MUMUYE FIGURE

Iagalagana figure Mumuye Nigeria Early 20th century Carved wood and metal Height : 55,5 cm Publication: Mumuye, François Neyt, 2006 page 105 Price: 1.800 euros

The Mumuye live in the foothills of the Shebshi Mountains near the banks of the Benue in eastern Nigeria. This agrarian people is comprised of three different dialectal groups, and was long unknown to Westerners, who discovered their art only in the late 1960s. The Mumuye used sculptures called Iagalagana in different rituals: the figures played a central role in ancestor worship and in curing ceremonies. They served as intercessors between the spirit world and that of men, and served as proof of the high status of the family that owned them. Jacques Kerchache in L’art Africain, 1988, notes: "[Mumuye] statuary does not depict ancestors but rather incarnates tutelary spirits. Yet, statues reinforce the status and prestige of their owner who, as he holds them in his hands, has a dialogue with them and thus ensures his personal protection." For more information, here is a video about Mumuye art and culture: https://vimeo.com/409909922

BENUE FIGURE

Standing figure Chamba or neighboring people Benue, Nigeria Early 20th century Carved wood and pigments Height: 43 cm Price: 900 euros

Object Presented by: Julien Flak M.: +33 6 84 52 81 36 E.: contact@galerieflak.com

The territory of the Chamba lies close to the border between Nigeria and Cameroon. Forming small, centralized states (Donga, Suntaï, Takum…), their villages were fortified, holding out against the Fulani in the 19th century. According to C.K. Meek (see The Northern Tribes of Nigeria, London 1931, pp. 328-412), the king could appear only after the sun had set. Among the favors he could bestow was that of obtaining rain. François Neyt notes (Mumuye, 2006 chapter 1, pp. 20-22) that the Chamba notably carve schematic figures; these objects share so many affinities with Mumuye statues that there are times when trying to distinguish them may prove challenging.

Tsanghi mask

Duma dance mask. Tsanghi Gabon Beginning of the 20th century. Light wood painted with white pigments (kaolin) and black (fire blackened). Height: 35 cm. Provenance : Old French collection. Price: 3.500 euros

This mask, which represents the face of an idealized woman, wears scarification in a thin horizontal band going from one ear to the other and passing under the nose, full lips, and half-closed, slit eyes. This gives this face an impression of harmony imbued with serenity. The high hairstyle with side plaits recalls the traditional hairstyles worn by the women of this region at the beginning of the 20th century. This type of mask, used in mourning ceremonies, evokes the soul of a young girl. White is, in Gabonese beliefs, the color of reincarnation. Also, the first Westerners to arrive in these regions were taken for ghosts. The dancer, hidden by an ample costume, was often mounted on stilts.

Songye Amulet

Amulet Figure Songye Kasaï, D.R. of the Congo Early 20th Century Wood Height: 12,5 cm Provenance: Drs John and Nicole Ditenfass, New York Jonathan Hope, London Price: 2.400 euros

Object Presented by: Laurent Granier M.: +33 (0)6 42791313 E: granierancient@gmail.com

In Songye culture, different types of amulets, charms and talismans were used as protection against malevolent spirits or black magic. The present type is anthropomorphic and was probably carried around the neck or waist, if I judge by the amount of wear throughout. The holes under the arms also show signs of abrasion, which indicates a cord was passed through, for attachment. The amulet presents some good signs of use and it packs a punch in term of dynamism of the sculpture. And of course it has that "wild" presence one is looking for in a Songye work. Note the great legs and feet, as well as the way the sculptor treated the spine on the back (I am sure some of you will recognize a known hand here). It has a hole for the insertion of magic on the top of the head as well as in the lower belly. Patina is brown and deep throughout and it is in very good condition with some remains of an unknown substance in the eyes. Note such amulets could also be attached to big Songye community wood figure (for example see the Ethnographic museum of Anvers one, Published in "Songye" by Françoise Neyt, p. 134). But again I am pretty convinced this one was used as a personal talisman.

The Batak acquired matchlock and flintlock firearms relatively early by trade with the Dutch and were useful in battle and were considered chiefly status objects as well. These weapons fired round metal balls that were held in special holders that had magical properties in their own right. We see a human face that is likely to be a portrait of an ancestor.

Anyone with a keen eye for ancient New Guinea art will be stopped in its track by this figure, and I am very proud to present it as the oldest type of Massim figure known, to honour the memory of Dr Harry Beran, the legendary Massim art specialist, who recently died. From its iconography it is possible to deduct this figure falls into the category of "sickness figures" or "magician figure" from the Massim region ("The depiction of physical abnormalities in Oceanic art, especially the Massim region of Papua New Guinea, and its distinction from artistic licence", Dr Harry Beran, Pacific Arts Association, April 3-6 2013, unpublished paper) On the present figure the arms are bent backward in a totally abnormal position, the hands are equally distorted, one eye is pullet out and one leg is slightly shorter. Harry Beran (personal communication) agreed that the present Massim figure "probably depicts deformities" and he added that "Figures were made for magic purposes but it is impossible to know without having the information from the owner at the time of collection". We will gladly concur to that prudent position and thus form the hypothesis this is a magician figure, hence made and used to counter the effects of deformities (probably caused by an unknown disease more than magic at the time, and most probably imported by European sailors, sadly) Now when it come to the overall style and age of this piece, I could compare positively the style, stylistic features, the wood and pigments, with six other figures: 3 figures conserved at the British museum and donated in 1895 and 3 conserved at the National Museum of Anthropology of Florence and donated in 1898. From the first group at the British Museum (see photos on our website of figures Oc1895,-296, 297 and 298), all collected in the "Trobriand" and donated by William Whitten in 1895. All of them are about the same size (between 32 and 44 cm), present the same stylistic features - which are easily comparable with more recent Massim figures and one might even have been made by the same sculptor as our (the one on the right)

From the second group at the Florence national Museum of Anthropology (see photos on our website, images taken from the book "Art Papou", Musée de la Vileille Charitée, Marseilles, 2000, p. 130-130), all of these were brought back from "Milne Bay" by A. Scheidel in 1898 and are a bit bigger in size (54 to 59 cm) and we can also find many similar stylistic features. From the overall archaic feel of these figures, which I should repeat here are the oldest examples known in collections, and in comparison to other Massim figural works known, I am tempted to call these "proto-Massim" art (like there is a proto-Dogon art). This not only because of their own archaic style, but because of the stylistic connexions with other cultures, from far away coastal regions of Papua New Guinea. Starting from the Humboldt bay and surrounding types of incised figurative works, followed by the figurative works of Lake Sentani, all the way down to the Massim region... which is also the route followed by proto-Austronesian language and the ancient Asian branch (remember the Dong Son axe found in Sentani) of today's people of Papua new Guinea. The Massim figure is in good condition for its age, some white and dark pigments remain and the surface is oxidized. The ears and nose are pierced, there is an old chip on one foot and on the penis as well as a longitudinal crack on the back (now stable). Custom wood base by Romain Laforêt

Abelam Head

Head Abelam Foot hills of the Prince Alexander mountains, East Sepik Province, Papua New Guinea Early 20th century Wood, pigments Height: 22 cm Provenance: American Estate sale Price : 2.700 euros

Balsa wood heads such as this one were used by Abelam people in the frame of the long Yams harvesting festivals. Placed on poles among the long Yams presented by their proud gardeners, the heads not only symbolized the lineage of the clan and immemorial traditions related to harvesting the long yams (Coupaye) but almost certainly had ties to the not so ancient practice of head hunting (The Abelam people where among the first to halt this practice within the Sepik river basin) The present head is special and excellent in my opinion. I think it is particularly old and archaic, with that extremely large nostril and a projecting mouth, eyes that are just signified and the design on the cheeks which reminds me of the famous Wosera head Ex Marcia and John Friede and Ex De Young Museum, sold by Christie's in 2012. I found the head in a small American estate sale, sitting on this old fashion wood base, together with another very old Papua New Guinea object owned by the same family. I date it from the very early 20th century, not later than 1930, which is old for an Abelam balsa head.

As stated by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the art of the northern Solomon Islands is characterized by stylized human figures known as kokorra. Kokorra is the name of a powerful spirit associated with men's secret societies and masking traditions in the region. One of the distinctive features of Kokorra representations if the bulbous coiffure or ritual headdress (hassebou) formerly worn by local men. This sculpture with a janus face is the upper part of a wooden club or ceremonial paddle.

ANCIENT ESKIMO IMPLEMENT

Ornament / tool – possibly a sinew spinner Punuk Culture or early Thule (ancient Eskimo) Prior to the 17th century Diam.: 4.8 cm Provenance: Ex. private collection, Geneva Ex. private collection, France Price: 2.000 euros

Object Presented by: Julien Flak M.: +33 6 84 52 81 36 E.: contact@galerieflak.com

This object is presumably a sinew spinner as described E. W. Nelson (The Eskimo About Bering Strait, Annual Report, Bureau of American Ethnology, 1899). The raised convex surface bears an incised design which resembles a four-leafed clover. The raised eminence may have been used to hold the sinew during the twisting or spinning. The holes on the rim of the sculpture suggests this sculpture was also used as an ornament, fastened to a piece of garment. A very elegant sculpture from the vast frozen lands of the Arctic...

The Iroquois (now known as Haudenosaunee) Confederacy, a classical matriarchal state, consisted of the Mohawk, Seneca, Onongada, Cayuga, Oneida and Tuscarora Nations. Their ancestral homelands included Northern and Western New York, parts of Ontario and Quebec, and a sphere of influence which extended to Virginia and Illinois. Wood-carved masks were the most distinctive manifestations of Iroquois religious art. The mask shown here is associated with the False Faces, the most prominent Iroquois medicinal society. False face masks were used during communal healing rituals which focused on driving out disease / misfortune and restoring balance. False Face spirits were also said to be called upon in times of personal need. According to Fenton (see "The False Faces of the Iroquois", University of Oklahoma Press, 1987, page 129), this type of mask with a double-spoonmouth falls within the category of the "Doorkeeper's masks". This highly expressive mask is part of our new exhibition: “Faces – from the Visible to the Invisible”. Find out more on www.galerieflak.com
