SOUTH AUSTRALIA

Adelaide City

S

outh Australia presents international visitors with the very best of Australian experiences. It is home to stunning coastline with exciting aquatic adventures, unspoilt nature, abundant wildlife, accessible outback, colourful festivals, awardwinning events and world-class culinary indulgence. South Australia, while vast, is accessible. With direct airline access from seven international carriers including Singapore Airlines, Malaysia Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Air New Zealand, Emirates, Qatar Airways and China Southern, it’s the ideal place to start your Australian itinerary.

WILDLIFE EXPERIENCES Wildlife experiences in South Australia are unparalleled and can be found all over the state. Discover a completely unique subspecies of kangaroo on Kangaroo Island, come close to great white sharks on the Eyre Peninsula, or soar high in the skies with wedge-tailed eagles in the rugged landscape of the Flinders Ranges and Outback. On Kangaroo Island, swim with a pod of wild dolphins and walk among a colony of endangered Australian sea lions on the protected beach of Seal Bay. The koalas are plentiful and there are 167 bird species on the island. Kangaroo Island is protected from mainland predators such as feral foxes and rabbits, so the native animals thrive in their island paradise. Kangaroo Island is a sanctuary for koalas, kangaroos, endangered tammar wallabies, Australian sea lions, short-beaked echidnas, southern brown bandicoots, brushtail possums, critically endangered Kangaroo Island dunnarts, native goannas, snakes, bats, frogs, dolphins and birds. More than a third of the island is dedicated conservation park, with protected bays, dense bush and unspoilt coastline, ensuring an authentic wildlife experience in the wild!

4 SOUTH AUSTRALIAN STORIES

On the Eyre Peninsula, swim with friendly sea lions and dolphins in the clear waters. For those in need of an adrenaline fix, go cage diving with great white sharks – the only place in Australia where this thrilling experience is possible. Further inland near the remote, ancient Gawler Ranges, embark on an outback adventure that is experienced only by the lucky few. Here, the animals roam in huge numbers, and it is a particularly good place to find Australian wildlife, including the southern hairy-nosed wombat, pygmy possum, hopping mouse, and the endangered yellow-footed rock wallaby. There are around 140 different bird species in this area, most clearly seen further north when the inland Lake Eyre fills with water after the rains. Pelicans, silver gulls, red-necked avocets, banded stilts and gull-billed terns can be spotted by eager birdwatchers. The Flinders Ranges, north of Adelaide, is just a four hour drive, but it feels like millions of miles – or years – away. This ancient, rugged landscape is where the world’s first complex life forms existed more than 600 million years ago.

Kanku-Breakaways Conservation Park, Flinders Ranges and Outback

Swimming with Sea Lions, Eyre Peninsula

Three different species of kangaroo (red kangaroo, western grey kangaroo, and the smaller euro kangaroo) can be found here, numbering in the thousands and seen hundreds at a time at dawn or dusk. Emus, the second-largest bird in the world, can be seen regularly. During the breeding season (May and June), females will lay several clutches of eggs, but it’s the fathers that incubate them and raise the young. Above, the majestic wedge-tailed eagle can often be seen, with a wingspan reaching up to two metres in length, soaring on the thermal currents. Wedgetailed eagles are Australia’s largest bird of prey and are one of about a hundred different bird species found in the region.

Cleland Wildlife Park, Adelaide Hills

The picturesque vineyards dotted on the hillsides and valleys are rich with coolclimate grape varieties and fruit orchards galore. The tree-lined main streets of the villages and townships are welcoming community hotspots where you can almost feel the heartbeat of the Adelaide Hills. To the south of the city, the Fleurieu Peninsula yields another wine region – McLaren Vale – and ochre-coloured cliffs overlooking some of the best beaches in the state. On Kangaroo Island, see the giant granite formations of the Remarkable Rocks, sculpted into otherworldly shapes by wind, rain and sea.

The amphitheatre of Admirals Arch is testament to the powerful waves of the Southern Ocean. From here, there is no more land until you reach Antarctica. The Flinders Ranges and Outback is an awe-inspiring sight. At its heart, is Wilpena Pound, once a mountain big enough to dwarf Mt Everest, eroded away over millions of years to become a spectacular landform. It is approximately 17km (10.5mi) long and 8km (5mi) wide; its highest peak is 1171m (3800ft) above sea level. The Pound today is recognised by its Aboriginal Adnyamathanha name ‘Ikara’, which means ‘meeting place’.

STRIKING LANDSCAPES South Australia is a contrasting landscape with rugged coastlines, pristine beaches, rolling hills, neatly cultivated farmland and ancient rock formations. There is space to breathe in South Australia, and this is apparent with the wild, scenic views and big skies that can be found wherever your intrepid feet may take you. The Adelaide Hills is just east of the capital city and only a 20 minute drive away.

Younghusband, Murray River

The Obelisk, Limestone Coast

It is a place of awe where the skies stretch on, seemingly endlessly; where the stars shine brightly at night undimmed by light pollution; and where you feel a true sense of space and your place in the world. There is more than 2000km (1200mi) of coastline on the Eyre Peninsula, made up of beaches, cliffs and farming bays. This is the place to go to get a sense of space, to feel the ocean spray, and while you’re at it, dine on some of the freshest seafood in the world. The Eyre Peninsula offers some of the best experiences in South Australia, from the wide, open vistas to delicacies from the sea and aquatic experiences like no other.

Riesling Trail, Clare Valley

The Limestone Coast is a self-drive paradise. It is a picture-perfect option for a leisurely drive from Melbourne to Adelaide, following on from the Great Ocean Road. On the South Australian side, the landscape changes from wild cliffs to long stretches of unbroken and mostly deserted beaches. Patchwork quilts of farmland dot the landscape and good food and charming country hospitality is found every step of the way. From there, take a small detour to the Murray River, the lifeblood of South Australia. The river winds its way from its source in New South Wales, through Victoria and into South Australia.

Hire and captain a houseboat and float serenely along the river. Spot local wildlife, take in the spectacular scenery, swim, fish, and stop at the townships along the way. It’s the ideal way to relax.

CULINARY DELIGHTS Adelaide is fast becoming a culinary hub for its local, sustainable and revolutionary food practices. Locals revere and celebrate what is produced in their own backyard: organically grown heirloom varieties, artisan and handmade delicacies, and small boutique wineries, breweries and distilleries. The provenance of the ingredients cannot be mistaken: it is uniquely South Australian. Native and foraged foods are featured on many restaurant menus, taking into account truly Australian ingredients such as quandong, green ants, bunya nut, native plum, sea lettuce, ice plant and Goolwa cockles (small clams), to name just a handful! It’s no wonder that international chefs are flocking to South Australia, much to the delight of adoring South Australian diners and visitors who come from far and wide to get a taste of the state.

Dining at Public, Adelaide

As a central hub for food in the city, the Adelaide Central Market is the oldest undercover produce market in Australia. Locals and visitors alike search the colourful aisles for the freshest fruit, vegetables, smallgoods, meat and seafood. It’s a cacophony of colours, smells, tastes and fun.

Barossa, Adelaide Hills, Clare Valley, McLaren Vale and Coonawarra – further strengthens our global reputation for premium food and wine tourism. We have some of the oldest, continuously producing vines in the world, exceptional wine tourism experiences, and are the largest exporter of premium wine in Australia.

Adelaide is a melting pot of high quality, mouth-watering food and drink that is grown, reared, farmed, crafted, brewed, distilled and fermented in South Australia’s regions. The food and beverages produced in South Australia are a testament to South Australian producers: their passion, hard work, and intimate knowledge of their land pays off for the benefit of us all.

Spend some time in the Coonawarra, a wine region renowned for its terra rosa soil, producing some of the best Cabernet Sauvignon in the world. The famed Barossa Shiraz should not be passed up, for those who love a big, bold red. Further north in the Clare Valley, Riesling is king, and in the Adelaide Hills, cool-climate and minimal intervention wines are all the rage.

ADELAIDE, A GREAT WINE CAPITAL OF THE WORLD

Being a Great Wine Capital is about more than just producing excellent wine. We have one-of-a-kind wine experiences that are unheard of elsewhere. Taste a tawny wine made the year you were born at Seppeltsfield in the Barossa; fling a watermelon from a medieval catapult at Wirra Wirra in McLaren Vale, visit the newly developed d’Arenberg Cube – it has to be seen to be believed – and hit a golf ball off towards stunning ocean views at Dudley Wines on Kangaroo Island. The options are varied, entertaining, and almost endless.

Adelaide, South Australia recently joined the exclusive Great Wine Capitals Global Network – an internationally renowned group of the most famous and reputable wine regions of the world. Adelaide joins the likes of San Francisco’s Napa Valley, USA; Bordeaux, France; Rioja, Spain; and Porto in Portugal to name a few. The membership – with Adelaide representing all 18 of South Australia’s unique and distinct wine regions including

EXCEPTIONAL KANGAROO ISLAND The team at Exceptional Kangaroo Island are passionate about where they live and what they do. Share in their rich, expert knowledge about the island’s wildlife and habitats, ecology and history. Choose from their many tours that take in all aspects of island life, but the common theme among them all is the prolific wildlife that inhabits Kangaroo Island. With its own subspecies of kangaroo that is endemic to the island, Kangaroo Island is teeming with native wildlife. Free from feral foxes and rabbits, Australian marsupials thrive. Kangaroo Island is also home to a huge population of fur seals and Australian sea lions as well as birdlife including the endangered red-tailed black cockatoo. www.exceptionalkangarooisland.com

GOIN’ OFF SAFARIS

ARKABA

The rugged coastline of the Eyre Peninsula is a haven for aquatic wildlife and few know it better than the team at Goin’ Off Safaris.

This private wildlife conservancy was once, like many properties in this part of the Flinders Ranges, a sheep station. Now, with the sheep gone and the land returning to its former glory, the 60,000 acre conservancy is welcoming back kangaroos, emus, wallabies and other native wildlife in their thousands.

Among their many tours, Underwater Adventures is a two day, two night experience that includes an adrenalinepumping shark cage dive; swimming with lightning-fast Southern bluefin tuna; and a final relaxing frolic with cute and playful Australian sea lions. Goin’ Off Safaris also conduct bespoke tours. There are plenty of emus and kangaroos to be seen, as well as wild koalas lounging around on tree branches low enough that you can even pat them! www.goinoffsafaris.com.au

With just ten guests on a property roughly the size of Colorado, USA, it’s easy to see why the wildlife experience here is second to none. Visitors can take part in a four-day guided walk across the property, sighting native animals and myriad birds during the day, and dining on chef-prepared meals and camping in luxury swags at night. This puts them in prime position to spot the native wildlife at dawn and dusk when they are at their most active. Alternatively, those choosing to relax at the luxury homestead can enjoy the less strenuous version, with a ridge top tour in an open-top SUV with knowledgeable guides and local walks on marked trails. www.arkabastation.com SOUTH AUSTRALIAN STORIES 9

Adelaide’s first late-night supper club and cocktail bar is set in a swish basement venue serving up meals made from local ingredients with a modern twist. The New York inspired décor includes two areas: the Soho Lounge for casual drinks and the Manhattan Dining Room with full table service until 6am. The cuisine is classy; a perfect fit for the charm and sophistication of the restaurant, and the liquors used in the cocktails are created with South Australian ingredients at their heart.

New restaurant Iberia in Rundle Street is a split level homage to the Iberian Peninsula. Owners Tom and James Roden (who own Exchange Specialty Coffee around the corner from Iberia) have cultivated a menu with Head Chef Andrew Douglas to create delectable bites and sharing plates reminiscent of the region, recreated in a contemporary setting in the bustling East End of the city.

Sunny’s Pizza, Adelaide

LOST IN A FOREST

SUNSET FOOD & WINE

SUNNY’S PIZZA

In the little town of Uraidla in the Adelaide Hills, an old church has found new life as a cool new pizzeria and bar. The handmade wood oven in the back cooks a range of pizzas under the guidance of Head Chef Nick Filsell, including the Vietnameseinspired Banh Mi pizza; ‘Shroom – a trio of mushrooms (locally foraged, when in season) with blue cheese and truffle salt; and Buzzbomb made with Lost in a Forest’s own chilli-infused honey. The venue is also home to Ochota Barrels – a minimal intervention, natural winery from the region. They also serve-up natural wines from their Basket Range neighbours, keeping it nice and local.

Kangaroo Island has always been a place for food lovers, and some just stand out. Sunset Food & Wine is one such example, newly opened just outside Penneshaw where the ferry docks. Sunset Food & Wine is a modern bistro with a seafood focus coupled with stunning ocean views. Head Chef Jack Ingram has created a masterpiece of flavours and textures, featuring the very best of Kangaroo Island produce.

Retro and wonderfully kitsch in the best way, Sunny’s Pizza is like nothing else in Adelaide. Opened recently by five friends and designed by Adelaide’s Studio-Gram (the architects behind Africola and Osteria Oggi), a meal at Sunny’s feels like a meal at your most eccentric friend’s house, but with the addition of an awesome bar, DJs and, let’s face it, probably much better food.

Grab some friends, a slice, and head to the beach for a quick dip. www.chiccos.com.au

SHŌBŌSHO The newest addition to Leigh Street in Adelaide’s West End, Shōbōsho is the latest venture from prolific South Australian restauranteur Simon Kardachi (who owns Press*, Osteria Oggi, Bread & Bone and five other establishments). The Japanese-inspired menu blends smoke, steam and fire – the ancient traditions of Japanese yakitori – and has drawn back Head Chef Adam Liston after his stints in Shanghai and Melbourne. With the kitchen open late, this modern interpretation of Japanese cuisine is definitely one to surprise and delight. www.shobosho.com.au

BARS

Peel Street Precinct, Adelaide

ALFRED’S

THERAPY COCKTAIL BAR

SPOT & CO

Charming, unpretentious and welcoming, Alfred’s is an already much-loved newcomer to Adelaide’s thriving Peel Street. Alfred’s has a unique half bar, half pub feel, pouring a fantastic range of well-known beers, spirits and wines. The décor is warm, modern and comfortable with a dart board upstairs and plenty of seating over two floors, spilling outside during the warmer months.

One of the newest establishments to hit the ever-changing and ever-growing Peel Street, Therapy is a luxe basement bar specialising in cocktails. The menu is extensive, featuring everything from old favourites to outrageous concoctions, using only the best spirits. Inside, you’ll find exposed brick, leather and moody lighting, creating a classic late night cigar bar vibe. Funnily enough, one of Therapy’s bartenders is a qualified psychologist. Enough said.

Spot & Co whisky and cocktail lounge is Adelaide’s newest hotspot for spirits. With an unparalleled whisky, gin, tequila, rum and vodka selection as well as an enviable wine and craft beer list, it’s an old-school but contemporary bar that’s big on class. It’s the perfect place to relax with a wine after work, or set the mood on the weekend.

THE BEVERAGE COLLECTIVE BADDOG BAR Hidden away on Adelaide’s Hyde Street, BadDog whiskey bar opened earlier this year on the low-down. With the tagline “If the light’s on, we’re home”, BadDog’s exterior consists of little more than an unmarked door. Inside, however, drinkers are treated to a cozy, blues-style bar with exposed lighting, leather booths and exposed concrete floors. It offers a great wine list, delicious cocktails and wonderful selection of local and imported beer.

With so many new bars popping up in Adelaide, it’s easy to get overwhelmed. That’s where The Beverage Collective comes in. Making a name for itself as Adelaide’s best bar and beverage experience, The Beverage Collective is a walking tour taking keen drinkers to 16 of Adelaide’s best bars with multiple packages to suit different budgets, time constraints and, of course, alcohol tolerances.
