Dean an England star Highly-rated youngster spends time with the national set-up

YOUNG Northampton Town FC goalkeeper Dean Snedker has been called in to the England under 19 squad for their friendly with Denmark on February 5th following his spell with the national youth squad last month. Snedker spent some time at St George’s Park, the new home of the Football Association, in January under the guidance of coaches Martin Thomas and Simon Smith. The 18 year-old was joined by Manchester City’s Angus Gunn, Alex Palmer of West Bromwich Albion, Luke Coddington of Middlesbrough and John Sutherland of Manchester United at the training camp. Cobblers boss Aidy Boothroyd was delighted for the player, who has progressed through the Town youth system, and said, “This is a terrific opportunity for Dean. He is only 18

years-old but there are not too many 18 year-old ‘keepers who have played first team football and this call up shows the progress he is making is being recognised at the highest level. “Northampton Town have a fine tradition of producing good goalkeepers with the best recent example being Mark Bunn who has been playing regularly in the Premier League (with Norwich City). “The call up is also a massive pat on the back to our academy, who are producing a number of exciting young players who could have very bright futures ahead of them. “It also sends out a message to local youngsters that Northampton Town and our excellent academy is the best place to develop your skills and experience. “We hope Dean enjoyed the training camp and it will have been a wonderful experience for him.”

IT’S not something you’d traditionally associate with a football club, but the Cobblers have decided to launch their very own branded street dance lessons. “With the likes of Britain’s Got Talent promoting a variety of new entertainment acts, street dance is something that has started to really take off around the country,” communication chiefs at NTFC tell us. ‘Cobblers Dance Crew’ classes will run in eight week blocks at Sixfields Stadium for eight to 12 year-olds, on Monday nights between 5-6pm. Prices start from £3.50 per session for season ticket holders. Following the completion of the course, the crewe will showcase their talent on the pitch at the games against Accrington Stanley on March 9th and Barnet on April 27th.

Golden girl Laura on track to help youngsters with Asthma New queen of the track is the face of the ‘Big Up Your Chest’ campaign DOUBLE gold medalwinning track cyclist, Laura Trott, has become the face of Asthma UK’s online resource to help 16 to 25 year olds living with the condition. The Olympic hero, who was recently made an OBE, defied the odds to become a cycling champion after she was born with a collapsed lung and developed severe asthma. And the 20 year-old now wants to inspire other young people with asthma by supporting the charity’s Big Up Your Chest Facebook page. “When I was a child I developed severe asthma,” said Laura. “As a result, my doctors advised me to start swimming to help me to regulate my breathing and later I took up cycling with my mum. “I was overjoyed when I won two gold medals for track cycling at the London 2012 Olympics - I couldn’t believe how far I’d come

and I was so proud to fly the flag for Britain! “I was able to achieve these amazing victories because I manage my asthma by taking my medicines and making sure I’m looking after my condition sensibly. “It still impacts me physically as I tend to get a dry cough after I’ve been training so I have to be aware of my limits. “I hope that I can inspire other people my age with asthma through my own accomplishments and show that with the right treatment, management and attitude to asthma, it doesn’t have to hold you back.” The Big Up Your Chest page is an award-winning health resource developed by Asthma UK. Supplement your vitamins the natural, healthy way We all need vitamins and minerals to function at our optimum, but popping pills may not be the way forward...

or decades there has been the opportunity and the emphasis on the need to supplement for vitamin and mineral intake as we may not be consuming enough through our daily diet. We take on less vitamin D through lack of sunlight (see Doctor Pippa Bennett’s column on vitamin D on page 20), cold weather may increase likelihood of infections (Shepherd R. J., Sheck P. N., 1998) and hot rooms with central heating can dry out the epithelial tissues that may increase the incidence of upper respiratory tract 12

infections, colds and coughs. With Valentine’s Day approaching fast the last thing we want is to be curled up in bed fighting illness rather than spending quality time with our beloved partners!

Foundations of health As always the foundations of health are to be found within the foundations of healthy diet. Consuming a variety of at least five plus servings of fruit and vegetables a day, lean protein foods alongside wholemeal carbohydrates should provide recommended daily amounts for vitamins and minerals. However, according to research at the University of California based on US populations (Saltman, 1993) vitamins and minerals such as Calcium, vitamin C and Iron can at times be lacking in diets due to food processing, cooking methods or even lifestyle.

URBAN MYTH: Expensive vitamin and mineral supplements could do more harm to us than good.

Vitamins Vitamin C Ever since Captain Cook realised the power of citrus fruits in preventing scurvy for his sailors whilst navigating the world, vitamin C has become synonymous with healing and fighting infection. As vitamin C is water soluble it is unfortunately not easily stored within the body. Subsequently the demands for vitamin C supplementation has created supply amounting to a multi-million pound industry. Candidates for supplementation would be those recovering from surgery and infection, smokers and those receiving other drugs for medicinal purposes that may affect vitamin C absorption. The best sources of vitamin C for normal healthy populations are vegetables and fruit with as little processing and interference from cooking as possible. One cup of freshly squeezed orange juice contains 200% (125mg) of RDA (Recommended Daily Allowance). If time is of the essence or you don’t have an orange squeezer, take comfort in that a cup of concentrated orange juice will still provide approximately 90-95mg, or 150%, of RDA. Ironically, aim to avoid the marketing phenomenon of ‘not from concentrate’

orange juice as the processing and lengthy storage of ‘not from concentrate’ orange juice can diminishes other valuable nutrients such as vitamin A and thiamine (Ewoldt, 2009). A half cup of broccoli will provide 50mg (83%) of RDA. To protect the fragile vitamin C and enhance the cancer protecting properties of broccoli, some studies have found that slicing broccoli into smaller florets prior to cooking and leaving for several minutes activates essential enzymes that may improve the antiinflammatory properties of broccoli in your meal (Ambrosone, Tang, 2009). Light steaming or stir frying at low temperatures for three to five minutes will help to retain fragile vitamin C. As a rule of thumb if your broccoli is water sodden and tasteless, all of the nutritional value has been lost in the cooking process!

Iron RDA in the UK for the age group 11-50 currently stands at 8.7mg for men and 14.8mg for women. However, the National Diet and Nutrition Survey (2011) reported whilst men are matching RDA, women were under with an average intake of 10mg. Deficiencies in iron intake may lead to reduced physical and intellectual performance, chronic fatigue, shortness of breath and ultimately anemia. Is there a case for supplementation? Thankfully iron is readily available in poultry, red meat and fish. Unfortunately, low calorie diet fads and avoidance of red meat may be contributor to iron deficiency for women. If you are vegetarian or do not like meat and fish, sensible substitutes rich in iron are soya beans, tofu, olives and asparagus. One cup of soya beans provides 8.84mg - 50% of the RDA for women! - and provides a great salad foundation! Twitter.com/TRENDHFL

Diet&Nutrition Vitamins Calcium With the onset of fad diets and less dairy consumption, it is possible to not consume the required RDA of calcium. Calcium builds bone, is essential to blood clotting and helps regulate fluid balance in the body. Deficiency many result in muscle pain and stiffness. Vegetables can provide good sources of calcium; follow Popeye’s example and reach for a cup of spinach that provides 24% of RDA. Alternatively, collard greens such as kale and cabbage provide 26% of RDA. Fish; sardines in particular, are a great alternative to dairy, providing 34% of RDA per serving, though ensure cooking is light to preserve goodness. If dairy is not an issue, skimmed milk provides a slightly higher proportion of calcium compared to semi-skimmed and whole milk due to fat removal and subsequent higher water content where calcium is found. Although whole milk is higher in fat it also contains vitamins A and D within the fat. For children and those that are likely to be fatigued due to high intensity in sport and exercise, whole milk is an easy way to boost growth and aid recovery.

Dangers Supplementation for pregnant women, unwell populations and children may be necessary upon recommendation of a dietician. For the normal, healthy population, reaching for magic mega dose pills beyond a rounded wholesome diet should not be necessary. Indeed, too much calcium (300mg+) can inhibit iron absorption in the body and too much iron may lead to nausea. Vitamin C is credited with aiding iron absorption, however if combining several 14

supplements containing vitamin C and iron amounting to two to three times percentage RDA of each, then promoted iron uptake in the body may lead to toxic effects such as increased risk of infection or liver damage! Cold weather, central heating, new fitness regimes and lack of sunlight all make their impact on our bodies, but combat this by eating how we were designed to; prepare and cook sensibly and save the money you’d spend on supplements for Valentines treats!

ost people do not have to be worried about getting too big when training with weights. Evidence suggests that less than 20 percent of men, and very few women, can develop large muscles even if they wanted to, regardless of what program they follow. Low load clams The clams exercise shown below essentially work out your deep lateral rotators and your gluteus max, medius and minimus, helping you tone these areas. These muscles are so important as they stabilise your hips and pelvis when you get out of bed, walk, run, swim, stand on one leg – everything! Most hip, knee and even lower back injuries come from not using enough of the glutes and making the hamstrings do all the work. This exercise will help stabilise your body when you move and protect you from further injury. This exercise is also suitable for people with injuries as it’s a low load exercise, your spine and hips remaining very still in neutral position and you’re just isolating your bum muscles.

Clams While lying on your side, keep both knees bent and flex the hips to 30 degrees. Keeping your heels touching and pelvis still, open your knees by contracting your glute medius bum muscles. This is a very slow, small and targeted movement. Repeat the movement slowly 10 to 15 times and switch sides.

Legs and bum Kneeling kick-backs The glutes are one of the largest muscle groups in the body and an area that most people want to tone. Fortunately, it’s relatively easy to isolate and exercise these muscles. This lower-body workout with clams (bottom left), will work your bum and your lower back. Assume the start position by kneeling down and supporting your upper body on your forearms or hands. Keeping your right knee bent and supporting you, slowly lift the left leg behind you so your foot raises up toward the ceiling. Return to start position and repeat with left leg. Do 10-15 on each side, three times.

Important for stability, posture and mobility, our calf muscles can also be a source of pain when they cramp or feel tight. Sitting down a lot or not moving much can be a major source of tightened calf muscles, and exercising them regularly can help allay such problems, as well as keeping your legs in great shape. The low-intensity exercise of calf raises is simple but is an excellent way to strengthen and tone your calf muscles, when done regularly. Stand up straight, grasping a chair or wall for balance. Position your feet hipwidth apart and raise up on to the balls of your feet. To make this exercise more challenging, try balancing your body weight on the ball of only one foot. Tuck your left foot behind your right heel and repeat the above steps. Then switch sides. Add weights on a barbell if required! Do 10-15 on each leg, three times.

Lower leg strength

The first article is on the lower leg and we will move on to other areas of the legs in the proceeding articles. There are a few simple lower leg strength tests and exercises that you can perform to see if you have the basic strengths required in some of the most important running muscles. At jogging pace, each leg has to absorb four times bodyweight during every step and there are around 2,000 steps to a mile. This puts the tests below in context. You need to be strong!

Calf raises For steady, distance running work. Three sets of 25 single leg calf or heel raise off the edge of a step with a two minute recovery is a standard strength test for a calf to see if there is an inherent weakness. If you are not moving through the whole range then you are cheating! Many Achilles and foot issues start with weakness in the calf. Remedial work for this is to build-up from the number of reps that you fail at, to the 25 required for three sets in a row, with a two minute recovery between sets. Do three sets of as many as you can to failure once a day and it will improve.

Lower leg strength Foot inversion There are important muscles (mostly Tibialis Posterior) that absorb the impact of the foot hitting the ground and control the tendency to roll in (pronation). If they allow too much rolling in or pronation then it affects the mechanics of the leg leading to inefficient running (slowness!) and possible injury. Test it: You should be able to stop your foot being pushed out (you will need someone to do this for you). The foot should not be able to be pushed away from the starting position shown. If it can then it is weaker than it should be. It does not matter how strong the person is - it should not move!

Foot inversion rehab Lay on a bed or sofa on the side to be exercised and the foot over the end or arm. Turn the foot up and in against an exercise band three sets of 15 repetitions for a very heavy exercise band (black or purple or an old inner tube). It is only the foot that should move, not the whole leg. Three sets of 15 should be manageable but tough. If you cannot repeat 15, reduce the tension - if it is easy, then increase the tension again. You can find exercise bands easily online!

This is just the start! I hope you get on well with these exercises. It all fits into a much bigger picture as you will see over the next few months! 18

Sunlight is more than just an indulgence - your body needs it! The Knowledge

W

e’ll have to wait for a while to get a decent dose of sunlight back in to our lives and all the way until June 21st for our longest, sun-filled day. But sunlight is important to our health and in particular to our levels of vitamin D, which is important for bone health, immune function, inflammation and muscle function. We need sunlight to convert our vitamin D into a biologically active form - it is the UVB rays we need, therefore most sunbeds do not and should not be an alternative! There are some factors that may limit your ability to have good vitamin D levels

‘Sunlight is important to our levels of vitamin D - which is crucial to our bone health, immune and muscle function’ through sunlight exposure, which include: Aging (impairs synthesis capacity), Skin pigmentation (melanin absorbs UVB photons), regular sunscreen use of more than SPF 15), clothing, cloud cover and atmospheric pollution and wintertime latitude of more than 35° north or south. Groups of the population at risk of not getting enough vitamin D include all pregnant and breast-feeding women, those aged under five and over 65, people who are not exposed to much sun, and people who have darker skin, such as those of African, AfricanCaribbean and South Asian origin. So if you are someone who spends most of your time indoors, you will be prone

to viruses through vitamin D deficiency! If you’re in any of the atrisk groups then do ask your GP to check your vitamin D levels. Normal levels should be over 50nmol/L. Your GP should be able to advise on supplementation if needed, though it is important not to over-supplement. If you would like to optimize vitamin D naturally then foods such oily fish, fortified cereals and milk can be good sources. Couple this with exposure to sunlight to convert those dietary sources. Your whole body does not need to be exposed in order to generate vitamin D - the hands and the face are sufficient.

Accumulating 20 minutes over the course of the day will generate enough vitamin D each day to raise levels sufficiently. Sun block above factor 15 prevents vitamin D synthesis, however factor 15 is the lowest factor that you should use in order to prevent skin damage and reduce your risk of skin cancer. A good balance between exposure and preventative is what’s needed! In the meantime, whilst we are waiting for the longest day, lets make the most of the little sunshine we have. Get up, get out and get active!

wanted to try to capture the carefree nature of falling in love...the excitement and the fun alongside the elegance and beauty of a bride,” said photographer Alisdair Tait on the shoot which dons these pages. Charged with creating something unique, interesting and eye catching, Alisdair commandeered Northants Trampoline Gymnastics Academy’s Moulton Park base and with the help of Great Britain international trampolinist Penny Mitchell and trampoline analyst Ross Whittaker, put together some truly stunning shots. “The most intriguing element of the pictures are the way Penny is effectively floating, walking on air if you like, and what the air does to the freedom of her dress and hair,” added Alisdair. “I think we shot something that looks fantastic, and certainly not something you see very often!”

Record breaking biker writes exclusively for TRENDHFL readers...

Exciting times are ahead as 2013 is off to a flying start! I

couldn’t have wished for a better start to 2013 as I’ve just become the first motorcycle racer to be signed up by Cranfield University as an Associate Rider! It’s a scheme that supports talented motorsport competitors. As well as backing from the university I will benefit from the knowledge of the academic team and the postgraduate students on its Motorsport Engineering and Management MSc, plus I’ll have access to state-of-the-art facilities. In return I will act as an ambassador for Cranfield’s Motorsport MSc, its students and alumni, hopefully leading students to get more involved with motorcycle racing and working on projects. I’m really looking forward to visiting Cranfield in the near future to meet the current students and give them an insight into real road racing from my perspective. This position is just one of the many exciting ventures that, along with my racing plans will make for a fantastic 2013. The off-season is an important time for me, not only fitness, sponsorship hunting and bike preparation wise, but it’s a chance to attend shows and events and represent my sponsors, giving them a return on their investment. Hanging out with MotoGP commentator Julian Ryder at the Classic Bike Guide Winter show at Newark was also a great opportunity to meet up with some of my fans and supporters. Then I took the Team Classic Suzuki XR69 I raced with me as I made a TV appearance on the new Superbike TV show, alongside presenters Jamie Whitham and Candice Collyer. The XR69 did even more showing off when it was displayed on the Draper Tools stand at the Motorcycle Trade show at the

My website and logo are receiving an overhaul and I should be able to reveal the new look in March. My most exciting announcement is the women riders association I am

developing. It began as this Facebook page (click HERE to view) but I have been overwhelmed by the response it attracted and I’ve decided to head up an association that brings events, courses, meet-ups, trackdays, touring, talks and discounts on products to women bikers. It’s just one of many exciting things I’m looking forward to in 2013 - it promises to be another memorable year!
