SAVE TH E DATE

Centenary cruise April 25, 2018, is a very special day. As well as being the 103rd anniversary of the landing at ANZAC Cove in Gallipoli in 1915, this day also marks the 100year anniversary of the historic ANZAC victory at the Second Battle of Villers-Bretonneux in France. APT, experts in river cruising has introduced. a series of luxury cruises and tours that include the option to attend the ANZAC Day Dawn Service at Villers-Bretonneux. Book early.

Disembark at some of the newest ports to open for tourism.

Cruising continues to expand into new regions. Out-of-thebox destinations we suggest: Myanmar for cruising the Irrawaddy River; Laos where ships are tackling the shallow waters; Vietnam where simplified visa processes now make it easier to disembark in port. Malaysia is making plans to introduce modern ports and Cambodia currently features in the itineraries of major ocean lines.

NORTHERN EXPOSURE

Arctic adventures Cruising in the Arctic is the big thing this year; let the magnificent scenery surrounding Greenland take your breath away, spot polar bears in the Arctic’s ‘capital of wildlife’ Spitsbergen, or follow the footsteps of the early Arctic explorers on a voyage across the iconic Northwest Passage. The journeys offer wildlife excursions, cultural visits and onboard lectures about the Arctic’s history and culture.

CRUISE – SOUTH PACIFIC

Long may she reign The near-180-year old shipping line, Cunard, is quick to remind us of the lofty traditions that brought it to where it is today. WORDS RODERICK EIME

1. QM2 Queens room. 2. QM2 makes her debut in Sydney, February 2007.

ESCHEWING VULGAR ACCOUTREMENTS such as skating rinks, climbing walls and cartoon characters, Cunard remains true to its long heritage of ocean-going prowess by retaining such institutions as scrumptious high teas, ballroom dancing and superior dining with many options. When the new flagship, Queen Mary 2 (QM2), was launched in 2004 at more than 150,000 gross tons, she was the largest passenger ship afloat and set out amid great fanfare on the first of her many world tours. We all remember her maiden visit to Sydney in 2007 when just about everything that floated was on the harbour to greet her. Cunard ships in Sydney Harbour recall the war years when the original Queen Elizabeth and Queen Mary (now permanently docked as a museum ship and hotel in Long Beach, California) ferried thousands of our men and women to hostile shores. Today, Australians continue to make up the majority of passengers aboard Cunard vessels while travelling in southern waters. On QM2’s most recent sold-out sojourn, which included maiden calls to both Kangaroo Island and Tasmania, hundreds

of us went aboard to sample the famous vessel’s legendary allure. QM2 offers 14 decks packed with sports, entertainment, lounges, bars, shops, five pools and more than 10 dining options. The liner is also home to the only planetarium at sea, as well as the largest library and ballroom afloat. Almost 75 per cent of her 1360 staterooms offer private balconies. One of the most significant alterations to QM2’s configuration was the overhaul of the King’s Court open-dining bistro. These upgrades were made largely due to passenger

FIVE FACTS

1

Queen Mary 2 is the NEWEST, LARGEST AND FASTEST proper ocean liner in service and the only one still offering regular transatlantic voyages.

2

BUILT AT A COST OF US$800M in 2004, QM2 was ‘remastered’ in 2016 at a cost of AU$150m, which included the addition of 50 new staterooms and a Liverpool lamppost for the canine passengers.

3

For the first time in the company’s history, Cunard will HOMEPORT A SHIP IN AUSTRALIA. The 90,000 tonne Queen Elizabeth will offer cruises from Sydney and Melbourne for two months in 2019.

4

While most cruise ships will travel at around 20 knots at a maximum, QM2 is engineered for speedy transatlantic crossings at speeds up to 30 KNOTS thanks in part to two gas turbine (jet) engines providing extra power when needed.

feedback that demanded greater menu choice as well as easier access to seating and servery areas. Additionally, the Todd English premium restaurant has been replaced with The Verandah Grill, in deference to the original which first appeared on the original Queen Mary 80 years ago. A Cunard ‘royal tour’ to Australia usually coincides with simultaneous visits from QM2’s regal siblings, Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth. The two younger, slightly smaller royals are built to the popular Vista Class category of cruise ship used by parent company Carnival with other lines, Holland America and Costa, meaning QM2 remains unique as a purpose-built ocean liner and the definitive reigning monarch. All of which only goes to prove that Australian cruise passengers are still deeply enamoured by the thrill of sailing aboard what many will argue is the most prestigious shipping line afloat. •••

5

Record numbers of ships and passengers are now sailing Australian waters. More than 40 SHIPS will make 900 PORT CALLS with 23 of those ships offering return cruises to Australian ports.

Island escape In Auckland’s backyard you’ll find a special kind of holiday. WORDS LARISSA DUBECKI

WAIHEKE ISLAND’S VITAL STATISTICS will please any oenophile. This compact island in the Hauraki Gulf, only 19km across at its widest point, boasts 30 wineries and a blossoming food culture. Just add spectacular beaches, rolling green hills and the enveloping feeling of a bohemian haven only a 40-minute ferry ride from Auckland, and you’ve got one hell of a tourist hot spot. The resident population of 8000 swells to 30,000 over summer, and on a perfect blue-skied day you can be excused for thinking they’re all at Man O’War vineyard on the island’s easternmost point, ordering chilled bottles of the estate rosé. You’ll need a car to really explore the island properly (translation: hop from winery to winery), taking in the island’s star producers of Bordeaux-style reds and syrah, such as Obsidian, Stonyridge and Hay Paddock. Poderi Crisci in Awaawaroa Bay is a keen lunchtime proposition thanks to its stunning Mediterranean-style gardens and rugged yet refined Italian menu. Come dinnertime, the place to be is Cable Bay vineyard, not only

for its two restaurants – the Dining Room, or the Verandah for share-friendly fare – but for the spectacular views of Auckland in the distance. And in case you’re wondering about the reason for Waiheke’s viticulture dominance? Its unique micro-climate makes it more temperate than Auckland – in fact, Waiheke receives 100 more hours of sunshine per year than its big city neighbour. What’s that saying about wine being distilled sunshine? •••

LIFE’S A BEACH It’s a bit like choosing a favourite child but our money for the title of Waiheke Island’s best beach is Little Oneroa. Just a short walk down the hill from the Oneroa township and sheltered by rock formations, making it ideal for families, its piéce de résistance is the tiny wood-fired pizza joint Dragonfired, dishing up authentic Italian beauties only metres from the sand.

ALL ABOARD If the arguments over who has to be the designated driver get too much, it’s worth considering outsourcing the task to one of the operators conducting winery tours. Ananda Tours offers a range of group and bespoke experiences taking in wineries, a micro-brewery, and the island’s artisan food producers, while Waiheke Island Wine Tours offer ‘views, vines and wines’ in abundance.

SETTLE IN The island offers a huge range of accommodation from low-end to high; the cliffside Delamore Lodge, with its infinity pool overlooking Owhanake Bay, certainly rates among the latter. For more cosmopolitan delights, try the Oyster Inn, perched above Oneroa’s main drag, where accommodation straight out of the Hamptons dovetails with a restaurant serving New Zealand’s finest seafood just as nature intended – simply, with lemon.

Vancouver’s indigenous heart Despite having an indigenous culture dating back 10,000 years, compared to Australia, Canada’s Aboriginal tourism product is still in its infancy. VANCOUVER IS BETTER KNOWN AS ONE of Canada’s more contemporary cities; recently, it’s begun embracing its ancient culture as well. Start at Skwachàys Lodge, housed in a Victorian-era style building, which was a former single-occupancy hotel for fishermen, loggers and miners in British Columbia. In 2012 it reopened as a healing lodge with basic rooms for indigenous people travelling to Vancouver for health treatments, but it wasn’t until 2014 that it underwent a complete refurbishment. Today, this multi-award winning complex boasts an Urban Aboriginal Fair Trade Gallery at street level, 24 apartments for Aboriginal artists-in-residence, and 18 boutique hotel units for socially responsible travellers. An 18-metre-long red cedar totem featuring a man, raven, bear and three watchmen at the top runs through the heart of the hotel. A highlight of a stay here is undergoing, by appointment, a traditional healing with a medicine man on the lodge’s rooftop sweat lodge. Inside this tepee, the temperature from smoldering coals reaches 50° Celsius. In Vancouver’s iconic Stanley Park, join Talaysay Tours, which offer authentic Aboriginal cultural and eco experiences such as the Talking Trees tour, which explains how indigenous people foraged for food. hen passenger aircraft lacked the range to fly the Pacific non-stop, Australians were very familiar with Hawaii, if only for a stopover in Honolulu. But then LA, San Francisco, even Vancouver became a single hop away and Hawaii was overlooked. Now Hawaii is back in vogue and the stream of Australian visitors is growing rapidly. And what a different destination Hawaii is today. No longer is Waikiki a slightly shabby place to buy tacky T-shirts and postcards in the dingy stalls within the International Marketplace before a predictable lunch at a fast-food chain. Some planning has to go into the daily schedule when at Waikiki. If you are staying at the iconic beachside Moana Surfrider hotel you can always begin the day with yoga on the beach before a poolside breakfast. Then, is it going to be a swim off the beach or an excursion to snorkel at nearby Haunama Bay? The truly enthused may wish to climb Diamond Head. Alternatively, there are the shops of Kalakaua Avenue where you can find everything from high fashion to various flavours of macadamia nuts. It’s just a $US2 bus ride to Ala Moana Shopping Center, which seems to grow every year. Here you’ll find

shopping from Apple, Balenciaga and Crocs to Victoria’s Secret and Zara. Lunch in the heat of the day is likely to be light. Poke (pronounced ‘Poke-eh’) is the local raw fish salad; with the most popular variations being tuna or octopus. Many locals recommend the quite basic Alicia’s Market between Honolulu and Waikiki for some of the best of this local favourite. Towards the end of the day you’ll probably be resting up in a beachside bar with a Mai Tai (there’s no drinking on Waikiki Beach itself), watching the sun do its daily pyrotechnics. When it comes to dinner you’re spoiled for choice. There’s everything from Nobu

Chef Chai, who is originally from Bangkok, is now executive chef for Hawaiian Airlines and his melding of the best of various international cuisines is a sign of how far food in Hawaii has come. Depending on your enthusiasm, it takes a few days to see and do everything in and around Waikiki and Honolulu. Pearl Harbour and the USS Arizona and Battleship Missouri memorials are popular highlights. All the other islands are only a short flight away. Kauai is the northernmost and a helicopter flight reveals the lush vegetation that won it fame as the set for Jurassic Park. The population of Molokai is almost half native Hawaiian, so it’s an island that remains close to its Polynesian roots. Lanai is a real laidback getaway; on the entire island there isn’t a single set of traffic lights. Maui is the second largest island and the one with the best beaches and great whale watching during the winter season. Finally, there’s the Big Island: Hawaii itself. Not only is this the place where Captain Cook was killed but the Mauna Kea volcano rises to 4205 metres above sea level. There’s occasionally snow on the summit – even here in the tropics. With the growing sophistication of Hawaii combined with its natural attractions it’s easy to see why Australians are rediscovering Oahu and beyond. The greeting here is as warm as anywhere else in the Pacific. ••• ABOUT THE WRITER David McGonigal, one of Australia’s most prolific travel writers, has been visiting Hawaii for decades. “The spirit of aloha is doing very well,” he declares.

OMAN

Living history The perfect place to dip your toe into the unparalleled wonders of the Middle East. WORDS DANIEL SCOTT

1

FRANKINCENSE IS FAR FROM THE only treasure that emanates from Oman, but it has helped define this maritime nation for thousands of years. Recognising the significance of their gift, Omani merchants took to their ships to trade with all the great civilisations of antiquity, from Rome to China. So this Islamic country has long looked outward from its strategically important corner of the Middle East. It has also undergone periods of colonisation by Portugal and the Ottoman Turks and influence from the United Kingdom during the 20th century. Unlike its neighbours Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, Oman has not enjoyed immense oil wealth, but it is a destination for visitors with its unique history and natural beauty. The starting point for most is Muscat, the capital, which, in parts like Mutra, with its lively souks and al fresco restaurants, feels almost Mediterranean. But then you step inside the immaculate Grand Mosque, with its colonnaded passageways reflecting different periods of Islamic influence and its

massive prayer hall, complete with 8-tonne, 15m tall chandelier lit up by 600,000 Swarovski crystals, and realise that this is well and truly the Middle East. Oman’s history is brought to life in Muscat’s National Museum, in Nizwar Fort, which was built in 1650. The Al Baleed World Heritage site in Salalah in the country’s south is another fascinating way to immerse yourself in Oman’s history with the 250-year-old ruins of an ancient city. And its dramatic landscapes, of sand dunes rearing up to 200m in the “Empty Quarter”, of jagged mountains enfolding giant canyons in the north, and the desert bound by a glistening Arabian Sea in the east, will intoxicate you as completely as the delicious aroma of burning frankincense. ••• The writer was a guest of Oman Tourism and Anantara Resorts.

To underline Oman’s emergence as an enticing Middle Eastern tourist destination, the luxury Anantara hotel group has recently opened two properties at opposite ends of the desert nation. The first, Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar (jabal-akhdar.anantara.com), stands 2000m above sea level, at the edge of a canyon in the Hajar mountains. It will be popular year-round for its dramatic vistas, OmaniNorth African design and cooler temperatures. CIT Y GUIDE: SEVILLE

Music for the soul Arriving in Seville on a sun-drenched early autumn day will set you up for your senses to be tickled and your spirit to be enriched. WORDS BEV MALZARD

WELCOME TO ONE OF THE MOST charming cities in Spain. Various seasons spent here will prompt different moods – so let’s discover the city as the last of the soporific sun takes us on a mellow stroll through town. Arriving in Andalucian Seville on a sunny autumn day introduces you to a polished and historic city that is brushed with vibrant colours of tradition and shining with the patina of a wellworn welcome. The sevillanos are out and about, shopping like maniacs and snacking like it’s an Olympic sport. Modern Seville is all bustle and business (until it’s time to stop for lunch) and the view from the streets shows architectural lines that cut and curve and spring up between classic buildings. Romans, Moors and the glory of Spain’s colonial history are etched into the stones here. And the same aroma from times gone by scents the air in Seville with the fragrance of oil, garlic, hot bread and sweet sugary hints. Some things never change. Seville is the capital city of Andalusia. Located in the South of Spain, Seville, or Sevilla in Spanish, is one of the largest Spanish cities with over 700,000 inhabitants. The city occupies the valley of the Guadalquivir river; with 60 navigable kilometres, it was an important harbour during the Spanish conquest of the American continent. Silver and gold from the New World arrived at Seville along the the river and were

distributed throughout the country from here. The city of Seville is famous worldwide for its culture, monuments, traditions and artistic heritage. This is the birthplace of flamenco and the city where the most amazing Easter processions in the world take place. But Seville is also the neuralgic centre of the South of Spain; a city full of life and possibilities. •••

ARCHITECTURE TOUR Seville’s rich history has left the city filled with innumerable monuments like the amazing Seville Cathedral, the third largest in the world, with the Giralda, its bell tower; the wonderful palace of the Reales Alcázares; the magical Barrio of Santa Cruz, with its narrow streets; and the Maestranza bullfighting ring. Here, even just walking down a local street will offer buildings that illustrate the city’s history and beauty.

TRAVEL SMART

SHOPPING TIPS COMPILED BY TIANA TEMPLEMAN

01

Sometimes less is more when it comes to souvenirs. Buy one high-quality item instead of loads of trinkets and knick-knacks you will probably never use.

CATCH THE BEST DEAL OF THE YEAR BEFORE IT LEAVES THE STATION. ROCKY MOUNTAINEER 2018

02

Think twice before you agree to bring back specific things for friends or family. You will likely spend your entire holiday trying to track each item down.

03

Support the local economy by purchasing gifts and mementos that are handmade, particularly when you are travelling in developing countries.

04

Don’t do your holiday shopping at the airport on the way home. Wherever you are in the world, this is one of the most expensive – and uninspiring – places to buy souvenirs.

05

Always declare food or plantrelated items on your return to Australia. More often than not, you will be allowed to keep them or offered the option to have them treated.

Don’t miss out on Rocky Mountaineer’s biggest offer of the year. Sky-high peaks, fine dining, roaming wildlife, stunning sunsets – a journey through the Canadian Rocky Mountains by rail is, quite simply, unforgettable. To make this experience even more memorable, for a limited time when you book a qualifying 2018 Rocky Mountaineer package of eight days or more, you’ll receive $1,000* per couple in added value to use towards enhancing your rail adventure.
