WELCOME TO HELSINKI, THE MOST SURPRISING CITY IN THE NORTH! The northern capital of Helsinki is full of titillating surprises just waiting to be discovered. Our city welcomes you with open arms to enjoy its innovative urban culture, the ever-present nature and sea, and the friendliness and openness of the locals. Located between East and West, and absorbing influences from both sides, Helsinki is a dynamic and future-oriented city that combines trends and traditions in its own special way. Layers of fine architecture, functional design, a playful and often surprising food culture, and an enormous range of events, both large and small, intertwine to form a fascinating capital that offers experiences in all

seasons of the year. A high level of expertise and lively start-up culture are part of the identity of our vibrant city. Have you felt the fresh sea breeze on your face, admired the meandering shoreline that circles the city, or watched the skaters in wintertime in the centre? Have you spotted Moomin in a shop window, been caught by surprise by a food bike selling porridge, or visited a public sauna yet? Helsinki is full of surprises. Let its laid-back rhythm take you away! We hope you have such a good time here that you will return soon!

”Helsinki’s secret is in its people and moments. In the people that build the city and its culture, ways and happenings. In the moment when you understand how small and unique Helsinki is, how easy it is to get from one place to the next; one island to the next, one sauna to the next, one restaurant to the next, one season to the next. Helsinki’s secret is in the person who seeks and finds new cafés, shops, flea markets, their own secret places where to have fun and relax throughout the year. Helsinki’s secret is in the moment when you realise that Helsinki has no secrets - that everything is within reach, just for you.”

A BRIEF HISTORY OF HELSINKI When Helsinki was established by King Gustav Vasa of Sweden in 1550, it had a population of just 500. Helsinki was meant to compete with Tallinn (then known as Reval) for trade with Russia, so the king ordered merchants from nearby towns to relocate to Helsinki. Helsinki grew slowly. An outbreak of the plague in 1710 killed two thirds of the population, leaving just 600. In May 1713 the Russian naval fleet sailed to Helsinki with 17,000 soldiers. The town was defended by fewer than 2,000 soldiers. Faced by a hopeless situation, the commander of the Finnish troops ordered the army to set fire to Helsinki, which burned down in just one night. The Russian army occupied the abandoned town for the next eight years. In 1721 Sweden and Russia signed the Treaty of Nystad (Uusikaupunki), and work began on rebuilding Helsinki.

considered unconquerable, the fortress surrendered without a fight after two months. The following year, in 1809, Sweden and Russia signed the Treaty of Fredrikshamn (Hamina) ending hostilities. Sweden ceded the entire territory of Finland to Russia, and Tsar Alexander I of Russia decided to move the Finnish capital from Turku to Helsinki in order to reduce Swedish influence and bring the capital nearer to St. Petersburg. Helsinki officially became the capital of Finland in 1812. It did not achieve the status of a major city until 1907, however, when its population exceeded 100,000 for the first time. During the First World War, Helsinki was spared the fighting as there were no military operations on Finnish territory. Finland proclaimed independence on 6 December 1917 with Helsinki as its capital.

The Russian army occupied Helsinki again in 1741. The period known as the Lesser Wrath (Pikkuviha) ended with the signing of the Treaty of Ă…bo (Turku) in 1743. Helsinki remained part of Sweden. In early 1808 the Russian army occupied Helsinki and laid siege to Sveaborg (Suomenlinna). Despite being

HISTORIC CENTRE

SOFIANKATU STREET

Maija Astikainen

A great place to start exploring the historic centre is the Market Square, where the items on sale are dictated by the seasons. In summertime you can taste fresh Finnish strawberries, in the autumn you can stock up on pickled herring, and in wintertime you can enjoy a hot cup of coffee in one of the warm tents. The adjacent Old Market Hall is packed with fragrant delicacies all year round, and you can also enjoy a delicious lunch there. Many high-quality restaurants can be found in the immediate vicinity of the Market Square and are particularly welcoming at the end of the day. The historic Tori Quarter that lies between the Market Square and Senate Square has been revitalised in recent years and is now home to numerous cafés and restaurants. A wide range of events are also held here, from dances to film evenings, while quaint boutiques sell beautiful Finnish design and handicrafts to bring home with you.

A stone’s throw from Senate Square is the district of Kruununhaka. Check out the antique shops along Mariankatu and the traditional local restaurants along Liisankatu, where you can taste classic Finnish dishes like fried herring or meatballs. While strolling along the streets, don’t forget to look up, as the facades of the buildings are among the most beautiful in Helsinki.

MARKET SQUARE

On the other side of the Tori Quarter is Senate Square and the most recognisable building in the city, Helsinki Cathedral, the neoclassical masterpiece designed by the city’s architect Carl Ludvig Engel. The steps leading up to the cathedral are a popular place to sit and soak up the sun on a summer’s day. In the darkness of winter the brilliant white cathedral glows beautifully, and during the Christmas season the square below is filled with the stalls of the Helsinki Christmas Market.

TORI QUARTER

You don’t have to wander far from the busy shopping streets to sense the atmosphere of a bygone era. Cobblestoned alleys and impressive old architecture provide a wonderful setting for the numerous boutiques and cosy cafés in the historic centre of Helsinki.

The square is dominated by four buildings designed by Carl Ludvig Engel between 1822 and 1852: Helsinki Cathedral, the Government Palace, the main building of the University of Helsinki and the National Library of Finland. A prayer service with music is held in the Cathedral on weekdays at noon. There is also an evening service on Saturdays at 6pm and a Sunday service at 10am. Various events, exhibitions and concerts are held in the Crypt (Kirkkokatu 8), where there is also a summer café. Unioninkatu 29 www.helsinginkirkot.fi/en/ churches/cathedral 26. Today the quarter is once again being revitalised as an active centre of urban culture in the form of numerous events, design boutiques, restaurants and cafés. DESIGN DISTRICT A great place to get a feel for the local rhythm of life is the district of Punavuori and its surrounding neighbourhoods on the peninsula to the south of the Esplanade. In the daytime the lively streets are filled with trendy representatives of the creative industries lunching out in the cool local eateries. The pace of change in this part of town is rapid, with new restaurants and bars appearing all the time. As a result, Punavuori is perfect for checking out the latest food trends, such as the current fad for gourmet fast food. Mexican and Middle Eastern cuisine is also popular right now – as is the healthy uncooked food available at cafés. Major international chains are conspicuously absent in Punavuori, and many traditional shops have had to make way for newcomers. Fredrikinkatu in particular has evolved a lot over the past couple of years, and many interesting interior design and kitchen shops have appeared along the street in addition to the boutiques selling Finnish design. Iso Roobertinkatu,

Uudenmaankatu and Annankatu are also worth strolling end to end. Both the Design Museum and the Museum of Finnish Architecture can be found halfway up Korkeavuorenkatu, the southern end of which is full of nice cafés and boutiques that are worth checking out. The best way to explore this part of town is on foot, and you can easily spend an entire day there. If your feet get tired, sit down on one of the numerous streetside terraces and relax as the world goes by. Many of the local cafés and restaurants are child friendly, and there are plenty of playgrounds along the way. If you are shopping with or for your kids, Punavuori also has great boutiques selling children’s fashion, sweets and toys. If you want to see a slice of the idyllic life in South Helsinki, take a peek inside one of the courtyards. The gates often conceal old buildings and quaint gardens in which time seems to have stood still.

”Helsinki’s secret is all the locals who are proud of their own city. Their collective pride makes Helsinki sparkle with its own energy.”

Helsinki, World Design Capital back in 2012, is the perfect city for both design shopping and discovering Finland’s unique design culture. Minimalistic, functional and clean Finnish design has enjoyed an enviable international reputation for decades. The most famous names in Finnish design include Alvar Aalto, Eero Aarnio, Kaj Franck, Timo Sarpaneva, Nanny Still and Tapio Wirkkala. In the fashion industry, Samu-Jussi Koski, Sasu Kauppi, Paola Suhonen, Teemu Muurimäki, Katri Niskanen, Aki Chocklat and

Minna Parikka have followed in the footsteps of design icon Marimekko and wowed audiences the world over. DESIGN DISTRICT Fans of design must visit the Design District. The area is home to around 200 designer shops, interior decorating studios, antique dealers, clothing and jewellery boutiques, galleries, museums and restaurants. The symbolic centre of the district is Dianapuisto Park. From here the Design District stretches into the districts of Kaartinkaupunki, Kamppi, Punavuori and Ullan-

linna. Members of the Design District network can be identified by the “Design District Helsinki” sticker on the window. The Design District is also home to the Design Museum (Korkeavuorenkatu 23), which presents exhibitions on the history of Finnish design and current trends. www.designdistrict.fi www.designmuseum.fi A map of the Design District is available from Tourist Information or from Design District locations.

GREEN DISTRICT Helsinki is a lovely place to breathe in the fresh air. Just a short walk from the city centre, right behind the iconic Finlandia Hall, awaits the beautiful Töölönlahti bay. The surrounding park is a popular recreational area all year round. It’s a place people go for walks, jogging and coffees – and these days even stand-up paddleboarding. Numerous popular sports centres can be found nearby. In summertime the open-air Swimming Stadium attracts swimmers and sun worshippers alike to spend the day among family and friends by the pools. The Töölö Sports Hall is used for indoor activities ranging from badminton to kettlebell exercises, while outdoors you can cycle, walk or jog through the forests of ”Central Park” (Keskuspuisto). Culture and food lovers will find themselves right at home in the quiet and prestigious district of Töölö. The best way to explore the neighbourhood is on foot, but you can also get around easily by tram or bus. The Helsinki Music Centre, Finnish National Opera, Kunsthalle Helsinki and Korjaamo Culture

Factory are all situated within a short distance of each other and offer a wide range of cultural entertainment from classical to contemporary. Töölö is also full of restaurants where you can spend an evening before or after a theatre or opera performance, for example. Classic Finnish cuisine can be savoured at the cultural restaurant Elite, the traditional Lehtovaara or the modern Kuu Kuu. Culinarists will also appreciate the abundance of delicatessens, especially along Museokatu. In summertime you can purchase picnic supplies from them and head for the lawns of Sibelius Park. Down by the sea you can continue your walk along a pretty shoreline path towards Hietaniemi. Along the way you will find the cosy Café Regatta, which looks like a traditional red summer cottage and serves mouthwatering cinnamon buns. If you want to experience local life up close, head for the Töölöntori market square. In summertime it is packed with stalls, among which you can sip coffees and mingle with the locals!

HELSINKI ARCHIPELAGO The sea that surrounds Helsinki is an integral part of the city’s character. With over 100 kilometres of meandering shoreline, the maritime atmosphere can be enjoyed from one side of Helsinki to the other. The shoreline around the Kaivopuisto Park on the southern tip of the peninsula is particularly popular, especially on summer weekends when people come from near and far to take in the fresh sea air. While promenading along the walkway you stop at one of the numerous ice cream kiosks and cafés. Kaivopuisto is also one of the most popular picnic places in town, attracting people to relax on its green lawns and smooth rocks. The recreational islands of Pihlajasaari and Uunisaari are just a short ferry ride from the mainland and are heavenly places to sunbathe in

summertime. In wintertime you can get to Uunisaari across a pontoon bridge and admire the view back to the city over the water. In total there are around 300 islands in the archipelago, offering plenty to see and experience all year round. When visiting the islands it’s good to wear a comfortable pair of shoes and allow yourself plenty of time. The numerous island restaurants serve a wide range of delicious food, from summer treats to gourmet dinners. You can also admire the archipelago scenery while relaxing on one of the many ferries or cruise boats. Sightseeing cruises and lunch and dinner cruises depart regularly from the Market Square in the city centre.

Naturally, the sea is also ideal for water sports, such as stand-up paddling, windsurfing and paddling. The city also has many public swimming beaches, some with their own fitness areas and outdoor exercise equipment. In wintertime the sea usually freezes over, allowing you to admire the views while skiing or walking across the ice. If you are feeling brave you can even try ice swimming – taking a dip in a hole cut in the ice – together with a nice hot sauna! TAKE A SELFIE! Suomenlinna is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the largest sea fortresses in the world. Each year it attracts over 800,000 visitors. SUMMER The municipal ferry to Suomenlinna departs from the eastern edge of the Market Square, and the crossing takes around fifteen minutes. The Visitor Centre is situated next to the ferry quay when you arrive, and staff members are happy to provide useful tips and information about the fortress. Queues may form on the sunniest of summer days, but you can also get there from the Market Square aboard the JT-Line waterbus, which takes you all the way to the centre of the fortress by the Suomenlinna Centre. The best way to learn more about Suomenlinna is with a guided walking tour, which are offered daily throughout the summer in several languages. You can also travel back in time to the 1700s and take a cruise aboard the gun sloop Diana! In addition, Suomenlinna has six interesting museums that you can visit with a combined ticket (18 euros) that is valid all summer long. Suomenlinna is a popular venue for concerts, theatre performances and other events, so check out the event calendar before your visit on the Suomenlinna website. Handicrafts and souvenirs can be purchased from the Arts and Crafts Summer Shop and the Icecellar Art Shop. 44

One of the most exciting things to do at Suomenlinna is to explore the tunnels inside the bastion walls. Even in the middle of the day they are dark and murky, so pack a flashlight with you! While exploring the islands you can enjoy lunch at one of the many restaurants or treat yourself to delicious homemade pastries at Café Samovarbar or Café Vanille. Suomenlinna also has its own brewery, so do sample the local beer before you leave! Many of the restaurants and cafés have their own sunny terraces where you can relax and enjoy the magnificent views. WINTER The municipal ferry from the Market Square to Suomenlinna operates all year round – even when the sea is frozen over. The crossing through the ice is an adventure in itself! When you arrive, head for the Visitor Centre by the ferry quay to find out more about current events and services. There is also free WiFi and an exhibition that provides useful background information before your visit. At the Suomenlinna Museum you can learn about the history of the fortress in more detail. A short film is screened every half hour, and the audio commentary is available in nine languages. You can also purchase souvenirs in the shop and enjoy a coffee in the café. The other cafés and restaurants that are open all year round at Suomenlinna include Viaporin Deli, Jääkellari,

Dorit Salutskij

EXPLORE SUOMENLINNA Café Chapman, Café Vanille and Klubi 20. If you happen to be visiting on a Wednesday, you can visit the handicraft studios on the island of Susisaari. The Ceramic Studio Pot Viapori and Esa Toivanen’s carpentry studio have open doors on Wednesdays throughout the winter. On Saturdays and Sundays you can join a guided walking tour in English starting at 1:30pm. Naturally, you can also explore the island of Susisaari and Kustaanmiekka by yourself and enjoy the peace and quiet while admiring the breathtaking views. After sundown you can stay and stargaze in the perfect silence. To find out more about the services and offerings at Suomenlinna, check out the www.suomenlinna.fi website, where you will also find opening hours for all services.

ENJOY THE OLD TIME CHARM OF SEURASAARI Among the many fine recreational areas in Helsinki, the island of Seurasaari is in a class of its own. Not only can you enjoy an invigorating walk along the path around the island, you can also admire the historic wooden farm buildings from different parts of Finland at the Open-Air Museum. In summertime you can take a closer look inside and learn more about the buildings by paying the admission fee, but you can also stroll among the buildings free of charge.

Seurasaari is a great place for a picnic, and in summertime you should also pack with your swimsuit as the rocks and sandy beaches are great for swimming and sunbathing. For a small fee of three euros you can access the special swimming area on the west side of the island, which also has separate enclosed naturalist beaches for women and men. On Wednesdays and Sundays the swimming beach is shared by women and men, so swimsuits have to be worn.

Seurasaari is a very popular outdoor destination among locals, especially on weekends. To get to the island from the mainland you have to cross a long wooden bridge, and it takes around one hour to walk all the way around the island. You can also explore the island in more depth by crisscrossing it as you like. Along the way you may be greeted by the inquisitive squirrels looking for a treat!

Among the sights on the island, the oldest is the wooden Karuna Church, which dates back to 1686, while the newest is the Kalevalakehto (Shaman’s Haven of the Kalevala) installation by American architect Travis Price that was unveiled in 2010. While exploring the island you should also visit the Festival Grounds, where a traditional form of Finnish skittles called “kyykkä” is played.

ARCHIPELAGO EXCURSIONS From the Market Square you can catch a ferry to Suomenlinna or, in summertime, a cruise to Helsinki Zoo or Porvoo. Many of the nearby islands are open to the public for recreational use. The islands of Pihlajasaari and Uunisaari are particular popular places for spending sunny days in the archipelago; ferries to these islands depart from the shoreline south of Kaivopuisto Park. Uunisaari is also accessible in wintertime over a pontoon bridge. PIHLAJASAARI In the late 19th century, the island of Pihlajasaari was home to dozens of Russian villas connected by paths built by Chinese prisoners of war. In the 1930s the island became a popular retreat for locals, who put on their swimming suits in the changing huts. Traces of the island’s history can still be seen, but for the most part people are attracted to Pihlajasaari by the smooth granite rocks, the sandy beaches and the traditional donuts at the restaurant. The ferry crossing from Merisatama and Ruoholahti takes around 10 minutes. The recreational park is open every day in summertime. The island has a restaurant, kiosk and grilling shelters, as well as a naturalist beach and a camping site. www.pihlajasaari.net HARAKKA The island of Harakka is a popular recreational area that can be reached by ferry from the Ullanlinna quay on the southern tip of Helsinki. The artist residence on the island presents exhibitions between May and September. There is also a nature centre on the island offering guided tours that present the birdlife, rare plants, butterflies and maritime nature. www.harakansaari.fi 48

MUSTASAARI The island of Mustasaari is situated 15 minutes from the city centre by ferry, which departs from the Taivallahti quay at the western end of Eteläinen Hesperiankatu. The island is especially popular among families with children thanks to its domestic animals, sheep, nature trail and swimming beach. There is also a café in the main building. The island is owned by the Helsinki Parish Union and is open to the public from the beginning of June to the middle of August. Enquiries: mustasaari@evl.fi UUNISAARI Just off the southern shoreline by the Kaivopuisto Park is the island of Uunisaari, which is in fact a pair of islands connected by a small bridge. With its sandy beach and café, Uunisaari is a popular recreational island and picnic destination. In summertime a small ferry operates between the island and the mainland, and in wintertime there is a pontoon bridge that you can walk across. www.uunisaari.com LONNA The island of Lonna, which was previously used as a minesweeping base, was opened to the public in spring 2014. The island is situated between the Market Square and Suomenlinna, just 10 minutes from the mainland. Services on the island currently include a restaurant and café, and a public sauna is also planned. The island is open to the public in summertime. www.lonna.fi

NEW! VALLISAARI Situated between Santahamina and Suomenlinna, the island of Vallisaari is a new urban nature destination that will open to the public in early summer 2016. Visitors can enjoy the unspoilt nature and historic fortifications, as well as a café and guest harbour. www.jt-line.fi VARTIOSAARI Situated just a short ferry ride from the mainland in East Helsinki, the island of Vartiosaari is one of the best mushroom and berry picking locations in Helsinki. The diverse nature on the island can be explored along a nature trail. The peak of the island stands 32 metres above sea level. In wintertime the island is ideal for cross-country skiing and sledding. www.suomensaaristokuljetus.fi KAUNISSAARI The island of Kaunissaari lies in the outer archipelago approximately 40 minutes from the mainland. The island features a beautiful rocky shoreline as well as sandy beaches. The diverse nature can be enjoyed by all, and the island is especially ideal for fishing, camping and hiking. The island is open to the public in summertime. www.suomensaaristokuljetus.fi

”One of Helsinki’s secrets is the surrounding archipelago, which is unfamiliar to many. HIPSTER DISTRICT The Pitkäsilta “Long Bridge” to Hakaniemi connects the southern and northern parts of the city centre. The streets and neighbourhoods to the north of the bridge have undergone a stunning transformation in recent years with the arrival of trendy restaurants, cool bars and popular clubs. Kallio in particular has attracted international attention as a hipster district where the older generation of inhabitants lives side by side with the younger generation. Kallio is a refreshing antidote to the more snobbish parts of town. Its creativity, cultural richness and bohemian lifestyle have made it into an active neighbourhood where everyone is welcome. In the heart of Kallio lies the Karhupuisto ”Bear Park”, which is surrounded by new cafés serving organic food and friendly lunch establishments. The park is particularly popular during the regular Restaurant Day and Cleaning Day events. Recycling and ecological living are the prevailing trends in Kallio, as seen in the large number of vintage boutiques, eco shops and vegetarian restaurants. The ethnic shops along Hämeentie

sell exotic food that you won’t find anywhere else in Helsinki. Inside the Hakaniemi Market Hall you can try more traditional Finnish local food, while upstairs you will find a café, gift shops and design boutiques. The stalls outside in Hakaniemi Market sell fresh fruit, vegetables and flowers, and a Farmers Market is held once a month. Just a few minutes by metro or fifteen minutes by foot from Kallio is the developing district of Kalasatama, where you will find the former wholesale market since rechristened the Culinary and Urban Culture Centre Teurastamo (Abattoir). The entire area is being rejuvenated and its historic redbrick buildings converted to house, for example, a microdistillery, an ice cream factory, a pasta factory, a coffee roastery and numerous restaurants. Events are regularly held in the main yard, from street food markets to flea markets. To the north of the Abattoir is the quiet and quaint neighbourhood of Vallila with its traditional wooden buildings and small alleyways. You can easily while away the hours among the cosy cafés and local pubs that can be found along the streets here.

Kallio is the Soho of Finland – bohemian and a little worn in places, but genuine and full of life!

The restaurant ship ”Flying Dutch” sailed along the canals of Holland as long ago as 1897 but can now be found by the Pitkäsilta bridge in Helsinki.

26. TOKOINRANTA Named after Finnish politician Oskari Tokoi (1873–1963), this park is a pleasant place to relax away from the hustle and bustle of Kallio. The area is popular among local residents year round, and it is the site of the Huvila Festival Tent during the annual Helsinki Festival in August. There is also a playground for children, and you can enjoy snacks and refreshments at Café Piritta. 27. PITKÄSILTA This granite bridge replaced the original wooden bridge in 1912. Pitkäsilta (literally ”Long Bridge”) was long considered the dividing line between the working-class district of Kallio and the middleclass district of Kruununhaka. The headquarters of Finnish trade unions are still located on the north side of the bridge, while those of employers’ organisations are on the south side. The bridge still bears the scars of the Civil War in 1918.

28. KALLIO CATHEDRAL This grey granite cathedral towers majestically over Kallio. Inaugurated in 1912, the cathedral’s National Romantic features were designed by legendary architect Lars Sonck. With its fine acoustics, the cathedral is a popular venue for musical performances, including a very popular annual Christmas concert. 29. KARHUPUISTO Once known among locals as Agricolanpuisto (”Agricola Park”), this pretty park in the heart of Kallio became known as Karhupuisto (”Bear Park”) in 1931 after the unveiling of its red granite sculpture “The Bear on the Anthill” by Jussi Mäntynen.

30. WORKER HOUSING MUSEUM  The Worker Housing Museum provides a glimpse into the history of everyday life in the one-room apartments, so called stove rooms, of Helsinki. ART & NATURE The district of Arabia is a treasure trove for art lovers and fans of Finnish design. Situated just a quarter of an hour by tram or bus from the city centre, this creative part of town has grown up around the Arabia ceramics factory that dates back to 1873. Although factory operations will wind down this year, the Arabia brand is very much alive. The modern Arabia Centre at the factory serves as an outlet for Finnish deisgn. The Iittala Outlet sells also Arabia, Fiskars and Hackman products. Pentik, makers of beautiful wooden design and home products, and textile company Finlayson also have their own outlets. Behind the Arabia Centre is a new residential area that has been developed over the past 15 years and is definitely worth a visit. The architecture is very creative, and the shared gardens feature many interesting artworks.

also houses art galleries. The exhibitions present works by former and current students and teachers. At lunchtime the students pack into the Kipsari restaurant, which serves tasty vegetarian food. The adjacent Dylan restaurant is also very popular for lunches and brunches. To the left of Hämeentie is Annala, a public garden that is almost 200 years old and serves as a popular year-round recreational area. A stone’s throw away at the very end of Hämeentie you will find the rapids at the mouth of the Vantaa River, where Helsinki was originally situated. Beyond the rapids awaits the beautiful Viikki Nature Reserve, which is particularly popular among birdwatchers. From Pornaistenniemi near the pedestrian bridge by the rapids you can follow the duckboards all the way to the island of Lammassaari, where you will feel yourself surrounded by the wonderful nature!

Further up Hämeentie is the Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture, which

HELSINKI FOR KIDS SUMMER Helsinki is a real children’s town. There is plenty to do, and getting around town even with a stroller is super easy – even in the city centre. If your feet get tired you can always jump on a tram and use the opportunity to see all the sights through the window. Children under the age of 7 and adults who are pushing a stroller or pram travel free on Helsinki’s public transport! Fun playgrounds can be found in just about every neighbourhood. In addition to lots of playground equipment and sandboxes, many also have paddling pools in summertime, so remember to pack with a swimsuit if it’s a sunny day. Helsinki also has many popular skateparks that you can use free of charge with your own skateboard.

treats to snack on. In summertime you can catch a ferry from the Market Square to Suomenlinna or Helsinki Zoo, both of which are absolutely ideal for kids – the ferry ride itself is an adventure! If you still have any energy, why not head for Linnanmäki? Admission to the biggest amusement park in Finland is free of charge, and alongside all the roller coasters, carousels and wild rides, 11 of the rides for smaller children are also free of charge. With all the lights, sounds and smells, you’ll love the atmosphere! After such a day you’ll be ready for a good night’s sleep!

After visiting the playgrounds in the morning you can continue onwards to the Market Square, where you can see all the ships and listen to the seagulls and street musicians. If you get hungry you can buy delicious fresh donuts or warm meat pies from the market – or if you prefer healthier food, there is no lack of fresh strawberries, peas and other summer

WINTER When it’s cold or rainy, Helsinki also offers lots to do indoors. A sure hit is the Natural History Museum, where kids have marvelled at the two-headed calf for decades. The museum is currently presenting a fascinating exhibition about Ice Age animals, including extinct mammoths, sabre-toothed tigers and cave lions. Other popular museums among kids include the Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma, HAM Helsinki Art Museum, the Tram Museum and the Theatre Museum. Cafés can be found in or nearby all the museums for taking care of hungry tummies!

After visiting the museums, hop on a tram and head for the Winter Garden – the tropical environment is particularly delightful on a cold winter’s day! You can even walk there through the parks next to the Töölönlahti bay. In addition to all the tropical plants and brilliant flowers, kids will love the barbels splashing in the pools. If they like sea creatures, then don’t forget to visit Sea Life Helsinki next to Linnanmäki, where you can explore the underwater world among the sharks, exotic fish, piranhas and sea horses! Another great attraction for active kids is the underground Helsinki Playground beneath Hakaniemi Market, where they can play all day on the bouncy castles, in the jungle play area and in the ball pool. There is even a separate toddler area with lots of stuffed animals to play with while the older kids enjoy their own fun! You can relive all the highlights of the day over dinner. Most restaurants in Helsinki have special kids’ menus, so you can refuel and prepare for another action-packed day!

”For a capital city Helsinki is quite small. But just as in other big towns, something is always happening here somewhere, either in the centre or a tram ride away. ”Helsinki’s secret is that it’s easy to feel at home here. There is plenty to do each day, but my Helsinki means admiring the streets and buildings. I walk my favourite streets many times, and I find new ones. I take a deep breath by the sea and in the market place, I smile at the small doggies in their woollen coats and at the old ladies in their fine outfits. Helsinki is colourful, beautiful and above all: it is alive.”

OUTSIDE HELSINKI From Helsinki it’s super easy to get to other parts of Finland and neighbouring countries. All local and long-distance trains start and end their journeys at the Central Railway Station, and these days you can even get to the airport by train. Most local and regional buses depart from the platforms on either side of the Central Railway Station, while buses to Espoo and further west depart from the bus terminal beneath the Kamppi Shopping Centre. Long-distance buses to other parts of Finland depart from the long-distance bus terminal at Kamppi. Helsinki’s convenient connections make it easy to plan daytrips to nearby towns and nature areas. Just 30 kilometres from the hustle and bustle of the city centre you will find Nuuksio National Park, where visitors can explore the forests and lakes at any time of the year safely along the marked nature trails. If you plan ahead you can even combine your outing with some paddling or a guided mushroom and berry picking tour. There are numerous campfire places and lean-tos inside the national park where you can enjoy a picnic surrounded by the unspoilt Finnish nature.

At Nuuksio you can also visit the Haltia, the Finnish Nature Centre, where you can learn more and enjoy a great lunch or dinner at the restaurant, which affords magnificent views over the park. Nearby Helsinki you can also experience Finland’s cultural history up close. To the north, by Lake Tuusula in Järvenpää, you will find Ainola, the home museum of legendary Finnish composer Jean Sibelius, and Halosenniemi, the atelier home of artist Pekka Halonen. To the west lies the historic ironworks village of Fiskars, now a trendy centre for craftsmen and artists. And to the east lie the equally idyllic villages of Loviisa and Porvoo. All of these are ideal destinations for daytrips all year round. In summertime you get to Porvoo not only by bus but also aboard the 104-year-old ship m/s J.L. Runeberg. If you have a day or more to spend, you could also enjoy a cruise to Mariehamn, Tallinn, Stockholm or St. Petersburg. You can also get to the latter by train in just three hours. A family outing to any of these fine destinations would complement your stay in Helsinki perfectly!

EXPERIENCE ESPOO Neighbouring Helsinki to the west, Espoo is a great place to find art and culture throughout the year. It also boasts wonderful nature that you can enjoy both on land and at sea. Espoo is a place to experience for the whole family! SUMMER Nuuksio National Park with its breathtaking scenery is the perfect nearby nature destination. Thanks to the Finnish legal concept of everyman’s right, you are free to pick the mushrooms and berries in nature – local food at its best! In Nuuksio you can also camp in the woods in specially designated areas. The Finnish Nature Centre Haltia brings all of Finland’s nature under one roof. It also provides information and organises guided nature tours. After a long hike through the national park in summertime, nothing is more refreshing than taking a dip in one of the forest lakes! Espoo also has a wonderful shoreline that you can explore on foot or by bike along the 40-kilometre ”Rantaraitti” hiking and cycling route that takes in green park areas, perfect swimming beaches and fascinating natural and cultural points of interest. Along the way you can even rent a kayak or stand-up paddleboard, or simply relax at one of the cafés or restaurants by the sea.

From the mainland you can continue your tour by boat through the archipelago. One of the most popular destinations is the island of Iso Vasikkasaari, which has a restaurant where you can enjoy the scenery while tasting delicious summer food. Camping is also permitted on many of the recreational islands, which have guest harbours and are accessible also by ferries operating in summertime from several stops along the coast.

Winter days are perfect for discovering Espoo’s diverse cultural offerings. The WeeGee exhibition centre houses no less than five museums and a gallery. The Espoo Museum of Modern Art EMMA, the Espoo City Museum KAMU and the Helinä Rautavaara Museum present a broad spectrum of international art. While there you can also visit the Finnish Museum of Horology and the Finnish Toy Museum!

A perfect way to end a relaxing summer’s day in Espoo is with a visit to Tarvaspää, the home and studio of Finland’s national artist Akseli Gallen-Kallela. The castlelike museum presents works by Gallen-Kallela and his contemporaries, as well as souvenirs from his travels around the world.

Theatre lovers should check out Espoo City Theatre, the most international theatre in Finland that is also known as the International Theatre of Finland, and the Hevosenkenkä Theatre, which presents popular puppet shows and musicals that are perfect also for younger audiences. Concerts by the internationally renowned Tapiola Sinfonietta can be enjoyed at the Espoo Cultural Centre, which is brilliantly lit up from the outside after sundown.

WINTER The proper way to experience the nature in Espoo in wintertime is by cross-country skiing. You can also try downhill skiing and snowboarding at Serena Ski, for example. If you are really brave, you can even try downhill skating! At the nearby Nuuksio Reindeer Park you can see real reindeer from Lapland. Inside the national park you can also experience an exhilarating husky safari or try hiking in snowshoes!

CHRISTMAS IN HELSINKI The Christmas season in Helsinki begins with the opening of the Christmas Street along Aleksanterinkatu, when the Christmas lights are turned on already at the end of November. Helsinki has many Christmas markets, including the traditional Helsinki Christmas Market in Senate Square and the Women’s Christmas Fair at Wanha Satama. There is also a Christmas Festival at the Cable Factory. www.tuomaanmarkkinat.fi www.naistenjoulumessut.fi www.kaapelinjoulu.fi/en 31.12. NEW YEAR’S EVE IN SENATE SQUARE Senate Square has hosted Helsinki’s official New Year’s Eve celebrations since 1932. Tens of thousands of people gather to celebrate and enjoy a programme consisting of musical performances, traditional speeches, greetings and singing. The festivities culminate in brilliant fireworks, after which the partying continues throughout the night all around town. Visit Helsinki is not responsible for possible changes. From June to August the streets of Helsinki are patrolled by around 20 young Helsinki Helpers dressed in green offering free advice and help to visitors. Ask them about interesting events and sights or for brochures and maps. The helpers are themselves assisted by Helppi, our fun mascot who can be seen up and down Esplanade Park. The Helsinki Helpers also serve customers from the Info Container.
