TAKING SUMMER BY STORM Five summer fashion trends are making an appearance in the everyday closets of women across the board. By Jessie Bekker

W

hile living in Minnesota can make us forget that we have even seen the summer sunshine, it’s never too early to do some spring cleaning and prepare a brand new summer wardrobe! Check out these five tips so you don’t miss out on the latest 2014 summer fashion trends.

3-D FLORALS

MAXI SKIRTS

Floral patterns meet lace to create a look you’re sure to pull off! Whether you find that perfect pair of floral high-waisted shorts, or a dress with pastel flowers covering a mesh crop top, brighten your closet, and your mood, with flowers so bold, you’ll think they’re real.

When the hot weather creeps in and the layers come flying off, don’t get stuck sweating in a pair of pants! If you’re not a mini-skirt type of girl, we’ve got the perfect fix for you: maxi skirts! This flowy and breezy alternative will give you comfort and coverage in almost any style and pattern your heart desires.

Get rid of the neon items of summers past and say hello to neutrals! Black and white, though simple colors are the ultimate way to add a little contrast to your wardrobe. When you’re out shopping for new summer clothing, grab a pair of white high-waisted shorts, a black and white striped blouse, and black flats for a great on-the-go look!

No one likes a “groutfit.” You know the one: grey pants, grey shirt- an outfit that looks like it came out of your grandmother’s wardrobe. Believe it or not, that’s the exact idea for our third summer fashion tip… well, kind of. This summer, don’t be afraid to choose your favorite bold color and layer different shades for a fun and stylish outfit!

BLACK AND WHITE

FULL MONOCHROMATIC LOOK

ROLLED-UP JEANS

If the weather just isn’t heating up and you’re dying to put a little Summer style into your stride, try rolling up a pair of skinny or boyfriend jeans. Not only will your ankles get a little loving from the warm sun, but you can also pair almost any shoe with it! Pair with white Keds or colored pumps to rock the streets in style. SUMMER 2014 TRAX

RELAXED,

Boyfriend jeans can be incorporated into any outfit without breaking the bank. By Vanessa Gabor

A

lthough the go-to summer clothing pieces tend to be skirts, shorts or dresses, pants, specifically the boyfriend jean, have seen a spike in their popularity for warmer months. The boyfriend jean, although not as free as a skirt or dress, is an easy way to dress up an outfit to look more put together, or to simply switch things up from the usual short shorts and skirts. The boyfriend jean made its way into women’s closets as regular women began taking their boyfriend’s jeans and styling them to wear themselves. Since then, high end brands such as rag & bone, J Brand, and Citizens of Humanity have all come out with this more relaxed cut of jeans especially for women. We would all love the luxury to own a pair of designer boyfriend jeans, however on a college budget, that is not always possible. I have personally selected three budget-friendly outfits for a family barbecue, an outfit to wear to class and one to wear on a date night.

DIY shorts Transforming an old pair of jeans into a trendy pair of shorts is easier than you think. By Lauren Engelhart

S

ometimes, trying to find the perfect pair of shorts can be tricky. So why not save the stress this summer and make a pair yourself? Because this is a great way to combine saving money with your own style and creativity, DIY shorts are quickly becoming more popular than ever. If you do not usually make your own clothes, there are a million different places that offer instructions that take you step-by-step through the process, including the Free People blog, Pinterest or YouTube. You can turn a pair of your old washed-out jeans into one-of-a-kind shorts by using one of many different techniques to make shorts your own; from painting or adding on small details, there are infinite possibilities. Here are some easy steps that show you how to change an old pair of high-waisted jeans into adorable lace shorts. 1 Go through your mom’s/aunt’s/ grandma’s old clothes, or search the racks of the closest thrift shop to find a pair of high-waisted jeans. Make sure you try them on in the store to get an idea of how they fit. This pair was found at Goodwill for only $3.99! 2 With the perfect pair of jeans in hand, the first step is to start cutting. The easiest way to do this is to put them on and draw lines at the length you want them to be cut with a white pencil or pen. *TIP: Draw the line longer than you want so there is room for error. You can always

1 2&3 4 5 6 7 8

IMAGES COURTESY OF LAUREN ENGELHART

adjust them by cutting more off later. 3 After you draw the line, take them off and start cutting one pants leg. It is easier to start from the outside and work your way in. It’s okay if the cut is not perfectly straight on the first try. 4 After making the cut on one of the pants legs, fold the leg over on top of the other leg. This is a good way to make the sides even and balanced. *TIP: Try them on again after this step to decide if the length is what you want. 5 For this pair, the ends of the shorts were frayed, but you can always just fold them up to make the bottom look cleaner. To fray the bottoms, take tweezers and gently pull the bottom fabric. This may be a white or lighter blue color. You can pull as much off as you please to create the frayed look. 6 After fraying the bottom, you can start to add some details. For this pair, lace was added to one of the legs and the pocket of the opposite leg. To do this, lay the lace fabric over the one leg. Cut it by outlining the shape leg and curve it along the edge of the pocket. 7 Next, you can do the same thing to the opposite pocket of the other leg. Lay the lace over the pocket and cut it out to match the shape of the pocket. 8 After laying the fabric out, use a fabric-friendly glue to secure the detail. It is important not use too much glue or to add glue where it is not needed. *TIP: Depending on the directions for the glue, let your new shorts sit to dry for at least two to four hours after applying. If you know how to sew, the fabric can also be sewn on. 9 The final product is ready! After your shorts have dried, try them on and show them off! SUMMER 2014

TRÉS

BIEN The natural sense of style possessed by the French is popping up more frequently around campus. By Eve Lewis IMAGE COURTESY OF DOLL JOINTS

W

hile it is no news that French women are known for their effortless sense of fashion, recently their influence has had an even more pronounced impact in the past few years. Red lipstick, striped tees, classic color schemes, no-fuss makeup and hair, and even French quotes have made it to everything from sweaters to casual tops. Nowadays, it seems like everyone wants a piece of that elegance that comes so naturally to the French. Many girls have a striped tee in their closet, or, if they are into fashion, are at least on the hunt for the perfect one. Originally an 1820s creation intended to make French sailors easier to find if they would fall overboard, it was Coco Chanel

“ ” Nowadays, it seems like everyone wants a piece of that elegance that comes so naturally to the French.

who made the tee with stripes acceptable for everyday wear. As a result of the tee’s popularity, various clothing stores and other designers started selling their own versions because of Chanel’s influence. While many French women (and men) have had the Breton striped tee as a staple in their closet for many years, other people around the world have caught on to the trend too. The classic look of horizontal stripes adds a little bit of print to an otherwise monotonous outfit. Likewise, stripes can easily be combined with other prints, which is very trendy right now, without making an outfit look or overdone. Red lipstick has always been associated with French

8

women. Even when the global trend of wearing the shade subsided throughout various periods of history, the ladies of France have always remained devout devotees. Today, the trend is back on again with celebrities like Taylor Swift and Rita Ora sporting the shade religiously. Even girls at the U are slowly acquiring a liking for it. Everywhere you go on campus, you can find at least one girl with the shade on her lips. A little color can brighten up any face, and makes one look instantly pulled together. The pop of a bright red lipstick needs to be worn systematically, as it will only look tasteful and chic if the rest of your makeup and hair styling is kept to a minimum. Their world-renowned effortless hair and makeup of French women, while maintaining an air of elegance, is the perfect example of how to tastefully look au natural. Girls at the U are definitely familiar with this, as it has never been cooler to give the straightener or curling iron a rest. Aside from striped tees, red lips, and no-fuss makeup, nothing has made the French influence more obvious than tees and sweatshirts with French words and sayings. And who can blame us? The French language is beautiful, and a little bit of French text makes a girl instantly look a little worldlier, even if she has never left the states. Stores like Madewell and J. Crew, among others, sell tops with sayings like “C’est La vie”, “Bonjour”, and “L’amour Triomphe de tout”. Going to Paris is many a girl’s dream. There is something about the city of love and fashion that enamors people from all walks of life. Because of this, it should be no surprise that the French have greatly influenced the trends we follow here at the U. Whether it is an elegant red lip or a classic striped shirt, Coco Chanel’s famous quote is so much easier to follow if we just do what the French do: “A girl should be two things: classy and fabulous.”

WHY DON'T YOU?

A NEW COLUMN TO INSPIRE YOU TO BE BOLD. By Meg Kelly

I IMAGE COURTESY OF LIAM MENDES

have always been inspired by the legendary work of Diana Vreeland, who served as editor of Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue. In August 1936, she first published her infamous “Why don’t you?” column in Harper’s Bazaar which would encourage women to take a leap of faith- in great style. Never taken literally, her outrageous ideas were instead meant to embolden readers to expand their horizons and become the best versions of themselves. While my spin-off version of “Why don’t you” isn’t necessarily as outlandish as Vreeland’s, they are meant to encourage one to think outside of the box this summer, and to never be boring.

WHY DON’T YOU… channel your inner 80’s Carrie Bradshaw and pair your sequined formal dress with a leopard cardigan? Whoever said prints let alone texture had to match?

WHY DON’T YOU… go on a spontaneous road trip with friends? Note to self: be sure to blast music featuring the likes of Hilary Duff, NSYNC and all other ‘00s artists you played on repeat during middle school. WHY DON’T YOU… do yoga on the beach?

WHY DON’T YOU… spend the longest day of the year (June 21st) tracking down the local ice cream truck that never seems to be driving through your neighborhood? If all else fails, resort to sampling every flavor that Sebastian Joe’s has to offer.

WHY DON’T YOU… try that DIY project on Pinterest that you have had pinned on your board the past 6 months but have never quite found the time (or motivation) for? There is no better time than the present.

WHY DON’T YOU… scour your local consignment store (or better yet your parent’s closet) for a wardrobe straight out of the 70’s, complete with bell-bottom jeans? Next task? Show off this outfit as you rollerblade (in great style I might add) on the bike trails.

WHY DON’T YOU… make summer 2014 a summer to remember?

STYLE SHIFT

A change in fashion influence is occurring with the help of some very chic bloggers. By Eve Lewis

I

n the past, fashion editors were almost omni- powerful when it came to their influence in the fashion industry. However, with the advent of the Internet, fashion bloggers have changed the distribution of this power drastically. No longer is the Editor-in-Chief of Vogue, Anna Wintour, considered a central authority when it comes to fashion dos or don’ts. Instead, bloggers have turned the fashion industry into a more democratic system where basically anyone who is able to gain a large enough following, can influence what you buy or wear. Here are some leading bloggers to follow:

THE BLONDE SALAD

Italian fashion blogger Chiara Ferragni was a full-time law student when she started her blog, The Blonde Salad. Since then, her high fashion looks have captured a huge following. Today, you will find her in the front row of the hottest runway shows during most fashion weeks. If that is not enough of a fairytale ending, she receives hundreds of designer items from fashion houses all around the world in the hope that she will wear them for her millions of followers to see. IMAGE COURTESY OF THE BLONDE SALAD

SONG OF STYLE

Interior designer and fashion blogger on the side, Aimee Song is the girl you wish was your best friend because besides her killer closet; she seems extremely down to earth as well. For her blog, she chronicles her globetrotting and fashionable lifestyle. One day she’ll be at work in L.A., the next day she’ll be running all over Paris to runway shows during Fashion Week, and another day, she’ll be in Kentucky visiting family and friends or helping out at an animal shelter. In short, this girl is someone who truly deserves all the success she has achieved. IMAGE COURTESY OF SONG OF STYLE

THE MAN REPELLER

After realizing that many of the high-fashion choices she makes tend to turn men off, Leandra Medine named her blog The Man Repeller. Boyfriend jeans, jumpsuits, shoulder pads, and overalls are all recent trends that don’t necessarily attract male attention. The Man Repeller is a collection of humorous, fashion-related posts for those with a strong interest in fashion and a sense of humor to boot. Visit this blog for a sartorial laugh! PINK NATION

PINK shines through maroon and gold on the U of M Campus. By Jaemee Schroeder

M

aroon and gold may be the University of Minnesota’s official colors, but PINK is now becoming a more prominent one. PINK has been popping up at various college campuses for several years, but it finally made its debut at the U in the fall. Each campus has two representatives and a street team composed of four to six volunteers, and Haley Egle and Coral Bierman are the U’s Victoria’s Secret PINK Campus Reps. Although the street team is unpaid, Egle and Bierman both agree they could not do this job without them. Egle and Bierman both stumbled upon the job accidentally. Being self-proclaimed shopaholics, they found the position on PINK Nation website. They sent in their resumes, not knowing what to expect, and soon after they interviewed, received notice that they would be the first ever PINK Campus Reps at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities.

The PINK program prides itself on being able to cater to all students; therefore they hold events all around campus.

Every week, Egle and Bierman set up a table somewhere on campus to raise brand awareness, give out free PINK gifts, and talk to various students around campus. Utilizing Facebook, the reps held a competition where various sororities submitted pictures, and the picture that got the most likes and shares won a party. At this party, the reps had an ice cream sundae bar, a photo booth, nail polish, and of course, bras and panties. “The party was super fun and was a big success,” Egle said. The PINK program prides itself on being able to cater to all students; therefore they hold events all around campus. Another one of these awesome events are Freebie Fridays.

These coveted free products include lip-gloss, leggings, bras, panties, and sweatshirts. Bierman said, “Some girls are skeptical that the products we are giving away are free because of how nice they are.” The campus rep position is great for anyone looking for experience in marketing, event planning, public relations, and more. Egle and Bierman both love being Campus Reps for PINK, and applying is so easy. Go to the PINK Nation website and send in your resume. If PINK is interested, you will be contacted for a Skype interview, and they will let you know if you’re a good fit soon after that. Don’t be afraid to go for it and apply! Maybe you’ll get the chance to fly to PINK Headquarters like Egle and Bierman did over the summer, and be a trained Campus Rep by the time school starts again in the fall.

TRENDY & TRIBAL Two Minneapolis college students are combining fashion and tradition to make unique accessories.. By Max Hawksford

S

eth Ayree and Ayi Doumassy were asked by a friend to create an African style hairpiece. The two MCTC students saw it as an opportunity to bring their passion for fashion into reality, so they started the Minneapolis-based accessories company, Aman. Aman began as a place for women’s accessories made out of traditional African fabrics, and for the past two years, the company has seen amazing growth. In addition to the use of African fabrics, European styles and leather accessories have spilled into their collection.

“We work with each customer individually, so that they get exactly what they want and our prices are very inexpensive.”

“We are a local business, full of city pride, Doumassy said. “We work with each customer individually, so that they get exactly what they want and our prices are very inexpensive.” All of the accessories are priced at around $10, which is quite the bargain. “One of our recently popular items is the beaded bracelets that are strung of small beautiful rocks and beads,” Doumassy said during our interview, where he sported one of these bracelets. He also added that Minneapolis has so many local businesses for women, but for men, the city is lacking, so that’s where their main focus is right now. Currently, Aryee and Doumassy have been working on a new product- handmade bow ties. These bow ties are made of African fabric in an assortment of rich colors. Seth and Ayi are currently working on building a webstie and Facebook page, but they can be found on their blog and on Instagram (@Samedi_Samedi). If you want to purcahse an item or have any questions, feel free to give them a call (612.986.4798) or shoot them an email (sethayree1@ gmail.com). They will work with you to find that perfect piece you’re looking for.

MARNI

Last Spring, we saw the flair of Dutch artist Rop van Mierlo’s mottled animal prints adorning Marni’s “Saturday Morning” collection of boxy tops paired with feminine circle skirts. Marni is an Italian label founded by chief designer Consuelo Castiglioni in 1994 that endures with its unconventional European air. Fast-forward to the current season, and Marni’s “Saturday Morning” collaborations continue with Katja Schwalenberg’s graphic design and illustrative élan. The continuation with Schwalenberg x Marni showcases linocut prints of over-sized polka dots and reinterpretations of the classic florals on jersey tees and leather clutches key to the season.

ARTISTIC AESTHETIC IN A DESIGNER’S WORLD

An artistic verve is taking SS14 runways by storm. By Kelsey Schawlbach

F

ashion design and art are endlessly intertwined, and when a designer’s mind pairs up with an artist’s panache, the opportunities are boundless and creativity thrives. Designers have been pairing up with artists for years from Salvador Dali and Elisa Schiaparelli to Andy Warhol and Yves Saint Laurent, collaborating for various campaigns, collections, showrooms and more. The relationship established through the combined genius of an artist and a designer is becoming a sought-after fashion remedy on global runways, with labels putting out bigger and better collections each season. Keep a watchful eye on SS14 runways for collaborations from Marni, Louis Vuitton, and Pretty Ballerinas.

LOUIS VUITTON

For years, a strong contender in the artist-designer collaboration field has been Louis Vuitton. SS14 follows in suit with Louis Vuitton’s textile project, with artists André of Paris, Kenny Scharf of the US, and INTI of Chile joining to create a visual tour of the international street art scene.

PRETTY BALLERINAS

Making waves in the shoe department is, most interestingly, a crazy-cool blogger out of London with volatile style and a penchant for the senseless doodles that made her famous. Bip Ling’s crude cartoon character, Mooch, is breaking out with its own line of pumps for Pretty Ballerinas, an inimitable European shoe line launched in 2005. The day-to-night pumps are a series of quirky pointed-toe and rounded-ballerina shapes, complete with sequins, pastels, and the little guy, Mooch. With Bip Ling’s growing enterprise and massive following, this will not be the last of collaborations under toe for her idiosyncratic art.

The artists are jumping to revamp the label’s signature silky square scarves with the virtuosity of their personal street scenes. A favorite is Scharf’s take on contemporary culture, made up of a blurred collage of interstellar motifs and shadowed pop references. SUMMER 2014

COVEN COUTURE

American Horror Story is providing some scary style inspiration for the runway. By Max Hawksford

A

merican Horror Story, the hit TV series has just wrapped up its third season, and left us with an “unexpected fashion hit” according to Vogue Magazine. This drama-horror hit debuted in 2011 and each year since has told the tale of a new scary story, from a modern-day haunted house in Los Angeles to the Briarcliff Mental Institution in 1964. This season, Coven, follows the ladies of the Louisianan Boarding School for Witches. The school is run by the manipulative “Supreme”, Fiona Goode, played by Jessica Lange, who received a Golden Globe nomination for her performance. Every generation there is a new “Supreme” born, and the plot consists of revealing this highly desired position in the house in addition to the Coven’s struggle with the outside dangers of witch hunters and other rivalry witch houses. Each witch displays a distinct sense of style, from sharp and experienced to young and sexy, consisting of their only color of choice: black. Yet, they have been known to slip in an occasional gold lining on a purse or belt to polish off their look.

Each witch displays a distinct sense of style, from sharp and experienced to young and sexy, consisting of their only color of choice: black.

The clothing has become so popular that it even expanded into Fall Fashion Week in Paris. With their black buckled boots and black leather dresses, the runway models could have easily passed for a witch in the show. With several different American Horror Story inspired Halloween costumes and simple accessories, you too can look like one of these fashionable divas. With the next season just around the corner,-be sure to watch for more fashion trends, but beware, this addictive show will quickly get you hooked.

here’s a revolution stirring in Uptown, and the head of that revolution is Coup D’Etat. The atmosphere in Uptown’s newest restaurant is something that really needs to be experienced in person. The custom bar in the center of the restaurant greets you with a rustic, yet stylish appeal that is art in itself. Chandeliers and lanterns fall from the ceiling to create the perfect mood lighting. Murals, trendy artwork, and mirrored walls add the perfect final touches to the already inspiring decor. It’s a flawless blend between local artisanship and high-end designs.

For those with a more reserved palette, the gnocchi is a crowd favorite. The drink menu is equally as impressive. From classic cocktails like the Parlour Old Fashioned to easy drinking cocktails like Every Rosé Has Its Thorn, there is something for everyone. What makes Coup D’Etat stand out from a strong line-up of Uptown restaurants is their team of chefs and innovators who pride themselves on collaborating and delivering the highest standards. A

s college students, we are always looking for good places to eat and enjoy a summer evening out with friends. Luckily, the Twin Cities offers a variety of restaurants from upscale dining to hole-in-the-wall gems to do the trick. The best burgers are waiting for you in Twin Cities!

1

If you are a fanatic over the Jucy Lucy-style burger, then MATT’S BAR AND GRILL is your place. Putting their own special twist on the hamburger, Matt’s own special Jucy Lucy is made with highest quality of beef that is filled with hot cheese you can only find at Matt’s. Matt’s has been featured on the Travel Channel’s show Man Vs. Food as well as Food Wars. Now a Minneapolis landmark, Matt’s Bar and Grill is here to stay.

BURGER PRICE: $3.25 - $6.25

2

Simplicity has never tasted so good. 112 EATERY takes a minimalist approach towards their burger. Though small in size, the 112 burger packs a big punch that will keep you satisfied. Instead of a traditional bun, 112 Eatery has the option to surround your burger with an English muffin, which adds a delicious twist to your dining experience.

BURGER PRICE: $10.00

3

The phrase “burger joint” was coined specifically for restaurants like CASPER AND RUNYON’S NOOK. Better known as just “The Nook” by frequent customers, their strong menu does not disappoint nor neglect the amount of choices for burgers. The Juicy Nookie is the Nook’s own special version of the Jucy Lucy styled burger; packed with enough cheese that will run onto your fries. The Nook is the perfect spot to sit down and eat with a group of friends or grab something on the go.

BURGER PRICE: $6.50 - $11.95

4. MONTE CARLO

219 3rd Ave N, Minneapolis

5. VINCENT: A RESTAURANT 1100 Nicollet Mall, Minneapolis

4

If you’re looking for a solid burger without all the bells and whistles the classic big American style burger is respected at MONTE CARLO and is large enough in size to satisfy your burger needs. Considered by Minneapolis to have one of the best outdoor patios, Monte Carlo is a cannot miss restaurant for a burger and some fries, so grab a table outside and enjoy the summer weather and a great tasting burger.

BURGER PRICE: $11.95 - $13.95

5

For many of us, summertime means a lot of shopping (or window-shopping) and what better place to be other than on the Nicollet Mall in downtown Minneapolis. If you happen to get hungry, no worries because VINCENT: A RESTAURANT is a tasty place to grab a burger that will tide you over for a while. As for burgers, there is not that many to choose from on their menu since they only have one; but that’s all you need when a burger is made that flawlessly. Not like the traditional burger, Vincent’s burger patties are made with shreds of braised ribs along with smoked Gouda. All in all, Vincent’s produces the burger and is a place that you might want to keep all to yourself.

BURGER PRICE: $14.50 - $15.50

As featured in Vera Wang’s New York Fashion Week runway show, modern French manicures are in for summer 2014. Create this look by adding a diagonal silver or black tip to your nails.

LOW PONYTAIL

According to Glamour Magazine, the low ponytail is the go-to ponytail for summer 2014. Instead of having your hair completely slicked back, try this trick to have a more youthful look with wispy strands. Move your low pony back and forth before securing it to ensure a loose style that won’t lose its shape.

TEXTURED HAIR

As seen in Marc-by-Marc Jacobs, Topshop, and Mulberry runway shows, slept-in locks are the next big look for summer. They are rougher than mermaid beach waves, and give off a textured look. According to Cosmo’s Peter Gray, he recommends to “try rinsing your hair with water and using just a conditioner, rather than shampooing every day. This will give your hair texture without grease.”

GO BRIGHT FOR SUMMER

BEAUTY

Be brave this summer by adding some vibrant color to your makeup. By Sarah Whillock

S

ummer is the time of the year when we pull out the bright, tropical colors to finally celebrate the warmer temperatures. Playing with summer colors can be intimidating, but it’s really a fun way to freshen up your look. The key to avoiding rocking summer brights is to pick one feature to highlight and to keep the rest of your look in a neutral color palette. Keep reading if you’re looking for some fun ways to incorporate tropical colors in your summer looks!!

COLORFUL CAT EYE

A fun twist on the traditional winged eyeliner look. Using a black liquid eyeliner of your choice, draw in your favorite shape of winged liner, and make sure to keep it very thin. Using a bright colored liquid eyeliner, trace the top of the black liner to add a subtle flash of color.

TANGERINE LIPS

One of the biggest trends this summer is bright orange lips. To achieve this look, dab an orange lipstick onto the center of your lips and rub them together. You can wear a matching gloss over the lipstick to intensify the color, or you can go without it to achieve a subtler look.

BRIGHT EYES

Another way to rock colors in the summertime is to add a pop of pastel, gold, or silver shadow to the inner corner of your eyes. This trick makes your eyes look brighter and enhances your natural eye color. IMAGES COURTESY OF SYDNEY ROGERS

HOT CROSSED BUN

Throw your braiding and bun-making skills together to keep your hair up and out of the way on the hottest days of summer! First, pull two sections at the sides of your face away from the rest of your hair. Tie the remainder into a bun. Using the two sections you pulled from your hair, braid into two separate braids. Cross each braid over your hair, above and around the bun, and pin in place. You’ll look chic and comfortable in a snap!

BOHO ROPE TWIST BRAID Turn a bad hair day into a stylish braid with just a few easy steps. Start with a piece of hair at the top of your head, and split in two. Wrap these two pieces around each other, adding pieces of your hair as you move towards the back of you head. Once you reach the back of your head, twist the remainder of your hair towards your face, separately, before combining the two strands in a twist, moving towards your face. Tie at the end with an elastic and you’re good to go!

SKIN CARE MADE EASY

Basic tips every girl should know for flawless skin.

A

dmittedly, skin care can seem daunting. With hundreds of products on the market, varied procedures, and the challenge of finding what suits your specific skin type, it can be difficult to establish a routine. Dr. Jaime Davis of Uptown Dermatology and SkinSpa shed some light on this situation by providing the basic tips and tools of the trade suitable for all skin types that will make taking care of your skin a little less intimidating. -Emily Schaefer

IMAGE COURTESY OF JOSE RAOUL TEEHANKEE

When it comes to specific products, Davis recommends the Neutrogena line. Davis says their products are affordable and effective, especially their cleansers. Additionally, Davis mentioned that the Neutrogena line understands that different skin types have different needs, and they account for this with a variety of products targeted to different skin types and/or problems.

1

PUT ON SUNSCREEN

WASH TWICE A DAY

MOISTURIZE

The first tip, and according to Davis, the most important, tip is to put on sunscreen; (and not just when you’re hitting the beach). In order to protect the skin and to promote long term health, Davis recommends putting on at least SPF 30 every day on your face, neck, the back of your hands, and your forearms.

Her second tip is to wash your face twice a day with a foaming cleanser. After washing in the morning, you should apply sunscreen, and after washing in the evening, swap the sunscreen out for a non-comedogenic (it will say on the bottle) moisturizer. She also says that washing the face immediately after exercise will help your complexion stay clear.

This last step may seem counterintuitive to some, but it is the oil in your face that causes acne, not moisturizers. To fight acne, Davis recommends using products with benzoyl-peroxide (check the label) in addition to being non-comedogenic.

T

he key to being fit this summer is not about over-exercising, counting calories, or attempting to look unnaturally thin, it’s about starting a healthy routine, and maintaining that routine in order to stay healthy for your entire life. The most attractive women are those who exercise regularly, do a combination of cardio and strength exercises, and eat three healthy, quality meals each day. Crash dieting and over-exercising will get you nowhere; it will slow down your metabolism, and will actually make you gain weight in the long run. According to Dr. Jeffrey Dick of Twin Cities Orthopedics, there are three parts to maintaining a healthy body; exercising regularly, eating healthy, and getting adequate sleep. Sticking to these guidelines will help you stay in shape. Dr. Dick notes that the most effective way to stay fit is to alternate between cardio and strength training, to cross-train in order to not wear down your body, and to take one to two breaks per week in order to let your muscles repair themselves. According to the Mayo Clinic, aerobic exercise is the most important part of your workout routine because this is the exercise that gets your heart rate up. It allows you to breathe deeper, and allows more oxygen to be available in your blood. Strength training is also very important, but many girls don’t do any form of lifting because they’re afraid they’ll get “manly muscles”. However, scientifically this isn’t even possible because females don’t have the high levels of testosterone that allows this to happen. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention also notes that strength training not only helps to create a more athletic body, but it can also have an immense impact on emotional and mental health. Sustaining healthy eating habits is also important for living a healthy lifestyle. The American Heart Association notes that it’s a common misconception that all healthy foods are unappetizing and a pain to eat. This is definitely not the case since there are tons of ways to enjoy eating healthy, and plenty of recipes to make eating healthy much more enjoyable. According to Dr. Dick, while exercising regularly, it is necessary to get consume of carbohydrates, proteins, calcium and vitamin C. Healthy carbs include whole grains, for example, brown rice, spinach or whole grain pasta. These foods will give you maximum energy and will provide fuel for working out. Healthy protein is also essential while strength training and some options include kidney beans and pinto beans, as well as nuts. Animal products also provide protein, however eating too much animal fat can cause high cholesterol. Lastly, sleep is an essential part of living a healthy lifestyle. Sleep is the time when our bodies repair themselves, and it is definitely necessary for maintaining a healthy body for the rest of your life.

The Spotless Solution:Three Easy Steps to Glowing Skin Dietician Teri Rose gives three important tips to keep your skin clear and healthy throughout the summer months.

I

n the summer, we tend to forget that the combination of sunscreen, sweat, and unhealthy snacks can have a toxic effect on our skin. It’s hard not to go outside and experience the warmth of summer, and it’s also hard to eat healthy during this time. Having healthy skin in the summer is easier said than done. That’s why licensed nutritionist Teri Rose from Perfectly Produce, a nutrition-based dietetics company, is here to help you get your skin glowing in no time. In an interview with Rose, she stated that, “the easiest way to think about healthy skin is healthy digestion plus healthy liver function equals great skin.” She also notes that overall, the best way to remember which foods to save and which to toss comes down to the three F’s: fiber, fluids, and full of color. When searching for fibrous foods in your local grocery store, keep an eye out for legumes, oat bran, and chia or flax seeds. These will help your digestive system while promoting healthy skin. Also make sure to drink enough water, since this is the best way to keep your body and your skin hydrated. However, if you’re bored of plain old H2O, Rose suggests trying green tea, ginger tea with turmeric (an anti-inflammatory), or plain kefir, which is found in fermented milk. Kefir will even give you the extra benefit of a being a pro-biotic. Lastly, brightening your refrigerator with pops of color will keep your skin glowing. Try raw beets in salads or smoothies, bright berries, watermelon, orange peppers, and carrots. Rose reminds us not to overlook the white foods, too. Onion, garlic, and cauliflower might not be your favorites, but they will also have your skin looking healthy and beautiful in no time. -Jessie Bekker

FITNESS FROM WITHIN NATALIE

MORGAN

ometimes it can be difficult to remember that working out shouldn’t be solely based on looking good but feeling good too. It was refreshing to catch up with two of my friends Natalie Coon and Morgan Grosulak, who are in the process of becoming fitness instructors here at the U and get their take on what fitness should be about. They work out not to become a supermodel, but to feel good and empower themselves through exercise. -By Meg Kelly

NATALIE is a freshman that is currently working on becoming certified to teach classes at the recreation center here on campus. She danced all throughout high school and has been active her entire life. After high school she stopped dancing but still wanted to stay active. Becoming a fitness instructor soon made its way onto her bucket list over winter break since she could envision herself leading classes. SINCE YOU ARE STILL IN THE PROCESS OF BECOMING AN INSTRUCTOR, WHAT KIND OF ENVIRONMENT DO YOU ENVISION YOURSELF CREATING FOR PEOPLE TAKING YOUR CLASS?

I would like to create a welcoming environment where participants can feel a sense of belonging and community. I think it would be awesome to be a role model to inspire others to become instructors or to encourage people to exercise who haven’t before.

HOW DO YOU KNOW WHAT TYPE OF WORKOUT IS RIGHT FOR YOU? Even if it is uncomfortable at first, you have to try it to see if it fits your style. You also need to realize that no one else is watching you when you work out. Since I have realized this, working out has become an outlet for “me time” in the sense that I am doing this for myself to become healthy and strong.

ANY TIPS FOR STAYING HEALTHY?

You need to be open to trying new things and most importantly, be realistic with your goals. It’s not all going to happen overnight, there are going to be times when you slip up. Keep the perspective that you are doing this for yourself and even if you don’t reach the goal you initially set just being active is still so good for you.

WHAT IS THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU’VE EVER RECEIVED? I love the quote “spread love wherever you go, let no one ever come to you without leaving happier.”

ANY ADVICE FOR ASPIRING FITNESS INSTRUCTORS? Just go for it! It can be scary to try new things but you will never know if it is for you until you try it. I have learned so much through the process. SUMMER 2014

FITNESS FROM WITHIN

MORGAN

NATALIE

The great part about yoga is it is a mental and a physical challenge. Most activities, whether it be going for a run or playing a sport require a strength element. Yoga provides the components for mental and physical strength.

HOW DO YOU KNOW WHAT TYPE OF WORKOUT IS RIGHT FOR YOU? Working out is about health. It’s about doing what is right for your body. I believe in experimenting and trying as many new things as possible. Taking one direction may feel wrong until you suddenly realize you’re in the exact place you’re meant to be. Choosing an activity should be something that’s enjoyable to you. Don’t torture yourself on a treadmill if you hate yourself when you get off. Maybe someday you’ll hop on a treadmill again and love it. Life comes in waves; it’s about catching the right one at the right time.

ANY TIPS FOR STAYING HEALTHY?

Take a minute or two every morning, before you get busy with life, to meditate. You don’t have to sit cross-legged on a yoga mat and hum. Just sit and be in the moment. Be thankful for the things you are given, the things you’re capable of, and the things you will do.

ANY ADVICE FOR ASPIRING YOGIS? IMAGES COURTESY OF SYDNEY ROGERS

MORGAN is a sophomore at the U who is in the process of

becoming certified to teach yoga sculpt classes at CorePower Yoga. She is pursuing a major in kinesiology. Exercise has always been apart of her life. She was a track and volleyball athlete throughout high school. The intense off-season training for both sports made fitness a habit and passion.

WHAT EXACTLY IS YOGA SCULPT?

Yoga sculpt is designed to be more challenging to the body and mind, it takes focus to fully dedicate yourself to your mat for the 60 minutes of class. It is strength based and includes weights and cardio along with vinyasa flow to keep your body safe and in check. It really brings you to a point where you can be in tune with your body, which is why I love it.

WOULD YOU RECOMMEND DOING YOGA ALONE OR COMBINED WITH ANOTHER FORM OF EXERCISE?

28

TRAX SUMMER 2014

Experiment. Don’t feel inadequate when you can’t twist yourself like a pretzel within a week. Don’t hate yourself for having to take seven breaks in your first Sculpt class. That is 100% okay because you’re getting better and you’re doing something that’s great for your body. Yoga is a sequential form of exercise. It takes time to condition your body.

hen asked to think of possible locations for an innovative beauty startup, Minnesota hardly comes to mind. However, Minneapolis-based Sigma Beauty goes against the grain in more ways than one. Firstly, Sigma Beauty emphasizes luxury products at affordable prices with quality as the brand’s primary focus. Secondly, since its humble beginnings the brand has become rapidly successful and has expanded well beyond the borders of Minnesota. Combine these with an innovative product line that has garnered international acclaim, and you’ll see that this promising brand is definitely worth your attention. Sigma started online in 2008 when founders Rene Xavier Filho and Simone Oliveira Xavier, a civil engineer and a researcher respectively, noticed a need in the beauty market for products that were both high quality and affordable. Using their combined knowledge of engineering and scientific research, the couple began creating products and sending them out to local members of the fashion community. After creating a fair amount of buzz and gaining a significant and worldwide customer base online, the brand expanded to well-known retailers such as Urban Outfitters and Amazon.com, and then to its own physical location in Minnesota at the Mall of America. This meteoric rise to fame came from the quality and unique characteristics of its products. SUMMER 2014

Since its start, Sigma has been continuing to keep with its motto of “keeping the world beautiful” with 55 different makeup brushes and an expanding collection of 171 makeup products. These products are rapidly becoming beauty must-haves. Most noticeably its best-selling brush, the F-80 Flat Kabuki, has been making a name for itself in the fashion industry with glowing reviews from top beauty authorities and customers themselves. The F-40 Large Angled Contour brush, E-55 Eye Shading brush, E-35 Tapered Blending brush, and F-30 Large Powder brush are also favorites and bestsellers among Sigma’s customer base. All of these brushes come in chrome, copper, or 18 K gold finishes and are known for controlled application and blending due to their innovative structures. Like the brand itself, Sigma’s product line is innovative and forward thinking. Currently, Sigma is fully embracing the eco-friendly beauty trend by offering two completely vegan brush sets and a set of eye shadows that are both gluten and talc free. All of Sigma’s eye shadows are also paraben free. Sigma’s product line is also unique in that the company is a crucial part of the development of its products. The brand specifically formulates its products rather than simply buying from offbrands like its competitors. Their most recent products include a spa glove that reshapes and clean brushes, a “dry n’ shape” that allows brushes to dry in 4-6 hours, and a set of six lip-glosses. Due to Sigma’s inventive line of products, the brand has been making a name for itself in Minnesota and throughout the rest of the world. Sigma opened a store at the Mall of America in 2012 that has been seeing a rapid rise in business over the past few months. Some customers even travel in from out of state or from different countries specifically to visit the store. Sigma’s upcoming expansion is just a hint of better things to come. The brand’s unique and swift rise to the top of the beauty industry from its formation just six years ago can be credited to an innovative and growing product line. A Morning at the B each

WHAT’S THE FIRST STEP IN CREATING A FRESH AND SIMPLE FACE?

An Afternoon Happy Hour

I do like a good eye shadow base; it really helps to set the colors. This is going to be the same 47 Dunes palette that we used before, but now we’re going use the colors a little different. This time I’m going to start with the darkest color over the bone structure. Then We’re going to use the pinkish coral on the eyelid. Just from that, it creates a little more drama.

WHAT’S THE FIRST STEP IN STARTING THIS LOOK? Primers are great when you have things to hide and smooth. This one is a CC Cream by Chanel ($55) that takes redness away and it has a great sunscreen too. You can put this on with your fingers. It comes in one color, but it has a smart pigment that adjusts to your skin tone within 30 seconds of application. Then I’m just going to use the satin matte foundation with a light blush along the cheekbone.

HOW DID YOU CREATE THE EYES?

34

TRAX SUMMER 2014

Cleaning and toning the face is going to secure that the makeup is going to look its best. Always the most important is taking good care of your skin so the pinks look so much better. It’s no different than any artwork. You want to make surfaces ready for the paint.

Then we’re going to use some eyeliner just along the lash line. Espresso is one of my favorite eyeliner colors to accent the eyes. I went in the water line along the bottom lash and right above the lash line. Then I like to take that same dark burgundy eye shadow with a detail brush and follow that setting of the eyeliner on the top lash. Then we like to take the light brown palette on the lower lash line. That just softens the lower line. Then I applied the mascara base and a mascara to complete the eyes and comb out the lashes with a plain brush to create a more natural lash.

WHAT WERE THE FINAL TOUCHES?

Add a pink coral lip for a bright afternoon look that’s ready to meet up with the girls for happy hour!

I started with a beautiful soft foundation; it’s a satin matte by Chanel. We put an even layer all over brushed on, but you can use your fingers as well. Then after that I used a little dusting powder and I also used a contouring powder in the sides under the cheeks and a nice soft pink blush on the cheekbones.

HOW DID YOU GET THOSE BEACHY CURLS?

For the eyes, I used an eye shadow base and I used the Chanel 47 Dunes ($59) quad palette. In the quad, I used the lightest color over the whole eyelid; on the bone structure, I used the pinkish coral color; then along the lash line I used a soft beige. I did not use the dark palette since it’s a morning look and we want to keep it fresh.

HOW DID YOU CREATE THE EYES?

After that I used two eyeliners. I used a gold liquid eyeliner by Lancôme (the Artliner by Lancôme is my favorite liquid eyeliner). I used the gold on the top lash; then I used a teal liner right next to it. I do like a little teal when I’m doing a beach look, not a lot though. Then I used a mascara base and regular mascara by Chanel. After it’s all dried, use a plain brush with no makeup to comb through the lashes to make sure they look natural. I combed through her brows as well, in her case we don’t need a brow pencil, she has a perfect brow.

WHAT WERE THE FINAL TOUCHES?

For the final touch for the lipstick, I used shade 125 Indécise by Chanel ($35) and a nice bright pink lip-gloss by NARS.

For the hair we just used a curling iron to create soft curls. Hold the strand in the curler for about 30 seconds and let it fall. Then just tousle it through with your fingers. Do a light under backcomb around the crown area only. You can use your favorite moisturizer or serum to hold the look.

This is a look you can easily do yourself! It would only take about 15 minutes to do at home.

When I’m doing someone’s makeup, my goal is to make the world see what a beautifully sculpted person they are. I don’t want to hide anything. - Pamela Brown

HOW DID YOU CREATE THE HALF-WAY UP-DO? over the spot where you pinned the braid. Leave the end of the What’s really been the trend this season is tousled up dos, or slightly messy up dos that have strands pulled away. Start by taking a small section of hair about 2 inches thick above the ear and do a loose braid. (Slightly wet hair would work better for this look.) Bring the braid lightly across the back of the hair and pin behind the opposite ear. With the rest of the hair, backcomb slightly to give it more volume, but be careful not to hit the braid! Gather the hair into a loose spiral bun and pin

bun loose for a casual tousled look or bring it in to look more polished. Spray with hairspray to hold the look.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO ACHIEVE THIS LOOK AT HOME?

This look is a little more complicated and could probably take up to 30 or 40 minutes for both face and hair.

Art just doesn’t happen overnight. Sometimes you have to stand back now and again and look at it. - Pamela Brown

Girls’ Night Out WHAT’S THE FIRST STEP IN STARTING THIS LOOK? We’re using 30 beige velvet matte foundation from Chanel ($45). It looks flawless on her skin. I also use the matching powder to set the foundation. Add a bright coral pink blush along the cheekbones for a bold, night look.

HOW CAN YOU APPLY FAKE EYELASHES AT HOME? Use a magnifying mirror; it’s so much easier! Trim the lashes before you put them on, if you’re going to clip do it from the outer corner not the inner corner. I use a tweezers to put the glue on the lash; you don’t want to squeeze too much glue out. Tilt your chin back and lift the eyebrow up to give your eyelid a taunt base. Put the lash in the middle first and then smooth out the edges and hold until you can’t see the glue anymore. (Humidity can determine how fast your eyelash glue dries.) You can always add a little more glue to seal loose ends. I always still use mascara too because it adheres the two lashes together and becomes more realistic. I know some people like to put the eye shadow on first and then do the eyelashes, but sometimes the eyelashes won’t stick to all that eye makeup. If your eyelashes aren’t sticking you may need to get the skin clean use a cotton swab with a little rubbing alcohol, but don’t get it in your eyes or it will sting!

HOW DID YOU CREATE THE EYES? As always, start with an eye shadow base first. I don’t like to use just one or two colors for a smoky eyelid. I like to mix natural colors with intense colors to take the sharpness away. It softens the look; it really changes everything.

I used a white silver eye shadow, 81 Fantasme by Chanel ($38), on the eyelids in a thin layer to start the look. Since blue is so popular, I added a little bit of light, smoky blue into the corners and the bone structure, and a dark blue into base of the eyelids using the 41 Fascination palette quad by Chanel ($59). Bring in a medium neutral shadow to blend in the bone structure and create a natural blush to the eye. Add a soft layer of the silver eye shadow into the inner lid to really add sparkle and highlight the look. Depending on your skin tone, add a cream bronzer or concealer to the brow line to clean up the look and draws out the natural drama.

Color is fun, so for a bold eyeliner I went with a bright cobalt blue liner along the lash line for a final pop! To balance out the under lashes, incorporate a little dark blue eye shadow with a detail brush along the lash line and add a little bit of silver towards the inner water line.

WHAT ARE YOUR TIPS FOR CREATING A SMOKY EYE?

Start by shaping the eye. Use a skin or blush tone to shape out your eye’s bone structure and then from there, build out your smoky colors. A lot of people do too much at first, and end up with a smoky mess under their eyes. It’s better to start soft and build up than try to fix mistakes with a Q-tip later. And blend; really blend!

WHAT WERE THE FINAL TOUCHES? People always think you can’t do a bold lip color with a smoky eye, but you just need to do a clean lip. You can do bright, you can do bold, you can do nude just make sure the edges are clean and well blended.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO ACHIEVE THIS LOOK AT HOME?

A smoky eye can be tricky to achieve, but with practice comes perfect! If you follow Pam’s tips for building up the look, it should only take you about 30 minutes to complete the look!
