WHERE SUMMER BEGINS AT THE TRENTON SUMMER FESTIVAL

T

his year the Trenton Summer Festival will be providing multiple opportunities for Trenton festival-goers to get healthy. Featured at the intersection of West Road and Third Street will be The Trenton Summer Festival “Trail Town Training 101” event, which is designed to showcase the amazing trail system and opportunities that already exist and will be

expanding in the region. Festival and Trenton Parks and Recreation representatives expect this to provide a fantastic opportunity for building public awareness of the emerging trail systems, both locally and statewide, and Trenton’s bid for becoming a trail town. The Trail Town Training 101 event, sponsored by General R.V., Outdoor Adventures & Al Petri & Sons is scheduled to take place on West Road during the Festival from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. each day (June 2325). The goals of this new event include providing opportunity for festival visitors to explore the links between Downriver’s trail system, its waterways and its outdoor recreation opportunities, bringing important recognition to the regional and statewide efforts and providing opportunity for visitors to

discover the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge and visitor’s center. The event also will provide the opportunity for agencies to “talk trails” with festival visitors from around the region and educate them on the many benefits of trails, showcase private business partners, their products and services related to trails and outdoor recreation and sell the economic impact of trails on the community. The event will also educate the public on “rules of the road” through an interactive bicycle safety course and entertain visitors with professional stunt bicyclist performances throughout the weekend. The FREE entertainment lineup, compliments of Xfinity, will include the featured headliner on Friday, Mega 80s, with special guest Bugs Bedow. Saturday night features Killer Flamingo’s with special guest Spectrum project. The Thursday night Festival preview will again include elements from the Healthy Trenton initiative. “The Nibble a Little, Stroll and Roll” will offer a special price to get a bite at Trenton restaurants while strolling or rolling for a healthy taste of festival from 6-8 p.m. Beverages can be purchased if desired. Participating restaurants include Savannah’s, Round House BBQ, Ramsey’s Coney

Island, Truago, Elizabeth Park, Custard Corner, Promenade and Dels . Participants will enjoy strolling music, the hustle and bustle of festival set up, as well as drawings and prizes. Passes for this event are available at the Parks and Recreation Department for $20 each. The annual Mayor’s Breakfast will again kickoff Festival Friday morning at 8 a.m. at TV’s Grand Event before the official opening of the festival. Tickets will be available at City Hall. The All Point Construction Coed Volleyball tournament will take place at Elizabeth Park on Sunday morning. Teams can register at the Parks and Recreation Department. Other festival favorites include the meet up opportunities at the Festival Beer Garden. This year the Garden proceeds will benefit the Trenton Hockey Association. The festival will provide shuttle service compliments of Bud Lite and they will take

care of maneuvering the West Road construction each day from 10 a.m.12:30 a.m. Friday and Saturday and 10 a.m.-7 p.m. on Sunday. Bingo will be back, but located at St. Joseph Church, 2565 3rd St. this year, as will the popular cornhole tournaments on Saturday and Sunday and a special “Who’s Who” dunk tank for the police charities, located at West and West Jefferson all weekend.

Make sure to also take advantage of special pricing on kayak rentals. Riverside Kayak will be Continued on page 15

Bringing any container of alcoholic beverages into the special events area is also prohibited. The ordinance further restricts animals, bicycles, skateboards, roller skates, roller blades, or other similar devices, except those needed to assist persons with disabilities. BICYCLE SHOW OFFERS PROMISING NEW ENTERTAINMENT

T

hough the Trenton Summer Festival has been a Downriver mainstay for decades, organizers of the event are continually developing new ideas to make the event feel fresh and exciting. With one of the additions this year, the Chris Clark Bicycle Stunt Show, there will be no shortage of excitement coming from West Jefferson Avenue. From June 23-25, Clark will be bringing his act that has been seen all across the globe to Trenton and he hopes to provide the same energy that he has to thousands of festivals and parades before. Not only has Clark been all around the world with his show, but he’s also represented the United States in competitive events. “I was a member of the United States team at the World Championships in Spain and that was really cool as a competitor,” Clark said. “Performing in Times Square in New York during their Christmas parade was also an honor.” With the background and experience that he has developed while performing professionally over the past two decades, Clark condenses his shows into 20-30 minutes to showcase different tricks and talented feats. “There is an educational element to the show in that it motivates people to do something that they love to do and to be as good at that as possible.” Clark said. “It’s about learning and developing the skills you need to excel in what it is that you love. The most successful people are those who learn the skills and techniques required. “While there is an educational component, it is mostly about the riding and the tricks itself. I start off with the basics in the show and then move on to more skillful things. I pull people out of the audience and get

them involved and there are also giveaways, so it’s a really exciting event.” The show itself will see Clark maneuvering his body and his bike around and over various ramps and obstacles, but one of the parts that he enjoys most is the ability to give back to those that are in attendance. “Schwinn is my sponsor and they do a contest where they give away a bike every week and all of the attendees that come to the show are entered to win a bike. I think it’s a really cool way for people to get involved in the show.” While Clark looks forward to putting his variety of skills on display for attendees of the Trenton Summer Festival, he is thankful for the way in which the city has conducted business with him in organizing his portion of the event. “The city has really been great,” he said. “Anytime you work with a city, they tend to be good at putting events on just because they do it so much. With that being said, having done hundreds of events per year, I know that not everyone is easy to deal with so it’s great to be able to work with a city like Trenton.”

COMMITTEE SELECTS UNIQUE CRAFTERS AND FOOD VENDORS FOR THIS YEAR’S FESTIVAL To every festivalgoer who believes high school math skills go untapped after graduation, meet metal sculptor John Formato, a New York state artist who is new to the Trenton Summer Festival. He is bringing his oneof-a-kind whimsical sculptures (see photos), which he fabricates from recycled railroad ties, and larger free form pieces fashioned from sheet steel. Math skills are an integral part of the creative process, he said. “I enjoy geometry and love doing what I do — we are having a blast,” he said, referring to his wife,

Sandie, who assists with custom orders and helping people “pick out just the right piece for themselves or for a gift.” A participant in fairs and festivals throughout the eastern United States, Formato said he added Michigan to his schedule after making friends with Michiganians during the last 10 years of travel. While in town for the Festival, the Formatos will have the chance to visit them. According to Festival Chairman Scott Barr, Formato is among more than 120 crafters who will be staged along West Jefferson this year, offering

festivalgoers unique items of clothing, accessories, jewelry and decorative pieces for home and garden. Barr said 33 crafters are new this year.

“The ‘butterfly lady’ is back this year, too,” he said, noting that the artist Continued on page 14

features butterflies in her lamps and picture frames. For those who are drawn to the Festival for the food concessions, Barr said the organizing committee has accepted applications from 20 vendors to satisfy a crowd both hungry and thirsty. The expansive menu offers a variety of choices that includes sandwiches, chopped sirloin, hot fudge sundaes, and festive fruit dishes served in pineapples and watermelons. The city’s Special Needs Activities Program (SNAP) will be the beneficiary of Care2Share Baking, a division of Ned’s Pretzels, an Otisville com-

SHORTLINE SPIKES pany that commits more than 20 percent of its sales to anti-bullying antiviolence programs throughout Michigan. SNAP is a six-week summer camp program run through Trenton Parks and Recreation for cognitively impaired children and adults from the metro Detroit area. Campers take part in activities and events on site or during field trips, giving them the opportunity to enhance social and communication skills while familiarizing them with their community. Ned’s Pretzels owner Jeanine McMillin said they will be selling a variety of

seasoned pretzels, including those dipped in chocolate and embellished with caramel, peanut butter and candy pieces. Additionally, they will be selling scones and breads made with Michigan organic ingredients. “The Festival Committee has had a sampling of the products,” said Barr. “So good! And the proceeds are for a good cause within our community.” Vendors and crafters open for business with the start of the Festival each day and continue until at least the start of evening entertainment when the crowds tend to gravitate to the stages, said Barr.

“One year, though, visitors continued walking throughout the Festival and making purchases, so we give vendors and crafters the option to stay open if they would like,” he said.
