This June marks my 17th year of living in Austin. Originally from the East Coast, my husband and I were drawn to sunny, warm Austin as an idyllic location to raise our family. I fondly remember the first weeks after our arrival. Genuine hospitality was met with suspicion. “Why is everyone being so nice?” I would question, curious to detect any possible angle to their friendliness. While it’s laughable to think back on this now, I recall quickly embracing the warm welcome and wondering why it had taken us so long to choose this amazing city as our new hometown. As the saying goes, “I wasn't born in Texas, but I got here as fast as I could.”

In those first few months of moving here, pregnant and with a toddler in tow, I made daily trips to our neighborhood gathering place, Brentwood Park. It was there that I formed a sense of community for myself, my children, my family. In the years since, I am lucky to have discovered many other opportunities for finding my place within the community — volunteering with a local theater and with our public schools, joining a choir,

AS THE SAYING GOES,
“I wasn't born in Texas, but I got here as fast as I could.”

and developing strong relationships with coworkers and neighbors who now feel like family.

In this issue of TRIBEZA, we’re celebrating the Austin community. We give a glimpse into some unique, niche groups in which people can “find their people.” We take a look at how a sandlot baseball team is raising funds for good. We explore how the former Hyde Park U.S. Post Office is now a blossoming hub of activity. We discuss the motivation of giving back to nonprofits with local television personality, Trevor Scott. We talk with esteemed Chef Matthew Peters to learn why he’s planting his culinary roots here in Austin. We also take a dive into the past by exploring restaurants that are housed in the city’s historic buildings.

Settling into my 17th year of living a vibrant and happy life in Austin, I can say with tremendous pride that there is something truly special about this creative and passionate community. There is something here for everyone. All you have to do is start with a friendly “howdy” to your neighbors.

I hope to see you around the neighborhood!

FLY AWAY TO THE MONARCH

FOR RESPITE AMONG THE TREES, THESE UNIQUE GETAWAY CABINS OFFER STUNNING ARCHITECTURE IN QUIET NATURESCAPES

TRAVEL PICK
By Heidi Okla Photographs by Jeri Atkins and Graham Butler

With no shortage of unique lodging options in the Texas Hill Country, you can plan a restful weekend in any sort of yurt, teepee, cozy cabin, or glamping tent that you please, but for something that truly stands apart from the rest, the Monarch dwelling located at luxury nature compound Onera lured us in with magical wonderment. Set amidst a peaceful wooded landscape in Fredericksburg, we found a home fancifully shaped like a butterfly in flight for a night’s getaway.

An Instagram darling for its captivating photos and videos, Onera offers unique structures that vary from the cozy Cocoon, to the barrel-shaped Spyglass, to the Lantana geodescent dome, but it’s the Monarch treehouse that set our hearts aflutter.

Designed by Artistree, the Monarch is elevated 10 feet off the ground, which provides a sense of enchantment and offers incredible views of leafy trees above and the waters of Barons Creek below. Ample decking provides an ideal outdoor perch to enjoy the sounds of birds and wildlife, but even when inside, the floor-to-ceiling windows and skylights let the outside in for a seamless connection to nature’s beauty. Below the deck, the luxurious cabin offers a private, open-air rock tub for a sensational soak. Inside the Monarch, the irresistible indoor lofted hammock will have you resting peacefully under views of the treetops by day and stars by night.

A shaded communal area features a swimming pool and a barrel sauna that offers just the right level of elevated experience to soothe any needs for R&R, but if you’re seeking more customized enhancements for your vacation, you can schedule an in-room massage, a roomside chef-prepared dinner, a guided stargazing opportunity, and more.

The Fredericksburg location is just blocks away from Main Street activities, along with many wonderful nearby wineries and fruit orchards. The Wimberley location is set to open in late summer, bringing more whimsical luxury lodging opportunities just a short drive from Austin.

“Onera”, which translates to “dreams” in Greek, successfully presents a dreamlike ambience, fit for intimate getaways that celebrate the beauty of the outdoors.

“We transformed a whimsical forest...into an intimate dream-like escape to inspire our guests and reconnect them to nature, their loved ones and themselves.”

CHEF MATHEW PETERS ELEVATES AUSTIN FINE DINING

SEVEN YEARS AFTER HIS WIN AT THE Bocuse d’Or, a biannual French competition often touted as the Olympics of the culinary world, Chef Mathew Peters is still the only U.S.-born gold medalist in the history of the competition. Since 2017, he’s been planting roots in Austin, consulting and working as a private chef, while developing a response to the question, “What next?” His answer arrives with the opening of Prelude, a cocktail and canapé bar located at 707 West 10th St.

Mentored by Thomas Keller, who Peters worked for at Michelin-starred establishments French Laundry and Per Se, Peters was also nurtured also by his time spent at Alain Ducasse’s

Adour in NYC. Now, the chef forges a vision in Texas’ capital city with no less ambition than he had going into the Bocuse. Peters recently discussed earning attention from the same organization that starred Keller’s and Ducasse’s restaurants.

“The conversation of Michelin stars has been heightened, specifically lately,” said Peters. “We’re excited for that, hopefully, to transition here sometime soon. The goal is to add one of those to the city, to the state… But I think the main goal is to put out the best product that we possibly can without overreaching the comfort of our guests.”

Prelude’s menu of canapés is subject to change leading up to the opening, as Peters settles on

final favorites and works with the seasonal availability of ingredients. The current iteration includes hors d'oeuvres with beloved food staples such as tacos, tots, and even spinach artichoke dip. Meant as familiar and playful touchpoints for guests, without strict rules of interpretation, the tots are actually panisse, a food with roots in Southern France, and served with pistachio dukkah and aji amarillo. The tacos are citrus-cured hamachi in a sesame “cornet.”

“As a family, my wife and I love going to Bartlett’s and having the spinach dip,” said Peters, explaining his preference for soulful, inviting spaces offering food “cooked from the heart.”

“Being in the industry for as long as I have, the smoke and mirror game is widely used,” explained Peters. “It’s really great to get a dish

that is simply stated, but you can tell that there’s a lot of attention to detail based on the execution and general warmth of the dish.”

On a recent night at Prelude, Chef Peters worked alongside Sterling Ridings, previously the executive chef at Uchiko, to prepare canapés for a photo shoot. After cleanly sabering a bottle of champagne on the back lawn, Peters plated morsels including the masa gougeres, piled with a bright red slick of guajillo pepper sauce, caviar-like finger lime, and green lime zest. A standout bite was the Murder Point oysters, layered in cocktail sauce and pickled celery.

Prelude’s setting offers a dark but rich space of velvety fabrics, barroom-coffered ceilings. and elegant wainscotting. Golden accents and floral motifs interplay with a series of figurative lenticular prints by Gary James McQueen.

Soon, Peters’ extensive collection of books by and for chefs will find a new home, at least in part, in an upstairs bourbon room, for visitors to enjoy. Mathew Peters’ full-service restaurant, Maven, will also be located upstairs. Eager to move past fine dining’s reputation for stuffy formality to focus on epicurean joys, Peters points to his cocktail and canapé bar as a herald of things to come. For now, guests can look forward to the overtures made towards surprisingly fresh and elevated takes on modern classics in the relaxed and unpretentious space that is Prelude.

Empowering Women, One Swing at a Time

How Austin's All-Female Golf Collective is Changing the Game

Traditionally, the greens have been the domain of men, with diversity a rarity on manicured golf courses, but the landscape is shifting. The once-exclusive boys' club is undergoing a seismic transformation, and at the forefront of this revolution stands Eleanor Lee.

Lee has cultivated a nurturing environment for women who are eager to embrace the timeless game of golf. Inspired by her grandmother's profound love for the competitive pastime, Lee channels her passion for the sport into empowering women through Hot Girl Golf, a club dedicated to welcoming newcomers to the sport.

Upon inheriting her grandmother's golf clubs following her passing, Lee felt compelled to explore the sport that had brought her role model so much joy. However, confronted with the daunting reality of lacking connections and guidance, she had to forge her own path forward. Stepping onto the fairway, a woman’s presence is often met with unwanted attention, which quickly overshadows the joy of the game.

“It is uncomfortable for women sometimes to go and play on the course,” explains Lee. The steep financial investment, coupled with a lack of camaraderie and familiarity, further compounds the challenge, but Hot Girl Golf refuses to let these obstacles stand in their way.

After realizing she wasn’t alone in her pursuit of learning the game, Lee took the first step of her journey by hosting meet-ups. “I started it with a few driving range meetups on the Sweatpals app,” says Lee.

“I think our first meetup had 10 girls, which for me, was huge.” From that pivotal moment, the group's momentum surged. Through the power of social media, and enthusiastic word-of-mouth conversations, Hot Girl Golf swiftly gained traction. From beginners who have never played at all, to those that may know a thing or two, all are welcome. Acknowledging the financial constraints many face when pursuing a new hobby, Lee is steadfast in her commitment to removing barriers.

"I always have golf clubs for people to borrow at every single event, non-negotiable," she affirms. "I want it to be accessible for everyone. It's something I'm thinking about for every single event."

The club aims to hold events once a month, ranging from scramble tournaments to driving range sessions, technical clinics, and explorations of various courses. Many friendships have blossomed within the club, providing opportunities for girls to connect with others who share their interests, even if they initially arrive solo.

"The club is a meeting base and a resource for girls to make connections so that they can learn and play outside of the club," says Lee. "I just want them to have a safe space."

The organization is poised for expansion, having recently launched a new chapter in Miami and with plans for pop-up events across Texas on the horizon. Lee's success underscores the vital significance of representation and empowerment in sports and paves the way for the next generation of female athletes.

Chasing Sunlight and Glory on the Track

Weekly Driveway Series Races Bring Together Cyclists of All Levels

If you like riding bikes and have a competitive spirit, the Driveway Series might be the perfect community for you.

Nestled just five miles east of the bustling downtown area — off Walnut Creek Trail — lies a hidden gem for cyclists. The Driveway was initially built as a motorsports track and racing school, but local cyclists seized the opportunity to use it for a Thursday weeknight criterium series that commenced in 2005. Since then, the series has steadily grown into the country's largest and longest-running weeknight criterium race.

Its serpentine layout, flanked by lush trees and expansive grass fields, has made it one of the country's most sought-after bike racing venues and a unique community that brings Austin cyclists of all levels together on a weekly basis for half the year. Whether you’re a novice looking to dip your toes into racing or a Tour de France pro — seriously, they show up occasionally — the Driveway offers an inclusive yet competitive environment for all skill levels.

The track accommodates five courses, allowing racers to test their dynamic skills from week to week. The longest course is only 1.6 miles, so participants circle it many times within each race, which lasts up to 75 minutes (total race time varying depending on race category). Spectators can see the racers fly by lap after lap, reaching dizzying speeds of well over 30 miles per hour.

Sponsors and local businesses provide prizes throughout the races to those who cross the line first on designated “prime laps.” Points are accumulated for the top finishers, who also win cash prizes, as well as points that go towards the six-week “mini-series” winner.

After the races, participants and spectators often ride their bikes together through Walnut Creek Trail and downtown, regrouping at a local restaurant or watering hole for an informal afterparty. While this might make for a tough Friday morning, it’s always worth it and gives endurance junkies something to look forward to — and stay in shape for — every week.

“For me, the Driveway provides a consistent opportunity to do what makes me love this sport so much — race,” says Evan Bausbacher, of the Matador Racing team. “The familiar courses and faces make the racing feel incredibly safe and fun, and the racing is just part of it. The Driveway has brought all cyclists together for so many years now, and the post-race hangs continue to make Austin the best cycling community.

“There’s something about racing your bike really hard and then becoming close friends with your competitors afterwards,” adds Bausbacher. “Most of my friends in Austin came from racing at the Driveway, which wouldn’t be possible without the consistency of Thursdays.”

The racing season at the Driveway spans for 26 weeks from March to October. Races start in the late afternoon and continue until dusk so participants and spectators can soak up the beautiful Texas sunset from the track. New this year, bi-weekly bike races will be held on Saturday mornings throughout the summer, attracting cyclists from across the region seeking to escape the scorching temperatures, while still experiencing the thrill of racing.

Win or lose, the Driveway Series is always a good time full of excitement and camaraderie.

The Resounding Voices of the Austin Gay Men's Chorus Echo with a Profound Mission: Change Minds, Transform Lives, and Build Community

Five-year Austin Gay Men's Chorus member Marlon Johnson is clearly moved as composer Karl Logue shares the origins of the group, a sobering reminder of the challenges faced by the LGBTQ+ community during the AIDS epidemic.

In April 1989, the NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt was nearing its final display at the Texas Capitol, honoring those affected by HIV/AIDS. Among the notable events was a musical performance by the Turtle Creek choir, which prompted Logue and a few others, including David Weigel and Don Kennedy, to start their own hometown chorus. Their first rehearsal took place that September with 16 members.

Amidst the devastation of the AIDS epidemic, the group (under its original name of Capital City Men’s Chorus), provided a supportive community for its members, offering solace amidst the widespread disease. Logue acknowledges the tragedies faced by LGBTQ+ choruses during this period, highlighting the collective mission of survival and mutual support amidst staggering death tolls. Several of their first performances were at funerals of loved ones. Through their music and camaraderie, the chorus served as a beacon of resilience during one of the darkest chapters in LGBTQ+ history.

“The unspoken mission was ‘Survive this. Support each other, and we’ll get through it together,’” says Logue. From those somber beginnings to its current status as the longest-operating men’s chorus in central Texas with 150 members, the AGMC has remained steadfast in its mission to change minds, transform lives, and build community through the power of music.

At the heart of the chorus is its unwavering commitment to inclusivity and diversity. Daniel Arredondo, artistic director since 2018, emphasizes membership is open to anyone who can sing tenor bass, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.

"Our organization welcomes anyone who can match those pitches, regardless

of how they identify," says Arredondo. The chorus's repertoire spans a diverse range of genres, from classical to contemporary, reflecting its commitment to cultural diversity, and the ethos of inclusivity encompasses non-singing participants, creating a vibrant and supportive community.

In addition to its regular concerts, the AGMC has garnered acclaim for its collaborations with renowned artists and organizations. From sharing the stage with Grammy-nominated mezzo-soprano Rose Taylor, to performing at prestigious venues like Carnegie Hall and the inauguration of Governor Ann Richards, the chorus has solidified its place as a cultural institution. Arredondo proudly mentions the chorus's selection by the American Choral Directors Association as a testament to its musical excellence and dedication. Johnson considers performing at Austin Independent School District’s Pride events to be a particular high note.

“Being invited back feels like a significant achievement for us, especially considering the challenges surrounding Pride events in schools,” explains Johnson. “It's an honor to know they value our ongoing relationship, despite the increasing intensity of these conversations.”

Beyond accolades and performances, the true essence of the AGMC lies in its unwavering commitment to building a supportive community. As Logue aptly summarizes, "Our purpose is so much bigger than us. I've seen the chorus do its work and seen its work for the community." Whether it's providing a safe space for LGBTQ+ individuals to express themselves through music or advocating for social justice, the AGMC continues to embody the spirit of resilience, solidarity, and hope.

For those considering joining the chorus, Arredondo extends a warm invitation, emphasizing that "everyone is welcome." Johnson echoes this sentiment, assuring newcomers that there's "always an empty chair waiting for you." With open arms and harmonious voices, the AGMC continues to sing not just for themselves, but for a better, more inclusive world — one note at a time.

The Wine & Food Foundation Connects Wine Lovers Through Education and Philanthropy

At its core, the Wine & Food Foundation is all about community. Well, OK. It’s also about wine and food, but it's mostly about fostering connections, spreading knowledge, and pouring back into the local community — while swirling, sipping, and bonding over vino, of course.

“Community is what we do best,” says Executive Director Denise Silverman. WFF’s founding members first came together to create the Rare and Fine Wine Auction, a fundraiser aimed to engage wine lovers and collectors while raising funds for worthy causes. The event became a hit, and the group knew they wanted to do more than host an annual auction. The nonprofit officially incorporated in 1997, and since then, WFF has awarded more than $1.7 million in grants, scholarships, and industry support to local organizations, as well as individuals in the hospitality industry.

From supporting initiatives like Southern Smoke, Austin Shift Meal, Urban Roots, Central Texas Food Bank, and others, to providing scholarships for aspiring culinary professionals, WFF is dedicated to making a meaningful impact in the community."We harness the collective power of our community to support philanthropic initiatives that align with our values," explains Silverman.

Through a diverse array of events, casual get-togethers (like member happy hours or informal Imbibe classes), and upscale galas, (including the annual Rare and Fine Wine Auction), WFF brings together individuals who share a passion for the culinary arts. Whether you're a newbie wanting to upgrade your boxed rosé or an oenophile itching to explore more of Burgundy or Bordeaux, there's a place for you. And, with a calendar packed full of exciting events, tastings, seminars, and meet-the-winemaker gatherings, there's always a chance to meet a new pinot pal.

"Our programming is educational, fun, mission-focused, and open to all," says Silverman. Indeed, WFF’s events reflect this ethos, providing opportunities for members to learn, connect, and celebrate together in un-intimidating environments. "We want everyone to feel like they can join our community, regardless of where they are in their wine journey.”

Marie Blackmon, WFF member of seven years with her husband Alan Comley, agrees. “We knew absolutely nothing about wine when we joined the foundation and we are incredibly thankful that we did.” says Blackmon. “Today, we know more about what wines truly spark our interests and have made so many meaningful connections with wonderful people, both winemakers and members, who share our passion for discovering more.”

Another of WFF’s key initiatives is its support for hospitality workers. Through grants and scholarships, the organization helps individuals in the industry further their education and advance their careers. By partnering with institutions like the Texas Wine School, WFF helps to equip hospitality professionals with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in a competitive industry.

"Education is expensive, especially for those in the hospitality field. We want to support their growth and help raise the bar in our local community,” notes Silverman.

With its vibrant community, educational opportunities, and commitment to philanthropy, WFF is the perfect place to uncork your passion for wine and food.

“People don’t just love wine. They love everything about wine. Wine is about family, stories, and history,” says Silverman. “Wine brings people together in a way that’s different from anything else!”

On select Sundays, the COTA parking lot transforms into a showcase of Texas' finest automobiles, from classics to race cars, exotics to hot rods, muscle cars to off-roaders, and everything in between. Bobby Epstein, COTA Chairman describes Cars & Coffee as "a special setting for the car enthusiasts, collectors, and admirers to not only see some one-of-a-kind vehicles, but to speak with their owners and renovators and really connect over their shared passion."

But Cars and Coffee is not just about the cars; it's about the people and the stories behind the vehicles, as well as the community it fosters.

“People can really spend time walking around and getting to know not only more about the cars, but the people passionate about them as well,” says Epstein. “It’s a conversational and fun environment, whether you’re a lifelong collector or a young racing fan.”

Since its establishment in 2020, Cars and Coffee has become a staple event at COTA, aligning with the company's mission to provide a place for people to come together and make memories all year long, not just on race days. "Celebrating car enthusiasts, gearheads, and motorsports fans at the world-famous COTA track is

a natural fit,” adds Allie Stone, VP Marketing & Communications at COTA. Throughout the year, attendees can look forward to various activities, including Formula 1 Grand Prix watch parties, on-track action, and even the chance to test their skills at COTA Karting. This blend of excitement and camaraderie makes the event a must-visit destination for automotive enthusiasts of all ages. Admission is free for spectators, and dogs are welcome. Additionally, onsite kiddie karting ensures that even the youngest visitors get a taste of the action.

Cars and Coffee is not just a showcase for exclusive vehicles; it's a platform for anyone passionate about cars to participate. "Our showcase is fully composed of public entries,” mentions Stone. “Anyone who wants their vehicle to be part of the car show can register online or onsite for $12.”

In a city like Austin, known for its vibrant and eclectic community, Cars and Coffee fills a unique need by providing a recurring space for people to come together and share their passion for cars. COTA's sprawling campus accommodates thousands of car show entrants at each event, ensuring a diverse and exciting showcase every time, including “classics, antiques, revamped favorites, imports, exotics, motorcycles, and probably a restored version of your favorite high school ride.”

Cars and Coffee is a vibrant celebration of shared passions, where enthusiasts gather to indulge in their love for automobiles and forge connections over an appreciation for horsepower. Head to the COTA for a Sunday filled with caffeine, camaraderie, and plenty of vroom, vroom.

Levity on the Lake

Water Ski Enthusiasts Share a Snapshot of How Lake Culture Adds to the Fabric of Austin

Ice cold margaritas were flowing, live music was playing, and the tables of Ski Shores Cafe were bustling on a warm sunny Father’s Day weekend last June as crowds gathered to raise a toast to dads and united to watch the annual Vintage Ski Show on Lake Austin.

Dockside, life was festive and fun, but we found ourselves drawn to the smiling faces and camaraderie of the waterski team who were performing that day. “How does someone get into this type of group sport?” we pondered.

It’s obvious that the waters of Lake Austin add distinct beauty to the sparkling views of our city, but it’s on the water where you’ll find a truly unique community — where friendship and connection are built while locals bask in the sunshine on boats, skis, and wakeboards.

In our quest to learn more about that lakeside culture, we sat down with Elle Florescu, an essential player in the coordination of the annual Ski Shores Ski Show. Florescu, an avid waterski enthusiast, explained just how vital this lake community is to the fabric of Austin.

“I feel that lake life is sort of this sanctuary,” said Florescu. “You can wake up early any morning of any week and have a beautiful clear lake at your leisure. Whether you're swimming or on the boat skiing, I think that's really special. It's sort of a wholesome replenishment that brings a levity to life.”

According to Florescu, there’s a wide range of people that you’ll meet on the lake. She describes the general attitude as “super friendly.”

“I will say there's an intuitive understanding of no griping, no pretense. We're just here to have fun,” explained Florescu.

In terms of an organized waterski team, the idea of their annual June ski show came to be informally and organically among friends. Florescu shared that the first year was very “scrappy,” as she worked with other skiers she had gotten to know out on the lake almost everyday. One ski buddy was Wilson Allen, owner of Executive Watersports, which offers summer water sport camps and private instruction. The show included several of Allen’s students, and everything grew from there.

“I think the whole idea of the show is to give a little bit of a snapshot of the culture on Lake Austin,” shared Allen. “It's just fun for people to come out and see that there are groups of people that incorporate the lake into their lifestyles year round.”

As for the future of the Vintage Ski Show, it will return to Ski Shores this June, and Florescu aims to grow the event to eventually start a nonprofit organization to support water ecology, water safety, and provide scholarship opportunities for youth to engage in water sport lessons.

For someone new to Austin or new to watersports, Wilson Allen’s Executive Watersports lessons offer a great place to start that introduction into lake culture. Florescu noted how special it is to “find like-minded people that are looking to do something of that same athletic caliber. It feels like an organic way to find other people doing the same activities.”

For both Florescu and Allen, Lake Austin is an essential part of their community. Florescu concludes that the lake offers a brief “reprieve from the rest of your life, which is really nice.”

The

How to Grow a Dance Floor

It’s truly a golden era in Austin right now,” says dance instructor, Vanessa Vaught, who operates under the name of Double or Nothing. Dozens of couples crowd her on worn-in wooden floors as she flouts convention with unorthodox footwork.

“I teach 10 to 15 classes a week,” adds Vaught. “We had 80 people at our first class at Sagebrush [back in March 2021]. It really has not slowed down since then.”

“The main dance we do here is swing in the style of two-step,” says the teacher. “I call it honky tonk two-step. The closest thing it would be to is the jitterbug ... It took me a while to wrap my head around it.”

Recounting her novice days, she confesses bewilderment. Classroom moves never squared with what happened out at the bars, so Vaught stopped going to classes and started going out dancing. A renegade of the style now teaching across Austin, she may stand out among instructors, but students hardly mind. New partners find growing ranks of like-minded boot scooters on the tight, sweatsteamed dance floors. Since last July, Double or Nothing student Nico Osier has led queer two-step and line-dance events as “Country Fried Dance,” Alongside DJ Boi Orbison, Osier hopes to host regular classes called Bronco at locations they’ll

announce on their Instagram page.

Former professional dancer Lea Alix, 92, her husband, Lou, consider themselves swing dancers, but dance all over town. “[Donn’s Depot] is our favorite because these musicians here are the best you’ll ever see in a lifetime,” says Alix on a night featuring Frank Cavitt and the Honky Tonk Doctors.

Off the sunken dance floor, a student who took the beginner two-step class with Vanessa Vaught said he came especially to hear Erik Hokkanen, while Charlyn Daugherty explained that she had been coming to Donn’s for 50 years, starting in her 20s. Mireille Bland, of Austin, brought friends in tow from Germany and Portland, “I love how [Vanessa Vaught] is very clear that anyone can be ‘a follow’ or ‘a lead,;” says Bland.

At Sam’s Town Point, the students are a mix of tourists and locals in a pattern that holds across several venues that offer one-hour intros. At The Broken Spoke, Terri White grew hoarse in an attempt to teach whole busloads of visiting young learners giggling in Spanish. To wrangle them, she taught the cotton-eyed Joe. Every teacher has their tricks and tools. After the instruction hour, the dancers take over with their own style and they just keep coming, keeping everyone on their toes.

Anyone that’s had a chance to make it to a Texas Playboys game knows how fun it is for all ages, whether they are baseball enthusiasts or not. TRIBEZA contributor Kelly Krause recently chatted with Texas Playboys Baseball Club founder Jack Sanders and his Steppin' Up to the Plate committee – Elizabeth Pecore, Tippi Clark, Austin McCord, Chelsey Korman, and Ashley Southerland – to learn more about their community impact program and what’s in store for 2024.

STEPPIN’ UP TO THE PLATE

The Texas Playboys Show Their Dedication to Community Impact On and Off the Field

THE FOUNDING OF THE TEXAS PLAYBOYS BASEBALL CLUB

“I wanted to show my friends a special type of community baseball that I was exposed to when I lived in Newbern, Alabama, a small town with 200 residents, but on Sundays, the Newbern Baseball Club would have 400 to 500 people at their games, with music, beer, and fried catfish.” shared Playboys’ founder, Jack Sanders.

GIVING BACK THROUGH THE STEPPIN’ UP TO THE PLATE INITIATIVE

“For a while, it was just about baseball,” Sanders continued. “Our inspiration was from the Newbern Baseball Club, who used the money they raised at the gate to provide ‘dignified burials’ to the community by providing flowers and sometimes sent the ball team out to dig the graves by hand. At some point, we realized that if we wanted to do justice to this effort, we had to introduce a service element to our organization. This effort, called Steppin' Up to the Plate, (SUTTP) is approaching $200,000 in funds raised for local nonprofits over the last 5 seasons.”

“Service has always been a part of Texas Playboys’ DNA, noted members of the SUTTP committee. “Formalizing the Steppin’ Up committee was just a way to structure our giving [program] and attempt to focus on charities that can feel the impact of the proceeds. It’s the sandlot approach to philanthropy – party with a purpose! Most of the committee members are creative people with a passion for giving back.”

tribeza.com | MAY/JUNE 2024 55

A COMMITTEE OF DO-GOODERS

“The SUTTP committee is a group of Texas Playboys and friends who volunteer their time to vet, select, and support our nonprofit game-day partners. We are also focused on their long-term success and try to shed light on the great work they do in the broader ATX community. So the committee formed as a collaborative effort and helped us work as a club instead of as individuals. The group consists of creative, resourceful, and connected weirdos with a heart for our central Texas nonprofit community. Today, we have a core group of six who meet every Wednesday at the Uptown Sports Club over biscuits and coffee,” shared members of the committee.

IMPACTFUL GIVING TO COMMUNITY PARTNERS

The Texas Playboys philanthropic efforts have raised somewhere in the ballpark of $200,000. A lot of the work is focused on the marginalized populations of Central Texas.

SUTTP committee members noted, “We are also fortunate to have a strong support network of very generous Austin-based brands and organizations who have partnered with us. Tito’s has been an invaluable partner over the years and provides a matching contribution for each gameday nonprofit sponsor. Still Austin, Sabah, TLC, McGuire Moorman Lambert Hospitality, and many others are very generous supporters.”

“This year, we are streamlining our giving efforts to make giving even more ‘sandlot’, added team members.” We work to keep it communal and fun. This includes everything from gathering goods from our supporting partners for raffle baskets to encouraging and educating our community and network about how simple and simultaneously fun this model can be.”

THE LONG TIME OFFERS A TRULY AUTHENTIC AUSTIN EXPERIENCE

“It could be argued that Texas Playboy home games at The Long Time are the embodiment of everything that makes Austin special to so many of people,” noted Sanders. “If you are looking for a truly authentic Austin experience, The Long Time is difficult to match. There’s always amazing food and drink from Scholz Garten, unbelievable live-music performances by talented Austin musicians, and the opportunity to support our gameday nonprofit partner. That’s not to mention watching a wonderful, error-filled, baseball game, from a team that cares for one another, our community, our neighbors, and the city we live in.”

Sanders continued, “You don't have to love baseball to come out to the game – it’s a time to connect with other Austinites and remember when life was simple and people engaged with one another around one of the greatest pastimes in existence. It’s the only place in Austin where kids get to run the field with watermelon helmets with a backdrop of Willie Nelson, catch a flying biscuit from the Little Ola’s biscuit cannon and remember there are still people who share a sense of community and a desire to connect over baseball, art, music, and culture.”

Kevin Burns

BROKER + CEO | URBANSPACE

DOWNTOWN

It is safe to say that Kevin Burns is NOT afraid of heights. Since founding Urbanspace in 2000, he has been the force behind many of the city’s most recognizable skyscrapers and developments, including the Independent, 44 East, and Seaholm, and is now developing Austin’s premier luxury condo tower, The Modern Austin Residences in the Rainey Street District. He has sold more condos than anyone else in Austin (verified by several other realtors in this guide who have worked with him over the years and fondly referred to him as “El Jefe” or “El Burnzo”), has sold well over $1 Billion in Austin real estate, and even sold out 98% of The Modern in a single week.

To Kevin, a perfect day in downtown would start with a coffee and end with dancing at The Codependent, a coffee and cocktail lounge he founded as a passion project while while selling out the Independent. After a walk on Lady Bird Lake trail, he suggests Sunday brunch at Yucatáninspired Mexican restaurant, Bacalar (which he also founded), then a little shopping on Second Street. The day winds down with dinner at Uchiba, a show at Moody Theater or The Paramount, wrapping up with drinks at The Austin Proper.

It is her deep understanding of the value of a real estate investment, prioritization of open communication, and her uncanny intuition to maximize returns that has proven successful for her fulfilled clients for the past twenty years.

In Old West Austin, Kumara often represents both buyers and sellers of some of the most special properties in the city. CLARKSVILLE

With over thirty years in Austin, it makes sense for Erin to represent Clarksville, one of the longest-established neighborhoods in the city. Marked by its unique charm of historic homes and bungalows, Clarksville is a neighborhood that has stayed relatively the same, even through Austin’s extensive growth. One of Erin’s favorite things about it is the juxtaposition of the historic neighborhood with the vibrant Austin downtown skyline in the background. She loves the walkability to its incredible restaurants and bars, as well as the proximity of downtown. Clarksville’s beloved West End Park is where you can find many neighborhoodsponsored activities and events, like “Its My Park Day,” where neighbors can bring blankets and lawn chairs to enjoy local music and food while hanging out with family and friends. The area is about to undergo some exciting new projects, including a major transformation of the city block on W 6th and Blanco into a 5-story mixed-use retail, hotel, office and residences.

Erin’s approach to real estate includes personalized service, and - thanks to her artistic background and passion for architecture and design - incredible design sensibility to curate a lifestyle that aligns with her clients’ aspirations.

HYDE PARK

As the founder of SEED Property Group in Austin, Tammy Young values genuine relationships and trust in real estate. There is no place she would rather live than Hyde Park, cherished for the people, charming historic houses, tree-lined streets, local businesses, parks, and walkability. Here, she’s not just a real estate broker; she’s a neighbor, a friend, a runner, an optimistic tennis player, and a mom, deeply immersed in the fabric of this unique pocket of our city.

Preserving Hyde Park’s charm amidst development is crucial to the community. She applauds creative initiatives like converting the old post office into a lively food market, showcasing the neighborhood’s innovative spirit. She loves how old houses have evolved with changing lifestyles but still stand the test of time. One of her recent success stories involved finding a client a classic bungalow seamlessly reimagined into a modern marvel by architect Michael Hsu. Tammy anticipates further development of the neighborhood as Central Austin grows, but is committed to preserving its rich historical charm. Her favorite spot is the Elisabet Ney museum, named for the renowned sculptor and 19th century women’s movement trailblazer. The limestone landmark displays the largest collection of Ney’s work.

ROLLINGWOOD

Did you know, in Rollingwood, there is a historical cave site rumored to run all the way to the lake? Known as Bandit’s Cave, the neighborhood Women’s Club hosted Halloween parties there in the 1970s. While it is no longer accessible, it is an interesting part of local history, one that Realtor and 20year resident Amy Rung knows well. Originally lured to the area by the excellent schools and nurturing environment for raising a family, Amy has facilitated over eighty transactions here and sees herself as a matchmaker who connects homes with families in her beloved community. Her success is rooted in the trust and referrals of her clients.

Many buyers don’t realize Rollingwood is a city with a mayor, city hall, and police department. Sandwiched between Austin and Westlake with spacious lots and mature trees, Rollingwood offers a unique blend of small-town life, exemplary Eanes ISD schools, and urban conveniences. The heart of Rollingwood is its 8-acre park with playgrounds, baseball fields, and a walking trail. Next door is Western Hills Athletic Club (aka Rollingwood Pool), a private club with swimming, tennis, and pickleball. The community has many gatherings such as the Easter Egg-Stravaganza, 4th of July Parade, and Holiday Party. Additionally, this year, we held a Female-Owned Business Fair!

LAKEWAY / LAKE TRAVIS

As a San Francisco Bay transplant, Shannon Ayres immediately fell in love with the Lakeway area for the incredible vibe she calls “lake-life balance.” She lives just minutes away from Rough Hollow Marina, where after working hard all day and afternoon activities with her kids, she and her family often hop in their boat for a sunset cocktail cruise around the lake. Specializing in luxury properties and relocation services, Shannon prides herself in her problem-solving and negotiation skills, ensuring smooth transactions and exceptional customer service for her clients. She is actively engaged in networking opportunities and relationship building to foster positive connections within her community. This “lake-life balance” is truly rewarding all around.

Among the many incredible restaurants, bars and community spaces Lakeway has to offer, Shannon’s favorite hidden gems are 5 Soul Winery & Frontyard Brewery, just minutes away from home. These two hot spots share a courtyard that includes six pickleball courts, live music, events, food trucks, a monthly women’s social collective and more. Growth in the area is moving out HWY 71 into Spicewood. Travis Club and Thomas Ranch are the newest communities in development, adding golf courses, new commercial, and a spa in the near future!

BARTON HILLS

Former NFL athlete turned real estate agent, Peyton Thompson manages a substantial investment portfolio of assets across Austin, and has a particular love for Barton Hills. He chose this neighborhood for its perfect blend of convenience and charm. The area offers the best of both worlds—a vibrant urban lifestyle and serene natural beauty, including trendy shops and delicious eateries on South Lamar, and easy access to scenic trails and waterways along Barton Springs and the greenbelt.

As a new parent, one of Peyton’s favorite spots is Barton Hills Elementary. The campus is open on weekends, providing a fantastic opportunity for families to gather outdoors, drawn by amenities like community gardens, playgrounds, basketball courts, and soccer fields. Plus, it is right across from the greenbelt entrance.

Zilker Park steals the spotlight in the neighborhood with renowned events like Austin City Limits, Blues on the Green, and the Trail of Lights, but when no events are on, you can usually find Peyton picnicking there with his family, listening to music and people and dog-watching with the Austin skyline in the background.

Third generation Austinite Albert Allen puts his clients and community first. Actively involved in supporting roles at Anderson High School, Austin Board of Realtor’s diversity and legislative committees, and a non-profit (Rebuilding Together) that helps low-income homeowners with home renovations, he demonstrates his commitment to others. As a longtime resident of Northwest Hills, Albert describes the area as having “a hill country feel in the middle of the city.” With all housing types and sizes, and rolling hills throughout the neighborhood, many of the homes (most of which were built around 1960s-1980s) have greenbelt views, back to preserves, or have green space very nearby. According to Albert, Northwest Hills residents are kind, giving, and supportive people who are not only active in the neighborhood, but in the community at large.

Sorrento’s

As one of the least touristy neighborhoods in Austin, Northwest Hills is stacked with essential services - top medical facilities, schools, business services, and abundant green spaces. It is also conveniently located within fifteen minutes of Downtown, the Domain, Lake Austin, Zilker Park, and Mount Bonnell. as far as neighborhood traditions, Albert loves the annual Fourth of July Parade and Freedom Fest, featuring the “world-ish renowned” Lawn Chair Brigade.

SOUTH LAMAR

As a proud “Southy,” Michelle Hendrix says that it’s almost too easy to have a great day on South Lamar. It starts with coffee at Opa Wine and Coffee Bar, followed by pickleball at Bouldin Acres and a refreshing dip in Barton Springs. The day continues with a visit to Hanger Art Studios, thrift shopping, ice cream at Amy’s, and a show at Alamo Drafthouse or Zach Scott Theatre, capped off with a delicious snack and a night cap at any of her local favorites along the South Lamar corridor.

Michelle’s professional ethos revolves around investing in relationships, and commiting to that sweet spot for her clients where joyful living truly meets legacy investments. While it continues to see incredible growth, South Lamar is full of history. One of her most memorable deals involved a stunning mid-century modern home she sold last year. Tasked with enhancing the time capsule vibe and showcasing the distinct architecture, her team pulled out all the stops, including two mint 60’s Chevelles in the open air carport. The buyer and seller were a match made in heaven. Looking ahead, Michelle envisions exciting developments like the transformation of Brodie Oaks into a vibrant mixed-use community, bringing parkland, exciting retail and new residences, including affordable housing with Foundation Communities!

CRESTVIEW / BRENTWOOD

Anyone who spends time around Midtown Austin likely recognizes John Dunham’s vintage blue bronco driving to and from house showings in Crestview. This is the neighborhood where he bought his first home in Austin after college, and where he and his business partners established the Juice Real Estate Group Headquarters in 2019. Midtown’s allure lies in its perfect blend of old and new (like the Juice office on Koenig Ln). It is conveniently placed between the original Downtown and The Domain for not only entertainment purposes but as economic hubs where major employers are located. Those in the medical field will find an easy commute to Dell Children’s Hospital in East Austin. These sister neighborhoods are the benefactors of the newly built Brentwood Elementary, and adjoining nine-acre park with pavilion, walking trail, basketball court and more (a huge draw for families). The Crestview Station on Airport Blvd is a draw for those seeking a light rail option to downtown or Q2 Stadium for soccer games. Burnet Road has a wealth of dining options today, plus a few classic watering holes like Ginny’s Little Longhorn Saloon and LaLa’s Little Nugget. When it comes to hidden gems in the area, the secret is out about Little Deli and Pizzeria, which is home to some of the best pizza and sandwiches in town. John is most excited about the addition across the parking lot, The Violet Crown.

Meet Erin, a data-driven Realtor with an eye for design. Though Erin is best known for her off-market home tours on social media (@erinsellsatx), it is her affinity for numbers and understanding of quality construction that sets her apart from other agents. Through market research and regular open houses, Erin is acutely aware of how to advise clients to list appropriately and offer assertively. A former valedictorian at Syracuse University, Erin worked as a data analyst in NYC’s financial district before moving to Texas in 2015.

A Travis Heights resident for nearly a decade, Erin believes there is nowhere better to live to get the true Austin experience. In Travis Heights, residents are steps from the city’s best restaurants, shops and hotels. The neighborhood is ripe with early 1900s bungalows and cottages, as well as outdoor spaces to walk and play like Little Stacy Park. Boutique hotels like the South Congress Hotel and Hotel San José offer more than just lodging; these venues epitomize the Austin aesthetic and act as a home-away-from-home for locals to gather, co-work and enjoy live music. To impress your date, Erin recommends Watertrade, the hidden, Japanese-style cocktail bar attached to OTOKO in the South Congress Hotel.

With a friendly, yet direct approach, her adaptability shines in offmarket collaborations, new home builds, and navigating complexities in luxury real estate throughout Austin.

Libby loves Mueller, which used to be the site of Austin’s original airport, and has been transformed into an incredible mixed-use, urban-suburban neighborhood just east of the University of Texas and super close to Downtown. The neighborhood has 140 acres of green space, and tons of conveniences for modern living. It is known for being incredibly kid-friendly, with many parks, two pools, multiple family restaurants, a Sunday farmer’s market and KUTX’s “Rock the Park” concert series in late spring. A big draw for families to Mueller is the popular children’s museum, the Thinkery, which, unbeknownst to many, has a preschool! Libby adores the teachers, staff and convenience of Little Thinkers Preschool, where both of her children attended preschool.

PURPLE PARADISE in Rosedale

Stella Masterston, local design aficionado and curator of the website, Instagram account (@CharmingAustinTexas), and YouTube channel, Charming Austin Texas shares, “This whimsical early 1940's cottage in the beautiful Rosedale neighborhood is the epitome of charm! From the unique exterior detailing, the fantastic, bold color choices, and the gorgeous spring flowers blanketing the yard – this home truly has it all!”

Homeowner Lucinda Hutson shares that her casita, aptly named “La Morada” (the little purple House), was painted this vibrant hue as an homage to her grandmother who loved all shades of purple.

“My casita is inspired by my love and travels to Mexico and the art of many local artisans over the years,” Hutson said.

She transformed her cottage into a “Texican” paradise, which she notes, “is surrounded by lush gardens brimming with a wild array of fragrant herbs, colorful flowers, native and exotic plants, and tropical vines.” Hutson describes her property’s exterior to include outside “rooms” featuring a mermaid grotto, a Mexican courtyard, a tequila cantina and a precious outdoor artisan cabin, each theme with its own landscape.

From Post Office to Beloved Neighborhood Hub

WITH A FRENCH RESTAURANT, BOOKSTORE, AND SPECIALTY GROCER, PLUS MORE TO COME, THIS HYDE PARK LOCALE HAS BECOME ONE OF AUSTIN’S MOST DESIRABLE DESTINATIONS

In the heart of Hyde Park, an architectural transformation has breathed new life into a once-vibrant community space for the historic neighborhood that has held onto its charm of yesteryears. The location that once held the Hyde Park U.S. Post Office has been reimagined by the visionary architects Side Angle Side and Thoughtbarn into a bustling hub of gastronomy and camaraderie.

The adaptive reuse project, which spanned over a year of meticulous renovation, saw the rebirth of a substantial portion of the post office building, originally built in 1967. Side Angle Side transformed the structure into a multifaceted 3,500-square-foot specialty market, bar, and cafe — Bureau de Poste at Tiny Grocer — that opened in October 2023.

Arthur Furman of Side Angle Side emphasizes the project’s dedication to preserving the design that defined the original post office’s character. “The Hyde Park U.S. Post Office had been an important neighborhood hub since the 1960s, so we were especially careful to keep the integrity and spirit of the mid-century-utilitarian design,” explains Furman.

The project’s evolution took an unexpected turn during the design process when owner Steph Steele advocated for including the 1,500-square-foot dining courtyard. Once an unassuming asphalt loading area, this space now flourishes as a vibrant outdoor café and wine garden, adorned with antique red brick paving, live oak trees, and a steel trellis. Adding a stucco restroom building and a linear steel planter provided the necessary infrastructure to transform the former loading area into an outdoor oasis.

Annie-Laurie Grabiel of Side Angle Side elaborates on the team’s approach to honoring the building’s heritage while fostering community inclusivity. “Historically, post offices are centrally-located community hubs, so we understood the importance of maintaining the spirit of community in Tiny Grocer and Bureau de Poste,” says Grabiel.

Collaborating closely with Steele, the architects aimed to cultivate an ambiance that exudes warmth and hospitality, resonating with the neighborhood’s ethos.

The architectural homage to the original post office shows in the meticulous preservation and integration of its structural elements. The exposed concrete floors and open-web joists, adorned with industrial lighting, evoke a sense of raw authenticity. At the same time, earthy materials such as terracotta tiles and stained wood accents pay homage to the building’s historical context. Furman reflects on the project’s challenges, particularly the unexpected expansion of the restaurant. “The idea to make a full-service restaurant didn’t come up until halfway through the design process,” recalls Furman. “

It was originally planned to be a simple grocery and café, similar to the South Congress location.”

Creating a courtyard was a difficult feat, but essential for outdoor dining and capacity. Through innovative design solutions, including the addition of a steel arbor with banquet seating and extra detached restroom facilities, the outdoor dining space seamlessly integrates into the project, now serving as its vibrant heart.

Next door lies First Light Books, an independent bookshop that opened last

tribeza.com | MAY/JUNE 2024 97

August and has already become a beloved community center. Thoughtbarn converted a 2,500-square-foot windowless brick box that previously contained the post office’s back-of-house into a bright, inviting space with an extensive book collection, lounge areas, and cafe. Generous steel windows, skylights to help define different areas of the store, and a custom oak storefront entry with a tiled porch achieve this beautiful haven. Visitors are invited to linger over a morning coffee or glass of wine, discover books that open up new worlds, and cozy up in the back corner to share stories with their children.

“The vision of First Light was born of years of travel spent lingering in the quiet corners of independent bookstores the world over,” says First Light owner, Robin Bruce. “Aesthetically, we wanted the space to echo what we all love about bookshops while elevating the hospitality and design experience. The stained glass window from our neighbor Blue Moon Glassworks is both whimsical and reverential, and the custom table and freestanding shelves by Muhly design studio ground the space in warmth and welcome.”

With Bureau de Poste at Tiny Grocer and First Light Books now anchoring the space, the overall location serves as a nucleus for community engagement—including shopping, dining, reading, and wellness. Moogie Pilates just opened behind the bookshop, and Allday Pizza will soon open beside it. The original exterior shell of the post office will house all of these exciting additions to the Hyde Park neighborhood, rounding out the intimate yet bustling community center.

The Hyde Park U.S. Post Office’s transformation speaks to the power of architectural ingenuity and community collaboration. By marrying the site’s rich history with contemporary functionality, Side Angle Side Architects, alongside Thoughtbarn, have not only revitalized a beloved neighborhood landmark, but also cultivated a welcoming space where past and present converge.

UNVEILING THE ARTISTRY OF THE MOSAIC WORKSHOP

STEP INTO THE COLORFUL REALM OF THE MOSAIC Workshop, a studio nestled in East Austin, where artistry and community converge. Founders Carmen Rangel and J Muzacz started the workshop out of a need for more accessible art spaces in Austin. With weekly free and low-cost mosaic classes and group projects, the studio has fostered a nurturing environment for creativity, camaraderie, and skill development.

“Through this collaborative process, some people found a new hobby or creative outlet, others made friends, and some developed expertise in a new medium which would open doors to bigger and better opportunities in the future,” shared Muzacz.

Collaborations with local organizations like the Mexican American Cultural Center (MACC) and the Caminos program have resulted in artworks such as the La Mujer public mural outside of MACC, honoring Latina women like beloved singer Selena and Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor.

Their mosaic art series, the “Legends,” further amplifies underrepresented voices and stories through grassroots public art projects, with 37 portraits of cultural leaders completed to date. These projects, in collaboration with organizations like Latinitas, American Youthworks, Ghisallo Cycling and Texas Folklife, celebrate influential figures, particularly women and leaders of color, who have left a lasting impact on Austin and beyond.

Their latest mural at CapMetro’s McKalla Station, stretching across 600 square feet, pays tribute to the passionate fans of Austin FC. Crafted from glass tiles meticulously placed by hundreds of volunteers, this mural stands

as a testament to the remarkable power of community collaboration in creating something extraordinary for our city.

Since relocating to a new and expansive space at 729 Airport Blvd., The Mosaic Workshop offers beginners the chance to delve into foundational aspects like tile cutting, design layout, and grouting, in introductory classes. Meanwhile, advanced workshops introduce more intricate concepts, including color theory, composition, and the integration of mixed media into mosaic creations.

“I am thrilled to expand our workshop offerings, catering to people of all levels, ages and abilities,” said Muzacz.

As The Mosaic Workshop expands its reach, it remains committed to fostering creativity, community, and meaningful storytelling. Through innovative projects and inclusive workshops, the studio continues to inspire individuals on their artistic journey, making mosaic art accessible to all.

GIVING WITH PASSION AND PURPOSE

WLOCAL TELEVISION HOST, TREVOR SCOTT, SHARES HIS EXPERIENCE BUILDING CONNECTIONS AND SERVING THE COMMUNITY’S NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS

e sat down on the patio of the charming Brentwood Social House on a Friday afternoon to chat with Trevor Scott, the delightfully friendly co-host of the local lifestyle television show, “We Are Austin.” Each morning, viewers can feel his positive energy radiate from the CBS Austin studio straight into their homes. Scott is vocal about his passion for community service both on camera and on his social media platforms, supporting a wide variety of local nonprofit organizations. With such a busy work life, we wanted to learn how Scott maintains his dedication to giving back — and gather advice on how to find accessible service projects for a variety of interests.

We asked the most difficult question first — “How do we find time to volunteer?” In today’s hustle culture of constantly being on-the-go while juggling work and family, it can be difficult to “make” time. “At the end of the day, if the thing that you want to give your time back to isn't something that genuinely fills you up, it will only empty you more,” explained Scott. "So, you really

want to go into something with a passion for it. Scott also believes that volunteering offers the chance to tap into a new community with a broad mix of perspectives.

“It's putting you in circles with people who are like-minded and passionate.” said Scott, “You're doing something very good for the community, but you're also making connections in town with people you're seeing in other rooms of generosity all year long.”

As for finding the right organization, he noted that starting with something small and convenient might be the right move.

“I think you start with what's important to you,” said Scott. “Look for that because it's probably right in your community. I like the idea of trying to be hyper-local, especially with giving back, so maybe it's not a gigantic organization, but it's your neighborhood's park.”

The satisfaction of giving comes with great rewards. “You're doing something very productive, and we can all thrive from that. You're doing it to give back, but you're clearly getting back, too.”

WHERE TREVOR GIVES BACK

AUSTIN HUMANE SOCIETY

Since 1952, AHS has transformed the lives of animals through life-saving programs that find animals homes, serve animals and people in times of crisis, and prevent future homelessness through spay and neuter. It is also the longest standing no-kill shelter in Austin. austinhumanesociety.org

TREVOR SHARES: “Animals are very important to me. My precious dog, Dot, is from Austin Humane Society. The Humane Society has a very small staff. They do their absolute best, but they need people to do things like grab a leash on your lunch hour and walk some dogs, while you get out in the sunshine. It’s a win-win. You're giving the pups a break from the shelter, and you're getting some exercise. In the spring, it’s also ‘kitten season’. The Austin Humane Society gets overrun with newborn kittens, and they often need people to help bottle feed the young kittens. Volunteering [with the animals] is so satisfying for everyone, and it’s a great place to start giving time.”

“ I like the idea of trying to be hyper-local, especially with giving back, so maybe it's not a gigantic organization, but it's your neighborhood's park ”

OUT YOUTH

Founded in 1990, Out Youth serves Central Texas LGBTQIA+ youth and their allies with programs and services to ensure these promising young people develop into happy, healthy, successful adults. They host a variety of programs and services for youth and provide training and resources for parents, teachers, and community members. outyouth.org

TREVOR SHARES: “As a queer person in Austin, Out Youth is something that's very, very important to me. It really meets these kids where they are. It's super important that kids, particularly of a certain age, are being met with open arms and resources. Out Youth’s staff is very small, so this is the type of organization you can just write a check to and know that they can put that money towards their programming that provides suicide prevention and counseling that's very, very important.”

“ It's super important that kids, particularly of a certain age, are being met with open arms and resources ”

MOBILE LOAVES AND FISHES

This organization has served Austin’s homeless neighbors since 1998. Their fleet of trucks venture out daily to provide food, clothing, and other life-sustaining items. Additionally, MLF developed the transformative residential program, Community First! Village, a 51-acre master planned neighborhood that provides affordable, permanent housing for men and women coming out of chronic homelessness. MLF also created the Community Works program to provide opportunities to earn a dignified income, while developing new skills. mlf.org

TREVOR SHARES: “Mobile Loaves and Fishes is an organization with whom I have been deeply involved. This was my springboard, my stepping stone into service in Austin. I have done hundreds of food runs where you load up the truck with food, and you go out and you feed people. I’ve also helped build some of their facilities at Community First.”

“Mobile Loaves and Fishes is doing the work in a few different ways. In a very practical, immediate way, through their food trucks, they’re literally feeding people who are hungry. On the other end with Community First, they are working on the systemic issues that lead to homelessness, and they are housing people. They are giving people purpose and pride and integrity. Anybody can go to mlf.org to learn how to volunteer.

BIG BROTHERS, BIG SISTERS OF CENTRAL TEXAS

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Texas matches children ages 6 and older with caring adults who serve as mentors and advocates. They serve approximately 800 children in Travis, Williamson, and Hays County each year. Volunteer mentors commit to working with a child for a full year or more, meeting three or four times each month to help them build skills for lifelong success. bigmentoring.org

TREVOR HAS BEEN A BIG BROTHER FOR THE PAST YEAR, AND SHARES: “First, I should note that it is a huge commitment, so in terms of being an easy, approachable, accessible volunteering experience, it’s more like a life decision versus just picking up a small job on the weekend and helping out here and there. But, the need is so great, and the impact is so great, so it’s very important to these families. There are still so many boys that are on the waitlist [for a Big Brother] and just not enough men in Austin [volunteering] to handle them all. Big Brothers, Big Sisters wants you to be present with your Little. The two of you decide what activities are going to be worth your time. It's really all about hanging out and giving them someone to rely on.”

Dine Among History

Step inside these Austin restaurants located in landmark buildings

If you’re a history buff or a diner who likes the idea of enjoying a wonderful meal in a setting rich with history, enjoy a visit to one of these beloved Austin eateries housed in buildings that have been around for generations.

Cisco’s

A Tex-Mex standard that’s been feeding East Austin for over 60 years, Cisco’s received landmark designation in 2019. Part of the argument in favor of Cisco’s landmark status involves its prominence in Texas politics — the landmark application pointed out the fact that Cisco’s was a favorite meeting spot for former Austin mayors, Texas governors, and even President Lyndon B. Johnson. ciscosaustin.com

Hillside Farmacy

As its name suggests, Hillside Farmacy — a farm-to-table restaurant in East Austin that specializes in local ingredients — inhabits a space that once served as a neighborhood drugstore. The beautiful building dates back to the 1920s, when Dr. Ulysses S. Young, who was one of only a handful of Black pharmacists working in Austin at the time, purchased the property and operated Hillside Drugstore. The drugstore remained in business until the 1970s, and subsequent tenants included a barber shop, a bookstore, and a sandwich shop. The Hillside Farmacy team transformed the space into a restaurant in 2011, and the building, which is still owned by the Young family, became an official Historical Landmark in 2019. hillsidefarmacy.com

Mattie's

The South Austin oasis known as Mattie’s leaves a deep footprint in Austin’s hospitality scene. The restaurant can be found inside an 1890s farmhouse that was purchased in 1916 by Henry Faulk and his wife Martha, also known as “Mattie.” The Faulks turned their South Austin property into a mini-farm, growing fresh vegetables in their gardens and raising chickens, cows, and other livestock. In 1946, Henry and Mattie’s daughter Mary turned the farmhouse into a restaurant called Green Pastures, where she could use the produce grown on-site to create dishes inspired by Southern and global cuisines. Green Pastures served Austinites until 2016 when it became Mattie’s. Now, Mattie’s is widely regarded as one of Austin’s best places for weekend brunch, with its famous milk punch, locally-grown produce, a beautiful setting with antique architecture, roving peacocks (yes, there are plenty at Green Pastures), and hearty, flavorful fare. mattiesaustin.com

Moonshine Grill

No conversation about historic restaurants in Austin would be complete without Moonshine Grill, which is found in a building so vintage that it predates the city of Austin itself. The structures at 303 Red River Street were originally built as a dry goods store, a carriage house, a “Sunday House,” where rural travelers could stay when in town for church services, and a saloon by the founder of the Waterloo Compound — a community that evolved into what we now know as Austin — and his daughter and son-in-law. The complex was home to many different businesses over the years, and when Moonshine took over in 2003, they were determined to maintain as much historic integrity as possible. Lamberts, the polished downtown BBQ joint, occupies the J.P. Schneider Store, which was built on West 2nd Street in 1877 by Jacob Schneider, a German immigrant who made Confederate ammunition during the Civil War before becoming an errand boy for the Union Army. Schneider’s business on West 2nd was a popular dry goods store that operated consistently until 1933. After that, a wide array of shops, galleries, and other ventures inhabited the space, and Lamberts opened there in 2006. lambertsaustin.com

Dirty Martin's Place

UT students past and present join longtime Austinites in their love for Dirty Martin’s Place, an old-school burger joint that has occupied the same building on The Drag since 1926. When it originally opened as Martin’s KumBak, this restaurant was so bare-bones that it featured only eight bar stools for seating and actual dirt floors. When the concrete foundation that still stands today was poured during the 1950s, regulars started referring to Martin’s KumBak as “Dirty’s” as a loving nod to those humble beginnings, and the nickname stuck so fiercely that the owners officially changed the name to “Dirty Martin’s Place.”

Dirty Martin’s recently thwarted a potential shutdown and relocation when Project Connect, the light-rail system helmed by CapMetro that was initially supposed to cut through the property, opted to change its proposed route and keep Dirty’s safe on Guadalupe Street. dirtymartins.com

The Tavern

A popular old-school pub, The Tavern has been serving frosty brews to locals since 1933… although rumor has it that they had a bit of a head start by operating as a secret bar during the Prohibition Era. The building first came to life as a grocery store in 1916, but the architect took design inspiration from alehouses he came across in Germany, so The Tavern was destined to become a neighborhood watering hole. The Tavern’s long tenure on West 12th Street has also led to its unofficial designation as Austin’s most haunted bar. Drop in for a beer sometime and ask the bartender to tell you about “Emily,” and you’ll get a very entertaining ghost story. tavernaustin.com

Clay Pit

A popular modern Indian restaurant just north of the Capitol, Clay Pit is located inside the Bertram Building, a structure originally built by German immigrant Rudolph Bertram in 1866 as a trading post. This building is chock-full of secrets and ghost stories, in part due to the fact that Bertram built an intricate network of tunnels underneath that led to brothels. Clay Pit is one of several restaurants that have occupied the building, and it remains a major draw for fans of bold Indian cuisine, as well as fans of the supernatural. claypit.com

Lutie's at the Commodore Perry Estate

In 1928, an affluent real estate developer known as Edgar Howard “Commodore” Perry noticed a plot of empty land near the Hancock Golf Course and decided to turn it into a beautiful European-style estate with lush gardens and a Gatsby-like manor house. Perry and his wife Lutie threw countless parties at their elaborate home, but after they sold off the property in the 1940s, it spent the next several decades being used as schools and educational centers. In 2012, an elaborate restoration project began, and the property reopened in 2020 as Commodore Perry Estate, a luxury hotel with a widely-celebrated restaurant, Lutie’s, a visually-stunning New American destination with an expert blend of original design features and luxe upgrades, a robust menu featuring locally-grown and raised Texas ingredients, and exquisite views of the gardens. luties.com

The Driskill Grill

It’s tough to think of a better example of a historic Austin restaurant than the Driskill Grill. The Driskill Hotel opened in downtown Austin in 1886, making it the oldest hotel in the city. The hotel’s Romanesque Revival style with plenty of Texan twists — think columns, arches, and intricate molding, but with plenty of mounted bull horns and Lone Star accents everywhere — has turned it into a fascination for generations of architecture buffs, and the hotel restaurant is fully immersed in that aesthetic as well. The Driskill Grill is famous for hosting President Lyndon B. Johnson’s first date with his wife Lady Bird in 1934, and it continues to be a top spot for romantic outings thanks to its grand vintage vibes and its menu of classics that feel fresh and modern.

Scholz Garten

Scholz Garten, a beloved German biergarten and dining hall in downtown Austin, is a prime representation of the wave of German immigrants who came to central Texas in the 19th century. August Scholz, a Civil War veteran originally from Germany, opened this spot in 1866 on a property that used to be a boarding house, and it quickly became a major center for the German community in Austin. Scholz Garten continues to serve steins of German beer, brats and pretzels and schnitzel, and a welcoming energy that explains why it’s the oldest continuously-operating restaurant in Texas.

Downtown Austin Gamer’s Paradise

MCWALTERS COLLABORATIVE EXECUTED UNIQUE CLIENT GOALS IN THE DESIGN OF THIS AUSTIN LUXURY CONDO

WHEN A DISCERNING GAMER, INVESTOR, AND SOFTWARE

developer in his 20s purchased a three-bedroom condo in downtown Austin, he sought out McWalters Collaborative to ensure the space was designed around his interests, including spending time with friends.

For McWalters Collaborative’s principals Tom McWalters and Lindsay Maki, it’s not merely about creating visually stunning spaces but understanding each client’s unique needs and desires. This philosophy is the cornerstone of their approach, often guiding them beyond traditional architectural norms. This project, led by Maki with meticulous attention to detail, reflects the evolving nature of modern living.

The young man had clear priorities distinct from those of their usual clientele. “It’s usually about wanting something beautiful,” says Maki. “He wanted it to be comfortable and functional — spoken like a true engineer. The ability to entertain people was also a big priority.”

The challenge was to navigate the idiosyncrasies of the condo’s layout, which featured a sprawling, open living area with unconventional dimensions. The client’s vast at-home activities meant forgoing traditional furnishings for space-efficient solutions to accommodate a pool table, an antique chess set, gaming equipment, and the ability to fly a drone inside.

To fulfill the client’s vision, Maki and her team embarked on a journey of customization and innovation. They crafted bespoke millwork to delineate functional zones within the expansive living area, seamlessly integrating a screening room, dining/pool table area, and bar. The result? A harmonious blend of intimacy and openness tailored to the client’s lifestyle — one which requires specific spaces for his projects that don’t close off the larger, open space for entertaining guests.

The project was about more than just aesthetics. “We made it energy-efficient, and put in controls and all the automation, as well as a very sophisticated security system,” explains Maki. She embraced the client’s evolving interests and hobbies throughout the process, leaving room for future exploration and expansion. For example, currently, most of his overnight guests are single guy friends, so two extra-long twin beds were selected for one of the bedrooms. However, the client appreciated that he could move them together to create a king-sized bed one day, should his circumstances change. From his penchant for games to his new undertaking of building CPUs, which he took up amid the design process, the client’s dynamic lifestyle informed every element of the design.

In the vibrant landscape of Austin, this gamer’s paradise demonstrates the power of collaboration, innovation, and unwavering dedication to client satisfaction. McWalters Collaborative considers it a privilege to facilitate the transformation of spaces and the lives they touch, one project at a time.

A Journey to Create Youthful, Hydrated Skin

LOCAL HUSBAND-AND-WIFE DUO LAUNCH THEIR AKINYI SKIN CARE BRAND, BLENDING THEIR IDEAL MIX OF NURTURING INGREDIENTS

PHOTOGRAPH BY ROMINA OLS0N

Dissatisfied with countless skin care products on the market, Sheila Naya and JD Simon, a local husbandand-wife duo, set forth to create the perfect moisturizer themselves. With an entrepreneurial spirit and motivation to find the exact formula to treat a multitude of skin issues, Naya and Simon worked together to launch their brand, AKINYI, earlier this year.

“As I grow older, my skin has become really dry, so in the morning, Sheila and I were in the bathroom with different lotions and oils, rubbing them together just trying to get the right hydration for our skin,” says Simon. “That’s pretty much how this idea started… creating our own product to keep our skin looking young and moisturized.”

After years of mixing products in their own Austin apartment, the duo went out on the journey to create their ideal facial moisturizer. They solidified a partnership with a scientist to create their exact formula, a journey that took a year of back-and-forth to ensure the end result had the exact consistency to work well through all seasons. Ultimately, they settled on a product that seals in hydration and safeguards the skin from environmental damage.

ceramides, essential oils such as jojoba oil, and antioxidant vitamins like E and C.

“Then, we have Niacinamide, which is a very good ingredient when it comes to shrinking your pores, and for people who have hyperpigmentation and eczema spots, vitamin C helps to lighten,” adds Naya. As for their secret weapon? Naya divulges that it’s pearl extract, “a nice ingredient to make your skin look youthful and supple and radiant.”

Naya and Simon designed the product to be sensitive for all skin types but also for all age groups and genders, as well.

The AKINYI moisturizer aims to address three areas. “We want to nourish your skin; we want to heal your skin; we want to rejuvenate your skin,” shares Naya.

The moisturizing cream includes key ingredients such as collagen, which Naya notes, “helps with wrinkles and those fine lines, making your skin look youthful.” AKINYI contains premium fatty acids, including

“You don’t really see a lot of men that really care about their skin,” adds Simon, “but as you get older [it’s beneficial to] develop some type of routine.”

“We also wanted the scent to be as unisex as possible because everyone loves sandalwood; everyone likes clean scents,” adds Naya.

The brand’s name, AKINYI, originates from Naya’s father’s Tribe in Kenya.

“In the Luo Tribe in Kenya, if you’re a girl and you are born early in the morning, your name is Akinyi”, explains Naya, whose middle name is Akinyi. The product design gives a nod to the idea of waking up early in the morning with lovely, supple, youthful looking skin.

As for the packaging, Naya explains how her middle name carries through all details. “It’s yellow like the sun, and then black like the founders,” she explains. “And if you look at the logo, there’s a little ring that symbolizes the sun, too.”

It is clear that careful thought has been put into every aspect of the AKINYI brand.

Creating a Bigger Life

Advice on life and love from Kristin Armstrong

Dear Kristin,

How can someone create a “bigger” life? Instead of dreaming and wishing and watching — I want to start doing, but after a lifetime of putting other people first-and doing what others wanted (or thinking that’s what they wanted), I’m not sure how to even figure out what I want or how to get it. I don’t want to make radical changes — just have more experiences and make my life more interesting and yes, “bigger.”

Adventurous. Free. Authentic. In flow. Relaxed. Passionate. Purposeful. Strong. Balanced. Curious. Abundant. Connected. Beautiful. Confident. Capable. Generous. You will know the words that most resonate with you because you will feel a lightness, an opening in your chest when you come upon the right ones.

Once you have your list, it can be really fun and ex-

of your life exactly as you wish them to be. This lifts your energy into a receptive state. Most people think you must see something to believe it, when really it is the other way around — you must believe something in order to see it.

Believe it to see it. Feel it first.

The spot you are in is perfectly poised for transformation because that feeling you feel stirring inside you is desire. After many years of pleasing or caretaking others, it can be an interesting shift to consider what would be pleasing to you, or what it would look like to take good care of you. Congratulations to you for getting all the way to right here.

The thing about desire is that it has to be met with belief — belief that things are possible for you.

My first recommendation for you is to begin a daily meditation practice, 10 or 15 minutes of quieting your mind. This practice will help you establish a more regular state of alignment, increasing your belief, which is the fuel for your desire.

If we were working together in my office, I would ask you, “How do you want to feel? How do you want to feel in your body, in your relationships, in your career, in your creative pursuits?”

Make a list of how you want to feel. Creative. Inspired.

“The thing about desire is that it has to be met with belief — belief that things are possible for you.”

tremely powerful to hunt down some images that represent these feelings, then put them together to create a vision board.

Have your vision board ready when you finish your daily meditation session. As you return to your regular breathing and gently flutter your eyes open, keep that hazy focus and allow yourself to take in your vision. As you breathe and gaze at your board, begin to really conjure the feelings that come to mind with your images. Allow your imagination to create the emotional experience for you. Let the feelings amplify. You will literally feel your frequency rising as you imagine aspects

You are a spiritual being having a human experience. You were designed to create. Creations are born of desire. I am so excited for you on this next phase of your journey.

With

so much love,
