Abu Dhabi is a city of fusion. A region steeped in history and ancient civilisations has grown into one of the world’s most affluent areas. The United Arab Emirates is indeed a unique destination and could not have been more welcoming as our venue for the TRENDYGOLF spring/summer photo shoot.

TREND Is the collar a thing of the past?

Yas Links, our host club, offered us some spectacular scenery and an ideal setting to put the clothing from many of the world’s leading brands through its paces. The golf course is exceptional, ranked number one in the Middle East and inside the top 50 in the world according to Golf Digest. It’s hard to argue with those rankings. Opened in 2010, the Kyle Phillipsdesigned course is just 15 minutes from the airport but is the first and only true links course in the Middle East.

3 EDITOR’S NOTE Welcome to the 2017 spring/summer edition of The Guide. It’s an exciting time of the year for anyone with a keen interest in golf. While the UK is an unpredictable beast when it comes to our weather, at least we know we have a bit more chance of enjoying the sunshine and some ideal golfing conditions. Here at TRENDYGOLF, we keep a close eye on the world of golf fashion as it evolves around us. These are exciting times with new ideas and innovation reaching us all the time. The progress in technology has been nothing short of astounding in the past few years and the choice out there allows us to pass this on to customers. We select from the very best leading brands around the globe and we tap in to those who are knowledgeable about their subject – from the designers and manufacturers to those who wear the products. And although there is choice and diversity in what we offer, we maintain the highest of standards in ensuring everything we stock is of premium quality. As well as the full range of golf wear, there are some excellent casual items and leisurewear, which fit our ethos of style and performance. We certainly hope The Guide will give you a few ideas. Inside this issue, you’ll also find exclusive interviews with top stars Thomas Pieters and Camilo Villegas, who discuss their fashion ideas as well as their golfing exploits. CA M I LO V I LLEGAS Camilo Villegas has given hope to us all. Despite a workout and lifestyle regime, which has given him the ripped physique of a middleweight boxing champion, it’s heartening to know that the popular Colombian likes the occasional beer after a hard day’s grind and is not averse to the odd chocolate treat either.

Unlike some of us, there’s not too much excess fat on Villegas, judging by his photo shoot with J.Lindeberg after returning to the brand where he has spent most of his career. Villegas has four PGA Tour wins to his name – most recently the 2014 Wyndham Championship. But the 35-year-old has also claimed finishes in the top-13 in all four Majors, with his best result in the US PGA in 2008 at Oakland Hills when he was tied fourth behind eventual champion Padraig Harrington.

Villegas is a sports enthusiast and he is in the gym most days – including during tournaments – and pursues an active lifestyle with cycling or paddleboarding particular favourites away from the golf course. But there is some balance in his life. He said: “Back in Colombia when I grew up, I was just a normal guy. We would go out and drink – sometimes a little bit more than we should have. “I’m not a heavy drinker or anything but I’ve been getting into IPAs (pale ale beers) over the past couple of years and there is nothing better than getting in after a long day at work and having one or two beers before you go to bed. It’s more likely to be one than three, let’s put it that way! “I think it’s a case of everything in moderation. One beer per night is not going to kill you and it can sometimes bring that little bit of happiness you need. “And I eat everything. I try to eat the clean things to have the energy, but that doesn’t mean there are no desserts or chocolate! “In terms of fitness, I do a mix of everything. I do cycling for cardio, I love throwing the paddleboard in the water and I love pushing the weights when it’s the right time. I’m pretty good with my recovery and mobility stuff. “I do a variation on a lot of things and I don’t focus on one thing. I’m not the biggest guy but I am lean, I’m fast and I’m pretty mobile. I’m kind of where I want to be. “I work out year-round. There might be little tweaks but I enjoy doing weights during tournaments. I cut back on the cardio during tournaments a little bit. You’ve got to be smart and listen to your body. You need to make sure that come Thursday to Sunday, you are not fatigued.” After a short spell away from JL, Villegas revealed strong connection with the brand brought him back.

He said: “It might sound a little clichéd, but you’ve got to follow your heart. I have a strong connection and a strong past with JL and I’ve always felt comfortable with JL.

With such an active lifestyle and career, Villegas believes he has everything covered with the brand carrying the name of the “crazy” Swede, who returned to his old stomping ground as creative director in 2015.

“I just love JL and it has been me for many years. I like the athletic look – not only with my gym stuff but also with golf stuff. A lot more players are going for tighter shirts and more technical performance shirts.

He said: “There are other brands out there making cool products but my heart is with JL and when Johan came back to JL, it was nice to have the opportunity to get back working with him. I’ve been talking with him a lot – Johan is Johan. He is such a creative guy and I give him a hard time about being crazy – he is in a way – but it’s perfect for what he does.”

“JL gives you the opportunity to be flashy or classy – both in a good way. Both are perfectly acceptable and cool. My own style would be classy and mixed with performance. “But you’ve definitely got to feel good when you are out there and I feel great when I am wearing JL. It’s my taste, my personality and to my liking when I open the closet. “If it leads to a better attitude on the golf course, then it can lead to a better performance too.” CA M I L O V I L L E GA S I N T E RV I E W

And he’s determined to get back to the level of contesting for the sport’s biggest honours. He said: “I am at a point in my career where I am proud of what I have accomplished. But I still continue to work hard to come back and play at the level that I know I am capable of.”

HOT U N DER T H E COLLA R LESS It’s by no means a new phenomenon, but it looks like it’s here to stay. The collarless shirt has been around in various guises and has not always been welcomed at golf clubs by those who prefer a more traditional style. At the 2005 Masters, Tiger Woods prowled the edge of the par three 16th hole assessing his options – the type of shot, which would strike fear into many amateurs. Many of us know what happened next. He made the perfect connection, the ball trundled down to the hole, teetered on the edge of the cup just long enough to show the brand to millions on TV and then toppled in. Cue pandemonium at Augusta. PG: 6

A chaotic high five with caddy Steve Williams ensued and Woods was wearing a fresh green jacket an hour or so later. It’s a shot which is still fondly remembered by golf fans and Woods performed his heroics in a trademark red shirt. Yes, in case you hadn’t realised by now, it didn’t have a collar on it. As much as we remember that magical chip, did we remember the turtle-neck-style collar on his red shirt? Perhaps that tells its own story. Is it really that outrageous to make do without those extra bits of material around the neck of a polo shirt?Just as in any walk of life, some prefer the traditional look, while others prefer to push the boundaries.

There is choice and diversity to suit everyone and the fashion boundaries have clearly been redefined in recent times. Those more traditional smart brogue-style golf shoes are still widely available, but so too are the spikeless trainers. Even those hi-tops and hoodies are becoming more visible. Likewise, how necessary is it to tuck in your shirt nowadays? Many clubs are no longer so intent on enforcing this as perhaps they would have 15 years ago. This relaxation of the dress code makes it easier to take a more casual, everyday lifestyle look on to the golf course. T R E N D: NO C OL L A R

You made the switch to Nike this year. What was the big attraction?

When I got the call that I had the chance to sign with Nike, it was the quickest decision I have ever made on something like that. If you are an athlete, it’s a kid’s dream to be sponsored by Nike.

How has life changed for you since the Ryder Cup?

I’ve only played two so just being in contention would be nice to feel that pressure. If I can cross the line and win one, that would be amazing but hopefully, I have got a lot more to play.

Things haven’t changed that much, although my schedule has changed! There’s a lot more attention for golf in Belgium, which is good to help grow the sport and for me as well.

I’ve played in that intense pressure playing in a Ryder Cup but it’s still a different environment. That was very good for my confidence, knowing there were millions of people watching.

It was very easy to say ‘yes’. It was always the brand I wanted to wear. It’s very trendy and there is a whole vibe around the brand. It’s young, it’s professional and they have got everything you want. The quality of the clothing is unbelievable. I wore Nike when I was in college and loved it. Then had to go back and wear something else, which was hard! But now I’m in my happy place. How would you describe your own fashion? Do you like the attention or prefer to stay in the background with your fashion choice? I make my statement in my own way, I guess. I like to wear a lot of black and that’s the kind of person I am. I’m not like Ian Poulter, where I have to worry about which belt or hat I’m wearing. I totally respect his style but it’s not my style. I’ve worn a couple of bad shirts in the past but if it’s something really quirky, I just won’t wear it.

I don’t feel any extra pressure – not at all. One of my goals was to get a PGA Tour card by the end of the year and I’ve done it in two tournaments. That’s not me being cocky but it’s nice to get that goal out of the way really quickly. Now I can enjoy the year and hopefully win a couple of tournaments. That would be nice. It’s been a positive start to the season, are you worth putting our fiver on for the Masters? You never know! I’m hitting it well and driving it straight, which I wasn’t at the start of the season. My form has been going pretty well. I have missed a couple of cuts but I would rather miss a couple of cuts and then be in contention to win, rather than finishing 30th every week. I’ve been in contention twice in four tournaments so if I can keep up a 50-per-cent ratio over the rest of the season, I will be happy.

The Nike Dri-FIT stuff is really nice. I prefer a light cotton shirt but the new Nike polos fit very nicely and are stretchy – they are really good.

I haven’t been to Augusta to play so let’s be patient and try to take it all in.

Do you think golf should maintain a dress code or should players be allowed to wear what they like – shorts in hotter temperatures or denim jeans for example?

If I can get into contention this year in one or two Majors, it would be lovely but the Masters stands out for me. It’s going to be pretty special as it’s my first one this year.

I’m not so sure about jeans but when it comes to wearing shorts – why not?

I’ve been there a couple of times but I’ve never played so it will be cool to tee it up.

Do you consider yourself to be a contender for the Majors now?

But there is different pressure coming down the stretch in a normal tournament. Finishing second recently at the Genesis Open gives me the same kind of confidence that I can compete. I was in contention to win a PGA Tour event and that is why you play golf. Don’t get me wrong, the Ryder Cup is very cool but it’s not like winning a tournament. What are your favourite other sports and do you have any sporting heroes? I like my snowboarding in the winter and I play some squash and basketball. In golf, Tiger Woods is obviously a hero. In tennis, Roger Federer is a great athlete and personality. I think he’s a cool guy with the way he handles himself and has that whole calm demeanour. He used to get angry at himself, a bit like I still do sometimes, but he has learned to handle that and is a very calm dude now. You are allowed to ban or introduce one rule in golf, what would it be? I would definitely get tough on slow play: you get one warning and then you can go into the clubhouse. I hate slow play so the rule changes are a good thing. For TV and stuff, people hate watching someone in the trees for 10 minutes trying to figure out where he can take a drop. If I played with someone who was really slow, I would definitely tell him. They are rules and if you break them, you should get penalised. If you go over your 45 seconds, you should be penalised. So if that means your smart office attire can translate directly to the first tee, so much the better. Although there is an abundance of athletic leisurewear available, there is a growing trend towards a look which would be just as suitable in a professional workplace environment. There are even golf shoes which would not look out of place during a business meeting. GOING BEYOND THE NORM WITH G/FORE

There is so much more to G/FORE than colourful golf gloves and unique shoes. The progressive American brand, created by fashion-industry pioneer Mossimo Giannulli in 2011 – founder of the billion-dollar clothing company Mossimo Inc – has enjoyed a meteoric rise in its first few years on the golf scene. Worn by Bubba Watson – two-time US Masters champion – those premium-quality gloves in a dizzying variety of colours and an ever-increasing selection of classy shoes is enough to hold the interest of any golfer. In keeping with its growing reputation for bold innovation, the spring/summer 2017 collection boasts plenty of striking colour schemes, unique style ideas and trademark G/FORE audacity. But there is also a classical tradition at the heart of the collection, with a modern spin added to it. PG: 12
