brown(who had a very good debut) worked hard in midfield and Will Darraugh and Harrison Woods held the ball up well and played Connor Hearn and Matt Cato in out wide. There were chances and we hit the post twice when we attacked. The defending was very good but could not hold out against such a good attack all morning and we were two down at half-time but not beaten. Changing to three in central midfield worked for a while and Connor Hearn finished an excellent move to bring us back into the game early in the second half. It didn’t last long! Almost from the restart Hercules scored to restore their two goal lead. We were really up against it from there on as they piled the pressure and we conceded a poor fourth goal which seemed to sap whatever energy we had left. Whilst we tried hard and never gave up we were chasing shadows but the management were pleased that despite that fatigue we kept going until the very last kick. George Hill set a superb example wherever we played him – putting in maximum effort and never giving up. There were plenty of positives from the first half display and we must stay upbeat as we will not be playing such top quality opponents every week. What was clear was that they had a strong squad with no clear weaknesses. Even their subs were very good players. They are county and league champions who play academy football, so no blame and no downbeat expressions. The Managers saw enough to encourage us and we will work tirelessly in training to try and help but we all need to bear in mind that fitness continues to be vital in this top division and the players can work on this away from the standard Tuesday evening training sessions. Team: Luke Priestley (GK), Harry Poll, George Hill, Matt Cowan, Harri Ambrose, Matt Cato, Chris Butler, Harry Brown, Connor Hearn, Harrison Woods, Will Darraugh. Subs: Ryan Higgins, Lee Hatch, Sam Copleston, Isaac Munt.
