how to wear denim this fall Over the years, denim has become increasingly popular and evolved to become acceptable attire just about anywhere (save country clubs) and at almost any occasion less than formal. With its rise in popularity, we’ve also seen styles of denim shift drastically. This opens up a world of options, and it can be confusing to decide exactly what your best look is. While there is no style out there that works well for everyone, a few tips are all you really need to help you find your best jeans.

Dressing for your body type and age can make a huge difference when it comes to denim. If you’re ever not sure of a piece, erring on the conservative side will work to your advantage. Take time to try on many styles and get an expert opinion before you take matters into your own hands. With so many shapes and styles out there, it can be confusing to know what brand fits, how and who a label is cut for, and what’s going to flatter your figure. Take time to educate yourself and learn what the best look is for you and you’ll avoid expensive – and potentially embarrassing – mistakes.

Find Your Best Cut Skinny jeans have become ubiquitous and this season they’re hotter than ever! Available in a myriad of colors, washes and textures, it may seem only natural for you to think that there is a pair just right for you. To some extent that may be true, but skinny jeans – despite what you may have heard – are not made for all body types. Skinnies are tight and tapered through the calf and ankle and create a long lean look. Or they can visually make your hips or upper body look larger than they are. Being brutally honest when choosing your jeans can mean the difference between feeling fabulous, or falling flat.

Skinny jeans work best on women who are slim through the hips and thighs, and balanced overall. If you are upper body dominant and slimmer on your bottom half, you can most likely wear skinnies and balance them with a darker top. If you’re a curvy girl, you can still wear skinny jeans but will want to wear a flowing tunic that skims the body and draw the eye upward with the use of jewelry. Miss Me skinny jeans are available at Gigi’s in styles ranging from classic to embellished. Another way to create balance with your skinnies is to only wear them with boots. Boots create a visually heavy look on your bottom half which can balance out a dominant upper body, hourglass or apple shape. If you’re heaviest below the waist – a pear shape – you probably want to avoid the skinny jean. Remember, when in doubt leave it out. fall | 17

If you’re relieved to hear that you aren’t relegated to wearing only skinnies, then you may want to try another hot look for the season: flared legs. A throw back to the ‘70s, today’s flares aren’t quite up to bellbottom proportions. Five-pocket flares can be a fun look that is playful and ready for the weekend. A trouser style with gently flared legs is the perfect way to dress your denim up for the office, or give it a sophisticated spin appropriate for all ages. To find your best leg shape, take note of your body type. The hem of your jeans should create balance with your hips – and when you get it right, it can visually take off pounds. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different fits, styles and cuts to find the one that best flatters you. In fact, it may be advantageous to set aside a few hours or even a whole day when you go to try on jeans! Prior to trying, do your homework to get an idea of what you’re looking for. Sites like

Colorful Jeans Color abounds in denim this season and you’ll find every shade under the sun. Before you rush right out and add a bold pair to your wardrobe, though, there are a few points to consider. First, wherever you wear a bold color you will look bigger. Color makes a vast difference from the chic dark denim that is often minimizing. If you’re heavy through the hips, thighs and derriere, you may want to avoid colored denim altogether and go with the old standby. If it’s right for your body type, colored denim is trending this season and can spice up your wardrobe in a seemingly effortless way. With quirky, off-beat hues dominating, look for orange, bottle-green or canary to give your fall wardrobe a fresh spin. Less bright than

the hues of summer, fall shades are destroyed and faded, giving them a subtle yet oh so au courant appeal. Try Reuse jeans from Dress for skinnies and flares in the seasons best shades crafted from recycled denim. Chic colors and textures from David Kahn at Scout & Molly’s will give your look a boost. Or the ultra light weight, butter soft jeans from M2F at Lily Mae’s.

Heavy Metal If color isn’t your thing, perhaps you’ll like some of the latest metallic washes. Still primarily dark, metallic washes in gold, silver, copper and bronze give your everyday denim a shot of style. This effect can be worn well by women of all ages, but you’ll want to temper the distressing and tame the color to keep your look sophisticated. Try an animal or other print for a subtly chic effect.

“THE ART OF STYLE”

Overcoat Coated denim is another look that is all over for fall and takes it to a whole new level. A cross between denim and leather, the coated texture gives you the sexy, sleek look while looking great even when the weather is still warm. Coated denim comes in a wide range of colors and finishes and can easily be dressed up or down for a very versatile look.

Aventures des Toiles

Mix and Match We’re seeing denim in jackets and shirts this season, and even a few handbags. While it’s great to have options in how you style your look, be careful that you don’t get too matchymatchy. Wearing denim from head to toe can look dated, matronly, and just plain unattractive. Try mixing denim shirts and jackets with colored denim, metallics or a pair of print jeans for a cool effect. Pair coated denim pants with a classic denim jacket for a casual and chic look – or mix your coated denim with a denim shirt for fun. Mixing and matching in unexpected ways will help you take your denim to a whole new level.

Miss North Carolina, Arlie Honeycutt, knows a thing or two about style. After all, the Garner native has been in the spotlight, presenting herself at her best since the age of fourteen when she was bitten by the pageant bug.

Honeycutt couldn’t have been more of a delight. She is kind and gentle with a big heart. To help her uncover her true style, I asked her to take my StyleFinder™ assessment. StyleFinder™ is a proprietary system that I use with my clients to help them pinpoint exactly what their style is. My philosophy is that it is not just the clothes you wear, it’s dressing authentically for who you are from the inside out. Connecting with what your style truly is and finding ways to express that through your clothing can be a powerful force in feeling confident and empowered. I wanted to help Honeycutt know what to look for in her clothes so that she stays true to her style. After all, it can sometimes be tricky to have clarity on what your own style is with so many opportunities to experiment with and choose from.

Honeycutt’s StyleFinder™ iD is Delicate/Classic and Sporty, and in working with her I found that this is spot on in helping her express exactly who she is. Delicate means that what’s most important to her is a look that is feminine, yet not overdone. This is certainly a look that flatters Honeycutt’s soft coloring and gentle nature. Tempered with Classic, a timeless style that transcends the trends, Honeycutt looks amazing in whatever she puts on. Classic styles are her go-to without getting too caught up in the trends. Sporty is her supporting word and shows that what is fundamental to her style is comfort. While comfort is of utmost importance, she must not sacrifice her style or she will be left feeling disconnected from herself. Put these words together and you have a recipe for style that creates a look just perfect for a pageant queen.

Outfit #2: Jeans are the staple for all college girls and Honeycutt is no exception. Sporting a fabulous pair of dark-wash skinnies from Miss Me, she amps them up with a beautiful tunic in one of the season’s hottest shades (and her best version of it) – red. While she may be classic, one of the best ways to bring your look current is to wear one of the season’s hottest colors. A pendant and a chic bag with classic styling take this look to a new level. All Items from Gigi’s Boutique.

WHY I LOVE THIS OUTFIT...

discover yourself through effortless fashion

There was something both so feminine and nostalgic about this dress. It was the first piece I selected whilst browsing Adore Boutique. I thought it the counterpart to the poodle skirt of the 1950's. I couldn't wait to try it on. Once I pulled it on, I felt transported to another time, another realm. One of the many reasons why I am so passionate about fashion, the experimental element can be quite magical. It's always uplifting to feel good in what you are wearing, too.

Once my hair was done (thank you Mark of MARK CHRISTOPHER SALON!) I couldn't wait to don this long, lace number. I knew it would bring out the up 'do that much more. I yearned to go to a party or a wedding in this beautiful dress. I only wish I could have a hair stylist follow me around for such special events. They always say every outfit looks better when you're hair is styled so impeccably. I couldn't agree more. This dress is so flirty and fun. The best part is how lightweight it is, like walking on frothy clouds. A great dancing dress. Twirling around in it felt surreal. Since the hairstyle and dress were the main focuses of this particular look, I wanted to keep my accessories very simple. However, I thought the statement necklace married well to the soft, light lace details. The satin silk tie closure worked well with the back of the dress and its design too. Win, win!

The phenomenon of the high-low trend started on the fashion runway, and has quickly trickled down to almost every designer. I'm glad, as it's a very fun and flattering style to work with. I'm also a huge fan of collared shirts and blouses. The fact that this dress comes with one is great. A very classic style and fit for almost everyone. And the sleeveless cut is also comfortable. My Audrey Hepburn inspired up 'do really helped to focus attention to the neckline of the dress. I wish I could style my hair this way every day. Now, if only I also had access to Audrey Hepburn's Givenchy wardrobe as well. A girl can dream...

WHY I LOVE THIS OUTFIT... Very 70's- the print and the color of this dress. I had to play with it of course. I think Jackie or Donna from That 70's Show would have jumped at the chance to wear it too. Since I have very dark brown hair, autumnal colors seem to complement me well. Orange being one of my favorite hues. The flower cut outs in the design are incredibly adorable and eye-engaging. I wanted to keep the rest of the look subtle. Only adding in small touches of chocolate brown.

Known for her chic and cutting edge style, Jenny McCarthy is not just a pretty face. She's a little bit of crazy and a whole lot of gorgeous. With a huge heart and an even bigger sense of humor, McCarthy has made herself appealing to men and women alike. Then toss in a unique mixture of “anything goes” and a strong belief that no one should take themselves too seriously. On the heels of the season two finale of her hit reality show Love in the Wild, McCarthy has a new book coming out (likely another best seller) as well as fulfilling her duties as mom, producer and actress. Before embarking on a new television season, McCarthy found time to talk with Triangle Style about what love is REALLY like in the wild.

It seems like you have a really busy life! How you did you find time to be a mom, producer, host, writer, etc? Well, we were taping Love in the Wild for about four weeks. We shot pretty much every day we were there. I was staying in a place that was secure and nice because I had my son with me the entire time. I like to drag him everywhere I go; as a single mom, I kind of need to. And it was one of the most incredible experiences of our lives. Evan, my son, fell in love with the island. I fell in love with the culture and I had a ball while working with these little youngsters!

Some people really found love on the show. Were you able to find a special someone as well?

You know my sister and I (she was on the job with me) put bets as to who we thought was going to make it to the end. We both lost, by the way. We were really surprised that some who started off really sweet turned out to be the biggest brats, and the ones that started off like brats turned out to be great people. They were just being kind of their offensive selves in the beginning. So you got to see it all. And I couldn't be happier with the outcome. On a producing level, I was literally saying prayers for no rain and for certain couples to really fall in love – and it worked!

When working every single day, it's not like I can drag a teleprompter into the jungle. I had intricate dialog that was sometimes four pages typed out – full pages – about maps and where they need to lead, and what they need to do specifically. I couldn't mess up one word. So I was very, very busy memorizing four hours a night and then working sometimes 14-hour days. There really was not time for me to kind of check out the candy at the candy store, if you will. I really concentrated on making my part the best it could be. Then I made out with somebody at the wrap party. Okay.

What was the most shocking thing that happened during the shoot? There were a few things. One was that these kids were doing such dangerous adventures; I couldn't believe what we were asking them to do. I mean, huge athletes couldn't have done half of the stuff we made these kids do and I was the one that wound up on crutches. I pulled my hamstring while I was sleeping (so I felt like a real wuss), and for two episodes I had to be carried around on crutches.

Why do you think danger and adventure are so arousing for many people, and are you one of those people?

Fall Fashion Has Arrived

Well, danger and drama is arousing. I mean, it's probably the same reason we like to ride roller coasters – you get a little bit of an adrenaline high from it and it takes care of the appetite of gossip and soap opera cravings for women.

How do you think that you would have done as a contestant on this show? Are you competitive at all when it comes to love and the dating game? That's a great question. I am an incredibly competitive athlete. My sisters and I all had scholarships to college. Unfortunately, I took cheerleading and there weren't many scholarships for that, but I was still really athletic. And watching the contestants compete in their adventures, I think I would have done great but it would have cost me finding me a guy because I probably would have punched him in the face for doing something wrong on the task.

Can you share any past dating tips or words of wisdom for our readers?

Sure. While on this wonderful journey of dating hell I've been on, I tell my girlfriends: on your first or first few dates, keep an eye on how your man treats the service industry – your waitress, your waiter, the valet person. You can kind of see someone bleed through, if you know what I mean, if they're snappy, rude, or not respectful to people that are trying to help you out. I take that as a big red flag and that person doesn't usually get a second date. That's a quick tip.

Do you prefer acting, hosting, writing. Is there one medium that you prefer and why? I kind of rotate, you know what I mean? Sometimes I like going on the treadmill, sometimes going to Boot Camp, sometimes yoga. But if I do too much of one thing, I get bored so I feel blessed and I tend to go with whatever I'm feeling at the time. All of a sudden, I'm ready to write another book. And I’m feeling like writing a book, but there are other times when I think, “Ew, I'd rather get a root canal than write right now.” Sometimes I can't wait to act and get lost in a role, and other times I think acting's so fake and I miss hosting. I tend to miss being a ringleader and guiding people through it. So I keep this weird rotation, and it's been helpful for me because I don't get bored.

You have another book coming out, can you tell us a little bit about that? Yes, this one's called Bad Habits: Confessions of a Recovering Catholic. It's basically my comingof-age story from the time I was six until now. It's all about the hilarious and sometimes horrific stories of being raised by nuns, sins that have gone on along the way, and questioning the rules. It's really insightful. I hate when people say this is my best one yet – but as a writer you do get better at expressing yourself and becoming more vulnerable and raw. So this one is my little baby because it's really coming of age! Look for McCarthy on the upcoming third season of NBC’s Love in the Wild; visit NBC.com for information about the show. TS

pucker up Change is in the air and fall colors have inspired the latest looks and hottest hues for lips this season. From lips that shine to pouts that pop, we've got the most chic shades and top trends for your lips! Colors that any skin tone can pull off – these are the top four favorites for fall. Perfect Plums Purple is popping up everywhere this season. But you don't have to go grape to make this dramatic look work. Sexy shine is the way to go with this sensual shade. It may be a little overwhelming, so start with a subtle plum. Ideal for pale skin, but avoid matte lipsticks in this shade. Along with this stick color, make sure you apply a pink toned blush on your cheeks – and don't try a smokey eye unless you want to look like a vamp-ire. TRY THIS: < Lipstick Queen Chinatown Pencil in Mystery, $20, available at Lipstick Queen > Givenchy Gloss

Hot Pink Hello hot stuff. Hot pink is so in for fall and winter. With many shades to choose from, it's important to find out if your skin color is warm or cool as this will help you select just the right color (see below). A smokey eye looks sensational with a hot pink lip, but take it easy on cheek color as you don't want to look like a clown. Keep it semi-glossy and sleek, topping off your lipstick with a little clear gloss. Avoid Barbie Pink as this is one of those chalky, kid colors that can get lips the wrong type of attention. TRY THIS: < Make Up For Ever Rouge Artist Intense in #36, $19, available at Sephora > Chanel Rouge Allure in Kensington, $32.50, available at Chanel

Really Red Red with orange tones is the season's top trend for lips. Don't be afraid of going really red! Just like the hot pinks, there are tons of red shades to from which to choose. So figure out if you are a warm or cool before you select your shade. Another day or nighter, this ravishing red comes with a definite attitude. From the runway to the mall, red is popping up on lips everywhere and nail polish to match is another mustdo. Great paired with dark liner and well defined lashes, keep cheeks to a minimum – think modern day Marilyn! TRY THIS: < Iris Apfel for MAC Lipstick in Scarlet Ibis, $14, available at MAC >Illamasqua Lipstick Flare, $22, available at Sephora

Neutral Nudes Okay, think coffee with creamer – warm and rich. Perfect for those cold, winter days. This beautiful, soft and clean look is sort of an updated nude that ladies are loving. Any skin tone can pull this color off and no matter what you are wearing, this shade is the perfect match! Another plus, the warm nude works for day or night styles. Believe it or not, it can be difficult to

select the perfect nude hue because of the undertones. Don't bother with glosses, just regular old lipstick in a tube will do for this modern twist on nude lip wear. A simple and clean look for the eye, with a little liner is best suited for nude lips. Avoid lip liner or over defined lips and keep moisturized for longer coverage. TRY THIS: Dr. Hauschka Skin Care Lip Liner in

Romantica Soft 3, $19.99, available at Beauty Bar.

Are you a warm or a cool? Here's a quick way to tell: grab something pink and something orange. Hold each color up to your face, one at a time. If your face glows when you are next to orange, then you are a “warm.” And if it glows when you hold up the pink, you are a “cool.” If you don't glow with either, you are a neutral and can wear warms and cools, so consider yourself lucky!

Maroon-Think that deep brownish red of the seventies. Chic and sexy, but not too dark! Finding just the right maroon is key and when you do, it'll work for the boardroom or the club. Bold and vibrant, and great in a gloss, this trendy tone is going to be seen on lips from NC to LA! Copper-Not too futuristic, but enough pizazz to draw attention to your pout! This copper fad is perfect for those who already love warm browns and nudes. The upcoming copper craze should brighten up your lips, without overpowering your face. Sheer Pink- Sure to be a fad fav, sheer pink looks great on every lip! Natural and fresh, sheer pink is THE upcoming lipstick look. Gorgeous in a gloss, sheer pink is easy and gives your overall appearance a “complete” feel. Looking like a million bucks, sheer pink should be in every purse! Peach-The new neutral, peach is a demure shade that wears best during the day. Soft and supple, lips will look super kissable, without the shocking orange that has been so popular. Adorable with dresses and skirts, peach is the girly girl color to try! TS

blushing beauty If you believe the commercials, there are a host of things in the world that should embarrass you: bad breath, body odor, varicose veins, love handles, wrinkles and panty lines. Purchase the product, take away the shame. However, sometimes there is nothing more embarrassing than a simple question…just ask any woman who has ever been heard, “Are you pregnant?” when she wasn’t.

“A couple of years ago I gained a little bit of weight,” says Tamara D. of Holly Springs. “Well, maybe it was a lot. I ran into a friend I hadn’t seen in a while and she said, ‘Oh, you’re pregnant—I am too!’ I was too stunned to say anything; I just changed the subject. To this day I’ll bet she thinks I had a baby about the time she did!” Embarrassment is a feeling of uncomfortable self-consciousness. It is the intersection between emotions like humiliation, shame and guilt; and fears like isolation and rejection. In Tamara’s case, she was humiliated that someone thought she was pregnant—and ashamed that she had let herself gain weight.

“How much do you weigh?” Some questions are embarrassing only in a certain context. A fellow weight-watching friend might be able to get by with asking how much you weigh. The same question from a boyfriend could signal the end of a relationship! "My husband learned long ago that there are some questions best left unanswered: 1) do these pants make my butt look big? 2) Do you think that woman is pretty? "

“What did you do to your hair?” A co-worker asked me this after a pretty significant change in my hairstyle. I loved it, and was actually looking forward to receiving compliments on it at work. She didn’t say that she hated my hair; however, it certainly did not sound like a compliment. So I told her the truth: “I got a haircut,” and did not stick around for any follow-up questions! “Are you pregnant?” There are a couple of reasons this is a dangerous question. Obviously many women would take such a question to mean they look pregnant when they are not. But the question can be hurtful to women who desperately want to be pregnant, but aren’t. Alice F. of Wake Forest says she and her husband tried for years to conceive a child—and each time someone asked her that question it was a painful reminder that she could not have the baby she longed for (I’m happy to say she eventually conceived and had a baby girl).

So how to handle those embarrassing questions? Laugh, lecture, or leave.

Laugh “Did you know you have toilet paper on your shoe?” There are some “oops” moments that can best be deflected by humor. Learning to laugh at yourself is one of the greatest skills an adult can master. Everyone, without exception, has experienced embarrassing moments in life: food stuck in your teeth, ill-timed digestive noises, tripping, falling, spitting in someone’s face while talking, showing more cleavage than you wanted, etc.

Lecture “What’s wrong with him?” To lecture simply means to teach. Some questions are asked out of a genuine concern or curiosity, however awkward they may seem. A friend of mine recalls how she used to feel provoked when people would stare or point at her son (who has cerebral palsy and is wheel-chair bound). “I used to think staring and pointing were rude,” she says. “But I realize now that people feel curious about someone like Randy.” In fact, she doesn’t mind questions now because they give her a chance to educate others. In the mall one day, a young girl about six asked: “What’s wrong with that boy in the wheelchair?” Her mother looked mortified, but my friend gracefully put her at ease and took the opportunity them both to Randy. She explained that he had weaker legs and arms than other children (and had to use the wheelchair). This made him different than many other children, not “wrong.”

Some questions don’t require any answer—you just need to leave the conversation. Questions like, “How much money do you make? or “Did you use fertility drugs? are off limits and rude. The only time it is proper to discuss your salary is with a potential employer. And you don’t owe anyone an explanation of your intimate life. Leave by changing the subject. Deflect such questions by asking questions of your own. To the question, “Why aren’t you married yet? you can say: “You must be very happily married; tell me your secret. If someone asks how much money you make, a great response would be, “enough to be thankful for what I have. If all else fails, anytime you are asked an embarrassing question you can always use the old standby: “It’s none of your business. TS

It is important to not only treat the neck area with a specialized serum for the neck's targeted area, but to keep the area moisturized. Ombré offers a wonderful color technique for individuals who desire a softer, low maintenance color. The best part about ombré is that is works on all complexions. Women with light skin tones have more room to play with, as you can go for a more copper color. For medium skin tones, we recommend a more neutral to ash ombré, giving contrast to your ends and making your eyes pop. Darker skin should choose cooler ombré as well. Be sure to ask about the right products to use in order to keep your color looking great. We recommend the Color Save Shampoo and Conditioner by Arrojo. JOINT VENTURE JEWELRY AND PEACHY KEEN BOUTIQUE ••• Karly, Lee, Donna and Jen Hankin •••

Joint Venture Jewelry celebrated its 14th anniversary in August. How would you describe your store to a new customer? Joint Venture Jewelry is a fine estate jewelry store. We specialize in one-of-a-kind jewels – some old, some new – treasures you just won’t find elsewhere. What’s more is everything in our store is on consignment and offers a 30-50 percent discount from traditional retail pricing. This allows everyone the opportunity to acquire treasures without feeling guilty about the expense. Shopping, and even consigning with us, helps recycle those heirlooms you no longer wear at the highest possible return.

What’s your favorite part of the business? We are a local, family mom and pop shop. We even bring our little dogs to work. And we strive to treat everyone who walks in the door like they are part of the family. It’s really about the experience: helping celebrate, and even lend a shoulder when needed, during those special life events that matter more to us than the glitz and glam. But a little bling never hurt anyone, right? 56 | triangle style

What is unique about being an estate and vintage jeweler? We value the richness of history, the charm of old world design, and take special pride in being a part of the “go green” movement. Each gem we add to our showcase is one less that has to be mined. Truly a beautiful way to save the environment! Plus jewelry is timeless; it can be repaired, polished and renewed.

What’s this about vintage to vogue? Many of our clients look for something different to match their unique personality. Vintage is just that. It dates back to the days of prohibition, the roaring ‘20s and even the rockin’ ‘70s. Mixing vintage elements of jewelry and style with today’s vogue fashion has really become popular. That’s why as we celebrate 14 years in business, we are expanding from our vintage roots to vogue fashion in opening a new shop. Peachy Keen is a contemporary lifestyle boutique specializing in designer apparel, footwear, accessories and gifts. We now have the unique opportunity to pair the “old world” charm of Joint Venture Jewelry with the emerging styles of today at Peachy Keen.

At Peachy Keen, we believe in value – that’s quality garments and fashion-forward styles that won’t break the bank. Our selections include several contemporary designer brands that you love and some you’ve probably never heard of. Peachy Keen women are unique, therefore our collections can’t be found at the mall or surrounding boutiques. Shop with us: young and old, trendy and conservative, preppy and funky.

Where to Shop: Beleza, A Fair Trade Boutique Who They Support: The business plan for this fair trade shop is based on helping others, but they also actively support several non-profit organizations. Shop owner, Philip Dail, formed Together We Can (TWC) to work with local ministries, as well as those in Haiti and Guatemala. TWC’s tremendous efforts providing goods and supplies were especially appreciated in the aftermath of the Haitian earthquake and right here in Raleigh after the recent tornado. Beleza has raised funds for Stop Hunger Now, Catholic Outreach Ministries, and Raleigh Woman's Club. They have also sold goods for Tiny Hands, a global organization that works to prevent sex-trafficking, and helps the women who have been effected by that travesty and sells jewelry made of Kazuri beads from Kenya. The money for these beads goes to an orphanage for children who are HIV positive. Beleza’s local outreach program also includes collecting yarn for use in a women’s prison crocheting and knitting project, organized by Our Children’s Place (OCP) a private nonprofit agency committed well-being of children with incarcerated parents.

Owner, Ruth Dowdy, explains, “Every woman knows a successful outfit only looks as good as the foundation they wear underneath.” As a certified mastectomy fitter, she works intimately with breast cancer patients to help rebuild their confidence from the inside out! However, she has seen first hand how the high cost of prosthesis can make the healing process even more difficult. In response, Dowdy collects and cleans gently used bras and breast prosthesis and offers them to clients who would otherwise not be able to afford them. She finds the generous act of donating these personal items comforting for the families that do so, as well. In addition to serving the women who come into her shop, Dowdy supports Dress For Success. She provides clean and gently used bras to this organization, which helps low-income women acquire a work-appropriate wardrobe as they prepare to re-enter the work force. Bra Patch also supports Pretty in Pink, an organization which helps women who have had a mastectomy but do not have money or insurance, to pay for their expensive bras and breast prosthetics.

Where to Shop: Palm Avenue Who They Support: Rebecca Byrd, of Palm Avenue, has very close ties with the Amani Children’s Foundation. The Winston-Salem based foundation works to protect Kenya’s most vulnerable young children, particularly abandoned infants and HIV-positive babies across the country. In fact, the organization helps to fund the Kenyan orphanage where Byrd adopted her two youngest children. One way Palm Avenue honors it’s commitment to helping these needy children is by selling Kenyan items in the shop. Byrd has also worked with Lilly Pulitzer to design an exclusive Murfee scarf, with a beautiful bright Africa-inspired print. A portion of each sale of these scarves goes directly to the Amani Children’s Foundation.

What You Can Do: Visit www.AmaniChildren.org to learn more about organization and make a donation. You can also stop by the Cameron Village shop and support the cause by picking up a fabulous Murfee scarf, or two, of your own.

Horwitz started M:TA after she, herself, was diagnosed with breast cancer seven years ago. Unable to find any accurate information about what to expect during and after reconstructive surgery, Horwitz decided to document her own journey with a photo-filled book which has been shared with doctors and patients around the world. The book has been such a success, and inspiration, that a second book has just been released to illustrate innovations in the reconstruction process.

Where To Shop: Swagger Who They Support: For years Mandy Becker has enjoyed “paying it forward” with the Caring Community Foundation’s annual Pay It Forward event. The organization raises money so that they can provide financial support to all types of cancer patients in need, by offering monetary assistance for rent, utilities, treatment or other expenses that become difficult to manage during cancer treatment. The local charity was started in 2001 by grateful cancer survivor, Jill Wolford, who wanted to somehow find a way to repay her community for all the kindness and generosity that they had bestowed on her when she was diagnosed. In recognition of the financial assistance, in-kind donations and hands-on involvement Becker has committed to CCF, last year she was honored with the organization's "Doris Pfeffer Distinguished Service award". In addition to the Caring Community Foundation, this November, Swagger will be hosting an open house in support of Backpack Buddies. This program, run by the Interfaith Food Shuttle, helps to provide six healthy weekend meals for school children who might otherwise have to do without.

the experts speak Answered by Dr. Bartels

When reading the nutritional labels on food, what kind of things should we be aware of? Most of us do not grow our own food and prepare it from scratch. As more people are eating processed and prepared foods, there is an increased danger that even if we try to make healthy choices, they may be the wrong ones. Nutrition labeling has been required in this country since 1994. Government nutrition labeling is in some ways helpful, but can be very misleading. A major source of inaccuracy and even deliberate deception is the rounding error. This means that if less than a threshold amount of a substance is found in a given food, the manufacturer is allowed to report that there is none. For example, many foods which contain salt are allowed to call their product “sodium free” because the amount of sodium contained is considered negligible. The manufacturer may make the serving size artificially low in order for it to fall below the threshold amount of a substance they wish to downplay. Then they can label the package as containing “none.” What is the difference between low fat or low calorie food choices and which is the better choice? With regard to reducing and main-

You may be surprised at the best way to read and understand product labels in this instance. For a low carbs, the “light” or “low calorie” salad dressings are usually not a good choice. Regular salad dressings are usually lower in sugar and carbohydrates and a better choice for individuals watching their weight. “Low fat” cheese products are usually higher in carbohydrates, so those on a low carb diet would be better advised to eat real cheese. And many “low fat” or “low calorie” versions of baked goods are actually higher in carbohydrates. As all foods are composed primarily of fat, protein, and carbohydrates, when fat is removed it must be replaced with something – and carbohydrates are the usual choice. When eating fast food, what's the healthiest choice? When going the fast food route, many people feel as if they are making the healthy choice in selecting a chicken or fish sandwich over a hamburger. However, most fast food chicken and fish are breaded and fried – making them higher in fat, carbohydrates and calories than the hamburger they replace.

the experts speak Answered By Amber Self, BLOOM SKIN SPA

What is Ultherapy? Ultherapy is a new non-surgical face, neck and brow lifting treatment that uses triedand-true ultrasound technology to actually lift and tone loose or sagging skin from deep within your facial tissues.

How does it work? Ultherapy has received FDA clearance for use in this new type of medical procedure and is the only non-invasive treatment that can specifically target the deep foundation below the skin that is typically addressed in cosmetic surgery without cutting or disrupting the surface of the skin. It is also the only procedure to use ultrasound imaging, which allows us to actually see the layers of tissue we target during treatment and ensure the energy is delivered precisely to where it will be most effective. When this energy is delivered it initiates the repair process and your skin responds to this precise energy by stimulating new collagen growth. As the collagen reorganizes and strengthens the facial tissues the result is a lifting, toning and tightening effect.

Does it hurt? There can be some discomfort while the energy is being delivered, but it is temporary, and a signal that the collagen-building process has been initiated. Comfort thresholds vary from patient to patient, and we will discuss pain management options for making the experience as pleasant as possible. Patients typically leave comfortable and excited about the benefits to come.

66 | triangle style

How many treatments does it take? The majority of patients only need one treatment; however, some may benefit from more than one treatment (depending on how much laxity they have and their body’s own biological response to the ultrasound and collagen rebuilding process).

Is there any maintenance required? No. However, touch-up treatments every year or two can prolong the effects and help slow down the rate of skin aging.

Is there any downtime? With Ultherapy, there is little to no downtime. There may be slight redness for up to an hour or so following the treatment, and a small percentage of patients may have slight swelling, tingling or tenderness to touch, but these are mild and temporary in nature. For the most part you are able to return to your normal activities right away. There is always the possibility for other less common post-procedural effects, which will be addressed in the consultation.

aging gracefully Written by Lou Scott

I had always thought my 50th birthday would be special, that I would walk into a room and everyone would shout, “Surprise!” But that’s not what happened. My husband was working, my daughters were a two-day drive away and I was settling into a new town where I didn’t yet know anyone. I felt terribly, terribly alone. So I sat down at my computer and congratulated myself for all the wonderful things I had done for others, for all the things I had once wanted to do and had given up along the way. Boy was I angry. So I tore off a piece of notebook paper and wrote down 50 things I wanted to do for myself during the rest of my life, and put down whatever came to my mind just to fill up space. After I finished, I folded up the piece of paper and put it in my wallet.

Aging Gracefully Fall12:healthy habits-winter

I met most of my goals. I finished my degree, learned Russian, brushed up on my French and signed up for a class in Chinese. I joined a book group, a gardening club, was more active in my church, took up Pilates and swimming. I changed my hairstyle, lost ten pounds, wore more fashionable clothes and went with good friends on a walking trip through Provence. On my seventieth birthday, my children gave me a wonderful party. To keep on doing what I have been doing is now my goal. Maintenance, I think it is called. First, I don’t want to have any accidents I can prevent. Hand rails on both sides of the cellar stairs, nonslip treads on those outside, grab bars and a single faucet in the shower have been installed. Because tripping over an area rug is a hazard, I’ve had my hardwood floors exposed and sanded instead. And if I ever should have arthritis, the Tempur-Pedic mattress on my bed should help. Next, I want to see my grandchildren grow up. To do that I have had to give up the idea of living in the suburbs full time. So I have found a pretty efficiency in Chicago within walking distance of almost everything, including my eldest daughter. Yet I won’t be underfoot. The condo has everything I need: an elevator, convenience store, even a doorman who turns on the taxi light whenever a ride is needed. Grocery stores will deliver. And there’s a nice view of the park, even a glimpse of the lake from my kitchen window. How could I feel confined when I can see everything going on? Appliances are within easy reach. Add a pretty recliner, enablers for my bed, a slide-in bathtub and I’m all set to go. The Art Institute, long walks, and trips to Italy, China’s Great Wall and New Zealand are all on my list. The rest of my family are just a nonstop flight away. My father and great-grandfather lived well past ninety. They may have slowed down, but they kept on going. Baring illness, I plan to do exactly the same.

• Take the sting out of a burn and help it heal faster with a quick coat of honey. Works great on sunburn, too. For even faster relief, rinse the burn with a little soy sauce and then lightly layer on some honey. Keep it covered and in a few hours you’ll smell like Chinese takeout – and you’ll be good to go! • Let’s cut to the point here: you can sharpen your scissors and shears by simply slicing through a folded sheet of aluminum foil a few times. But, don’t stop there, ball up that foil and use it as sturdy but gentle disposable scrubber for stubborn sticky stuff on your glass baking pans. • Looking to shed some light on how to fix a sticky zipper? Simply run a candle up and down the sides to lubricate and it will be fixed in a zip!

hairspray! Saturate the stain with an alcohol based spray, then dab with a clean towel until the icky blot has been banished. • Rolling stones may not gather much moss, but your walkways and driveways do! Spray them down with a touch of diluted bleach to keep the mess at bay. • Place a penny in the bottom of a vase to help keep your flowers standing tall. Throw in a sugar cube and they’ll last even longer. Sweet! • Spritz on some window cleaner when you need to wiggle out of a too-tight sparkler stuck on your ring finger. • Custom fit your favorite bra’s straps under your racer back or strappy shirts with a little dental floss.

• Don’t pull out your hair when you get ink on your favorite shirt – pull out some

It turns out, you have better things to do with your time.

• You may not want to rub salt in your wounds, but you should try some on your next oil or butter stain! Don’t pass the salt until you’ve sprinkled some on the greasy spot – and the sooner the better. Works wonders on wine stains, too! • Keep your copper pots clean and shiny with lemons and kosher salt. Cut the lemons in half, dredge them in the salt and then simply scrub away. Wipe down copper and brass with a little ketchup for a rosy shine. • Do your half-squeezed toothpaste and cosmetic tubes have you in a bind? Clamp the ends with a binder clips to make sure that you can use every last drop. • Toss a denture cleaning tablet in the bowl and you’ll have a self-cleaning toilet worth smiling about. Add tablets to a cup of hot water to polish up your jewelry and gemstones too. • Ever write on a wipe-off board with the wrong kind of marker? Yea, I thought so! Well, wipe that slate clean with a swipe of hand sanitizer and a paper towel. • If mosquitoes really bug you, try sticking some dryer sheets in your pocket on your next trip out and they’ll fly right by. • You may get more flies with honey, but when you want to get rid of ants, reach for the vinegar. Wipe down the surfaces with vinegar and spray the affected areas with a 50% dilution of vinegar and water to keep the ants from marching in.

• Don’t let a broken fingernail drive you nuts! Patch it up with a tiny strip of tissue and a drop or two of instant Krazy Glue. • Love fluffy towels? Toss in a tennis ball or two in your dryer. Advantage: YOU! • You’ll go gaga for clean windows and mirrors when you mix one teaspoon of baby shampoo with one gallon of water. Wipe them down with newspaper for a fabulous streak free finish. • Make a delicious batch of “tipsy chocolate chipsy cookies” by substituting bourbon for vanilla. Don’t worry, the alcohol actually burns off, but the richer bourbon flavor remains. • Pop a piece of mint gum in your mouth when chopping onions and you won’t shed a tear. • Keep a little vinegar in your pool bag to keep jellyfish from souring your next vacation! Pour it on immediately after getting stung to neutralize the stinging.

• Here’s an idea that doesn’t suck: keep your delicate chains and jewelry from getting tangled by slipping them into drinking straws. Cut the straws in half and make a little notch on each end to secure. • Too much salt? Add a few raw potato slices to your overly salted soups or stews, and soon no one will ever be the wiser! • Keep your baked goods longer by adding a slice of bread to their storage container. Don’t forget to stick a slice in your next shipment of holiday cookies to keep them moist and oven fresh during shipping! • You’ll have sweet dreams when you slip dryer sheets into your pillow cases. This is a great way to keep your guest rooms smelling fresh too.

EVERYDAY ELEGANCE

Great food for entertaining that's simple enough for everyday Recipes by Nancy Aiken everydayelegancefood@gmail.com Find this and more recipes at my new blog:

Thewayweeattoday.blogspot.com

The Gobbler Pizza

That’s what makes the Gobbler Pizza so delicious. Every bite combines all your favorite flavors.

Let’s face it, what to do with all that leftover turkey has been the focus ever since Lucy pulled the football from Charlie Brown’s oncoming foot. And the recipes almost always focus on the turkey; turkey soup, turkey quesadillas, and I’ve even seen a recipe for turkey risotto.

Start with your favorite pizza crust. I buy freshly made dough from my local pizzeria and stretch it out on a baking sheet. Next, spoon leftover gravy all over the crust, like you would pizza sauce, and then top with your favorite Thanksgiving leftovers; turkey, dollops of stuffing and mashed potatoes, even sweet potatoes. Bake at 350° until the crust is crisp.

But everyone knows the real joy of Thanksgiving dinner is that perfect bite; a bit of turkey pushed onto a fork with a dollop of stuffing, swiped through mashed potatoes and lightly dipped in a puddle of gravy.

If you want chucks of cranberry sauce, and who doesn’t, add that at the end. — Enjoy!

Fall for Fall

in the High Country Fall tints trees all across North Carolina, but autumn’s allure is most colorful where suddenly chilly temperatures turn northern tree species to brilliant reds and yellows. People rightly associate that scenario with New England’s northern climate, where maples, birches, beeches, and other species flame in postcard colors.

Postcard Perfect Color One glance at the fall photos in those postcard photos of the Blue Ridge Parkway’s famous Linn Cove Viaduct on Grandfather Mountain makes it obvious—High Country color rivals autumn anywhere in the world. This fall is a great time see for yourself. The viaduct and the “missing link” part of the Parkway around Grandfather Mountain opened exactly 25 years ago this autumn (September 11, 1987). The famous scenic road that started in the NC High Country (near Cumberland Knob) in 1935, was also completed in the High Country after 52 years under construction. For many motorists, this key portion of the Parkway is the highpoint of “America’s most scenic road.”

On Grandfather Mountain those views include the viaduct. One wheelchair accessible trail from the Linn Cove Visitor Center wanders right beneath it. Another easy hike to a stunning view on Rough Ridge shows the viaduct clinging to the mountainside. Far above the Viaduct, the South’s most rugged trails climb ladders up cliffs and summits in Grandfather Mountain State Park. Beside the state park, the Mile-High Swinging Bridge leads the less adventurous (and even the wheelchairbound) to eye-popping views. The drive to the bridge includes a highly-regarded nature museum and wildlife viewing habitats. Cyclists have spectacular routes to autumn adventure, one reason the High Country was just named one of the nation’s “ultimate Ride hotspots” by a national cycling publication. A tour on almost any quiet country road will demonstrate why, after battling cancer, Lance Amstrong’s was inspired by training in the High Country to tackle the Tour de France. Boone’s brand-new Rocky Knob mountain bike park is an attraction. So is the Boone Greenway.

A Region of Autumn Options The Parkway—the most popular unit of the entire National Park System—is one road among many for exploring autumn color in the High Country. And scenic driving is just one way to do it. Many Parkway overlooks have easy, so-called “leg-stretcher trails” that lead to cascading waterfalls and inspiring viewpoints that will stretch your definition of scenic.

76 | triangle style

Skiing won’t be on the agenda till Thanksgiving, but scenic fall chairlift rides on Sugar Mountain whisk you a mile high for great biking and some of the area’s best autumn views. Hook your mountain bike to the attachments on the chair, and it’s all downhill, for adventurous riders on expansive grassy ski slope trails, or gradual, exhilarating and easy road rides in the Village of Sugar Mountain.

Autumn’s cool temps invite all kinds exercise, and that includes golf and tennis at their most scenic and invigorating. Tennis courts dot the Village of Sugar Mountain, and Sugar’s 18-hole golf course twists and turns through colorful forests with outstanding views of towering nearby peaks, among them Grandfather Mountain. After you’ve played a few rounds, hiked a few trails—or just spent a breezy afternoon gazing at the view from a mountain cabin or condo—there’s pampering available. High Country spas have attracted raves from national travel magazines. That’s just the start of the area’s sophisticated experiences. With three wineries, the High Country’s new wine trail permits inspired sip-

ping. Your circular scenic route can start right at the entrance to the Village of Sugar Mountain and include winery tours and tastings in Foscoe, Valle Crucis, and Banner Elk. And with art galleries, antique shops, artist’s studios, boutiques and specialty shops all along that same route, it’s easy to make culture the focus of fall travel. Long-known for the traditional music of local legend Doc Watson and others, the High Country is increasingly a place where an appreciation, and an experience, of mountain history anchors an enviable modern lifestyle in one of the country’s most attractive mountain resort areas. Randy Johnson is the author of the nationally bestselling trail guides Hiking the Blue Ridge Parkway and Hiking North Carolina. He’s written about the High Country, international travel, and skiing for national newspapers and magazines.

ask anna Hi Anna, I am always curious what products the pros use for their own everyday look.... That being said, what's in your makeup bag? Thanks! —Jenna I love makeup and there are so many great brands out there. I primarily wear (carry in my makeup bag) Jane Iredale Mineral Cosmetics. Since I am a skin specialist in addition to a makeup artist, I am pretty picky about what I put on my own skin. I will only wear makeup that isn’t going to be harmful to my skin. I love Jane Iredale Mineral Cosmetics because it actually helps the skin while still allowing you to achieve a flawless “makeup” look. I appreciate the fact that when I am wearing mineral makeup I get the added benefits of sun and environmental protection. Pure Mineral makeup, such as Jane’s, is also great for those concerned with breaking out; the minerals are inert and do not hold bacteria the way other makeup tends to. Buyers beware: there are cosmetic lines out that which claim to be mineral based but they are not pure minerals.

Jet Black Mascara • Bronzer • Breath Mints • Tocca Solid Perfume in Bridget (a girl has to smell good too) Of course at home I have lots of other goodies to choose from--like all different eye shadows and blushes. Not to mention I own a great set of makeup brushes. Every woman should own proper makeup brushes.

So here’s exactly what you will find in my makeup bag: Lip Gloss…all different colors • A neutral lip liner • Eye Brow Powder • Eye Brow Brush • Pressed Mineral Powder Compact • Kabuki Powder Brush •

Anna Porrazzo owns Synergy Spa in Raleigh and teaches corrective makeup and innovative skin care to dermatologists, plastic surgeons, estheticians and spa owners worldwide. Email your questions to askanna@trianglestyle.com

The right tools make the process of applying makeup much easier, in addition to creating a better-looking overall application. While a set of brushes can be a little costly, if you take care of them, they should literally last you a lifetime. Clean them regularly with a professional brush cleaner and then once a month or so wash them with a mild anti-bacterial soap and allow them to air-dry over night. Hope this helps you decide what items you would like to own! Best- Anna

Beasts of the Southern Wild On the Bathtub, an impoverished island cut off from the coast of New Orleans, is a spunky and fearless six-year old girl named Hushpuppy. To her the Bathtub is the best, the most wonderful place in all the world to live, for it has lots and lots of celebrations; there’s even one for how long it takes a baby to crawl to a finish line five feet away. As most of the island’s residents, Wink, her father, likes the Bathtub’s primitive way of life. In spite of drinking, scavenging, doing whatever whenever he pleases, he teaches Hushpuppy what he thinks she needs to know -- to catch fish with her bare hands, to keep their truck/boat afloat and to protect herself from the island’s next horrendous storm. Hushpuppy isn’t at all afraid. After all who else can stop ancient aurochs in their tracks? Besides, she says, even if the Bathtub doesn’t survive, a thousand years from now scientists will discover it and know that a girl named Hushpuppy once lived there.

his mother who wants him back now that her German boyfriend is no longer in the picture. The film’s photography, set against Sweden’s roughhewn countryside on a hill overlooking the sea, has an almost gothic quality to it.

Manhattan is a light-hearted romantic comedy and one of Woody Allen’s best-regarded films. As always, his storyline is delightfully hard to define. But I’ll try. Woody’s ex-wife, Meryl Streep, writes a tell-all memoir about their divorce (he tried to run her over with his car). His best friend has an affair with a zany intellectual, Diane Keaton. Woody casually dates a high school senior, Mariel Hemingway. Then he drops her and falls in love with his best friend’s mistress. The high school senior goes to England. His best friend’s mistress goes back to her lover. However it is the city itself, as in Woody Allen’s recent films -about London, Paris, and Rome -- who has the top billing.

Born to Be Wild Mother of Mine is a slow moving but poignant true story of Eero, one of the 70,000 children from Finland who were evacuated to neutral Sweden during WWII. Like many, Eero has a hard time adjusting. First, he doesn’t understand Swedish. Second, he resents being sent to Sweden in the first place -- whereas Signe, his foster mother, resents not being sent a girl. She insists he go elsewhere, even to an orphanage if need be. But when she learns Eero’s mother is moving to Berlin with her German boyfriend, Signe tells her husband she does not want to send Eero away after all. And when the war is over, she doesn’t want to return him to

is a documentary about two women, one in Kenya and the other in Borneo, who have spent their lives taking care of orphaned elephants and orangutans. However, their ultimate goal is to return them to the wild where they belong. Along the way there are some very sweet moments: baby elephants drink from milk bottles and play “soccer” together. Orangutans vigorously shampoo themselves and go zipping along on a motorcycle, holding on for dear life to the man driving. Filmed in crystal clear Imax, it makes for great family viewing.
