FITUR 2012 a Must-Attend Exhibition in Spain

Designs new initiatives aimed at optimizing networking and generating business opportunities.

T

he 32nd edition of FITUR, the Inter-national Tourism Trade Fair, will be held January 18–22, 2012. The event, organized by IFEMA, aims to spotlight its capacity as a meeting point for the sector and a platform generating business opportunities for all participants. To this end, among other opportunities, for the first time FITUR will host a forum which, organized in conjunction with the U.N. World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), seeks to bolster commercial alliances between exhibitors, with special attention to the region of the Americas. The meeting will promote B2B commercial interaction between the exhibitors of the 166 countries and regions represented at the Fair, with both public and private entities from North, Central and South America, especially with those from Latin America, which are extraordinary well represented at FITUR and for which the Fair is an indispensable and landmark forum. This initiative was presented to the main representatives of the tourism industry in the Americas last May at the UNWTO for the Americas Commission Meeting celebrated in Asunción, Paraguay.

Meeting point for business FITUR’s role as a business center is also advanced through the second holding of its FITUR Workshop. This is a meeting point also based on B2B meetings between exhibitors and “hosted buyers” (international invitee buyers) at which, based

ITB BERLIN TO SHOWCASE WORLDWIDE INDUSTRY TRENDS IN MARCH According to the latest survey of the World Travel Monitor, commissioned by ITB Berlin, over the last five years there has been a double-digit increase in sporting holidays among European tourists, which has even overtaken cruises, which five years ago ranked ahead of sporting holidays. Germans in particular are keenest on sports, and account for 42 percent of the nine million sporting holidays taken by Europeans abroad. At 14 percent, the Dutch rank second. In other European markets sporting holidays make up only six percent or less. Among sporting holidaymakers the most popular destination is Austria, which among Europeans attracts 24 percent of the market, followed by Italy and Germany, accounting for 11 percent each. During the last five years Germans also preferred Austria for testing their sporting limits. At 42 percent Austria ranks ahead of Italy (18 percent) and Switzerland (14 percent). Most popular among European sporting holidaymakers are hiking (38 percent) and cycling tours (23 percent). They are followed in third by motor sports (car, motorcycle and motorboat racing) at 14 percent. At ten percent, golf ranks fourth in sporting pop4 •OCTOBER 2011

At the 2011 edition, in just one morning 360 meetings took place between international buyers and exhibitors. The technical workshops will also serve to optimize the effectiveness of interactions between professionals, analyzing market characteristics and client profiles in order to allow them to obtain the best possible results from their actions. The last edition of FITUR attracted 10,434 companies from 166 countries and/or regions, and featured 209,260 participants between professionals and public.

Nine percent of German sporting holidaymakers prefer golf. What is striking is that sporting holidaymakers belong to the wealthier parts of society and as such are much targeted. European sporting holidaymakers average 43 years of age, and most live in households without children. More men than women are attracted to sports when they are on holiday. At 45 years of age, German sporting holidaymakers may be a little older than the European average, but in all other respects they are no different. ITB Berlin 2012 will take place Wednesday to Sunday, March 7–11. From Wednesday to Friday it’s open to trade visitors only. Parallel with the trade show, the ITB Berlin Convention, the largest travel industry event of its kind in the world, will be held March 7–9 (Wednesday to Friday), 2012. ITB Berlin is the global travel industry’s leading trade show. In 2011 a total of 11,163 companies from 188 countries displayed their products and services to 170,000 visitors, who included 110,791 trade visitors. Y YEARS EARS

AMAWATERWAYS RELEASES 2012 BROCHURE AmaWaterways’ new 128-page brochure for 2012 details extensive river cruise vacation itineraries, exciting new programs, specialty cruises and new vessels. “AmaWaterways celebrates its tenth anniversary in 2012, a year which will mark a number of important developments and milestones at the company. We will not only operate 12 custom-designed vessels, but will expand our itineraries, excursions and amenities to deliver the finest river cruises available,” says Rudi Schreiner, President. The brochure describes river cruise vacations on the Danube, Rhine, Main, Mosel and Rhone rivers. In 2012, the line will feature a total of nine custom-built vessels in Europe, all featuring French balconies or twin balconies, and amenities such as complimentary inroom Internet, ship-wide Wi-Fi and guided bicycle tours. Popular European itineraries commence with Tulip Time cruises on the waterways of the Netherlands and Belgium. The new 164-passenger twin balcony MS AmaCerto will make its debut departure in April, and in France in the spring the MS AmaDagio will mark the first time a luxurious AmaWaterways vessel will operate on the Rhone. The brochure also explains the Chaîne des Rôtisseurs distinction, the prestigious gastronomic society dating back to the Middle Ages. All AmaWaterways vessels in Europe are members, the only river cruise line to hold that honor. Cruise departures include a visit to the Floriade World Horticultural Expo, a special event every 10 years in the Netherlands. Also new are exclusive “Culinary Delights—Bites and Sights” shore excursions that explore the culinary heritage of Europe. The brochure includes an overview of the AmaWaterways 2012 specialty cruises, including “In Celebration of Wine” cruises on the Danube, Rhine—and for the first time—the Rhone River in France. Itineraries, dates and prices are set forth for the 2012 “Jewish Heritage” cruises as well. The line will offer its popular Russia, Vietnam and Cambodia itineraries under a new “AmaVoyages” product category separate and distinct from the AmaWaterways experience in Europe, but still of the highest caliber in the region. The brochure sets forth descriptions, dates and prices for the “Russian Waterways” program on the newly-redesigned MS AmaKatarina, and the “Vietnam, Cambodia and the Riches of the Mekong” program featuring Mekong River cruises on MS La Marguerite and brandnew MS AmaLotus. BIkETOURSDIRECT ADDS 4 CONTINENTS IN 2012 Based on its success with European bicycle tour offerings, U.S.based BikeToursDirect will add tours in at least 10 new countries on four continents for the 2012 season, including tours in New Zealand, South Africa, Vietnam, Thailand, Mexico and Jordan. Some “test” tours offered in 2011 that will continue and expand in 2012 include “South African Cycle Safari,” which travels along the Cape peninsula through private game reserves where cyclists can see lions, elephants, leopards, rhinos and other wildlife; bicycle tours in New Zealand, which explore rainforests, glaciers, mountains, islands and more; and four tours in Vietnam, including a twoweek bike and boat adventure that explores bustling cities and rural districts. Soon to be added: a Riviera Maya Bike Adventure in Mexico that takes cyclists across the Yucatan peninsula from the jungle to the Caribbean. Some of these new tours are offered yearround, providing greater flexibility for travel planning. Unlike many companies, BikeToursDirect doesn’t operate tours but instead represents overseas companies that can keep their tour prices down due to the lower cost of doing business close to home and to spreading expenses over a large client base. Clients book tours and make payments through BikeToursDirect, usually at the same prices charged by the tour companies. The full roster of new tours will be unveiled in November when BikeToursDirect launches a new website. Although 2012 information on existing tours won’t be added until then, BikeToursDirect already has details on many tours. SPECIAL INTEREST gREAT CANADIAN TRAVEL COMPANY WILL EXAMINE AFRICA’S HISTORY, CULTURE, POLITICS

Next spring, a special travel program will afford the inquisitive traveler a chance to visit and study the people, history and traditions of East Africa. A 14-day program entitled “Africa—Its History, Culture and Politics” will be offered by The Great Canadian Travel Company from May 30 until June 12. The itinerary will visit Rwanda, Tanzania and the island of Zanzibar, for centuries the center of the Arab ivory, spice and slave trade. The program, priced at $2,448 plus taxes, will include 11 nights’ accommodations including breakfast and some meals, local tours, meetings, lectures and receptions. Airfares within Africa are an additional $750, and the roundtrip international airfare to Africa will be determined by the departure cities in North America. Extensions in Africa and European stopovers can also be arranged. The program will offer an engaging mix of excursions and education programs. It begins in Kigali, the capital of Rwanda, with touring and visiting local villages, and a reception to meet local university and government people. In Tanzania’s Arusha, the group will experience differences stemming from its mixed past of rivalry between Portuguese and Arab traders, control by the Germans and then Britain, and finally independence in 1961. Tourists will look at current aid projects and discuss benefits and drawbacks of Tanzania’s aid-based economy. After that it’s on to Zanzibar’s historic richness that left its mark. Arab traders arrived in the 8th century, sailing with the monsoon winds to trade in ivory, slaves and spices. Later the Persians came, the Indian traders who arrived as shopkeepers, traders, skilled artisans and professionals, and the British, involved in missionary and trading in East Africa. A tour is made to Stone Town, a UNESCO Heritage Site, former capital of the Zanzibar Sultanate and the flourishing center of the spice and slave trades in the 18th century. There will be a vehicle tour of the island, spice plantations and Prison Island, and there will be meetings with officials to discuss economic and social development. The group flies to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania’s bustling capital and major port. Guests will visit a local village and tour the National Museum and Botanical Gardens. There will also be meetings with diplomatic and political leaders to discuss the group’s experiences in Africa and the directions and issues that lie with Africa’s development. Throughout December, various dance and music shows for all generations will take place in Zagreb’s main square. In addition to the cultural program and entertainment lineup, there will be entertainment for children with various themes, as well as Advent-themed evenings. Restaurateurs are well prepared. This year holiday staples will be complimented by some popular original delicacies including the famous trukle (cheese-filled pastry). There will also be presentations and tastings of other authentic Croatian foods—Dalmatian prosciutto and Slavonian kulen (a spicy dry-cured sausage), for example. Presentations will be accompanied by cultural events and performances by folklore groups from all over Croatia. Zagreb’s guests will be able to enjoy numerous concerts, theater performances, exhibitions and various other festive happenings and events. On New Year’s Eve, the legendary New Gypsies will play in Zagreb. This band was started by Chico Bouchikhi, a founder of the French band Gipsy Kings. New Gypsies tend to follow the tradition of gypsy music performed by Gipsy Kings. Thus they play various genres like flamenco, pop and traditional folk songs with the same zest as their musical role models. The members of New Gypsies are Chico’s three sons, his daughter and three sons of Nicolas Reyes, the band’s cofounder. At their New Year’s Eve concert in Zagreb, they will perform as a nine-member guitar band, accompanied by worldfamous flamenco dancer Sonia Bouchikhi. The passion for playing music is the result of immersion in gypsy music from birth. New Gypsies are the only legal heirs of the legendary Gipsy Kings, and hence they perform their full musical repertoire along with their own songs. In the interpretation of Gipsy Kings’ music, immense pride is felt and the energy of rumba Catalana is conveyed, offering the audience a memorable Gipsy Fiesta. New Gypsies have performed all over the world at all major festivals of popular and folk music. They play numerous solo concerts in concert halls and bars, in accordance with Roman tradition. They have performed with world–class musicians such as Placido Domingo, at an extraordinary show in Quatar. Zagreb Tourist Board, www.zagreb-touristinfo.hr

HOSPITALITY REACHES EXTRAORDINARY LEVELS AT gRANDHOTEL LIENZ IN AUSTRIA A few hours’ journey from Vienna, Grandhotel Lienz is tucked away in a prime location for mountain sports aficionados. Lienz is a small town in southern Austria, located in a valley between the Grossglockner (one of the highest peaks in the Alps) and the Dolomites. With a 13th-century castle and ancient and well-preserved churches, the city has much to attract those seeking a wellrounded vacation in the Alpines. Luxury 5-star Grandhotel Lienz is the brainchild of Heinz Simonitsch, who retired to his home country after a brilliant 39year career in the Caribbean, where he transformed Jamaica’s Half Moon from a faltering property into a world-class resort. The Austrian city soon after challenged Simonitsch to develop another world-class property, and Grandhotel Lienz was born in 2009 after expert planning and years of construction. Here, luxury, service and hospitality reach new levels. When owners of a legendary Italian sports car decided to hold their annual convention at the hotel, the angle of the garage entrance ramp was reworked to accommodate low-to-the-ground chassis. 16 • OCTOBER 2011

The building’s intelligent layout ensures that guests in their bathrobes can access the spa or wellness center without traversing any of the common areas. They also get their own reserved tables in the dining room and their own numbered parking spaces. A heated indoor/outdoor swimming pool overlooks the river and mountains. Describing her visit, Josette King of Simon & Baker Travel Review confessed she was “actually delighted that the winter weather was uncharacteristically inclement” during her stay. “It gave me a guilt-free excuse to spend long hours each day enjoying the many pleasures of the spa,” she said, “then nestle in the oversize chaise by the wide glass doors of my sitting room to admire the surrounding alpine vistas.” In addition to the two-story spa’s treatment rooms, multiple saunas, steam room and serene relaxation lounge, the wellness center includes a unique and prized feature: a state-of-the-art medical facility that offers individual health consultations, preventive medicine and medical checkups. The property is solar-heated, has handicapped access, and accepts pets. Fall is the time when Berliners re-focus on the capital’s rich art scene and enjoy a packed program of events and openings. Here are some highlights: Berlin’s Classical Antiquities Collection is presenting Yadegar Asisi’s 360° panorama of Pergamon—Panorama of the Ancient City. The exhibition devoted exclusively to the ancient city of Pergamon will stage a photorealistic 72’ x 328’ simulation panorama, mounted inside a purpose-built rotunda in the courtyard of Berlin’s Pergamon Museum. The goal is to offer insight into the culture, architecture, and daily life of a Helleno-Roman city during antiquity. An archaeological exhibition of artifacts and excavations from Pergamon (present-day Bergama, Turkey) will complement the display. Masterpieces of Italian Renaissance portraiture are the focus of Renaissance Faces, a highly rated exhibition featuring 15th-century artists Leonardo da Vinci, Lippi, Botticelli and others. On display until November 20 at Museum Island’s Bode Museum, the exhibition features stories of beautiful women, merchants, courtiers. It also explores that era’s riches in an accompanying collection of paintings, medals, sketches and sculptures. Focusing on urban lifestyles and environments as the inspiration for unconventional and uncompromising art experiences, The Stroke.Artfair is gaining traction as the world’s first and only urban art fair. Staged at historic Postbahnhof October 14 –16, the fair features artists and galleries from around the world who put classic interpretations in the context of today’s streetscape with graffiti, tags, tattoos, advertising or graphic design.. Berlin’s famous landmarks will be illuminated by dazzling lights during the Festival of Lights October 12–23. The popular nightly light show is complemented by art and cultural events, and special Lightseeing tours by bus, boat or Velotaxi making for memorable fall nights. Presenting a diverse program of traditional as well as progressive jazz, big band and large ensembles, Jazzfest Berlin (November 2–6, different locations) features international talent from American jazz stars to artists crossing the lines between local folk traditions and global sounds. The festival will put a spotlight on Poland’s Mikolaj Traszka Clarinet Quartet and Atom String Quartet. Homage will be paid to the composers Krysztof Komeda (for Roman Polanski) and Italy’s Nino Rota (a.o. for Federico Fellini). REYkJAVIk, ICELAND, NAMED UNESCO ‘CITY OF LITERATURE’ Iceland’s capital of Reykjavik has just upped its cultural cache with a new title, “City of Literature,” designated by the UNESCO World Heritage Organization as part of the Creative Cities Network. The project “Reykjavik City of Literature” was officially launched at the Reykjavik International Literary Festival in September. It’s part of an effort to enhance literary life in the city, including establishing a Center for Literature. The UNESCO designation will also be promoted internationally at the Frankfurt Book Fair October 12–16, where Iceland is the Guest of Honor. Travel World News • www.travelworldnews.com

Reykjavik boasts an outstanding literary history with its invaluable heritage of ancient medieval literature, the Sagas, the Edda and the Íslendingabók (Book of Icelanders), an historical work dealing with early Icelandic history. This longstanding literary tradition plays a central role within the city’s modern urban landscape with a strong presence of writers, poets and children’s book authors. It’s no small wonder Reykjavik has been given the distinction of UNESCO “City of Literature” considering these interesting literary facts: Icelandic is the oldest living language in Europe. Modern Icelanders are still able to read the 1,000-year-old sagas written by the Vikings on display at The Culture House in Reykjavik. To preserve the Icelandic language, the country has a special government agency that creates new Icelandic words instead of taking on foreign words, as is often the practice with technological terms. Icelanders are among the most literate people on earth—99% of residents age 15 and over can read and write. Iceland has one Nobel Laureate, Halldor Laxness, who won the Nobel Prize in literature in 1955. Icelanders publish more books and newspapers per capita than any other country. In addition to the new UNESCO designation, Iceland has two other UNESCO World Heritage Sites—Thingvellir National Park, site of Iceland’s first parliament, and the volcanic island of Surtsey, also known as “The Youngest Place on Earth.” A free travel guide to visiting Iceland is downloadable on their tourism website. The Reef resort added four loggerhead turtle nests to its’ extended family this summer. In the past few months The Reef has worked closely with Cayman’s Department of Environment to ensure the safe hatching of the nests, and all were successfully sent off. “I love seeing the baby turtles make their way to the water and start their journey in life, so focused on one thing—getting to the water,” said Suzy Marfleet, concierge. “Knowing that one day the females will return here to lay their own eggs, I feel like we are a part of the cycle of life and doing our bit to preserve these beautiful creatures.” When a turtle nest is found at The Reef, it is reported to the Department Of Environment and marked with caution tape and signs explaining the importance of keeping the nests undisturbed. The Reef staff and guests are alerted 48 hours prior to when the nest is expected to hatch. Since turtles use moonlight as their guide to the sea, guests are asked to keep porch lights off so the turtles don’t mistake the human lighting for the moon. Rarely seen, a nest hatched during daylight this year. This gave guests and staff a unique opportunity to capture the process on film without damaging the turtles’ eyes with flash photography. When the nest hatched, The Reef staff reacted by placing them in a bucket with damp sand and keeping them in a cool dry place. They were kept there until dusk to keep them safe from predators on their way out to sea. The Reef prides itself on being a safe home for nests. The Reef is the only resort on Grand Cayman with all beachfront rooms, and one of the few on the island to offer all-inclusive options. Located on the secluded East End of Grand Cayman, the family-run Reef Resort has 1,600 feet of white sand beach for 152 condo-style rooms. The full-service resort features two restaurants, a spa, two freshwater pools, snorkeling and scuba diving, along with many on site water sport activities from White Sand Water Sports. the reef, 888-232-0541, reservations@thereef.com, www.thereef.com www.travelworldnews.com • Travel World News

austin-Lehman adventures will host cultural/educational adventures to Cuba beginning in early 2012. With license in hand from the U.S. Department of the Treasury, Office of Foreign affairs, aLa’s programs will promote cross-cultural, people-to-people contact through licensed guided tours in Cuba in a style similar to its other culturally immersive international programs, according to Dan austin, Founder and Director. One 10-day tour itinerary with an undetermined number of scheduled departures will launch in early 2012. Custom/exclusive small group trips will also be offered. additional itineraries (requiring separate approval) are on the drawing board for the future, he said. austin said the formal permitting process began early in 2011 after nearly three years of research into the possibilities of conducting guided adventure tours in Cuba. “Because most americans have been prevented from visiting Cuba since the US embargo in the 1960s, we are extremely curious about our neighbor just 90 miles to the south of Key West, FL. Our license will allow us to finally lift the veil and rediscover this destination that’s been off-limits to americans the past 50 years,” said austin. Noted Latin american authority Christopher Baker, author of six books on Cuba, worked hand-in-hand with austin to create an itinerary exclusive to aLa. austin-Lehman adventures, www.austinlehman.com

‘snOrkeLer’s paradise’ adventure packaGe at sands at Grace Bay this faLL

Cabarete, on the north shore of the Dominican Republic, is one of the world’s premier destinations for windsurfing, kite surfing and regular surfing. Because of its world dominance in these sports, it attracts an international vacationing clientele from all over Europe, the United States and Canada. Consequently, a broad range of ethnic restaurants has evolved including Italian, German, French, Irish, Mexican, Thai, arab, Chinese and american. Dining in Cabarete is like dining in fine restaurants in cities around the world except it’s on a beach—which is better. The not-to-be-missed dining experience is Serenade Restaurant at Villa Taina, Cabarete’s boutique, beachside hotel. The lunch and dinner menu is primarily Italian. The head chef is Italian-born Luciano Merlino from Como in northern Italy. His herbs and spices are mostly from Italy, along with his pasta. Luciano uses only Florentine olive oil, “because,” he says, “it has the perfect balance of flavor and acidity so it comes through in the food, without overpowering.” He has eight pages of appetizers, seafood and meat entrees, desserts, sandwiches, snacks and pizza. Breakfast is a full-meal buffet included in the price of the stay at Villa Taina. For a light lunch, a guest can start with the chef’s uniquely prepared appetizer of Beef Tartare. He bakes 3-1/2-inch rounds of shredded Parmesan to a crispy texture and layers it with chopped sirloin and tops it with arugula. as he likes to say, “It is a serenade on the pallet.” It can be accompanied with soup from the menu, perhaps a non-Italian selection like Dominican-style pumpkin soup. For appetizers at a candlelight dinner, Luciano suggests his traditional French Escargot or the Tuna Carpaccio. He makes Gnocchi himself—with a choice of three sauces. alternatively, there’s Chicken Cordon Bleu, the Pasta with Sausage and Porcine Mushrooms, Penne arabbiata with a Spicy Tomato Sauce, or fresh, Caribbean Seafood Casserole. among the desserts is a Zuppa Inglesa. This is served in a tall cocktail glass with layers of Chantilly cream, chocolate mousse and pastry cream laced with cherry liquor. all this is served beachside in the Caribbean breezes. villa taina, info@villataina.com, www.villataina.com

“always something new” is how General Manager Steve Wright describes the continuing improvements at the Grand Case Beach Club, located on the ocean adjacent to St. Martin’s Grand Case Village, the culinary capital of the island. Following a major $2-million refurbishing and upgrading program completed earlier this year, new touches were added. These range from changing all inroom fabrics including curtains, to most outdoor furniture. New handrails and patio tiles are also included in the mix, which will be ready for the winter season. Wright works overtime to introduce major and minor touches that enhance a guest’s stay. That dedication, coupled with top-notch service and hospitality, is a major reason the resort sees one of the best repeat guest ratios in the Caribbean. Grand Case Beach Club has been cited for the fourth consecutive year by Insiders’ Select List, which represents only a small percentage of Expedia’s worldwide clientele. Others include Orbitz, which presented the resort with its “Best In Stay” award; apple Vacations’ “Golden apple;” Tripadvisors’ travelers’ comments; and Caribbean Travel & Life readers, who named it one of the best medium-size resorts in the Caribbean. The property features two beaches; swimming pool; water sports and fitness centers; tennis court; and the Boardwalk that wraps around the hill overlooking the ocean and connects to Sunset Cafe, open for breakfast, lunch, dinner and Happy Hour. esoamerica is chockfull of stunning archaeological sites, but Copan stands out from all the rest. Yes, temples, pyramids, and ball courts, but the spectacular stone monuments, those mesmerizing stelae with the visages of the Maya kings of over 1,500 years ago, seem to possess some strange powers even now. Welcome to the Paris of the Maya world! Situated in a small valley in the pine and oak-forested highlands of western Honduras, Copan is a 2.5 hour drive from steamy San Pedro Sula over serpentine well-paved roads. emerald green mountains, coffee, banana and pineapple plantations delight the eye. The climate here is surprisingly cool and green from November until February. The mean annual temperature is 78 F, and even on torrid days, a pine-scented breeze often sweeps down from the hillsides. Copan, the very heart of the ancient Maya of the Classic Period of A.D. 400 – 800, captures the imagination of all who venture here. This magnificent kingdom of the sun, the Copan Archaeological Park, was designated a World Heritage Site by UNeSCo in 1980. Travelers journey back in time as they marvel at the stelae of past dynastic rulers in all their enigmatic glory, the hieroglyphic staircase with thousands of glyphs, the ball court with its macaw iconography, the beautiful temples and plazas. Its citizens fight mainly for the environment. As the second most sought-after eco-destination next to the Amazon, the relatively small country in Central America treasures its prized and plentiful diversity—from rainforests and volcanic mountains, to plains and powdery beaches. Annually, these devout people mark their commitment during EcoWeek Costa Rica—a Celebration of the Environment and Culture of Costa Rica. This year, from August 13–19, activities began with the Green Living Fair in San Jose, where the general public enjoyed exhibits for 3 days on Green Living, Green Communities, Eco Travel, Medical Tourism, Cultural activities and entertainment. An exciting menu of nature, adventure, aquatic and health related programs was offered to the North American traveler as incentives to visit. Packages included Dixon Green Golf Celebrity Tournament, Yoga and Wellness Retreats, Acupuncture & Wellness. Green Living Fair, EcoPhoto Challenge, EcoSnorkel Treasure Hunt, and Kids EcoAdventures. All were available to travel agents and consumers, with generous commissions paid for bookings. In Guanacaste, known worldwide for its majestic Pacific Ocean vistas, the country’s first-ever Green Golf Tournament—the Dixon Golf and Hacienda Pinella—was held. This completely “green” contest on a course certified by Audubon using 100% biodegradable balls bowed to conservation in every respect. Over 300 trees were planted to make the event carbon offset. Social responsibility was observed too, by helping kids through two local charities—Aldeas SOS and Fundacion Guanacaste. Celebrities Robert Brooks, former NFL player with the Green Bay Packers, actor Josh Duhamel, as well as Black Eyed Peas’ stunning Fergie joined the crowd. EcoWeek Costa Rica turned out to be the largest organized ecotourism event ever to be produced for the green traveler, and a delightful opportunity to experience the country’s biodiversity and culture. Of the 12 parks that make up this prestigious list, Manuel Antonio was the only national park featured from Central America. Latin Trails’ Galapagos Islands kayaking is one of most exciting and adventurous experiences offered in the company’s cruise itineraries. From extending to more islands and locations to offering brand new kayaks to fit all passengers, Latin Trails has enhanced kayaking for visits to the Enchanted Islands. Besides hiking, snorkeling, beachcombing, and even optional diving, kayaking is a great way to discover the majesty of the Galapagos Islands. For this activity there are many locations where visitors can further explore unique flora and fauna. This is because there are many calm waterways that cut across small islets near the shore, little islands filled with exciting wildlife such as the Galapagos penguin, marine iguana or sea lion. Furthermore, as Galapagos waters are crystal clear, it’s even possible to observe the always bustlingly marine life below. Wildlife such as colorful schools of fish, stingrays, marine turtles and even small sharks can readily be seen. Latin Trails cruise itineraries are the best way to enjoy kayaking, due to the fact that it’s possible to do in all their 4- to 15-day departures, and because the quality of its kayaking is excellent. Latin Trails has already anticipated the 15-days itinerary shift that will become compulsory in 2012 and has used this opportunity to boost their services. As there will be longer time to enjoy each location due to fewer visitors being at one spot at the same time, one thing the company has done is add more, longer and exciting kayaking opportunities to their itineraries. For example, the Post Office Bay visit in Floreana Island will now include half an hour of kayaking to Baronesa lookout before arriving in the main island’s bay. In the Galapagos Odyssey boats, there will also be the opportunity to experience this add-on in a half-hour kayak ride from Bahia Bucanero to Puerto Egas. Kayaking is also available on request; whenever possible, even if the activity is not scheduled, Latin Trails’ crew can accommodate a client’s desires and set up this fun hobby for them. To ensure all visits are fun and safe, Latin Trails only uses kayaks in the best shape possible. Visitors who kayak are provided with safety vests and the professional crew always accompanies them either on the zodiac boats or on other kayaks. Latin Trails’ motto is safety, but fun for all as well. Expedition catamaran M/C Galapagos Journey I has two big kayaks on board at all times. In the first-class yacht Galapagos Odyssey and in the luxury yacht Galapagos Grand Odyssey, this goes even further as they now offer brand new inflatable kayaks that can accommodate all passengers, even the full departures. latin Trails, www.latintrails.com www.travelworldnews.com • Travel World News

Tours range from the 9-day Galapagos Islands and Ecuador to the 21-day The Very Best of South America, priced from $4,895 pp, land only. “APT’s Signature Experiences” include Argentina’s most exclusive tango show and dinner at Rojo Tango, an optional five-hour trek along the Inca Trail, an Orient-Express train journey on the Hiram Bingham from Machu Picchu to Cusco and a two-night stay at the Ritz-Carlton Santiago. 38 • OCTOBER 2011

Enchanted Expeditions, a leader in authentic Ecuadorian travel, combines world-class spas and healing hot springs while relaxing at glamorous hacienda accommodations. A five-day/four-night program priced at $2,368 ppdo includes all meals and accommodations (except in Quito), horseback riding and personal tours of, among others, the Andean Condor breeding center. “Most people come to Ecuador looking for adventure but we are now offering luxury trips that visit authentic Ecuadorian estates,” said Judy Carvalhal, founder of Enchanted Expeditions. “With this itinerary we hope to give discerning travelers a glimpse into Ecuador’s rich and colorful past while also celebrating today’s contemporary service, cuisine and comfort.” The tour begins at Cotopaxi National Park two hours south of Quito, home to the highest active volcano in the world, Cotopaxi (19,348 ft). It continues to the 15th-century San Agustin de Callo, a luxuriously furnished farmhouse built on the site of an important Inca palace that is one of the two most important archaeological sites in Ecuador. Next day the journey moves to the northern province of Imbabura for two nights at Hacienda Zuleta, a 19-room, 4,000-acre working ranch in the Andes owned by the family of former Ecuadorian President Galo Plaza Lasso. Host Fernando Polanco takes visitors hiking to Condor Huasi where Andean Condors are being reintroduced into the wild. Guests can also ride purebred horses raised at this hacienda that also produces dairy products, grains and organic vegetables. The last evening is at the 23-room La Mirage Garden Hotel and Spa, the only Relais & Chateaux member property in Ecuador and built on the grounds of a 200-year-old hacienda. QuITO CElEBRaTIng OpEnIng Of Casa gangOTEna ThIs yEaR As Quito enjoys its year as the Cultural Capital of the Americas, this month the capital of Ecuador will have even more to celebrate: the opening of a new landmark hotel in the heart of the historic center, Casa Gangotena. Situated in a newly restored historic mansion overlooking Plaza San Francisco, the three-story boutique hotel has 31 rooms, each with eye-catching style, contemporary design, modern technologies and quintessential comforts to impress the most discerning guests. Beautifully and eclectically appointed, the hotel’s newly restored interiors draw the eye with Art Nouveau and contemporary touches combined with original Neo-Classical architecture. Huge efforts have been made to preserve and restore the mansion’s original details, assuring an air of history and sophistication dressed up with understated luxury. Each guest room is thoughtfully designed for utmost comfort beneath towering ceilings, with king-size beds occupying 13 rooms, twin beds the other 18. Glorious Andean light pours through tall windows, with views of the historic square, the inner courtyard or the Panecillo hillside, while two rooms on the second floor can be interconnected to provide expansive accommodation for families and traveling dignitaries. Full luxury amenities are standard. There is also a stylish library outfitted with well-stocked bookshelves for relaxing reading. Travel World News • www.travelworldnews.com

The hotel’s logo uses the symbol of a shell—an image that appears throughout the house since it was an element of the Gangotena family’s coat-of-arms, as well as representing Saint James and therefore pilgrims, perfect for a hotel dedicated to hosting pilgrims of Ecuador’s cultural and natural spirit. An original extra in the afternoons, the hotel invites its guests to enjoy the stimulating Quito tradition of a ‘Café Quiteño’ or Ecuadorian-style ‘high tea’—either in the glassed-in central patio or on the panoramic rooftop terrace. The freshest aromatic Ecuadorian coffee will be served alongside a host of original and invigorating teas. Drinks are accompanied by the Casa Gangotena’s take on the finest savory and sweet delicacies from Ecuador and beyond, including its very own line of single-source arriba chocolate. The hotel’s rates start from $375 plus taxes for Luxury rooms and from $480 plus taxes for Plaza View rooms. Casa gangotena, www.casagangotena.com

ThE panTanal, BRazIl— a fORgOTTEn WORld BROughT TO adVEnTuRERs By gOWay TRaVEl The exclusive Latin America division of 41-year-old Goway Travel is introducing the Pantanal—a remote yet virgin area of Brazil and home to the famous jaguar, anaconda and caiman. “Goway is able to offer our passengers, past and future, some of the most amazing nature destinations in all of Latin America; the Galapagos, Falkland Islands and Antarctica. Now we are pleased to announce the introduction of the Pantanal Adventure based from a working farm, the Caiman Eco Lodge,” states Don Forster, Product & Marketing Manager for Latin America. “The Pantanal is becoming one of the major ecological destinations in Brazil. Its location right in the middle of highly diverse ecosystems, like the Amazon, the Cerrado and the Atlantic forest, combined with high temperatures and cycles of dry and wet, gives the Pantanal the highest density of fauna in the Americas, compared to the richest areas of Africa. It was recently featured on “60 Minutes.” The Caiman Ecological Refuge is a pioneering ecotourism enterprise in the Southern Pantanal, situated on a cattle ranch (Estancia Caiman) of over 130 acres near the city of Miranda, around 146 miles west of the state capital Campo Grande and is accessible by road or an amazing light aircraft transfer similar to an air safari in Africa,” continues Forster. Travelers fly into Sao Paolo from North America and then fly to Campo Grande before taking their land or transfer into the Eco Lodge itself. Priced from $2,075, the Pantanal Adventure by Goway is truly one of the best ways to experience an often-overlooked area of Brazil and South America. It’s also easy to add on Iguassu Falls and Rio to the nature adventure in Brazil. The 2011–2012 Latin America travel planner prominently features this amazing journey as well as many other options in to Central and South America. goway Travel, 888-469 2955, www.goway.com OCTOBER 2011 •

It officially starts on Saturday and finishes on Fat Tuesday with the beginning of Lent on Ash Wednesday. “It is a great event where people dance, sing, party and have tons of fun. There are many parties that take place before, during and after Carnaval all night and all day. It allows travelers to see one of the world’s most remarkable events,” states Don Forster, Product Manager for Goway’s Latin America division. “The showcase event of Rio’s Carnaval is undoubtedly the twonight parades put on by traditional samba schools—ornate spectacles costing up to $2.5 million each with thousands of drummers, dancers and meticulously designed floats that begin Sunday night. The Samba Parade—the central focus of the weeklong celebrations—is something everybody should experience at least once in their life. Watching on TV is comfortable but not close to as much fun as being there,” continues Forster. PACIFIC ASIA IdyllIc THREE SPEcIAl PAcIFIc ISlAndEScAPES FRom GowAy Sunny, unique and unspoiled, the world’s most idyllic islands are thousands of miles of pristine white sand beaches, fabulous coral gardens and azure lagoons. The genuine friendliness and hospitality of the people is legendary, their smiles infectious, the gentle pace of life irresistibly seductive. IslandsEscapes by Goway offers three special Pacific destinations—Fiji, Samoa and Tonga. Brushed by the cool trade winds of the South Pacific and in the very heart of Polynesia, lies the Samoan Archipelago. The islands of history, myth and legends, and home to Samoans for thousands of years are islands of extraordinary beauty; where turquoise lagoons lap onto unspoiled white sand beaches lined with coconut palms, where cascading waterfalls, rich green rainforests, and mist enshrouded mountain peaks are all contained within a sparkling necklace of reefs. Tonga is unique. It’s an independent constitutional monarchy and the only South Pacific country never to have been colonized. Spread over 3,000 square miles of shimmering

turquoise South Seas, these remarkably diverse islands reflect the natural beauty of ancient Polynesia and are truly deserving of the romantic description of being the land “where time begins.” Comprised of 330 islands, Fiji’s people are friendly, smiling and always ready to entertain visitors. Guests will be amazed by traditional “fire walking,” still performed today. Fiji’s sun-drenched, palm-fringed island resorts are among the best in the world. Great value packages start from just $2,694. Travelers can explore Fiji and Samoa for just $2,779 or Fiji and Tonga for $2,694. Both packages include roundtrip airfare with Air Pacific from Los Angeles, meet and greet, all transfers, accommodation, select meals and more. More information on these packages is available on the Value Vacations page of Goway’s website. This and many other great escapes are described in their IslandsEscapes’ “World’s Most Idyllic Islands” brochure. Goway Travel, 800-667-6601, www.islandsescapes.com, www.goway.com

Sri Lanka is known for golden sand beaches, beautiful natural landscape and wildlife reserves, having 86 species of mammals from which 16 are indigenous to the island. The majestic Asian elephant can be found in almost all reserves including Yala National Park—home to leopards, sloth bears, spotted deer, wild boars and water buffaloes and abundant bird life. Goway’s 6-day Sri Lanka Highlights is perfect for experiencing this naturally beautiful country. In addition to Yala, travelers visit the elephant orphanage in Pinnawela, home to roughly 60 orphans. Clients see Kandy, the last capital of the ancient kings, popular for its lush and green landscape set among hills (1,600 ft altitude) and interesting history. The town center also boats old shops, antique and gemstone specialists and a bustling market. Travelers also visit the Royal Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya, renowned for its varieties of orchids, spices, medical plants, the famous “cannon ball tree” planted by King George V and Queen Mary and giant Java fig tree. Other highlights include Mt. Lavinia and the Galle Dutch Fort. Goway has also enhanced their “expert” status for the World’s Most Idyllic Islands with staff who have traveled to the Maldives. Like a string of pearls scattered over the Indian Ocean, the Maldives consists of 1,190 of the world’s most beautiful tropical coral islands. Ring-like coral formations enclose a lagoon and are surrounded by the finest white sand beaches. The stunning destination is one of the top dive locations in the world, with superb underwater scenery in a real-life aquarium and is one of the top five places in the world for dolphin and whale watching. Travelers can choose sophisticated accommodation or more natural simple resorts where almost all have a “no news, no shoes” policy. With mesmerizing sunsets and the aroma of flowers, Maldives radiates romance. Couples can enjoy a leisurely breakfast brought to their overeater bungalow by canoe, search out a secluded islet for a private picnic, or simply take a quiet stroll along the beach. PACIFIC ASIA SITA vP oPTImISTIc AFTER uSToA/nTA ‘REdIScovER jAPAn’ TouR

With positive updates from the US Department of State and the President of the Japan National Tourism Organization, SITA World Tours has seen a renewed interest in their travel packages to Japan. SITA Vice President Laudie Hanou announced that the company has now fully reinstated their various signature tours to Japan and is again welcoming customized travel requests to this ever-popular destination. Hanou recently served as the USTOA delegation leader on a sevenday “Rediscover Japan” tour for both USTOA and NTA that was hosted by the Japan National Tourist Organization (JNTO) and Japan Travel Agency (JTA). The delegation was impressed by the expedited recovery of the key tourism infrastructure including the airports and train system. Hanou remarked, “My impression of Japan, out of all the Asian countries, is that it has a unique offering—from its industrious people, its contrast in cities and nature, its mix of traditional and modern—all lend to an experience that any educated traveler would thoroughly enjoy.” Hanou emphasized that SITA is satisfied they can show their clients the vibrant and dynamic side of Japan with no compromise to safety, however, she acknowledged it will take time to change the perception of American travelers, following these events. On May 16, the US Department of State Bureau of Consular Affairs issued a Travel Alert that confirmed the safety of travel to Japan. In key cities such as Tokyo, Kyoto and Hakeone, daily life has resumed and without interruption with most major attractions, transport and tourism services. SITA is currently offering packages to Japan that include the following: Affordable Japan—8 days/7 nights beginning in Tokyo and including Mt. Fuji & Hakone, Nagoya, Magome, Tsumago and Kyoto. Japan’s Scenic Vistas—6 days/5 nights that include Tokyo, Mt. Fuji & Hakone and a Nara Excursion. Tokyo: Window to Japan—4 days/3 nights which focuses on Tokyo, Mt. Fuji and Hakone. An anniversary banquet will follow at the Outrigger Guam Resort. Few remember that the same day Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, December 7, 1941, Guam and Wake Island were also attacked. Wake Island was defended by a determined contingent of marines, sailors, soldiers and civilians against an overwhelming armada of Japanese naval forces. Often referred to as the “Alamo of the Pacific,” even the civilians, including construction workers from Guam, took up arms against the invasion. The Battle of Wake Island ended December 23, 1941, with the surrender of the American forces to Japan. Japan held the island until September 4, 1945, when the remaining Japanese garrison surrendered to a detachment of United States Marines. “We are pleased to welcome back brave soldiers from this historic battle and all those interested in the fascinating history of Wake Island,” said GVB General Manager Joann Camacho. military Tours, mhtours@miltours.com, www.miltours.com; Guam visitors Bureau, www.visitguam.org

GowAy oFFERS TouRS To koREA’S woRld ExPo 2012 The next World Fair will be held in Yeosu, a small, historic city with less than 300,00 inhabitants located in the southern center of the Korean Peninsula. Yeosu is blessed with beautiful sea resources, making it an ideal choice given this year’s theme: “The Living Ocean and the Coast: Diversity of Resources and Sustainable Activities.” The pavilions seen at the 2012 Expo will integrate the balance between ocean and coast preservation along with economic and sustainable development. Yeosu beat out competitors Tangier, Morocco and Wroclaw, Poland. Both Yeosu and Wroclaw had competed originally for Expo 2010, which was awarded to Shanghai, China. Goway offers two Expo tours. The 9-day Yeosu Expo small group journey is ideal for travelers seeking a true Korean cultural and historical experience, along with a unique focus on nature and sustainability in Yeosu. For those with less time, or interested in just stopping over in Korea, Goway’s 2-day Yeosu World Expo tour is an easy extension from Seoul. Fans of the World Expos will be interested to see the first building in Korea to be erected in the water, built by architect Gunther Weber. Unlike Shanghai’s World Expo which lasted 6 months, this fair will only last three months, so clients should plan well ahead. Otahuna Lodge, a historic seven-suite destination retreat located in the heart of New Zealand’s Canterbury region, has announced its reopening following the completion of refurbishment projects undertaken to maintain and preserve the Lodge’s distinct heritage and status as an architectural gem. Otahuna Lodge thus reintroduces authentic, bespoke guest experiences, as well as the property’s role as an iconic, historical landmark. As one of New Zealand’s most significant historic residences, Otahuna has a unique allure. Architecturally it remains almost unchanged since the Victorian era, according to its owners, Hall Cannon and Miles Refo. Over the past six years Otahuna has experienced a remarkable renewal. The property’s architectural details—elaborately turned woodwork, stained glass and fifteen wood-burning fireplaces— have been restored by some of New Zealand’s most venerated craftsmen. Culinary offerings are newly inspired, due to the revival of the Lodge’s iconic gardens that now grow some 115 varieties of organic fruits, nuts and vegetables. Whole acres of the garden have been uncovered and have recently bloomed for the first time since the 1950s. The past ten months have posed challenges unique to Otahuna in its 116-year history. The owners’ dedication remained steadfast and their commitment to ensuring its future is stronger than ever. Every team member remained throughout the closure periods, demonstrating extraordinary commitment to preserving the landmark for guests. otahuna lodge, enquiries@otahuna.co.nz, www.otahuna.co.nz

EclIPSE TRAvElER–SolAR EclIPSE SHowcASES 2012 ToTAl EclIPSE In AuSTRAlIA And nEw ZEAlAnd Eclipse Traveler–Solar Eclipse Tours, the sister company to FLO USA, is now offering tours of Australia and New Zealand that coincide with the solar eclipse in the Southern Hemisphere November 14, 2012. Four separate tours will range from 5 (for travelers not able to Travel World News • www.travelworldnews.com

stay longer), 8, 12 and 13 nights. Cities such as Cairns, Sydney, Ayers Rock, Melbourne, Auckland, Christchurch, and many more will be visited. Guests will stay in only 5-star hotels on each tour, such as the Shangri-la Marina Hotel in Cairns, the Intercontinental Sydney, the Langham in Auckland, Sofitel Hotel in Queenstown, and the George in Christchurch. The total eclipse will only be visible by a slither of landmass cutting through the tip of North Queensland (right over Cairns) in Australia for a period of between 2 minutes 4 seconds. The longest part will occur over the middle of the South Pacific Ocean and will last over 4 minutes. A total solar eclipse is one of the most amazing natural phenomena to experience. Each eclipse is a different length, and this is one of the most noticeable differences from eclipse to eclipse. As totality approaches, the environment noticeably changes. Temperature drops of over 10 degrees are not unusual. Observers will be able to see “Bailey Beeds”—where light from the sun breaks through the uneven surface of the moon. The diamond-ring effect marks the beginning and end of totality as a bright flash of light and it is one of the most amazing parts of the eclipse. A dedicated team searches for the best locations and carefully arranges the itineraries to provide the best possible eclipse-viewing experience. Due to the huge demand from past travelers, this company decided to start a dedicated website just for eclipse travelers. FLO USA’s experience in organizing escorted tours met with the knowledge of astronomy lovers and academics to form the ultimate experiences. Scott Young is an astronomer and science educator from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. He became interested in the sky February 26, 1979, at 11:16 in the morning when a total solar eclipse swept through his hometown and changed his future path forever. Scott has been active in the amateur astronomy community since the early 1980s, serving as president of the local chapter of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada twice and as the RASC’s national president 2006–2008. He works in the planetarium field, first as a show presenter and later as Manager Producer of The Manitoba Museum’s Planetarium in Winnipeg and a three-year stint as Director of the Alice G. Wallace Planetarium in Fitchburg, Massachusetts. Scott is an in-demand presenter, offering talks on astronomy and observing at star parties, conventions and local astronomy clubs across Canada. He is currently the Manager of Science Communication and Visitor Experiences at The Manitoba Museum, overseeing science program and exhibit development as well as planetarium show creation. Outside of his astronomical experience, Scott is an avid amateur musician. Asteroid #14698 is named Scott Young in recognition of his contributions to astronomy education.
