Advanced Studio: Architecture of Identities

Page 1

THESIS: Architecture has the capacity to respond to and reflect the desires of the people who engage it, not only in the program it can contain, but also, and perhaps more powerfully, through the form it takes. Following a period of social rupture, the past inheritance and future promise of a people generate a dynamic tension between the desire for the stability of tradition and the hope of change. By both reminding a people of the past and articulating a vision of the future, architectural form can engage this tension, responding to, reflecting upon, and perhaps indicating a resolution to these competing desires. Architectural form achieves this simultaneous protection and liberation of a people’s desires through the use of scale, material, and sectional change.
