With its expressive face and wild positioning of the arms this zoomorphic mortar is a dynamic work of art. 17 Magic Amulet Ramu Papua New Guinea 19th Century Heigth: 17 cm Provenance: Ernst Heinrich, dealer in Stuttgart, Germany. Active before WWII. Price on request

Object presented by: Bruce Frank M.: +1 (0) 917 733 9589 E.: bfrank212@aol.com

This Magic Amulet from Ramu River region in Papua New Guinea is extremely old. The surface is well worn and patinated. Stone carved, these small wooded amulets all bear different characteristics. The figure, naturalistically carved, has an inviting and expressive face. The large head in proportion to the body is a common Ramu trait, while the ovalness of the head provides a stark contrast to the squareness of the body, emphasized by the free form carved stature of the arms and legs. There is an old native repair to the left arm, which was cracked. The original piece has been attached with native natural plant glues. A hook is visible on the back of the amulets head, where string would have been threaded to attach the amulet to a body or bag.

ELEMA MARUPAI

20 Marupai Charm Elema Culture Papuan Gulf, Papua New Guinea. 19th Century Heigth: 18 cm Provenance: Private Collection Price on request

Object presented by: Bruce Frank M.: +1 (0) 917 733 9589 E.: bfrank212@aol.com

Marupai Charms are ornaments for larger objects. Attached to figures or hooks, these charms were usually made out of coconut shells; however there are rare instances of those made out of wood; such as this example. Stone carved and made pre-contact, this is an early example, distinguished by the large proportion of the head to the rest of the body. The wear and patina is fascinating, as the features have been worn down, but still retain their distinctive features. The patina has also affected the natural color of the wood, giving it an expressive, two faced appearance.
