By Brian Rzeppa The 67th incarnation of the PNC Roar on The River has arrived and it’s primed to be as entertaining a weekend as ever. With new acts, events and the alwaysentertaining boat races on the docket, The Roar stands to be one of the biggest events of the summer once again. Running from Friday, July 14, through Sunday, July 16, the Roar will offer something for all ages, especially with some of the new additions that have been made to the event. A community picnic and healthy walk sponsored by Henry Ford Health System and Molina Healthcare, respectively, will offer free hot dogs, water and healthy snacks on Saturday, while Friday is set to feature some new entertainment all its own. The classic “Taste of the Races” kickoff party, sponsored by Rodgers Chevrolet, will have offerings from restaurants all around the area and while that is going on, a “Rowing on the River” race between Trenton and Grosse Ile high schools will be occurring. With two free concerts throughout the night provided by Hines Drive and Phoenix Theory, a weekend’s worth of fun will take place just on Friday alone. As Linda Francetich, the director of marketing, entertainment and public relations explained, the feedback for Friday nights has always been great and they’ve continued to add to the offerings. “The location of the event has always been amongst people’s favorite parts of the Roar, but the Friday

PNC Bank’s “Roar on the River” is expected to be entertaining as ever and is one of the biggest events of the summer.

Restaurants from all over Downriver will be serving samples at the “Taste of the Races” kickoff party Friday, July 14.

Night Party has really grown into one of the biggest hits. For the concerts, we’ve gone from a stage in a tent to a major production stage by the water, so we’ve really continued to improve,” Francetich said. Though Friday will be a blast, Saturday seems set to be just as entertaining. A children’s fun fair, pancake breakfast and tours of the Detroit Fire Boat will be available throughout the day, as will two more concerts by The Toppermost Beatles and Fifty Amp Fuse, along with the boat races themselves.

What could possibly steal the show on Saturday night will be a firework show sponsored by Jackson Snider Parker Dentistry. With the first firework fired off being done in memory of Fred Miller, the longtime race director who died earlier this year, the weekend itself stands to be a tribute to him. “I look forward to the event every year because it’s my baby and it’s going to be bittersweet for me with Fred’s passing,” Francetich said. “It’s a personal struggle to be honest, because there are no words for

the loss of him. What I’m looking forward to is to make him proud of all of us and carrying on his legacy.” Those thoughts were echoed by Ronnie Ruelle, the director of the Taste of the Races. “He’s a legend and he’s a role model for all the young people,” she said. “The races wouldn’t be here without him and they wouldn’t have continued if it weren’t for him. He’s really the Godfather of the Races and was the reason behind its success, so this will be in honor of him.” In addition to the first firework being done in his memory, a memorial serSEE PAGE 3

vice for Miller that is open to the public will be held in the big tent at 7 p.m. on Saturday. With Miller’s passing the organizers of the event had to come together with other members of the racing community to be able to pick up the slack, but Francetich believes that the collaborative effort has helped build some bridges that will be helpful in future events. “This year’s event has bridged the Trenton Outboard Racing Club with the Executive Committee of the Roar to work together and cover all of the many aspects of Fred’s involvement and contributions. They’ve really helped a lot this year.” With so many moving parts and different elements that haven’t been faced in years past, Francetich be-

lieves that the addition to this year’s event will help the overall entertainment reach new heights and could set the standard for years to come. “Our normal events have become so fine-tuned over the years, but we have a lot of new events this year. It’s always interesting when you add a new element to see if it takes root and can be a part of the following year’s event, so this year’s Roar is one that I’m really looking forward to.”

New events added this year By Brian Rzeppa

For an event that has run for nearly seven decades, one of the major challenges for organizers is to provide enough new attractions to keep things feeling fresh while also not stripping away from the fabric that has been built. With this year’s Roar on the River, the main elements such as the boat races and the Friday Night Party will still be there, but there will be a few added elements that should attract all sorts of different people. On Friday, the Roar will be playing host to a friendly rowing competition between Trenton High School and Grosse Ile High School that will give each crew team the opportunity to showcase their talents in front of a big crowd. The Taste of the Races will return on the 14th and will feature food from more than 30 restaurants, including a few making their first appearance at the event. Saturday will take things to the next level, as a Community Picnic, sponsored by Henry Ford Health System, has been added and will provide attendees with a free hot dog, chips and a healthy snack. Also on Saturday will be a fireworks show, presented by Jackson Parker Snider Dentistry (if the radar is predicting rain however, the fireworks will be moved to Friday). A VIP Saturday night party sponsored by Rodgers Chevrolet has been added to the docket as well. As Linda Francetich, the director of marketing, entertainment and public relations for the Roar explained, the partnership with Rodgers Chevrolet is one that has continued to grow over the years. “We’ve been partners with them for about five years and they are very enthusiastic about being part of the boat races every year,” she said. “They’re very community oriented and it’s been a great partnership.” With each of the new additions that have been made to this year’s event, the ultimate focus has not changed throughout: bring the community closer together. “Every year that we have done this our effort has always been to bring the different communities of Downriver together,” Francetich said. “We feel like with the events that we’ve added to the Roar this year, it’ll all go toward that goal.” Considering the success that the Roar has had over the years in providing Downriver with entertainment, there is no need to reinvent the wheel. With the additions that have been made to this year’s event however, the appeal of the weekend should only strengthen. 2017 ROAR ON THE RIVER • TRENTON TRIB SUPPLEMENT 5

There was nothing more shocking than to hear of the passing of our race founder, Fred Miller, on March 6, 2017. The news spread quickly and swiftly amongst the PNC Bank Roar on the River committee and the entire ABPA (American Power Boat Association) racing community and beyond. The pain and disbelief was heartwrenching and unexpected. How could this be happening? Fred WAS the race! He was our mentor, our friend, our organizer … our ROCK. There is so much to be said about Fred. Where can you even begin? He was the most dynamic and energized 78-year-old you would ever have had the pleasure of encountering and working with. He was the founder of the Roar on the River, as well as a fierce competitor on the waters in his racing days. Fred’s main role was the PNC Bank Roar on the River race coordinator. He set the foundation for the race to run as smoothly as the Detroit River waters at sunrise. The flawless choreography of bringing racers in from all over the United States, and even as far as Norway, was managed by his brilliance with skilled ease. Not to mention the years and years of sponsor

relationships that only Fred could cultivate from the beginning of the event in 1950. Some sponsors have been with the race since its inception. Fred had friends and associates from literally all over the world. The APBA race circuit coordinates races that include the SST-45 and SST-200 World Championships, which have been held on the Detroit River Trenton channel in Trenton for many years. These prestigious World Championships have been awarded to the Trenton event, mainly due to Fred’s professional affiliation, expert coordination and the skilled organization of TORC (Trenton Outboard Racing Club). The race will carry on under

the direction of John Broge, Fred’s protégé. “Fred had a way of sizing up the big picture and fitting a particular circumstance into the big picture. I imagine Fred looking at us, everyone involved in putting on the Roar on the River, kicked back in a chair with his feet up and laughing while he asks us what we are going to do now. What are we going to do now that Fred is not here? Our answer is that we are going to make this the best Roar on the River ever. We will honor not only Fred’s commitment, but our own as well,” Broge said. Paul Jocks, the head executive director of the PNC Bank Roar on the River, who has known Fred since 1980, is another boat racing “family member” of the Fred Miller community. “Fred had many talents both on and off the water and was always willing to share and mentor others,” Jocks said. “I learned a lot working with Fred, but will always remember his positive attitude, especially when working on problems. He believed there was always a solution and when a problem was resolved he’d always say, ‘That one’s resolved, on to the next!’ I’m

Fred and his wife, Merry, who was o en at his side during the races.

6 2017 ROAR ON THE RIVER • TRENTON TRIB SUPPLEMENT

(1939-2017) sure he’d give us the same advice regarding his passing.” Like father like daughter, Stacy (Miller) Iwanicki carries the legacy of Fred, as she inherited Fred’s “get’er done” spirit and passion for the outdoors. While she is not a boat racer, similar to “Army brats,” she grew up in the racing circuit family with Fred’s wife, Merry, often at his side. Gordie Miller, Fred’s son, however, has raced on the waters for many years. The race will continue with a heartfelt mission and determination from every person involved to make Fred proud of his legacy. He has passed on to us lifelong lessons on spirit, respect and countless other schoolings that you can only get from a father figure. Fred, we will miss your guidance, your sparkling blue eyes and your enthusiasm and passion for racing. During each race, we will take solace in knowing that you will have the BEST seat in the house rooting for everyone during each and every lap. We are grateful for your mentorship, tough love and for being a part of our lives. Race in Peace, Fred. NOTE: There will be a public memorial for Fred Miller at the 2017 PNC Bank Roar on the River on Saturday, July 15, at 7 p.m. in the main tent. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Rodgers Chevrolet to sponsor Downriver’s largest taste-fest held at the 2017 PNC Roar on the River

The PNC Roar on the River, a long-running Downriver event organized by the Trenton Rotary Club, has again partnered with Rodgers Chevrolet for this year’s event. This year the Woodhaven auto dealership will sponsor both the “Taste of the Races” kickoff party plus a brand new event, “The Taste on the Terrace at the Chateau.” The Taste of the Races, to be held on Friday, July 14, is the only outdoor taste-fest held Downriver. For $25 (or $200 for 10 tickets) hundreds are in attendance to enjoy the samplings of upwards of 35 local eateries and stay for an after party featuring the sounds of The Phoenix Theory, a highly

regarded southeast Michigan-based band. On Saturday, July 15, in Elizabeth Park’s newly remodeled banquet center, “Chateau on the River,” Rodgers Chevrolet will sponsor “The Taste on the Terrace at the Chateau.” Just prior to the fireworks in the air-conditioned Chateau, up to 200 VIP guests will dine at the buffet, enjoy cocktails and watch the fireworks front and center on the terrace. Fifty Amp Fuse and The Toppermost Beatles will be entertaining before and after the fireworks show. Tickets are $25 each and are expected to sell out quickly. Rodgers Chevrolet first partnered with the PNC Bank Roar on the River in

2012, and the boat that it sponsored was one of the big winners that year. “We enjoy the races and love the fact that it contributes to the community as well,” said Joe Posby, the dealership’s general manager. “Our entire crew looks forward to it every year.” Trenton Rotary and PNC are proudly hosting what is believed to be the longestrunning outboard boat race in the United States. The race not only provides a major event that area resi-

dents can enjoy for free, but puts thousands of dollars back into the community by hiring local businesses to provide the necessary services to stage a quality event.

The Taste of the Races is the only outdoor taste-fest held in the Downriver area.

2017 ROAR ON THE RIVER • TRENTON TRIB SUPPLEMENT 17

By Brian Rzeppa Following the boat races, which are sure to impress, Saturday night at the PNC Roar on the River is set to be capped off in a most enjoyable way: fireworks. Sponsored by JSP Dental in Trenton, the fireworks show is scheduled to kick off at 10 p.m. Debbie Jackson, administrative director of the Downriver Youth Performing Arts Center and wife of Dr. Noel Jackson, noted that the decision to bring the fireworks to the Roar was an easy one, done with the community in mind. “There were a couple of years where there were fireworks at the Roar and they just make the evening more enjoyable for everyone concerned. We thought it would be a great way to continue our involvement with the community,” she said. Very active within the community, the Jacksons feel that sponsoring events such as this one — and a number of other causes in the area in which they are involved — create a sense of community spirit and enrich the lives of others. “With events like the Roar, which is a no-cost event, it makes it available

to everyone and it’s an opportunity for families to spend time together and for people to socialize. It brings everyone closer and we’re happy to do that,” Debbie Jackson said. “Our basic tagline is to improve lives through dentistry and this is another way to give back to the community to improve lives,” Dr. Jackson said. “If it wasn’t through the dentistry it wouldn’t be possible. We support the street fair, we do scholarships and we support just about every fundraiser in one way or another throughout the area, so we really work to make our office one of those tools to help make our community better.” While it has not yet been decided if this will be an annual event, this year’s fireworks show promises to be a special one. The first firework that will be released will especially have deeper meaning. “The very first shoot of the fireworks will be commemorative of Fred Miller, the director of the Roar on the River who passed away this year. We think it’ll be a special memorial to him, as well as an acknowledgement of how important the boat races have been for so long.”
