Paris Tribal: a second edition celebrates Paris as capital of tribal arts Created at the initiative of tribal art dealers from the district of Beaux-Arts/Saint-Germain-des-Prés in the spring of 2014, Paris Tribal is to be held this year from 9 to 11 April 2015. The first edition was well received by the public and found its place in the landscape of events devoted to tribal art: French, European and American collectors were all present for this new occasion, proving that Paris is recognised as a pivotal centre for this specialty. This year, some twenty galleries have chosen to participate in the event, which is to combine exhibitions around themes as well as exceptional pieces. All fields of tribal art are to be covered, including arts from Africa, America, Asia, Indonesia and Oceania. Here, masks are to be found alongside shields, clubs face ancestors, locks and amulets echo drums, reliquary skulls, sceptres and spatulas intersect and form an endless inventory where ritual works become works of art paying lively tribute to the history of our origins. Location From 9 to 11 April 2015, Beaux-Arts / Saint-Germain-des-Prés district Rue des Beaux-Arts, Rue Bonaparte, Rue Guénégaud, Rue Jacques Callot, rue Saint-Benoît, rue de Seine, Rue Visconti, Rue Mazarine and Boulevard Raspail. Esquimau - Okvik Alaska Ivory, probably from walrus H. 12.5 cm Former American collection This Okvik figure represents a human torso with an oval head. The features consist of two slit eyes, a thin mouth and a long, straight nose, while the body has engraved markings. These body markings could be a reference to such tattoos as those born by the Okvik people. This object was probably used as a protective charm or amulet.
