MArch ARTWORKS Pieces are published and changed each month. The objects are presented with a full description and corresponding dealer’s contact information. Unlike auction sites or other platforms, we empower collectors to interact directly with the member dealers for enquiries and purchases by clicking on the e-mail adress. In order to guarantee the quality of pieces available in the catalogues, objects are systematically validated by all our select members, who are the in-house experts. Collectors can therefore decide and buy with complete confidence. In addition to this, the Tribal Art Society proposes a seven-day full money back return policy should the buyer not feel totally satisfied with a purchase. Feel free to ask the price if the artwork is listed with a price on request.

Object Presented by: Julien Flak M.: +33 6 84 52 81 36 E.: contact@galerieflak.com
The Gan, neighbors of the Lobi, reside in Southwest Burkina Faso. The depiction of the Torfan serpent / snake is the central theme of Gan art. Torfan is a mythical animal whose strength and power are embodied in metal. One who owns a Torfan gets the power to fight evil. The theme of the serpent is expressed here through the undulating movement of the body. The head of the animal is superbly stylized. The exceptional quality of this ornament (armring or bracelet) suggests that it belonged to a high-ranking member of the Gan society. The royal family and dignitaries attached great importance to the majesty of their belongings and the quality of the cast metal. The refinement and harmony of the composition are remarkable. This ornament comes from the private collection of Bruno Gay. He acquired it from late Parisian dealer Maine Durieu over a decade ago.

Akan comb
Comb duafe Akan People Ghana 19th to very early 20th century Wood Height: 28 cm Provenance: Olga Hirshhorn Price:
SOLD Object Presented by: Laurent Granier M.: +33 (0)6 42791313 E: granierancient@gmail.com
In Ghana, elaborate combs such as this one were gifts from Akan men to women to commemorate special events, such as puberty celebrations, weddings, or births. This example’s iconography informs the reason for its commission: Crowned by a female head with a typical young girl "horns" coiffure, it echoes the highly conventionalized akua bafertility figures. The comb underscores a protection purpose with, in the middle section, a spider biting a snake on one side and a rifle on the other side. This fine work comes from the collection of the late Olga Hirshhorn. Hirshhorn collected works by Willem de Kooning, Henry Moore, Rodin, Picasso, Man Ray, etc. as well as works from Asia and Africa, in particular jewelry. In 1995 she donated over 600 works to the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, DC., estimated at the time to be worth about 10 million dollars. The comb is in very good condition and it is mounted on an "old gold" custom base by Romain Laforêt. I date it to the end of the 19th or very early 20th Century.

YORUBA TWIN FIGURE
Ere Ibeji twin figure Oshogbo, Yoruba Nigeria First part of the 20th century Carved wood, beads Height: 26 cm Price: 1.200 euros
The statuettes linked to twin worship, are called ere ibeji in the Yoruba language: ere signifying a sacred image, ibi born and eji a double. Symbols of prestige, wealth and fecundity, ere ibeji figures also guaranteed the perpetuation of future generations. These effigies of ancestors were an integral part of everyday activities, punctuating the family life of the Yoruba. Subject to very codified rituals, ere ibeji figures were pampered, with their care including feeding, washing and oiling. They were considered to be living beings, a reincarnation of ancestor-twins. Representations always showed them at the peak of their strength and power in adulthood.

Object Presented by: Julien Flak M.: +33 6 84 52 81 36 E.: contact@galerieflak.com
The territory of the Chamba lies close to the border between Nigeria and Cameroon. Forming small, centralized states (Donga, Suntaï, Takum…), their villages were fortified, holding out against the Fulani in the 19th century. According to C.K. Meek (see The Northern Tribes of Nigeria, London 1931, pp. 328412), the king could appear only after the sun had set. Among the favors he could bestow was that of obtaining rain. François Neyt notes (Mumuye, 2006 chapter 1, pp. 20-22) that the Chamba notably carve schematic figures; these objects share so many affinities with Mumuye statues that there are times when trying to distinguish them may prove challenging.

Ethiopian Shield
Shield with crucifixes Ethiopia 19th century Diam.: 56 cm Price: 2.200 euros
The reason as to why this has the attached crosses is lost for now but one can surmise that it would have marked out the individual who owned this as being an important person and someone of stature in society. Ethiopia converted to christianity in 330 A.D. and was one of the first regions in the world to do so. It is interesting to note that this is an early form of cross and can be found on the Armorial du Héraut Berry, c. 1450 and in a slightly different form the ‘Occitan’ cross from the 12th century. For a plain example see the British museum Af1868,1001.32, collected in 1868. One cross has been lost.

Nkole shield
Shield Nkole (Nyankore), Runyaruguru, Nyambo, Hunde, Havu or Hutu Eastern DRC, Southern Uganda or Rwanda 19th to early 20th century Wicker cane and wood Height: 77 cm Provenance: Private Italian collection Price: 1.200 euros
This fine elliptic shield comes from one of the Bantu groups of the interlake region of East Africa where Lake Victoria, lake Edward, Lake Kivu and Tanganika make the boarder between DRC, Rwanda, Burundi and Tanzania. German explorer Adolph Friedrich von Mecklenbourg documented similar shieds in a procession, in Rwanda, in 1910 ("In the Heart of Africa", 1910. See also a photo from him in the Hamburg ethnographic museum in "Boucliers", Musée Barbier-Mueller , p. 112) The beautiful shield is made of wood and is covered in rattan with the typical conical wood boss Umbo at the center. It carries an unidentified collection number and comes from an italian estate. It is in very good condition and the patina is ranging from reddish brown to black with some parts incrusted. The piece is mounted on an "old gold" custom base by Romain Laforêt. I date it to the end of the 19th or very early 20th Century.

A beautiful object in the hand, this instrument is aesthetically satisfying from all directions. A depiction of an ancestor figure is found atop the body of this lute whose posture is akin to that of stone sculptures dating back a thousand years. The Batak are some of the greatest musicians of Indonesia.

Abelam Figure
Figure Abelam Foothills of the Prince Alexander Mountains, East Sepik Province, Papua New Guinea 19th century Wood Height: 38 cm Provenance: Chris Boylan, Sydney, Private Canadian Collection Craig DeLora, New Jersey Michael Auliso, California. Price: 7.500 euros

Archaic early Abelam pieces like this are very hard to find. This male figure is special for a number of reasons. The arched body and curved swept back legs look like the figure is ascending. It has whimsical and quirky qualities but is very sophisticated at the same time. I've found it to be one of those sculptural pieces you can look at under a light from different angles and keep seeing something new. The surface is layered and encrusted with areas of visible red pigments underneath. The cubistic appendages on the back are highly stylized Cockatoo birds as could also be the projections on the headdress. This piece is unique as is a miniature version of the oldest known type of Abelam "Wapinyam" (Child of the Yam) large commynity figures. I found a similar figure dating from before 1930 in Margaret Mead's collection of Abelam art at the American Museum of Natural History (see gallery website)

HIGHLANDS FIGURE, PAPUA NEW GUINEA
Large Timbu wara figure Highlands, Papua New Guinea Coil-woven rattan and plant fiber, carved wood, ochres and pigments Height: 104 cm Provenance: Chris Boylan, Sydney Price: 1.200 euros
As stated by The Art Gallery of New South Wales in Australia, spirit cults of various types, generally associated with fertility and the wellbeing of humans, permeated the New Guinea Highlands in pre-contact times. The Wiru of the Southern Highlands region made flat woven figures called 'timbu wara' as part of the 'timbu' cult. By the mid 1960s the 'timbu' cult had all but disappeared. In the Wiru language 'timbu' means 'sky', suggesting a connection with the powerful sky spirits. 'Wara' has differing interpretations, meaning both 'spear' and 'guardian', indicating power, protection and perhaps even aggression. Indeed, these spirits of the sky, although having no direct interaction with humans, were feared; they could affect the human condition adversely and were to be respected and, at times, honored. Anthropologists Pamela Stewart and Andrew Strathern explain that “the 'timbu' cult was aimed at restoring ecological balance and fertility to humans, pigs and the land.”

In the 1980s several Wiru informants suggested a connection between disastrous events – earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and deadly frosts – and the 'timbu' cult. They said that at such times, when elders feared nature was 'out of balance', they made 'timbu wara' to appease and placate the 'timbu' spirit; later, when nature was again in balance, the figures were buried, returning them to the earth. This woven figure is an exceptionally large and visually striking example.

Kanak club
Club porowa ra maru Kanak people New Caledonia Mid 19th century Wood Height: 71 cm Provenance: French private collection Price: 1.800 euros
The distinctively shaped porowa ra maru, or “bird head” clubs of New Caledonia were prestigious objects created for use by Chiefs. The club symbolized wealth and high rank and could have been used in ceremonies of exchange between Kanak clans. Some scholars have suggested that the image instead represents the head of a sea turtle with its projecting, beaklike, mouth. The thin, delicate tips of the beaks are extremely fragile and the present one has an old chip which I think doesn't distract as is ancient and only visible from one side. Contrary to many, the present club has great age, as attested by the "melted"wear on the handle and a deep, glossy patina throughout. The club comes from a French estate and sits on a dynamic base by Romain Laforêt.

Thule Figure
Figure Thule Culture, Ancient Eskimo Alaska Prior to the 18th century Carved wood Height: 10 cm Price: 900 euros

Stylization of features, alliance of naturalism and symbolism, sobriety and a hieratic quality – these are the key features characterizing ancient Eskimo art, whose parallels with modern art are striking. Fascinating manifestos tracing the development of culture and survival in the environs of the North Pole, ancient Eskimo cultures have left an artistic legacy in the form of marine ivory or, as is the case here, wooden sculptures. According to William Fitzhugh, the purpose of these enigmatic human figurines remains unclear. Analogies drawn from the historic period suggest that perhaps they were made as children’s toys or dolls, for use in fertility ceremonies, or for calling upon the “masters” of game animals. Other ethnographic parallels recorded in the early 20th century demonstrate that human figurines could be used by their owners as personal assistants and spiritual helpers to capture prey or as guardians to safeguard humankind from those physical and spiritual dangers encountered in the landscape.
